#but the filter system is atrocious...
Text
We all know the pain of being in small fandoms where you sometimes quite literally read every single fic available with your favourite character. But no one talks about the struggle of the big fandom with loads of fics but you don't like how a huge part of them portray the character and the relationships. Because you sift through pages upon pages trying to find one of the fic writers that have at least a similar opinion about the characters to yours. And it's impossible to filter! Maybe a bit easier if you're looking for something specific but if you're just looking for anything how do you exclude dodgy characterisation?!

I’m going to vent. Sit tight for an artist’s reflection on the acotar fandom!
I was going to use tumblr to strictly post art (at least on my end) and engage with the wonderful ppl here as well. Except what I’ve been seeing as of late is a lot of abuse (across platforms) and it’s very jarring. As an artist, I understand to make the most of your experience in a toxic fandom is to say nothing and do nothing that bothers those a bit **too** passionate about their opinions. I get it, I’m used to being content fodder from other fandoms. So I am not new to this.
But this fandom is *so* toxic that I immediately understood why artists choose to stay neutral or entirely avoid making art for this fandom at all. I have several art friends interested in the books but won’t touch the fandom with a ten foot pole from what they’ve seen. What I’ve personally witnessed the past few months is genuinely disgusting. The only reason I’m here after being FLAMED on twitter is because 1) I began posting BECAUSE people were so kind and encouraging and I don’t want to leave them and the possibility of befriending others 2) I was fully prepared to be dragged for the smallest offense.
I didn’t want to believe people would be downright atrocious to me for Elain, being starborn, holding the sword that reflects her (as I’ve stated when I paralleled quotes) but that’s what they were: awful. And what I got in turn was: why are you victimizing yourself this is what other artists deal with! Ok?? And!? Why is it appropriate AT ALL. Why is it fine for you to do that? I don’t care what anyone ships, why do you feel entitled to comment nastiness under someone’s art. To directly be in their mentions mocking the concept and the way it looks or how you hate the character. It brings me and others joy.. why are you being ruthless? For a fictional character??
It’s too much. And you know, this is my first fandom experience where the shipping is so extreme. I would’ve loved multi shipping as I’ve done it in other fandoms, I really don’t care for what sort of crack ships people make up (though I have my limitations, I think everyone does. “Notp”.) But you know what I DON’T DO as an adult? Ridicule artists for their work. They are providing content FOR FREE. And if they aren’t, they are gifting you with their expertise and talent. You are scaring people away.
I was afraid of joining and just stayed on the sidelines for months just enjoying arts in peace. I only gave in because I showed some friends some of my sketches and they ADORED it. And pleaded that I post. So I did, and I found many others really wanted me to continue posting. So I do. Were it not for the toxicity, I would’ve drawn all types of ships because I’m genuinely someone that does not care about the ship and if it’s canon or endgame or not, if I like the characters and the vibe- cool. Draw it. That’s the beauty of fanart.
But people are acting diabolically UNHINGED over it. And treating artists like they’re players and they’re revoking sponsorships. Fandom should not be a competition. That is exhaustive and tiring. I shouldn’t have to be fearful of the engagements on my posts. I don’t even have 500 followers yet on ANY of my platforms. And still, I am treated like filth. I need people to reflect on their behavior, recognize if they don’t like something ignore it or block it or what have you and be at peace. Stop giving into negativity and using artists as some pawn- they have feelings TOO! And you really turn them off to a character or a ship or a fandom in general with the way you act.
I have my comments off where I can keep them off because I simply don’t want 1) people arguing in my comments and 2) comments that are generally unhelpful or just shaming me for what I post. But twitter I really can’t help what happens. And tumblr too there’s some limits I can take and a filtering system I can take advantage of but even here people lack etiquette. I don’t understand where people get off acting like mean girls over things people made.
This is the most extreme, unhealthy fandom I have ever been in and I’m really not all shocked when I hear an artist quit and doesn’t want to partake. This is not a competition of who has it worse. Stop bullying artists because they don’t make content that pleases you. Just drop it. I can’t believe I am being called TOXIC for defending myself and my art. And I know who these people are, I know exactly the type of content they themselves post and it’s COMEDY to be telling ME I’m toxic for standing up for myself.
Most artists leave or go silent. That’s what you want, right? Or to antagonize them to the point they really lose patience with you. This is me losing patience: a call to being better. Be the change you seek. It’s funny I have people going at me and in their bio it says “ spread kindness not hate” Pardon??
Seriously, I would’ve liked to explore any theory and a variety of arts despite my preferences but the way people act with what I DO put out, I’m just sour. I don’t even want to expand beyond the two characters I really like because I have a headache already with the “you don’t really care about-“ takes that I’ve seen other artists get when they expand what they draw in this fandom.
It shouldn’t offend you that an artist has a preference and wants to share the things that they found intriguing or makes them happy. And if it does, cry about it in private at minimum. Stop dumping your grief onto the artists. That’s all. Maybe then you will see a resurgence of artists that do content for free (and frequently) or a return of artists who left.

