As your not a big fan of fantasy books in general. What drew you into loving asoiaf? What got you hooked?

now that I'm invested in asoiaf I do genuinely like the fantasy elements of the story, but the stuff that really pulled me in was the human drama and political intrigue etc. I love the character work, almost all of the POVs feel fully realised and subvert typical tropes in really interesting ways (imo). I like the inter-generational drama (the reasons I like succession are v similar to the reasons I like the Lannisters), like if I want to understand Jaime and Cersei and Tyrion I can look to Tywin, and if I want to understand Tywin I can look to Tytos, and if I was to understand Tytos I can look to Gerold, like it's a russian doll of intergenerational trauma what more could a girl want.

and on that note I really like the scope! GRRM obviously feels this need to account for all details minor and major, so that even with everything that's already on the page there's room to extrapolate so much more. i mean here I am writing who knows how many words about a fake 20-episode long robert's rebellion tv series lol like this all happened before the series even starts and yet I hardly need to make anything up bc there is so much to draw on just based on all the random little details we've got here and there from characters reflecting on the same events from different angles, and trying to piece together portraits of the people who died based on the recollections of those on the page who remember them..... it is so fun)

and yeah usually I prefer to read about that kind of thing on a smaller scale but the drama that plays out in AGOT is so engaging that upon initiation I didn't find it so much of a chore to keep track of all the various houses and lands etc in order to understand the full implications of each thing that happened - it felt like it was worth the effort. generally it's the 'keeping track' of it all that I find grating about fantasy bc I really want to just get on with the story rather than keep on top of a hundred magic systems and sub-species of pixie.

and obvs asoiaf is low fantasy rather than high fantasy, i.e. there aren't intricate systems to the magic and or complicated genus for each of the creatures, so that made it feel a lot more accessible for me as someone who just isn't very interested in those kinds of details. Dany's magic is made up as she goes along, it's never explained, and that's the same for pretty much all the fantastical elements - it's very show don't tell. and even though when you count it all up there are quite a lot of fantastical features and subplots, taken together with the rest of the story it's more like.... seasonings I wouldn't usually choose but ended up liking just fine in this overall dish lol

and finally asoiaf just really appealed to me from a fannish perspective! I really hate when you're trying to dig deeper with a work and you quickly start to realise that the writer(s) just weren't thinking that hard. it feels like striking concrete with a spade, like it's a one-sided conversation rather than something both the writer and the reader are participating in. I think some fans are perfectly fine with that and good for them - who cares if the author built the work to sustain your analysis if you're just having fun doing it - but for me it's a complete killjoy, I end up v frustrated and like the work isn't worth my time

so here's GRRM who is so fixated on the finer details that he's churned out a history book like 700 pages long and a bunch of short stories and also another history book just to add a bit more texture to the main story. and I don't have to worry about network input or co-writers or actors' intentions or whatever other external conflict or influence cos for better or worse it's all his story. and that just suits me better lol, it's one guy and his shitty computer, and me reading the shit he wrote with it. pure and simple living in the moment no phones in sight

remember when i was like, AUs, not my bag! and then i read a load of AUs and realised i was talking out of my arse? weird. anyway, here is a lovely little hinny AU that i've gone back to a bunch because it's just really beautifully written and deeply charming and actually does something a lot of muggle AUs don't always do, which is play with harry's characterisation ever so deftly to say, hey, harry is harry, but if nothing bad had happened to him and james and lily lived, he'd be a little bit different, wouldn't he? this harry is our harry, but he's just that bit more confident, that bit more capable of digging an active flirt out of his back pocket. and that makes me happy!

The Last Something That Meant Anything by anonymous (Percy POV, Percy/Audrey and Percy/Oliver, short multichapter, 21k, completed)

i have a lot of percy thoughts these days. fanon percy, steeped in weasley bashing, doesn't do very much for me, so i really loved this belter of a percy character study that considers him both within and apart from his family in a way that attends to his trauma and inner life, but also shows the truth: he's not doing well, he does fuck up with a big moral lapse, and then he has work to do - interesting, deep, personal work - to make it right. please check the tags with this one, as it does contain reference to SA, but really do recommend a read if you feel able.

empire builders by she-crow (Prongsfoot, possibly canon-compliant but technically AU I guess, 25k oneshot)

i read this laid out beside a lake and needed at least four more days of lying by a lake to think about it. it's a) one of the most beautiful fics i've ever read b) rip your heart out and staple it heart-wrenching and good and c) some of the best sirius and james characterisations i've read that really serves as a manifesto for playing around with marauders multiships to really different characters in such different lights. the other beauty of it is that it could be canon-compliant? like it could be read as a fabulous doomed tragic love affair between two boys completely infatuated with each other and not sure where to put it. and i think that's kind of gorgeous. so yeah uhh big fan

other than this birthday microfic for mr potter, a bit of tinkering and dawdling with other misc projects that i pick up and put down over and over again, and my usual meta nonsense, i've just been writing Beasts! put four chapters out since last check-in, and am hard at work on chapter eight, which has some of my favourite scenes in the fic so far. we're gearing up for some chapters away from the castle (writing the winter break chapters in august. what am i like!) and some scenes i've been sat on for ages and some others that i'm having so so so much fun writing. i'm a michael corner stan now? who knew?

She lugs the trunk off the bus at the final stop and traipses around the warren of streets in Soho for a while, looking for the address written on the piece of parchment clutched in her hand. Finally, she finds the building, battered door with the doorbell hanging half off, and stands awkwardly in the street, catching her breath, until the machine crackles and a familiar deep voice says: ‘Hello?’ 'Hi, it’s me.’ She clears her throat. ‘It’s Ginny, I mean.’  ‘Oh, hi. Come on up.’  The hallway has an unmistakably damp, squat-like feel about it. Loud laughter spills out of the flat on the first floor, and a group of uni students, squabbling amicably among themselves, parade past her on the second floor staircase as she rings the doorbell and loiters in the corridor, feeling hopelessly out of place. ‘Your hair’s so nice!’ one girl with thick black boots and a face full of piercings says admiringly as she passes by, just as the door to the flat swings open.  ‘Oh, good, you found it. I wasn’t sure you’d be able to.’ ‘Why wouldn’t I be able to?’ Michael rolls his eyes. ‘You know, Ginny, seen as it's Christmas, maybe we could try not to argue before you’ve even set foot in my flat.'

