Please, if you can, take a moment to read and share this because I feel like I'm screaming underwater.
NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) stigma is rampant right now, and seems to be getting progressively worse. Everyone is using it as a buzzword in the worst ways possible, spreading misinformation and hatred against a real disorder.
I could go on a long time about how this happened, why it's factually incorrect (and what the disorder actually IS), why it's harmful, and the changes I'd like to see. But to keep this concise, I'll simply link to a few posts under the cut for further reading.
The point of this post is a plea. Please help stop the spread of stigma. Even in mental health communities, even around others with personality disorders, in neurodivergent "safe" spaces, other communities I thought people would be supportive in (e.g. trans support groups, progressive spaces in general), it keeps coming up. So I'm willing to bet that a lot of people on this site need to see this.
Because it's so hard to exist in this world.
My disorder already makes me feel as if I'm worthless and unlovable, like there's something inherently wrong and damaged about me. And it's so much harder to fight that and heal when my daily life consists of:
Laughing and spending time with my friends, doing my utmost best to connect and stay present and focused on them, trying to let my guards down and be real and believe I'm lovable- when suddenly they throw out the word "narcissist" to describe horrible people or someone they hate, or the conversation turns to how evil "people with narcissistic personality disorder" are. (Seriously, you don't know which of your friends might have NPD and feels like shit when you say those things & now knows that you'd hate them if you knew.)
Trying to look up "mental health positivity for people with npd", "mental health positivity cluster bs", only to find a) none of that, and b) more of the same old vile shit that makes me feel terrible about myself.
Having a hard time (which is constant at this point) and trying to look up resources for myself, only to again, find the same stigma. And no resources.
Not having any clue how to help myself, because even the mental health field is spitting so much vitriol at people with DISORDERS (who they're supposed to be helping!) that there's no solid research or therapy programs for people like me.
Losing close friends when they find out, despite us having had a good relationship before, and them KNOWING me and knowing that I'm not like the trending image of pwNPD. Because now they only see me through the lens of stigma and misinformation.
Hearing the same stigma come up literally wherever I go. Clubs. Meetings. Any online space. At the bus stop. At the mall. At a restaurant. At work. Buzzword of the year that everyone loooves loudly throwing around with their friends or over the phone. Feels awesome for me, makes my day so much better/s
I could go on for a long time, but I'm scared no one will read/rb this if it gets too much longer.
So please. Stop using the word "narcissist" as a synonym for "abusive".
Stop bringing up people you hate who you believe to have NPD because of a stigmatizing article full of misinformation whenever someone with actual NPD opens their mouth. (Imagine if people did that with any other disorder! "Hey, I'm autistic." "Oh... my old roommate screamed at me whenever I made noise around him, and didn't understand my needs, which seems like sensory overload and difficulty with social cues. He was definitely autistic. But as long as you're self-aware and always restraining your innate desire to be an abusive asshole, you're okay I guess, maybe." ...See how offensive and ignorant that is?)
Stop preventing healthcare for people with a disorder just because it's trendy to use us as a scapegoat.
If you got this far, thank you for reading, and please share this if you can. Further reading is under the cut.
NPD Criteria, re-written by someone who actually has NPD
Stigma in the DSM
Common perception of the DSM criteria vs how someone may actually experience them (Keep in mind that this is the way I personally experience these symptoms, and that presentation can vary a lot between individuals)
"Idk, the stigma is right though, because I've known a lot of people with NPD who are jerks, so I'm going to continue to support the blockage of treatment for this condition."
(All of these were written by me, because I didn't want to link to other folks' posts without permission, but if you want to add your own links in reblogs or replies please feel free <3)
#actuallynpd#signal boost#actuallyautistic#mental health awareness#narcissistic personality disorder#people also need to realize that mental health professionals aren't immune from bias#(it really shouldn't come as a shock that the mental health field has a longstanding pattern of misunderstanding and mistreating ppl who ar#mentally ill or otherwise ND)#the first therapist i brought up NPD to like. literally pulled out the DSM bc she could barely remember the criteria. then said that there'#no way I have it because I have low self-esteem lmaoooooo#anyway throwback to being at work and chatting with a co-worker. and the conversation turning to mental health. and him saying that#he tries to stay informed and be aware and supportive of mental health conditions & that he doesn't want to be ignorant or spread harmful#misinformation. and then i mentioned that i do a lot of research into mental health stuff and i listed a bunch of things. which included#several personality disorders. one of which was NPD.#and after listening to my whole ass list he zeroed in on the NPD and immediately started talking about how narcissists are abusive and#he knew someone who had NPD and how the person who had it had an addiction and died from the addiction in a horrible way and he#was glad he did#fun times#or when i decided to be vulnerable and talk abt my self-criticism/self-hatred bc i knew my friends also struggled w that and i wanted to#support them by sharing my own coping methods. and they both(separately!) started picking and prodding at my npd through the lens of stigma#bc i'd recently opened up to them abt having it. they recognized self-hatred as a symptom and still jumped on me for it. despite me#trying to share hurt vulnerable parts of myself to help them and connect with them.#again..... fun times

Maybe it's because I work in healthcare and I remember vividly during the worst of covid when all medical facilities were under strain, when there were no more beds, no more oxygen & patients were dying while waiting to be seen or admitted that my heart is breaking imagining what its like in the hospitals of Gaza running out of resources.