Imperial Headcanons: Thrawn
Thrawn:
-can't draw a stick figure to save his life
-writes lovely poetry if you don't mind an excess of blood, war, death, tactics, and hunting instincts metaphors
-his best work is in his native language, his Sy Bisti stuff is decent, some of his favorite metaphors don't carry over that well into Basic
-hates the idea of eating bugs
-is deathly allergic to capsaicin, the way he finds this out is very unfortunate
-bleeds white, this makes his uniform convenient for him and hell for his medics
-can and will bite, every bite leaves scars
- has a rumor circulating about him that says that his bite is poisonous. It's not true but Thrawn does nothing to correct it
-in the end, all the rumor manages is to confuse Thrawn about the difference between being poisonous and venomous
-mostly carnivorous but adores jorgan fruit
-has a ridiculous sweet tooth even by Chiss standards, could and would eat an entire crate of licorice by himself if you let him
-his favorite licorice is the salty brown kind, this information nearly caused a mutiny on the Chimera
- can't see as well in the dark as a human without his infared sight
-his range of vision is something like 425-1200nm, this means he can't see most shades of purple
- actually likes the taste of bacta
-also adores lum ale (which is an actual canon thing, the ale anyway, and apparently what bacta tastes like)
-likes strategy games, his favorites are Rack and Ruin, Stay the Course, and Alterstar
-thinks dejarik is over rated and not challenging enough
-wears subtle red and very occasionally gold eyeliner
-when he can be convinced to do something elaborate, his skill with eyeliner and eyeshadow art is ridiculous
-loathes the texture of lipstick
-his office has an arcane organization system that appears messy to the outsider. the only thing that looks organized is his art collection
-will walk off being shot, absolute baby about getting anything more serious than a three day cold
-the piece of Chiss tech that he misses the most are the blasters. the Imperial ones are atrocious to everyone but Thrawn has a special hatred for them that's infamous among Imperial command
-least favorite art styles: suprematism and pop art because he's a major art snob
-favorite art styles: specifically Chiss impressionism and Denon's neoclassicism, though he has a fondness for street art of any flavor because of how inventive and interesting it can be
-seems like he would be a sad drunk, is actually very inquisitive and impulsive. this is a problem because his basic is very bad when he's drunk
-is one of the few people Piett knows that can outdrink him without cheating (aka: using the force to filter the alcohol out of your blood, my lord)

In regards to your posts about ao3 and how vile it is in actuality, I wanna say thank you. I've not put much thought into the website I've been using but this has put things into perspective. I no longer want my work (work that I am proud of) on a website like that. Ao3 doesn't align with my values and I'm assuming many other people's who use the site.
Do you have any suggestions on a better site everyone can use?
(Side note: I absolutely adore your work!)
sure thing!
while there are no websites quite like ao3 in terms of filtering, curation, bookmarks, likes/comments etc there are a few alternatives out there!
Wattpad - I know people make fun of this one because it's where all the rpf for bands went back in the day but it is still operating and many people use it so you'll likely just switch viewers from ao3 to wattpad pretty seamlessly
Tumblr - you can always post directly on here! there is a character limit i believe of 4k so it's great for showing previews or even cutting up a small fic into parts 1, 2, 3, etc. a little clunky but it's an option if you only write short stuff! (Twitter threads can even be an option for this though again, a lil restrictive and works better for super short works!)
Google Docs + Linktree - if you have a linktree account you can always just link a view only (make sure people can't edit!) google doc of the fic! having the fics on a linktree still give people the ability to see all of your work in one place, and you can even see on linktree the click statistics for each fic! while it doesn't give the reader the ability to like/comment, you can always encourage those who do like it to leave a message on your tumblr!
Discord (or any groupchat tbh!) - similar to above you can always set up a discord server and post your fics view docs links there! it gives a curated experience and you can see the comments of people directly in the server
AO3 has seemingly made people believe that each and everyone one of their fan creations must be thrown out into the void where you hope everyone sees it and loves it. I think this has really stifled people's abilities to truly be creative in terms of making content of their favourite medias (and even with transitioning to making original work!) because you may subconsciously be adhering the current trends and whatnot of everyone else, even if you don't really like it yourself! I mean look at how common modern/high school aus still are today when I have yet to meet anyone who actually likes them. Look at how many books that have been published lately that painfully follow AO3 tag systems, where they don't even havea blurb anymore and instead just have "friends to lovers meet blah blah blah! read it now!". (Not to mention the quality of the books being published is fucking atrocious)
AO3 has ruined publishing and I am being entirely serious about that.
