So, let me try and put everything together here, because I really do think it needs to be talked about.
Today, Unity announced that it intends to apply a fee to use its software. Then it got worse.
For those not in the know, Unity is the most popular free to use video game development tool, offering a basic version for individuals who want to learn how to create games or create independently alongside paid versions for corporations or people who want more features. It's decent enough at this job, has issues but for the price point I can't complain, and is the idea entry point into creating in this medium, it's a very important piece of software.
But speaking of tools, the CEO is a massive one. When he was the COO of EA, he advocated for using, what out and out sounds like emotional manipulation to coerce players into microtransactions.
"A consumer gets engaged in a property, they might spend 10, 20, 30, 50 hours on the game and then when they're deep into the game they're well invested in it. We're not gouging, but we're charging and at that point in time the commitment can be pretty high."
He also called game developers who don't discuss monetization early in the planning stages of development, quote, "fucking idiots".
So that sets the stage for what might be one of the most bald-faced greediest moves I've seen from a corporation in a minute. Most at least have the sense of self-preservation to hide it.
A few hours ago, Unity posted this announcement on the official blog.
Effective January 1, 2024, we will introduce a new Unity Runtime Fee that’s based on game installs. We will also add cloud-based asset storage, Unity DevOps tools, and AI at runtime at no extra cost to Unity subscription plans this November. We are introducing a Unity Runtime Fee that is based upon each time a qualifying game is downloaded by an end user. We chose this because each time a game is downloaded, the Unity Runtime is also installed. Also we believe that an initial install-based fee allows creators to keep the ongoing financial gains from player engagement, unlike a revenue share.
Now there are a few red flags to note in this pitch immediately.
Unity is planning on charging a fee on all games which use its engine.
This is a flat fee per number of installs.
They are using an always online runtime function to determine whether a game is downloaded.
There is just so many things wrong with this that it's hard to know where to start, not helped by this FAQ which doubled down on a lot of the major issues people had.
I guess let's start with what people noticed first. Because it's using a system baked into the software itself, Unity would not be differentiating between a "purchase" and a "download". If someone uninstalls and reinstalls a game, that's two downloads. If someone gets a new computer or a new console and downloads a game already purchased from their account, that's two download. If someone pirates the game, the studio will be asked to pay for that download.
Q: How are you going to collect installs? A: We leverage our own proprietary data model. We believe it gives an accurate determination of the number of times the runtime is distributed for a given project. Q: Is software made in unity going to be calling home to unity whenever it's ran, even for enterprice licenses? A: We use a composite model for counting runtime installs that collects data from numerous sources. The Unity Runtime Fee will use data in compliance with GDPR and CCPA. The data being requested is aggregated and is being used for billing purposes. Q: If a user reinstalls/redownloads a game / changes their hardware, will that count as multiple installs? A: Yes. The creator will need to pay for all future installs. The reason is that Unity doesn’t receive end-player information, just aggregate data. Q: What's going to stop us being charged for pirated copies of our games? A: We do already have fraud detection practices in our Ads technology which is solving a similar problem, so we will leverage that know-how as a starting point. We recognize that users will have concerns about this and we will make available a process for them to submit their concerns to our fraud compliance team.
This is potentially related to a new system that will require Unity Personal developers to go online at least once every three days.
Starting in November, Unity Personal users will get a new sign-in and online user experience. Users will need to be signed into the Hub with their Unity ID and connect to the internet to use Unity. If the internet connection is lost, users can continue using Unity for up to 3 days while offline. More details to come, when this change takes effect.
It's unclear whether this requirement will be attached to any and all Unity games, though it would explain how they're theoretically able to track "the number of installs", and why the methodology for tracking these installs is so shit, as we'll discuss later.
Unity claims that it will only leverage this fee to games which surpass a certain threshold of downloads and yearly revenue.
Only games that meet the following thresholds qualify for the Unity Runtime Fee: Unity Personal and Unity Plus: Those that have made $200,000 USD or more in the last 12 months AND have at least 200,000 lifetime game installs. Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise: Those that have made $1,000,000 USD or more in the last 12 months AND have at least 1,000,000 lifetime game installs.
