#bruno's trauma
Education headcanons:
Although some of these are canon
Giorno: is still in highschool, but stopped showing up for class when he joined passione. He still makes a point to always be learning, but only focuses on subjects he is interested in. He knows lots of information about the biological world, but has no idea what certain historical figures have done, unless they were particularly interesting to him. Also he sucks at spelling words correctly. In elementary school he wrote a research report on different types of bugs and accidentally released a bunch of bugs into the school and that apparently bothered some of the teachers and other students.
Bruno: he has like half of a middle school education, and his grades were never super high because he would spend time helping his dad with work instead of completing his homework. Up until his parents divorce, then his dad wanted him to focus more on school. But that stopped after his dads incident, and he started providing for him and his dad and protecting him. He asked Fugo to teach him some math, and Fugo reluctantly agreed. But Fugo will go out of his way to try to avoid having to tutor the man because Bruno has a rough time understanding simple concepts and it makes Fugo want to resort to violence. But Fugo respects Bruno and doesn’t want to snap at him because he knows he isn’t trying to piss him off, Bruno’s just dumb as fuck sometimes.
Abbacchio: has a highschool education and went to the police academy. He also has a few basic college courses under his belt. He had a “have to learn in order to get the job I want” mentality towards school, opposed to being super interested in it. He failed PE in middle school and was bullied for it so badly that he started working out everyday so that would never happen again. Also I kinda think he has a photographic memory, which his stand reflects well. He went to a Catholic highschool and his parents were upset that he hadn’t met a nice catholic girl by the time he graduated highschool.
Mista: has a highschool education and wasn’t really interested in getting any degrees, kinda just wanted to fuck around in his young adult years. Math made him cry, and not because he didn’t understand it, he was actually good at math. But the number 4 would haunt his papers. Asked a lot of questions during class. were they ever relevant? No. Did he ask them? Yes. “Hey teach, so gravity. Like what if instead of the earth having a gravitational pull some rando named, uh, Seth did. But ONLY Seth, and everyone was constantly being pulled towards Seth and if you jumped you’d land back on Seth. How would we survive as a species if that were the case?”
Narancia: elementary school dropout. Gets distracted super easily. Would rather do anything but school, however he is very sensitive about having not even finished elementary school. He will pep talk himself into wanting to learn math and things, and then he will start again and will remember why he hates school. But it’s worse when he actually goes to school and sees eight year olds that understand things better than him. opposed to Fugo tutoring him and only having to feel stupid in front of the smartest person he has ever met, like everyone else feels stupid around Fugo too so.
Fugo: you know, the gifted child that went to university super early. Smartest one in the group. He was the kid that would use his pencils entirely until they were sharpened into tiny little things you could barely hold. Also he bites his pens and pencils. He thinks the pencils are more flavorful. Oh and erasers, those tasted good too. The other kids never wanted to play with him because of his short temper, but that didn’t matter because his parents told him that only stupid kids use recess time to play. Classrooms were super overstimulating for him, with that stupid LED lighting that made him feel like he needed to blink his eyes a hundred times. And then doing that would make him feel dizzy and irritable. Like the lights were the worst amount of bright and the worst shade of the color white, and if one of the bulbs flickered he would feel like throwing up. His parents thought he had been drinking once after being in a classroom for too long, but no it was the lights.
Trish: she isn’t stupid, but she was definitely the type to get others to do her homework for her. Is in the middle of highschool. she would spend all of study hour planning elaborate schemes to skip class with her and her friends. Wanted to go to college but wasn’t sure how she was going to pay for it, her new plan involves passione money. That or she is going to become famous, if Bruno and co. would actually let her live instead of saying things like “it’s too dangerous with other mafia members knowing your name”.

So... I've got this idea a few months ago...
What if after the argument, instead of dying, the magic turns Madrigals' gifts into curses in order to save itself...
CW: traumas, body modifications
Isabela: The plants are growing inside of her body, replacing her flesh. Causing severe bleeding. And attempts to remove plants only making it worse. She still tries tho and gets a lot of scars from removed vines. Not like it's matter, they will be replaced with plants anyway.
