New Moon Not Rising

I finally continued my rewatch of Buffy. I don’t know if and how I’m gonna continue my Willow/Buffy scene compilations and thoughts, but I do have thoughts, that are even tangentially related to that: I don’t love New Moon Rising.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid episode. Willow’s coming out scene is sweet, her scenes with both Tara and Oz are good, but the main plot is missing something crucial, and that is importance. At the end of the day, everything returns to the status quo, except now Willow is out to Buffy, and her and Tara are a bit closer. But the main question of the episode, whether Willow will choose Oz or Tara, just resolves itself by Oz leaving, again, for the same reason he did last time. Except last time it had a huge impact, Willow was a mess for three episodes after it; now, there is nothing. Oz is barely, if ever, mentioned not just in the next three episodes, but the next three seasons.

And it didn’t have to be this way. I understand that Oz had to be gone for good, because the actor wanted out. That’s fine. But. What if they shuffled things around a bit, have Willow be a more active part of the episode, while arriving at the same result? It didn’t have to be much. Just let Willow choose Tara. Before Oz changes. Let Willow decide to be with her; let her sit Oz down and tell him. Maybe Oz is heartbroken, and that’s what makes him change, not getting uncharacteristically angry at Tara. And the rest can be the same, they rescue Oz, he leaves, but now Willow chose, and the episode mattered.

(Not to talk about how this version could very easily fix the issues with Willow’s sexuality, just with a few lines of dialogue. I understand that external pressure prevented making her bisexual, or exploring her orientation more, but giving any explanation would have been better, and it wouldn’t have felt like someone just switched a bit in a video game character.)

Something Blue: One of Willow's spells causes her statements to become reality, with consequences both entertaining and life-threatening.

Potential: Buffy takes the Potentials to a demon bar and then to a vampire nest, in order to teach them the art of slaying. When Willow casts a spell to seek out the next Potential, the spell leads them to believe that Dawn may be a future slayer.

The Zeppo: Xander experiences an adventure of his own when he encounters a group of reanimated corpses out to construct a bomb. Meanwhile, Buffy and her friends battle the forces of evil when the Hellmouth reopens.

he can't remember anything before the age of seven and it's one of the things that angers him most in the world. it was when he was seven that he lost his mother, his whole world shattering the second she left. theodore then had only his father, a man who had never once said anything kind toward his son. without a mother to protect him, his father no longer played nice. if theo even dared to glare at him, he would end up regretting it. he learned to hide the bruises by dressing differently and would shut down anyone who questioned anything. this went on for years, theo distancing himself from the reality of his pathetic situation - until one day, he saw a glimpse of hope.

though most of the world didn't have a kill count until after the outbreak, theo can't exactly say the same. he technically didn't do anything... but that's as far as anyone knew. his father had been fixated on a football game, screaming at the television with a lit cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other. by the time the game was over, his father was hammered, beer spilled everywhere, cigarette almost out. a dropped cigarette, an accident, and the man burst into flames. maybe it happened that way, maybe it didn't, but that was the official story - theo's story.

finding out he did in fact have a relative left, his father's brother, was a whirlwind. he'd never met the man before and in turn, his uncle had never known he had a nephew. though certainly rough around the edges, he wasn't cruel by any means and actually became a solid father figure. it was through him that theodore learned everything he knows : about stealing, lying, general thievery, the likes. his known skill was safecracking, something he found immense pride in. his uncle was involved in organized crime so theo dipped in toes in.

knowing the right people and keeping his head down did him a lot of favors. his ego, however, cost him a lot and would often get him in trouble. it was during a bank robbery that he'd gotten greedy and went for a hidden safe in the back office. his team had left him in the haste and without a getaway, he ended up getting caught. aged eighteen at the time, he was tried as an adult ... which landed him with a sentence of twenty years, his record not doing him any favors. he spent four long years in a prison somewhere in missouri until a very odd day came where the guards didn't show up. a lot of people thought it was a test, but they didn't have to tempt theo twice - the second they were left to themselves, theo started brainstorming.

while not quite sure how it happened, he's just sure that it did. whether someone had done it accidentally, purposefully, or potentially even hacked them, a few days later every single cell door opened. he walked out of prison like he'd been gifted a get out of jail free card. it took some time to get rid of his outfit and into what seemed like civilization. he hadn't been out in four years and what he'd come back to seemed... broken. not having left anything behind before he went in, theo moved forward and adapted.

theo bounced around from camp to camp. at first it was because someone recognized him, then because he threatened someone who joked about eating his rations. after that, it was on purpose and he stuffed his pockets full of supplies before sprinting away. the most recent one before uec involved someone who had an... "accident" and ended with theo in handcuffs. he managed to sneak away, still handcuffed, stumbling his way onto uec's doorsteps. definitely not the best first impression, but he understood their caution. hell, it was safer to be. he wasn't sure how to offer his... immoral skills, so he lied about previously being a boxer with self defense training. though he wouldn't advertise as such, he was more than willing to do the more... gruesome tasks if that's what it took to secure his spot.

charismatic when he wants to be, he's willing to do what it takes to survive. his name may or may not be his legal name and may lie more than he tells the truth, but at least he's cute ??

excited to finally start on s5 of btvs :)

I know I didn't leave any big final thoughts on s4 but that's because I didn't really have any big thoughts. I thought the s4 finale was just... fine? I simply wasn't too invested in the whole Initiative plot. Secret government agency playing god and getting burned, that's not exactly original. Also, Adam as a villain didn't really compare to s2 and s3 bads. I think he was really undermined by a lack of personal enmity towards buffy, so I ended up not really caring about him one way or another.

otoh, buffy unlocking the Avatar State to whup Adam's ass was kind of awesome.

if anything, New Moon Rising really stood out from the last batch of episodes. even if Riley revealed himself as bigot extreme and pulled a weapon on a defenseless and caged Oz. even if buffy's reaction to willow and tara was seriously uncomfortable. (seriously wtf, why did they do that to buffy) also while it's so sweet to watch willow with tara, i also feel this endless sadness every time I see them together. I have so much second hand trauma when it comes to them. some of my friends were incredibly invested in them and really took it very hard. :(

Thoughts on New Moon Rising, Buffy 4x19

I just want to briefly say that Where the Wild Things Are was not good, because wow, that was easily the worst episode of the season and this is the season of Beer Bad and Giles Is Turned Into a Demon and Body-Switching Slayers.

New Moon Rising is much better. It was nice to see Oz again. Plus this episode allowed Willow to come out to Buffy, finally admit her feelings for Tara, tell Tara how she feels, and really draw that line in the sand: she’s not pining for Oz anymore. She’s moved on.

Nit-pick: Tara’s encounter with Oz in the hall when she’s wearing Willow’s sweater felt very weird to me. I get that one of Tara’s definable traits is that she’s shy and non-confrontational, but the whole exchange was just strange. Plus Oz goes from 0 to 60. Yeah, yeah, that’s the wolf running hot or whatever. It was still super awkward and not in a “Tara is awkward and this is an awkward conversation” way.

I liked Willow and Oz’s conversation in the van but the dialogue felt a little stilted to me. The hug at the end was sweet. I’m glad Willow got closure there and they can both move on.

Willow and Tara are sweet together. They should have kissed at the end, though. (Like, on camera. I’m sure they did.)

I’m glad Riley has finally learned that demons/vampires aren’t just blanket evil and broken with the Initiative. Spike was fun this episode, though I don’t love him working for Adam. Honestly I don’t love any of the Adam stuff, he is the worst Big Bad so far and I can’t wait until he’s gone.
