Lol I can't believe that this comic ended with Steve, Bucky, and Sharon happily going on a run together after all the bullshit with Ian. Ah, comics. Never change.
(Actually, please do. I really can't handle all the poor writing.)

some thoughts on this cap run since it's coming to an end now ( finally ).
there are just so many things about sentinel of liberty & cold war that were terrible. the amount of wasted time ( ten issues and majority of them are just filler bs that doesn't do any good ), killing roger, the lack of actual development - steve has friends now out of nowhere ; bucky is...well everything was wrong with bucky ; the overcomplicated, under explained outer circle lore - the lies the writers tweeted to hype up the run only for the majority of it to never happen, killing roger, everything to do with sharon, the lack of accountability being held against bucky and peggy, ian being brought back with no explanation and then...not wanting to see his family after years?? for some reason?? KILLING ROGER.
murdering roger so callously has to take the cake as the worst part. then to have his funeral be as disrespectful as it was? ( really? all you could have namor muster up was that " he was gorgeous "? one of his oldest friends, and that's ALL he'd have to say? ) and the poem steve says is fine, or at least would be if we'd seen him grieving at all this entire time since roger's death. but he hasn't been. ( the only person we even saw openly react to roger's death was sharon and we'll get into how stupid that is later ).
then there's the little shit :
the fact that they mentioned shipping steve and bucky, even though comic steve and bucky are a father and son duo
them having peggy basically call natasha a slut and get away with it
the weird " did steve or did steve not cheat on sharon with emma " jokes when he didn't
peggy actively pointing a GUN at emma and preparing to fire and then being told by everyone that that's okay & not being questioned for why she'd be so adversive to get out of literal mind control
bucky shooting steve and then dropping him off a building and having the nerve to ask why he's upset with him
need i go on with those?
now back to roger because again, everything that had to do with him in this story was...ugh. it's bad enough to take a character out of comic limbo just to kill him, even worse when he's one of marvel's many underappreciated and underused gay characters. but how do you make it even more disrespectful, i wonder? oh, i know, having your lead female character say, in her eulogy about him, that he was " a damn mess " when she admits to only knowing him for a week, and then that looking at him was " like looking in a mirror ", and comparing his experiences as a gay man in the 40s, to hers as a woman in the 60s ( is it still 60s? idk, i think so. points still stands ) and then having her confidently steal the spotlight from him at his funeral to show off that she's taking on his mantle. what were they even thinking? not only is it blatantly ooc, but it's just plain gross and cruel. it shows that they never cared about roger, or steve, or sharon, or anyone in that book, like they claimed to.
there are ultimately no words for how much i hate this run at this point, and i am confident in believing that finale #1 will only make it worse.

A little rant about Captain America Cold War Alpha
mostly about Bucky, ofc, ‘couse you know, he is like that...
I’ve been ok with a lot of things Bucky has done through the Sentinel of Liberty run, I was ok with him shooting at Steve to kill the old Revolution, I was ok with his choice to join the circle to tear them down from the inside, I was ok with him doing the dirty work once again (not in the way I’d like to intend the sentence, LOL, but ok you get me, sorry for the stupid joke) and all because I could see where this all was coming from: he felt betrayed for yet another time in his life, discovering he was all along a pawn of something greater and more twisted than what he thought, he was lost and he wanted to act, no matter what. I even liked it to some extent, to see him trying and having agency for once, on his own.
But Cold War Alpha threw me off in a way.
I mean, Bucky may have his own moral compass, different from the one Steve and Sam look up to, he has endured some dark things and experimented the worst of mankind on his own skin, and these things are now part of who he is, no matter what, but in spite of all the bad he has never been a heartless, cold person. On the contrary. He may be a disillusioned man with still a tiny spark of hope in his heart that redemption is still possible, even coming to such a high cost (a cost he is ready to pay when it comes to HIMSELF).
But “torturing” Ian, he who was tortured for most of his life himself? Saying he won’t be happy when the Captains will be DEAD - well at least- but that he will be winning then??? Well, this is going a bit too far, tbh. I feel like the writers are now really pushing too much for shock value and they’re starting to lose grip on the character. Yes, there’s still the possibility this is all for a show off, all double agent criss cross shit, and probably this is how CW will end, but still, it felt really too much for me.
Also Peggy involvement is a bit too forced. She isn’t a saint for sure, but isn’t an evil person either. If I was in Steve, Sharon and Sam place I would think these people are just gone straigh insane, lol. I don’t know, it feels like the Outer Circle’s excuse is not strong enough to justify all this madness.
Maybe is just me, idk.
Btw Sam and Misty were the cutest.
Still hoping Natasha will beat some good sense into Bucky’s head next month. I’m more scared than ever at this time, but still...
I know this was supposed to be a short rant, LOL, but shortness? Never known her in my whole life, I assure you!

