It takes Charlie almost two years and a half to decide she is going to get that flowers tattooed on her shoulder and another six months for it to actually happen. The only reason it takes almost a week for Penny and Carole to notice all that colour on her white skin is that it is winter, and she is feeling "particularly cold but I'm not sick I swear princess" she always answers before kissing Carole's lips.
(But oh, when they see a pick of it and then it all? Carole takes the habit of kissing her shoulder every time she can, and Penny finds new spots around which she likes to leave bitemarks when they are having sex.)

Lipstick Stain - a Charenrole fic
On a rainy morning, Carole and Penny get woken up by a wonderful view.
Words: 1273
Waking up was her favourite part of the day, which was a strange concept for a student but there was a good reason. Before she never had anything to wake up to before, or rather wake up for.
Rain pounded on the glass. Another grey cloudy Friday. She had to get up soon, a few classes with a break for lunch and some studying before she did her hours working at the library. The idea of all that was exhausting.
"Here you go, princess,"
The chink of a china mug on her bedside table made her open her eyes. And what a wonderful sight to wake up to. Not only was there a steaming cup of tea, in one of her grandmother's mugs, her favourite, in her peripheral vision. There was also the angelic sight of her girlfriend standing almost naked, right next to her. Almost, because of the tiny yet elegant kimono style robe she had wrapped around herself.
"Aren't you gonna say thank you, princess?"
That was Penny, whose chest she was currently lying on. Soft skin, head nestled into the crook of her neck, hand tossed over her arm as she fully came to. Although the feeling of her hand in her hair wasn’t helping her wake up.
"Thank you."
"Good, manners cost nothing, you know." She said, walking over to their shared closet and pulling the curtain open. "You know what manners also get you?"
She turned over. Penny shuffled up underneath her to watch what was going on. Heat melted and pooled downwards toward her groin. She wiggled, wanting to get closer but knowing Charlie and Penny would tell her off. Although, with how hot they were when they told her off, the thought was appealing.
"A reward."
Oh yes, she loved this part.
Charlie turned her back to them. They could see her hands working to undo the knot tying the robe together when all at once, it started to drop from one shoulder, then the next. Her bare back, beauty marks and occasional spots and all, and slight side boob were exposed. Carole heard herself gasp.
"Always so surprised, princess," Charlie said, still with her back to them. "You've seen us both naked plenty of times."
"She went to an all girls Catholic school, you put anyone in a lacy push up bra with matching thong and a red lip and she's a puddle of goo," Penny said, fondling Carole’s breasts.
Charlie finally turned around and Carole couldn’t stop the groan that left her mouth. Penny ran her hand down and stroked her thigh as their eyes stayed entranced on her.
It wasn’t like she had massive boobs, Carole thought, they were round enough to fit in your hand, roll around as you kissed her. In the colder air of the bedroom, there were goosebumps on her skin, around the sensitive skin of her erect nipples. Her hips dips, stray hairs as her eyes neared her clitoris, faint tan lines from the day she forgot to wear suncream. Carole didn't want her to get dressed.
Charlie dropped to her knees. There was a look she only got when they were in situations like this, mischievous instead of cool, calm and collected, a look in her eye like she owned her, she liked the feeling it gave her. She ran her hands, short fingernails with a glossy coating, up her calves and watched her squirm.
"So what you’re saying is, we're not special." She retorted.
"No," she said. "What I'm saying is that you definitely know what you're doing."
She started laying kisses up her legs. Carole glanced, in among pleasure so good that focusing was a struggle, and expected red lipstick marks to trail where her mouth had been. Then she remembered that she didn’t have lipstick on yet, she was still getting ready, or meant to be.
"So you're immune to all this?" Another kiss. "Because if you're not attracted to me then I can show you the door."
Penny removed a hand from Carole's left breast and tilted Charlie's head up. "I didn't say that either."
"So what are you saying, then?"
"That I thought you dressed like that because you’re a self respecting woman who knows how to dress to please herself," she ran her thumb down her cheekbone and jawline. "When you're actually doing it to get pussy."
Charlie dragged herself backwards, hands tracing the sheets as she steadied herself on her feet.
"Don't get me wrong, I do dress like an upper class bitch because I never got the chance to before but I also know that my fellow sapphics go mad for a woman who knows how to pull off a baggy white shirt, high waisted jeans and sneakers," she stopped by her head. "So upper class bitch it is."
"I'm right here you know," she said, barely above a whisper so hardly accusatory.
"You're not an upper class bitch, just a bit of posh pussy that's all."
Carole liked how she could hear Penny's mouth shut with a click as Charlie kissed her forehead. Penny hand returned to cup her breasts, her long hair tickling her shoulders. A lot of the time, it felt like Charlie and Penny were only together because they both loved her, but it was times like this that reminded her they loved each other just as much as they did her.
She carried on following her with her eyes. Penny’s mouth moved from her neck down to her shoulder, hand pulling her legs apart before tickling her clitoris. A wail left her mouth.
"See?" Penny said. "Every time is like the first time with her."
"Is that a bad thing?" She whispered.
Charlie lent over and kissed her on the forehead, Carole watched how her hair and breasts drooped with gravity as she did. "No, princess, it's not."
"Where are you going?" She said, trying not to sound too desperate as she walked away but failing.
"I need to get dressed,"
"But-but-"
Carole couldn’t get the words out so gestured toward Penny and where her hands lay splayed across her body.
"Oh, princess, I know but I'm the Student Government Vice-president and I have classes to go to," she moved closer and tilted her head up by her chin. "I'd love to stay but that doesn't mean Penny's not gonna carry on."
"Only if you're a good girl, though,"
She whimpered as she watched Charlie walk over to the dresser to grab the matching bra to her panties. After strapping up the bra, without looking or turning it around, she threw on her jeans and buttoned a blouse in one go.
"But I want you here too."
Charlie always went simple with her makeup. Enough to make a difference but still quick. As she picked up her signature red lipstick, she turned around.
"Come on, Carole, be a good girl for Penny," She popped her lips after she applied the lipstick.
"Why?"
"Because we said so, that's why," Penny whispered.
"And you'll get a treat later."
"Really?"
She sat up, trying not to hit Penny’s head as she did. Charlie walked over again, her collarbones were visible under her shirt. She stroked her cheek, tracing her thumb down to her chin as she lent over.
"Yeah, now be a good girl for Penny, okay?"
She nodded and let her lay a kiss on her forehead. After Charlie kissed Penny, she went back to kissing her neck, hands getting busy as Carole watched Charlie leaving the room, eyes flickering shut as she thought of the very obvious lipstick mark that would be on her forehead.

*Idk where this was going but here, we are
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You thought it was a little weird when Pete didn’t great you with as much enthusiasm as he usually did, not even a peck on the lips; he opted for your lips instead. This adds to the festering thought you don’t want to believe and are afraid to ask him.
But the signs are there.
The calls haven’t been the same for a long time and the last few times you’ve heard a woman’s voice in the background, and she aren’t as subtle as she thinks she is.
Plus, there’s no way it’s Nick because you always know when he’s being a goof just like you know when Pete isn’t being his normal self.
Carole can tell those smiles of yours aren’t real just like how he’s not all there for you. But dammit if she doesn’t try to get you to enjoy yourself.
You stick closer to the happy couple, stealing Bradley away from him and not just because your favorite and only godson wants huggies.
Nick ventures towards the piano with baby Bradshaw in his arms.
You watch the wide smile on your friends face as Carole watches her family be… happy. You gaze wanders over towards the other end of the place, the Bradshaw boys’ voices slowly being tuned out as you stare. Your shoulders sag, your worst fears have officially come true.
No thoughts come to the surface of your mind. The irrational part of you hopes it’s just your mind is playing tricks on you but as you watch them, the rational part becomes much clearer.
You think back to the warnings everyone gave you before you officially accepted Pete’s attempts at asking you out. It’s a never-ending loop as they play on repeat.
“He can’t be tied down.”
“He’s not the kind who does relationships.”
Nick sets Bradley watching as his son runs back to his mother, wanting to make sure the boy doesn’t fall before he loses himself in the song.
A heavy sigh slips past your lips, you lean over to Carole. “Hey, Care?”
She turns, giving you her attention as the boy turns wanting to be as much a part of the conversation as he could for someone of his age. “I think I’m gonna go.”
Her smile falls. “Oh, no. Why?”
You pause, owlishly blinking while you try to come up with an answer. “I just- I remembered I had a meeting I was supposed to be a part of.”
She nods and repeats what you said in her head. “But you said-”
“People say lots of things.” You look over at Pete and the blonde woman laughing and flirting like no one's watching. “And sometimes they don’t mean it.”
She glances over at Pete, her confused expression changing to one of worry. “Please don’t go.” She would never be able to forgive herself if she just you leave, even if Pete’s done with you; she’s not. She doesn’t want you to leave and go back to your lonely apartment while she’s still here.
You shake your head, a sad chuckle slipping past your lips. “I’m not welcome here anymore.”
“Yes, you are,” Carole argues. How can you say such a thing?
You place a hand over hers. “I’ve lost the one thing that helped me…” a heavy sigh slips past your lips. “He was one of the few people who have helped me become the best me I could and now,” you sniff at the burning feeling you get in your nostrils, and you shake your head, finding it to be uncomfortable for a few seconds. “I can’t stay here anymore.” Tears begin pooling in your waterline.
“We could go out. You know Bradley and I absolutely adore you. We could make it a fun day out with the only two memorable women in his life.”
You admire her spirit as she fights to keep you here and happy. A sad chuckle slips past your sorrowful smile.
Carole purses her lips, she doesn’t want to accept that you’re going to leave, making this seem like a goodbye when it’s only going to be a temporary farewell, she’ll make sure of it but knows she can’t keep you here. She nods, accepting defeat, “okay.” She’s only saying this before she can change her mind and before the boys notice the shift of emotions in the air. The tears in her eyes don’t help either of you accept this.
“I’m gonna miss you,” says you, wanting to end this fast.
“We don’t have to stop talking.”
“I’m doing this to prevent any awkwardness for you and Nick.”
She shakes her head, griping your hand. “We don’t care. We love you. You know we do, you’re like a sister to us. You’re Bradley’s godmother for goodness’ sake.”
“I love you guys too but sometimes… love hurts us.”
“And that’s when friendships come in to help pick up the prices.”
“I don’t think that’s going to help us right now, honey.”
“Let me at least call a sitter and I’ll drive-”
“No,” you shake your head.
“You enjoy your time with Nick. You three need some family time, not trying to keep me from moping around because of my relationship ending. That doesn’t make for a fun family day.”
She grips your hand, rubbing her thumb against the back of your hand to comfort you in a subtle manner the boys won’t catch onto. “Call me when you get back, okay?”
You nod, squeezing her hand. “Always.”
-
Pete doesn’t glance over at you three when he walks over towards his pal.
-
You grab your bag and start scooting out of the booth.
Bradley hops off his mom’s lap, practically chasing after you.
You catch him before he could run into your legs.
He lifts his arms, a clear sign he wants to be picked up.
Your lips twitch, either way you’d feel bad if you didn’t lift him up and just as bad if you walked by him without saying anything. You give in, unable to resist his squishy cheeks and pouty expression. “Hey, bud.”
“You leaving?”
“I am but you, mama Carole, and Nick the Goose can visit anytime you guys want. As long as I get a call first so I can clean up and make sure I’ve got room for my favorite little guy.” You lightly poke his ribs earning giggles in return.
-
Pete glances over at you, watching as you whisper into the little boy’s ear making him giggle. He furrows his brows, wondering where you’re going but his heart won’t let him. If he truly wanted to know where you were going, he would follow you, but he knows better, knows he shouldn’t after what he's done.
He has a feeling the sad smile tugging at the corners of your lips is because of him, he didn’t try and hide the flirtation he and Charlie have going on now. He should have told you what happened, broken up with you before he could ruin one of the best relationships, he’s had in a long time, but he didn’t and now he can’t take that back.
What’s done is done.
-
You try to set Bradley down but it’s as if he knows something’s wrong, he won’t go down.
Nick begins another rendition of “Great Balls of Fire”, the song manages to lift anyone’s mood (and has become Bradley’s nighttime song when he can’t sleep).
Pete sucks it up and walks over towards you before Carole could get out of her seat. “I got him.”
You let out a deep breath, “thanks… Mav.”
He gulps, no more pet names. He oddly feels sad, not at all expecting this emotion to be the thing he feels the most right now. He hoped he would truly realize this was the end after you had gone back to your hotel and he had access to a bar, even though that’s the place where he ended your relationship with his actions and thoughts.
“You leaving already?”
You nod, “I am.”
Neither of you say anything, he doesn’t know what to say and you don’t want to say it.
“I don’t think I’ll be coming around as much.”
He stays still. “What? No, come on. You- you- you’re family. You can’t just not visit.”
“We haven’t even ended the relationship officially and it’s awkward. Besides, it’s not forever you know. We- uh- we need some time to- uh- grieve I guess.”
He gives you a look. “That sounds like an excuse.”
“I wish it was, believe me.”
“Do you have to leave now?”
“Well, I’m certainly not gonna stay here while you flirt and try to-” you glance down at a distracted Bradley. “Sleep with her again.”
His silence answers the question you didn’t want to ask. “Yeah, that right there, is all I needed to know and that’s why I’m leaving. Our relationship was going downhill, and I think we knew it, but we were so comfortable with one another that we couldn’t.”
“I’m sorry.”
A smile tugs at the corners of your lips. “Good. It's the least I could get from you.”
“Do you need a ride?”
“No,” you shake your head. “I’ll call me a cab. I’m a big girl, I can do this.”
“I don’t want our friendship to end over my-”
You stop him, “we’re gonna take some time to heal and see if we can still be friends.”