Dolores: The vibration from sounds starts to affect her body. It works like electricity. Quiet sounds are painful. But loud... Loud sound can cause heart failure. She just stays in her room the entire time, isolated, so she won't die.
Luisa: Her body slowly turns into a stone statue, cell by cell. Her mobility is also dissapearing since her joints being a fused pieces of stone. No need to tell that it's extremely painful. The fact that she can see how the difficulty of the simple movements grows only makes her more terrified.
Camilo: He shapeshifts uncontrollably. His curse usually combines the details from different people, making it even worse. For example, he might have Luisa's arms with Antonio's body and legs and Mirabel's head. Everything in its original size. Or somebody's leg instead of head... There's endless possibilities.
Antonio isn't affected. He's five and he only got his gift. It would be too cruel even for the curse. So he just loses his new ability, without any effect. The other Madrigals are keeping their gifts, but control over them is awful.
Alma, Mirabel, Felix and Agústin aren't cursed as well, since they didn't have gifts to begin with. But the whole situation can be viewed as the punishment for Alma.
And I'm not sure about the triplets. I think that Julieta might get back all the injuries she ever healed and Pepa's emotions being affected be the weather. But I don't want it to be too deathly (there's no point in curse if they die instantly) or predictable (that's why Dolores'/Luisa's curses aren't based on hearing/strength) And I have no idea about Bruno. You're welcome to give me ideas about their curses

It took me a while to notice that the Encanto gramma predicates them “deserving” the miracle (survivor’s guilt there) on them using their gifts for everyone who asks for help, all day, no rest, and tries to make sure no one in the town ever feels alone or unprotected, but not only is that making the kids feel exhausted and inauthentic and unseen; it’s also making her unable to deal with reality (the miracle faltering); and it’s also probably the reason Bruno felt like his gift was hurting everyone, bc it made the villagers really uncomfortable. At first the way “we don’t talk about Bruno” presents him made me think he was walking around telling people bad news unasked, but then he says everyone kept asking him, they just didn’t like the answers. So the town feeling unsafe around him made abeula feel like they were failing them.
And! The way Pepa tells her part of the song makes it sound like everything was sunshine at the wedding until he said what he said. But her husband corrects her “there wasn’t a cloud in the sky” to “no clouds ALLOWED in the sky.” And then at the end Bruno said “I could see that you were stressing,” which presumably means she did already have a little cloud when he showed up. But every time Pepa shows a cloud Abuela yells at her. She’s even dressed all in yellow with sun earrings, she’s trying to hard to stay sunny for Abuela. So she revised it in her memory to Bruno causing it. But then at the end when he tells her he wishes she would just feel all her feelings, her husband says “I’ve been saying that” and at the very end she’s dancing in the snow.
And at first I thought Mirabel had no gift but she and Bruno have almost the same gift! He had future sight and she has inner sight—she can see the cracks in the house before they appear, she can see Luisa’s trauma visually as she explains it. And at first she seems more determined than Bruno to follow through on her gift, but by the end she followed the same route as him—she ran off convinced she’d failed them. But bc Abuela had been through it already with Bruno she was able to make a different choice this time and follow Mirabel and let her teach her. I wonder if Abuela had inner sight too, since Mirabel seems poised to inherit the rest of her gift—house and candle guardian. She pretends she doesn’t believe the magic is faltering but then privately admits she knows, so is it bc she can see it too and was in denial? Or she just guessed bc of what happened to Mirabel?
The fact that Bruno saw the future still in doubt means the visions were multi layered anyway. And adjusting to free will as it happened. I love that Bruno’s prophecies are fluid like that. How the meaning shifts in response to what they choose. Dolores takes his prophecy and chooses to go get her man, Isabela takes it and gets new dreams of her own. So it doesn’t hurt them. I love how all of them develop so much more dimension to their gifts when they’re allowed to use it for themselves and not just for service! Selfishness!! It’s so necessary! I think it’s one of the best forms of healing trauma!! Bc our idea of selfishness gets so twisted. i’ve heard some people say they wished they hadn’t gotten their gifts back. They thought it would be more powerful if they didn’t, but I think the point is that the gifts are just who they are, it’s not really about them being magic. The house only amplifies the gift.
We never really get to see Mirabel’s moms inner life, which makes sense because that’s how we are with our parents at that age. But I do wonder if she had any adjusting she needed to do..
