Conviction - Part 6 - Judgement Day (6/6)
Leon and Millie arrive at a disturbance at a playground on the West Gate Estate to find Ara Byatt desperately searching for her niece Jala. Jala had to watch her father die when they were being trafficked by the Devlin's and he and another man were crushed by the poorly loaded contents falling on them. Today is the first day in court.
Callum finds Smithy sat in the darkness of the locker room. Smithy's staring at his warrant card, enduring flashbacks of assaulting Jason Devlin. Callum reassures him not to worry about the witness, everyone knows he's been bought. He's interrupted by Leon reporting over the radio that Jala has gone missing. Smithy and Callum rush to the estate. Leon reports the only other person he saw after their arrival was a road sweeper. Callum tells him to find him and if he can't to get in touch with his boss and track him down that way.
At the court, Neil and Jack learn that Devlin's barrister is very expensive - Daddy must be worried! Smithy has not been called by the prosecution but the barrister wants him on standby just in case he's needed to give evidence. He's going to focus on Hassiq informing about the people trafficking as he classes the assault to be a distraction. Hassiq insists he wants Devlin to look him in the eyes and see that he's not scared of them. He finally feels like a man who is worthy of Ara - if she wants him - now he's speaking out.
Smithy stays with Ara and tries to calm her down and get her to talk through what has happened. Tony and Callum start going door to door. She asks Smithy to speak to his superiors and get them to tell Hassiq that Jala has been taken as she thinks it's either the Devlin's or the community that have taken her to stop him giving evidence - the Devlin's to collapse the trial or the community to stop daylight being shone on so many illegal immigrants living on the estate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The prosecution barrister opens his case explaining that Devlin is the head of an organised crime group who are involved in human trafficking and the evidence was kept by his bookkeeper who is one of the people he trafficked into the country. The evidence will be deciphered in detail by said bookkeeper - Hassiq. Jack refuses to let Hassiq know about Jala, calling it management not manipulation. Instead he sends every available officer to track her down.
Millie gives evidence and explains Smithy rescued Jala and then returned for her father when she told them he was there. Smithy did his best to save him but it was too late. Jala had to witness the entire thing. The prosecution barrister asks Millie if Smithy was very upset by finding the two men trapped. Millie explains that he was doing his job and the barrister asks again, pointing out that it's distressing to hear Millie was distressed at the time and then asks again if Smithy was. Nah love, he was tap dancing. Bit of a generous bit emotional manipulation to make out Smithy was the most distressed out of all of them and that's why he attacked Devlin. Even the judge fails to see the relevance but the barrister claims Smithy's emotional response is at the heart of their defence and as the prosecution haven't called Smithy she can't ask him herself. When it's allowed, Millie says Smithy was concerned.
Hassiq is delivered to court by Kezia and Will but before they can stop it, Ara runs towards him and tells him about Jala. Neil tells him they don't know what has happened and everyone is out looking for her. He tells him he can go later in the running order but not to give up entirely and let the Devlin's go free. After all, Jala's fathers death would be for nothing. He refuses to give evidence until Jala is found.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack is now fuming that Hassiq knows about Jala. Smithy insists it wasn't their secret to keep and that they only get to keep their trust by playing it straight and he's sick of all the lies. Callum tells him he didn't have to be the taxi driver (he drove Ara to court) and that without Hassiq's evidence Smithy is 'the main event'.
Jala has been spotted on the route to her school walking behind three girls. She never made it into school so Rachel wants the girls identified and questioned. It could be witness intimidation so they need to find her quickly to ensure her safety and that the Devlin's don't walk out of court scot free.
Smithy insists to Callum he's going to make it up the right way by finding Jala. Callum says he'll tell him what the school say. In passing Stuart mocks Smithy and says CID 'love him up there'. Stevie tells him to ignore him. Ara doesn't recognise and of the girls Jala was following. Stevie asks if Jala could have gone off for time to think and Ara shakes her head and explains Jala is scared to be alone and that she thinks it's to stop Hassiq giving evidence. Stevie asks if anyone could have cottoned on to their relationship and Ara explains they never went to each others flat and always met away from where people who know them would be. If they met at the community center they would simply say hello and that they're not like Westerners with it on show, they treat love as being private. Stevie explains that Smithy was suggesting that however successfully she thinks they've hidden it, feelings always have a way of showing. "Sometimes you can't help it." She says, looking at Smithy. (this is weird... They're trying to imply something happened and continued after Gun Runner a year ago when it didn't, they agreed to continue just being friends and didn't even have *moments*. And after this it's all forgotten again. It's very confusing and only there for the storyline!)
Callum locates the girls who were walking with Jala. One, Vicky Bell, was assigned to be her 'buddy' so that she could find her way around school but it's clear they're not 'friends'. Vicky says she was with them but went back because she forgot her PE kit. In a search Millie finds Jala's bag at the side of the canal. One strap has been broken but there's no sign of blood or violence other than the strap. Callum and Tony spot Vicky again a little later. She says she's going home because school is over despite it being not even 12. Callum suggests she's looking for Jala's bag to see if they'd found it. He asks what happened. She tells him that they tried to make her come to school but she wouldn't because one of the other girls was bullying her about her father and rubbing it in that they all still had theirs. Smithy updates Ara and asks where she'd go if she was thinking about her dad. Ara doesn't know because she's quiet, but she suggests the cemetery or the river where they threw flowers in for him.
The prosecution call one of the victims of trafficking, Zemar, and ask him to identify his stolen property. He tells them that it - a ring - was removed from him in Holland by Babur the driver. It was found in the boot of Jason Devlin's car. He would get his ring back by working but he claims he doesn't know for who - despite what he said in his statement. Neil and Jack look worried. The defence pulls out a rng from her pocket and hands it to an usher, asking if it's Zemar's ring. He says yes. She does the same with another ring that is the same and he says yes. She says they're 10 a penny in the markets of Kabul and it's not rare. She suggests that the ring found in Devlin's boot could also not be the same ring. Zemar admits it could be any of them or perhaps none of them, He's been gotten to by the Devlin's.
