Remember that glorious period between late 2019 and early 2020 when Reylo and ZADR were both among the top 10-20 ships on Fandometrics for several weeks? Because I sure do.

You know, I’ve become a big defender of women’s media (Twilight movies, Victorian romance genre, romance novels, etc.) deserving their place in pop culture without ridicule, but it always got on my nerves when Reylo shippers started up the whole “People only hate Reylo because it’s for women, and society hates things that are for women!!!” song and dance when the sequels were coming out.
Like yes, Twilight faced a lot of insanely over the top backlash back in the day compared to, say, the Transformers movies, and an honest assessment of much of this backlash can be boiled down to, “12-year-old girls like this thing, so it’s stupid and problematic.” But the difference is that something like Twilight or the 2005 Pride & Prejudice or One Direction’s music has a specific target audience in mind, and that target audience is teen girls and women. These properties are made specifically for the female audience to consume, which doesn’t necessarily exclude boys or men from liking them, but the male audience isn’t typically who the creators of these properties are actively trying to reach.
Star Wars? It’s not meant for the same demographic. Women enjoy Star Wars and have been fans of it ever since it came out, but we’re not the main target audience for this property. Taking something that’s gender neutral/more male-leaning like Star Wars and all of a sudden trying to make it all about appealing to a specific group of women who enjoy mushy romance stories is going to warrant backlash against the new stories and fans. There’s this sense of, “Now wait a minute, y’all are taking something that’s ours and trying to steal it for yourselves. We’re not happy about that!” This isn’t inherently misogyny, this is just understandable frustration over a franchise seemingly switching gears and trying to abandon its original fanbase entirely to appeal to a completely different one.
To go back to the Twilight example, Stephenie Meyer turned down an original movie deal for the first book, because the studio wanted to turn her story into an action movie with motorcycles instead of a sappy teen romance. That wasn’t the story she wanted to tell, and that wouldn’t appeal to tween and teen girls the way she was aiming for, so she said no. Imagine if someone took Twilight and tried to make it a brutal action movie that’s aimed towards the teen boy market. Sounds stupid and pointless and against what the original creator sought out to do, right?

I don't know how to put this into words exactly but I kind of feel like there's this idea engrained in the Strong Female Character trend that goes along with the whole "she don't need no man" thing where a woman is not allowed to be changed or effected positively by romantic love at all. Like, she should be independent and self-sufficient to the point that romance is just a side bonus and not consequential to her personal growth in any way! (Romance almost as a reward for her independence? For being Strong?) And I think that's completely false and disingenuous. Because sometimes the impetus for change or finding meaning in one's life is love. Sometimes love is the thing that saves a person. It doesn't have to be, by any means, but also doesn't not have to be. It's unrealistic and stupid to ignore the significance of romantic relationships for fear that the woman will somehow be made worse or weaker for loving someone.

two things that have to be understood about yona of the dawn is that it has a thriving enamel pin market, and that the makers of said enamel pins seem to have read a different manga than me

I went from thousands of well written, long chapter, deeply planned and executed fanfiction, new chapters and whole new fics uploaded almost DAILY, when I dabbled in Reylo pre-covid.
Now i stand mid-calf in the blood of old fandoms and dead ships with no more than 10 pages of A03 results.
I was a fool, I miss it so much

my review of hurricane wars is that 450 pages in I had to throw the book across the room to pace my house like a caged animal only to pick it up, read the next paragraph, and go right back to pacing. the rats are feasting. it feels like 2018 and I have no idea what a coronavirus is and I'm up at 2 in the morning reading about two people falling in love over and over again in the dim light of my phone screen. I feel alive

i think the recent uptick in fanfiction published as novels is a blight because it gives way for half-baked characters who look and act like hollow shells of preexisting characters. as well as that, there are incredibly different standards for what makes a novel good and what makes a fanfic good

The funny thing about that Rey news is that North American audiences are so misogynistic that this will flop without rey*o so we will see how this goes

How do you feel about Reylo these days? Do you still read fic? (I know I have a similar taste to you about Reylo fic, which makes finding it hard to begin with). Also, have you rewatched TLJ since TROS? I tried doing it but it hurt too much. Hope you are doing well, still love reading your old posts and your new posts as well.
I haven't read any fic in a while, but I certainly will again. I'll always love the ship, but as you say, it's pretty difficult to find fic that has everything important going for it set in the canon universe. I've read mountains and mountains of reylo AUs that I enjoyed, but when it comes to canon verse, the pickings are slim. I got frustrated and depressed about it, so I haven't been looking lately.
I haven't, not in full. It's going to be a long time.
Thank-you! 💖

Literally like the self-restraint I have not sharing every single time I watch the Power of One Reylo fanvid is frankly incredible and I want a medal and a parade

I’m gonna be a broken record and once again apologize for taking quite a while to update. But hey, thanks for all the kudos and subscriptions on AO3! Really appreciate that! 🥰🙏🏻 I’m adding a touch more drama and conflict in this chapter, so read on!