But back to where you wanna go with your fics now. Don't be afraid to restructure how you interact with your hobbies! It doesn't have to be so exposed and vulnerable to anyone and everyone having their say on it. I used to participate massively in fandom and I'll be honest, it made me miserable. I constantly felt like I couldn't keep up, that my ideas were wrong because another idea was more popular, and I really struggled. So I took about a hundred steps back and only interact with the media I like through my friends who also like it! And it's a lot better! You may not get hundreds and thousands of likes on fics from here on out if that's what you're used to, but I guarantee you'll have more meaningful interactions that you actually hold dear to you far more than any "a guest has left a kudos on your work" notification.
(Also just a pre-emptive thing of anyone who wants to defend AO3 on this post because "it's an integral part of fandom!" or "they need that much money because they run a site with no ads!", or you want to try and tell me that the fics on there are fine because it's fiction regardless of what the fics is (including literal fucking CSAM), just know you are completely unserious and I don't value a single thing you say. So don't even try it. How about you donate to a marginalised person's mutual aid for the first time in your life and you'll calm down.)

why did I do this
As some people here are probably aware, recently I made a ship tier list with about 500 Detective Conan ships. That's a bit of an exaggeration, but I definitely had too many.
Anyway, out of boredom (and I guess temporary loss of sanity), I decided to see how much content I could find for each ship on Pixiv, AO3, and FFnet and calculate the (current) total number of fan works for each one.
It went...exactly as well as you would expect, which is to say not at all. FFnet is a nightmare when it comes to filtering ships, and my Japanese isn't quite up to par, so I have trouble using the tag filters on Pixiv sometimes too.
Needless to say, the data I collected is very much incomplete, but it's the best I could do given the circumstances. Blame my terrible Japanese as well as FFnet's atrocious filtering system. My knowledge of kanji isn't up to par, so I'm not familiar with how ship names are written in Japanese. And because FFnet only allows writers to tag two ships at most, there's always a possibility that ships that weren't included in the tags will appear in the story, especially when it comes to the more popular ships. Unfortunately, there are almost 13,000 fics written for Detective Conan on FFnet, so there's no way in hell I'm going to search through every single one of those.
On that note, when the total number of fan works is written in red, that means I couldn't collect any data from one of the sites, so I can neither confirm nor deny whether there's content for those ships on those sites.

The new hashtag filters are atrocious on Instagram. I can't find anything new anymore.
I mean it was already hard to find Joey's content before because there was like just 20% of him on his hashtag. Now they put some algorithm shit over it, so you can't find real new stuff...
I have to navigate through Anya and Freya's identification tag to hopefully find tudum stuff.
On the same anoying level, they blocked hashtag navigation on twitter for not connected people. I don't have any account so f.ck me I guess.
Please tumblr, don't put shit on your hashtag system too !

Tropes of Covid-worrier Twitter:
Shibboleths
"Covid is airborne!" - that the virus is spread through exhaled aerosols, not airborne moisture droplets or surface-tainting "fomites". A point they were genuinely more right on than authorities early on that still has some application – that only N95-type masks or respirators reliably stop transmission, not fabric or paper surgical masks. However, largely an ingroup signal at this point, they seem to believe that authorities not pointedly declaring it apropos of nothing causes or constitutes failure.
Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes: a DIY air filter made of box fans and furnace filters, because above. They love these things and are always frustrated that schools and public places won't welcome wild-eyed maniacs trying to set up their own homemade science fair projects everywhere.
CO2 testing: they carry around little CO2 monitors and are always tutting about how high the readings they get are, less in their own right than because it's a clear sign of a poorly ventilated space where exhalations are not being cleared. Once again, makes them look like maniacs.
"SARS-CoV-2": they kind of performatively always call Covid this, even using more characters of a tweet. I dunno if the intention was to differentiate the syndrome from the virus, or if putting it in the SARS lineage was supposed to draw on residual associations there, but by now it mostly seems like flaunting yourself as savvy.
Something there but iffy
That danger and damage increases with multiple infections. It is true that Danger(Case1 + Case2) > Danger(Case1), which means that Case2 (and subsequents) has some nonzero risk, but they often act like Danger(Case1) < Danger(Case2), which I don't see as well established at all.
Pretty convinced
The danger of Covid now lies largely not in the initial "acute" respiratory infection, but in the chance of later "long Covid" progression to other organ systems, that may render the sufferer vulnerable to later mortality. Damaged heart muscles lead to later heart attacks; blood vessels to strokes & aneurysm; immune systems to later infection (as seems to be making this winter an atrocious pediatric respiratory infection season, or made Jair Bolsonaro an infection piñata). I myself can attest to later blood pressure swings that cause fainting. That this explains much of the increase in "all-cause mortality" above and beyond that attributed to Covid itself since the beginning of the pandemic.