CCTV shows Jala willingly getting into a car that has been spotted on the Longbridge Estate by ANPR. Rachel authorises Smithy to take as many people as he can down there to find her. "No pressure!" Stuart The Dick shouts after him. They force entry into the home it is outside. The mother panics and grabs her children, whimpering in a foreign tongue. Smithy tries to explain it's alright and shows them a picture of Jala. Before he can say anything the little girl cries out Jala's name happily. Tony finds her coat in the front room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack has to tell the judge about Jala's disappearance and that they think it's a message to Hassiq to keep him quiet. The judge asks why and the defence barrister has to admit there's a problem with disclosure and he can't tell him. The judge tells him to get over the disclosure problem or there'll be no extra time. He hopes the child is found for her sake but claims it has no bearing on proceedings as things stand. If Hassiq still refuses to give evidence then the judge shall withdraw the trafficking charge. Jack tells Neil there'll be no delay if Hassiq refuses and the charge will be removed. He insists they've likely got the girl, they've got to Zemar and he wouldn't be surprised if they had the judge in their pocket too.
Smithy explains to Rachel that the woman they've brought in was granted leave to remain a few years previous but the children's father was killed for deserting Afghanistan's army. In interview the woman claims via Sammy the interpreter that it was her daughter who brought the coat home. Smithy gets Sammy to explain that Jala is in danger. She won't be drawn further. Smithy asks Ara to speak to her and explain that the only way to get through it is to stick together and she won't have to be so scared. He says if it happens to Ara it could happen to the women's children and that Hassiq is trying to stand up for their community and release the stranglehold the Devlin's have.
Stevie gives her evidence, explaining that she was escorting Devlin for his own safety after he'd enforced surprise evictions on an angry estate. They found two teenagers attacking his car and he chased the teenagers away before checking his boot. She spotted a holdall in the boot that matched the description that Babur, the driver of the lorry had run away with. Devlin assaulted her to stop her looking in it to see if it was the same one and kicked her unconscious on the ground. He asks why it was so important for her to look int he bag and she explains that if the jewellery was inside it would imply a chain of command - for example Babur removed it and then would pass it to the boss - Jason Devlin. The defence protests it's conjecture and he's advised to stick to fact so he does:
Did Devlin let her look at the bag? No.
Did Devlin kick her unconcious? Yes.
Was the jewellery taken forcibly from people illegally trafficked into the UK found in the bag? Yes.
No further questions.
Ara speaks to the woman 'alone' with Callum and Smithy in the viewing area alongside Sammy. Sammy explains that the woman is saying she doesn't understand any of it and doesn't know where Jala is. Ara accuses her of protecting the kidnapper and thrusts her against the door. Smithy and Callum force the door open and manage to get in, separating them. Ara tells Smithy that the woman said nothing because she's scared for herself.
The defence barrister insists that Stevie is remembering wrong, Devlin acted in self defence only and that there was no holdall in his boot. She claims it was a rollercoaster of an emotional day. She had to look after Jala who had seen her father die, she had to support the mans greiving sister as she identified the body. It would have been very emotional. She suggests she blamed Devlin when it all got too much, despite there being no evidence to support her claim. She says Smithy said 'it was your fault!' to him and Stevie explains that Smithy was meaning the riot was his fault in reaction to his evictions. The barrister goes on to tell the jury that Smithy and Stevie are close and the case had become personal for them. She claims the evidence was dreamt up and was embellished by them together - the judge tells her off for attacking the character of the witness. She's asked if she and Smithy are having a relationship and then if they have feelings for each other. She says no to each. The barrister asks if he has feelings for her and Stevie suggests she'd have to ask Smithy.
"Isn't it true that Sgt Smith shot someone to protect you?" The prosecution barrister leaps to his feet to call an objection. The judge allows it and says it's relevant so Stevie has to explain that there were 14 other people also in danger. "Answer the question, did Sgt Smith shoot someone?" "Yes, in the line of duty" (he was also in CO19 fgs!) and admits that the man did die - but for some stupid reason does not quickly add 'he was holding a machine gun he was about to discharge into a pub full of innocent people'. Even if the jury would be told to dismiss it. The defence asks again if Sgt Smith shot someone to save her. Stevie repeats that she was one of a number of people and adds this time that Smithy didn't even know she was there. "But you were there, you were one of the people he acted to protect." and then speaks to the jury like it's all because he's in love with Stevie and that he then attacked Jason Devlin because Stevie was hurt. I mean, the man also protected Cutler and Gatting's lives - both men who had held guns pointed at him with a legitimate threat to kill him at least three times off the top of my head! She says that her witness will tell them how Smithy reacted in response to seeing Stevie hurt when they give their evidence. Stevie says she knows Smithy did not assault Devlin or plant the evidence. The barrister asks how given she was assaulted. "Because I know the man." she says firmly. "Exactly." The barrister smiles, going on to claim that the case is nothing more than a vendetta dreamed up by two police officers with an intimate and personal knowledge of each other. Devlin Senior smirks across at Neil and Jack.
Smithy is called to attend court by the prosecution so Callum takes over with Ara. Ara says she doesn't recognise the car Jala gets into and she doesn't know how as she's with her auntie if she's not at school. She avoids talking about real emotional things as she's not ready to deal with the pain that brings. She's a very quiet girl. She sings a rude folk song that she learnt in the lorry that was taught to her by one of the other men in the lorry. He promised he'd take her to meet the queen and that there were trains that ran underground and shops as big as palaces. She doesn't know his name however... but it could be him that Jala got into the car to see. Callum wonders if it's Zemar - or linked to him - and he asks Leon to check to see how he arrived to court It's the same car! He asks Ben to go to his flat.