Captains America Reunite in “Captain America: Cold War”
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have both been using the mantle of Captain America in the pages of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Carmen Carnero and Captain America: Symbol of Truth by Tochi Onyebuchi and R.B. Silva. Now the two Captains are about to reunited for the crossover event Captain America: Cold War.
Spoilers ahead.
Cold War kicks off with a prelude in Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11. Captain America and the Invaders are free of M.O.D.O.C.’S mind control, but now the Outer Circle has arrived. Steve will have to fight the Power and end the Outer Circle’s invasion of Manhattan for good.
Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty goes on sale on April 5, 2023.
Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1 hails from writers Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Tochi Onybuchi and artist Carlos Magno. “Bucky Barnes is the Outer Circle’s New Revolution, and he has enacted his deadliest move yet—an alliance with Sam Wilson’s nemesis, the White Wolf. When Steve Rogers’ adopted son, Ian, AKA Nomad, is abducted by someone Steve thought was a friend, he suspects Bucky’s hand at work and calls upon the people who know Ian best -- Sam Wilson, Sharon Carter, and Misty Knight -- to help him get to the bottom of the attack. Has Bucky finally gone too far? Why has Nomad been taken, and what does it have to do with a portal to Dimension Z opening over a secret battleground in Alaska?” (Marvel Comics)
Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1, featuring a cover by Patrick Gleason, goes on sale on April 12, 2023.
Captain America: Symbol of Truth #12 is part two of Cold War. Will Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers be able to agree on the priorities needed to end the newest threat? White Wolf has taken control of Dimension Z and set the creatures on Sam and Steve and it also turns out that the Outer Circle has more stakes in the fight than the Captains realized. Also, What are Bucky’s plans for Ian Rogers?
Captain America: Symbol of Truth #12 goes on sale on April 26, 2023.

I can’t wait for the Cold War drama.
Steve: Yeah and so Bucky shot me to join an evil secret organization and he’s kidnapped my son. But he’s not evil. I think. I’m starting to get mad, personally, a little bit. He wants to destroy them from within. Because he learned they like orchestrated his entire life and killed his parents and forced him to kill. I don’t think he’s sleeping, honestly?
Sam: I literally left you alone for two seconds to fight White Wolf. I solved like three international incidents and caused the same amount.
Steve: Hope Joaquin’s on the mend. Yeah about White Wolf...
Sam: …WHAT
Bucky, from his evil lair: I’ll probably die but honestly that’s fine at this point really just please watch my cat

this is why sam is my favorite cap. other people are excited and honored when steve asks for their help, and sam literally said "it's a you problem" and went back to his own shit

bucky being a such a huge menace, shooting steve and pitting him against sam in cold war... and ofc he enjoyed this shit-show because he knew steve would still pull out the usual "i believe bucky could change" and you have no idea I'M ABOUT TO CHOP OFF HIS BEAUTIFUL HAIR-BUN AND MAKE HIM BALD