Not convinced
Immunity from prior infections or immunization does not durably reduce the severity of future ones. This is out of keeping with the experience of other coronaviruses already in regular human circulation and mutating into new variants, which after caught repeatedly throughout life become trivial. My own experience has my current infection (somewhere from my 4th to 6th, producing symptom "echoes" of the "long" portions of 1 and 2) as the worst since 2, but 2 was much less harsh than 1 and 3-current was nothing. I suspect this might be a stronger case against the background of a generally decreasing trend of severity. Also it might be the case that immunity wanes so subsequent cases are easier if they occur before it wears off (and leaves new immunity of its own), in which case attempts to stop any particular case with masking, isolation, or air treatment might make population-level health worse by lengthening average time between infections past acquired immunity duration.
"Schools should have been reworking their ventilation systems for anti-viral effect!" My father was the solicitor for our school district, in which capacity one of the things he worked with was contracting. At one point the district upgraded ventilation systems in maybe a third of their secondary schools at once. From scoping through passing a bond, soliciting and evaluating bids to work completion (when the construction market was slack enough for contractors to hire labor and buy materials cheap) was 8 years. In a small subset of schools, that already had ductwork at all, in a rich school district where the bond passed on the first try. To attempt this for every school building in the US – let alone other public places – would likely exceed the national HVAC construction capacity for decades. The only precedent I can think of, the drive to rework hospital ventilation systems against Legionnaires, affected far fewer buildings and institutions that were then fairly flush with income streams atop the healthcare economy, still required extensive federal subsidy, and was ongoing decades later.

🍓 - What allergies or intolerances do your Muses have? How do they handle them? Is it something potentially dangerous or just inconvenient? How do they avoid triggering these intolerances?
Krigg is relatively allergy-free, as far as food, drink, general plant and animal life are concerned. Which she is honestly pretty relieved about all things considered! She's very curious, always willing to try out strange foods from across the galaxy, or pet strange creatures that folks keep as pets, without worrying about her body's reactions to them. If anything turns out to not mesh well with her, they tend to leave her with an itchy mouth and swollen eyes, but never much more than that. Since those cases are insular, confined to a few distant systems, it's easy for her to just not consume the offending products or get near them once she notes they are not her thing.
Intolerances though, those are much more common. Krigg has large, very light sensitive eyes, and antennae that can pick up a very wide range of sounds. Aversion to bright lights and loud noises is a pretty common thing for her specie to have, and avoiding those can be pretty difficult on worlds with less... Delicate species. Most of the time, Krigg just mitigates them by using her goggles to filter out harsh lights, and sound mufflers to clip onto her antennae and stop vibrations from travelling to her ear canal, when she really cannot afford to avoid sensitive places. You would not find that lady at a night club without these on, and even then, Krigg would be incredibly uncomfortable the whole time.
But even with the muffler clips, some specific frequencies are downright atrocious to Krigg. Her antennae are sensitive structures, and some frequencies have just the right wavelength to painfully rattle the delicate internal matrix. VERY painfully. It's the equivalent of a dog whistle. In those cases, all she can really do is grab her antennae and move away from the sound or get it to stop.
🍍 - What is an event that seemed of minor consequence to them when it occurred, but ended up impacting their life/development in a bigger way?
Once upon a time, on a Horde-ravaged planet, Krigg picked up a small statuette from the ruins of a city. It was a small, mundane item, and she wasn't sure if it was an item that anyone ever invested any live into, or just a souvenir from a vacation abroad. It could have been priceless, it could have been absolutely worthless. But it had survived its city burning, and when Krigg saw it, sitting there almost defiantly in the face of the ruins of its creators, she picked it up and took it home.
At first, it was because she figured it was lucky. Her peers teased her a fair bit about taking what probably was just some plastic hunk of junk just because it was funnily shaped, urging her to throw it away before it started collecting dust. They didn't really believe in it being lucky, either. Krigg, however, didn't throw it away. She kept it on a shelf, refusing to part from it - at first, because she steadfastly believed it was lucky. But, after a while, she began passively absorbing news about the downfall of the planet it had once belonged to. Slowly but surely, the idea that the item, though mundane and worthless, was one of the few things left of a civilization scattered to the stars and condemned to a slow oblivion, made its way through her mind.
Even when the novelty of the ugly thing wore off, Krigg still didn't throw it, despite the occasional comments by her peers. It felt wrong to get rid of something that was a memento to a people swallowed by the void.
"I should keep it. It could have been important to someone..."
"Oh come on! Nobody's going to complain about what you do with it, just throw it!"
"It feels callous just to throw it away. Treat it with a bit of respect!"
"Fat load of good that does to a dead race. They don't give a shit, they're dead, and it does nothing to the living to just look back to them. It's not your job to care about every dead race that falls off the face of the galaxy. You're gonna cry an ocean before you're through mourning a fraction of them, it's not worth it."
"Maybe I am not going to cry for all of them."
"But I sure as hell am not going to forget them."

Dean Winchester hates mornings.
It might have something to do with the four hours of sleep that precede them. Or perhaps the lingering memories of dragging a grumpy, petulant 12-year-old Sam out of bed for school when he was still an equally grumpy, petulant kid himself. Or maybe he just isn't wired to handle the early hours.