Add the fact that they are working through constant bombardment and airstrikes, treating horrific amputations and burn injuries with little to no electricity now and no anesthesia. Add the fact that the medics & doctors are seeing their own families brought in terribly injured or dead. They're getting calls while on duty that their families were killed and its suspected they were specifically targeted.
You could tell me the doorway to hell was under these hospitals/schools/mosques/churches/refugee camps and I promise it wouldn't change how I feel about this. Attacking these places filled with innocent civilians is wrong. How can people see the images and footage I'm seeing and say well, if bombing the entire Gaza Strip gets rid of Hamas then the end justifies the means? It can't! The cost of human life is too high! And that's without even accounting for the propaganda and lies in the mix.
Like many above a certain age I watched the events of 9/11 unfold and a lot of us in the global south actually mourned with the American people. And like the American people we too were swayed by the media's lies so we just silently watched the invasion into Iraq and Afghanistan only for the lies to come out years later. 20 years bombing the hell out of those countries and slaughtering the people indiscriminately and it didn't get rid of the Taliban or other terrorist groups. But I bet it helped to radicalise more to their cause.
Israel is using the same playbook and none should be surprised if the result is the same, if any Palestinian children of today become the Hamas of tomorrow after what they've suffered. I don't support Hamas but I can understand why they would continue to exist and why they might get willing support. And even if Hamas is all that the media says they are, it still wouldn't justify the collective punishment being meted out to the Palestinian people. Killing 8 times the amount of people you lost isn't justice!
I genuinely can't understand how so many can't see that. That there are people celebrating this large loss of life.
I do feel some hope that there are so many rallying behind Palestine, that many are trying to learn more and speak out and that in seeking out information about this, many of us have also learned more about other injustices like in DR Congo & Sudan. But I'm also deeply troubled by the lack of empathy I'm seeing and the cruelty being exalted. I'm angry that the so-called leaders of the free world are letting this happen.
I'm gonna keep talking and sharing what I can and I hope those of you who feel similarly do as well. Keep calling for the protection of hospitals as they work to save lives. Keep calling for a ceasefire to stop the bloodshed and so aid may be let in unhindered. Don't stay silent in the face of genocide. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

🤨
Tumblr media
so this seems very weird, especially because there is no source provided. but I've still been recovering from a cold, so I had some time on my hands and searched with Google's reverse image search feature what the source of this weird ass graphic could be
Tumblr media
I clicked through several posts that all gave 0 sources, until I finally found a lonesome twitter account that linked an instagram account
Tumblr media
deep in the comments of that instagram post, I was finally able to find a source! the graphic was based on this other graphic:
Tumblr media
so this person marked the different states based on their own criteria:
Tumblr media
for example, a state gets marked as high-risk if you can't change your birth certificate, and you're forced to out yourself when you have to show your birth certificate. and I am not from the United States, but according to what I found, you only have to show your birth certificate at occasions like getting a social security card or getting your citizenship. so like maybe five times in your life?
also, I'm sorry to talk about looks on here, but for many trans people, they won't be outed only if they show their birth certificate 😬 Erin Reed, the creator of this map, is certainly not a candidate to go stealth until they ask for a birth certificate
Tumblr media
another point of contention for Erin was states banning "80 percent" of care. that made me take notice, because I believe that every adult should be able to do with their bodies what they want and part of that can be medical transition. So I clicked on the link that Erin kindly provided, and looked at what these horrible restrictions look like
Tumblr media
okay, so these unimaginable horrors limiting trans healthcare are:
you have to sign an informed consent form
a physician has to oversee your health care
you have to see that doctor in person
the doctor can say that he doesn't think transitioning is the best option for you
What??? That's the "80 percent restriction" that the map was talking about??? wtf? like, I don't know about American healthcare, but how the fuck was it administered before? did they just give you the drugs without any doctor overseeing them?
Idk maybe I'm not seeing something here but this entire map just seems so weird to me. Like, you are allowed to go to these places. Some of the policies are certainly overdone, but they are acting as if they would be literally killed or harmed if they went into any of these States. I guess I have to agree on the "getting into prison if you use them wrong bathroom" one, because that really does seem to a bit much, but the rest? It's literally just fearmongering.

The twist that makes tradlife a phenomenon of our times is that it also includes earnest criticisms of life under capitalism. Many tradlifers are young women who hate work and celebrate arrangements where men rescue their wives from the professional realm: "When my friend's mom first started dating her husband," one viral tweet reads, "he said 'Stay with me, marry me, and you’ll never have to work again.'" Only tradition can salvage love from modern indignities and the early-morning commute. Like a trapdoor, the idea swings open to reveal a baby-pink fantasy too fragile and nostalgic to be taken in the open air. Regular people preoccupied with bills, healthcare premiums, and rising rents will find much of the tradlife lifestyle to be out of reach. That paradox is what makes it such potent social media fare: tradlife is, at bottom, perpetuated by "influencers" who know how to make others feel desirous and frustrated in equal measure. It is a menacing advertisement jingle, for a product people may not want or be certain exists.
