Champy (or Champ) is a sea monster (possible descendent of a plesiosaur) said to be found within Lake Champlain. This fresh water lake passes through New York, Vermont, and even Canada’s Quebec!

There have been a whopping 300 reported sightings following Sandra Mansi’s released 1971 Champy photograph! Champy has a celebrated day in Port Henry, New York; and is the mascot of Vermont’s minor league baseball team! It even has a proposed scientific name called “Champtanystropheus americansus”

Recently, a video published in 2005 by Dick Affolter and Pete Bodette can spot this creature. Professional forensic image specialists reviewed the tape, and said they found no signs of tampering. There was also a recording of unknown creature-based echolocation in 2003 by Fauna Communications Research Institute!

So, I fully understand why "late surviving" dinosaurs/pterosaur/marine reptiles are so implausible and how much of a misnomer the term "living fossil" is, but also:

It would be so freaking cool to find a living non-avian dinosaur in modern day and the stories about cryptids that resemble known prehistoric animals (or, at the very least, outdated depictions of them) really enchant me.

VT Magi-zoologist here, can confirm the 'sea serpent' in Lake Champlain, also known as 'Champie' is a kelpie. Actualy, the lake hosts a booming population of them, something not often found in Northern America. The best guess is it was brought over with the welsh who settled the area. Recent sightings of Champie have been on the decline however, due to rising lake temperatures, and increased boat traffic.

Ah, kelpies. Charming creatures. Don’t they drown the occasional muggle? Does no one notice?

It is a pity the muggles stupidity has threatened their home so. Are there conservation efforts? Could one donate?