They don't say how they're going to collect information on a game's revenue, likely this is just to say that they're only interested in squeezing larger products (games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Fate Grand Order, Among Us, and Fall Guys) and not every 2 dollar puzzle platformer that drops on Steam. But also, these larger products have the easiest time porting off of Unity and the most incentives to, meaning realistically those heaviest impacted are going to be the ones who just barely meet this threshold, most of them indie developers.
Aggro Crab Games, one of the first to properly break this story, points out that systems like the Xbox Game Pass, which is already pretty predatory towards smaller developers, will quickly inflate their "lifetime game installs" meaning even skimming the threshold of that 200k revenue, will be asked to pay a fee per install, not a percentage on said revenue.
Tumblr media
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Hey Gamers!
Today, Unity (the engine we use to make our games) announced that they'll soon be taking a fee from developers for every copy of the game installed over a certain threshold - regardless of how that copy was obtained.
Guess who has a somewhat highly anticipated game coming to Xbox Game Pass in 2024? That's right, it's us and a lot of other developers.
That means Another Crab's Treasure will be free to install for the 25 million Game Pass subscribers. If a fraction of those users download our game, Unity could take a fee that puts an enormous dent in our income and threatens the sustainability of our business.
And that's before we even think about sales on other platforms, or pirated installs of our game, or even multiple installs by the same user!!!
This decision puts us and countless other studios in a position where we might not be able to justify using Unity for our future titles. If these changes aren't rolled back, we'll be heavily considering abandoning our wealth of Unity expertise we've accumulated over the years and starting from scratch in a new engine. Which is really something we'd rather not do.
On behalf of the dev community, we're calling on Unity to reverse the latest in a string of shortsighted decisions that seem to prioritize shareholders over their product's actual users.
I fucking hate it here.
-Aggro Crab - END DESCRIPTION]
That fee, by the way, is a flat fee. Not a percentage, not a royalty. This means that any games made in Unity expecting any kind of success are heavily incentivized to cost as much as possible.
Tumblr media
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A table listing the various fees by number of Installs over the Install Threshold vs. version of Unity used, ranging from $0.01 to $0.20 per install. END DESCRIPTION]
Basic elementary school math tells us that if a game comes out for $1.99, they will be paying, at maximum, 10% of their revenue to Unity, whereas jacking the price up to $59.99 lowers that percentage to something closer to 0.3%. Obviously any company, especially any company in financial desperation, which a sudden anchor on all your revenue is going to create, is going to choose the latter.
Furthermore, and following the trend of "fuck anyone who doesn't ask for money", Unity helpfully defines what an install is on their main site.
While I'm looking at this page as it exists now, it currently says
The installation and initialization of a game or app on an end user’s device as well as distribution via streaming is considered an “install.” Games or apps with substantially similar content may be counted as one project, with installs then aggregated to calculate the Unity Runtime Fee.
However, I saw a screenshot saying something different, and utilizing the Wayback Machine we can see that this phrasing was changed at some point in the few hours since this announcement went up. Instead, it reads:
The installation and initialization of a game or app on an end user’s device as well as distribution via streaming or web browser is considered an “install.” Games or apps with substantially similar content may be counted as one project, with installs then aggregated to calculate the Unity Runtime Fee.
Screenshot for posterity:
Tumblr media
That would mean web browser games made in Unity would count towards this install threshold. You could legitimately drive the count up simply by continuously refreshing the page. The FAQ, again, doubles down.
Q: Does this affect WebGL and streamed games? A: Games on all platforms are eligible for the fee but will only incur costs if both the install and revenue thresholds are crossed. Installs - which involves initialization of the runtime on a client device - are counted on all platforms the same way (WebGL and streaming included).
And, what I personally consider to be the most suspect claim in this entire debacle, they claim that "lifetime installs" includes installs prior to this change going into effect.