Also fascinating how Dolores is the one after Bruno who sees how things are most accurately, and she sees how nobody wants to hear what he sees, so she stays quiet about her perceptions about what she hears and just reports what she’s asked for neutrally, almost mechanically (unless it’s a major emergency, lol). Like Mirabel says Dolores will tell everyone, but she never argued with anyone about Bruno being bad even though she knew it was more complicated than that, she never tells anyone she still hears him sometimes, she reports “he wants five babies” with the barest quirk of her mouth, she never once mentions Isabela’s bf is her dream man even though Bruno told her that would happen years ago. Her verse about Bruno is by far the most perceptive but she almost whispers it. And only tells Mirabel things if she’s asked. It's so traumatic to be the one who sticks out, who can’t hide the gift so it antagonizes everyone. But it’s almost as traumatic to be the one who has to stifle their gift and not to use it nearly to its potential because so they’ve seen what will happen.
It’s SO layered and so dang accurate to how trauma plays out generationally and I’ve rewatched it three times and still keep noticing things and WOW. And Dos Origuitas makes me cry. Bc it’s layered too! It’s not just “you’ll transform through trauma,” it’s “the process of transformation may take you away from the people you went through the trauma with, and that’s ok, you have to let each other go and trust the cocoon and that you’ll find each other again after if you can” and that’s a lot!!!

Usually whenever I see people say “Alma didn’t directly apologize to Bruno”, I go…..yeah you’re right, but I feel like a lot of people are forgetting this moment.
Tumblr media
After Alma realizes her faults, she comes back to the broken casita with Mirabel, and sings towards the whole family, but more importantly, she welcomes Bruno back. She takes his hands, looks him in the eye, and shows him that she NOW knows her mistakes and that every member here is worthy, (including him of course) and that their gifts aren’t the miracle. It’s not a flat out apology towards him specifically, but she herself told the whole family “I’m sorry I held on too tight”. She welcomes Bruno, immediately hugging him, and she shows everyone that her eyes are open and her outlook has changed, and that’s a good thing! So even though she never specifically said “I’m sorry Bruno”, that doesn’t mean she’s being in-denial of what she did and shunning him out, it’s the opposite in fact. Of course, they’re probably not going to heal quickly, they have a lot to talk about, to make up for lost time, and I think the writers are smart enough to know that. When the family rebuilds their house, it isn’t just them saying everything is okay, it’s them admitting that they have made a new foundation, and that in time, they’re all going to heal, expect they know NOW that they’re not alone, and that they can all work together to be better. Just like the directors have said, family can be messy, and it’s going to be messy from time to time. However, that doesn’t mean their isn’t light, isn’t hope for a better way, a better life. While some have wished Mirabel or Bruno would cut off Alma, this movie teaches you not to FORGIVE your abusers like a lot have been saying, but rather teaches you that anyone is capable of changing, anyone is capable of getting better, of BEING better, of healing and growing as people, as a family than they once were. Everyone has their own demons, their own faults and imperfections, but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost, or that their can’t be a reconcile. And even if you don’t agree, or don’t think the film handled a message like this well, hopefully we can all agree that this movie is certainly a good START when talking about these complex themes towards kids and adults. 💚❤️

Continuing a bit from the previous post I made about Bruno, which was more about discussing the storyline in context of my own experience and similar real life situations. But I didn’t really discuss the actual writing of the movie and the general portrayal of such storylines in media, so I felt like sharing some more thoughts - getting a bit more critical here but again, no character bashing, don’t worry.
Storylines about cutting ties with your family are difficult to get right - in a family-oriented media, it can contradict the message and usually has to be toned down.
As I talked about in my first post, the topic is very sensitive and there is still a lot of stigma and shame attached to it - though people are starting to discuss it a lot more and it’s not difficult to find supportive people (at least in online spaces) who might share your experience and show you empathy.
