James Adomian is incomparable. A pioneer in the merger of sketch and standup. Most well known for his Bernie Sanders impression adomian’s show avoids the pitfall of over playing his best character. Instead his high energy performance is a hyper hilarious fantasy that leans towards exaggeration before malice. Adomian carries on the tradition of the frenzied indefinable showman like Kaufman and Williams but is the model for the Instagram generation. Intentioned, topical with all the blending of a 50 second contour tutorial. He has come back to @comedybarto alot and never once repeated a bit. The love he has for this venue is evident and mutual in a fresh but genuine bit about the Canadian news. There is no clear segway to this but It has to be mentioned he closed with an impression of Marc Maron that created an energy high audience that is rare for a closer. CREAM TEA AND INCEST by Benjamin Alborough Hope Theatre, 207 Upper Street, Islington To 28 April ‘the only true test of a comedy is that it makes you laugh out loud, and Cream Tea passes that one easily’ ★★★ Cream Tea and Incest is an amiable, inventive gambol through the tropes and clichés of the type of English fiction where dim young lords and their smarter servants outwit dastardly types and win through to victory. Eddie Spangler (Benjamin Alborough, the writer) and his faithful Jeffrey (Eoin McAndrew) travel to the country to help their friend Lord Wiggins (Aidan Cheng) retain his inheritance against the machinations of his evil brother Lord Biggins. Cue much shifting of identity as the four actors fill out a much larger cast with the help of a suitcase full of cardboard props and a script full of puns, wordplay and jokes both subtle and elephantine. It may be that the only true test of a comedy is that it makes you laugh out loud, and Cream Tea passes that one easily with some excellent gags and energetic character-shifting performances from its four young actors, with Edward Spence as the moustache-twirling Biggins particularly effective. That said, the absence of a coherent plot lessens the show’s impact, and probably makes it quite forgettable beyond a few key gags. There’s just too much stuffed in there for the allusions to, for example, socialism, Marxism and British imperial misdeeds to be developed fully or strike home.Which is a shame as the zest and slickness of the performances and the laugh hit rate are impressive. The show was a hit at last year’s Edinburgh Festival and is already scheduled for a return to the Fringe in August. It’s easy to conceive that on a long day seeing six or seven shows, this one would stand out as a winner. As a standalone show, though, it’s a little akin to the strawberries that go with that cream tea – tasty, thoroughly enjoyable while it lasts, but leaving you hungry for something with a bit more nutrition.
