Living by the sea is both good and bad for exactly the same reason: the world ends at the horizon. That is, the world never ends. And you always expect too much. At first, you hope everything you’re waiting for will arrive one day on a boat; then you realise nothing’s going to arrive and you’ll have to go looking for it instead. I hated my city because it was both really beautiful and really ugly, and I was somewhere in the middle. The middle was the worst place to be: hardly anyone made it out of the middle. It was where the lost causes lived: there, nobody was poor enough to resign themselves to being poor forever, so they spent their lives trying to move up in the world and liberate themselves. When all attempts failed—as they usually did—their self-awareness disappeared and that’s when all was lost. My family, for example, had no self-awareness whatsoever. They’d found ways of fleeing reality, of seeing things from a long way off, looking down on it all from their castle in the sky. And most of the time, it worked.

The girl took Lucile's hand and guided her away from the bustling station, leading her toward the back of the building. They walked along a narrow path, till they reached one of the storage sheds that housed various supplies for the station. As they approached there was a small break in the surrounding foliage, the girl deftly maneuvered through the gap, with Lucile following closely behind.
They found themselves in a secluded spot beneath the raised platform on which the station was built. It offered a hidden refuge, shielded from prying eyes. Positioning themselves behind a bush, they settled onto the soft earth, feeling the coolness seep through their skirts.
Tumblr media
The blonde girl turned to Lucile with a mischievous smile
"My brother is just dreadful at hide and seek!" she whispered gleefully. "He hasn't got a chance of finding us!"
Tumblr media
The girls shifted their weight, carefully positioning themselves on their bellies to create more space beneath the foundation. Lucile couldn't help but feel a sense of relief as she settled into their hiding spot.
Tumblr media
With a cheerful but hushed tone, Charlotte broke the silence.
"My name's Charlotte."
Tumblr media
A soft smile tugged at Lucile's lips as she looked at her new friend. In a shy and gentle voice, she replied, "I'm Lucile."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, the bustling and lively station slowly transformed into a place of dwindling silence. The departure of the grand steam train marked the end of a remarkable day filled with excitement and wonder.
Families began to bid farewell to the station, the air was now filled with the soft murmurs of conversation and the occasional sound of footsteps echoing on the wooden platform.
Tumblr media
the Harringtons remained among the few lingering souls. Helena, with a gentle but firm tone, approached Silas who had been engaged in conversation with the Coombes family earlier in the evening.
"Silas, my dear," she called, "it's time for us to make our way home. Come, fetch your sister. "
Tumblr media
Silas furrowed his brow and scratched his temple thoughtfully. He had been so engrossed in the hustle and bustle of the station that he hadn't even noticed Lucile's absence.
"Um... I'm sorry, Ma," he replied sheepishly. "I honestly didn't realize she wasn't with us. She was right behind us when we arrived."
Tumblr media
Helena let out a sigh, "Silas, remember that Lucile is younger than you. It is your responsibility to keep an eye on her. Did you see which way she went?"

New publisher Foundry Editions to launch this summer, bringing stories from the Mediterranean Basin to English readers
LAUNCHING JUNE 2024
London, Thursday 1 February 2024. The new independent publisher Foundry Editions is excited to announce its launch in Summer 2024, publishing the first three English-translation titles from their award-winning catalogue of stories from and about the Mediterranean Basin.
Tumblr media
Based in London, Foundry Editions is founded by Richard Village, a passionate linguist who speaks Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese and has always had his ears and eyes open to exciting writing in these languages. Foundry Editions’ ethos is threefold: a love for discovering and sharing new voices, a love for the Mediterranean and the people and lands that surround it, and a love of internationalism and reading across borders.
The independent publisher aims to bring to the attention of the English-speaking world literary gems written in languages from the Mediterranean Basin, with high-quality translations always produced directly from the original language.
