The Locked Tomb Series Names and Symbolism #4
Hiya folks! Hope you are all doing fine and dandy. This series ofc couldn’t be complete without our beloved Sex-Pal in the count. Now according to wiki there are two figures that inspired the Master Warden, Παλαμήδης, the Greek mythological hero that took part in the Trojan war, and Palamedes the Arthurian knight. I am more well-versed in the Greek myths than I am in Medieval plays, I admit, but I will do my best to do justice by both these inspirations.
But first things first, some etymology. There are two most prominent versions for the etymology of the name Palamedes or well, Παλαμήδης. In the first one, it’s a derivative of the verb παλαμάομαι meaning devise/contrive and invent. Aka the inventor that devises plans (Or concocts schemes, depending on how you want to see it). In the second one it is believed to derive from the verb παλαίω => παλεύω aka fight and μήδομαι => σκέφτομαι, συμβουλεύω aka think and advise. So, Palamedes would be the one that thinks abt the battle and gives advice for it. Both etymologies I feel fit our inventive strategist, The Master Warden of the Sixth, to a t.
Let us now begin with the Greek hero from the Trojan war. And no my pals, this is not yet another Iliad reference, for our proclaimed hero does not actually appear in the Iliad. His first appearance is in what has been known as the Κύπρια, a well-known epic of the ancient Greek literature that despite being quite famous during the classical period, has been lost to the sands of time. Long story short, this epic is a part of the Trojan circle and follows the conclusion of the Iliad. Palamedes’ story is one of many included in the epic that counts I think 11 books.
Truth to be told, Mythological Palamedes did star in quite a few epics, tragedies and other works that refer to the Trojan war or the time after it, but for the sake of keeping the post relatively short, and since I do not quite have the time to hunt down every ancient text reference and draw a parallel to the Master Warden, we’ll mostly reference the most relative ones and I’ll leave a list in the end, in case some of you do want to go hunting ancient texts.
I’ll start with a fun fact. According to a Trojan priest of Hephestus, Dares the Phrygian, Palamedes was described as tall, slender, wise, magnanimous, and charming. Now I cannot speak for everyone, but well, to me that sounds like Palamedes Sextus.
In general, there are not many direct parallels that I can make between Palamedes the Euboian and Palamedes Sextus, bar for the most obvious one, that they are both ingenious. Palamedes the mythological figure was accredited with inventing part of the Greek Alphabet, lighthouses, navigation, coins, the division of time into months days and hours and a few board games, with κύβοι being one of the most prominent (to my understanding it’s the equivalent to dice). Palamedes Sextus on the other hand, figured out the secret to Lyctorhood, necromantically bound his soul to his skeleton, saw through Cytherea’s ploy, exploded himself, created a bubble in the River in which he persevered until Camila could glue his skull back together and he figured out a way to co-exist with her, in her own body, without killing them both, plus the Grand Lysis and Paul’s creation.
What mostly sticks with me from the above, among others, is navigation. One Palamedes is the inventor of it, and the other, though by that point is Paul, seems to know a way to the Tomb via the River. The river that even God struggles navigating – at least with other people on the way. So, could it be, that Palamedes -that beat even Cassiopeia in time survived in the River – figures out a way to truly navigate this sea of the dead?
Two smaller parallels we could draw from mythological Palamedes are 1. Pal seeing through Cytherea’s ploy, the same way that Palamedes the Euboian saw through Odysseus’ ploy when he wanted to avoid fighting in Troy and played mad, plowing the earth with a horse and an ox throwing salt in the holes.   2. The syphoning challenge. This story also includes Palamedes butting heads with Odysseus – not going to lie to you, they were evenly matched in genius – although according to some accounts it’s Palamedes who was the brightest and most ingenious of the Greeks - , but Odysseus never forgave him for uncovering his ploy and may or may not have orchestrated Palamedes’ murder – only in this analogy Pal is Odysseus. In a time of great hunger for the Achaeans, Odysseus was sent to Thrace to find wheat and returned empty-handed. Palamedes mocked him, and Odysseus replied that for all his ingenuity he too would return emptyhanded. Palamedes did embark on the quest and was successful, returning with shiploads of supplies. In the syphoning challenge, Pal is Odysseus, the one who turns up empty handed, refusing to risk Camila’s well-being once he figured out how the test worked. And he is also the one that tries to talk Harrow out of completing the challenge. Harrow much like the mythological Palamedes jumps in the opportunity to prove herself – through the challenge’s objective had little to do with proving one’s self, as we saw – and succeeds, obtaining the key.