This fic does a really good job of digging into canon trauma that canon just didn't bother to really address. The main characters did end up getting their happy ending in canon but when this was written, it looked very, very much like they weren't going to so this fic became canon for me (I say like I actually watched the show). It created justice and closure for characters that very much looked like they weren't going to get any. (As always, mind the tags. It deals with some very dark topics. There are definitely some triggers in this one. Actual triggers, not just squicks. Anyone that knows Shameless knows how bad Mickey and Mandy's childhood was. That's what we're dealing with.).

10) Standard Deviations - Yuri!!! on Ice

it's the BEST time travel fic i've read! it starts with just viktor and yurio, but throughout the story yuuri, mila, and more all come back and cause enough shenanigans to give yakov a heart attack lmao

it's v lighthearted and makes me laugh more than almost anything else has tbh

OC ramble time for my pinned, in case people see him on @sonic-oc-showdown​ and end up wanting to know more without digging through lots of non context art and shitposts in my Storm tag! (Tho do that if you want anyways)

I’m gonna answer a buncha questions from an ask game now and since it’s kinda long + I might end up rambling anyway, I’m putting the rest under a readmore

✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name?

A long time ago before I was smart enough to know not to name my sonas or give them even a bit of OC backstory or they WILL become their own characters, Storm was meant to be my Sonic-sona. Back then I’d name my sonas Storm, or other words fused with ‘storm’. And since this was Sonic, I just named this one Storm. But it wasn’t long before he wasn’t my sona at all, and developed into his own standalone Sonic OC. But the name stuck.

In universe, his dad named him Storm because his bit of grey fur on blue reminded him of a clear sky with a storm cloud on it

🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)

In the ‘present’ time, Storm is 35. However due to shenanigans involving experiments, and an accident similar to a small contained super genesis wave, he is stuck forever looking like he did when he was 20, or younger considering he’s always had a baby face.

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?

Nope! Storm is acearo, and uninterested in romance! If any poor soul was stuck having a crush on him, he’d be none the wiser as flirting flies right over his head, as do any advances.

He is however a very affectionate person, and likes cuddling and being affectionate with his friends. I’m acearo and uninterested myself, so seeing stories like his where two (or more) people understand each other deeply, and would do anything for each other, and where they get to be affectionate without any of it developing into romance is very important to me

🍕 - What is their favorite food?

Waffles! He has good memories of his dad making them for him, and they have since developed into a comfort food for him

💼 - What do they do for a living?

He doesn’t need to do anything to get by, but he has made a company he kind of semi-runs that he makes very advanced prosthetics with. His patents come with clauses that they can’t go above a certain price, and sometimes he will just give them away to people anyway.

Nobody even knows he’s the owner save for his close circle, and if anyone else does know he’s with the company they think he’s just an engineer and the boss’ personal assistant. He’d prefer it stays that way, since he values his privacy

🎹 - Do they have any hobbies?

Yes! He participates in underground fights. He gets really frustrated sometimes, and he’d rather blow off steam that way. It also started out as a way for him to earn his own money on the side so he wouldn’t feel like he’s relying entirely on his brother.

He also likes tinkering with machines. It’s a good distraction and something he likes doing. He likes coming up with concepts for weaponized robotic arms (these are never for sale), whether they make it past the blueprints and prototypes depends entirely on if they hold his interest or not. Sometimes he makes ones he actually uses.

He plays guitar whenever the mood strikes also.

🎯 -What do they do best?

In his own opinion? Fighting!

Storm is an individual that isn’t very confident- but the one thing that’s an exception to this are his fighting skills! Even when he loses, he’s not hard on himself over it like with other things, and sees it instead as something that was fun and that he can learn from. He’s also an excellent swordsman

🥊 -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do?

Loves:

Fighting/sparring, tinkering with machines, eating homecooked food, cuddling with his closest friends, learning new things about other zones/dimensions and how they’re different from his, playing guitar, listening to friends talk about their interests, listening to loved ones sing, going on motorcycle joyrides with V, driving his truck, causing (non-malicious) chaos- especially in the lives of people he finds annoying

Hates:

Doing mathematical calculations, listening to arrogant people talk, eating spicy stuff, fighting people that were given no choice BUT to fight, looking up at tall people (friends are an exception), being surrounded by water/being on boats, going to the hospital

❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories?

Getting to watch/listen to his dad play the guitar just for him. It’s what made him want to learn it himself

✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

The day he almost lost his brother. This memory only got worse down the line as he ran into an evil alternate of his- their lives/timelines had been the same up until that point. Storm is all too aware of exactly the moment his alternate chose his path, and that he himself had been seconds away from it, with the only thing saving him and everyone else around him being that his brother took in another breath and came back.

🧊 - Is their current design the first one?

It’s pretty close! Artistic growth aside, his quills used to be longer and less messy, his bangs were also less messy, he had no pants, his boots used to be shoes, and he had a triangular bandana. He still had the smaller back quill though, and though you can’t see it here he used to have a huge scar on his chest.

His color scheme has stayed relatively the same, it’s not as pale anymore now that I have a better grasp of colors and coloring digitally

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

The Sonic franchise obv- though he was also made as my first non recolor OC! I’d had plenty of recolor OCs, and I’d had a bit of a pause between making them and Storm. So when I decided to make another OC I decided to finally make one where I wouldn’t be recoloring a Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles base

The current iteration of Storm was inspired by me seeing the GUN truck from Generations in 2011, the one with the saws, and thinking ‘who would drive that truck?’ and then putting my blorbo in the drivers seat

Here’s a character inspiration meme I did some months ago that also puts together some of his inspirations-- not all of these are direct inspirations and are rather characters I found later on that were similar to Storm and that I could point to for people to better understand him like ‘see this thing this character does? That’s what Storm’s like’

(I’ve since watched the original ‘98 Trigun anime, and Vash would DEFINITELY go on there now. I didn’t know anything about him before, but there’s just so many parallels between him and Storm)

🌂 - What genre do they belong in?