Richard Village said, “We are on a mission to uncover authors who are new to English speakers, and to share the joy of reading their stories, which come from a part of the world that has always been a source of cultural and emotional inspiration for English-language readers.
“Foundry Editions wants to bring that writing to a wider audience. Because of the increasing acceptance of non-Anglophone cultural output as part of the mainstream and the more porous nature of national and linguistic boundaries, the need for dedicated presses who can satisfy the increasing demand for international fiction and have the courage to bring it to market, is also growing. We want to be an exemplary part of that significant cultural movement that puts quality translated fiction into the hands of readers.”
All Foundry Editions titles have been beautifully designed with a consistent branded look, created by Richard and Hélène Marchal from Murmurs Design. The striking aesthetic is inspired by iconic design and artists from the origin countries and reflects the distinctive nature of the countries and regions represented, as well as the bold and transporting quality of the writing.
Foundry Editions will be launching their catalogue from June 2024 with three titles for summer that not only showcase the quality fiction the Mediterranean Basin has to offer but offer unique social commentaries and viewpoints from the region.
Tumblr media
The first country to be spotlighted is Cyprus, in Constantia Soteriou’s inventive novel BRANDY SOUR, translated from the Greek by Lina Protopapa. Set against the backdrop of the Cypriot civil war, Soteriou cleverly uses Nicosia’s iconic Ledra Palace Hotel – built in the fifties as the first grand hotel in the region, and a symbol of the island’s modernisation – as a metaphor to explore the turbulent history of the Republic of Cyprus. Winner of the 2023 National Book Prize in Cyprus, The Guardian’s Lucy Popescu describes it as a “story that celebrates human resilience and deftly takes us through the years of the Cypriot conflict.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Foundry Editions’ second title hails from Italy, bringing Maria Grazia Calandrone’s critically and commercially acclaimed autobiographical piece, YOUR LITTLE MATTER, to English readers for the first time. Translated from the Italian by Antonella Lettieri, Calandrone explores the heartbreaking reasons why a mother might abandon a child, in turn giving voice to the impoverished, marginalised women of the Italian South. Shortlisted for the 2023 Premio Strega, Your Little Matter combines poetic and philosophical insight with forensic investigation to reflect on a real-life case which helped prompt social and legal reforms in Italy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, Foundry Editions turns its attentions to Spain with its third, atmospheric title, FAR. Written by one of the queens of Spanish noir, Rosa Ribas, and translated from the Spanish by Charlotte Coombe, Far is Ribas’ first foray away from crime fiction. Painting a truly evocative picture of post-crash Spain, Ribas’s satirical novel places her unnamed characters in an urbanisation in the middle of the nowhere, one of the many that were built in Spain, but never finished due to the country’s financial crash.
Tumblr media
Foundry Editions will be publishing one further book this year, eight books in 2025, with the ambition of eventually publishing between ten and twelve books a year, and will release further info in due course. Thoughts - Things from 2021
Tumblr media
A list of some of the books, movies, TV shows and music I’ve enjoyed this year. I recommend them all!!
[They’re not all new releases, just what I’ve got round to this year]
[I don’t read much at all, I’m trying to get better with it, so not many entries on that side]
Short Stories:
Fish Soup, By Margarita Garcia Robayo (Translated by Charlotte Coombe)
Tumblr media
A collection of two novellas and a handful of short stories from Columbian author Margarita Garcia Robayo. She writes with a sense of blunt poetry, often depicting an exhaustion/dissatisfaction with the reality of life with occasionally hallucinatory descriptions of situations and the characters’ understanding of them. Often, the characters are doomed to live painful lives, unable to come to terms with their reality, however, in the final novella, Sexual Education, our protagonist is shaken awake to the truth of her situation, but is still unable to escape. It all culminates in a despondent yet powerful depiction of how the religion and education given to the girls is warped by misogyny. Robayo has a vivid and unique style that perfectly matches her material - read it, it’s great!