Will this fee apply to games using Unity Runtime that are already on the market on January 1, 2024? Yes, the fee applies to eligible games currently in market that continue to distribute the runtime. We look at a game's lifetime installs to determine eligibility for the runtime fee. Then we bill the runtime fee based on all new installs that occur after January 1, 2024.
Again, again, doubled down in the FAQ.
Q: Are these fees going to apply to games which have been out for years already? If you met the threshold 2 years ago, you'll start owing for any installs monthly from January, no? (in theory). It says they'll use previous installs to determine threshold eligibility & then you'll start owing them for the new ones. A: Yes, assuming the game is eligible and distributing the Unity Runtime then runtime fees will apply. We look at a game's lifetime installs to determine eligibility for the runtime fee. Then we bill the runtime fee based on all new installs that occur after January 1, 2024.
That would involve billing companies for using their software before telling them of the existence of a bill. Holding their actions to a contract that they performed before the contract existed!
Okay. I think that's everything. So far.
There is one thing that I want to mention before ending this post, unfortunately it's a little conspiratorial, but it's so hard to believe that anyone genuinely thought this was a good idea that it's stuck in my brain as a significant possibility.
A few days ago it was reported that Unity's CEO sold 2,000 shares of his own company.
On September 6, 2023, John Riccitiello, President and CEO of Unity Software Inc (NYSE:U), sold 2,000 shares of the company. This move is part of a larger trend for the insider, who over the past year has sold a total of 50,610 shares and purchased none.
I would not be surprised if this decision gets reversed tomorrow, that it was literally only made for the CEO to short his own goddamn company, because I would sooner believe that this whole thing is some idiotic attempt at committing fraud than a real monetization strategy, even knowing how unfathomably greedy these people can be.
So, with all that said, what do we do now?
Well, in all likelihood you won't need to do anything. As I said, some of the biggest names in the industry would be directly affected by this change, and you can bet your bottom dollar that they're not just going to take it lying down. After all, the only way to stop a greedy CEO is with a greedier CEO, right?
(I fucking hate it here.)
And that's not mentioning the indie devs who are already talking about abandoning the engine.
[Links display tweets from the lead developer of Among Us saying it'd be less costly to hire people to move the game off of Unity and Cult of the Lamb's official twitter saying the game won't be available after January 1st in response to the news.]
That being said, I'm still shaken by all this. The fact that Unity is openly willing to go back and punish its developers for ever having used the engine in the past makes me question my relationship to it.
The news has given rise to the visibility of free, open source alternative Godot, which, if you're interested, is likely a better option than Unity at this point. Mostly, though, I just hope we can get out of this whole, fucking, environment where creatives are treated as an endless mill of free profits that's going to be continuously ratcheted up and up to drive unsustainable infinite corporate growth that our entire economy is based on for some fuckin reason.
Anyways, that's that, I find having these big posts that break everything down to be helpful.

Advantages of using the AWS Lab
Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a variety of tools and services to help users develop and deploy their applications. One such tool is the AWS Lab, which is a cloud-based development environment that allows users to easily create, configure, and manage their development and testing environments.
The AWS Lab is built on top of the AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and is integrated with other AWS services such as Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS). This allows users to easily create and configure virtual machines with the necessary resources and configurations for their development and testing needs.
One of the key advantages of using the AWS Lab is that it allows users to quickly spin up and tear down development and testing environments as needed. This can greatly reduce the time and costs associated with setting up and maintaining physical development and testing environments. Additionally, the AWS Lab allows users to easily scale their environments as needed to accommodate changes in workloads and traffic.
Another advantage of the AWS Lab is that it provides a wide range of pre-configured environments, including popular development stacks such as LAMP, Ruby on Rails, and Node.js. This can greatly reduce the time and effort required to set up and configure a development environment.
In addition, the AWS Lab also provides a number of tools and features to help users manage and monitor their development and testing environments. For example, users can use the AWS Management Console to view detailed metrics and logs for their environments, as well as to set up alarms and notifications for specific events.