That being said, media still struggles a bit with portraying things like that. It’s especially tricky for movies like Encanto, created by a company known for its “traditional family values” (and you know I don’t mean this in a good way - this has always been an argument against diverse and inclusive storytelling in animated movies, even if Disney is becoming a little bit more inclusive lately). Anyway, back on topic, the themes and message of Encanto are very much that a family can heal and mend their relationships - of course, this is a good message. (A more personal note: I might find it a little too idealistic and delivered in a rushed manner, but it’s a good and positive message after all, and if people can find hope it it, that’s great! I’m not a cynic, just because my own personal situation cannot be resolved positively, doesn’t mean I want all stories on this topic to be devoid of positivity.)
However, showing someone leaving and cutting ties with their family is not completely in tune with this kind of message - after all, this is usually the final step, a pretty extreme measure you take when the situation is really beyond repair. And let’s be honest, it real life, there’s usually no going back once you’ve done something like this.
And I think that might be why the movie kind of beats around the bush when it comes to Bruno’s whole situation and why the framing of it feels a bit inconsistent and not entirely honest at times - because even though he’s supposed to be a likeable and sympathetic character, he did make an extremely controversial decision that goes against the movie’s (and Disney’s) family values.
So the only way to make this kind of plot point work with the intended message was the following: 1) Giving Bruno a “selfless motive“ for leaving rather than doing it for his own well-being; 2) Making it clear he didn’t actually want to leave and that he loves and wants to be with his family.
I’m not saying there is something inherently wrong with this writing. It’s just that it almost feels like (just my opinion anyway, nobody has to agree) this is the only way his decision to leave can be seen as “forgivable” - if he had done it purely for selfish reasons (”selfish reasons” being removing himself from a toxic environment for the sake of his own well-being), then I do wonder if his character would have been portrayed as similarly sympathetic.
How this all leads to unaddressed trauma
But here's my actual issue - the writing not being completely honest about Bruno's decision to leave, the writing being apparently scared of its own implications...results in problematic handling of Bruno's trauma and character resolution.
His actual trauma is barely addressed properly or taken seriously - the negative (to put it mildly) attitude to his gift, his toxic situation in the family and the ten years he spent in isolation - none of which is treated with enough importance, in my opinion. The large focus seems to be on how much he loves his family and the fact he can’t be with them anymore - this seems to be only thing the movie actually wants you to feel sorry about (see how the whole plate scene is portrayed as a tear-jerker vs how everything else about his situation is downplayed and even reduced to a joke). The fact Bruno can’t be with his beloved family is undoubtedly sad, but it’s not the source of his trauma - it’s a result of it and it’s just weird to dismiss the reasons for it. But it's apparently necessary to ignore and downplay the reasons purely because they lead back to the very uncomfortable topic of leaving a toxic family? That's how it seems.
The closest the movie comes to addressing his trauma and acknowledging the real reason he left is in Mirabel’s confrontation with Alma before the house collapsed - Mirabel (bless her!) does call out Alma for driving Bruno out of the family by always seeing the worst in him. But as great as this moment is, the movie doesn’t quite build on it.
Not when Bruno’s actual reunion with his family mostly consists of him being the one apologizing and trying to make amends. And because this seems to be a bit of a controversial topic - I do think it's fine for him to apologize. I do think that Pepa and Julieta deserve the apologies, it's not an issue that he apologized to them. At the same time, I’m also a bit iffy about how one-sided the whole thing is and that this is the sole focus of the reunion - it’s not even about people apologizing to him (verbal apologies are not everything) as much as I’d have preferred the focus to be on everyone learning his side of the story and finally understanding him, while recognizing they might have been unfair to him and hurt him even if they didn’t mean to.
You can make the argument that there was simply no time for this, because it’s not his story after all, but I do think the way those reunions play out more or less comes down to my point - that the movie largely ignores his trauma and focuses just on his love for his family and inability to be with them. So of course, just the fact he’s accepted back into the family should be seen as enough to provide him a satisfactory conclusion and a happy ending, while everything else can be presumably dealt with off screen.
Again, I don’t even necessarily think this is inherently bad writing and I know I shouldn’t expect too much from a Disney movie when it comes to handling a topic like this. The fact this character is generally portrayed in a positive light and not outright condemned by the narrative is already something. But I can’t help but feel that the writers accidentally wrote a subplot that was a bit more than the movie could handle and perhaps not entirely suited for the overall story they were trying to tell - it was always doomed to be handled in an awkward and not entirely satisfactory manner.