Rachel tells Smithy he has to deny he's in a relationship with Stevie. "... I'm what?" he blinks, his face a picture. Jack advises him to strip the emotion away from the case, keep measured, keep to the facts and nail the case. The prosecution opens by asking Smithy if he is in a relationship with Stevie, if he ever has been and if he has any special feelings towards her. He answers no to all. "No further questions, your honour."
Callum asks the woman where Zemar took the girl - he tells her they know he came to her house with her and then returned for her later so where has he taken her? She tells him that he is a good man who has a daughter the same age. He took Jala there to meet the children and then went to do an errand (or really appear in court.) Then he took her somewhere secret 'where time begins and ends'. Tony suggests the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
The defense barrister claims Smithy and Stevie cooked up the entire thing against Devlin themselves after they took Ara to identify her brothers body. Smithy explains his training, experience and professionalism meant he wasn't emotionally involved like she has been making out. She claims Smithy doesn't like Jason Devlin and he says he neither likes nor dislikes him. She claims he assaulted him when releasing him from the station. He explains he held his arm whilst escorting him out. She classes that as assault and Smithy points out that he made no complaint. She smiles and says he has now and that there is a witness, Mr Eshan who will explain how Smithy "punched and kick-" she starts to say before she's told off again and told Mr Eshan can give his own account of what he witnessed. For an expensive barrister she's not much good! It's like she got her training in the playground. Her entire case is Groundhog Day. "You love your friend!." "No I don't!" "Yes you do!"
She claims Stevie was lying about spotting the bag in the car boot because Smithy hadn't yet put it there. Smithy says that's not true. She asks if they had any evidence prior to this and he admits they didn't and they were working to find it. She suggests his very limited line was that they needed evidence so he made sure they found it. Smithy explains that - like in every police case - they have a suspect and then search for the evidence to prove or disprove that. She suggests that they find the suspect they want and then fit the evidence to frame that person. Smithy says that's not what he said or what happened. She says he held him responsible for the trafficking, the assault on 'his lady friend' and handling the stolen property. Smithy says yes and that was because of the evidence. She tells Smithy he has form of becoming too emotionally involved and brings up Kieran Wallace.
Callum spots Zemar's car in the carpark of the observatory and gets Tony to stop. Within seconds they spot Jala with Zemar. He sees the officers and grips her arm, trying to make a run for it.
The prosecution barrister explains that the constant bringing up of Kieran Wallace and his death is irrelevant as it's a different case and different circumstances. The defence barrister insists that the common denominator in both is Smithy using deadly force. Smithy speaks directly to the judge and says he'd like to properly explain what happened with Kieran Wallace. He pointed out that Kieran was a known criminal armed with a machine gun that he was about to use in a public place. The defence try to cut in and say that they're talking about his motivation and Smithy cuts over her. "My motivation was to protect the public using my training as a firearms officer." he goes on to explain that he identified himself as a police officer to Kieran and ordered him to lay down his weapon. Kieran refused and aimed to fire at him. Smithy only shot when he had to with the knowledge that the people behind him were not in danger. "You're insinuating that my professionalism was in doubt. Read the report. It's not."
Tony approaches Jala and Zemar to talk and manages to get Zemar to hand Jala over. Callum asks Tony what happened whilst Mel takes Jala and Leon and Ben arrest Zemar. Tony tells Callum that the Devlin's offered a whole years wages to do one day of work for them and that he was desperate as he's about to be deported so agreed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The defence barrister claims there's a parallel - Smithy decided people were in danger so he acted. He decided Stevie was in danger so he acted (It's almost as though - shock horror - he's a policeman!🙄) Smithy points out he wasn't there when Stevie was attacked "But you were there to give first aid to Jason Devlin, to get his blood on your clothes and your DNA on him." Smithy calmly says he arrived moments later. "Milliseconds." the barrister drawls before asking if he was that quick, how did he not see the attack on Stevie. She insists he did and that his 'relationship' with Stevie meant that he lashed out and attacked Devlin. "We're trained to do this, day in day out. I'm not saying we don't feel anything, what i'm saying is that training is the difference between what we feel and what we do." Smithy insists he didn't attack him and he didn't put anything in his vehicle. "YOU'RE A LIAR!" Devlin shouts from the dock. He's told to stay quiet or he'll be removed. The defence brief continues, saying it beggars belief that he could blame Devlin for the 2 bodies and then see his friend attacked and not react in a violent way. She finds that unimaginable "That's why I'm a police officer and you're not." Smithy says calmly - to murmurs of amusement and agreement from the gallery and jury. Neither the defence or prosecution have any further questions so Smithy steps down. Jason hisses at Smithy that he's a liar. Smithy just looks flatly at him before leaving.
Matthew Devlin leaves the room for a breath of fresh air but is stopped in the waiting area and arrested by Callum for conspiracy to kidnap and witness intimidation. He smirks and insist that he knows nothing about what he's talking about but the mask slips when Khaleed Hassiq is called and he stands up, coldly eyeing Devlin Senior as he passes him on his way into the courtroom. Jason looks unnerved as Hassiq enters the room and swears on the bible. He stands up and meekly says 'I'd like to change my plea."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The prosecution brief claims there must be something in Hassiq's evidence that they don't want made public or put on record. Perhaps people they've cheated/bought or someone they're protecting. Either way - they've got the result they wanted. Stevie tells Smithy to cheer up because they've got the result they wanted. "You did it." "Did I?" "Yes, you did!" she smiles.