“What if we can’t?”
That’s the one question you didn’t want him to ask. “Then I… wish you nothing but the best, Pete. You're always feeling the need for speed, right?”
A chuckle escapes him, always loving it when you would use his phrase against him. “Yeah, always. You know me.”
Your tongue clicks, “yes, I do.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“I know you are.” You can tell by the way he lowers his eyes and by how tired he looks, its only him hiding his sadness because even though it was his doing that brought the relationship to an end, he does care about you. You can’t focus on that for long, you got to get out of here before he pulls you back in.
You make the semi-irrational decision pull him and Bradley in for a hug, leaning into whisper to the taller man. “You are good, Maverick. Remember that.”
He furrows his brows. “Good at what?”
“Take that however you want, that’s my parting gift for you.” You pull away from him and head over towards your favorite mustached, Hawaiian shirt wearing man, throwing your arm around his shoulders, pulling him for a side hug. “I’ll see you soon, okay?”
He pouts, “you leaving me already?”
“Afraid so back seater.”
“Oka- hey!”
“I bid you farewell, Nick the Goose.” A quiet chuckle slips past his lips.
“He shouldn’t have let you go,” he whispers. He turns his head towards you, his sunglasses low enough for you to see the serious look in his eyes. “Keep in touch.”
A tearful smile dances across your lips, you’re not quite sure what to say. “Thanks. I’ll try to. Play me out?”
“For you, doll? Always.”
You walk towards the door, listening to the familiar tune. “GOODNESS, GRACIOUS, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!” You scream as you walk out the door.
-
Your back hits the wall, you want to look back, see them all one last time but your heart has been through enough for one evening. You decide walking away is easier, not wanting to add onto it, that doesn’t stop the tears from falling though.
-
Nick and Carole didn’t say anything to Pete’s faces while the five hangout, although there was a significant change with their dynamic after that.
Then Nick died and Pete broke up with Charlotte.
Yet, there was only one person he could go to, but he never quite got there… or he did, but never knocked on the door.
Never asked to come in.
Never spoke to you that night even as he sat on the steps leading up to your apartment building.
-
And you did periodically check on him, even went as far as flying out to wherever he was stationed and asking his former enemy turned wingman, Iceman, how he was doing… that was a good conversation.
With Pete off, living his life, you decided it was time to stay with Carole and Bradley for a while. You helped take care of the two with little to almost no contact with him since it was always awkward and hard for him to talk about your mutual loss whenever you tried to bring it up, wanting him to stop his guilt trip.
Eventually you two lost contact with one another, only finding out how the other is through the grapevine.
Even when Bradley was upset with him when Pete pulled your godson’s papers, he didn’t answer your call and deleted your voicemail without listening to it.
Sometime after that, your little family becomes smaller due to the loss of Carole.
Pete didn’t stop by the funeral; he did send flowers along with a note saying how sorry he is that he couldn’t make it and he hopes the two of you are okay.
And, of course, the first time you see him is well after thirty years.
You saw him when you first walked into the bar and didn’t make your way over to him; he’s the one who stopped calling, why should you be the first to try and rekindle your friendship with him.
-
He glances around, happy to see every one of his students safe and sound, living life and enjoying themselves. His eyes land on you, eyebrows up to his forehead.
You can feel eyes on you, your gut telling you it’s him; you still search for the burning gaze and find the one and only man who always felt the need for speed.
You offer a small wave.
-
Penny looks back and forth between the two of you, putting the pieces together. “Is that her?”
“Yeah.”
“You gonna go talk to her?”
“And say what?”
“Ask her simple questions, like what she’s doing now? How’s she been? Things that make it seem like you want to talk to another human being and not a jet.”
He responds with a sarcastic laugh. “Yeah, yeah. I’m going.”
“See you tonight?”
“Tonight,” he confirms.
-
A wave of nostalgia runs through you while you watch your grown godson sing his father’s song. It still doesn’t surprise you that he never forgot it, it was practically ingrained in his brain before he could even talk. You can sense him beside you, still as awkward as ever. “How you been, Mav?”
“You stole my line.”
“Hmm, I don’t think so because you ran out of lines years ago and I’m sure you were lucky enough that Penny took pity and decided you were worthy enough to date again.”
“How’d you know?”
“My favorite and only godson is a bit of a gossip.”
He nods. “Good to know.”
You turn away from the scene and give him your attention. “How you been? You feeling better now that the missions over?”
He nods.
“I’m glad to see you’re okay.”
“I think you’re just saying that to one up me.”
You scoff through your nose. “I’ve always been able to one up you and you know it besides, I never stop caring about my friends.”
“We’re still friends?”
You roll your eyes, “We never stopped, Mav. We started out as friends and just because our relationship didn’t work out doesn’t mean that I don’t care about you because I do. Hell, I kept tabs on you just to make sure you don’t make any stupid mistakes like how you almost did when Nick died.”
You can tell that really hit him. “I’m sorry for sounding harsh but I want you to know that just because we’re not in love anymore doesn’t mean that I don’t care about you. I’m always gonna look after you and Bradley. It’s my job after all.”
He furrows his brows. “Your job?”
“Yeah, I take care of you two and you two take care of my tab.”
He rolls his eyes, “ha ha.”
“Thank you. I know I’m hilarious.”
“You haven’t changed.”
“Nope and you’d know that if you ever returned one of my many calls and texts.”
“Getting in trouble tends to ruin talking hour.”
“Oh, now who’s joking.”
You two chuckle before you bump his elbow with yours. “You picked a good one. I’m happy to know you’re doing good.”
“I’ll be there for you, you know.”
You nod. Your godson and a couple of his buddies from his squad walk over towards the two of you.
The pretty, cocky blond changes the song on the juke box.
You smile when Bradley leans against you, throwing his arm around your shoulder giving you a side hug.
The blond turns around and raises a brow at the two of you. “Bradshaw, you never told me you were dating a cougar.”
Bradley’s groans can be heard all across the bar. “For the last time. She’s NOT-”
The guy walks away, clearly proud of the rise he got out of him.
“Brad. Brad,” you call out to him. “Breath. He’s just being a punk who will get what’s coming to him.”
“But he’s saying things about you,” he whines.
A tight lip smile stretches the corners of your lips wide. “I know,” you nod. “And if he doesn’t, he’ll get what’s coming to him.”
He huffs.
“Do not use that attitude with me Bradley. Just because you’re like your father and don’t know how to act around the person you love, doesn’t mean you need to turn into a brat.”
His eyes widen and his jaw drops. “Wha- I don’t- I don’t-”
You lean into whisper, “Nick was the same way before he asked Carole out on a date. Learn from him and don’t act like a jackass.”
“But I don’t-”
“You do and you know it. He’s just as interested as you. There’s no other reason he would be acting like such a jackass. He wants your attention, that’s why he keeps looking over at you and making inappropriate remarks.”
He avoids your gaze as he asks, “you think?”
“What do you think your dad would say?”
“Goodness, gracious, great balls of fire?”
“Only because you wouldn’t listen, and he would have to take matters into his own hands. Do I need to embarrass you so you can get his attention?”
“I need another drink.” He squeezes your shoulder before heading towards the bar.
You shake your head.
“What happened to the sweet person I knew?” Pete asks.
“I met you and Goose.”
He scoffs, “we weren’t that bad.”
“Are you kidding me? I was lucky to keep my eyebrows after you dumbasses tried smoking cigarettes.”
“We were seventeen,” he argues.
“And I’m still traumatized from the thought of losing my eyebrows.”
“It would have been one.”
“Is that what you’re sticking with? You’re lucky I didn’t know you then.”
“But it’s a good story to tell at parties.”
“That’s exactly how I found out it was you two morons.”
“We were kids.”
“And, I would have made millions because I would have sued.”
The laughter dies down, the sounds of the bar chatter filling the silence.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
He shrugs. “Everything. You deserved better.”
“I know.” You knock his shoulder with yours. “But thank you for the second apology… you happy with her?”
He lowers his gaze, the summer heat finally getting to him. “I am.”
A slow, nostalgic smile graces your lips. “Good. I hoped you had nothing but the best life.”
“How’s Bob?”
You didn’t realize he knew the man with the wired glasses was your nephew. “He’s good. How’d you know?”
“He’s got your sarcasm.”
You let out a dry laugh, “ha ha. They’d be proud, you know.”
“Maybe. Only after Carole would have to drag Nick off the floor and stop him from embarrassing Bradley.”
“Unless she’d join in.”
“She wouldn’t.”
You shrug, “maybe not but you never know.”

"Jake! Lets go!" Y/n shouts into her shared apartment with her brother.
"Why do I have to come with? Couldn't I just go ahead to mom's and you can meet me there, without the chicken?" Jake groans, trudging down the stairs.
"No because Carole invited you and you already agreed." Y/n sighs, her car keys jingle as she drops her hands to her sides. "And can you please play nice with Bradley this weekend? I really don't want to drag any of y'alls bs arguments to mama's next week."
"Explain to me why were not spending Christmas on the ranch?" Jake asks, grabbing his Stetson hat from its hook.
"Cause Bradley came with us to Mama's for thanksgiving. You're the one who agreed to coming to the Bradshaw's for Christmas before heading down south for new years." Y/n's southern accent lays out stronger as she straightens her own stetson. "If we don't leave now Carole is gonna be pissed that were late. You do not want to be on her bad side."
"Ahhhhh there she is!" Carole screams running out to meet y/n and Jake outside.
"Hi Carole." Y/n laughs as her boyfriend's mom hugs her tightly.
"Jake, I'm so glad you could join us."
"Thank you for inviting me, Mrs. Bradshaw." Jake smiles, tipping his hat.
"Please, call me Carole. Well come on in, I'm just finishing up dinner, the boys should be out back."
"Carole! You didn't have to cook all of this! You would've helped if you had called me."
"Nonsense! Besides Penny came to help." Carole says, leading them into the house. "Jake, would you like a beer?" Carole asks, pouring a glass of wine for y/n, as she always does when she comes over.
"Please, if you don't mind."
"Here you are Hangman." Penny says as she sets the bottle on the counter in front of him.
"Thanks Pen."
"Hey, theres my girl!" Y/n turns around to see Bradley walking inside, his father and uncle following behind him.
"Hey darling." Y/n kisses Bradley. "Did you have fun yesterday?"
Bradley had gone golfing with his father and Maverick, their yearly day before Christmas eve tradition when everyone was around.
"I did, I missed you though." Bradley chuckles, pulling y/n into a deeper kiss only being interrupted by Jake coughing loudly.
"Look I get it, everyone is in love and stuff but I'm alone here so can we dial it back just a smidge?"
"Hey Bagman, you really think we'd leave you hanging?" Bradley laughs at his own sentence which makes Jake groan.
"Yea, why don't you go see your early Christmas present thats in the living room." Y/n smiles as Jake side eyes everyone as he walks past them.
Walking into the thoroughly decorated living room, he spots a singular box neatly wrapped under the tree. Jake cocks a brow at his sister who nods her head quickly, insisting on him opening it. Pulling off the wrapping there is nothing but a singular paper placed in the bottom on the box.
"Turn around :)"
Jake reads the paper and speaks as he turns. Standing behind him is non other than Charlotte James.
"Lottie?"
"Hey there stud." She smiles as Jake pulls her into a hug, lifting her off the ground.
"What are you doing here?"
"You seriously expected us to subject you to a house full of couples for 3 days and not bring Lottie out here for you?" Y/n chuckles.
"Besides, why wouldn't I want to spend Christmas with my favorite aviator?" Lottie laughs out as Jake pulls her into a kiss.
"Hey!" Y/n protests. "You met me first!"
"I love you too y/n/n." Lottie smiles at y/n, her arms still wrapped around Jake's neck, his around her waist.
"Oh just kiss already!" Carole cheers.
Jake laughs as he pulls Lottie back, firmly kissing her and everyone cheers.
"Alright y'all! Dinner is ready!"
"My love." Bradley bows, pulling out y/n's chair. She giggles as she sits down, placing a kiss on his cheek.
"So Lieutenant Seresin how was your test flight this morning?" Goose asks, looking towards Jake you was sat on the opposite side of Carole's seat.
"It went really well, Vice Admiral Bradshaw. I think were gonna hit our goal earlier than expected." Jake answers as Carole and Penny place the different dishes on the table.
"Hey, no work talk! This is a family holiday!" Carole states before turn around to grab the last of the food.
"I'm sorry honey." Goose apologizes. "So Y/n, how was the trip to Texas?"
"It was okay Mr. Bradshaw. Just the usual family holiday drama, but I think we still managed to have a good time. Right boys?" Bradley shakes his head in agreement but Jake stays quiet. "Jake?" Y/n looks across to her twin brother to see him staring at Lottie, who was having a conversation with Maverick. "Jacob!"
"Will you be my girlfriend?!"
Everyone freezes where they're at, Lottie slowly turning around, wide eyed at Jake.
"What?"
"I'm sorry but I couldn't hold it back anymore. I'm in love with you Lottie and I'm sorry it took me so long to say anything but I want to be with you. I don't want to keep having week long flings for the rest of our lives. So Charlotte Amelia James, will you officially be my girlfriend?"
"Yes!" Lottie shouts without any thinking. "Yes, yes yes!"
"Oh this is exciting!" Carole cheers sitting down at the table. "Goose and I are celebrating 40 years! Mav and Penny are getting married in a few months! Jake and Lottie are clearly overdue but finally together! And Bradley and y/n are still so madly in love!" She rattles off as Goose cuts the turkey. "Oh what could make this Christmas any better?!" She cheers.
"Well..." Bradley mumbles.
"Did you say something dear?"
"What? Oh nothing Mom, just clearing my throat."
"Okay," she holds a questioning look before turning to everyone else. "Lets eat!"