By describing the misery of work, tradlife ennobles itself. But as an ethos it also maintains a willful stupidity about modern capitalism's historic dependence on the family, a constitutive structure of capitalism, through which property, debt, and economic interest are all consolidated (it was Milton Friedman, after all, who wrote that "the ultimate operative unit in our society is the family"). As a concept, "the family" has worked even harder than "the individual" to overshadow our ethical obligations to other people. But few have use for notions of society anymore, defined as it is by unpredictability and fear of rising crime. We want only securitized intimacy—the happy assurance of a shared mortgage.
[. . .]
On a macro and micro level, then, tradlife proffers a purportedly risk-averse solution to the political challenges that patriarchy and sexism present. It guards women from most men and from public life. Meanwhile, the ideology itself shies away from present-day discontent, further withdrawing from the world it purports to wish to change. The family has long been an exclusive realm, where people hoard both interpersonal and economic resources. Yet tradlife overlooks this contradiction of its own supposed anti-capitalism, supplanting it with the sharp and flawless grid of a pixelated image. Regardless of its nostalgic Americana, tradlife's vision owes less to Norman Rockwell than Thomas Kinkade: the glitter is cold, and the insistence on perfection almost hysterical. Rockwell, even at his most idealized, still populated his work with people and their hijinks; he was interested in the capacity of individuals to surprise each other. Meanwhile, in its videos and photos of well-lit, private spaces, tradlife makes property rather than humans its central object. As in Kinkade's paintings, the house appears as a refuge from others.
Perhaps all contemporary relationships are attended by hierarchy, and tradlife is just more honest about the power differentials of intimacy. But feminism, at its best, has always pointed to the possibility that love could one day be different. It has maintained that we do not currently know the full range of its possibilities, because love between men and women has so far only happened within a narrow patch of unjust conditions. Tradlife seeks the certainty of formulaic relationships, but it hides from its purveyors the prospect that a different kind of society may have better, different formulas, or no formulas at all. What might marriage look like without the imperative of property? How might love be lived without the dramas of jealousy, pain, and insecurity that crowd a world in which public space and dignity are never fully shared?

Tbh as a plus size cis woman I never would have been able to love and see the beauty of my body without the help of the trans community, specifically trans women.
I have struggled with my own femininity and physical self image for a long time because for plus size women, there is a standard you must often meet to be considered an "acceptable" version of plus size.
You must have small feet, a face with no blemishes, a distinct waist, little facial fat, insane makeup skills, basically be the picture perfect presentation of what society considers a "perfect woman."
All just to be taken seriously and to earn the privilege of not automatically being seen as an unhealthy and lazy burden to society.
If you have small breasts or no butt then you're seen as less desirable and less humanized compared to women with double d bra sizes or a "thicc" ass.
If you're unfortunate enough to lack in both departments ( raises hand lol ) then you're kind of considered a lost cause until you loose enough weight or get surgery or a boob job or anything to make up for how you look naturally.
And even if you do meet these standards, there will ALWAYS be people who will not take your Healthcare seriously and assume any health problem you may have must be because you're fat and will tell you to loose weight.
Oh you have ptsd from a traumatic situation? "It's because you're fat. Loose weight and you will feel better :)))))"
These standards are what many plus size cis women ( or any gender even ) must meet, but are also ones that trans people of all kinds must also meet in order to pass. The risk of harassment, assault, discrimination and hate crime goes way up if you are a plus size trans person as well.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that there's a kind of shared standard that trans people and plus size people have to meet in order to be accepted.
Many of my body dismorphia struggles as a plus size cis woman are also shared with plus size trans women specifically, like finding a plus size bra with small cups that actually fits me and looks good since most plus size bras increase cup size as band size goes up. Finding shoes I like that come in my size that are cute and made for larger feet as well. Plus Size Clothes in general cater to mainly one body type.
That is not to say that our struggles are identical or that one group has it worse off than the other! There are lots of things about being transgender that I simply can't relate to, as a cis woman. But finding solidarity in the similarities you share with a community different from your own does not automatically mean its disrespectful of the struggles that community faces.
Tldr: Trans people helped me see the beauty in transgender bodies and changed the way I felt about my own body at a crucial point in my young life. To plus size cis people: Our similarities are just as important as our differences, and we can find an incredible amount of support, love, and acceptance from the trans community.