Tumblr media
Rachel tells Heaton she's thought about his offer and she's decided that yes, she will go with him. He also takes Kezia and Stuart. Rachel says they're great officers and he tells her that she's the best person to lead the team. Blah. All four of them will not be missed.*
Stevie goes and finds Smithy after, inviting him for a drink to celebrate the fact they're not an item. "Cor dear, that would have really messed things up if we were wouldn't it!" Stevie laughs. Smithy agrees to go for a pint and says it'll probably end up being several! Jack approaches and tells Smithy he doesn't appreciate him bringing Ara to court. Smithy says she'd have arrived anyway. Jack just nods and says he appreciates a man of principal. "I've heard that Rachel is leaving. Do you want her job?" Smithy does a literal double take. "... Just like that?" "If you want it." "Why me?" "Because I trust you, especially after today." "Ok, yeah..." (I have mixed feelings about this, I'm happy because obv he's been trained and moulded by Gina and he's a good man and it's for the greater good (and it also means Rachel has gone)but also they totally ignore the fact that Smithy still broke the law twice - the assault and perjuring himself in court. It being Smithy, he'd be eaten up by it as he was through the fight with Callum, when he tried to confess and also when they showed him still hearing the screams of the people in the lorry or having flashbacks. He wouldn't immediately feel like he deserved a promotion off the top of it. The only acknowledgement in the entire final episode of Conviction was flashbacks when he was in the locker room. It could have been a more involved and rounded story if it was taken into consideration and if he'd shown further remorse and struggling to align his job and his guilt but I guess they wanted to move on quickly and forget the naughty side ever happened! Especially as the next episode has Callum accused of chasing a suspect into the traffic only for him to be killed by a vehicle so they didn't want both brooding.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Callum is waiting outside for Smithy and tells him that Devlin Senior is being processed. "You did it then?" he says to Smithy. "...What do you want, Callum?" "Nothing." "Good." Callum tries to make a joke of it saying that it's his caring sharing moment but he's not very good at it. "We walk a hard line and it hardens your soul... I mean it, it does. I've worked with people so cold they may as well be dead inside. Things are going to be different for you now, yeah, but you're not there... you're not even close." "So why does this feel like a defeat then?" "Because it has to. If there wasn't a price then we wouldn't know we'd learnt something." (in my opinion THIS is where Smithy's offer of promotion should have been - after that chat).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*On reflection it's a pretty large clearout before the reboot and the change to 1 episode a week when added together with Sam leaving a couple of episodes before the first Conviction episode and Diane returning for one episode to round off Kaye's contract.* Tony, Sally and Millie are due to leave before the series finishes so that's 9 characters in roughly half a series/year.
Other than Kirsty there are no new officers taken on (not counting Lisa Kennedy as she was a guest for 7 eps). Noone new arrived full stop in series 25 but there are a series of shufflings with Smithy becoming Inspector, Jack finally becoming Superintendent, Will becoming a full DC, Stevie becoming a DS and finally Jo transfering from CID to Uniform within a few episodes of the rebooted S26.
If interested, the last new officer before Kirsty (18th February 2010) was Rachel Weston who arrived 6th August 2008) Poor Sarah, her first appearance on screen was literally 5 weeks before it was announced that the show had been cancelled! She'd have only arrived around Nov/Dec 09 - she got all of 6/7 months on the show when filming stopped on the 15th June 10!
*Old Habits was shot as a 2 parter for Diane to return as a Sergeant but ITV's changes for the reboot meant that they needed to reduce the size of the cast and new scenes were shot to explain Diane moving to Barton St and just returning for one night to get her eye back in after her promotion when she had been working a bit more up north. It did seem odd to have her return for a night so does make sense, but poor Kaye! It was announced in the press on the 22nd January 2009 and Old Habits aired 30th April so would have been being filmed around/just before the announcement so at least there shouldn't have been too much filmed of other eps to have to re-do/edit/re-write. What a welcome back from maternity leave though! "You're going to be a sergeant... ah, you've lost your job."

Tumblr media
Short story!!
@tmntaucompetition @littlemissartemisia
Prev || Next
Claire was getting sick and tired of it all. Chasing after a little science lab brat like Artemisia was proving to be more difficult than she'd first expected it to be. The annoying little kid could dimension hop, and Claire was becoming exhausted trying to keep up with her. She kept leaping from one universe to the other, one world after the next. Claire kept after her, but Misa always seemed one step ahead. And even beyond that, she made allies everywhere she went! She had every advantage, meanwhile Claire felt shortchanged at every turn.
And now this whole competition. Claire had hoped that something like this would be easier for her. She'd had a look around, and this dimension or whatever it was seemed different than the others -- it wasn't a full world like the rest, it appeared that there was only the compound and arena, nothing more and nothing beyond. There were no windows, no exits, just a series of halls and corridors and lanes and stadiums that looped in on each other and curved back to the start. There were some apartment rooms you could access, but even those seemed closed off from the outside. Claire had a sneaking suspicion that there was no "outside". Good, that would make escape difficult for the little mutant, and capturing her would only be a matter of time. She was already past her deadline, and the hunt for her lost experiment was bordering on obsession by this point. She was exhausted, tired, the light was slowly going out. It felt hopeless. But she couldn't give up now, not when she was so close! She'd donned a disguise to hide her face at first, hoping that would help. Sure, the bird mask and hooded cloak were a bit shady, but Claire loved the dramatics. Of course, most people refused to help someone who looked like they were cosplaying the guy from the neighborhood watch sign. Most folks turned her away, some redirected her on wild goose chases, one even tricked her into getting gassed with hallucinogens that made her see her worst fears! She'd eventually (and reluctantly) given the disguise up, and tried again. Still, he failed. Over and over and over and over again. And again. And again. This was getting ridiculous. She would never... find... her?
No way.
No WAY!!
It was her! That irritating little mutant was standing right over THERE, along with several other mutant turtle tots, and one grown one that was talking angrily on the phone while the children played behind him. It couldn't be this easy... could it? Claire snuck closer and closer to the group. She hid behind pillars, watching them carefully. There was a chubby child that kept hugging a slider turtle, and a very messy turtle that seemed the same age as Misa, who was playing with splattered ketchup and potatoes on the floor. Artemisia was dancing after a butterfly that had distracted her, chasing it around the group and slowly distancing from them as she went after it. The teenager in purple turned his back to them all.
It was now or never.
Claire rushed forwards, grabbed Misa, and dashed away.