Poetry Collections:
The Adoption Papers, By Jackie Kay
Tumblr media
This is a collection of poems that explore the adoption and childhood of the author, Jackie Kay, a Black girl growing up in a white family in Scotland. She approaches her story with so much empathy, telling it from the perspective of her biological and adoptive mothers as well as her childhood self. The identity crises, the guilt and the yearning all comes across in complex and affecting poetry. The best sections are the ones from her own perspective, but the format of the different views adds so much to the story and the understanding of the situation. Always good to support Scottish writing, especially when it’s this incredible.
The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde, By Audre Lorde
Tumblr media
I bought this at the start of the year, a pretty broad collection of Lorde’s work. I flick through it on random days, reading random poems, dog-earing the ones that I like. Audre Lorde is my favourite poet - I find my feelings expressed in her words, my thoughts pushed further along their train. The poems are political, personal, persuasive and peaceful. One of my many favourites:
I don’t need to be rich just able to know how it feels to get bored with anemones
With every line, the meanings contrast and flow together like water falling down steps. I love her - read anything of hers.
Novels: Conversations With Friends, By Sally Rooney
Tumblr media
One of only three books I’ve managed to read this year - this one was a breeze. I loved Normal People, her break-out novel, so I went back to read her debut. I’m not quite sure what it is about Rooney’s writing (apart from the fact I love it) that makes it so easy to read and get through. Not to say it’s shallow or doesn’t deal with anything too complex. I found this book quite intellectually challenging, as opposed to the pure emotionality of Normal People. This novel uses Rooney’s naturalistic style and pitch-perfect dialogue to paint a complex and vivid picture of the politics of a group of people, forcing you to challenge your previous assumptions and your trust of our unreliable narrator. The exploration of power dynamics within friends and lovers has given me a lot to think about in my own life, creating both anxiety and shame. Really interesting and intensely readable. If you struggle with getting through books, I think Rooney’s writing is very encouraging. Also, like Normal People, Conversations With Friends is getting a TV adaptation with the same creative team. Normal People is one of my favourite shows of all time so I am very excited for this adaptation and I think they’ve already nailed the casting - Sasha Lane is incredible.
TV Shows: Adult Material (2020)
Tumblr media
I’ve already written a post about this show (check it out here) but I’d just like to reiterate that this show is incredible and really knocked me out. With a sharp, impactful script and terrific performances, it’s a stand-out in British TV limited series.
Feel Good (2020-2021)
Tumblr media
I love Mae Martin so much. They’ve created a show that is funny, warm and emotionally ravaging. It can sometimes lose its way narratively but there are some moments that just go through me. I cried, laughed and sat and thought for a long time after it was finished. The final scene is just so god damn lovely. I really hope Mae Martin continues writing and acting - I love their stand-up, but I think scripted drama may/mae be a medium that they’re able to make some great stuff in.
I May Destroy You (2020)
Tumblr media
I was a bit late to this one, I’d seen the rave reviews but had never got round to giving it a watch. It’s excellent. The balance of comedy and devastating drama is something that I think British TV does very well (Feel Good). Michaela Cole’s writing and performance are both so charming, energetic and personable that they keep us going through some devastating subject matter that explores and penetrates a number of different subjects without letting up. One of my favourite aspect of this incredible script is the theme of introspection. Throughout the series, our protagonist, Arabella, is forced to confront her actions and her viewpoint. She looks for comfort in a hard, black-and-white morality which causes her to alienate her friends. The show kind of holds the audience’s hand, encouraging us to have a look at ourselves and accept that things are complicated and we often fail ourselves and others. It’s acceptance but not complacency. The main storyline follows Arabella’s psychological recovery following a night where she was raped. The final episode, where she finally sees the man who attacked her, is something I’m still thinking about. I don’t want to spoil it, please just watch it.
Movies:
Because I watch and love a lot of movies, I’m gonna just bullet point these. I know I’ve missed some films that I’ve loved, they slip out of my head.
