Movie Buffs, I need your help!
I'm looking for a movie and it's driving me insane! I have only vague memories of it because it was a borrowed VHS tape, and it's kinda stressing me out that I can't find this! I thought I had a decent lead but I finally watched it yesterday and it wasn't right, but one of the suggestions I got from Reddit wasn't right either?!
Here's what I know;
It had to be from the early 80's up to the mid 90's, since I watched it on tape in 1998.
2. It was definitely live-action with little to no animation.
3. But it's not Labyrinth, Neverending Story, or The Princess Bride.
4. The main scenes I remember are: a woman in a white dress being pursued by men on horseback, the same woman running through a snowy landscape, and the same woman falling in a pond and being rescued. This is very important because I have a distinct vision of her dress flowing and swirling in the water.
5. There were Unicorns? Or maybe just white horses? Involved.
Someone suggested Legend with Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, and Tim Curry, which was incredibly close but not quite right because Princess Lili never fell into a pond and had to be saved? Jack dove in for the ring but Lili never fell in, which is crucial to my memory.
Today I watched Ladyhawke with Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Michelle Phifer, which was incredibly sexy and powerful and had some elements that seemed familiar, but Legend was a lot closer but missed the most important scene in my mind.
Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?!

Cleared Lost Chapel today on my Hard run (after having to backtrack a 2 hours to an earlier save via Aeon timetravel powers to buy Freedom of Movement scrolls because Nulkineth has Mass Hold Monster on Hard+ 🙃) and man does it really feel like an actual Whatever It Takes Crusade.
THIS is narratively the Minovae and companions that fought through the horrifying legions of the Abyss that couldn't be beat for centuries. This is the counting every single cure light wounds wand and scroll and potion, stretching every resource to its absolute limit and letting people lie half-dead on the floor because it's too dangerous to pick them back up. This is swallowing your pride and actually using the child companion who is your precious daughter because Evil Eye will change the entire course of a fight dammit dammit dammit. This is a dragging yourself over the finish line "a victory is a fucking victory" damned war!
It's really juicing up my motivation and inspiration to write because the tone of the game matches the narrative to me so much now. It's also a nightmare of a slog and unfair as hell and I really don't recommend to players that don't have a really good pf1e system mastery! The amount of expletives I've yelled today has been obscene.
Anyway I'll never do Unfair because wtf Hard is already stupid.