Whatever it is, Dean Winchester hates mornings.
And yet, he still wakes up early every day.
Drags his ass out of bed with a grumble and a sigh. Keeps his curses as quiet as possible so he doesn't wake Cas beside him. Scrubs at the sleep making his eyes gritty. Shuffles into a pair of pajama bottoms and his slippers with a disgruntled huff, like having to deal with the early morning chill is one of life's greatest inconveniences.
At the doorway, Dean pauses and looks back. Cas is still blissfully unconscious, his breathing slow and heavy and relaxed. The second Dean got out of bed he snagged all the blankets and cocooned himself in them, but by now his hand is out, searching for Dean so he can wrap his arm around him again. When it fails to find him, it curls around Dean's pillow. Cas buries his nose in it and lets out a tiny coo of contentment.
Dean smiles, his heart so full it aches. For just a second, he considers crawling back into bed with Cas. Succumbing to his hatred of mornings and going back to sleep with Cas nuzzled up against him like Dean is his personal teddy bear.
But he doesn't. He shuts the door behind him as quietly as possible and shambles down the hallway.
Dean's not quite firing on all cylinders without coffee in his system, so he bangs his shoulder on the doorway as he rounds the corner into the kitchen, and he swears a blue streak on his way to the sink. He's still grumbling under his breath as he grabs the lid of Sam's shaker bottle from the side of the sink and washes it with as much malcontent as he can muster. Sam always forgets to wash it when he rinses out his bottle, and Dean always has to clean it the next morning so Sam doesn't get yesterday's nasty protein shake crap mixed in with today's. He sets it beside the clean bottle and makes himself some coffee.
It's not long after the smell of fresh coffee fills the kitchen when Sam walks in, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and wearing running clothes like the health freak he is. "Hey."
Dean grunts in acknowledgement. Words are for after coffee. Sam starts making himself a protein shake without so much as a 'thank you' for cleaning his lid. Hell, he's probably not even aware Dean does it for him.
"Oh, can you do extra spinach in my omelette? Gotta use it up; it's getting kinda wilted," Sam asks on his way out the door, like it's a given Dean will make him an omelette. Because it is a given. Five people in the bunker and someone needs to make breakfast for them all. Might as well be Dean. "And tomatoes?"
"Yeah yeah, have it your way, Burger King," Dean grouses as he pours himself a mug of coffee. He dumps what's left and fills the carafe with more water.
"Awesome, thanks." And then Sam's gone off to do horrifying morning activities like jogging.
Dean, however, is doing something even more horrifying. He fills the coffee maker with pumpkin spice flavored coffee and grimaces. But God help him, Cas loves the stuff. And Dean loves Cas, so he'll make him some freakin' pumpkin spice coffee. Though this is the only point in the entire day when he questions his love for Cas. Just a little bit.
As nutmeg and cinnamon fill the air, Dean chugs his respectable cup of plain ol' dark roast and browses the contents of the refrigerator.
Blueberries. He should use those up too. Dean plucks them, some eggs, some butter, some milk, and all of the stuff for Sam’s atrocious vegetable omelette from the fridge.
Jack comes shuffling in while Dean is mixing up blueberry pancake batter, looking sleepy but chipper. He looks even happier when he sees what Dean’s cooking. “Excellent timing! Chop Sam’s tomatoes for me,” Dean commands before Jack even has a chance to say a ‘good morning!’ or grab some juice. The coffee is finally kicking in and dragging him into full wakefulness, but the patient parts of Dean’s brain don’t come online until at least 9am.
Eileen isn’t far behind Jack, but she takes one look at Dean with his spatula and Jack at the cutting board and immediately backs out of the kitchen. “Sorry! Dunno what you’re saying!” she shouts as she retreats, as if she expected Dean to try calling out orders after her. “I’m gonna shower!” Dean sighs and shakes his head. Probably for the best. She handles produce and a chef's knife the same way she does with vampires and a machete.
“Hello, Dean. Jack.” Cas drags himself into the kitchen with half-open eyes. His sleep-rough voice is adorable. The wild shock of hair standing up on one side, even moreso.
“Mornin’ Sunshine!” Dean croons at full volume, like he does every morning, because he’s kind of an asshole and secretly likes the way Cas scowls at Dean’s energy as he makes a cup of his terrible pumpkin spice coffee.
Cas comes up behind Dean and rests his chin over his shoulder to watch him cook, like he’s too tired to even bother holding up his own head. Dean has to be careful how he moves his arm so he doesn’t burn himself on Cas’ hot mug, but he’d be lying if he said this wasn’t one of his favorite parts of the day. Cas tucked up against his back, sleep hazy and warm from their shared bed, those beautiful blues blinking owlishly as Dean makes food for their family.
“Sure you don’t want any?” he asks, pointing down at the griddle even though he knows the answer already.