I don’t really slot my OCs into genres, since I feel like that can get pretty limiting for me. Like I could say shonen, but even that only fits as far as ‘character getting stronger as the story progresses, also seemingly has willpower and friendship powers’

Maybe whatever Trigun ‘98 has going on?? SHDGSH A mix of tragedy and comedy, a story about a seemingly goofy that’s more than he seems, from his life to his skillset

💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?

Storm is cis but doesn’t care much for any gender roles or how he presents himself, and he’s acearo!

🙌 - How many sibling does your OC have?

He has no biological siblings, but has a few that are either adoptive siblings or adoptive sibling adjacent! Exe (who belongs to rMADA on FA) and is his oldest adoptive family (though Storm no longer remembers the early years before he met Exe again)

V (who belongs to riftclaw on here and is also part of the tournament!)- they both consider each other ‘pack’, but there’s enough sibling energy here that Storm can introduce himself like either Vs brother or weird sibling if it’s easier.

Luka (who also belongs to riftclaw) who he tends to have sibling “arguments” with a lot, even though at the end of the day they’ll cuddle together (while still “arguing”). It lets Luka let out a lot of pent up energy, and Storm finds the whole thing hilarious and to be familiar territory so he’s more than happy to play along

He also has a couple alternates that he’s ran into, or will run into along the course of his story, that he considers his brothers.

He has a whole adoptive family, but these are the people that he’d label ‘siblings’ if he has to put any label on them, though that they’re family is enough for him.

🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

OUGH. Storm’s relationship with his dad was shaping up to be a great one, before it was cut short in a tragic accident during a training session with Exe. Atos was a great dad. He wanted his son to have everything he couldn’t have as a child- normalcy, love, and no expectations that could never be met.

After he died, things went downhill fast with Storm’s mom. Storm’s terrified of her to this day even though she’s no longer alive either.

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?

How long he’s stuck around, and how I can use him as an experiment to try out new art styles because I’m just so used to drawing him.

Story-wise I like that he can zone hop/travel dimensions, because I can fling him at whatever setting feels fitting, along with him meeting new people being no problem

✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC?

TOO MUCH PROBABLY. Even when I don’t do serious art I like doing little doodles of him with stuff that pops into my head.

He’s the character I draw the most, and the character I write about the most

💎 - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?

NOPE not the main version of him. There Is a verse where he’s ended up dead. But his main verse story hasn’t had him die

💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?

LORT for someone that flings himself at danger whenever he sees fit, he also fears a lot.

He’s terrified of deep water. He CAN swim, but would prefer not to. He’ll swim in the shallows if he has to cool off badly, but deep water makes him panic.

He’s afraid of clowns and also puppets He’s afraid of needles

Not quite a phobia, but he hates the sound of loud wind, especially when he knows a blizzard is happening outside.

He’ll panic if he wakes up to the sound of a drill

He hates the smell of whiskey

And again not a phobia, but a trigger- it’s activated if he’s sparring someone and they rest their foot on his back while he’s already down. It has to do with the day he lost his arm

🍩 -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival?

He doesn’t quite have any! If anyone considers him a rival, it’s pretty one sided because he’s oblivious to it

His arch nemesis was the guy that took his arm, but through story progression he became his rival, and now their relationship is more of a friendship that neither will admit to. They’re sparring partners. Storm likes to annoy him

🎓 - How long have you had the OC?

Since 2011! I THINK I made the first iteration of him in either late 2010 or early 2011. But then Sonic Generations came out with THAT TRUCK, and me and my friends started doing a silly GUN Agent chat rp. So I made an au of Storm called ‘Agent Storm’ that drove the be-buzzsaw’d GUN truck. But then as the story progressed, I began to adore that version of the character so he just became the main verse for him

His story has remained fairly same-ish. Even though at the start you can see a definitive sign of that good ol ‘teenager writing angst’ type of story, I’ve left it fairly intact. I’ve only changed parts that were like ‘yeah this is too much’ or where I just couldn’t fit in some characters or storylines anymore. I like having it as a sort of timeline to how my storytelling has developed

🍥 - What age were you when you created the OC?

17!

SOME EXTRA FUN FACTS:

-Storm was the one that added the buzzsaws and jet boosters to the GUN truck. They didn’t let him do much but transport cargo, so he started reading up on engineering and robotics and tinkering in the abundance of spare time he had. He added those thing to the truck out of boredom, and didn’t think he’d ever really use them- cargo transport is rarely ever that exciting.

But then he was in the middle of a drive when he heard over the comms that Sonic the Hedgehog had escaped captivity near his area and. Well. The rest is history

-He’s since left GUN and stolen took the truck. He and his brother Exe have formed their own team through which they feel they can help the world more. Part of their activities include tracking down facilities (that are often GUN supported) that deal in Mobian experimentation, and shutting them down/destroying them (not with the experiments still in them)

-He’s Terrified of Shadow due to events in his universe. He’s trying to be better about it

-The ‘goofy clueless idiot’ behavior is all an act

-He has a fake southern accent as part of his facade. Yeehaw. A reminant of a childhood ‘dream job’ of being a cowboy that wanders around helping people where it’s needed

-Because he can zone hop, he has a few universes where he’s decided to stick around. One of them is a game/IDW verse. He went through the events of Forces there, and his initial plan was to just help out with the war and then leave forever. But then he became friends with that universe’s Sonic whoops.

He lowkey cursed the friendship when he also went through the zombot arc, but he’s never actually regretted it

-He platonically adores Rough and Tumble just from what he’s heard about them and what little he’s seen. He doesn’t take them seriously and thinks they’re so goofy and hilarious. He’s like “LOOK at them, they’re brothers! They got each other! They think they’re doin’ crimes!

-He often introduces himself as just a cat since it’s easier

i found a fake art Channel that's an ARG :) its called ''Snowbird.Rogers''. This post will be about me diving in completely with what i found so far about the channel, if you want to explore it on your own, feel free to skip this!

Im pretty sure this channel is an ARG, the first vid has a weird scene at the end and the second one had all sort of recordings.

What are some of your favorite quotes from the main series? And what are some from Dunk & Egg?

A lot of the asoiaf quotes are gonna be A Storm of Swords because it’s the book I read digitally the most, meaning I was actually highlighting as I went along. So lots Storm representation oops. Rule of five per series so I don’t get carried away.