"Your mom's cooking is the best." Y/n sighs walking along the beach in Goose and Carole's backyard.
"Yea, its always the best part of being home." Bradley sighs, leading her along their walk.
"Darling?" Y/n pulls him to a stop, turning him to look at her. "Is everything alright?"
"Yea, I'm sorry baby, I'm just feeling a little exhausted." Bradley covers. In reality, he's just super anxious. He has everything planned out perfectly.
Carole's Christmas tradition is that stockings are the last opened in order of oldest to youngest. Perfect for Bradley, by a 5 minute difference, y/n was the youngest of everyone present since Penny's daughter Amelia ended up going to her dad's for the holidays. Buried at the bottom of y/n's stocking was a small velvet ring box, nestled inside is her grandmother's ring.
But Bradley was nervous about popping the question in front of everyone. He loves his family, and he loves her but what he wasn't sure about was if this is what she wanted too.
"Why don't we go back to the house and go to bed? From your descriptions of Christmas day, were going to need our rest." She laughs, pulling Bradley back towards the house.
"Yea... yea lets do that." He stumbles over he words, mindlessly following his girlfriend through the cool night.
"Good morning everyone!" Carole's excitement radiates through the living room where everyone sits, sleepily waiting for her. Y/n leans against the couch sitting on the floor with Bradley sitting right behind her on the couch, a cup of coffee rested in both if their hands. Jake and Lottie are cuddling on the couch next to Bradley. Pete and Penny are seated on the loveseat and Goose is perched in his recliner near the Christmas tree that is now surrounded with presents. "Merry Christmas." She kisses Goose and sits on the arm of his recliner.
"Merry Christmas, honey."
"Bradley, Jake, why don't you two hand out the presents?" Carole suggests.
"Sure mom." Bradley smiles, pressing a kiss to y/n's temple as he sets his coffee down, stepping over her to make his way to the tree.
It takes about 10 minutes for Bradley and Jake to distribute all the gifts accumulated by the 8 of them and by the looks of it, Carole went a little overboard with Jake, Lottie, Y/n and Bradley's gifts, their stacks being taller than anyone else. Y/n slides down to sit in the middle of the floor with Bradley, leaving Jake and Lottie with the couch.
"Alright kids, go for it." Carole claps as they all reach for their first gift, one at a tine reading who its from.
"Okay mine is from Penny!" Y/n smiles pulling the wrapping off to show off the y/n's favorite liquor resting inside the box. "Penny! Where did you get this?"
"I put in a special order just for you, I even have a few bottles on hand at the Hard Deck now." Penny smiles
"I love you so much right now!" Y/n sets the bottle to the side and starts tackling the mound of presents all from Carole.
"Alright. This one's from Mav." Bradley says, tearing the wrapping off he pulls out a pair of ray-ban aviator glasses the same time Y/n and Jake pull out theirs.
"No way, Mav, this is too much." Jake protests.
"Yea, Mav we can't accept these." Y/n pipes in.
"Yes you can!" Pete retorts. "Its actually from Goose, Ice, and Me. We got tired of watching y'all bust your cheep ones every other day."
"Thanks guys, I appreciate it." Bradley nods, setting them back in the box. Y/n and Jake mutter their thank you's, setting them to the side.
Lottie had opened a few gifts that y/n had helped Carole pick out. She even had a few from y/n and Bradley mixed in.
"Okay, Jake why don't you open that one." Y/n smiles. "And B that one right there is from me."
Jake opens his to find a personalized belt buckle with his call sign on it. "Holy shit y/n! How'd you know I was looking at something like this?"
"Coyote showed me. I had been freaking out trying to find you gift he decided to help me out." Y/n turns back to Bradley who opened his. Inside was a brand new watch.
"Baby..."
"Try it on! You had been complaining that yours was bugging out so I took the liberty of getting you a new one." Bradley places the clearly expensive watch on his wrist and smiles at y/n.
"I love you." He pulls y/n into kiss.
"I love you too but thats not your only surprise. Last one requires the bedroom." She whispers in his ear before pulling back to see his wide eyes.
Slowly all the presents dwindled down and Carole stood handing out the stockings.
"Alright Pete, you first."
"Wait Mav's actually the oldest here?" Jake laughs out.
"Thanks Carole." Pete grins ignoring the remarks from the younger pilots in the room.
"I guess old man was the perfect nickname." Y/n busts out laughing.
"Hey! Theres only like 16 days between me and Goose alright?" All of them laugh as he digs through the stocking, thanking Carole at the end as she hands Goose his. Stockings were always a practical gift that Carole did for everyone. Basic necessities that they would need on base or on deployments, plus a few treats so they always moved pretty quickly.
Bradley's hands were shacking as he flicked through his stocking. There were 2 people left before he would be on one knee in front of y/n, her brother, her best friend and his whole family.
"Bradley, dear are you okay?"
Shit, he thinks, mom's noticed now.
"Yea mom, I'm okay."
"You sure, darling? You want some water?" Y/n scoots over to sit directly next to him, rubbing his back.
"I'm okay, baby. Really." He musters a small smile which only slightly puts her mind at ease.
Lottie and Jake both opened theirs and it was finally time for y/n to open her's.
Bradley takes a deep breath when he sees her reach the bottom of the stocking.
"What is... Carole?" Carole just shrugs as y/n opens the small box when suddenly Bradley stands up, making her pause at the sudden movement. "Bradley?" She questions as he puts his hand out, she takes it and he pulls her up to stand.
"Y/n, baby, I love you."
"I love you too." She smiles as he takes the box from her.
"For the last year, I have gone in and out if every jewelry store in ever area I was stationed. Nothing ever seemed perfect enough to go to this perfect girl standing before me. I've been in love with you since that first day I saw you put Hangman in his place, all those years ago at the Academy and I fall more in love with you every single day." Bradley rambles out. "You are the perfect girl and you deserve the perfect ring. And when we were in Texas, the perfect ring was literally just handed to me." He pops open the box, getting down on one knee, y/n gasps at the sight of her grandmother's ring. "5 years 9 months and 8 days we've been together and I don't want that clock to stop ticking. I want to love you forever. So, y/n m/n "y/c/s" Seresin, will you marry me?"
Y/n glances over at everyone in the room. Her eyes resting on her brother, who, with tears in his eyes, nodded, giving his approval to his sister. She smiles, turning back to Bradley. "Yes. God, a million times yes!" Bradley slips the ring on her finger, standing and pulling her into a deep kiss as everyone cheers.
"I love you future Mrs. Bradshaw." He mumbles into the kiss.
"I love you Mr. Bradshaw."
Y/n paced back and forth in the small room. The last 11 months had led her to this one day. Her wedding day. The day she became Mrs. Y/n Seresin-Bradshaw. But as of right now, the pre-wedding jitters were really getting to her.
"Y/n, come on. You gotta take a deep breath." Cass says from the couch y/n's bridesmaids sat at. Cass, Lottie, Phoenix, and Amelia are all seated watching y/n's movements.
"She's gonna wear a hole in the floor." Amelia mutters.
"Lottie, where's Jake?" Cass asks.
"I don't know, I haven't see any of the boys."
"None of them?!" Y/n stops in her tracks. "You haven't see any of the boys?"
"I'm sure they're here. In fact, Amelia and I are going to make sure." Lottie comforts before dragging Amelia out of the room.
"Oh god! What if he got cold feet? What if he changed his mind?" Y/n starts pacing again. "What if he decided I wasn't what he wanted anymore?"
"Oh knock it off y/n. Rooster loves you! He's not going to leave you at the alter." Phoenix says.
"But..."
"No, no more. You need to calm down of you are going to send your self into a panic attack." Cass forces y/n to sit in a chair.
"Hey, y'all ready?" Jake questions walking in. "We gotta... holy shit." He pauses at the sight of his sister. Her white dress flowing perfectly, hair curled into the perfect half up half down hairstyle, her veil pinned delicately into her hair. "Wow sis, you look... you look amazing." He chokes out.
"Oh Jake, please don't cry. You're gonna make me cry." Y/n smiles, walking over to her brother.
"I'm sorry. I just... I can't believe you're about to get married." Jake wipes his eyes.
"He is here, right? I'm not about to walk out to a shit show."
"Oh he's out there and I'm gonna make sure someone gets Rooster crying like a baby when he sees you." Jake days making y/n laugh. "There's that smile."
"Thank you, Jake. For everything."
"Yea yea. Come on, lets get you married."
The instrumental version of "Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts echos around the open area as one by one the the wedding party walks in. Because there were no young kids in their family, they had to settle for their friends being everything. Payback and Fanboy took seriously to being ring security, Amelia the flower girl. Tyler and Lottie walk together first. Followed by Nat and Coyote. Last were the Maid of Honor and Best Man, Cass and Bob. Finally with a swell in the music Y/n appeared in Bradley's eyesight, crying at the sight of the love of his life.
Her dress flowed perfectly around her, leaving plenty to Bradley's imagination. He spots Jake's smug grin, knowing he had a bet over him crying. After what felt like an eternity to them, Jake and y/n finally reach the end of the aisle.
"Take care of her, or I'll be your worst nightmare." Jake threatens, still smiling.
"I will, man. Thank you." Bradley slaps his shoulder before turning to y/n, their hands interlocked as the officiant, who just so happened to be Maverick, speaks.
If you had asked either one what was being said, they wouldn't be able to answer. Too lost in each others eyes, only straying from each other's gaze at the sound of laughter.
"Bradley, your vows?"
"Oh right." He stumbles a but searching his pockets. "I uhh... okay, I guess I'm gonna wing it." He whispers, causing y/n to laugh. "Y/n, y/c/s, I love you. You never cease to amaze me on a daily and make me fall more in love with you everyday. You are incredible, creative, loving, fun, and one of a kind. You are probably one of the best pilots I have ever met, no offense to everyone in this room." Everyone laughs, 25% of the room being Naval Aviators as well. "You are everything I could have ever wanted in a friend, a girlfriend, and now a wife. You are everything to me and always will be."
Y/n takes a deep breath. "Bradley, darling, my Rooster. You are something else." Everyone laughs as he lets out an exasperated sigh. "You stress me out when your in the air, when he make snarky comments at my brother, and even you stand up to superior officers. But I wouldn't trade you for anything or anyone in the world. You've taught me how to be peaceful amidst my chaotic life. You've been a dream as a friend and boyfriend and I cannot wait to see what more you could possibly do for me as a husband."
"May we have the rings?" Payback brings the bands up to them and both take the opposites band. Repeating what Pete recites, they each place the band on their ring fingers.
"By the power vested in me, by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Bradley, you may now kiss the bride."
"Don't have to tell me twice." Bradley pulls y/n close by her hips and turns her into a dip, planting a firm kiss to her lips.
"I love you, Mr. Bradshaw." She mumbles into the kiss.
"I love you, Mrs. Seresin-Bradshaw." He pulls her back up, planting another kiss. "Even if you did hyphenate your name." Y/n laughs at Bradley's comeback.
"If everyone could please direct their attention to the dance floor, it is now time for the newlyweds first dance."
"Speechless" by Dan & Shay begins playing through the speakers. Y/n had slowly gotten into Bradley into country music and he had even insisted on this song for their first dance, claiming it as one of their songs. They danced together like there was no one in the room, loving every moment. When the song ended, they made their way to the head table sitting in the middle of their wedding party.
"Can I have everyone's attention please." Bradley says, standing with a microphone. "On behalf of y/n and myself, I'd like to thank everyone for joining us today. It means the world to us that so many people care about us and were able to join us in celebrating this special day. Each and every person in this room has played a special part in our relationship, whether is was as a supportive friend, parents who convinced one, mainly me, to go after the other, or banned us from dating which only drove us together." Bradley says, looking directly at Jake. "We love each and everyone if you and are so thankful you are here today."
Dinner was served shortly after and soon began the wedding party speeches.
"Hey everyone, I'm Cass, y/n's childhood best friend. I remember the day she called me about Bradley. It was her freshman year at the Academy and her words were, and I quote, 'there is this really hot junior who is like the best at everything!' She gushed about him every time we talked and you could tell from day one she was in love." Y/n's face was flushed red as she hit her face. "Well Y/n, I told you then and I 'll tell you now, he really really, likes you back. To the happy couple." She cheers as every claps.
Bob is the next up, being the best man and all. "Hey everyone, I'm Bob. I met y/n and rooster during a detachment a year and a half ago. You could tell every time they looked at each other that they were in love. Just the way their eyes brightened whenever the other walked into a room. I didn't have the please of seeing their relationship grew from the beginning but I'm glad I get to see them through the beginning of their marriage and whatever comes next for them. To Bradley and y/n."
"Alright, time for best speech everyone, so kick back, relax, and be prepared with tissues." Jake says, taking the microphone from Bob. "I am the older and better looking twin, Jake. I remember growing up y/n always talked about finding her prince charming, he'd be tall, handsome, treat her right, and love her unconditionally. I told her she was delusional, that no guy could be all 4. Well y/n, you did it, you found your prince charming and I am so happy for you." Y/n smiles, tears welling up in her eyes. "Rooster, you are many things, and I could go on and list them, but right now the only thing that matters is that you're the one for my sister and I couldn't ask for anyone better to be with my sister." He toasts to them before making his way to his table, stopping to plant a kiss on his sister's temple. "Love ya sis."
"I love you too." She smiles as a few tears escape, holding her brother in a hug.
"Alright, time for the parents dances, starting with the bride. Joining her in the dance floor will be her brother."
"Brother" by Kodaline plays as Jake leads y/n to the dance floor.
"Thank you, Jakes."
"For what?" He asks, twirling her.
"Everything." She smiles. "Being there when Dad wasn't."
"Hey, I'm always going to be there for you." Jake holds his sister close, in a hug as the song ends.