what is sha wujing’s purpose in the story?
Oof there is a lot of way to answer that.
Entertainment wise he is meant to be the straight man of the group. Level-headed to balance Wukong's hot temper and Bajie's hot passion. He is meant to reign the other two in when Sanzang isn't there himself or if there needs to be more ribbing on either Wukong or Bajie. He does show to talk more in later arcs at least from what I notice either from encouraging Wukong to give teasing remarks to Bajie as well. He doesn't do pranks like Wukong does but rather just sly dry remarks at his expense.
Allegorical wise he is to represent Emotions and earth/ground (hence the sha in his name) Wukong is the Mind and Bajie is the Body and Bailong is the Will but Wujing is to show what an emotional mistake can direct the rest of your life.
Tumblr media
There isn't a lot that was said when it came to the hows and whys of Wujing's punishment. Whether it was on purpose as a sign of disrespect or a true accident that was made in the heat of the moment. While we don't see any other reasons to be behind his accident I do like the theory that @antidotefortheawkward-art has about the implications of what a cup smashing could mean to imply 摔杯为号 meaning 'breaking a cup as a signal' to hint that an attack is happening usually at a banquet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that would just add another layer of clever writing but if that is not the case I've heard that he smashed the cup in a fit of rage. Against who and to what, unknown, but that Wujing made a mistake at the height of his emotions.
Wujing has been seen as a voice of reason but there are quite a few outbursts that he has had throughout the journey, mostly letting his anger get the best of him but I think that might be his struggle to keep himself in check. Honestly, he seems the most serious when it comes to following the scriptures, seeing the pilgrimage as the true way to redeem himself. Whenever Bajie or even Wukong want to quick when things are getting too hard or even impossible he is the one to shake them back into it. He gives more than one pep talk in the book if I recall.
That is to say, he is very vicious as well when he can be, ruthless with his enemies and his words when he is pushed far enough. He was a cannibal that ate anyone that came to his river, still with a conscious mind of his life in heaven. He was turned into a demon that is without the largest build and the wildest looks but his personality does not fit his description. He doesn't get a lot of attention as Bajie is the more humorous one and Wuking is our main protagonist to save the day but he does provide that level of groundedness I think the team needs.
I also love that he has Nine Scripture Pilgrim's skulls around his neck, which to me highly suggests that Wujing mayhaps has eaten Sanzang's past lives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this is to still highlight his name meaning Sha Wujing and how it means "Sand awakened to Purity" to show how devoted he was to better himself not just for the sake of running away from his punishment but to become a better version of himself.
Tumblr media
I think that honestly, Wujing is the most sincere in his desire to follow Sanzang, being very loyal and trustworthy even if he didn't have a lot to say. But when he did speak I think he always do so with meaning.
In the end, he became an Arhat one who gained insight into the true nature of existence but just short of reaching Buddhahood. It could be that he did not have enough merit as Wukong and Sanzang were the ones taking up most of the toil of the trails or that he was the last to join and simply missing a few more merits to allow him to ascend but I think he still plays an important role in showing that even just wanting to make a change is the hardest part to continue down a path a change.
Tumblr media
Between Wukong's pranking on Bajie and Sanzang trying to reign Wukong's temperament in I think that his purpose was to provide a more neutral character to have a more logical outcome. I see a lot of interpretations of this character as being a more philosopher or inquisitive role. The gentle giant so to speak seeks knowledge for the sake of knowledge and I can see how this can derive from his origins. Or he has been a soft voice of reason, more emotional in his outbursts but well-meaning. Or he has been a huge brute of a man, trying to reign himself in but often speaking his mind first.
No matter how he is portrayed I always love him.
I hope that answers your question!

proooobably need to stop pulling all-nighters to work on the animatic, but! I have estimated the whole thing by faking scenes I haven't done yet with just subtitles and a rough montage of how much time would elapse between each line, and. it's 30 minutes long. less than I expected tbh, but probably more than I assumed letting myself fall in this project's uh. thralls.
I think its structure is imperfect right now, especially in terms of lore exposition, and the beginning might need to be fluffed up somehow? but I'm really happy about characters and tension! I think I managed to properly introduce all 6 characters and set up their respective conflict or Vibes fairly decently, even weaving thematic throughlines together and stuff! even put some fanservice in there that I think is kinda earned, even?? and my Original Characters Do Not Steal are pulling their own weight I think. Maddsen is pathetic, but maybe more sympathetic than he ever was in writing just... due to the sheer fact that we are not stuck in the PoV of someone who despises him? And Serielle is Fucking Weird, which is all I ever wanted <3 (weirdly enough she's almost the one that feels the most zelda-esque in the sort of twin peaks inspiration kind of registry? at least to me. I don't know if I'm just biased haha)
no matter where this project goes, this will at least be a decent attempt at something I think, even if the art is very imperfect and I'm still not sure what the hell to do with voice acting

the way colin morgan is filmed in bbc merlin makes him look small, short and unassuming but in reality wasnt he an absolute unit of a dude?
i imagine that if he had a really big character arc which caused a costume change away from the oversized jackets and faded garments into better amd more courtly well fitted clothes then he would have been quite imposing i think.

Thinking about mbj ordering a little herd of fjord horses so sqh doesn't have to ride on one of the 2 meter tall demonic horse camels of the northern desert . Thinking about mbj riding on a little fjord horse but he's too tall for it so he has to pull a starscourge radahn and use demon magic to make sure the horse doesn't get hurt