Overall, the AWS Lab is a powerful and flexible development environment that can greatly simplify the process of developing and testing applications on the AWS platform. Whether you're a small startup or a large enterprise, the AWS Lab can help you quickly and easily create, configure, and manage your development and testing environments, allowing you to focus on building great applications.

Your hands dug into the front of his leather cutte, weaving your fingers in between the cotton of his shirt. The only sound was the roaring of the bike beneath you, and the wind as it thrashed your hair into chaos against your helmet. You weren’t sure where you were going, but at this point you didn’t care. You squeezed your arms as they wrapped snug around him, tightening as he sped faster into the unknown.
Chibs followed just behind. They had been on their way to a Mayan warehouse earlier that night, before Jax decided to make a detour when he saw your car parked at the bar. When it was clear they had to go, you had begged Jax to bring you along. To your surprise, you had somehow convinced him. His dick was clouding his judgement, but you were both desperate to find an end to what you had started in the backseat of your car.
They parked the bikes in the back of a desolate warehouse, alongside a large empty truck. The building was fenced in with metal chain links and surrounded by broken security lights. From what you could see through the darkness, it was completely deserted.
Jax approached Chib as he rocked the kickstand on his bike as you waited patiently alongside his.
“Bobby and Juice on their way to the Clubhouse?”
Chib’s placed his helmet on the bike, “aye. Everything according to plan.”
“Alright, let’s get this done.”
Chibs placed his hand on Jax’s chest, “ye sure about bringing her? Could be here awhile pal.”
He knew he was right, bringing you with them wasn’t the smartest decision Jax had made tonight. He lit a cigarette between his lips as he walked back to you, “Just a straight forward drop off, Chibs. Stash the shit and get in the truck.”
Jax pulled you into him by the waist as you fumbled to undo the clasp of your helmet. His mouth pressed firmly against you, kissing you intently as his hands held your face to his. He watched you for a brief moment under him, your eyes staring up at him as he held your lip between his teeth. He broke only to smile widely down at you as he spoke, “c’mon, I got an idea.”
“We’ll be inside.” he called out, collecting a black satchel from the back of his bike. Chibs didn’t respond, only chuckling to himself as he watched Jax lead you away. “Kids.”
He pulled you through the warehouse by hand, obviously familiar with the surroundings. The building was dimly lit by a single light that shined from the entrance, just enough that you could see your feet beneath you as you walked.
You didn’t ask questions, just followed as he weaved his way through a thick maze of tall empty shelving units. He gripped your hand tighter as he pulled you into a small room cordoned off in the back of the building, housing the now derelict security unit and remnants of old office supplies.
There was a large display window that overlooked the majority of the warehouse, which would’ve been used to watch the ongoings of the building when it was up and running.
“Wait here.”
You obeyed his order, sitting on an old computer console that towered from the floor. It was just large enough that you could sit with your legs bent alongside it, straddling it beneath you.
The distant light was too far to aid in your sight as you attempted to watch him through the display window. Jax disappeared into the darkness of the warehouse. You could hear the sound of a door opening and closing from the opposite end of the building.
It felt like he was gone for eternity as you sat in silence, waiting for his return.
Suddenly an external door into the office opened, making you jump, and Jax re-entered, this time empty handed as the satchel he carried in with him was gone. He locked the door behind him. He moved toward you, now standing with his waistline parallel to your face. He was looking out into the warehouse from the side of the display window. “Just gotta wait for the pick up and then we’re out of here.”
“How long will we be? This place gives me the creeps.”
“Shouldn’t be long. Then I’m taking you home. We got unfinished buisness of our own, darlin’.”
Jax laid his hands to your cheeks, cupping your face upward to look at him. His thumb stroked your skin gently, as he peered down at you with hungry, desperate eyes.
“How ‘bout you just swallow my cock now to pass the time.”
You chuckled at his adavance, raising your eyebrows at the suggestion. “Here? What if someone comes in?”