All in all, the biggest parallel’s we can draw here, is that Pal like his mythological namesake is a genius inventor and strategist, a bright necromancer and brighter scholar still. He is the Odysseus in Harrow’s Palamedes and vice versa.
And now that I drew the parallel with Odysseus I cannot unsee it. He made his body the Trojan horse that exploded in Cytherea’s face. He was stranded in the River – the sea of the undead, of the souls and corpses and all that nice stuff – for however long it took Camilla to piece the skull together, like Odysseus lost in the seas. He found his Ogygia in Camila’s mind where he stays safely stored until his stop in the island of the Phaeacians – Naberius’ body. A brief stop gathering supplies, gathering courage before going home. Back to Camilla, but now as one. There is no him and her anymore. They have had a home in each other, and it’s time he returned to it, burning down the ruins of the past, and getting reborn as something new, together, as one. (Cam and Pal are a phoenix metaphor if I have ever seen one.)
Onto the Arthurian Palamedes now, our friend was a knight of the round table, and makes his first appearance in an expansion of the Tristan and Iseult legend, as a knight vying for the princess’ hand, much like our beloved Sex-Pal wanted Dulcinea’s affections. There are no Trsitans in this world however, merely Cytherea as an imposter.
Now what is interesting about the Arthurian Palamedes, is that according to various tales he is the hunter of the Questing Beast – a multi animal snake like monster that he, Percival and Galahad are tasked with exterminating. In most versions the hunt is futile and bears no results. After Palamedes converts to Christianity however, releasing himself from the worldly entanglements, he is finally able to slay the beast after the other two trap it in a lake. My theory here is that the Questing Beast, Beast Glatisant or whatever you want to call it, is a Resurrection Beast, perhaps even Varun the Eater. And the Warden has “converted to Christianity” by ascending, aka completing the Lyctorhood process. He shed his mortal shell, disentangled himself from the coils of mortality and worldly needs, becoming very much the equivalent of the “converted Palamedes”.
Practically, to sum up, Pal through Lyctorhood and Paul could be the one to slay the Resurrection Beast that is Varun the Eater. With the help of two other individuals – for some reason I feel one of them would be Pyrrha – they trap Varun in a “lake” – could be the Tomb, could be the First, could be yet another metaphorical body of water – and he is the one who end the RB that allegedly killed and consumed Cassiopeia the First.
That’s the post folks, now the list of ancient Lit that I promised:
Ἀπολλωδώρου, Βιβλιοθήκης Ἐπιτομή, 3.7 /  Apollodorus, library epitome 3.7 (But he, not wishing to go to the war, feigned madness. However, Palamedes, son of Nauplius, proved his madness to be fictitious; and when Ulysses pretended to rave, Palamedes followed him, and snatching Telemachus from Penelope's bosom, drew his sword as if he would kill him. And in his fear for the child Ulysses confessed that his madness was pretended, and he went to the war)
Ὑγίνου, Μύθοι, 105/ Hyginus' fabulae 105
Παυσανίου Ελλάδος Περιήγησις,/ Pausanias' guide to Greece
Γοργίας, Υπέρ Παλαμήδους Απολογία / Gorgias Palamedes’ Defense
Ovid, Metamorphoses pp. 13.34-60, 308-312
Virgil, Aeneid pp. 2.81-85
Plato, Apology 41b
Take care of yourselves! See ya on the next one!

Writer Asks: Pavo: Where do you get inspiration from? Aquila: What do you do when you’re stuck in your writing? Leo: Do you have a favorite place to write?
The Not Yet Dead Author, @365runesofwriting
we know you know us already, but it makes us a giggle to add the little note still. (❁´▽`❁)*✲゚*
Thank you very much for the ask, Natsume!!
PROJECT ASKS
Pyxis: Are there any major themes or messages you’re writing to show?
No, not really, just writing for fun LOL
Libra: Which relationship dynamic do you enjoy writing the most?
I enjoy writing Midnight and Staticlight's relationship dynamic, it's fun with the kind and nice being paired with the evil and chaotic xD
Cassiopeia: What’s your favorite scene so far?
For Midnight and the Gift of the Melody Blade:
They heard another set of footsteps coming from in front of them and a brief muffled conversation. “Dev, would you mind telling me why the fuck we’re in a forest?”
“I’m looking for that boy with that ‘Melody Blade’ or whatever it was called, I’m curious to know about its powers!”
“But that doesn’t answer why–”
“Just play along Static, we’ll find him eventually!”
The footsteps came closer and a rustling in the bushes preceded them walking out, facing Midnight and Ambrosia straight on.