Sorry We Missed You (2019) [Ken Loach’s films have so much heart within their realistically horrific subject matter - urgent and empathetic. The theme of time and how it can be bought and sold stands out]
The Suicide Squad (2021) [Lots of fun, made with excitement and care for the material. Post linked]
Dark Waters (2019) [An incredible true story, pushed forward by Mark Ruffalo’s excellent central performance. Inspiring stuff]
Delicatessen (1991) [Delightfully French. Funny, weird and an excellent tale of love and domination in a gorgeously realised world]
Cinema Paradiso (1988) [Delightfully Italian. Charming, lovely and poetic - a timeless portrait of a small community and a childhood through its engagement with its cinema. A real filmmakers film but in a good way]
Widows (2018) [A thought-provoking thriller with incredible direction and acting. Post linked]

Albums:
Specifically 2021 releases.
Juno, By Remi Wolf
Tumblr media
So so so much fun. I’ve been following her stuff for a while and it just keeps getting better. Her first full-length album is an orgy of bizarre quips, crackling guitar and visceral basslines. It’s like a hyperactive friend wanting to make fun out of everything.  An excellent, if rough, debut. Keeping an eye on her.
Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, By Little Simz
Tumblr media
Again, an artist I was always a big fan of, but reaching new heights with their latest album. Little Simz has the ability for hard-hitting braggadocio (“Keep it on the move, I'm never static/I go in the booth and show you magic/Got a hard drive full of classics”), catchy tenderness (“I just wanted you to call me, sayin', "Hey, sis, how's your day been?/How's your love life? Who you datin'?”), and intense vulnerability (“I'm not forgivin' for you, man, I'm forgivin' for me”). All her skills are put to use to examine her actions, history and her need to create art across an hour of soulful and glamorous instrumentals. The introspection throughout reminded me of I May Destroy You. I got the chance to see her perform on the tour for this album - just an incredible stage presence that elevated the songs to yet another level. Her support at that gig - Alewya - is also definitely worth a listen. Album of the year.
-
I’m going to try to challenge myself more with the kinds of art I’m engaging with in 2022, hoping to find more stuff like the works highlighted above -
any recommendations?

Nia Zuri
(( if you don't want to answer this question that's cool. who do you think she'd be good with? as a love interest)
Name: Nia Zuri Born: October 14th Age: 15 Status: Alive
Occupation: Soldier Also Known as: Twinkle Toes Species: Human Nationality: Spanish and Moor
Sexuality: Heterosexual  Gender: Female Height: 175 cm Weight: 145 lbs.
Hair Color: Dark Brown Hair Style: Used to be long but after chopping it, it is now worn in a bob style that is sometimes kept up or down. When’s in her causal wear, she has a head band on. Eye Color: Grey Skin Color: Tawny
rowan: i don't think "tawny" would be a good way to describe her skin color. as it could mean anything from a light brown to an orange-brown. for me, i immediately think of the orange-brown color which isn't a skin color seen on humans. i'm not saying she can't have tawny colored skin; i would just use a different color that is more descriptive than something that has a broad palette like the color "tawny" does.
Markings: A dog bite scar on her left shoulder blade Body: Lean with toned muscles build up from training and doing chores Clothing: Wears a navy blue long sleeve v-neck shirt under her jacket and fingerless black gloves. When she’s not in uniform, Nia wears a white long sleeve shirt with dark grey pants, and dark brown combat boots.
rowan: though the dress code for the uniforms is not officially stated, by just examining all the soldiers i can say that i don't think a dark-colored shirt would fit the criteria. the only time i've seen them wear a dark color is during the invasion of marley. so just to be safe, i would switch those shirt colors around for her uniform and casual attire.