Ultimately, I think stories like Encanto are very important for children’s media - which is notorious for putting biological family on a pedestal to a harmful degree. I do think the movie did an okay job somewhat deconstructing this by showing how flawed families can be (without being flat out abusive or malicious) due to generational trauma. And yet, you could still feel the movie is afraid to be perfectly honest about its topics and has to downplay and sugarcoat certain things for the sake of achieving the desired happy ending. Somebody leaving their family is most certainly one of those uncomfortable topics that simply can’t be resolved as easily and neatly as the movie tries to, that’s why it has to bend it into fitting its message instead of dealing with it properly and resolving it in a way that actually strengthens the message.

Love reading your opinions on the characters and movie, it's refreshing to not see that repetitive hate and you make some good points
The discussions and others adding to that is also interesting
aww thank u anon! I just think these characters are so 3 dimensional it’s impossible to boil them down to one thing! isabela is the prissy oldest sister until you realize actually she’s not! luisa is the strong confident one until you realize no she’s not! These characters are so complex I just want to appreciate all of them!
I also love partaking in discussions and find your guys perspective interesting! It’s fun to dissect these characters and this story!

bruabba and fugio are good ships however 80% of the people who post about them are annoying about it. like. same with jotakak and kakyoin stans actually. the way ppl obsess over them and water it down until it's so uwuified and far removed from the source that the characters are just bland and boring. idk where i was going with this
#don't get me wrong i enjoy all 3 ships and i like kakyoin and i like part 5#but the way these things get treated in the fandom is so annoying it's genuinely so annoying#unfortunately a lot of part 5 stans just completely get the characterisation wrong#like bruno isn't an uwu softboy mommy 😭😭😭😭 yes he's a parental figure but he's also like really unhinged and traumatised.#he's a good person but he's fucked up why are we making him into a bland uwu cinnamon roll#same w fugo and giorno.... they both have severe trauma & fugo has anger issues and giorno can be manipulative and cold etc etc#so it's so weird to me when ppl see them as like cutesy softboys DOES THIS MAKE SENSE#also people misunderstand giorno as boring or too similar to jonathan but the whole point is he's a mix of jonathan and dio...#yes he's kind but he will also do almost anything to achieve his goals even if it means people die#he's actually a really interesting character with different layers but people miss it 😭#< obviously it's fine to draw/write cutesy stuff and not focus on character analysis. sometimes u just gotta make it fluffy#but i swear it's like 90% of the content for some of these characters#kakyoin especially holy shit. the like. feminization of kakyoin in the fandom is literally gross at times#when ppl turn him into like a twinky little femboy... come on be so real have you SEEN him#especially when ppl hc him as trans masc and then draw him hyper feminine.... when in canon he's rlly masculine.... guys ☹#<like obviously trans men can be feminine but when ppl make a masculine character super feminine bc of a trans hc. that's. weird

what a day -- one representative of immense joy to bruno, for it is one to acknowledge that despite the hellfire that life has seen fit to put him through, abbacchio is here and he is alive.
it's with a comfortable ease that bruno approaches him, foregoing the 'surprise' of moving from behind him in favour of walking forth from the front, his arms outheld, only to wrap his beloved in a snug embrace.
he's not keen on letting go entirely just yet, only moving his head back just enough to press a kiss to the column of abbacchio's throat (and smirking into that same kiss for a moment) before a trail of smaller ones lead up first to his cheek, then finally ending on a direct, lingering kiss to his lips.
bruno sighs quietly, an excited energy practically radiating from him despite the outward calm, delighted and eager as he is to do whatever he can to make the day a good one.
"buon compleanno, tesoro. i want this day to be as good as it possibly can be for you. so -- you tell me whatever you want, and i'll do everything in my power to make it happen."

Generational Trauma: Encantober 25
Before
Mirabel doesn’t care about her birthday. At least, that’s what she tells herself when the family hosts a big party for Camilo. Half the town shows up and the other half sends gifts.
Camilo gets to request any food he’d like and Mamá makes it all. His birthday is not just a celebration of life, but his gift. He transforms for most of the night, acting out his stories and reveling in the laughter and attention.