We have to do our best to uplift trans people in the plus size and body positivity community because we owe so much to them ❤️

The dignity of the body cannot be considered inferior to that of the person as such. The Catechism of the Catholic Church expressly invites us to recognize that “the human body shares in the dignity of ‘the image of God.’”[106] Such a truth deserves to be remembered, especially when it comes to sex change, for humans are inseparably composed of both body and soul. In this, the body serves as the living context in which the interiority of the soul unfolds and manifests itself, as it does also through the network of human relationships. Constituting the person’s being, the soul and the body both participate in the dignity that characterizes every human.[107] Moreover, the body participates in that dignity as it is endowed with personal meanings, particularly in its sexed condition.[108] It is in the body that each person recognizes himself or herself as generated by others, and it is through their bodies that men and women can establish a loving relationship capable of generating other persons. Teaching about the need to respect the natural order of the human person, Pope Francis affirmed that “creation is prior to us and must be received as a gift. At the same time, we are called to protect our humanity, and this means, in the first place, accepting it and respecting it as it was created.”[109] It follows that any sex-change intervention, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception. This is not to exclude the possibility that a person with genital abnormalities that are already evident at birth or that develop later may choose to receive the assistance of healthcare professionals to resolve these abnormalities. However, in this case, such a medical procedure would not constitute a sex change in the sense intended here.

What do you do if you're highly recommended HLOC for eating disorders but for reasons both financial and personal you can't do that? I also don't have consistent access to therapy or regular healthcare either, despite having state insurance and a therapist. It's getting really scary for me but HLOC is just not something I'm capable of doing.
Hi, anon <3
That's a really hard situation to be in, and I know how overwhelming it can be to try to navigate eating disorder care and HLOC, especially when these resources aren't accessible or financially feasible. I can completely understand how scary eating disorders can get, and how challenging it can be to even get the energy to reach out for support. So definitely kudos to you for still trying to figure all this out despite all the difficulties. You deserve support and care in whatever ways make sense for you and your life right now, and I hope that you have the room to process any feelings you might be having.
Something that has been helpful for me to hold onto during my eating disorder recovery journey has been harm reduction values and frameworks. I know for me, the thought of recovery was incredibly scary, and rigid treatment frameworks didn't feel sustainable or accessible at all. Trying to make goals around doing any positive change, reminding myself that I didn't have to wake up and change everything in one day, accessing practical harm reduction tips for how to keep myself medically stable even if I wasn't ready to stop using behaviors, and setting more realistic goals around reducing frequency or severity of behaviors rather than trying to confront everything at once helped. Nalgona Positivity and Pride is an organization that has some really cool resources around eating disorders and harm reduction, and also hosts a monthly support group for POC with eating disorders. Engaging with fat liberation politics and values was also something that was super helpful for me to start undoing some of the really tangled up core beliefs and functions of my eating disorder. (I know that body image is not a relevant part of everyone's eating disorder experience, and I also can share some more specific resources for ARFID or PICA if that's a need.)
I want to really validate that it's completely okay if you don't want to go into HLOC. So often in the eating disorder treatment world, we hear a lot of really rigid statements that try to convince us that HLOC is the only option for healing. I know I felt a lot of shame in eating disorder treatment spaces for not being a "perfect" or "compliant" patient, and dealing with all the coercion when people tried to convince me to go to HLOC was so hard. So just know that it is completely understandable and justifiable that you would have reasons that you're not interested in HLOC, and your autonomy should be respected. I really do believe that there are lots of different ways healing can look like for us, and that all of us are going to be the expert on what would be the most helpful for our own situations. I know I did also feel a lot of grief that there weren't more alternative or easily accessible options, and felt a lot of anger on how alone and panicked I felt when I knew that I couldn't cope with my eating disorder anymore, but didn't want to be institutionalized either. So just really sending love and solidarity your way for whatever you're feeling and going through right now.
One resource that might be helpful is Project Heal, who provides scholarships when insurance isn't enough to cover eating disorder treatment. I don't know if you would be interested in IOP or PHP if that was made financially accessible, but Project Heal might be able to help make that happen if you do want to go down that route. I don't know if you're at all interested in virtual treatment, but I do know a couple people who have successfully just gotten scholarships from Equip eating disorder treatment when they explained their financial need. Quite a few eating disorder treatment centers will have scholarships programs that aren't advertised, and it's sometimes worth calling treatment programs and asking to see what can be done.
If any formal treatment is not an option, it might be helpful to try to make a really intentional plan about how you might want to approach this within your individual support network. Understanding why your providers are recommending a HLOC, whether it's because they think you need medical stabilization, weight restoration, being in a secure environment for behavior interruption, access to meal support five times a day, or something else, might help to focus on priorities and goals. Whether or not you agree with their interpretation of your situation, it might be helpful to sort of figure out what your more urgent priorities are right now so that you can make a plan for what your next couple weeks/months look like. I'm not sure if that's something that your therapist could help with or not, but making a plan with them or someone else from your support network might help to provide a bit of a way forward.
I know some people who have really tried to do a "treatment at home model" where with support from their friends/family/partner, they've set up a more intentional environment where they've made some specific goals, asked friends/family to provide meal support at specific times throughout the day, and done therapy/journaling/art/healing work at times throughout the day. I know that a lot of this stuff depends on what supports you do have in your life currently, and whether you can take time off work/school, or how other disabilities can play into whether things like meal prep and cooking are even accessible at all. But I know some people who've found it really helpful to try to really just set aside time to focus solely on eating disorder coping, even doing some things like copying schedules from treatment programs and doing that in their house. That might be too overwhelming or not a viable option, which is totally valid. But if you want to try to brainstorm what a plan like this might look like, definitely feel free to send another ask with some more specifics and I'm happy to try to help with some of that brainstorming.