The little girl started screaming and crying in her arms, kicking furiously as Claire made her escape. With one arm, she pressed her into her chest; with the other she held her head in place. She wasn't going to get bitten again, she'd learned her lesson from before... The children immediately started crying, the fat one sobbing and scrambling closer to the grownup, catching his attention. The messy one was stunned for a moment, confused as to what had happened. The third immediately gave chase.
"MISA!!!" he shouted, running after Claire as fast as he could.
She turned her head to watch as the kid sped up behind her. Dang, he was fast! He couldn't be any older than 7, maybe even younger! But he ran like the wind, jumping up and pouncing on her back. Claire was knocked to the ground, poor Misa was pinned beneath her.
"Get off of me!" Claire yelled, slapping behind her as she tried to stand up.
"LET GO OF MY SISTER!!" Leo screamed, punching and kicking and slapping and clawing at Claire, even pulling her hair as he fought against her.
Misa managed to crawl out from under her chest, crying and screeching as she ran back to the others. Leon continued his assaults, doing as much damage as a six year old could do, scratching and swiping at her and shouting as loudly as he could. Claire kicked him in the back, scrambling out from under him and letting him fall to the floor behind her as she ran away before the grown up could come after her, too. They were more concerned with Misa and Leo, checking them to see if they were terribly injured.
Claire kept going until she was certain they weren't following her. She darted behind a corner and stopped to catch her breath. This was intolerable! How was she expected to get that atrocious little turtle mutant back if she was constantly outnumbered and surrounded by other mutants?! This was impossible! She couldn't even fight against a tot! How was she supposed to do this?
"Perhaps I can help."
Claire whirled around, looking for where the ominous voice had come from. She couldn't see anyone. She felt something tapping against her foot. Looking down, she saw a disembodied hand, the same one that had spored her before. She screamed, and stomped her foot onto it, hoping to destroy whatever demonic thing it was. It vanished beneath her heel.
"Please, there's no need for such emotional reactions," the Hand.PNG said as it crawled out from a shadow behind her. "I simply wanted to offer my services."
"What... what are you?" Claire asked, stepping away skeptically.
"A prompter, if you will. My purpose is to drive the story forwards. In this instance, YOUR story."
"And how would you expect to do that?"
"Simple. How would you like to recapture not only Artemisia, but four extra turtle specimens?"
"How am I supposed to do that when I can't even catch one turtle tot?"
"Patience, dear one. I have a plan. You will have an ally soon, I simply need to change his perspective... as for you, you must contact your 'associate' and invite him to come here, he will be integral to the plan."
Claire glanced back at the hall she'd just run down, as if she could look back and see the turtle she'd lost again through the crowds. She would do practically anything to get her back, and these scratches across her arms and back and the rips in her fading hair were proof of this.
"...Am I to understand that you are promising to capture Artemisa for me?"
"Oh, heavens no, I wouldn't ever dream of doing such a thing! But I can tell you how it can be accomplished. This is your story, not mine. And you won't get just one, you'll get them all."
"I don't need them all, I just want the one."
"Understandable, but what would you do if Misa were to escape again? Who would you use for your studies and experiments? And in any case, if they should be caught together she will be far less likely to leave them. It would be better for you to take them all, wouldn't you agree?"
Claire grinned wide.
"What did you have in mind?"

meeting lando's girlfriend wasn't something she saw coming this summer. and maybe it's selfish thinking, but he said he'd wait for her. she doesn't expect anyone to wait for her, she doesn't even want to push that idea on any of them. but just as she's beginning to figure out what her feelings mean, just as she's figuring out what happiness and love feels like, she loses another one.
luisa is really sweet, a kind and beautiful girl. but that only makes things worse. she's beautiful. stunning. the talk with lando wasn't long, because there was nothing more to talk about. he didn't want to wait any longer and he found someone to make him feel the happiness and joy addi couldn't, he deserves that.
"i'm sorry, but it just happened" was all lando got out before luisa walked over with a shining smile and introduced herself. she can't blame lando for anything, especially because it's been so long and she's still confused about everything. "what were you going to tell me, add?" he questioned with his hand on luisa's hip. her eye lingers there for a second before she looks back at him, "oh, nothing. i mean- it's kinda... private."
luisa looks regretful before immediately stepping back, "oh! i'm so sorry! i can-"
"oh no, it's okay!" addi lets out a kind laugh, stopping the older, "i can tell him over text, it's nothing too important!" she smiles, good thing her parents put her in acting classes when she was young. "it was nice meeting you!" the girls hug, lando smiles thinking all is good, which technically, it was. but she felt like she was dying inside.
after that she couldn't think right. she drove her car to wherever the night took her. her legs were moving faster than her brain as she made her way out of the car. she knows she shouldn't. she knows she should go home and get some sleep, talk to charlotte or claire, maybe get tipsy, but her body never listened to a thing her brain said. she walked up to the door, knocking on it before it swung open to show a concerned face and a topless torso.
"you alright?" he asked, she nodded quickly.
"can i come in? please?"
"of course."

Conviction - Part 2 - To The Limit
Max and Stevie attend the scene the next morning when the fire is finally out. Sally reports a witness spotted a woman matching Abbie's description running away the time the fire started. The only one hurt in the fire was the barman, Pete, who lives above in one of the flats.
Tumblr media
Men! Genuinely think Chris was about to laugh & had to hide his face 😂😂 (also she clearly hasn't done much in a pristine white top 😉)
Officer White Top tells them traces of accelerant were found on the stairs and in other places - most likely petrol. Whoever set it seemed intent on getting the flat and bar. Stevie jibes all three men for having their tongues out in the presence of Officer White Top.
Smithy and Callum attend the hospital and tell Pete that the fire was lit on purpose. He tells them that he doesn't know much about the big boss, Matthew Devlin, but his son has a history of rubbing people up the wrong way and is proud of the fact that no one likes him. Pete claims he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and that he knows of no reason why anyone would target him.