Bradley leads his mother to the dance floor. "You'll be in my Heart" from Tarzan plays as they dance. Y/n looks on from the table, smiling at the sweet moment between mother and son. She could tell Carole was singing to words to Bradley, just as she did when he was growing up.
Moments after the end if their song, y/n finds herself sat in a chair in the middle of the room. "Danger zone" booming through the speakers and Bradley comes strolling up with his aviators and his green flight suit on, all of his groomsmen and friends standing behind him, aviators on too.
Y/n laughs as Bradley tries to mimic a flight pattern, dropping to his knees in front of his wife. He smiles, pulling his aviators off to hang on the collar of his under shirt before running his hands down y/n's legs over over her dress until he reaches the hem.
He reaches under the skirt, resting his on her ankles, sliding up her legs, she he reaches her knees, he lifts the skirt over his head. His hands slide further up her legs, resting at the tip of her thighs. He plants small open moth kisses on her legs, leading to the garter. He smiles at the delicate lace, pinching the fabric between his teeth. He pulls the grater down her leg and over her foot, all of the men gathered behind Bradley cheering as he re surfaces from her dress. He stands, pulling the small fabric from his mouth, he plants kiss before turning back to his friends, launching the garter into the hair. The boys push each other around until finally someone gets a hold of it. Jake stands from the crowd, garter in hand, smiling. He looks over at Lotte who stands with y/n's bouquet in her hands, having caught it just before the garter toss. Bradley and y/n laugh as Jake's face pales, trying to shive the garter into someone else's hand.
3 years later
y/n sits on the porch swing. She gazes out on the front yard watching 2 year old Nicolas Bradley chase his nearly 1 year old twin siblings Jacob Dean and Carole Marie. She laughs as the twins scream, laughing at their older brother.
Bradley and Jake got sent out for deployment 6 months ago with no guarantee of when they will be home. So while the boys got to bod being bunked together on a boat, Lottie had taken up residence in Y/n and Bradley's guest bedroom to help y/n with the twins. Y/n pulling back from flights was overlooked for the deployment, thankfully. She stepped into an instructor role at Top Gun a month before they decided to start trying for Nick, allowing her to be home more with the kids.
"Y/n! Pizza should be here any minute!" Lottie calls through the open door.
"Alright kids! Time to come inside!" Y/n calls out, standing from the swing.
"But mama!"
"No buts! Time to get cleaned up for dinner before daddy and uncle Jake call us." That perks up Nick's attention. Nick sprints up to the door. This deployment was harder on their eldest son, who had just turned 2 right before they left, the twins only 5 months at the time. "Jace! Carrie! Come on loves!" They crawl their way up the steps of the porch, standing and slowing walking into the house. They took their first steps just over a month ago and have started babbling sentences since the deployment.
Y/n softly smiles every time the twins experience a first, making sure to record every moment and emailing them to Bradley. He's always so excited when he talks to the kids, trying to get the twins to show off their new skills live. He never says it but she can tell it pains him to miss these moments.
Hours pass and theres no word from Bradley or Jake. Its not long before its 45 minutes past the kids bed times and Nick's begging to stay up longer, hoping for the call.
"I'm sorry loves. How about I call Grandpa Goose in the morning and see if you guys can have another sleepover?" Nick perks up at the thought, sprinting to his room. Lottie and Y/n lift the sleepy twins, carrying them to their shared room. Y/n walks across the hall first, tucking Nick into bed. "Good night." She kisses his forehead head as he mumbles in his sleep.
"I'm sorry they didn't call." Lottie says, both closing the children's doors at the same time.
"Probably just didn't get service in time." Y/n brushes her anxiety off. Bradley never missed a chance to call. And the one time he does? The thoughts don't settle well in her.
True to her word, she called Goose and Carole asking them to watch a kids for the weekend, which they gladly accepted, always loving a chance to be with their grandkids.
Y/n paced the living room after the kids left. Still not a word from Bradley, or Jake. Even Goose hadn't heard from his son or Mav.
"Y/n you're going to pace a hole into the floor."
"What if something's wrong? What if something happened? If Admiral cant get answers, it can't be a good thing." Y/n says.
"I'm sure everything is fine. Can you sit down please?" Y/n sighs, sitting in the armchair to the left of the couch, Bradley's chair. Lottie tries to distract her with a movie but y/n just stares at the door, her phone clutched in her hand, and the pillow from the chair being hugged by her. It feels as if hours have passed but it's only been minutes for y/n. Her mind races over every possibility. She had been feeling off since yesterday, like her sixth sense had just been going off and she didn't like it.
Her thoughts are cut off by the doorbell ringing and she freezes, making no movement to go answer the door as Lottie pauses the movie walking over to answer the door.
"Good afternoon Miss James." Y/n hears the familiar voices but their tones keep her from running over.
"Is Lieutenant Commander Seresin-Bradshaw home?" The other voice asks, neither being the voice of her husband or brother.
"Y/n," Lottie mutters out, stepping away from the door. Y/n slowly rises, walking towards the door.
"Please confirm your identity." Mav states, following standard protocol when y/n, opens the door fully. Maverick and Phoenix stand in her doorway in their service dress uniforms.
"Lieutenant Commander Y/n Seresin-Bradshaw."
"Lieutenant Commander, this is Lieutenant Trace, and I am Captain Mitchell-"
"I know who you are, Captain." She interrupts, remaining respectful despite the circumstances. "Just say it."
"On behalf of Fleet Commander Admiral Beau Simpson and the department of the Navy, we regret to inform you that Lieutenant Commander Jacob Seresin was killed in action on the first of October 2024. The Navy extends their deepest condolences to you and your family."
Y/n doesn't move, staring blankly at Mav. She can hear Lottie's gasps at the news, knowing that her best friend is breaking down behind her but y/n couldn't move. Her brother, her twin brother, her best friend above Lottie, was gone. But she can't focus on it for long.
"And... and Brad-"
"I'm right here, baby." Bradley comes barreling through, not able to stand back anymore. He pulls y/n into a hug as she finally lets all of her emotions out. Her cries fall through like screams just as they had 4 years ago on the look out. The couple drops to the ground as y/n's knee's give out, Bradley's own injuries making it difficult to hold her up but his embrace never loosens as she cries. "It's okay baby. I'm right here. Let it all out."
They didn't move for at least 30 minutes as y/n cried. Phoenix had come in and was comforting Lottie.
Lottie. Y/n had completely spaced on her best friend. Her brother's girlfriend who was definitely hurting just as much as she was. She quickly got up, walking over to over to the couch where Phoenix had placed Lottie. Bradley had given a curious look at y/n's suddenly calm demeanor moving to sit in his chair.
"Lottie." Y/n mumbles as she sits on the coffee table in front of her. Lottie had long since stopped crying, just staring blankly at her hands in her lap.
"He's gone," is all she says. "He's really gone."
"I know."
"You know we talked about getting married. Right before he left." Y/n's eyes drop. She did know, she had the ring hidden in her desk drawer upstairs. "He said when he came home, the first thing he was doing was proposing. And now," she sniffs, the tears slowly coming back. "Now we'll never get that."
"B, what happened?" Y/n looks over at her husband. He refuses to meet her gaze. How do you tell your wife, that her brother is dead, giving up his future with the love of his life, because he was saving her husband's life?
"He uh-" Bradley feels like his head is going to explode. His entire body hurts, his injuries are aching and his head is pounding. "We were in the middle of a dog fight. I hadn't seen the incoming missile and he came from above and-" he pauses, every feeling he had been avoiding come bubbling up. "He saved my life using the last round of flares he had. He barely the second missile coming his way." Bradley get quiet the more he talks, tears welling in his eyes.
Phoenix notices and takes over. "He ejected just in time but he hit his head on the canopy."
Y/n gasps looking over at her husband. She heard the stories about Goose's accident and couldn't believe Bradley was holding up so well before, knowing that they lost Jake the way they almost lost his father 40 years ago.
"Darling..."
"Its all my fault." Bradley cracks, everything hitting him all at one.
"No, darling, its not your fault." Y/n moves over to her husband, her hands resting on either side of his face, forcing him to look at her. "You did everything you were supposed to do, so did Jake. Hell," she laughs slightly shocking everyone in the room. "For the second time in his life, Hangman didn't leave his wingman hanging." She starts laughing, dropping to her knees before Bradley. Lottie starts giggling at the thought from her seat.
"Asshole." Lottie lets out, laughing harder.
Mav had finally come inside, Bradley and Jake's bags in hand. His eyes widen at the two girls laughing uncontrollably. He shoots Phoenix a questioning look and she just shrugs, just as confused and she witnessed everything.
"Such an asshole," y/n laughs, holding onto Bradley's knees as she doubles over laughing.
"Mama! Mama! Guess wh—" y/n looks up at Bradley at the sound of her sons voice. "Daddy!"
"Hey buddy!" Bradley stands up, meeting his son halfway, lifting him with groan at the pain in his side. "Where's your brother and sister?"
"Right here." Carole chuckled, little Jacob in her arms, Goose close behind with Carrie.
"Hi mom, dad!" Bradley smiles taking Carrie from his father, giving him a big hug.
"Woah, where's this coming from?" Goose questions, hugging his only child.
"Just glad to see you, Dad." Bradley smiles softly pulling back, his attention immediately going to his daughter, making her giggle.
Carole sets Jace down who immediately runs to his mother, being the perfect little mama's boy that both of her sons became.
"Where's Uncle Jake?" Nick asks. Everyones eyes soften at his innocence. Bradley walks over kneeling down by y/n, Carrie sat in his lap, Jace joining her.
"Sweetheart, you know how we said that sometimes, when people go out to be heroes, well, sometimes things don't go as planned and we lose people we love?" Y/n asks her son. They've had the talk about people dying. The first time was when a few of y/n's friends didn't come back from her last mission. Friends that were big in Nick's life, just like Jake was.
The 2 and a half year old nods, most likely not entirely understanding what she was explaining to him. Y/n struggles to continue, wishing she wasn't having to explain this to him.
"Well buddy, your Uncle Jake was a hero. Probably the bravest your mommy and I have ever seen."
"You're a hero too daddy!" Nick laughs.
"Yea, but nothing like your uncle." Bradley chuckles softly. "Nick, your uncle saved my life, so I could come home."
"But he's coming home too right? He always comes back with you."
"Not this time buddy. No this time he's not coming home."
"Oh." Nick answers. Everyone knew he didn't quite understand, he probably wouldn't for a few years.
The day's leading up to the funeral were hell for the Bradshaw household. Cyclone had made sure to give everyone 2 weeks of leave, a week before and a week after the funeral. Y/n struggled with keeping from working, it being the only thing that kept her from crying every five minutes. The pit in her stomach hadn't gone away since the day she found out and she needed the distraction, locking herself away in her home office all day, working on all the flight patterns the other instructors would need. It kept her busy but it worried Bradley.
He could hear her frustrated sighs each day from behind her locked door. Her quiet cries from the bathroom that weren't so quiet against the stream of water from the shower. Bradley knew it was different type if loss between them. He lost a friend, a coworker, a wingman. She lost her twin, the person she would always have the closest connection with no matter how much she hated it.
Bradley's thoughts are dragged from his wife to the ring of the doorbell. Cursing under his breath because of his napping children he makes his way to the door seeing the last person he expected at his door.
"Where are my grandbabies?"

SIREN'S SONG
Alright everyone just a quick Author's note...
This is my first time ever posting a work on Tumblr so please be kind
Each chapter will be inspired by a song that I love
Pairing: Rooster x OC Captain Harper Ann "Siren" Mitchell
Warnings: Mentions of Ejection, injuries, cursing, drinking, and eventual smut 18+ only Minors DNI
This chapter is inspired by the song "Cherry Cola" by Elizabeth Gerardi... you should check her out on Spotify and youtube!
Chapter 1: Cherry Cola
Harper Mitchell sat at the end of her mother's well step mother's ( if we are being technical) bar lazily sipping on her second Dirty Shirley of the night. It felt weird to call Penny her step mother, because besides Aunt Carole, Penny was the only mother figure Harper had ever known. She and Mavrick had gotten married when Harper was 15 and Ameila was 5. Her birth mother Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood had dropped Harper off on Maverick's front porch with a heartfelt note about how while she loved her daughter, she just couldn't be a mother with her career. Harper huffed at the thought because she knew her father's job was much more dangerous then Charlie's. But, Mav did a great job raising her. Aunt Carole was there to help with girl things like when she got her first period and Maverick wanted to take her to the emergency room. Maverick taught Harper to be kind, caring, smart, hard working, determined, and a little reckless
Okay maybe he didn't teach her to be reckless she kind of learned it herself. I mean how could she not be with Iceman as a Godfather, Maverick as a dad, and Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw as her best friend. Recklessness and airplanes were all around her so it came as no surprise to anyone when Harper joined the navy and became a pilot.
She worked hard and earned her wings and was later accepted into the Top Gun program, which thanks to her dad pulling his papers (something she hated gim for doing) Harper completed the program with her best friend Rooster as her wingman. During the program she earned her Call Sign "Siren" because like the mythological creature she could easily lure her enemy in and take them out when they leadt expect it... or that's what she told people her call sign most definitely did not come from the fact that she was a great singer and blew all of her classmates away on a dare at karaoke night.
Siren and Rooster kicked ass at Top Gun and finished 1 and 2 in their class respectively. Rooster was so proud of her and she loved the fact that she could tease her dad that she graduated higher than he did.
Harper thrived in the navy traveling all over the world. She was an amazing aviatior, she had 5 confirmed kills, making her an Ace just like her father the newly promoted Admiral Pete Mitchell, and she herself had just been promoted to Captain. Harper sighed again looking at the cherry Bob in her drink.