When I was really struggling with my eating disorder before I ended up in a HLOC, what I tried to do was have some sort of eating disorder support every day of the week. I think it's so hard to heal in isolation, and a really important step can just be trying to start to create some way of accessing community. What that looked like for me was going to like four different eating disorder support groups a week through different organizations, and accessing support from a recovery coach. Recovery coaches are usually people who have gone through the process of eating disorder recovery, and a lot of people might be in school for their license as counselors or dietitians. They can provide meal support several times a week, do things like go grocery shopping with you or do challenging food exposures. It's more informal than therapy, but can provide some more of that material support. If you're interested in that, I know several providers who provide sliding-scale services and are really willing to make things accessible. I can't share their names publicly for privacy reasons, but if you send in an ask off anon or dm me I'm happy to send you their information.
I also went to support groups through FEDUP, the Eating Disorder Foundation, and ANAD. There are several different groups that happen at different times virtually throughout the week, and some are identity specific while some are open to anyone. Those can be an awesome source of peer support and people can provide really helpful feedback and advice or help you talk through specific challenges you're having.
Overall, I just want to affirm that whatever steps you are able to take to take care of yourself and engage with your eating disorder recovery are worth celebrating. This stuff can be so difficult, and even small steps you can take to try to stabilize, reach out for support, making a small goal, are all amazing accomplishments. Sending love and solidarity during this difficult time, and please feel free to reach out again with any more specific questions or even just to vent. Truly wishing you the best of luck <3
Any followers who have relevant knowledge of other resources or helpful tips, please feel free to add on.

The role he couldn’t leave behind: Eddie Redmayne and Motor Neurone Disease. A Fan Interview
Tumblr media
Now heaped with acting awards and acclaim, Eddie Redmayne is frequently asked for insight into his craft — how does he research and transform for his roles, disappear into his characters and then shed them?  But a decade ago, as he wrestled with the unique physical complexities and the gravitas of portraying an icon, Dr. Stephen Hawking, Eddie hadn’t developed a “process” or “method” on which to lean. So he took a deep breath and, with the guidance of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, he immersed himself in the cruelties of everyday life with MND.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIFs by sirredmayne)
He was connected with clinics and invited into homes of patients unable to care for themselves, struggling to communicate, breathe — like that of the unforgettable Glenn Phillips.
Tumblr media
Eddie learned the nuances of the specialized healthcare and technology that simultaneously encumbers and enables. He touched flesh and muscle, cruelly atrophied.

By every measure, the film, “The Theory of Everything,” was a success. Eddie’s career, already on the ascent, soared. But it wasn’t only the awards and new opportunities that had changed his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 2015, he eagerly became a Patron of the MND Association to help heighten awareness of its global research and support of patients and families throughout the U.K. Even before the honor and in the 8 years since then, he’s been consistent in his devotion, speaking eloquently of the ravages of the disease, making appearances at events, shivering and shuddering through two Ice Bucket Challenges, lending his image and voice to public awareness projects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His connection to the Hawking family has endured, too. Eddie wrote the foreword to Dr. Hawking’s final book, Brief Answers to the Big Questions, and at the professor’s funeral in Cambridge in 2018 read a passage about Time from Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament:
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.”
Tumblr media
Each year, for Eddie’s birthday on Jan. 6 (just two days before Dr. Hawking’s birthday, which is always noted), he now gives his blessing to a fundraising campaign organized by fans in his honor, supporting his patronage of the MND Association.
Earlier this week, reaching out to fans, Eddie agreed to share his thoughts about his commitment to the MND Association and his gratitude for fans’ efforts.
Charlotte Aguilar: 2023 marks a decade since you first began immersing yourself in the world of MND patients and carers, and you still find yourself deeply involved with helping to raise awareness of the disease. Why was this a role you couldn’t shake?
Eddie Redmayne: Firstly, a massive thank you for organising this. It means a great deal. The preparation for playing Stephen was a long one and as well as being able to spend a proper amount of time with Jane, Stephen and their wonderful family, I was also introduced to hundreds of people living with MND. It is a disease that I saw in all its detail and brutality and those people I met and their courage had a profound, lasting impact on me.
Tumblr media
CA: Of course, your relationship with Stephen Hawking received the most attention connected to The Theory of Everything, but how were you impacted by your encounters with others in the MND community? How does what you learned from people like Glenn Phillips, whom you studied and later visited with your Oscar, stay with you in how you view life?
Tumblr media
ER: Well, Glenn was just a brilliantly charismatic man — a passionate cinephile. He was also very open with me about the horrid tolls of the disease. He lived alone, and I remember visiting his house on a sweltering day. His doors were open to let in the air but covered with fly nets. I remember him being very concerned about keeping the fly nets in place. He reminded me that with MND you feel everything (of course), but there were parts of his body he was unable to move. So if a fly or a wasp landed on him he had no way of shooing it off. It was a specific but horrible detail of living with the disease, which of course I hadn’t preempted.
