Is there a work of art more thoroughly decadent than a beautifully made greenhouse? I do not mean those low, simple constructions spanning many acres, meant for mass production of vegetables and flowers or tiny tunnels for producing those for one household. I talk about palm houses, about Eden Project in Cornwall, about Climatron in Missouri Botanical Garden, about Royal Greenhouses of Laeken. Cathedrals of steel, aluminum, glass and transparent plastic.

Duke des Esseintes spends a chapter of À rebours admiring his collection of exotic plants, fresh and bizzare when compared to what was common in his time and place. Further, he admires the work of gardeners who shaped those plants, well aware that their bizzare shapes, colours and textures are work of men who were daring enough to shape what was given to them from nature.

Isn't a fair orangerie, a splendid palmhouse an exagerration of this line of thinking? Isn't it what cathedral is to a wayside shrine? Plants placed where nature did not intend them to be, kept in a climate controlled by human artistry, sealed within a palace of transparent panes bound by filigree of metal. That temple to Apollo and Pomona, that palace of man shaped materials housing man shaped fruits and flowers. Trees growing near each other in defiance of geographic borders, species unchanged for million of years growing next to cultivars that would not exist without thousands of years of human gardeners shaping them. A piece of rainforest, desert and mediterranean orchard all next to each other, separated by a layer of glass from the bitter snow outside.

In just six short years Dr. Singer has gone from foot surgeon, to graffiti photographer, to one of the most important botanical photographers of our time.Dr. Singer is the author of Botanica Magnifica, a 356-page book of stunning photographs of rare and exotic flowers and plants.

Botanica Magnifica features 250 stunning photographs representing—in the words of an ARTnews critic—rare or exotic plants and flowers “in large scale and exquisite detail, emerging from the shadows in a manner evocative of Old Master paintings.

”The original edition of Botanica Magnifica, consisting of five lavishly hand-bound volumes, was limited to just ten copies, the first of which was recently donated to the Smithsonian Institution. The extra-large “double-elephant” format of that edition was chosen in homage to the famous double-elephant folio of The Birds of America, and indeed, Botanica Magnifica is one of the few works of natural history ever to rival Audubon’s magnum opus in its scope and artistry. In praise of the double-elephant folio of Botanica Magnifica, the Smithsonian’s Chairman of Botany attested,

Unit#4

Hey there, fellow nature wanderers and art enthusiasts,

Unit 4's journey into the fusion of art and environmental interpretation has me reflecting on a recent stroll through Montreal's Botanical Gardens. The vibrant hues, delicate textures, and tranquil landscapes felt like walking through a living gallery, where every turn presented a new exhibit crafted by nature's own hand.

In the dappled light beneath the trees, I realized that my role in interpreting nature through art isn't about being an expert artist. It involves being a sharp observer and a conduit for the beauty all around us. In my opinion, the gift of beauty lies not only in the vivid hues of a butterfly perched on a bloom or in the tranquil view of a pond surrounded by thick vegetation, but also in the way light and shadow interact and the cycle of life takes place in these peaceful corners of the world.

Art, in its essence, is about evoking emotion and thought. When I snapped these photos, it wasn't just about capturing a pretty scene; it was about preserving a moment of connection with the world around me a fleeting conversation between the earth and its admirers.

As I ventured through the gardens, the lessons from our course echoed with each step. The paintings of the Group of Seven, referenced in our materials, use art to communicate the spirit of Canada's landscapes (Burtch, n.d.). Similarly, each image I took holds a story, not of grandeur, but of simple, unspoken truths that bind us to this planet.

Risk and interpretive planning, themes we've explored, are about balance (Beck & Cable, 2011). It's about presenting nature's art in a way that is both safe and invigorating, allowing others to experience the thrill of discovery without harm. The Lemon Theory from our readings suggests that we must be mindful of the chain of decisions and events that could culminate in an accident (Beck & Cable, 2011). In nature interpretation, it's our job to manage these risks, ensuring that the story of nature's art is told safely and resonates deeply.

In these photographs, I see more than just scenery; I see a canvas where every creature, every plant, every drop of water plays a part in a larger narrative. And who am I to interpret this art? I am a student, a storyteller, and an appreciator of the intricate artistry that nature displays.

Beauty is a gift that everybody may appreciate, perceive, and understand. It serves as a reminder that art exists everywhere, even in Montreal's botanical gardens, and is just waiting for us to tell its story. It is not limited to galleries and museums.

(HC) His village had their own traditional instruments and styles of music. It's a nice perspective when expanding territory and a sweet bonding experience trying to teach each other your respective skilled instruments

He is a busy guy but he always tries to at least stop by to wish you luck. He's great to have around if you might have forgotten anything, as he's quick to fix it/get.

Sometimes he chips in with any stage makeup you may do (lemme tell u, he'd be great at any alternative or gothic subculture makeup)

Also tries to attend a full concert but if he has to go he'll try and be back for the end. Always has a flower for you

He doesn't have a problem with fans at all. He's happy you have people that you inspire and that look up to you.

Of course he is on standby for creeps. He's quick to trip them on their ass and nobody would know what happened. Or a smack on the back of their head

Billie - If you asked her directly, she'd probably say "painting the floors of the fight club red." And while there is an artistry to be found in letting loose in some hyper violent kombat, it's not quiet where she feels the most relaxed, pinned under that ever watchful red glare... No. Where she really lets loose is on the open ocean sat upon a surfboard. No jeering crowds, no expectations from Kano, no fretting from Skarlet and Tomek. Just her and the wait for a perfect wave.

Tomek - He has an interest in detailed technical illustrations, mainly botanical or engineering. For a time, he also wanted to be a writer. During a childhood marred by what seemed like a chronic illness, focusing on the tiniest details of a flower to commit to paper or writing down the ‘fairy tales’ mom and dad used to tell were good distraction while he sat through treatments. Now it’s largely turned towards weapons engineering. Designing guns that can take advantage of his abilities. Now and then, in quite moments, he still finds time to document plants in a little log book.