"Whats on your mind kid?" Penny asked snapping her out of her thoughts. "Nothing much momma P, just thinking about the last 2 years" Harper replied. The last 2 years had been a whirlwind for her. She was flying a covert mission ans was heading home when everything went wrong. Overwatch missing a Fifth Gen fighter which came in hot for Siren when she was trying to return to base, one dogfightand a shot down F-18 later, Harper was ejecting over rugged terrain. Unfortunately when she ejected, her parachute partially failed causing her to hit the ground, the trees, and the rocks hard. She was left bleeding and broken on the side of a mountain until rescue found her. 2 surgeries and some PT later, she was cleared to fly again, but she didn't want it
Instead her Godfather and dad politely ( bullied) the navy into letter her have an instructor's position along side her dad at Top Gun. So Harper packed her things, bought a house and move to Fightertown 7 months after he accident. An accident that she never told Rooster about because she knew he would freak out. Instead she told him how excited she was to move back to North Island on one of their weekly FaceTime calls. That had been almost 2 years ago and now she had settled in well. She commanded respect from her students and they learned very early on that she was the queen of the skies. She loved sharing her stories with Bradley and he told her about his missions too. They always kept in touch with each other. Though it had been 3 years since they had seen each other face to face when they were stationed together in Wilmington, NC... they never went more than a few weeks without speaking.
Harper Downes the last of her drink when she was about to ask Penny for another but her mom had a worried look on her face... "Whats up momma P?" Harper asked. "The singer for my band tonight didn't show up and I was really wondering if my amazing daughter would lend her vocals for the night?" Penny questioned raising an eye brow. Harper sighed. "Ugh fine but only because I love you P"
"Thank you so much H, drinks on the house tonight" the older woman winked ar her " Penny, my drinks are always on the house, you're my mom and the owner" Harper through her head back laughing and slipped her aviators on and checked her reflection in the mirror behind the bar, she swiped a fresh coat of Russian Red lipstick over her lips and walked up to the stage.
After a brief chat with the band, they came up with 4 songs they new that Harper felt comfortable singing... she also pulled up a fifth on on her phone that she would need for a backup track for the last song she wanted to sing because they band didn't know it.
Penny came up and gave her a quick introduction and after a few cheers the band played and Siren came alive on the stage. Whether is was flying, singing, or anything else Siren gave her whole heart to it.
After 3 songs Harper had the bar in the palm of her hand. By the fourth everyone was cheering for her
"Alright everyone I have one more song for you. It is a favorite of mine by and artist named Elizabeth Gerardi. I don't know if you have heard it before but I just have to sing it for you!" Harper cued up the song on her phone and began to belt out the first words
While she was singing a tall, tanned, mustached man in a Hawiian shirt and aviators walked into the Hard Deck. He walked up to the bar and watch the woman on stage.
The way she sang without a care in world made his heart beat double time in his chest. He was memorized by the way her hips swayed, the way she tossed her dark blonde hair, and the song that poured from her red lips.
"Jesus Penny, who that little song bird up there on stage?" Rooster questioned. "Really Bradshaw?" Penny jabbed back in disbelief " You'd think you would recognize her after growing up together!" Penny could see the gears turning in Bradley's head as he processed what she said. "That's Siren?!" He half questioned half exclaimed. "Sure is Rooster... the singer for the band I hired didn't show up, so, she stepped in... she's changed a lot in three years hasn't she?" Penny then gave a nod to Rooster and went to help some other patrons at the end of the bar.
Harper finished the last chorus of her song and the bar erupted in a round of applause and chants of "Siren, Siren, Siren" as she looked around the bar she spotted a familiar tanned man in a pair of aviators. Before she left the stage Harper teased " Remember if you like what you hear, buy the band a beer because my mom owns the place and I drink for free!" She laughed and walked off the stage.
"She sure has changed a lot in three years" the pilot thought as he continued to watch his best friend on the stage. As she continued there were two things on Bradley Bradshaw's mind: 1.) he was sure as hell glad he had been called back to Top Gun, and 2.) He was undoubtedly, irrevocably in love with his best friend. Shit
Before he could process a strong pair of arms wrapped around his chest and a sqeaul of his name snapped him out of his trance.
Startled, Rooster shook his head and looked down to see that Harper had left the stage and wrapped him in a bear hug. Rooster laughed and hugged her back.
"Bradley Bradshaw" Harper began as she slid into a bar stool, "How dare you come back here and not tell me! I'm hurt" Harper teased as she put a hand to her chest
"I wanted to surprise you!" Rooster jabbed back, but I have to saw y was surprised to see you on that stage. I didn't recognize you with the hair cut, and it's darker, and the red lipstick... I gotta say it looks good on you kid." Rooster told his friend. "You are barely three years older than me Bradley, plus I am my own house, and mt own car...you can't call me kid anymore!" Harper joked back. "You bought a house?" Roosters eyebrow cocked up as he looked at her perplexed. "Yeah about six months ago a place about 10 minutes from here came up for sale for super cheap. The couple wqs retiring and wanted to move closer to their kids and grand kids. The basically gave it away. It's 4 bedrooms 3 baths and has a pool! I used all the money I saved plus what Charlie left me after she died and I was able to buy it out right. It's mine for real!" Harper gushed.
"Wow, that's amazing... look at you go Si" Rooster congratulated his friend. "You should come see it!" Harper said excitedly. "Yeah I can come by after training one day. I've been called back for a mission... I think the whole Dagger Squad has been... you wouldn't happen to know anything about that would you Captain Mitchell?" Rooster pried.
"Listen Roos, all I know is that a certain Admrial and Captain/ Father and Daughter duo may be teaching the Dagger Squad, but that's all I know for sure." Harper stated to him. "So you and Mav are going to be teaching.. ugh I am so dead" he rolled his eyes
"I thought you are dad were good after everything?" Harper quirked her brows. "We are, but it still doesn't mean you aren't going to hand us our asses up in the sky" Rooster laughed. "True, they don't call me queen of the sky's for nothing!" Harper sing songed back to him.
"Hey BB," Harpee began using the nickname she game him when they were kids. "Yes HM?" Rooster quipped back. "Did you drive here? I rode with Momma P and I don't want to be here until closing... can you take me home? And you can see my house before next week?" Harper gave Rooster the puppy dog eyes she knew he couldn't say no to.
"Ugh fine I guess I can... but it's going to cost you" Rooster sighed out. "Omg yes thank you Bradley!" Harper squealed and hugged him again. "Momma P, Rooster is taking me home. See you later! Love you!" Harper called as she blew Penny a kiss over her shoulder while she grabbed Roosters hand and led him to the door. Penny shook her head as Rooster waved goodbye to her. She sighed and wiped down the bar. She saw the look the sandy haired pilot had on his face when he first came in. He had it bad for her daughter and Penny knew Harper would be the death of him.
Harper walked out of the Hard Deck towards a familiar blue Bronco. "You still have it?" She asked her friend. "Of course I do." Rooster replied opening the passenger door for her and she hopped in while he jogged to the drivers side. "I could never get rid of this thing.... to many memories." He winked at her while looking at the back seat.
Harper blushed knowing exactly what he was talking about. When Harper found out her father had Bradley's papers pulled she was furious with him. She had never truly been angry with him in her 18 years of life until that moment. She and Mav fought, and screamed at each other. It ended with her storming up to her room, locking the door blaring music and sneaking out her window. She called Bradley and had her come pick her up. Even though Bradley was three years older than her, they were always close. Bradley picked her up and they drove to their spot on the beach. They talk, laughed, cried, and planned on how they were going to join the Navy together. Then out of nowhere, Bradley kissed her. The next thing they know, they ended up naked in the back seat of the Bronco. Harper shyly confessed once they were done that it was her first time. To her surprise Bradley told her the same. They both agreed not to let it change their friendship. Bradley took her back home that night. And many years later she and Rooster had both forgiven Maverick for his actions because they understood why he did what he did. They never told him about that night
"Hello... earth to Siren" Bradley waved his hands infront of her face. "Which way?" He gestured to rhe junction they were at. "Um left here and then fought house on the right" Harper stuttered out. Minutes later Rooster pulled into her driveway. Harper walked up and unlocked to door and ushered him into the foyer.
"Nice place" Rooster crooned looking around at the decor and photos. There were pictures of Mav, Penny, Amelia, Harper and even a few of Rooster, Goose and Carole adorning the walls and shelves. "Thanks. I really like it. Hopefully if I don't scare them away you and the Dagger Squad can hang out here some." Harper told him ask she continued to show him around. "Oh yeah they totally will especially for a chance to get off base and you have a pool. There is going to be a huge party here at least once I can feel it." Rooster agreed with her
They settled onto a couch in comfortable conversations. The pilots nursed beers that Harper had gotten from the fridge and the talked about everything. Harper told Rooster about her breakup from some Marine 4 months ago and he told her about some of his adventures abroad. "So a Marine huh? I thought they only liked crayons" Rooster chuckled taking a swig of hid beer. "Ha ha very funny and yes... don't remind me. It wasn't the best decision on my part." Harper laughed back. "You seeing anyone?" She questioned finishing here beer. "Nope, haven't found a girl who can put up with me for more than a couple weeks." Rooster stated back honestly.
A silence settled back over them. Rooster checked his phone. "Shit.... its 1am" he cursed. "Great guess I'm sleeping in my car tonight" he hung his head. "Ugh I forgot about that stupid curfew rule if you stay on base." Harper groaned.
"Hey um Roos I have an idea.... if you're up for it..." Harper fiddled with her beer bottle. "I'm all ears" Bradley responded. Listen don't take this the wrong way, but I have 3 extra bedrooms, with king sized beds in them and I know you don't fit well on those damn Navy issued twins... what if you just I don't know, stayed here with me? I mean om close to base, you would have you own bathroom and I have a pool... I mean if you want?!" Harper rambled. She held her breath waiting for him yo respond. Deep down she wanted him to say yes because even though she would never admit it, Harper was in love with Bradley. And these past hours spent with him just reminded her why she loved him.
"Si, are you sure?" Rooster sighed. "Because I don't want to intrude or anything" Rooster scratched the back of his neck. "Omg yes I am sure and I wouldn't have offered if I wasn't!" She exclaimed back. "You know if Mav finds out he won't be happy." Rooster stated firmly. "Please do not worry about my Dadmiral. I am 29 years old with my own home. What is going to to ground me for a week? Tell me I can't go out with my friends... please B, my house, my rules" Harper chirpped back.
"Alright I guess it would be cool to hang out like old times." Rooster finally agreed. "Yay!" Harper squealed and hugged him for the third time that night. "Okay, I will go get a guest room ready for you while you go get your stuff which I assume is in your car?" Harper told him. "Yeah I have my stuff" Rooster replied. "Awesome see you in a few." Harper called as she bounding up the stairs. Rooster would never admit it but he definitely watched her ass bounce up the stairs longer than he should have.
He turned on his heels and walked out to his car. As Rooster grabbed his stuff he let out a breath he didn't realize he had been holding. The thought of living with Harper, his best friend, the woman he had been in love with since he was a kid had him on edge.
As he slammed the door the to Bronco he thought to himself "Jesus Christ Bradley Alexander Bradshaw, what have you gotten yourself into."
Wow.... I know this is long, but I have had this in my mind forever. Special thanks to my inspiration and motivation @marvelsvalhalla for encouraging me to write this please let me know what yall think!

I don't remember why I love to fly anymore.
I don't remember if it's because my dad and all my uncles flew and that's just the life I have lived all my life.
I don't remember if it's because I knew I would always follow Bradley everywhere even if that meant going in the sky.
It had been two days since Dad announced his team. It had been two days since I had talked to anyone, I had barely eaten or slept. I spend most of my time reading or today I found myself at Uncle Tom's grave.
"Hey Uncle Tom," I said softly, "a lot had happened and I miss you dearly." I sat and talked to him for a couple more minutes before wandering around. I knew my mom was buried here somewhere but it's been so long since I've visited so I am kinda just wandering 'till I find her.
I didn't expect to also find Uncle Nick and Aunt Carole in my search. I never went to Carole's funeral and wasn't around yet for Uncle Nick's but I always assumed they were buried closer to the hometown where they met, where Bradley was born. I sat down for a moment between them.
"Hi Aunt Carole, it's good to see you again. I know I have grown a whole lot since the last time you got to play with my hair or fix me some dinner after a long day. I promise we took care of Bradley the best we could, though he left about three days after you died and I don't know why. He won't tell me, actually, neither of them will."
I turned to Uncle Nick.
"Hi Uncle Nick, I'm (Y/N) Collette callsign Lemon." I smile, "I was named after you apparently, though we never got to meet your wife and son love me dearly and I assume you would too. I have heard all the crazy stories from way back when and I want you to know how amazing Bradley has become. He is a wonderful Pilot and an amazing friend. I hope Aunt Carole has told you about me otherwise I'm gonna look like an idiot but I have a feeling if she didn't Bradley or my dad did. I wish I could have met you, I feel like I would have made you proud, dad always says I am exactly like you." I smile before placing a hand on his stone, "You were an amazing man and by proxy, you have an amazing son." I bid them both farewell before moving on to find my mom, coming across her grave soon after.
Charlotte "Charlie" Marie Mitchell
A loving wife, mother, and daughter
09.12.1957 - 03.18.1995
"It takes a lot more than just fancy flying."
"Hi mom," I said softly, "dad is once again being an absolute idiot. I know if you were still here you probably would have agreed with him but still, it is really frustrating when he does stuff like this. I know you never wanted me to fly, and I know there is a lot of my life you are gonna miss because you aren't here anymore. Dad and I miss you terribly, but he's finally healing and moving on and I'm really proud of him for that. Penny is an amazing woman and Olivia and I get along fantastically. You woulda loved them. You woulda loved to see Bradley again too, and according to dad, he looks exactly like his father so there's that."