Midnight took a look at the first figure. It was unusually tall, had dark skin, had a right brown eye and an white dice-like eyepatch on the left, wore a brown t shirt with a oval hole in the top middle, had rainbow shorts below that, a pair of large black running shoes with blue at the outer edges and brown laces with gray in the middle and purple upside down crosses hung from it’s ears.
For Stars, Bits, and Bytes:
“Woah, what is that?” The taller girl named Ottava stared at the gray dot in curiosity.
“Let’s get a closer look!”
They had reached the end of the sheltering of trees above them and stepped into direct sunlight, overlooking the construction site, and now had a better view of that gray dot, which they  perceived as a spacecraft.
Lyric jumped in excitement. “We’re getting nearer! Now all we need to do is get past the construction workers.”
Ottava was confused. “How do you suppose we’re gonna do–”
Lyric bounded ahead and stealthily slipped down the rockface.
Ottava sighed. “...that.” She followed after him and eventually they approached the construction site where the spacecraft was.
WRITER ASKS
Pavo: Where do you get inspiration from?
I get my writing inspiration from games (like D&D for example!) and also music!
Aquila: What do you do when you’re stuck in your writing?
What I do when I'm stuck in my writing, is I go to another hobby (like composing music, for me) before coming back to writing with fresh eyes the next day!
Leo: Do you have a favorite place to write?
Either the living room, or the computer room are my favorite places to write!

Hi! Um you did a dice ask post (I think? I'm like 90% sure) but I wanted to ask! What dice set would you assign to a young witch who's been adopted by Bruce Wayne, she is 12, has black hair and green eyes, and cam change her appearance so sometimes she has red hair, or black hair and blue eyes, her name is Cassiopeia Wayne. She loves reading and is planning on making a magical trunk that can hold an entire apartment (with a large garden) among other things like a library trunk!
Oooh! I think I would assign her Dispel Dice's Celestial Sphere!

Original works: Battles of the Empire
As the 2017-vintage reblog may have spoiled it already, there existed a Risk-like boardgame iteration in the ‘franchise’ as it were, circa 2012-2014 timeframe when I was in the polytechnic university. Social aspects with players making and breaking alliances, funding, units with health and dice and so on and so on...
Tumblr media
A mockup of the game board. There existed a drawn first version of the portraits and everything, consigned to the paper shredder, but the placeholder Googled artwork survived.
This board game exists in a weird place as it in some ways predates the tabletop RPG and its very, very barebones backstory grew into the setting proper for the tabletop game.
Battles of the Empire is a strategic boardgame for four or more players, pitted against one another in a battle for a distant colony in different scenarios ranging from civil war to rebellion and defence against aliens. The game calls for diplomacy, tactical acumen and luck of the dice.
The backstory: Epsilon Cassiopeiae, or more familiarly Segin, is a minor agricultural world on the fringes of settled space. The system’s lone human habitable world, Segin III, was settled by the Empire in 2485, who were the dominant human polity at the time. Segin III was left to its own devices through the years, focused on growing her own people and their prosperity, as long as the Imperial grain quota was met.
Decades have passed since the world was settled and the distant Empire is in dire straits. Voices clamouring for Segin III’s independence grow, but who will deliver it to them? What about the consequences that would follow such declaration from the suzerains of the young colony? These questions will be answered by Battles of the Empire.
As for the envisioned gameplay loop, it would have been about conquering and holding territory, to gain funding, which was in turn spent on recruiting, recovering and maintaining units, which could conquer and defend territories.
Roles (Governor-general, general, admiral, air admiral etc.) defined what units one was able to recruit and some extra powers, such as air admiral being able to conduct air drops, or admiral having the navy at hand to support with artillery.
The civil war scenario would have begun with everyone at peace with one another and begging the Governor-General for funding while maneuvering into place for the civil war’s start. The scenario had also a condition of just one player being able to win, despite being a team game.
The rebellion scenario featured an Imperial punitive expedition descending from orbit, with fixed teams of defenders and attackers.
In hindsight this was a mess of a game with lot of narrative and gameplay features at odds. It sounded cool, but the game was never tested. I tried a playtest session once, in polytechnic, but no one took part and only one game designer came to jeer at me for not trying to build this into a computer game instead of tabletop.

You could feel heat rising to your cheeks from the exertion of fighting with Clay. His words were getting sharper and cutting deeper into your mind as he broke into your ranting.
The kitchen was always where the two of you hashed out your problems. Only your heirloom china and tea kettle could judge the two of you as you walked all over each other. The partially cleaned dishes soaked in murky water as you stood before the sink, that same water dripping down your arms as the two of you bickered.