Matthew Devlin attends the station. Max tells him the bar is a crime scene and there'll be no entry until they finish. Devlin Snr says he was at home at the time of the fire and was entertaining guests, including a councillor if they need proof. Devlin Jnr was not present, he was at a party in Kent and is still travelling back. He'll help anyway he can because they are the victims and he expects to be treated as such. He walks into Smithy and Callum as he leaves. Callum doesn't move as the two men stare at each other, though Smithy steps to the side. "If looks could kill..." Stevie smirks. "Yeah... he doesn't like us does he..." Stevie's smirk grows. "I was talking about you!" She tells Callum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eddie is not impressed with the fire investigation crew pulling down the ceiling onto his 'nice clean crime scene!' but he changes his tune when he spots Officer White Top and flirts up a storm. (Stevie: "Is there a woman with a heartbeat Eddie hasn't cracked onto?" Max: "Actually... he's never hit on you, has he?") Both he and Officer White Top seem to now think the accelerant on the stairs could be a run off from what was poured outside the flat. Perhaps it was Pete and the flat that were the targets?
Tumblr media
The bouncer who lives next door to Pete, Carl Fox, arrives at the cordon and tells them he'd stayed at his girlfriends the night before. Sally arrives with the CCTV that shows the blonde who matched Abbie's description running away from the bar was infact... Abbie!
Smithy reminds Callum the Devlin's are the victims until they get evidence to the contrary they have to treat them as such, as much as it pisses both of them off. They spot Abbie outside the hospital, she yelps when Smithy takes her arm and it's revealed that she has burns. Later they tell her they have her running away from the fire on CCTV and that the FME has confirmed she has second degree burns. She admits that she was there but denies starting it. She got the burns trying to get up the stairs to alert Pete. She admits that she and Pete are good friends and begs them not to tell Devlin. Smithy asks her how she's going to explain the burns and she says she'll tell Devlin that she went to the bar to look for him and that despite appearances Jason does look after her and pays the rent for her flat but she can't help her feelings for Pete and she admits being terrified of Jason.
Pete tells Smithy and Callum that he and Abbie have been seeing each other for a couple of months and that Jason treats her like a slave and knocks her around. He's saving up to get them both away somewhere safe. He says he didn't lie earlier, he's just taking every opportunity to stop Jason from finding out. Smithy floats the idea that he might already know given it seems the flat could have been the target and the rest accidental.
Callum and Max attend Devlin's flat now he's returned from Kent. "I can't wait to see the look on Devlin's face." Callum says. "You're an evil man!" Devlin is not happy to see them. "This is just about the fire, Mr Devlin." Max tells him. "I'm shocked you think it could be about anything else!" Callum adds, in a tone that suggests he is not at all shocked. Devlin says he was at a party miles away with many witnesses, he doesn't know who it was, he didn't start it and he has many enemies who could. Callum asks when he heard about it and he says that morning as his phone was switched off. He's heard Pete was hurt but his dad told him that he's alright and he hasn't spoken to Abbie. Max tells him that Abbie hurt herself trying to get into the bar looking for him. He admits he didn't tell her he'd be away all night. He attends the station to pick her up and calls her a 'silly cow' and to use the phone if she doesn't know where he is or to call his dad. How romantic and caring of him. His act is enough to prove that he doesn't know about her affair with Pete.
Eddie reports that he found coke on Pete's bedside table and that his bedroom door was almost kicked in before the fire brigade arrived. He's also found some forged European documents with an imperfection that matches other forgeries he's found floating around lately. It raises suspicions Abbie might not be an illegal immigrant.
Pete claims he knows nothing about the forged documents or the door. Callum threatens to tell Devlin but Pete can tell from Ben's reaction that Callum is bluffing. He tells him to nick him if he suspects him. Callum choses to place him under observation instead.
A printer admits that the Devlin's owe him over £1000 but insists he didn't set the fire as they've always paid up in the past. He tells them he knows they have dodgy businesses but won't be drawn into what they are. "You're the detectives... detect." Mickey finds out that they're landlords but there are no names of tenants on a list of creditors that Matthew Devlin handed over that morning so it's definitely something they don't want to advertise. He visits the nearest one with Smithy. It's not exactly high class living and the smell is horrendous. It's an illegal house of multiple occupancy and filled with most likely illegal immigrants who are terrified. There appear to be approximately 30 people living in the house if not more. Smithy reports it to the council. The house is a death trap with bare electrics, no working fire alarms and fire exits blocked up with stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben and Callum follow Pete to Abi's and can tell from his body language that something isn't right. He enters and immediately runs out. They enter the house and find Abbie unconscious and beaten. Pete accuses him of telling Devlin and tells Rachel that he wants to make a formal complaint. Ben tells Rachel he heard nothing threatening said by Callum and she clearly doesn't believe him.
Smithy is furious when he hears and accuses Callum of trying to force the result or even telling Jason. He insists he's done nothing wrong, even when Smithy points out that Abbie and Pete were their best bets to getting information about the Devlin's and their empire. Stevie calms the men down and airs something that has been bothering her... what if it wasn't Jason who attacked Abbie? Stevie has found out there is no record of her entering the country legally.
Unfortunately despite the inhospitable conditions of the house, there's no law against renting to illegal immigrants so without one of them talking out against the Devlin's they can't prosecute them for it. Max suggests it could be one of the tenants who set the fire which opens up a huge amount of suspects. It does also add weight to the Devlin's being behind the forged documents however given they have their own captive market in at least one of their properties.
Smithy and Stevie attend Matthew's house and ask him where he was when Abbie was attacked. He tries to storm out but his father makes him stay and answer the questions. Devlin Snr tells his son that Abbie has been cheating with Pete and that is why they're asking all the questions. Jason is clearly shocked and growls to his dad that he'll kill her. Matthew tells him he'd told him she'd bring trouble to their door but he's now going to stay away from her. Smithy urges him to listen to his father. Stevie asks how Matthew knows and he tells them he saw them and to now focus on finding who set fire to the bar. Smithy tells him it was likely one of the tenants. Matthew claims he knew nothing about them being illegal and that it's them who 'imported half their village to live with them' and he knew nothing about it.