I hear footsteps approaching behind me.
"Hey, hon," Dad's voice comes out soft, "I know I have visited in a while I've been busy doing what I always did best. Pissing off the Admirals." Dad sat down beside me and threw an arm over my shoulder.
"I have already lost your mother Lem, I can lose my other girl too." I smiled and gave a small nod as we continued to sit and talk to mom, it finally felt like a family again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day we had all loaded onto the boat, Bradley hadn't left my side since we got to the dock and I know it's because he was terrified he isn't gonna make it back from this.
I watched sadly as my dad and best friends prepared their jets for the mission I had no idea if I was ever gonna see them again and frankly I think they were probably thinking the same thing. Bernie graciously allowed me a moment with my dad once he was all situated in his plane.
"Please come home," I said with tears threatening to spill, dad gave me the smile he always did before missions, the one that said, "I'm gonna tell you a will but you know I can't make that promise." I smile back at him as I give him the best hug I can before jumping down and heading swiftly over to Bradley, just to catch him right before the cockpit closes down.
"Lem," He began softly his bottom lip quivering a little.
"Don't," I say, "not now, you're coming home. Please just come home, alive." I add causing him to let out a sad chuckle. I kissed him softly before watching as the glass lowered down, I give him one last look before stepping down from the ladder. I wave to everyone as the rest of the team prepares for the hell that's about to come.
One by one they take off, and after the final of the four leaves the boat I head to the control room with Bernie, as dad told him not to let me leave his sight while he was gone.
The mission had been successful so far but now they were reaching the point where a dogfight would ensue and we were all on the edge of our seats. Sure enough, as Dad came over suicide hill the missiles locked on, and there it was, the chaos of the air with pilots and missiles, guns and explosions. But none of that mattered because Bradley hit the target. The plant exploded from the bottom up and the control room cheered, now it was time for the boys to come home. But the happiness soon subsided when Bradley's voice came panicked over the speaker.
"Dagger One had been hit I repeat Dagger One had been hit."

Every Baby Name We Could Possibly Think Of
Naming your baby is a big decision, and with endless options, it can also be a difficult one. Whether you're going the traditional route or want something more unique (if so, read this first!) it's helpful to have a little, or a lot, of inspiration. Ahead, you'll find nearly every baby name we could think of (close to 1,000!). These aren't just random names we found in a book or concocted ourselves - they're almost all monikers we've heard being used, or we actually know someone who goes by the name. If we missed any, tell us in the comments! Penny asking to her daddy if she can take out on of their boats because she has some friends comeing over and she would like to do something different-
It's the first time they spend a vacation like that together and far away form the land and other people and it gives them some liberties they can't normally take when they are back home.
Which mostly translates in Penny behind the helm and Carole, or Charlie, behind her kissing her neck and whispering how precious she is and how good she is in moving the boat around. Or, even in Penny trying to teach them how to move around and sail on a boat like that. It's only a four days trip, but it feels like a life time of good feelings.

Hi I’m back again, I have a request for our dear Wolfman, again. Would you please write a 50 first dates ?
Thank you again for everything!
💛💛
Thinking of You
Tumblr media
Pairing: (Henry Roth) Leonard "Wolfman" Wolfe (Henry "Wolfman" Ruth) x (Lucy Whitmore) Fem!Reader
Characters: Fem!Reader, Leonard “Wolfman” Wolfe (Henry "Wolfman" Ruth), Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Carol Bradshaw, Bradley Bradshaw, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Ron “Slider” Kerner, Rick “Hollywood” Neven, Marcus “Sundown” Williams, Sam “Merlin” Wells, Charles “Chipper” Piper, Mike “Viper” Metcalf, Bill “Cougar” Cortell, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, Penny Benjamin
Warnings: Fluff, angst, this is cute, Leonard is adorable, reader watches out for herself, everyone is protective of the reader and it's adorable, no fisherman here, only ranchers and cowboys, small town vibes, Iceman and Viper are the best, Pete can't cook for the life of his business, few funny moments, few serious moments here and there
Word Count: 5,307
A/N: I am so so sorry for taking forever with this one. I did not forget it, I promise. It was a whole thing with trying to find inspiration and rewatching the movie for research. But it... is... done!!!
Viper still refers to Bradley as a baby because he is (in his eyes)
Charlie is the horny German lady which I find hilarious
Yes, I used the TGM Squad as the kids for everyone who had children in the movie
The guys all have a work past with Viper
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He takes a seat at the counter, minding his own business as he reads a menu.
You smile as you walk inside, you always love coming here and not just because you get to see Penny and Pete, your favorite couple at the restaurant but because you get to make your waffle buildings.
‘Maybe today I’ll build a hut. Oh, and for the steam we can use coffee.’
Penny notices there’s a little pep in your step while she hands you a menu. “How are you doing, Butterfly?”
You giggle, “I’m doing just fine.”
She smiles and tells you your table is free.
He sees you enter the restaurant, sitting down in one of the empty booths in the middle of the row.
Penny turns around filling another customer’s coffee, she notices the looks he’s sending your way and needs to stop it before things can progress, you don’t need any more heartache (even if you don’t remember it today).
It would also save him from meeting your dad, who’s in charge of the port, Viper aka Mike or your cousin, Iceman aka Tom.
“I wouldn’t,” she tells him.
He furrows his brows and turns towards the waitress. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
“You’ll only find yourself heartbroken if you try to pursue her.”
“What makes you say that?”
She purses her lips; she doesn’t find it necessary to tell him of your accident. But then she realizes he’s new and must be one of the few new cowboys that came into town.
“You’re gone for more than half of the year doing what you do. You’ve never met her but if you did and it was time to leave both of you would be crushed. Imagine how much that for a second.”
“Maybe she’d come with me.”
“She-” She sighs at the wound of glass breaking. “Excuse me while I go kick my husband out of the kitchen.”
“I didn’t do it on purpose, Pen.”
“Out of the kitchen, Maverick," a new voice says.
He doesn't know it, but it was the actual cook, Marcus.
He sighs, pushing the doors open, taking a seat beside the man. “Sounds like you did good there.”
The dejected man chuckles, “yeah.”
“Hey. You happen to know that girl sitting in the booth, would you?”
Pete glances over his slumped shoulder. “What’s it to you?”
“Woah. Woah. Why is everyone so aggressive? I was just asking a question.”
“A question that shouldn’t be asked.”
“Okay. Message received.”
“You seem like the type who won’t take no for an answer?”
Leonard chuckles, “am I really that transparent?” He chuckles to himself as he takes a sip of his coffee until he turns back to look at Pete and realizes how serious this whole thing is. “Oh, shit. Sorry, I just thought-”
“She wouldn’t go for a guy like you,” a voice says sitting on the other side of the rancher.
The two men angle their bodies to hear the man better.
Pete gives him a sarcastic smile. “Yeah, thanks for that, Cougar. We don’t need to give it any more ideas.”
“First off, it has a name and oh, she’s trying to make a door.”
The two look back and focus on you trying to get the finishing touches to your waffle house done.
He debates on walking over to you after hearing everyone’s warnings.
Clearly no one here wants to see anything bad happen to you if they’re this willing to stop him before he could try anything.
He pushes himself out of the chair, grabs a toothpick before heading over to you.
“Hey,” he starts off not to startle you entirely before sticking the toothpick in place, opening and closing the door to show you how well it works. “I thought this might help you a little more.”
You glance up at him, giving him a smile. “Well, then I guess the only thing I can say is thank you. To be honest, it probably would have taken me five minutes to figure it out, so again, I thank you for saving me from any potential embarrassment.”
Leonard lifts his hat, “I always do what I can to help a beautiful lady such as yourself.”
“Ah, I bet you say that to everyone you see then.”
He chuckles. This certainly isn’t what he was expecting when he walked over, it's different, nice even. “May I,” he gestures to the empty side of the booth.
“Please, I’d like to look a little less pathetic in front of, well everyone here.”
“I don’t think that’s possible.”
“You flatter girls to get them in your bed and expect that very thing to happen, don’t you?”
“Uh- well,” he stutters.
You shrug, “doesn’t matter now. I’m just happy to have some company even if it’s just for a minute or two.”
“Well, then I’m happy to be of service.”
You dazzle him with another smile.
This is different from the other times he's gone out with girls.
You lift your watch to check the time. “Oh, looks like it's time for me to go. Sorry,” you sheepishly shrug as you reach for your bag.
“Uh- oh, okay. Yeah, I guess it’s time I went back to work.”
You get up and barely walk past him when you stop. “Is that you?”
“Is what me?”
“The farm smell?”
His mouth opens into an “o” making it obvious he now knows what you’re talking about. “Oh, yeah. Perks of being a rancher. Sorry about the smell. I didn’t realize it was so bad.”
You shake your head. “No, it’s- it’s not that. It’s just- it's more of a comfort thing. It reminds me of my family because my dad and my cousin are in the ranching business, and this is- the smell of, well the farm, is basically what I grew up with.”
He nods, “okay, good to know I don’t smell too much like shit.”
You chuckle, shaking your head. “Happy to help but I seriously have to go now.”
“Okay.”
You head over to Penny and pay her before saying bye to everyone.
Leonard shakes his head once he sees your car leave. “She sure is something else.” He then heads over to his car, sneakily watching you leave.
-
He spends the night talking to Rick, watching his kids. “So, you gonna ask her out?”
“Me?” Leonard shakes his head, pulling Rick’s youngest, Javy, away from the fence before his beloved (crazy) goat comes over and towards the edge to scare the kids.
The rancher isn't going to have his headbutting, crossed eyed goat injure another one of his friends' kids (even if it's on them because they didn't listen). “I- no.”
“You like her?”
The kids’ “ooh” at their dad’s comment.
“What? No. She’s just- she’s... busy?”
“Excuses.” He pushes himself off the fence, “come on kids. Your uncle needs alone time to process the fact that he’s a wimp.”
The kids mumble wimp under their breaths as they walk by.
He’s left alone with his thoughts.
-
“Did she get offered any drugs today?” Mike asks his nephew.
Tom shakes his head, “no and you know she wouldn’t take anything anyway.”
“She wouldn’t know.”
The blond glances over at the older man.
“Don’t give me that look boy.”
Neither of them says anything else as they go their separate ways before going out to the garage so they can repaint the wall.
Nick and Carole walk to the open space, "hey guys."
"Do you know what got her in such a happy mood today?" Mike asks.
The couple glance at one another.
"When we went to get food, Penny said that one of the new ranchers came in and talked to her, but I don't know what happened," Carole tells him.
"A new rancher?"
She nods. "Yeah, he's the only one here who wears his hat twenty-four seven."
"And you don't know anything about this?" Tom asks Nick.
The mustached man narrows his eyes at him, "if we knew anything else we would have told you."
"I'm just checking, mother Goose. No need to get your p-"
Mike smacks his nephew on the back of his head. "Stop it. Nick take another roll and again, thank you for the food, Carole. If you could just-"
"Set it on the counter for later, I'd be happy to."
"How's life been with the baby?"
"It's been great. I know it makes her sad that we can't bring him around here. All they've wanted since they were kids was for their kids to be friends and hangout all the time."
Mike sighs, "yeah."
Carole sneaks up the stairs to check on you. She barely opens the door and sees you standing there, a smile breaks across her face. She's happy to know that you're safe and sound for another day.
-
The next day is a weird one... for Leonard.
He had no idea what was going to happen when he made his way to the restaurant, and he most certainly wasn’t expecting you to not remember him (and mean it).
Sure, he’s had a few girls say they don’t remember him but after some persuading and mentions of certain clues, they break, this time with you though, not so much.
A few minutes passed after you ran out until someone explained to him why he shouldn’t continue doing what he’s doing.
“Everyone knows but,” Penny sighs. “She was in an accident that killed her mom and left her with what the doctors believe to be permanent brain damage.”
That is the last thing Leonard was expecting to learn about you. “All those light threats make sense now.”
“Now that you know, are you going to keep trying to date her?” Penny asks him. "Because if you’re not and you break her heart, you can just leave now. We won’t tolerate that kind of behavior.”
He nods and finishes his coffee, coming up with a few ideas.
-
Rick lounges on his couch, as usual, and watches as his friend jots down a few things. “You must really like this girl if you’re so willing to do just about anything for her.”
Leonard shrugs, “I don’t think that’s it.”
“Well, you’re doing something really nice for her, someone you’ve met a few times. As for me, your best friend barely gets a birthday card.”
“You’ve been giving yourself your own gift every year.”
“Oh, yeah and what’s that?”
“Your kids.”
“Damn, you’re good.”
-
He sits at the counter in front of the kitchen, waiting for you to come in so he can ask to eat with you.
You enter, at the same time as always, greeting Penny and Pete before sitting down to look at the menu.
He stands up and walks over to you, “hey, is this seat taken?”
You look up from the menu, “yeah, that’s my boyfriend's seat.”
“Oh, it is?”
You nod, “and he won’t be happy to know that some random guy sat there while talking to his girlfriend.”
“What if we say we’re just friends?”
“Are we though? I mean, I don’t even know your name.”
“Leonard.”
“I wasn’t asking. Look, I gotta go.”
Everyone hears the commotion outside and runs out to see what’s happening, Penny and Leonard being the fastest to get outside when they hear your voice.
“It’s not- it’s October thirteenth.”
Nick slams his car door closed before rushing over, wrapping his arms around you, wanting to give you some kind of protection.
Leonard takes a step forward, ready to tell the cop everything when Penny gets to him first.
Pete grabs the cowboy, “you and Goose are gonna take her home. She needs to be with her family right now. She needs comfort.”
He nods, taking his words into consideration.
The boys get you into the car, but the ride home is a blur, you don’t even know if you’ve responded to Leonard.
-
Your father and cousin are outside before you know it.