“No, too early to eat,” Cas grunts by his ear. “Coffee is enough. It smells delicious though.” He tilts his head down to press a gentle kiss to Dean’s shoulder before he pulls away to slouch down in a chair and finish waking up.
By the time Dean finishes breakfast, Sam and Eileen have filtered in too, completing their packed table. For a brief moment it’s utter chaos as everyone grabs plates of food and cutlery and coffee and juice, but before Dean can blink everyone is settled, chowing down on their breakfast or quietly drinking their awful flavored coffee. Dean lets out a weary sigh and sinks down into a chair next to Cas with his own stack of pancakes. It’s way too early to feel this tired.
Almost immediately Cas tilts sideways until he’s using Dean as a headrest again. "I don't see how you can stand getting up so early," Cas says around a slow sip of his coffee. He closes his eyes in appreciation and hums softly.
Dean glances around the table. At Sam, his overly long hair plastered to his sweaty forehead, scrolling through his phone as he shovels egg white omelette into his mouth like he's starving for it. At Eileen, a pleased grin on her face as her closed fist moves in a circle in front of her, her thumb pointed down over her stack of pancakes. At Jack, watching her intently as she teaches him a new sign, his fork suspended halfway to his mouth until a bite of pancake falls off it and smacks onto the table, making Eileen laugh.
At his family, fed and caffeinated and content, ready to start their days because Dean took the extra time to get things off on the right foot.
"I dunno," Dean says with a shrug as he passes Jack the bottle of syrup. He grins. "I kinda like mornings."

Underground Headcanons
I have so many headcanons about the life in the Underground.
The only reason the government within the walls hasn’t let the population of the Underground die off is because of the cheap labor in the factories.
All factories within the walls exist Underground, out of sight, unable to pollute the air Above. A factory job is considered a good job, even though the wage is atrocious. Factories know they they can get away with paying slave wages because the people are so desperate for work and the resources it provides.
One of the things the factories produce is the gas canisters for ODM/3DMG gear. This is why Levi, Farlan, and Isabel don’t worry about conserving gas when flying, they can easily steal more.
Levi’s mother, Kutchel, first tried to get a factory job when she went into hiding Underground. The foreman said she could work if she slept with him. She did, but he lied and laughed her out of the building. Any other attempt was unsuccessful because the work is in such high demand. She resorted to prostitution instead.
Corruption is rife Underground, but it’s an accepted part of life. Factory owners, the crocked police, and gang leaders run the city.
Everyone knows about the slave trade, but no one speaks about it.
Military police technically patrol the Underground, but they can’t be bothered to do their jobs. Being placed in the Underground as a member of the military police is a demotion or punishment for pissing off someone higher in the chain of command.
The water underground is all polluted because of lack of proper sewer systems as well as the sewer from Above. All water needs to be filtered and boiled. Clean, fresh water is more valuable than gold.
There is no day and night cycle Underground due to the lack of natural light. Shops are open when they are open. Factory shifts rotate every after 12 hours. There is no specified time to sleep and rest, everyone rests at random times when tired. (This contributes to Levi’s insomnia and his inability to relax easily in order to sleep. He feels like he has to be constantly alert at all times because the Underground never sleeps.)
Lamps lit near the staircases during daylight hours signal when the day and night cycles Above. The lamps are the only form of a clock most people use Underground.
The is no formal education Underground.
People of the Underground are not considered citizens. Therefore there is no formal census. Population is estimated due to the number of factory workers.
Most of the food Underground comes from grains, though overripe vegetables and the occasional fruit make their way down as well. The most common meat is dog, cat, and rat.
Oil, candles, and grain are the most imported items in the Underground from Above.
Lucky individuals are allowed to work Above, usually as maids or servants in the capital. It’s not unheard of for employers venture below to recruit Underground because labor is cheaper. The workers are given official documents to use the staircase daily, though many still face trouble passing and need to provide bribes.
The number 1 cause of death underground is starvation. The 2nd is disease, specifically the one that affects muscle and bone in the legs due to lack of sunlight. To everyone’s surprise murder is only the 3rd.

little bumps in the road (pt. 13)
Previously on LBitR...
For the first time in quite a while, things seem to be going well.
It’s not even an exaggeration--the RV lab, though a little on the rudimentary side compared to all Lena is used to--is actually very well-equipped, and after only a few days of further research and a little tinkering, Lena finally feels confident to get things going.
She’s been eager to start working on this--she’s been desperately eager for it to work just how she knows it will.
Lena announced her plan to get started only a few days ago, and ever since then, Kara has been grinning like an idiot, following Lena around the small space of the RV and listening, completely enraptured, as Lena explains what they’ll be doing and how.
“So, how are we doing this?” Kara asks when Lena finally has everything in order, excitedly rolling up her sleeves to start the first session. She flops onto the pull-down cot as Lena connects different tubes and wires to the machine.