Tumblr media
CA: During the height of the COVID pandemic, you became involved with the MND Association on a different level, helping with creating awareness among Members of Parliament about the special needs of patients. Why was that important to you?
ER: The people who run the MNDA are brilliant, and I have long offered my support to them. During the pandemic, I was astonished to hear that people living with MNDA were not automatically placed on the ‘most vulnerable’ list here in the UK. It felt important to me to hear the discussion and witness the response from the politicians when challenged on this.
CA: There have been huge bursts of attention for MND that fade — the Ice Bucket Challenges, the popularity and acclaim for The Theory of Everything, and sadly the loss of a number of well-known MND sufferers. Why is it important to keep the disease top-of-mind with the public at all times?
ER: Of course there are many extraordinary causes out there in the world vying for the attention and compassion of the public, looking for their support. Because statistically MND affects a smaller proportion of the population than some other diseases, investment in research and finding a cure can be less forthcoming. From my personal experience, having spent time with Stephen, Glenn, and a host of families, researchers, and specialists in the field, it will always be a cause that I put my support behind.
Tumblr media
A sad postscript — a jolt of reality from June 8, 2017:

CW: This answer will be mentioning death, illness, and healthcare
Dude is scared, but he sure won’t let you know that. In the back of his mind, he’s worried before about your death, and about his death. He’s come close several times, so it’s just something he’s aware of. Not necessarily afraid of, but he’s aware he only has so many more days and he wants to treasure them.
So he has a lot to tell you if you want his thoughts about it. He knows a situation like this can be scary, and it can be disheartening, even when it goes relatively well. He doesn’t want you to spend all your time scared or upset. He’s had major problems with such in the past and he doesn’t want anyone else to go through that.
That said, if you’re doing alright, he never tries to lead you into any conversation. Really, he’s concerned about how you’re feeling, and lets you lead any heavy conversations. So if there are none, then none are had.
Going to the doctor frequently probably isn’t fun and might be stressful; Neon arranges a drive for you when he can, and either goes with you to appointments or meets you after whenever he can. He doesn’t think anything about it should be embarrassing, and he hopes some company will help! Also, he’d like to get you a little treat or gift for going through it.
If your strength or stamina for some activities are changing, that’s alright. Neon reiterates that he’s not judging you for any of this, you’re still strong of heart and he loves you.
He’s very patient if you need some extra time for anything, he’s always ready to do a task for you or carry you if you want, and if you’d like, he knows a lot of care-specialized robots in the city. He’ll even offer to try his hand at modifying some mobility aids or prosthetics for you.
Similarly, if your ability to communicate is changing, he’s willing to work with you. Maybe you need longer to form your words, or need to use images or body language instead of spoken or written words, or maybe you’d rather write than speak. He does his best to communicate with you how you prefer.
Seeing you reminds him how grateful he is that he’s still alive, and that he gets to share his time with you. Even if you think you’re not looking or acting your best lately, he still thinks you’re wonderful. He’s always been one to constantly remind you that he loves you, and tell you what he adores about you.
He makes sure he takes lots of pictures and records in his log. These are habits he already had but wasn’t super devoted to. Now that there’s the chance he’ll outlive you, though, he wants to be able to remember his time with you.
Is there anything you really want to do? He has a lot of money and connections, and he’s willing to use those to help you do anything on your bucket list. Some things he may not be able to participate in with you, but he tries to be there. He likes to see you happy, and to learn more about your interests and passions.

The Obstetric Dilemma
May 5, 2023
Ask any mother and she will tell you how intimidating birth can be. So many things can go wrong (and it hurts).
Tumblr media
This has been true for most of history. Giving birth can be a scary process. The human body was not originally designed to be walking upright, and our birthing evolution has not quite caught up with how the body has changed. Maternal mortality is a huge concern and has been historically. Maternal mortality rates average at 8 deaths per 100,000 live births in the European Union; even going as low as 3-4 per 100,000 in some countries. Other developing nations have a much higher rate. For example, in Sierra Leone, a woman is 300-400 times more likely to die than in the European Union with a rate of 1,360 deaths per 100,000. (If you’re interested in disparities in healthcare as it pertains to maternal mortality, check out this website.)
Tumblr media
Although maternal mortality rates are much lower today than they have been in the past, they are still higher than that of other primates. Scientists think that there are two main reasons why humans differ: increased infant head size due to the evolution of larger brain volume and changes in the anatomy of the female pelvis in response to bipedalism.
Obviously, as homo sapiens, we walk upright on two legs. Most other primates do not share our bipedalism. Millions of years ago, we were just like them and walked on four legs. There are several theories why homo sapiens evolved to walk on two legs instead of four, but that is a discussion for another time. We are focusing specifically on how the anatomical changes associated with bipedalism affects maternal mortality. In order to walk upright, some changes had to be made. The pelvis changed shape to allow the lower limbs, knees, and feet under the body's center of gravity. These changes allowed our ancestors to balance on one leg while moving the other to take a step. Feet evolved from being flat and good for climbing trees to having arches good for running. The skull and spine also underwent morphological changes so that the skull would sit directly on top of the spine for better balance (seen in the image below).