Max, Smithy and Stevie go to Abbie's flat to see if Eddie has found anymore information. He's found more than that - in the extra act of cruelty in pulling the phone line out the wall to stop Abbie calling for help after her beating, her attacker has left behind a partial print in her blood. Stevie offers to buy him a drink to congratulate him and he tells her he appreciates and loves her but she's 'not his type', much to the amusement of Max and Smithy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smithy apologises to Callum for accusing him of telling Jason. Rachel takes Callum into her office and tells him she's going to ask Pete to withdraw his complaint. She's disappointed that it happened in the first place. She allows him to work the case again but tells him to stay away from Pete and Abbie.
St Hugh's call and let the officers know that Abbie has regained consciousness and will be able to talk soon. Stevie's unsure if she'd want to but Max says she must if she wants her attacker caught now Jason is out of the frame but aware of her and Pete's relationship. Eddie has a match on the partial print from Gollum lookalike, Donny Blake. Mickey has history with him and says he's a nasty piece of work with a large amount of violent offences in his back catalogue as well as dealing. He has no known links to the Devlin's.
Abbie refuses to talk to Smithy and Stevie so they tell her what they know and suspect. They know she's there illegally, they know it was Donny Blake who did it, they know he's a violent drug dealer and the fact that she and Pete are trying to raise money to leave together suggests that they made some sort of deal with him that has fallen through. They think the forged documents they found are hers and that it was Blake who set the fire and tried to break into the flat. Smithy says without cooperation they'll have to arrest her and hand her over to immigration. Abbie finally talks, admitting that Donny did a deal with Pete to get drugs on credit. He would sell them through the bar, pay Donny back and keep the profit but the drugs were stolen. She suspects it's Donny trying to double cross them.
Pete tells Smithy and Max the same story in interview and offers to tell them where he got the forged paperwork from AND hand them the Devlin's in return for help. He got the paperwork from a Polish printer - the one Mickey spoke to earlier. Matthew Devlin got in touch with him that afternoon and offered 5K in cash to him and identity paperwork for Abbie to disappear. He said he'd get Donny off their backs too. Pete thinks they're finding her an embarrassment because she's an illegal immigrant. The call came before Donny got to Abbie so as far as Pete is aware the offer still stands.
Max and Smithy take it to Jack who calls a station briefing. He agrees to contact Matthew Devlin as part of a sting and agree to meet him at the print shop. At the same time, Callum will lead a search on Donny Blake's house with TSG and uniform. They've had a tip off that he's likely to try flush the drugs so they are not taking any chances. Donny does indeed try to flush them so they break the water pipe and are waiting with a black bag to catch the rest. Ben and Callum manage to overpower him and Sally arrests his girlfriend.
At the print shop carpark it's Jason who arrives instead of Matthew. Max thinks it's a bad sign but Smithy reckons it could work to their advantage as it's natural Pete would be nervous around him after sleeping with his girlfriend. They watch Jason push a package at Pete and pull his wallet out before charging over. The package is menu's and the money is £300. Jason claims he's paying him outstanding wages because he wants rid of him and that he knows nothing about any other deal. He literally laughs in a furious Smithy's face. At the station, Carl - the bouncer - is waiting with Matthew Devlin. It fits into place - Carl tipped them off as he was with Pete when he visited Abbie and found Smithy and Stevie there.
In interview, Matthew Devlin reads a short statement he prepared with his solicitor. It reads that he found out about the affair and asked Carl to keep an eye on Pete. Carl reported back that Pete was planning a drug deal. The Devlin's did not want that on their premises. They asked Carl to report it to the police but he didn't as he couldn't verify the information. They realised that afternoon that the fire was likely linked to Pete's activities and came forward at the earliest of opportunities. He admits Jason is a loose cannon and that he went to the print shop to meet Pete to look him in the eye after he'd been lying to him and sleeping with his girlfriend. If Pete has told them that he was being bought off with offers of cash and documents then it is a vicious smear. They met at the print shop so he could pay the printer the outstanding invoice and collect the menus. Smithy calls him out for lying and that they used the printer for forged documents and wanted rid of Abbie for fear she might know something damaging to them. He simply shrugs and points out that Abbie is an illegal immigrant who has been dealing with hard drugs and is a known liar - making out that they'd lied about the 5K and documents. "Who's going to believe anything she has to say?"
Callum reports that Abbie was right, they found Pete's holdall in Donny's flat and they've brought him in. Max and Smithy don't have any good news. Matthew has an answer for everything even if it's rubbish. Max points out they have an ace up their sleeve - the printer.
The printer claims morally he's done nothing wrong. His grandfather created false documents during the war for the Resistance and refugees. He saved lives and so is he - he only produces paperwork for people who are desperate to get away from the likes of the Devlin's - he does NOT sell them to the Devlin's and that's why they stopped using him and did not pay the invoice because they'd found out. They don't want their illegal immigrants to get paperwork as it means they can move around freely and aren't' forced to pay top whack to stay in their slums.
Mickey feeds this back to the three Sergeants who are fuming they have nothing to prosecute the Devlin's for. At best they have a housing act violation and will be fined. Max takes Abbie to see Pete and they drop the allegation against Callum. Abbie tells them that she tried not to listen to what the Devlin's said as she didn't want to know how bad it really was for her.
Devlin tries to wind Smithy up by insisting on an apology when he sees him out of custody. "Dream on." He forces Devlin down the ramp and pushes him away at the bottom before growling 'I need to go wash my hands." Devlin smirks and nods at the camera, insinuating he's going to report him. Smithy isn't bothered in the slightest, squaring up to him at the bottom of the ramp with a low growl 'I'll be seeing you around.' as Callum watches from the top of the ramp. Devlin blows him a kiss and walks off.