The calm floral scenes hanging behind him in vintage picture frames seemed to wilt with each snide remark one of you made. The array of half-diced vegetables served as an audience to your dramatics. If they could, you knew they’d run from the loudness of your words echoing off the walls.
His irises swirled with blazoned anger and insecurities as he looked upon you. You wouldn’t dare look away from those burning eyes and let him win, despite the tears threatening to spill from his backhanded jabs. You were determined to stick out the fight longer than him, but that was never the case.
He ran his hands into his hair, tugging at the strands in frustration. “We’re going in circles. You always do this!”
You pursed your lips, your heart beginning to break in your chest. How long had the two of you been at this? “No, I don’t! Why is this bothering you so much!”
He scoffed in disbelief. “HOW IS IT NOT FUCKING BOTHERING YOU?”
You shook your hands dry, wiping them on your jeans. “Maybe because I’m not a control freak!”
He ran his tongue over his teeth. “You’re the most controlling person I know! I literally can’t do anything, at all, without feeling like I need to ask your permission!”
You huffed. “That sounds like your problem. I didn’t make that happen!”
He laughed, the sound was terrifyingly upset. He clenched his fists and shut his eyes as if trying to reign himself back together. You knew he wouldn’t get violent with you, in fact, you held your chin up a bit more. “You are just like your mother,” he hissed.
That would be the last blow; the cracking of the final whip for you. The house fell silent, the only noises were the dripping of the faucet behind you and the chirping of the crickets just outside the kitchen window. “Take it back,” you whispered, watching him with watery eyes as he turned back to the vegetables he was chopping.
“No,” he stated bluntly, venom still coursing through his voice. A gush of hot tears streamed down your face quietly, your teeth digging into your tongue to keep you from sobbing loud enough for him to hear.
You wordlessly left the kitchen, the door swinging shut behind you to seal Clay in with his thoughts. You pried the front door open and plopped down on your front steps, letting your tears finally show how mentally exhausted you were. You couldn’t remember what the two of you were even arguing about, but you knew you were already regretting some of the harsh words you’d thrown at him.
As you cried, the stars seemed to peer down at you from beneath the clouds. You’d hoped that Cassiopeia didn’t look upon you with disappointment, or Polaris’ twinkling hues weren’t a sign of discontent.
You pulled your knees closer to your chest as you settled into your spot on the steps. The wind brushed against your cheeks, wicking away some of your tears and threading its gentle fingers through your hair. The quietness of the outdoors comforted you, helping you to soothe your troubled mind.
The next few days, you could tell Clay was walking around on eggshells. Sure, you slept beside him in the same bed, ate dinner in the chair across from him, and greeted him when you came home, but that was the extent of it. You could tell by the look in his eyes that he was itching to wrap you in his arms and pour his heart out to you. Whenever the two of you fought, it always ended with basking in each other’s presence; hushed apologies and vows of love.
Especially, if one of you cried. And you knew he knew you did, even if you tried to hide it from him.
Your bag felt heavy in your arms as you unlocked the front door, kicking it shut behind you as you called out that you were home. You kicked off your shoes as you heard Clay’s footsteps on the stairs before he came into view. You sent him a weak smile as you began to shrug off your jacket, only for him to move to slip it the rest of the way down your arms.
His hand settled in yours, drawing your eyes up to his. “Hey, gorgeous,” he cooed, softly, biting his lip as he plucked up the courage to speak to you. He swallowed, his eyes dancing from your feet back up to your soft gaze.
You pulled his hand to wrap his arm around your waist before tucking yourself into his embrace, letting his familiar scent welcome you back to him. His arms moved to tighten around your shoulders, a sigh of relief easing from between his lips as he pressed his nose into the crook of your neck. “I didn’t mean it…” he whispered, a gentle grin tugging at your lips. “I’m so sorry.”
You pressed a kiss to his clothed shoulder. “I know. I’m sorry, too,” you matched his tone. “I hate fighting with you.”
His fingers moved to brush against the back of your neck soothingly, his touch tender and loving as if he’d been hungry to hold you for decades. “Me too,” he professed. “If you were anything like your mother, I would have left…” he assured, making you giggle slightly.
You pulled back slightly, pressing your lips against his in a sign of your unyielding affection. He sealed a vow of loyalty into your kiss, a promise that no matter what, you’d always end up back here.

Seokjin ⤷ He would want to do something together. The power would be out so the options would be limited, but he may pull out some of the dusty board or card games for the two of you to play.
“Don’t lie, I saw it Y/N!”
“I didn’t steal anything Jinnie.”