Dunk and Egg (this one is long because I love discussing these novellas):

Something something the wealthy huddle beneath lavish roofs and tents and leave the poor to sleep in the rain and mud, but the wealthy have created for themselves gilded cages while the poor can watch the stars fall and claim the gift of luck that comes with it. Thanks George I eat stuff like this up like I’m a starving man.

Feel like we need to mention a dragon dream if we’re discussing Dunk and Egg. My favourite dragon dream in the D&E series. Everything about it is correct: Dunk will be a Kingsguard, he’ll be famed throughout the land, he’ll live for nothing but to serve his King. Though Daemon gets one big thing wrong and that’s that he is not going to be King. Second hand embarrassment. As Bloodraven put it, “The fool just got the colour wrong.” Literally Daemon’s entire character. Spitting facts but he can’t tell red from black.

Defending myself by saying this isn’t a dragon dream. Uhhh so! King Aegon V was killed in a massive fire that burned down Summerhall on the night Rhaegar was born. Duncan the Tall, the Lord Commander, died trying to save both King Aegon and the other party guests from the fire. In this scene, Dunk dreams that he’s digging a grave and people, dead or alive, are appearing in it and speaking to him. The last to appear is Egg, who is buried in the sand even though Dunk tries to pull him out. Dunk falls into the grave and suffocates in the sand. It’s obviously supposed to represent the smoke at the fire of Summerhall. Literally wtf George?

The context is pissing contests by the way. Ignore the pissing part there’s a metaphor there I promise. Dunk is super interesting to me because his raising of Egg makes Egg the small-folk loving King that later rules Westeros. Dunk is wise in his life experience, yet he knows nothing of the struggle of women in both noble and peasant settings. Rohanne let’s him know just how difficult it is for a woman to claim any power or influence in Westeros, using the metaphor of a pissing contest, that classic male bonding activity (a woman needs to piss twice as hard).

This does a really good job of putting into perspective how notable Aegon’s kingship was. “Kings do not heap honour on the likes of you and me,” yet King Aegon V named Dunk his Lord Commander and solidified Dunk’s place as a legendary knight. By ASOIAF, Dunk is spoken about admirably. Another King might not have ever given a man like Dunk the opportunity, but Aegon did.

Makes me tear up. I feel like it’s obvious why. Also after this she tells Jorah that the people will not hurt her, for she is their mother. He carried sm and he deserves his vacation and to be drowning in beer doing nothing but fishing all days like he dreams to. Shinichiro's death and reveal about Time Leaping messed with his head a bit so that's why he's not as energetic as he was as a teen. When he makes a decision, he knows it and what it can trigger but he still does it cold-headed if he feels he has to. Wish we had more on him so I could dig more without feeling like I'm making things up. Ikemen.

Favorite thing about that character

He knows how to keep secrets but he reveals them when he feels it's necessary. Keeping secret and being trusted is good and all, but the fact he's willing to share the truth after years of silence because he thinks Mikey deserves to be told? To know exactly what's happening to him and why? To know about what his brother's done? It may not change anything to Mikey's state (it likely didn't) – it's too late –but at least he'll know why.

He's the sole reason we got the Original Timeline flashback/arc. And for that reason only—

Where he was coming from was understandable – but that was still unexpected and the fact he said that to Shinichiro out of everyone.. Wakasa mourned Mikey already, and cannot bear to lose Shinichiro. He rather lose his friend's brother than his friend. And it's not like he takes the value of Mikey's life away (he suggests to celebrate his passing after all) but Wakasa is not one to have a confused and unsure mind. He doesn't like wasting time with overthinking. He has clear-cut answers to everything, and he's glad that Mikey died, and it's sincere – he's not a liar – and he was scared he'd completely lose his friend and he really, really thinks that now that Mikey's dead, Shinichiro is freed of every burden (he'd take a while to recover but he will, it's Shinichiro) and then it doesn't happen. He loses his friend anyway.

His introduction scene is one of my favorite too – first we can't see him coming, and then he's so tiny next to Kakucho???

Sanzu and Takeomi. Takeomi, because Wakasa and Benkei are only ever seen interacting with Shinichiro and Takeomi's chapter is 3/4 about Shinichiro but there's this uncomfortable wall canon (unwillingly or not) but between Takeomi and Wakasa&Benkei that I Don't LikeTM (it's really interesting tho! Ofc their relationship is tense, but I just wish to see how it was before Takeomi got corrupted. Or even when he was, but before the end of BD.) They founded BD together!! They saw each other maybe daily for 5 years straight – their teenage years – wdym there's almost nothing about them!!(aside from Wakasa's 'A day in his life', Benkei's 'A day in his life' and Takeomi's 'feared/disliked person'???)

And then Sanzu.. Wakasa and Benkei are taking care of Senju – it'd be nice to know what they think of Haruchiyo. If they used to interact with him (and Senju, and the other kids) when he was younger; what their thought about Takeomi regarding the situation, ...

Okay, you gotta hear me out-

His relationship with Benkei was totally inspired by Yoshitsune no Minamoto and Benkei from Japanese History. Hence, Wakasa comes from a rather wealthy family. He's the youngest of a handful of siblings and was born out of wedlock (he's still loved dw). Most of his physical appearance comes from his mother.

(Also – yes he does like lollipops and has a sweet tooth but the stick he constantly has in his mouth is a dango stick. And I'll die on this hill.)

I am Interested in you Kiyo Sticks Around AU... it's a v neat idea and there's so much to dig into there. The complete destruction of the sense of self... the rest of the class having to deal with there being a very clear guilty-as-sin murderer among them. So much potential.