Jax lowered himself down, forcing your head to turn on its side, as his lips pressed to your ear. He spoke slowly, unravelling you with every word. “Let them watch. I don’t give a shit. Your instructions earlier were very clear darlin’, you told me to take what’s mine. I’m going to take you, here and now. I’m going to have you where I want you, when I want you. You are mine to take, however the fuck I want.”
You nodded as he turned your face to his, your eyelids batting against your cheeks that were smushed beneath his hands. His thumb found entry between your lips and you instinctively opened your mouth wide for him. He smiled contently at how quickly you obeyed his silent demand. You held your tongue out, and he grasped at your jaw in response, turning your head side to side as he observed every inch of your face. “You are so fucking perfect. So fucking mine.”
You had never wanted him more than you did in this moment. You were prepared to beg and plead on your knees for his cock, you would do anything for it, and he knew it.
“Fill my mouth, Jax. Please.”
He leaned down to you as he unclamped the buckle to his belt, smirking against your lips as he placed them on yours.
He released his long length against your face, and you immediately took it into your hands. His head fell back as you stroked him intently, pressing the tip of his cock against your lips. You planted small, wet kisses against his shaft, as your hands caressed his erection. Once you’d kissed every inch, you took him into your mouth, forcing him in deeper as you pulled him in you by his unbuttoned jeans.
He groaned at the sensation of your wet tongue, circling his length before you choked at the fullness of him inside your mouth. There was nothing quite like gagging on Jax’s cock.
“Look at me when you take me”, he demanded. Your eyes trailed up to him as you swallowed his cock, drool dripping from your chin and down your neck. Moans escaped his gritted teeth and his hands entangled in your hair, collecting the strands into a ponytail behind your head. He tugged at the root to push you in closer, as he used your mouth over and over again.
“Get on the floor.”
You knew better than to question the order. You did exactly what he said, laying against the cold concrete floor that laid beneath you. He stroked his length as he stood above you, instructing you on every move to make.
“Take off your shirt and lay down.”
Once you were half naked on the floor, Jax lowered himself into you. His cock pressed against your waist, as he pulled down your jeans and panties.
“Spread your legs wide for me.”
Jax didn’t wait any longer. He encapsulated himself into your mound, opening your wet folds as he thrusted into you. A gasp escaped your throat as he entered, relief filtering through every inch of your core.
“Oh you’re still fucking soaked for me, babe.”
You couldn’t help but whine at the immediate pressure building between your thighs, desperately trying to hush your voice. It was near impossible to keep from screaming as the heat from your groin was burning to be released. You’d waited for what felt like forever since Jax had you in the same position in the backseat of your car, and the anticipation of being relieved was a feeling you revelled in. He grabbed your throat with his hand as you laid beneath him, your ass crushing repeatedly into the cold tile as he pounded into you.
“Remember what I told you earlier? While my face was covered in this perfect pussy?”
You couldn’t respond, let alone think of anything that happened earlier tonight. You groaned out as the length of his cock engulfed your insides, and hearing him talk this way was sending you over the edge. How the hell were you supposed to think?
“What’s wrong, darlin’? Can’t remember?”
“I can’t think straight- like t-this, Jax,” you admitted. You were staring into his eyes as he pounded into you, fighting the need for yours to roll in the back of your head.
“Let me help you.”
He sat you upright, his dick still embedded in your mound, as he lifted your legs, bending them against him. He pulled at your ass, bringing himself even further inside, the feeling of fullness overwhelming you. Your back was now arched against him, giving him full access to your clit.
“Fuck- not helping-“, you cried.
His hands travelled from your ass to your cunt, circling his fingers over the swollen nub, while he fucked you into oblivion.
“Jax- oh my go-“
He smiled as he watched you lose yourself in your climax, succumbing to his cock. His head fell back in pure bliss as he felt your orgasm squeezing him.
“I told you, you’re mine.” His cock pushed further into you as his hand tightening around your neck, the skin turning a shade of red at the force.
Your head nodded violently, “I’m yours-“ you somehow managed to muster out, your voice cracking under the pressure of your orgasm and his hand around your throat.