"What happened?" Mike asks, taking in your state of distress.
Nick looks up at the older man with sad eyes. "She found out again."
He closes his eyes, rubbing his chin.
Tom comes to your other side, the two men helping you inside.
The mustached man stops the rancher before he could step any further onto his front porch. "I'm gonna have to stop you right there."
Leonard furrows his brows. "What do you mean?"
"You being here isn't good for her."
"What does that mean?"
"This is something we've done before. You have never been involved."
"How would you know?"
"You don't know her, and you don't need to concern yourself with her. I'm asking you once and only once. It's time for you to go."
The man turns around, not even waiting to see if he's going to walk away.
Nick peaks through the window, whispering, "what are you doing?"
Leonard rushes closer. "He kicked me out."
"He doesn't want her to be more heartbroken than she is. Are you here for her or for you?"
"What- why are you asking?"
"If you're here because you want to date her, I'll let you in. If not, you can turn your sorry ass around."
He didn't even have to hesitate. "Open the door."
The blond smiles and lifts the windowpane higher. "You said you'd open the door."
"I'd like to not have my ass kicked too bad, thank you."
He rolls his eyes and crawls through, listening to your cries as you listen to what you went through again.
"Can we- I want to talk to the doctor." You quietly hiccup, "I'm sure I've already talked to him but let me go again. Please?" You ask your father.
He nods and you all are off to the facility you were in for some time after your accident.
-
"It's the same thing I've told you before," Dr. Simpson finishes.
You nod, "I'm sure you have, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me again."
Leonard and Nick were stuck talking to one of the patients, (ten second) Sam.
"Hi, I'm Sam."
They nod and introduce themselves to him and continue to do so until Tom grabs them by their collars, hauling them out of the building.
"You two idiots wanted to stay. Stop getting distracted."
-
Once you got home, you decided to go to your room and write in your journal, needing to process everything.
"Would it- could I go talk to her?"
Mike silently nods.
"Go get 'em, tiger."
Nick averts his gaze your dad's stern look.
-
He knocks on the door, waiting for you to answer as he removes his hat.
The door swings open.
You stare at him through your lashes. "What do you want?"
"To talk. Check on you."
"I'm fine. Go home. I'd say I'll talk to you tomorrow, but I'll forget you by midnight." You walk back into your room, leaving the door open.
He takes that as an invitation and enters. "I- uh-"
"I don't want you to feel like you have to stay after everything you’ve learned. I would understand if you didn't want to talk anymore."
"No!" He nearly screams before realizing his mistake and sits down. "I mean, I don't mind it. This- your twenty-four-hour memory is no problem. I- I actually think you're worth getting to know, every day."
You don't give him a verbal response as you nod, unsure of how to respond.
As you two bask in the silence, the other's downstairs are preparing for the next day.
-
“You coming to the garage or are you going to call Carole?” Tom asks him after his uncle walks out of the room.
“What do you think?”
Your cousin rolls his eyes, “still as lazy as the day I met you.”
“Hey, I am offended.”
“Good.”
Nick shakes his head, mumbling a variety of comebacks that he would never say out loud because he values his life.
-
Leonard reaches around, rubbing your shoulder, not realizing the time or what’s about to happen.
You wake, opening your eyes and start screaming, alerting everyone in the house.
Tom and Mike make it to your room in no time.
The older man hauls the rancher out of your room and out of the house. “I thought I told you to stay away.”
“You might have.”
“Then why aren’t you?”
“Sir, I really care about your daughter and honestly, the thought of showing her how much I care about her everyday sounds-”
“Like you’ve got some kind of ulterior motive.”
“That hurts. No, I mean, telling her every day that I care for her and making her fall for me again and again. I can’t explain it but, I know I’m the right guy for her. Everyone here cares for her and I’d like to count myself lucky enough to be a part of that community. I know you think I’m messing with her but that’s not true and even if you push me away, I will still be here and continue to stand by her.”
Mike has a lot to think about now.
He nods, “don’t come around today. She needs time to heal and take it all in, you hear me?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I’m sure I'll hear from you later. Now go.”
Leonard smiles as he leaves. He spends the day making a gift, as a precaution he doesn’t come by for a couple of days.
Leonard has a lot of things to think about.
If he stays and builds a relationship with you, he’s going to be putting his dreams on the back burner; something he’s had his mind set on for a long, long time now.
Can he, do it?
Is it worth it?
As much as it hurts him to think about, he needs to. But then he thinks of you again and it is.
He makes a mental note to email his response.
-
He knocks on the door and Tom answers it. “You’re back? I thought you decided to leave.”
The rancher shakes his head, “nope. Can’t get rid of me that easily. I- uh- I actually made something and I want to play it for her. I don’t know if it’ll help but, you never know.”
He steps aside, giving Leonard enough room to walk by.
“Thanks.”
You and your father enter the living room, seeing him placing the tape in the VHS player.
The tape plays before either of you could ask what's going on.
Your name flashes across the screen, drawing your attention along with mentions of the accident and Bradley, Carole and Nick's son who's four now.
You touch the scar hidden by your hair.
Tom stands back, waiting for what you decide to do.
Mike rubs his hand across his face. "Did you do this?"
He nods. "I did."
You take a deep breath and grab his arm, bringing him with you.
-
"Where are we going?"
You don't answer him.
"Should I be worried?"
You stop in front of your car. "Do you ever shut up?"
"I could."
"Do it now."
"Stop being mean to me or I swear I'm gonna fall in love with you."
You roll your eyes. "I need to talk to you, and I don't want to do it with my guard dogs nearby."
"Oh, sure."
He opens the door for you, earning a furrowed brow look from you.
You don't say anything as you drive to the one place no one knows about.
"Are we-"
"The accident site, yeah. I didn’t know that at the time but now that I do, it doesn't change the special value it holds."
"That's good." He turns to you, seeing the way you're staring at him. "What?"
"We need to end this."
"End what?"
"You know what."
"Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Leonard-"
He cuts you off before you can continue. "You remember my name?"
"If you'd let me get a word in, you'd know that the only reason I know of you is because I have a journal. I've been keeping notes of everything, I just- I never realized it."
"And that means we need to not see each other anymore?"
"Exactly."
"Why?"
"You."
"I'm not following."
"You," you close your eyes, huffing through your nose. "You're so sweet and have been since we first met but you're going to get hurt."
"What makes you think that?"
"You've stayed longer than any guy ever has but to do this every day is just- I know it's a lot."
"It's nothing."
"See, that!" You point at him. "That right there is exactly why I'm ending this. You've got such a pure heart and I can't be the reason it breaks when you realize it's not worth it to stay."
"Who's to say that I'll stop feeling what I do?"
You avoid eye contact as your tears blur your vision. "You will, just like I know how my father and Tom are tired of it. They'll never admit it, but everyone has their breaking point and I think us meeting and seeing each other has pushed theirs. I'm really sorry, I like you. I do but I'm doing this to protect us."
You offer him a weak smile as the tears spill from your eyes and down your cheeks.
Before you leave to go back inside, you hand him your journal.
He pulls you back and kisses you.
Your first kiss with one another and it's amazing but can't last forever.
You pull away, walking inside with heavy steps; barely able to keep yourself together.
Tom nor Mike stops you, but they do make sure to call Nick and Carole, knowing you'll need a good day tomorrow even if you don't remember it.
-
Leonard doesn't come into the diner for a few days.
Carole sits with you at your job while Rick, Nick, and Pete drive Mike and Tom to see him off.
"What are you guys doing here?"
"We couldn't let you leave without saying goodbye," Rick tells him.
"That's nice but how do you know these guys?" Leonard points between the guys in the group.
"We used to work together before I decided to settle down," his friend explains.
"Is that what you've been telling people?" Pete asks, staring at the man with a confused expression.
Rick glances at the man, "what are you talking about? Of course, that's what I've been telling people. It's the truth."
Pete shrugs, "I just thought-"
"Thought what?"
Nick smacks the two across the back of their heads. "Alright you idiots, there's a time and a place to talk about this. Now is not it."
The two grumbled, rubbing the now sore spot.
"We came here to talk to Wolfman before he left."
"You told them?"
"We all worked for him," Rick points to Mike. "Of course, I'm going to tell them."
"Anyway," the oldest chimes in. "We're here to send you off but not before giving you this." He hands him a CD.
"Really?" The rancher asks, not understanding the sentimental thought behind it just yet.
Mike nods, "I think you'll like it. Check side B, song four. Everything will make sense after that." The older man walks away, letting the others take their time in following.
Nick pats Leonard on the back, saluting him before wishing him luck. "I wish you luck, my friend."
"I'm pretty sure you just jinxed me."
"That's for the theater and you're going to need it one way or another."
The rancher frowns.
Pete chuckles, "you really leaving?"
The blond shrugs. "What else can I do? She told me she doesn't want me, and I can't force myself into her life, you know. Whether she remembers me or not. I'm going to respect her decision."
"That's really nice of you, not everyone would do that."
"I keep telling you I'm not like everyone."
"And I understand why. You're going to do great, kid."
The man in the cowboy hat purses his lips as his brows knit together in confusion. "If I'm not mistaken, we're the same age."
"Potato, potahtoe."
"Not the same."
Pete smirks and slaps his arm before jogging to Mike's car.
"You really want to leave?" Rick asks, standing beside him, resting his arms on the fence. "Because I'm not buying this whole "I can do this" thing. I mean, from what I've heard it sounds like you love her but who am I to assume."
Leonard shakes his head, "you heard wrong."
"That's a load of bull and you know it."
"You'll never know."
"The kids are going to miss you."
"They'll find something else to occupy them."
“You know they won’t.”
“Whatever you say, man.”
Rick’s hand hovers over his friend’s shoulder, he doesn’t pat him like everyone else had (knowing he’ll be back in no time). “You’re an idiot.”
Leonard lets out a dry, “thanks.”
Tom gives him a knowing look, “you know I’m right.”
“If you’re just going to be a jerk, leave with the others. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“You said you were going to stay by her side no matter what. What happened to that guy?”
“She made the decision. She doesn’t want me around; thinks she’s going to save me from heartache or something.”
“You’re an idiot.” Tom walks away, leaving him with his thoughts.
Leonard shakes his head, not understanding half of what just happened; all he knows is that he’s offended. He hops in his truck, his heart heavy and mind full of useless thoughts; he places the CD in the car player.
Half forgetting he’s had the damn thing this whole time and never once thought to use it. He skips to the song Mike told him to play.
He’s barely on the road for ten minutes and gets out of his thoughts, his fingers stop tapping along to the beat on the steering wheel when he slams on the brakes. “Holy shit! Holy- no way. No way!”
His smile is as wide as can be. “I knew the old man liked me.”
He turns the car around and heads towards the office you visited when you were told about the accident again.
-
He runs through the door, trying to sneak in by the security guards before anyone can kick him out.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?” He turns to face them, removing his hat.
He shrugs, not saying a word.
Maybe playing dumb would be easier?
The taller of the two stares at him with raised brows as his partner takes in Leonard’s appearance. “Go on in.”
Ron turns to Charles, “what’s wrong with you? What if he was a murderer or some psycho?”
“Did he look like a psycho to you?”
“No but-”
“But nothing. I got good vibes from him.”
“What did you smoke for breakfast?”
“I’m not answering that,” Charles says, checking the computer for today’s schedule.
“If someone gets murdered, I’m not protecting you.”
“Dick move.”
“Cya, man.”
“What?”
Ron pats his shoulder, “cover your ass. I’d remember that if I were you.”
-
Leonard runs into the room, eyes scanning all around and over anyone in the room, only to not find you, for the moment.
He wanders further into the room, tempted to ask around when he sees ten second Sam and decides not to, there’s too much time that could be wasted and he can’t waste a second right now.
You turn the corner, not noticing him as you help someone outline the outline of their sketch.
A voice calls out to you, and you turn, finding him.
“Hi? Do you- nevermind, stupid question. Could I- uh- could I talk to you for a minute?” He asks.
You know everyone here will be fine for a few minutes. You hesitate to answer him. “I- we can- just- just follow me.”
-
You two stand in your special art room. “Have we met before?”
His chin juts out. “What?” His eyes wander around the room, finally understanding.
“As you can see, I’ve seen you before. I mean, I know I’ve talked to you, but I don’t remember it. You- you haunt my dreams. I’ve seen us in my favorite restaurant, as if we were on a date and- and I don’t know if it was real or not.” He can see how it’s wracking your brain to try and remember something that won’t be there.
He nods, “we have. We’ve met a few times.”
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
He holds a journal in front of you, “if you really want to find out, read this. It’ll tell you everything.”
You stare at the cover, wondering if you should read it or not.
You hold it close to your chest and stretch your hand out for him. “Hi.”
He raises his brow but shakes your hand. “Hi?”
“We’re starting over.”
“Oh, that makes more sense.”
The door opens, “Hi, “I’m Sam.”
You purse your lips, trying to hold in your laughter.
“And our special moment has a little twist.”
“Leave Sam out?”
He nods, “we’re leaving him out.”
You nod and slowly remove your hand from his. “Hi, I’m Sam.”
“I swear to-”
-
You push open the door and cover your eyes when the sun hits you. Leonard turns around and smiles at the sight of you looking as beautiful as always. “Hey, you’re up.”
You nod, your eyes landing on your precious baby boy, Jake, pretending to be like his dad with ranching.
“How are you feeling this morning?”
Your daughter, Natasha, runs over to you with her arms open for a hug.
Everyone always says that a mother and her child share a special bond, in this case it’s true because you open your arms and scoop her up, holding her close to you, even if it is a little strange just finding out she’s your daughter after watching the video Leonard made for you.
“I’m okay, a little weird this morning.”
“I don’t blame you.”