If I can ask though: what, in this AU, would trigger his (or at least the start of his) disillusionment with his sister? Because I think that would sit very very far in, for the process to even begin. And at the same time it's needed for him to do any meaningful character change.

thank you!! i really appreciate such thoughtful and kind feedback! honestly, i got invested in the concept of the au because while i love kiyo and wish he had a chance at redemption obviously, i also think the way chapter 3 played out was a massive flop that missed out on a lot of interesting possibilities, especially due to the double murder thing. just WHY introduce the concept of getting a freebie murder if you're not going to elaborate on it whatsoever??? similiarly to the first blood perk in chapter 1, it just served no purpose and felt pointless to even be brought up. all it did is make the trial like, ten minutes longer? but with kiyo being behind both murders, it was really just. meh. quite anticlimactic.

i think as far as kiyo's character goes, he's written in a way that makes redemption... quite impossible, very much by design. his entire identity and sense of purpose is tied to the idea of his sister so, so strongly that you cannot separate it without giving him a significant case of ego death... and even then, i think it would take significantly longer for him to find his footing than the spawn of any dr game. not to mention that whatever coping mechanisms he would come up with, would realistically suck at least as much as his coping mechanisms to losing his sister in the first place.

as far as the au goes, i don't have it fully figured out - because again, kiyo's written like an existential nightmare -, but i figure there would only be an opening to even trying to reason with him through significant emotional attachment (in the au's case, to shuichi, but also because i'm a sucker) that chances are, would be bothering kiyo in some level already. he does not make attachments, and when he does, they are in the pursuit of his studies or his mission to look after his sister. he observes, he studies, he doesn't get involved. maybe the closest he gets to people is the superficial connection he makes with his future victims in pursuit of finding out if they are worthy to be killed. he calls the v3 cast his friends, when it is clear they either straight-up disliked him the whole time through or just begrudgingly accepted his presence (not that that isn't the case with the entirety of the cast, but that's a different story entirely).

what i'm saying is, making a genuine friend like shuichi through his FTE's, would bother him i think already, because it is just so alien to him. i think you can perceive that through the kind of relationship dynamic he upholds with shuichi - they are the same age, but he's only comfortable with his closeness in the context of academic roles.

in the rough outline that's in my head for the au so far, there could be an opening through the argument on the caged child ritual not working -> the legitimacy of kiyo's possession being questioned. i think there is certainly leeway there (maybe a class trial with his sister persona as the main character? could be fun), because kiyo is anything but unintelligent. he knows of grief responses and mental illness, and i don't think it would be impossible to get him to see reason - especially if one could find holes in his story.

of course, this point truly depends on how the writer wishes to see kiyo (in this case, how i wish to carry on my au), because the game is just so gimmicky and unbothered when it comes to portraying mental illness. i don't personally think kiyo would have DID - though he certainly feels like he could fit the criteria of some dissociative disorders, from a dissociative disorder haver - as much as dealing with a very deeply ingrained tulpa situation. however, i think the possibility of recognizing his sister persona as his own mind's creation instead of genuine spiritual possession could help him gain a little bit of cognitive distance. that is not to say that his sister persona would cease to exist imo, even if he no longer wanted it to - which could lead to another interesting change in dynamic and a possible reason for his distance from the persona that was solely created to be a vessel for his irl sister's wishes.

i think even if you build down from kiyo's not being possessed by his actual sister but coping with the worst possible grief response you still would have to take a Lot of time to get to kiyo's actual irl sister may have been bad to him. i think even if kiyo got to accepting the fact he was abused by his sister, he still wouldn't try to find her accountable, because of their unique circumstances, her illness and isolation. i think there is anger there, but pushed so deep under the surface that it would probably take years of therapy to unpack. i imagine this is the kind of emotion that fueled near 100 murders of girls his dead sisters' age. however, facing that is definitely not something that would happen in the time spawn of the killing game (implying kiyo would survive to the end), and i think he would still take the mere implication extremely bad. like you said, ultimate mental gymnast for sure.

Maybe I just don't like Zack Snyder movies?

So I'm pretty far into Rebel Moon, and, at the moment, it has failed to really wow me with anything it has to offer.

Is it just me? Am I the problem here?

It's not like I wasn't giving this movie a chance–I was very excited to see a film he had complete and total creative control over... that wasn't Army of the Dead.

I understand that Zack Snyder movies have a lot of themes and metatextual messages. I know this mainly because he very openly talks about it, like a comedian explaining a joke when the audience remains silent after the punchline. And if that fails, he has a veritable army of people–most of whom I'm fairly certain are not astroturf accounts–who will sing from the highest rooftops that yes, indeed, this thing means a thing.

How clever.

This is an issue that I've been noticing with every single one of his movies post 300; they're all saying something meaningful, but in a way that makes it totally meaningless.

300 was a lot like that (to the point that people as still debating whether it can be interpreted as propaganda or not), but it had this raw, over-the-top machismo that gave it a crucial campy edge that made it seem like it was more self-aware than it probably was intended to be.

Pretty much every movie after that–this one included–is trying so hard to be multi-layered that it handicaps itself, turning everything into thematic white noise.

To it's credit, this film does have a surface-level story–The Seven Samurai with the cast of Star Wars–but it's completely smothered under the weight of the subtext. Can this even be called subtext? Having a long horizontal spaceship come out of wormhole in the shape of a vagina doesn't exactly scream "subtle" to me. Maybe we should make up a new term for this–what's the opposite of subtext that isn't just text? Astrotext? Supertext?

I know that Netflix has dreams of this becoming a lucrative franchise, and to that I say three things: "Good. Fucking. Luck."

It's not awful, it's just... not very interesting. There are these flash-in-the-pan moments that work and seriously threaten keep my attention, but they don't gel together into anything that keeps the crucial flow going.

And every character expressing themselves in these awkward, lengthy exposition-dumps also doesn't help. Maybe it's trying to keep within the style of Akira Kurosawa–I wouldn't know, I've never seen The Seven Samurai, and I most likely never will.

Rebel Moon, like most of Snyder's filmography–is either going to really fucking speak to you, or completely leave you cold; it'll all depend on whether you personally relate to the characters or world he's building like an over-excited dungeon master who spent 4 whole days hyper-focusing on this project and just wants one person to say they liked it to make it seem like all the effort was worth it.

"Bitch, we're here to fucking role-play! Not be your fantasy sounding-board!"

The movie didn't start out well for me either. We get a lengthy backstory narrated by Sir Anthony Hopkins (who seems to be willing to be in any movie, these days), and then it shifts to a woman plowing a field with an alien horse before having to dig a large rock out of the ground. And that was precisely the moment where the film lost me: I just couldn't believe that this girl would need to dig that rock out of clearly loose and freshly turned earth.