“You have the wrong color chips in your pile...” You looked down at the pile on your side of the table and your mouth parted, letting out a soft ‘oh’. You looked up and smiled at Jin, hoping he would ignore it. He shook his head with a smile, “You’re no better than Jimin.” You frowned playfully at him,
“At least I don’t cheat over a five dollar prize.” He looked at you with his mouth slightly open and you rolled the dice, moving your character with overly enthusiastic movements in the candle lit room.
Yoongi ⤷ The two of you would most likely end up sitting together in front of the fireplace or with candles on the surrounding tables, really just spending time together.
“You’re always so cold.”
“It’s not my fault that my body decided to maintain the wrong temperature.” Yoongi chuckled quietly at your comment, his chest shaking slightly under your head,
“I feel like it would be more efficient if we had one warm blanket instead of twenty thin ones.” You hummed gently, curling even further into his side and nestling your head into his chest, and smiled as one of his hands played idly with your hair.
Hoseok ⤷ The first thing one of you would do is light some candles, but Hoseok may end up setting up one of your phones and playing music for the two of you to dance to.
“This is nice Seok.” He hummed and you felt the rumble where your face touched his chest, eyes closed and smile ghosting your face.
“I thought you’d like it.” You opened your eyes and looked up at him, gazes meeting. His hands rested gently on your back and yours ghosted over the back of his neck, arms wrapped over his shoulders.
“I think it’s better with the candles; I can dance without kicking your shins.” Hoseok smiled at you, mouth wide and expression glowing. You smiled in return, glad that this was the evening you had.
Namjoon ⤷ He would grab everything that you needed and would drag you outside with him to look at the stars.
“That’s Cassiopeia.”
“Greek mythology?” Namjoon hummed and your face softened at the image of the boy sitting next to you; eyes gazing upwards and so incredibly full of wonder that it made your heart melt.
“She was one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer in the 2nd century.” You looked up at the constellation that glittered overhead in the inky sky and smiled from where you sat, huddled next to Namjoon under a thick blanket; you felt warmer than you had all day despite your pink nose and cheeks.

Self-care is using CAS as a high-end dollmaker to envision characters from a roleplay you’ve run with a friend for literal years. These are our characters’ five kids; the girls were born as quadruplets after we couldn’t decide if they should have multiples and let a dice roll decide lmao. Their parents are a human and an alien, so they’re a lovely batch of blueberries
From the top: Pegasus, Cassiopeia, Lyra, Electra and Maia Keene

Another Valentine’s Day~
Though he normally didn’t mind such a thing, this year was....hm, not the best. Cassiopeia was celebrating with her lover of choice, even Octavia had a little get together with someone...(and of course she got the annoying father talk of being safe, to which she had good naturedly rolled her eyes and agreed)
He on the other hand...was alone.
The streets were rowdy and loud as he strolled along, most people heading to clubs or casinos to celebrate. Even the Black Dice was packed, especially on the 5th floor where Vivienne hosted her Valentine’s Cabaret. It was always a huge money maker, but the place was much too busy for his liking, so he’d gone for a walk.
Said walk had ended him up in front of a familiar club, the Prince giving a slight click of his beak as he recalled meeting the proprietress of this place a while ago and he’d never checked the place out himself. It seemed....tame...compared to the other celebrations that were going on, so in he went.
It didn’t take him long to see a familiar figure at the bar as he shot back a whole bottle of booze with impressive speed. What caught his attention though, were the large tears that slipped down the feline’s face. He walked over and stood next to him, not saying anything for a moment before he placed a neatly folded silk handkerchief in front of him and tapped the bar, ordering a shot of Sambuca for himself.
When it came, he handed over his money and sat next to him with his shot before speaking softly. “I won’t ask if you’re alright Husker Dear....I can see that you’re not....but do know...that if you need a way out, my home is empty tonight and I wouldn’t mind the company.” He said gently, his talon tapping gently on the glass of thick anise flavored booze.

cassiopeia and aries!!
Cassiopeia - What’s your favorite scene so far?
Gosh, what a loaded question... I have a lot of attachment to Victory and Enfriator’s first legitimate encounter. It’s a big scene, and even now I’m playing with how to do it right. I really really love the part of Enfriator’s dream where Victory appears and holds her and they’re just very still and soft and bathed in light. And now that I’m thinking now, I really do like a lot of The Tower, which is the kingpin chapter of the Shit Hits The Fan portion of Bloodlines.
Aries - Share a line that you’re proud of!
Wenskerlaughs again, a deceitfully warm chuckle that spills from between his teethlike dice.
And another, because the tone is so different and I love it:
Shetwines her fingers in his hair, diamond sticks about to break and seekingsomething soft to love.
Send me a constellation!