“Well, blood comes out one arm,” Lena explains, tapping the barely visible vein on Kara’s arm with her finger, “and then goes through this incredibly high-tech, extremely advanced Kryptonite filter--” Kara snorts “--and goes back into your other arm, hopefully Kryptonite-free.”
“Awesome!” Kara exclaims, only to crinkle her brows in confusion as Lena straps her arms down. “Wait a minute, I can’t use either arm?? Lena, I’m going to die of boredom!”
Lena shoots her a look as she tightens the left strap. Kara has the grace to look slightly apologetic. “Too soon for I’m-gonna-die jokes, gotcha.”
“It will always be too soon for I’m-gonna-die jokes,” Lena mutters, thoroughly unamused. “And anyway, you’ll survive sitting still for two hours at a time,” she continues, pressing a button on a hidden panel on the RV wall. “There’s TV.”
Kara lets out an actual squeal of happiness when the monitor pops out of the wall, at the perfect angle for her to lie back and watch—Alex had the forethought of adding a hard-drive full of Disney movies so Kara would be entertained during the filtration process. She knew her sister well.
The main problem with the filtration device was that the machine itself could only run for a couple of hours at a time, meaning several sessions would be required for Kara’s blood to be well and truly Kryptonite-free. Lena assumes this is why Alex had given them this mobile lab—they couldn’t afford to stay in one place for too long. This way, Kara could lie back and let the machine do the work, and Lena do the driving, if required, though Lena herself would much rather keep things stationary when messing with needles.
They settle on a routine, more or less. The RV is mostly self-sufficient with its discreetly enhanced solar panels and a full water tank; if they’re fully gassed up, they can stay off the grid much longer than they could with the Jeep. This reduces their stays in small towns and roadside motels to the bare-minimum (meaning, whenever Lena complains enough that they absolutely need to do laundry or when they have another checkpoint call with Alex).
Lena doesn’t mind—she’s almost enjoying these secluded spots they’ve been finding along the way; so empty and desolate it is like they are practically untouched by civilization. It’s almost peaceful, with Kara snoring while she dozes watching Hercules for the fourth time (she even convinced Lena to join her on the cot one time so they could watch together) and the filtration device beeping and whirring rhythmically.
The amount of Kryptonite being collected each time is minimal—a dusting of microscopic green each time, barely enough to be seen with the naked eye. The progress is slower than Lena would like, but they’re progressing steadily enough considering their circumstances, and she tells Alex as much during their next call.
They’re all the way in Illinois, and the weather is beginning to turn. Lena holds onto her green flannel as a gust of wind chills her, seeking refuge into the cabin of the payphone.
It’s all done by rote, now—Lena’s been the one calling Alex more and more often now, giving updates to Kara’s condition, and occasionally dealing with Alex’s barely contained frustration at the crawling speeds it goes by.
Lena dials, and waits for the requisite two rings. The ‘hello, yes,’ is always said gruffly, but Lena can usually tell there’s undeniable relief in Alex’s tone.
“Twenty-one, Illinois,” Lena says. “Progressing as usual.”
“Good.”
“We’ll be at the next one by Tuesday.”
“Good.” Dial tone.
And so it goes. It becomes… comfortable, in a way, to have clear goals and tasks to accomplish. Tracking the Kryptonite collected each day, analysing Kara’s blood, checking in with Alex—all of it gives Lena something to focus on, and she takes it gladly.
Even when Kara gets a little cranky after being strapped in for too long.
“Leeeenaaa…” she will occasionally whine. “Leeeeenaaaaa.”
Lena has to hold back her sigh, and look over from her calculations—she’s trying to see how long it will take to cleanse Kara’s system, and it’s taking annoyingly long. “What is it this time?”
“I’m hungry.” Kara pouts.
Lena raises a brow, glancing at her watch—a brand new one Kara won at a bar back in Arkansas that, inexplicably, featured a claw-machine. The watch is bright yellow and has a picture of Tweedy Bird on the face—it’s atrociously hideous. “You just ate two hours ago.”
“And I’ve been here for a whole hour!” Kara points out through her pout. “It’s important to eat every three hours, don’t ya know?”
Lena can’t help rolling her eyes. “Well, can’t you wait another hour?”
Kara’s stomach, growling loud enough to be heard above the gentle humming of the machine, seems to disagree, and that’s how Lena ends up sitting on the cot, squished against Kara, hand-feeding her individual Pringles chips.
Lena eyes the can with disgust. “Pizza-flavoured? I didn’t even know this was a thing.”
Kara nods, munching happily. “It’s delicious! Try one.”
“I think I’ll pass,” Lena quips, brushing some Pringle-dust from where it’s gathering on Kara’s shirt. “You know these are not even real potatoes, right? They’re like. Potato dust.”
“Marvelously delicious potato dust.”
It’s like that, day in, day out. Lena isn’t really complaining—oddly enough, this is the most normal things have felt between them since… well, since everything, and right now she’s not too worried about looking a gift horse in the mouth.