    Affiliations:
Town/City/Village: Shiganshina, Wall Maria Regiment: Scouts Status: Alive
  Story:
Before her time, Nia’s great grandfather from her father’s side, Dafari Zuri,  led a bunch of refugees from Spain to the Wall. It was the most risky mission Dafari had ever done and it didn’t go without casualties. Originally, there was forty-five refugees and when they had finally arrived at the wall, there were only seven people left, including her great grandfather along with his wife and unborn child. They were overjoyed when they reached the wall and with the money they had left over, the seven survivors eventually settled in different districts.
rowan: with the knowledge we have now on how the walls and its people came to be, this isn't something that could have happened. but! since you submitted this before we discovered the information, i know you probably realize this now lol however, the generation gap should be bigger even if this was possible. the walls were built one hundred years ago from canon. so just a two generation gap wouldn't be enough time for her family to be existing during the current time period.
Two generations later, Nia is born to a Spanish and moor father, Obi, and an English mother, Charlotte in Shiganshina. Nia grew up without any siblings and honestly, she didn’t mind. She enjoyed being the center of attention at a young age and wouldn’t change a thing, even if sometimes it would be cool to have a best friend that’s related to you. Nia would often preach about how nothing scared her and not even titans. Her mother would chide her for that, but her father would remind her that she was still just a child with a wild imagination who did not yet understand the full fear of titans.
When she was nine, Nia was out in the market with her mother but eventually wandered off after getting bored. During her small little adventure, Nia found a scared grey Weimaraner hiding under wooden cart.
When she tried to pet him, he came out and bit into her left shoulder as a defensive attack. Nia’s short cries got a bit of attention and in the next few moments her mother was calling for her. Nia looked away from the wound with teary eyes and assured the dog that she wouldn’t hurt him. Eventually, her mother found Nia and tried to get her away from the dog, but Nia refused through the pain. Charlotte realized Nia wasn’t going to budge and decided to get a good look at the dog, only to find it was missing a leg.
rowan: to be honest, i don't really find this scenario realistic. you would think her mother would force nia to budge and get away from the dog; considering she is just a child, her mom should be able to do it no problem. also, considering the time period. i'm sure the people would be more brutal and unforgiving if a dog were to lash out like this and be aggressive. the dog would probably be killed instead of being chased off or left alone. however, i guess you could just chalk this one up to the mom being a very forgiving and compassionate person!
So with a promise of coming back for him, Charlotte took Nia back home to take care of the bite. Afterwards, Nia and her mother came back, with Charlotte bringing medic supplies. It took a while for the dog to come out from under the cart but eventually, they ended up bringing him home and taking care of him. Her father came home from work at the time and Nia excitedly told him about what had happened and even hushed over the cool scar she might have from this experience. Nia decided to name him, when questioned what name she would chose for him, Nia blurted the first word that came to mind. Poch.
As time went by, Poch and Nia were basically best friends and her only friend. Not that the kids around her were mean to her, it was just that she was content with having Poch around. But she also loved when her uncle Biron, her mother’s younger brother, would visit. She would sit and listen to his adventurous stories from being in the scouts, Nia enjoyed them so much, she even said she would want to join the scouts one day. Her mother freaked out and told her she would absolutely not join the scouts, but Biron laughed it off to soften the conversation and change the subject. Biron was the one to nickname her Twinkle Toes with how quick she was on her feet after doing a race in their backyard.
Nia didn’t have a fascination with outside the wall until she heard the story of how her great-grandfather traveled here from her great-grandmother. Nia would always ask her parents about it, but her mother would tell her not to be too curious about it. But Nia was far too stubborn to let it go and would promise she’d be a scout and always protect her family, since she is the only child, and she thought it was her job to protect them.
At twelve, she was a force to be reckoned with along with Poch at her side. She was so loud, people knew she was coming and was always outside playing. One day, she was in the market with Poch, grabbing a fresh pair of apples for lunch. She was having a conversation with Poch, well mostly her talking, until a large shadow hover over them. Nia turned around and the basket of apples fell from her hands when she saw the Colossus Titan over the wall. She was absolutely frozen in fear and when the Titan kicked a hole through the wall and the first titan emerged into the city, she ran.
rowan: if she was close enough for the shadow of the colossal titan to cover herself and poch, the both of them would soon be dead due to the explosiveness of the kick when he destroys the wall. either the debris would kill them, or they'd be blown away by the forceful winds and die/get injured that way. she probably wasn't the close, but when you describe it like that. it makes it seem like they were right there beside the wall where the colossal titan was.