This is an an edited version, so maybe the director's cut is better. And on that subject I have to ask "did we learn nothing from Batman v Superman or Justice League?" You either let Zack Snyder make the movie exactly how he wants to make it or you get a shit movie. I mean you'd probably still get a shit movie, but at least it would have integrity.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad if the film didn't have this subtle off-putting feeling of indulgence that permeates every single fucking frame. I understand you're making the movie you want to make, Mr. Snyder, but if this movie were to be even 1% more self-gratifying there would've been a 40-foot statue of your dick that pisses fire while Rock Me Like A Hurricane plays in the background and F-16s do barrel-rolls overhead.

Maybe 300 was just the one good movie he had in him? It happens. One day you're directing The Sixth Sense, next you're directing The Lady In Water.

According to a recent post in his safespace blog he's sworn off making movies for the "main stream," which is for the best, I suppose. The mainstream has not been particularly kind to him.

I'm certainly not wishing he'd stop making movies–you make all the weird films you possibly got in you, you mad bastard, but I think you're done surprising me.

And, in case you're wondering, no, I probably wouldn't say all of this to his face.

V - which character do you relate the most?

Out of clamp characters? Damn this one is hard bc all of them are far too emotional and dramatic for me to relate to any of them; but on other hand even someone as stoic as Doumeki isn't relatable to me bc of blank affect (?). Also how fast characters connect and open one to one another is mindboggling to me. Biggest plot twist to me in MKR was how Hikari fell for Eagle instantly?? Like girl how??? I'll never understand...

So I guess those are moments when worst man alive start being relatable.... yea, him.

Because, how do I say it? I do care about people but they hardly ever do interest me? I have two deeper platonic bonds from years before but beside that I mostly form very shallow bonds with people; emotional connection is something that's ??? to me because I simply cannot open up to people. I guess deep down I do see relationships as prisons and need for emotional connection as flaw (always need for self sufficiency). I genuinely can't recall if I ever missed someone. And there are buncha emotion related things I can only understand on cognitive level, like romantic attraction or falling in love. There were few times when some people tried to know me better really fast and my inner self defense mechanisms kicked in and I got so uncomfortable I avoided them like plague. Displays of intense emotions from others do tend to make me uncomfortable so I gradually start distancing myself from that situation/person.

During my childhood I've always been described as cold and emotionless, even got called a buncha names (like monster or child with defect) by own relatives to the boot - but I did have emotions (otherwise their words wouldn't have affected me), just self taught myself to neither express them nor be aware of their presence. Yea, it's completely possible to feel something and be completely unaware of it. I remember one time (I was 16ish I think) i was out with friend and ran into relative; chitchated a min or two and later on friends was 'wow you rly hate that person' based on what she saw. Which was a puzzlement to me, bc I didn't hate that relative, at least not that I knew at that time.

Basically only way I could deal with emotions was to "think" them, not "feel" them; intellectualization my beloved. However during social interactions I was constantly on a survey, collecting data how "I'm supposed" to act in order to be "normal" - and that's where more problems kicked in, I had no clue of what I "felt" was genuine emotion or just transaction. Long story short, my emotional regulation and self identification were at 0. I ended up in therapy and it honestly helped me to great degree, especially with understanding my own emotions and identifying them, but I'm still emotionally detached from my own self and people around me. Therapists told me it's intense form of maladjusted self protection :<

There are times when I do wonder how it'll be like to have close emotional bond with someone, but I'm very bad at handling them so cons far outweigh the pros pretty fast

Hi again! There's so many here, and the more I write the more I remember so I'm just calling it quits with what i've got haha

when Jimmy chews Mike out, tells him he's a drunk lame dad. Michael says "i think that's the nicest thing anyones ever said to me" and Jim's response is "so... will you buy me a car?" It cracks me up every time. 

@mclavellan mentioned the Trevor & Lamar conversation in Pack Man and I agree! You're so right, it's fantastic. Lamar isn't even a little afraid of Trevor. Kindred spirits, man. He has a weird way of calming him down by talking to him straight that I don't think any other character can do. Michael comes close, but something about Lamar, dude. That entire mission is dialogue gold. From the confirmation of bisexuality and cannibalism, to the constant clash of wholehearted understanding, and belittling comments from Lamar. So so good.

The Short Trip and Contract DLCs. I feel like Rockstar kind of dropped the ball when it came to Franklin's story in V. It felt like they wrote and fleshed out Michael's story, needed a character to push that story along, and created Franklin for that purpose. So I'm really glad they've given us two DLCs focusing on him. And even more glad they've got Lamar in there. Their stoned conversations and the speech Lamar gives Franklin about always being there for him and holding his hair back when he used to throw up at his Auntie's? Damn good 

Patricia and Trevor holding hands and or staring into each other eyes when you're playing as Michael  

I love the therapy sessions. You've got this messed up guy trying to get better because he thinks it'll fix everything, but not willing to put in the work because deep down he wants that chaos he became addicted to in his youth. Doc Friedlander says some bullshit, but he also has some really good points too. And Michael does not care either way, because at the end of the day he's just going to go home and keep drinking, wallowing in self pity. When he DOES put in the effort, and starts to really dig for why he's a repressed angry fuck, "thats all the time we have for today" closes the window of opportunity and vulnerability. Shutting it a little tighter every time. When your therapy sessions culminate in you telling your wife that if she tries to turn you in to the authorities you'll "bury her like the rest of them" you've had some interesting therapy. I guess it worked kinda, in a horrible sort of way.

Trevor dreaming big, thinking of a future where they can do what they were born to do, only to be cut off by Michael's announcement that he's going to make movies and doesn't need Trevor in that life. The scene changing tracks when Trevor decides "fuck it" because he knows he's really never going to have Michael Townley back, and the benefit of the doubt doesn't exist anymore. So why not ask him the question thats been burning up the inside of his skull. "exactly who was buried in your place?" Michael uncomfortably clasping his hands and looking ready to shit himself at any moment is the cherry on top. How he can keep trying to lie when he has zero credibility is otherworldly. How he lies to Trevors face at his own grave while Trevor is 12 inches away from the truth is bonkers. 

