Book Scavenger Hunt Meme
Challenge: Find, on your bookshelves, (a) a book beginning with S, (b) a book set in the springtime, (c) a book with birds on the cover, (d) a book with flowers on the cover, then tag someone else.
OK, so the books I've picked are:
Tumblr media
(a) A book beginning with S: Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari.
This book was so hyped when it came out that, at first, I refused to read it on principle, assuming it was overrated. Actually, it’s a book that I genuinely think everyone should read. I’m sure it has flaws, but it’s a wonderfully clear condensed history of humanity, stretching from prehistoric times to the present day. Even if you think you know a lot about that already, this book will help you to put it all into perspective, whether or not you agree with all of the author’s conclusions.
(b) a book set in the springtime: Great Northern? by Arthur Ransome
The last of the Swallows and Amazons books, a series very close to my heart. Ideal books for the child (or nostalgic adult) who enjoys boats and the outdoors...or curling up with a book and reading about such things from the comfort of their own armchair. This instalment is an adventure to protect some rare nesting birds from egg-collectors. I love the cover of this edition.
(c) a book with birds on the cover: The Junior Puffin Quiz Book
Such a cute cover. And on the back page, the sun has come out and the owl and puffin have folded up their umbrella! Originally published in the 1960′s, the quiz questions are not so much useless trivia as Things Every Good Child Should Know, clearly intended to broaden one’s mind. Surprisingly challenging, actually. There’s a question with an extract from The Adventure of the Gloria Scott, and you’re asked what characters are speaking...evidently Sherlock Holmes was considered mandatory reading in those days. Quite right, too!
(d) a book with flowers on the cover: The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields
If I were to describe the plot, it would sound boring, so I won’t. It’s not boring at all – it’s real, proper literature that, magically, says more than it says, if you get me. Worth reading slowly and savouring. The main theme is how people (especially women) can feel that they have no influence over the course of their life, things happen to them rather than being performed by them.
I tag any of my followers who would like an excuse to have a root through their bookshelves!

“the human and the divine are balanced across a dazzling equation: man's creation of God being exactly equal to God's creation of man, one unified mind bending like a snake around the curve of earth and heaven.”