In the moment, she wasn’t thinking of anything else. Just getting to safety. By then, the Titans have invaded Shiganshina and were everywhere. At one point, there was a Titan hovering over her home. Nia wanted to run up to the titan and yell at them to leave her home alone, but instead she ran past. She found a crowd of people heading to ships leaving Shiganshina and Nia wasted no time in boarding one of them. Once she stepped foot onto the boat, Poch hadn’t followed her, instead he ran back to their home.
Realization settled on Nia when she figured out her family wasn’t with her. She tried going back, but one of the soldiers stopped her, no matter how much she fought. Her house was in visible and she watched Poch run towards it, only for him to get stepped on by another titan along with her house. In a state of shock, the soldier placed a slumped Nia next to another woman who asked her politely if she could watch the young girl. None of what was happening registered to Nia. She murmurs multiple times that she didn’t protect them the rest of the way from Wall Maria.
After getting to safety along with the other refugees, Nia found herself a corner and sat alone until she burst into tears. Eventually, Nia vows never to be selfish again and applies for military training the following year.
Now, in the year 847, Nia has joined the 104th Cadet Corps.
rowan: i find it very odd for a child to think of self-preservation during such a chaotic event like this. as a child, "safety" is usually found through their parents. so their first thought is always to find their family. kind of the reason why you always hear scared children crying for their guardians. something like this makes me think of nia as an inherently selfish person, whose first thought was to save herself and not about her family. i understand that this was kind of the point, as a way to showcase her selfish-ness, but i feel like there was a different way to do this? just my thoughts!
  Personality:
As a young child, Nia was outspoken and loud and didn’t care what anyone thought of her. She was wild and didn’t like staying in the house, so often she was out on the streets much to her mother’s dismay. Growing up, she boasts about how brave she is and that nothing could scare her, including the titans. She would spout ridiculous ideas about walking up to a titan and telling it off and usually was laughed off as a child with a wild imagination. There was never a dull moment with her.
Nia can be outgoing but doesn’t bother trying to chase people around to be her friends. All she had and needed was Poch. At a slightly older age, her great-grandmother told her the story of how they traveled to the wall, and her fascination of the outside world grew and she began to become very curious which led to a lot of questions her parents had to dodge so she wouldn’t get any ideas.
After the fall of Shiganshina, Nia was guilt written after leaving her parents behind. She was selfish in her moment of terror and blamed herself for abandoning them. She vowed never to be selfish again. Now at fifteen, Nia’s personality had developed and changed slightly. She is no longer the loud and outspoken child she once was, instead, she’s aloof and mostly observes everything around her. But she had developed a quick temper and a fiery passion to succeed and not fail. There are moments where her old self shows, like when she voices her own opinions and stands up for herself and her family name, or when she does something impulsively, like attack without a plan.
rowan: i think such a shift in her personality is a bit dramatic considering she didn't really go through something that was traumatic enough to warrant it. an example would be eren, who actually saw his mother get eaten by a titan, and yet he remained the same person. he just developed a goal and an intense hatred for the titans.
also, i think it's important that she realizes sooner or later that her parents' survival had nothing to do with her. they were adults and more able-bodied than she was at the time, so even if she had gone to them first, nothing would have changed except she probably would've died too. i i say this, because i don't think even eren and mikasa blame themselves for carla's death.
so if nia blames herself, i'd say she is a bit self-centered in thinking everything has to do with her. you could probably use this way of thinking as a way to develop her character later on though. when she finally moves past it and realizes it isn't her fault, it'll be a great show a growth for her character.