let's talk about captain america : symbol of truth #13 ( spoilers below, obviously ). tldr at the end but i think you'll miss the point im trying to make if you skip to it.
i've seen a lot of people really upset over steve and sam's fight in this issue and rightfully so, but they're upset for the wrong reasons.
steve and sam have fought multiple times over multiple things. they're best friends, they're brothers, but they're people all the same, and people are notorious for letting their emotions get the better of them and acting out of turn.
this entire issue is steve acting on pretty severe ptsd. we pick up immediately after he, sam, sharon, and misty are almost blown up in dimension z. steve, as a war vet, already has ptsd and trauma with combat in general, hence his immediate non - reaction to the bomb. he's tuned out how bad it is because he can't reconcile with how bad this trauma is. we've seen steve have therapists in the past and he repeatedly is unable to handle his trauma from the war. this is another showcase of it. if he acknowledges how bad it is, it bogs him down, and he's understandably unwilling to let it take over. this is without mentioning the ten brutal years he spent in dimension z, which we know he suffers greatly from. dimension z was a war zone that he thought he'd never escape from while he simultaneously raised a newborn into a ten year old boy who hated hearing about the real world, the only thing that kept steve sane.
sam, on the opposite end, is, of course, horrified and upset about this. he, misty, and sharon were almost killed, and steve seemed completely unfazed. he even comments on this :
i've never seen steve like this. i mentioned misty and sharon, and he didn't even bat an eye. he's completely ready to abandon them. and he just nearly put a whole in my chest. what the hell did he and ian go through here?
they, of course, proceed to have a full blown fight. while at first, sam is just trying to protect himself, steve inevitably throws really low blows, and it forces sam to fight back.
you of all people should know what it's like to lose family, who you're supposed to protect. your mother. your father. how many people have you loved and lost? how many people have we loved and lost? think about your family. ian's my family.
now, this is particularly hard to read for more than one reason ( and a bit out of character for another, but we'll get to that in a bit ).
reason number one is of course that sam thinks about his family all the time. his father, paul, was killed trying to break up a violent fight in their neighborhood, and his mother, darlene, was killed in a mugging while trying to protect her kids. sam, as he even says in this issue, would give up anything to have been able to save them and to have them back, and steve knows this. so for steve to insinuate that he doesn't is ludicrous.
reason number two is of course that steve also lost his parents young ( i bring this point up as a response to people saying steve has no idea what losing his family as a child is like. he does, it just doesn't justify using it against sam. both can be true ). steve, as of remender's canon, grew up watching his father repeatedly abuse his mother, and suffering from said abuse as well, until he died from influenza ( or a heart attack ) when steve was about 8. sarah herself died when steve was about 14 - 16 from pneumonia. one of steve's greatest regrets in life is that he couldn't protect her from his father and couldn't keep her alive. it makes him using this against sam all the more cruel.
the third reason is, even simpler, that sam, misty, and sharon are also his family. and that writing him as uncaring toward them is odd and somewhat ooc. but at least that can be continuously attributed to the fact that he is dealing with a lot of the aforementioned ptsd right now.
the ooc part of this issue, and the event as a whole let's be honest, is the fact that unfortunately, due to rick remender, ian spent over half a decade being a completely unmentioned character, from steve and sharon alike. this is the first appearance he's had since 2016 and a flashback cameo right before secret empire ( but even that was just an unnamed picture of people steve cared about ). there is nothing in canon to support steve reacting this way to ian being in trouble now. the last time steve talked about ian was when sam told him he'd probably died, and while steve was hopeful that he was alright, he and sharon brushed it off because " he'll probably turn up ". in fact, when sharon brought up him maybe being alive earlier in sentinel, steve immediately turned that notion down, saying he was dead and that was it.
it's a normal reaction of grief to deny that after all this time that person might still be alive, but the switch up is not. steve reacting like this would be normal had we seen him grieving for ian. it's not the fault of the current sentinel & symbol writers that steve only just now cares about ian, but it becomes a detriment because we knew from remender that steve cared about ian more than maybe anyone else, and now has to act like it when he didn't before. ( it's also come at the detriment of sharon and his relationship with her because not only does it mean he never learned his lesson from what happened to her, but it also goes to show that outside of the book, marvel still doesn't consider her to be ian's mother, and the writers have all but abandoned her concern over him that she had in the former issue ).
all that being said, it makes steve's reaction to sam trying to stop him all the harder to read. neither of them are exactly " out of character " in the issue, but it still feels like unnatural lengths to go to have them fight. we all knew they'd have to eventually, and that it likely wouldn't make much sense as it's an event book, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow as it's happening, and it definitely doesn't look good on steve's part, even though intense anger is absolutely an understandable ptsd response.
steve as a character is supposed to be flawed in a relatable way. he's over protective and gets angry and deals with a lot of trauma that he can't wrap his head around. he was a jerk in this issue, and sam had every right to dive bomb him into the ground, but it's not as simple as " steve's a bad guy " or " steve should die he's nasty " or any of that. even sam doesn't think of him like that, why would you?
the lack of emotional care and nuance that goes into reading comics just because they're comics is more than irritating at this point. steve and sam arguing doesn't make one bad and the other good, as both are understandable in the situation. steve wants to get his family ( ian included ) out of dimension z as soon as possible. he and sharon are the only ones who know what it's like there and how it can hurt you if you stay longer than absolutely necessary. i have a hard time believing that if she was fully coherent, sharon wouldn't have agreed with him ( albeit she wouldn't have agreed with how forceful he was about it ). but just like he's justified in his side of it, sam is just as justified in being upset about steve seeming disinterested in recovery. he's worried about what happens to them if they keep going, just like steve is worried for what happens to them if they don't.
it's not a civil war comic where one is clearly right and the other is blatantly wrong. that was the whole point in showing how sympathetic sam was toward steve in the issue.
tldr : just because two characters fight and you don't agree with the other one because of a flaw, doesn't mean one is right and the other is downright evil, and people ignoring the blatant panels of sam understanding that steve is not himself just to claim steve is a bad person is stupid.

I have been thinking about this for a while now, and the thought is really bugging me a little 🤔
It's probably still too soon to say without knowing how Cold War and Bucky's own mission will end, but...

Cold War Alpha spoilers time.
+I am in love with Misty Knight and Sam Wilson. They’re so cute together. Misty held all the plans here!
-Sometimes I really struggle with comic art and this issue’s style was visually hard for me to get through. I did appreciate the coloring, though.
+Sam looking disturbed on Bucky’s behalf finding out he was a star point, Sam pointing out that Bucky’s too smart to be seen by accident, Sam also believing Bucky will kill Ian MY SAMBUCKY HEART BE STILL THE DRAMA
+/-Idk I don’t buy Bucky’s “can’t wait to kill all the Caps.” It sort of seems like a front for White Wolf. If this is a spy thriller, then nothing should be what it seems. It cannot be a coincidence that Bucky is tangled up with White Wolf that Sam just so happened to be fighting two seconds ago. Bucky wanted to bring Sam into the game.
But I can’t imagine it’s to get him killed. Maybe they really do want Bucky to be too far gone, but it doesn’t seem consistent with what we’ve seen so far. I have no idea what the plan is, tho. I remember how this started for Bucky: he broke into Fisk’s place to get his records….. but he also stole and burned the records of others so they couldn’t be blackmailed by Fisk. I don’t see Bucky giving White Wolf free reign with no about face coming.
Maybe I also just don’t want Bucky to go full villain?
We’ll see what happens!