Tumblr media
Humans have a larger brain volume compared to other species. We also have a larger brain to body ratio. This is fantastic for learning how to use tools, agriculture, and building civilizations, but not super great when an infant’s large head must fit through a mother’s pelvis. Traditionally, primates have wide birth canals with an angle that allows for easier childbirth. As discussed above, the pelvis changed morphologically in response to walking upright. the birth canal became narrower as a result. Simultaneously, as humans evolved larger brains, they evolved larger skulls to match. Obviously, this poses an issue between smaller birth canals and larger heads and is referred to as the obstetric dilemma.
The diagram below demonstrates the differences in how a chimpanzee’s head fits through the birth canal vs a human's. As you can see, the chimpanzee’s pelvis is wider and the head passes through easier than the human’s.
Tumblr media
Changes in pelvic structure also have to do with thermal regulation of the body. People living in higher, colder latitudes have shorter, wider torsos to conserve body heat. This also changes the anatomy of their pelvis to be wider than those who live in tropical areas. Consequently, this leads to pelvic differences between ethnic groups. Mortality rates could be improved if morphological differences between these groups were taken into account.
Scientists hypothesize that there have been certain evolutionary trade-offs to compensate for this problem. Homo sapien infants are born relatively undeveloped compared to other mammals. We can see this in how long we spend with our mothers and our lack of ability to walk at birth. Potentially, this immaturity in development means that babies skulls are smaller at birth. Their skulls are also not fully formed. Everyone who has held a baby knows that you must be particularly careful with their heads since they have fontanelles, or gaps where their bones have not fused in their skull (as pictured below).
Tumblr media
Overall, the obstetric dilemma still poses a threat to mothers around the world. We do have some modern workarounds to it (like a C-section), but natural childbirth is still a concern. I was inspired to write this post after reading an article about maternal mortality. I wondered why humans have been able to reproduce so well that we now have 8 billion people on this planet. One reason we’ve stuck around this long, despite the obstetric dilemma, is that mothers who had narrow birth canals that were unsuitable for birth have already died in childbirth along with their baby, and therefore did not pass on their genes. Survival of the fittest can be brutal.

World Sleep Day :
Know Date, History, Significance, Images and Quotes
Learn why World Sleep Day is celebrated, as well as details about its significance, celebration, and images with quotes to share.
Every year on March 18, we observe World Sleep Day, a day dedicated to celebrating sleep and raising awareness about the importance of sleep in daily life. As we all know, a good night's sleep is essential for maintaining the physical and mental health of the human body. As a result, getting enough quality sleep at the right time is critical. Sleep not only helps you maintain your physical health, but it also helps you grow, especially in children and teenagers. In layman's terms, sleep helps your brain prepare for tomorrow; everything in the world, from animals to motorbikes, requires rest, so why don't you sleep?
Sleep deprivation can cause a variety of serious health issues as well as alert activities in certain parts of your brain. If you are sleep deprived, it will affect your ability to make decisions, control your emotions, think or write, and in the worst cases, it may even lead to depression, suicide, or any type of risk-taking behaviour. The effects of sleep deficiency are changing, so it is critical to educate people about sleep and the problems that can arise as a result of sleep deficiency.
The day was founded in 2008 by a group of healthcare providers and medical community members working in the field of somnology. The goal of the day was clear and simple: to promote the importance of sleep in daily life while also raising awareness about the critical issues caused by sleep deprivation.
World Sleep Day 2022: Significance and Celebration
Sleep has been linked to happiness in studies and data. Japan is first in the world in terms of worst population average bedtime. The average bedtime in Japan is 5 hours and 59 minutes, which is the lowest of all time, and this is one of the reasons why most Japanese people suffer from mental illness. On the other hand, Finland is regarded as one of the happiest countries in the world, with an average time in bed of 7 hours and 26 minutes, which is considered adequate for both physical and mental health. There could be many factors influencing mental health analysis, but the data presented above provide a detailed examination of the relationship between sleep and happiness. Not only will a good night's sleep make us happier, but it will also help us to improve our brain's ability to solve problems and think clearly. As a result, observing a day dedicated to sleep is not a big deal.
The day is celebrated in a variety of ways; as the name implies, many people simply sleep to commemorate the event, whereas many people around the world perform various activities providing mental stability and peace, such as meditation, which is regarded as a pioneer in order to achieve mental stability; you can also see a similar method to achieve good mental health in Japan, where people perform their cultural Japanese tea ceremony. Where many organisations from all over the world organise an event or campaign to promote sleep. Large-scale celebrations can also be seen on social media platforms, where users share informational images or posters based on the theme of World Sleep Day in order to raise awareness. All of these activities commemorate World Sleep Day.