You tilt your head up at him, staring at him like you’re trying to memorize his face. “I think Tom’s doing things he shouldn’t.”
He turns around, finding your cousin doing the exact opposite of what he told him to and hands Jake to your father so he can help your cousin from messing up his ranch (any more than he already has). “Son of a-”
“Language!” You and Mike shout.
“I wasn’t going to actually say it,” Leonard tells you two.
You and your dad share a look. “He’s your husband, you take care of it.” And he walks away.
“So rude,” you mumble to yourself.
“Hey guys!” Nick and Carole wave as Bradley runs towards Natasha (who hasn’t left your side until this moment).
You smile and wave back, hugging Carole tightly.
“Let's go inside and see what you have in your kitchen for breakfast.”
You lean in closer to her, whispering, “does he ever eat? I swear he is always raiding my pantry.”
“Fast metabolism.”
“I don’t buy it.”
“Can I tell you something?” She asks.
You nod.
“Neither do I.”
-
You, Carole, and Nick grimace at the sight of Leonard's friend and his coworker-
"Can they eat each other's faces somewhere else?" Nick mumbles. "I'm trying to eat here."
You and her share a look.
"You're still eating," his wife points out.
He shrugs. "I can't pass up when Sundown cooks. That'd be like disrespecting Penny."
Leonard walks through the door and grimaces. "You two need to stop trying to eat each other and enjoy breakfast. This is not what I imagined when I suggested you two go out."
Charlotte and Rick part from one another, offering weak apologies.
You and Carole can't help but laugh.
The rancher turns around at the sound of your laughter and knows that he wouldn’t trade this for the world.

The Help - Movie
Tumblr media
The Help takes place in Jackson, Mississippi the year of 1963. This period of time was during the Jim Crow laws and racial segregation and discrimination in the southern United States. Even though the Civil War abolished slavery, blacks were still being discriminated against. The Jim Crow law, that Aibileen Clark was deathly afraid of, demanded racial segregation in all public places, such as public schools, public transportation - buses and trains, separate entrances to public facilities such as movie theaters and restaurants, separate drinking fountains and restrooms for whites and for blacks, and to go so far as prohibiting blacks from living in some towns, some black people couldn't vote because they couldn't pass a voter literacy test, and interracial marriage was illegal. The Jim Crow Laws were finally overruled by the Civil Rights Act in 1964 that was initiated by President John F. Kennedy before he was assassinated.
Upon returning from Ole Miss College, Skeeter Phelan (a white socialite woman) desired to be a famous write someday. Skeeter's publisher (Miss Stein) told her to write about what disturbs her. Skeeter became very uncomfortable with the racist attitudes and the disrespectful ways her wealthy socialite friends (Elizabeth Leefolt, Hilly Holbrook, Jolene French) acted towards their maids. It was those uncomfortable feelings that guided Skeeter to write a book depicting the view from the help - the maids. Skeeter's conversation with Miss Stein: "These colored women raise white children, and then in twenty years those children become the boss. We love them, and they love us, but they can't even use the toilets in our houses. Don't you find that ironic, Miss Stein?"
The main character in the movie, Aibileen Clark, is a black maid that takes care of Mae Mobley - Elizabeth Leefolt's daughter. Aibileen takes pride in her work as she states, "Taking care a white babies, that’s what I do, along with all the cooking and the cleaning. I done raised seventeen kids in my lifetime. I know how to get them babies to sleep, stop crying, and go in the toilet bowl before they mamas even get out a bed in the morning."Mae Mobley loved Aibileen. In one scene Mae Mobley caresses Aibileen's cheek and says, "You're my real mama, Aibee."
Minny Jackson is Aibileen's best friend and is notably "the best cook in Jackson, Mississippi." Minny is the maid of Mrs. Walters - mother of Hilly Holbrook. Because of Minny's temper, her brash tongue, and her attempt to use the Holbrook family bathroom, Hilly fired Minny.
Hilly was adamant that black people shouldn't use white people's bathrooms, "Tell Raleigh every penny he spends on a colored's bathroom, he'll get back in spades when y'all sell. It's just plain dangerous. They carry different diseases than we do." (Bathroom Segregation video https://youtu.be/E-g9PX-cAWs). Hilly sent her, "Home Help Sanitation Initiative," to the governor to sign - it would ban all black servants from using their white employer’s bathroom.  All the maids in Jackson feared Hilly because she could destroy a maid if she had a grudge against them - which she unfairly did to Minny.
Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter take on the task of revealing the truth (both good and bad) about the way southern white women and families treated their black maids and service people.
Skeeter first interviewed Aibileen, then Minny decided to help. Soon other maids came forward to share their stories of how they spent their entire lives taking care of southern families and the treatment they received from them. Skeeter also shared her story of being raised by a black maid, Constantine Jefferson, that worked for the family for 29 years. Skeeter loved Constantine like a mother and reveals how her mother broke Constantine's heart when she fired her. The maids believed that telling their stories to be published in a book, they were doing their part to end the inhumane treatment of the black people and it was their way to help with the Civil Rights Movement. The book was to be published anonymously, however, the women became fearful that their stories would be recognized in their small community and retaliation would ensue. Aibileen reveals that she was more afraid of authoring the book, than she was afraid of the "Jim Crow" laws. Minny reveals her "terrible awful" secret that she thinks will be insurance that could keep their stories a secret - her secret chocolate pie ingredients.

During the Reconstructionperiod, blacks began to take leadership roles and were pushing hard for legislative changes for equality. Trying to disregard the progress of the blacks and to keep blacks and whites separated, the "Jim Crow" laws were established. Skeeter obtained a copy of "The Mississippi Code of Conduct for Non-Whites" and began to read the laws that were being enforced on black people. Here are a few examples of the laws: Books were not to be used between the white and colored schools, they could only be used by the race first using them. Black barbers could not serve white women or girls. Anyone who printed, published or circulated materials about social equality between whites and negroes is subject to imprisonment. Interracial marriage was illegal. Most blacks couldn't vote because they were unable to pass a voter literacy tests. Blacks couldn't use the same public facilities as whites, nor live in many white towns, or got to the same schools as whites. During the Reconstruction period the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was established to impose violence on both black and white leaders because they were wanting to reverse the laws and progress of the Reconstruction advancements. To further undermine the progress made, the US Supreme Court stated in the Plessy v. Ferguson case that facilities for blacks and whites could be "separate but equal." Years later, in the "Brown v. Board of Education"case the US Supreme Court made segregation illegal in the public schools. The Civil Rights Act of 1957, signed by President Eisenhower, declared that anyone trying to prevent someone from voting could be punished with federal prosecution. In 1963 the March on Washingtonwas a civil rights movement organized by Civil Rights leaders of Martin Luther King, A. Philip Randolph, and Bayard Rustin. It was a peaceful march of over 200,000 people to bring attention and to force civil rights legislation and job equality for everyone. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech became the slogan for equality and freedom. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed by President John F. Kennedy, proclaimed equal employment for all and federal authorities could be used to make sure all public facilities were integrated. The Voting Rights Act of 1965banned the use of all voter literacy tests. 1968 the Fair Housing Act became a law that prevented housing discrimination based on race, national origin, religion and sex. Civil Rights Leaders and activists, Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, Malcom X, and President John F. Kennedy all fought hard for the Civil Rights movement. However, during that time, they were assassinated.
The book was published and was a huge success - except Ms. Hilly didn't like it. Ms. Hilly read the book and immediately knew Chapter 12 of the book was about her. She threatened Skeeter with a law suit but got no satisfaction from that threat. Aibileen got retaliation as Ms. Hilly pressured Ms. Elizabeth to fire her. The most touching part of the movie: https://youtu.be/FuyAt68pj3I

How do children learn about race, biases, and prejudice? Racism is how people interpret, adopt, and repeat inequality. Are we born with preconceived concepts of racism? Babies are born capable of learning things without being taught - how to suck for nourishment, how to make sounds to communicate, how to crawl, and they learn to talk by listening to others. As children grow they learn to sort things by colors and shapes. At an early age they begin to sort their world and form their own ideas. Children use this cognitive development to sort people too. However, they are not forming racism, they are observing and categorizing. Erin N. Winkler from the Africology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has studied the topic of "how children form their ideas about race during early stages of development" (https://www.wiscontext.org/how-kids-learn-about-race-stereotypes-and-prejudice).
"As curious young minds begin to figure out shapes and colors, they're also seeing visible differences among people and determining their own identities - including racial awareness.  Of course, this development doesn't mean that children are inherently bigoted - rather, their thinking about race stems from normal processes of observing and categorizing." (Winkler, 2009)
Studies have been conducted as far back as the 1940s-1950s when Mamie and Kenneth Clark did their "Doll Study." The study gave African-American children a choice between a black doll and a white doll. (The Life and Challenges of Mamie and Kenneth Clark: https://youtu.be/kG90mSaWUpE). The majority of the children preferred the white doll and gave more positive qualities to the white doll.

There was a racism experiment conducted in a classroom by a 3rd grade teacher, Jane Elliott from Riceville, Iowa. Her experiment was carried out after the assassination of Martin Luther King. She wanted her students to internalize and begin to understand what racism and discrimination felt like. Brown Eyes and Blue Eyes Racism Experiment: https://youtu.be/KHxFuO2Nk-0. In Jane Elliot's experiment she began by dividing her students into two groups of eye colors - The Brown-eyed group and The Blue-eyed group. She told the children that the children with brown eyes were "superior and smarter" and gave them extra privileges and praise. She then told the children with blue eyes they were "inferior, unruly, and untrustworthy," and treated them like second class citizens. The next day roles were reversed. Jane Elliott was shocked at what she seen. “I watched what had been marvelous, cooperative, wonderful, thoughtful children turn into nasty, vicious, discriminating little third-graders, in the space of 15 minutes.” Jane Elliot explained to the children that what they learned over the last two days was "a filthy, nasty word called discrimination," which means "treating people a certain way because they are different." Through her experiment, she was able to teach the children what it felt like to be victims of prejudice.
At the University of Yale's Baby Lab that supports the research of Erin N. Winkler. Are babies born with a type of bias? is produced by CNN's Anderson Cooper as he visits the University of Yale's Baby Lab where researchers study the minds of infants - https://youtu.be/3EoNYklyShs.
Two more studies were conducted from the University of Yale's Child Study Center where they investigate human development to understand the mental health of children. In 2010, AC360°team reinvestigated the original "Doll Study" to determine what are children's current racial beliefs, attitudes, preferences, and skin tone preferences at two different developmental stages. This is the outcome of that study: of Inside the AC360 Doll Study: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYCz1ppTjiM. To further this Doll Study, parents were interviewed as to what their responses were about their children's answers in that study, I Was Upset of How My Child Views Race: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm_CfET1Ffg.
My understandings from the three videos and research is that racism or racial bias is a significant problem. If we don't believe it is a problem, then why are so many black children choosing the white dolls over their own skin toned black dolls?

Kids on Race: The Hidden Picture did another study: A Look at Race Relations through a Child's Eyes. This study interviewed 145 Kids at 6 schools across 3 states. The children were majority white, majority African American, and racially diverse. Children were shown two pictures with one white and one black child, both near a swing. The study reveals that 70% of white children interpreted there was something negative happening, as opposed to only 38% of the black children. https://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2012/images/03/29/ac360.race.study.pdf
Skin Color - The Way Kids See It (https://youtu.be/JcAuO0PNnrs) shows that there is hope that change in children's perception or racism is shifting.
Kiri Davis, a young filmmaker, conducted a documentary, A Girl Like Me: (https://youtu.be/z0BxFRu_SOw) that shows there is still a racial gap in our American Culture. In this video she interviews young African-American women and they discuss finding their own identities and being accepted. She also conducted her own "doll test" on 21 black children. 15 out of the 21 children chose the white doll. Why do African-Americans still feel the effects of racism so many years after the Civil Rights Movement?
What needs to happen to  ensure children become more accepting of people of all races and cultures? "Children are aware very young that color, language, gender, and physical ability differences are connected with privilege and power." (Derman-Sparks) Jane Elliott stated: "Racism was something that people learned" - something adults need to stop displaying and teaching. Adults need to educate themselves, so they can be knowledgeable and accurate when talking to children about racial discrimination. We need to be aware of our own actions as children learn about their world and the people around them from their observations. We need to talk about what acceptance of all race and cultures should look like and feel like. We need to discuss openly, age appropriate conversations, about racial differences and treat people as equals, worthy, and have potential. Children should not be brought up as "colorblind" and not understanding what racism is. We need to empower children to be racially conscious and teach them how to combat inequality and discrimination. They need to learn how to celebrate diversity and to recognize their own identities. Children should be taught what it is like to live in an unequal society.  Children should not learn about negative stereotypes, biases, or racism from social media, movies, or inappropriate role models. As we teach children, adults need to empower them in building a positive self-identity that can "develop critical thinking and the skills for standing up for oneself and others in the face of injustice." (Derman-Sparkes) Children need to learn about racism from a trusting adult that will teach them not to discriminate and to treat everyone equally - we are all the same, just a little different.

Sore thighs (sfw/nsfw)
Callie's thighs are sore after a long day behind the cockpit, and Nat has the best idea on how to shoot away the pain and the bother. It involves Callie's favourite oil massage, her girlfriend's magical fingers, and a stream of praise that makes Callie blush all over her face and her cleverage.
Carole's last menstrual cycle left her with shaky legs and sore thighs, and she doesn't know if to let her legs open or close them because no position helps. If you add that it seems like Penny decided to try every bikini she fucking owns, Carole can't really help herself when she tries to choke on a moan because she was trying to study, oh god. It all solves itself—the aching and Penny's damn biking—when Charlie gets back home and kisses Carole long enough to let herself forget about what was happening and long enough that, when they separate, she is moaning for all a different reason.