They’re in Maine the next time they have to check-in, and all things considered, everything is going swimmingly. Lena had looked at a fresh sample of Kara’s blood just last night, and there are fewer and fewer traces of Kryptonite in her system, which is incredible news. Her powers seem to be returning, as well, little by little. There’s no super-strength or invulnerability yet, but two nights ago, Kara had been hovering in her sleep. So, all in all, things are looking up.
Kara’s finishing up a session in the parked RV when Lena goes to call this time, bundled up in a jacket they acquired two towns over—it’s beginning to get really cold, really fast. They parked a few blocks away from the nearest payphone, and it’s on the way there that Lena feels something is off.
Always trust your gut.
She pulls her baseball cap over her eyes and puts her hands deep in her pockets as she idly looks around—there are a few shops open in town, and she uses their bright storefronts as an excuse to linger and examine her surroundings. Lena’s almost to the payphone when she spots him.
On the street corner, leaning against a building, lighting a cigarette.
Lena can’t decide whether to run back to Kara or to the payphone, to tell Alex they’ve been spotted. The man hasn’t looked at her yet, but Lena has no doubt in her mind—it’s the same man she had seen in Texas, the one she thought had been watching them.
She practically sprints to the phone—she’s so, so close. The man doesn’t seem to notice her as she scrambles with the chord and punches in Alex’s number, but he turns his head just as she hears Alex’s voice through the receiver after the first ring, and Lena feels her heart in her throat. Their eyes meet, and he smiles, slow and dangerous.
“This is Danvers. Hello?”
Lena drops the phone—it bounces and dangles from the chord, hitting the booth walls with a deafening clatter—when she looks up again, the man is gone.

4,14,21,22 and 29 for the romance asks for John and Jestiny?
thank you lydia!!! apologies for these taking a while and for rambling answers!
Tumblr media
4. Their favorite physical feature on each other?
answered here!
14. Is their anything they associate with each other?
answered here!
21. Personally, do you think they are a good couple?
oh fuck no oh god no not even a little. while i do actually plan on having them eventually develop into a healthier, more stable dynamic in their main storyline, i think they always maintain a certain level of codependence that would not be good in any real life relationship. and in every universe i’ve created for them so far even if they do get to a point of healthy mutual nurturing, the initial spark that brings them together is usually toxic enough that the happiness they eventually get really can’t justify the damage they do in the beginning and the fact the relationship like, actively hurts several innocent third parties as well sksjsksgk.
the most benign universe i have for them is probably their no cult au and even then they aren’t like healthy because they get way too attached way too quickly. (the basic premise is jessie wanders in during a party, breaks his shit, passes out, wakes up and bickers with him some more the next morning, but just... never leaves.)
i’ll grant they do have a high capacity for mutual understanding and a lot of underlying similarities that could make them compatible and also balance each other nicely at times, but... most of the time that just makes them bring out the worst in each other.
22. From the outside looking in, what is their dynamic like?
answered here!
29. What are your favorite moments that happen between them?
aaaaah so this is hard to answer completely right now because my favorite moments are actually coming up in some of the next chapters of their fic and i don’t want to spoil it, but of everything that’s happened so far, it’s probably the end of their dinner date in wildfire when jessie stops to give a little speech like “look buddy i amn just... a normall gurl... average. leave me alone.” and john’s like “lie. dishonesty penalty invoked.”
because it’s sweet in it’s own fucked up way and is really representative of the dynamic they develop, because like 1) there was really no reason for jessie to stick around and give that speech in the first place. she should have just taken her shit and left. but she’s incapable of shutting up around him and has to make her point. 2) she not only wasn’t actually lying to him during that speech, she did in her own roundabout way confess her greatest fear: that she’s really just completely mediocre. 3) john matching her “intimacy but filter it through a complicated mind game so we don’t have to be vulnerable” beat for beat to say “actually no that’s not true deputy” with his own dumb dramatic system (and bonus points for it forcing her to stare at his fingers again). 4) the fact jessie turned around to look at him at all when he called for her to wait. small detail, but again, she really should have just gotten out of there and not prolonged that interaction. 5) the fact at least three innocent parties were being forced to witness or participate in their theatrics. 6) jessie lowkey obsessing over it later.
also in wildfire honorable mentions to jessie taking time off scavenging to lay around and chat with john on the radio and dreamily wonder what he’s doing at the moment because i love making these atrocious assholes who both have immeasurable blood on their hands act like lovesick middle schoolers and to jessie getting stuck in a hole she dug and refusing to take john’s hand to let him help pull her up but being fine with grabbing at his thigh to scurry up his leg like a squirrel climbing a tree. romance.
in no reaping au my favorite moment is probably them pretending they aren’t talking to each other by yelling at poor, scared staci pratt who’s just trying to do his job while these assholes use him as a conduit to have an entire screaming argument about the details of cattle ranching laws which neither of them even really care about that much.