Even though she’s not her old self anymore, Nia will not step down from a challenge, no matter what. Her ambition is driven by fear that she tries desperately to hide. When she is scared, she gets angry. She knows this isn’t a way to deal with fear and she hopes one day to overcome this. And she is still very curious and often questions one’s motive, which some would see as her always looking for a challenge.
  Abilities:
3DMG 7/10 Intelligence: 6/10 Martial Arts: 8/10 Agility: 9/10 Strategy: 6/10 Initiative: 3/10 – currently she doesn’t like the idea of becoming a leader but it could change in her future arc Teamwork: 4/10
Relationships:
Obi Zuri [Father] – Nia was close with her father and get’s most of her personality from him. The man was quiet the witty fellow and she enjoyed his cheesy jokes or funny stories from work. He’d always sing her a family lullaby in his native tongue that his father taught him (which is the only native tongue he knows) and gave her a doll made by him. (she lost it in the fall of Shiganshina)
Charlotte Zuri [Mother] – The two were close but Nia often found it annoying at how overprotective she was and how she practically wanted to shield her from the cruel world. But Nia did love her mother and learned took cook a little from her and always came to her instead of her father about girl things. She may known it then, but Nia knew her mother loved her and wanted to protect her from where she was now.
Biron Coombs [Uncle] – Whenever he visited, Nia was ecstatic to see him and begged him to tell her either the same stories he’s already told or new stories. Nia often found herself looking up to him and admired how brave he was to face a titan on his own a couple of times. She wanted to be brave just like them. Now she has no idea where he is, he could be dead or alive for all she knew.
Jean Kirschtein [Friend] – She had found a common ground with Jean and found herself admiring his honesty which helps when she is feeling sorry for herself. They both have a mutual understanding even though they never spoke on it, they just somehow clicked without too much effort. Often, she teases him whenever Mikasa was around and unofficially became his wing woman. Unintentionally or intentionally, Jean and Nia team up against titans and prove to make a great team.
Marco Bodt [Friend] – Somehow, he knew just what to say whenever Nia was angry or scared. He believed in her and pushed her the right amount to be the best and make her family proud of her. He helped her keep fighting and not give up on herself, he was always there to pull her to the side whenever she was ready to throw fists, he was someone Nia greatly appreciated and valued in her life.
Sasha Blouse [Friend] – Sasha was someone Nia found amusing and enjoyed having her around. She had a way of getting Nia’s mind off of dark places without even realizing it and often made Nia smile or let out a few chuckles. But beyond that, the two care a lot for each other and often team up to sneak some food into their shared room.
Eren Yeager [Frenemy] – The two rarely interact and definitely don’t get along at first. There had been times where they have scream matches which some of their fellow cadets have to break them up from. They fight a lot because in a way they are a bit similar and others have notice this except for them. Eventually, they will find some common ground whenever the situation calls for it. (in the future they may get along better due to Nia’s arc later on)
  Trivia:
From eleven years old, Nia is talented in knitting different things such as tunics, socks, scarves, and some hats.
She never knew her great-grandfather as he died of illness a few years after he arrived at the Wall
Every day she wishes Poch was at her side like before
Sometimes when she can’t sleep, Nia sings the lullaby her father sang to her quietly before falling asleep.
  Quotes:
“Maybe we’re the unfortunate ones. While Marco and the rest of them…are pretty much lucky.”
“I’m tired, do you mind letting me brood?”
rowan: thank you for submitting nia to us, and sorry for the long wait on the review. all in all though, i think nia is a pretty well thought-out character, with only a few things i didn't think added up.
however, it sounds like you a great plan for her and her future development, so i trust that everything with her now is there for a reason. so take my critiques and do with them as you wish!
to answer your question about a pairing, as she is now, i don't think anyone would work well with her. she is very much in her own world it seems, and has a lot of maturing to do. after she develops herself a bit further, i think she would be a good match up with either jean or reiner.