Smithy turns and sees Callum. "Got a knack of getting under your skin, don't they." Callum smirks. "What's this? Your way of suggesting I'm no better than you?" Smithy glares. "Who knows what any of us are capable of given the right circumstances?" "I know what the line is, whatever the circumstances." "Do ya?" Callum ponders.
Me thinks it might be a rather prophetic conversation almost, boys...

Miss Americana
Now playing: You’re On Your Own, Kid
C/W: Mentions of abuse, violence, ellusions to rape, Marshal is a perv, misogyny/sexism, angst, Goose has no idea how to Scottish slang. As always, italics in “” depict Norwegian.
A/N: Things are getting juicy! I’m really falling in love with Evelyne’s story now, and I’m the one writing it lmao. Constructive criticism is always welcomed in a positive way. I’m sensitive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s dark; the house is quiet. Evelyne squints into the darkness. Her clock says it’s 3am. It’s only been a few hours since her fight with her father. She rolls out of her bed and makes her way down the hall. Andrews door is shut, when she tries the handle, it’s locked. “Lorris?” She calls out to him, hopefully the nickname will make him open the door.
To her luck, he does. The door practically rips off its hinges from his anger. Andrew glares at her, the same look, she realizes, that he gives their dad.
“The fuck you want, Evelyne?”
“Are…are you okay? I know Marshall was pretty harsh this time.” Her cheek still stings from the slap she received, and she can only imagine how her brother feels. He huffs, rolling his eyes at her.
“You’ve taken it too far with this Scottish boy, Evelyne. I’m not covering for you anymore.” “But you said-”
“Doesn’t matter! This is your problem, not mine!”
He turns to go back into his room, leaving Evelyne there in shock. Andrew stops and looks at her one last time.
“Oh, and another thing, Marshall knows there isn’t a ‘Malic Greene’ in your class.” Then the door slams in her face, making her flinch.
“You’re on your own, kid. You always have been.”
Tumblr media
“Lass?”
Evelyne blinks at him, her curls matted to her face from the rain. She barely remembers how she got here. She’s still in her pajamas; an old nirvana shirt and cotton sleep shorts. She didn’t even put on shoes in her desperation to get to him. Falling into his arms, she sobs out a single word. “Johnny,”
He pulls her into the house. She’s never done this; shown up at his Aunts house at the crack-ass of dawn. John bombards her with questions. What happened? Are you okay, lass? Evelyne doesn’t respond to any, only sobs. God, she feels so stupid. The more she gets Johnny involved with her, the more she puts him at risk of Marshal’s wrath. The roses were bad enough. It’s not until John pulls her away from his shoulder, tucking stray curls behind her ears with a gentleness she’s never felt, that Evelyne realizes what she has to do. She stares into the sea of blue that is her boys’ eyes. “I can’t keep doing this, Johnny.”
“Doing wha’?”
She shakes her head. Please, she begs, don’t make me say this. Evelyne thinks that God may just be on her side when Johnny’s eyes widen. The pair stare at each other for a beat in silence. And then-
“Come with me.” “What?”
“To Scotland. Come back home with me, to Scotland.”
“John you know I can’t do that! What- what about Nellie and Claire? I can’t just leave them alone. With him!”
“So yer just gonna let him beat ya to death?”
“To protect them? Yes!”
Johnny purses his lips, thinking. “Just, just try, for me lass. I leave tomorrow night; come with me,” He grabs her hands, bringing them up to his chest. “Please.”
Holy hell. When did he have the time to pick up Norwegian? Evelyne sighs, looking up at him.
“Okay,”
His face lights up.
“Really?”
“Really,”
Johnny’s kisses were always passionate, as was everything the boy did, but Evelyne felt like she was on fire when their lips met. Her hands went to his poorly done buzz cut as his went to her waist. If this is what she was giving London up for, it was worth it. “I’ll run away,”
Tumblr media
London airport is bustling, people rushing to their terminal, to their loved ones, or to a taxi. Evelyne clutches her carry on bag to her chest as walks in the building. Johnny was in Gate C9, where he and his family were waiting for her. She feels nauseous; she’s really doing this. Leaving her family, her childhood, her sisters, behind. She ignores the constant buzzing of her phone in favor of rushing through the airport.
“From sprinklers splashes to fireplace ashes,”
Evelyne confirms for the fifth time that she is, in fact, at Gate C9. The problem? Johnny’s not here. There’s no terrible haircut, no loud Scottish slang. Evelyne’s vision blurs as tears form in her eyes; again.
“I gave my blood, sweat, and tears for this.”
Three hours later, the plane is long gone, and it’s dark outside. Evelyne gathers her bags and makes her way outside. So much for coming home.
Tumblr media
“Where that fuck have you been, girl?!”
“I went for a walk,”
Evelyne makes it two steps before her curls are roughly grabbed. She yelps before falling back. “You don’t do shit without my permission, you hear?!”
She looks at her father. His dark skin has a slight yellow tint to it. His liver must be failing. She can practically taste the shitty beer he drinks. “Yes, sir.”
Marshal looks shocked for a half a second before he smiles and his eyes roam. Evelyne wants to puke. “Good girl. It’s about time you learned.”
He releases his grip on her hair, allowing her to cower away. Evelyne lugs her bags up the stairs and into her room.
“You’re on your own kid,”
The panic starts before she can stop it.
“Yeah you can face this,”
Evelyne rips her stained sheets off her bed, shoving them into her closet.
“You’re on your own kid,”
“You always have been.”

Poll: What dumb way is Chris getting injured today?
Tumblr media
That gif is killing me.
Anyway, in honor of Beat The Shit Out Of Chris Friday (created by @leonisdumbasallhell ), how about a dumb poll to decide how he gets hurt today?
Disclaimer: I love Chris. I'm sure most of us do. But we can send some calamity his way every once in a while... right?
Also, no matter what happens he's going to survive. Because we love him.