Trevor sort of hoping Michael will kill him. Trying to goad him into taking the shot at Brad's grave. I don't think Trevor would ever kill Michael, no matter what he does to him. I don't think he even went there with his own gun loaded. He was ready for it to be the end of things. For Michael to right the original mistake of Brad walking in the way of the bullet, and to finally take Trevor out. Trevor's not going to pull the trigger, he hopes Michael won't, but he's ready if he does. Until Chengs men show up and in the confusion he throws the gun at Michael, sending me into whiplash that had me laughing for a good minute

The Big One's alternating cutscenes for the obvious approach. Lester, Franklin, and Michael celebrating the fact that they've pulled off the biggest heist in history, while Trevor just stands there. He knows this was it. His last score with Michael. He doesn't return Franklin's hug in cutscene 1, barely participates in their fun little handshake in cutscene2. When Michael approaches him in either cutscene, arms outstretched to hug him, Trevor throws his hands up and backs away telling him "we're good" Then the "Pride before the fall, sugar. you know that" line if the 2nd pilot died. goood stuff.

I haven’t watched rest of Season 1 yet, but the Duel structure seems to be like this:

First group is the introduction duels, from opening duel with Gongenzaka to Sora.

Second group is the LDS duels, which everybody except Sora participate in.

Third group is the 4 pre-Maiami Championship duels.

Fourth group is the 1-on-1 duels in Maiami Championship.

Fifth and final group is the Battle Royale.

*First duels introduce us to the world and characters, and explain the mechanics of Pendulum (and Fusion, in case of Sora).

*Second duels introduce us to the ultimate Summoning methods of the main trio (Fusion for Yuzu, Synchro for Gongenzaka, Xyz for Yuya), and Reiji as the false antagonist of the Season.

*Third duels is technically the meat of the Season 1 of the show resides, episode-wise.

*Fourth duels largely set up the events for the later Seasons.

*Fifth duels are the climax of the Season.

*So, let’s dig a bit deeper here:

**We have Sawatari, and Sora as the main events for the first batch. Sawatari’s first duel sets him up as Yuya’s secondary rival (in terms of strength, though arguably not in terms of relevance), and Sora’s first duel sets up his character arc, going from part of the main cast, to main antagonist of the first season, to back to being part of the main cast at a lower capacity.

**For the second duels, we have set up for Yuya’s character, but not much for else. Hokuto only serves as a set-up for Yuya’s conversion to Xyz Summoning, and Reiji initially serves as the false antagonist of the first half of Season 1, then as the non-recurring rival for Yuya, then as the Morally Ambigious Big Good of the series, then back to being his rival for his de-facto Ceremonial Duel (since the de jure Ceremonial Duel against Yusho is not shown).

**This basically leaves us with the third group. There is something interesting going on with them. Michio, and Gongenzaka are both supposed to be around Yuya’s level, whereas Eita, and Mieru, being younger than Yuya, are supposed to be slightly above his level, but with less experience, and training.

Immediately in this batch, you can see Mieru standing out, not only because she is the only female of the group, but she is the only one with a unique Summoning method (Ritual), as well as a unique Monster Card Ability (Flip monsters). It is also the first one where he has to have a new variation of Odd-Eyes besides the Ishijima duel. In contrast to that, Gongenzaka duel is really more about showcasing his growth, rather than Yuya’s, even if it also features a new Odd-Eyes variant.

I guess the idea was that each of these duelists bring about something different out of Yuya, Michio duel requires him to exploit his weakness, which is what Sora would do, Eita duel requires him to exploit his opponent’s strength, which is what Gongenzaka would do, and Mieru duel very explicitly requires Fusion, which is what Yuzu is trying to learn. But that is somewhat speculative.

*Fourth group duels are a bit strange, since the second Sawatari duel sets him up as a recurring character (a la Manjoume), whereas the Isao duel showcases Yuya becoming Zarcified, and sets up the second Duel in Battle Royale against the Bandit School kids.

*Fifth group also don’t mean much, since the second Bandit School duel is essentially a continuation of Isao Duel, duel against Obelisk Force is essentially one big kerfuffle, and duel against Sora is there because you need the protagonist to Duel against the antagonist of the season (which DOESN’T happen in S2, where the rival takes out the Season’s bad guy, and S3, where the protagonist becomes the main bad guy).

I will probably go over Season 2 duels when I get there, but yeah, Season 1 is the most coherent season of ARC-V, and even there are structural issues.

The show is quite wishy washy about how to handle the rest of the cast (which shuffles each season, much like in GX), but it does technically do a better job than previous series, and VRAINS, which is a pretty high accomplishment for a Shonen Jump shonen series, but pretty low for any other shonen show (SEVENS and GO RUSH!! remain uncomparable for me since I didn’t watch those, and GO RUSH!! is not completed yet, but on paper, they both obviously do a better job than ARC-V, SEVENS has two main female characters, and GO RUSH!!’s main female character is tritagonist of the show).

Yuya’s duels, as seen on the wiki page, dimish rapidly until the epilogue as the series goes on, and more characters are introduced, which is quite against the general trend of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but it feels it is executed here pretty poorly, since while the end point of the show is very clearly constructed at the beginning (Yuya becomes Zarc), the road to get there is not well thought, so the respective screentime for each character is quite confusing, and there are tons of dropped plotlines, and story pacing stuff to get to the end point.

In contrast, I found DM’s canonical plotlines had a very simple progression, with Jonouchi, Yugi, and Kaiba getting roughly just amount of Duels for their respective relevance/power level (which is increased in the animé adaptation since the off-panel Duels are expanded to full-to-almost full length). 5D’s is kinda okay since Yusei’s Dueling time is artifically expanded with the structure of WRGP (final guy of the opposing team must go against Yusei, basically), VRAINS is decent-ish for the core trio, not so good for the rest, and GX tries for its time (at least in the first two seasons, back when they actually had female writers) and fails spectactularly on its face (and ZEXAL doesn’t even bother with it, which is fine. No effort means no expectation.). But as dilfosaur puts it, ARC-V actually spends time, unevenly as it is, to develop its cast, only to immediately hand-wave them away, and say core conflict was always between Zarc-Ray(and Leo to certain extent).

I kind of wish they took more inspiration from Pokémon animé, and Digimon Tamers, not less.

In general Mexican Dream is interesting because he’s able to disrupt / get one over on Dream / comfort Tommy really well. Weirdly well.  Mainly by 2 strategies.  1 by taking Dream’s trolling and going one over and above on him,  also by re-contextualizing his shit to call him on his bullcrap. aka Dream taking stuff as a Mugger.  2.  as an avatar of someone (aka someone MEXICAN) who's been thrust out of his own country, who is alone and who nobody will speak to, or if they do it's not in your language,  who faces harassment, and who people shove handouts at out of PITY (sound familiar yet, Tommy?)  who better than... that for soliarity?