Tumblr media
We are sharing a number of images and quotes that can be used to promote World Sleep Day on social media platforms in order to raise awareness about the importance of sleep. Don't prevent sleep from occurring because it not only disturbs your mind, but also the minds of others through the words you speak. As an adult, getting 7 hours of sleep at the right time is the best way to ensure your future dominance. Self-control is required for a good night's sleep, which can only be obtained through the practise of meditation. World Sleep Day Image 2022 According to studies, a person who gets enough sleep is more active and efficient than a person who gets too little sleep, so sleep more if you want to conquer the world. Sleep is a symbol of peace and relaxation that can be obtained for free, but people's greed drives them to pursue only materialistic goals around the world. Let us make a commitment to stick to a routine and get enough sleep to commemorate World Sleep Day. The body requires only natural sleep; forced sleep from alcohol or drugs does not provide mental peace.
World Sleep Day 2022: FAQ What are sleep deprivation and deficiency? Sleep deprivation and deficiency are conditions that occur when humans do not get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can be caused by a variety of factors, including a poor sleep routine, a sleep disorder, stress, and many others. How much sleep is enough? The amount of sleep required for a healthy life varies according to age. Bedtime for children aged 4 to 12 months is 12-16 hours per day, while bedtime for children aged 1 to 12 years is 8 to 13 hours per day. Teenagers should sleep 8-10 hours per day. The recommended amount of sleep for adults is 7–8 hours per day. How can I get enough sleep? A good night's sleep can be obtained in a variety of ways. The first thing that experts consider is creating a perfect daily routine that will assist you in going to bed at the appropriate time. The second recommendation is to avoid nicotine and caffeine, which are not essential for good sleep, while the third is to be physically active and to avoid heavy meals within a couple hours of bedtime. What symptoms can lack of sleep cause? Sleep deprivation can harm you in a variety of ways, including lowering or worsening your memory. It can also harm your brain by reducing attention span and causing poor or risky decision-making. where you will physically feel a lack of energy

Week 1 - Brief Breakdown
For our first class in the studio for the second semester, we began by going through the brief for our project. We are to develop a design system for an awareness campaign, in which specific outputs will be resolved to convey visual communication around a chosen campaign. throughout our project we will
locate and collate relevant data, content and research
to commence an interactive design process
to develop and produce typographic and image assets
implement a design system for final design outputs
integrate final concepts across collateral and appropriate formats (such as print, three dimensional and digital)
Our main objective is to present a design system for an awareness campaign that uses design assets, elements and formats relevant to the topic, context and audience. We are to effectively have an impact, and meaning and for it to be relatable to a Gen Z demographic in New Zealand.
Our Formative for the project is due during Week 6, on Thursday the 25th of August at 5pm. The final Summative is due in week 13 on the 27th of October at 5pm.
This brief is a little different from our previous one in semester one as it was more about reflecting inwards, whereas this brief is about looking to our community and how we can use a design system to help bring around a change. This brief is also different as we have been given some guidelines or pillars for what we chose as our awareness campaign to focus on. These are
Identity and Culture
Transport and Access
Home and Places
Environment and Heritage
After we had broken down the brief, we were asked some questions to answer and share with our table groups. These are some of the notes I had for this;
What is an Awareness campaign?
the hopes to create a change in a social, environmental or political issue that occurs within a certain location, or globally.
inform people about a current issue, a situation, a problem or an event by highlighting and drawing attention to it in such a way that the information and education provided can bring around a change.
What is its purpose?
to influence a change through education.
to contribute to change within a community, an organisation or an individual
What does/should a successful awareness campaign achieve?
it should help to influence a positive movement on the issue.
easily understood and easy to digest
Name some current awareness campaigns
Covid
Mental health
Physical healthcare eg. cancer
These are some other notes that I took during class, while we were discussing the brief and key components;
Awareness
Understanding / Empathy / Conscioussness
Disrput / Coerce / Persuade / Passion Project / Voice / Social Good
Tactic Familiarity / Shock / Disruption / Sensitivity / Humor / Irony / Exaggeration
Call to action
Change of behaviour
Campaign
A course of action to achieve a goal, typically a political or social issue.
It can promote its messages through different types of media, such as tv, radio, print, and online platforms such as web and social media. Can be implemented in other ways that digital and print.
A well-designed and executed campaign will change attitudes, opinions and behaviour.
What should a successful campaign achieve?
Increase awareness
undefined
Educate
Engage
Reach
Frequency
Measurability
Design System
set of shared and interconnected patterns that can have many different parts.
It is a good way to conceive design when a series of outputs need to be produced.
It is a collection of reusable components, guided by clear standards, that can be assembled together to build any number of applications.
eg. Colour, Patterns, Icons, Purpose, Values, Images, Fonts, Sounds, Objective, Grid Structure, Tone, Experience, Secondary marks, Primary Marks, Audience.
After our first class back, I definitely have a clearer understanding of what the brief is this semester as well as the projects will we produce. I am excited to get into the process of refining my ideas further and processing my research to provide me with a solid foundation once it comes to executing my final concepts.