Smiling, Mirabel reminds herself she doesn’t care about her birthday. When it comes a few months later, she almost believes it. The family doesn’t forget about her—Papá would never let that happen—but it’s not the same. The whole town isn’t invited, just her family and a few friends she asks.
Mamá offers to cook whatever she wants, but she picks one special dish. No reason to make her stay in the kitchen cooking all day. The town doesn’t send her presents and while the atmosphere is festive, it’s just…not the same. The lack of a special gift, of her failed ceremony, looms like a specter behind every smile.
Abuela’s attention chafes—most days she interacts little with Mirabel. A few comments at breakfast, perhaps, the occasional chore or question. She’s not treated with disdain, but again, the lack of gift forms a divide. Sole attention on her birthday is a duty, not an enjoyment.
When she goes back to her room, there’s a small pile of presents from a few people who stopped by. Mamá must have dropped them off. A card catches her eye and she picks it up. A cute cartoon rat wears a birthday hat on the front and inside it simply says feliz cumpleaños. There’s no signature, but the art is quirky. Mirabel sets it on her desk with a smile.
Who cares about birthdays, anyway?
After
Camilo’s birthday is smaller this year, at his request. He still has a lot of friends, but it’s not open to the whole town. When Mirabel asks him about it, he says he never really wanted everyone to come, but Abuela said it was good to share the celebration. Freed from the bonds of obligation, Camilo’s happiness is less forced. There's an authenticity to him that was missing before.
When Mirabel’s birthday comes, she doesn’t expect anything more than before. She’s surprised to be led to a chair in Casita’s courtyard where an impromptu walkway is constructed. Even more surprising is to find her family putting on a fashion show for her.
It’s a mix of designs on clothes she’s given them over the years and some that had to be put together by Antonio. Who else would pair a warm shade of yellow with a cool shade of pink?
Abuela even joins the rest of the family on the runway, wearing a shawl Mirabel embroidered for her years before.
Her eyes tear at the sight; it was not discarded as she feared.
She claps when the show is over and her smile feels too wide for her face. Tío Bruno pulls her to the side later that evening and passes her a card with a smile. A cartoon rat in a dress looks back, wearing an outfit she saw in the show.
“Tio, did you make this card?”
He nods, hands twisting together.
“Did you make the other cards with rats for my past birthdays?”
“I couldn’t be there,” he says with a shrug, “but I wanted to give you something anyway.”
Impulsively, Mirabel pulls him into a hug. “Thank you, tío. I saved them all over the years.”
Maybe birthdays were something to care about after all.

The Madrigals’ Gifts as Trauma
This has probably been written about (theorized, debunked, confirmed) before, but anyway I was just thinking back to a somewhat recent post and the whole idea that the family’s Gifts are manifestations of Alma’s trauma (grief, fears, etc.) and her need to protect against further pain...
So:
Julieta can heal injuries.
Pepa is “emotional” (she wants to and deserves to express herself freely!) but gets told to feel only certain things at certain times. She is told to suppress “bad”/undesirable emotions. (Alma herself feels this way. Also, trauma/recovery is Like That.)
Bruno can see the future and warn of danger.
Isabela can grow poisonous as well as (presumably) medicinal plants (complementary to her mamá). Her physical resemblance to Alma symbolizes a “second chance” at the life Alma violently lost.
Dolores can hear threats, calls for help, etc.
Luisa can use her strength against danger or to aid escape. Her Gift has offensive and defensive uses.
Camilo can evade danger, or divert attention, etc. His Gift also has offensive and defensive uses.
Antonio can talk to animals, who are sensitive to danger. Specifically with regard to the men on the horses, Antonio could use his power to send any future horses away.
...speaking to the whole generational trauma of it all.
And, based on this idea, Mirabel’s lack of Gift might remind Alma of a “weak” version of herself. Or: Giftless, and therefore the most exposed to danger, vulnerable to loss, unable to provide for and protect others (Alma probably harbors a sense of guilt for not being able to save her husband)—everything the matriarch doesn’t want.
...Maybe I’m just hitting on things that are obvious, since this last part especially sounds closer to canon, from what we know about how Alma perceives Mirabel’s Giftlessness... but it’s still helpful to write it all out.