Anyway, here’s my timestamped breakdown of the “Mexican Dream visits Tommy in Exile” VOD

M D pulls Dream into his comedy sketch as the "Straight Man".  More mugging shit. "You're not looking too good" Also, the fucking burrito. funny! 11:45 - Re-contexting again!  Dream and Tommy have this whole tangled thing Dream gets into with everything Dream or anyone else gives Tommy is "out of pity" according to Dream.  But he has to accept it or have nothing.  M D yells at Dream for giving him unsolicited "Handouts" ! xD see also the "pity tents" later. 12:30 - "Are you homeless???" from Tommy. (also yes, Dream, it is a "curse" because he's cursing you out, lolol.) 13:50 - first showing up of the "private parts" joke. 14:00 - re-framing Dream as Tommy's "Dad"/"Padre" kinda like the "mugging" thing, makes Dream's power look "off" and "ridiculous", or off and unbecoming or wrong. 14:42 - "borderline my owner" = "Dad"  (also more handouts) 14:55 - "He's mugging me man."  Dream ushed into clear "mugger" behavior" the mask is clear.  M D also defeats that with dance and music. 15:30 - Minor thing, but noting because drugs show up a lot "I can get you some drugs" (and man, do you need them lol.) 16:10 - "Your dad's not buying you clothes, man, that's fucked up" Making Dream look bad.  If he wants to act like he has legit power and can take stuff away, he has to provide stuff.  he can't have it both ways. 16:35 - "I've been living in a tent my entire fuckin life, give me some good shit!" does that apply to M D or Tommy? solidarity. 15:59 - Girl Dream appearance !!!!!!!!!!  Girl Dream appears !!!!!!!!!  Interesting how M D can summon out of Dream someone who's interested mostly in s*x and friendly to Tommy.  And is strong and saves M D. 19:00 - Private parts again lol. 19:45  - "I smash my bros" lol 21:25 - appearance of "the family" / "the homies" 25:20 - "Why are children watching" thing lol.  (for my own reference) 34:00 - bonding over homies that have screwed you over / that you miss (tubbo and juan mendez) warning annoying and loud sound. 37:05 - more drugz lol 39:45 - reverse engineering where a burrito comes from from a pic, lol LOL 41:10 - M D gets pissed at dig about "walls" 41:50 - c r a f t i n g  t a b l e 46:45 - Tommy is confident.  Dream returns.  The fight between M D and Dream gets physical. M D starts losing lives, taking a bullet for his homies and starting from there. 48:48 - "How does he have so much beef?" idk, Dream, idk why he would possibly have beef with you. :p 53:35 - f for Mexican Dream ( 3 canon lives, f ) ( Mexican music continues to appear ghostly afterwards)

A couple bits from Phantom Liberty and the game as I take my sweet time for replay and thoughts percolate:

I can't confirm, but I'm pretty sure Reed kills Jacob and Taylor if you manage to keep them alive until he gets to the hideout. You text him hoping they've got their reward, he says "they're taken care of" and we all know what that means. Slider tells you how Reed operates outright, and the Cassells unceremoniously (and pointlessly, they know not a damn thing) get zeroed. I think it was on his own initiative with J and T; Myers is not a good person, but she's far more...sympathetic to the value of random human life...when she has nothing to gain by disregarding it. And she has a certain sense of indebtedness and a vague fondness for the common gonk.

Reed, on the other hand, couldn't care less about people who are not his, and the mission comes before even them. He is very like Takemura, and both men are like who Johnny thought he wanted to be and was- less competently- at the end of his life.

I really like Alex as a character. She has done terrible things and she has deep regrets about them, but she's also learned to live with it. How much of this life she chose isn't clear and in a way her situation isn't different than Songbird's, as she was tricked or talked into working for the FIA after pursuing her passion. Her resilience is different than Songbird's, her determination and bitterness have different flavors, but there's a lot the same there. She wants hers after everything she has been through and she will do what she needs to get it. She has Reed figured out and while she is fond of him, I think she knows the limits of where she can trust him. It has not been an easy way to go through life.

I said earlier that Johnny must have been losing his shit when Songbird shut him up, but what's interesting is he's pretty chill about it when he shows back up, considering. Why? As he says he "Went to the same rave she did." He pities her. He knows better than anyone except Songbird herself just how not okay she is. Yet again, justifying delaying me starting PL until later in the game where Johnny goes from "asshole" to "good man with asshole tendencies". Early game Johnny would have sympathy for her but he's so selfish that his temper would have beat it out, but late game Johnny is, as Rogue comments, "a selfless Johnny Silverhand." She's not being trite, that's who he is now. Johnny's is a redemption arc.

V and Johnny have conferences about the PL situation and I love it. He's got the right sense of things and I think V would agree with him and not dig into him, especially after the Farewell Tour. I'm glad there's derogatory options if you were playing this earlier, though.

Man does he murder his basketball metaphor when you go to meet Reed, though. I think it's not understood how goofy Johnny is. V gets it though and is one of the few people in his entire life who is willing to play along ("is this a plug for the word corpo or do you have a point?") because V tells dumb jokes all the time, too. Most of his life, everyone took even being fun seriously and his anger, ego, and drug-induced mental illness (game might as well be a DARE ad, it runs down drug use so hard) strangled that part of him. But so much of that is irrelevant here in this strange second chance and the only person he can interact with is this goofy merc. I think Johnny would be happy to do shenanigans with V forever if he could by the third act.

I've been running Rogue's gigs alongside the PL stuff and they're...intermittently interesting. I feel some were meant to be fleshed out more mechanically and story-wise but weren't. The one where you get Nance's son's stuff back has a nice moment where Johnny says he remembers the recorded gig and that he had strained his vocal cords so bad he couldn't speak for a week. V: "Must have been nice to hear." Johnny: "What, the gig?" V: "You not speaking for a week." He just glares. It's great banter.

The "kid" stuff from him tones down in late game and in PL especially. I think Johnny starts to see V as his equal more.