Just as Jax was going to unravel with you, you were interrupted by the sound of the main entrance door opening, followed by footsteps. “Did you hear that?”, you whispered.
Jax leant backward enough for him to peer over the display window. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness to realise who the intruders were. It was Bobby and Juice.
“Is it Chibs? Do we need to go?”
Jax looked back down at you, sprawled half naked against the floor and completely, totally his. Seeing you this way, he couldn’t of cared who entered the warehouse, he was going to finish claiming you no matter who watched. He gleamed at the sight of your flushed pink cheeks and hair utterly strung awry, all the result of his doing. “Oh no, darlin’. I’m not finished with you yet.”
His cock found your entrance again, sliding into your dripping mound as he bit back a groan. “You feel so fucking good- taking me so well-“
You tried desperately to suppress your scream, failing as a squeal slipped through your lips.
Jax quickly placed his hand over your mouth, and you were thankful for the aid in silencing your whimpers. He roamed over your body and face, watching as pleas left your eyes, begging in desperation for another release. His lips pulled into a devilish smirk as he lowered himself completely into you, forcing his cock to push even deeper into your mound.
You groaned into his hand, his hips finding a way to submerge even further into your core. Jax was enjoying every moment of this, watching as your composure expired around his cock, while he never wavered, just holding himself there within you.
“You gotta be quiet for me now, darlin’,” he murmured slowly into your ear. “Can you do that for me?”
You nodded at his request, struggling to move from the weight of his body pressing against you. His hand tightened around your mouth as tears began to stream from your eyes, overwhelmed by the urge to stay silent against the extreme fullness you were enduring.
The footsteps grew closer, as Jax pushed deeper and deeper into you with each thrust.
You could hear Bobby lowly calling out, “Jax, where you at?”
He ignored his calls, focused entirely on you beneath him. Nothing else mattered to him but the way you felt wrapped around his cock.
He was relentless, repeatedly finding a new depth with each thrust into you. His hand stayed out against your mouth, and you bit at the skin to suppress the groans that couldn’t be muffled. He quickened his pace, and your fingers squeezed at the leather of his cutte as you found your final climax. Jax hunched his back, bringing his face to yours as he found his release with you, filling your aching cunt with his seed.
When he recovered from his end, he began to trail plentiful kisses from your chest, and up your neck. He paused at your jawline as he pressed a tight smile against your skin, nibbling at the flesh.
“You’re only mine.”

hi babe <3 for modern au could I please request r sitting on Steve’s lap while he plays Xbox or something and she’s falling asleep and then he carries her to bed
Honestly, Steve didn’t play his games often.
He preferred to spend his free time with you, or see his friends outside of work, out of a phone screen, in front of him instead of through a text message. But on the days that it rained, Indiana turning inky and navy with clouds and puddles, he liked to stay indoors, cotton sweats and warm hoodie on, headset over bed mussed hair and his controller in his hand.
You’d usually leave him be, smiling and rolling your eyes as he yelled at his losses and talked shit to Eddie and Dustin, scolding Mike and asking, ‘do you kiss El with that mouth, Wheeler?’
But when noon rolled into evening and dusk settled over the town and your apartment, you’d run out of episodes of Schitt’s Creek to rewatch and your affection metre was running low. It wasn’t like Steve kicked you out of the spare room that he kept his computer and gaming consoles in, there just wasn’t that much room for you to join him in it. His stupid chair took up much of the floor space, his desk holding a too big monitor and games lined the shelves he’d fixed to the walls.
So when you crept in mid battle royale, Steve let his eyes stray from the screen to linger over you, smiling at his old high school hoodie that hung from your frame, your leggings that you’d tucked into fluffy socks. He was all pinked cheek and messy haired, the annoyance of losing to Dustin for the fifth time getting him all worked up and he looked so pretty. And besides, there really wasn’t anywhere else to sit apart from on his lap.
You felt his grin pressed to your cheek as you clambered into him, legs on either side of his hips as you carefully manoeuvred your way under his arms, trying your best to not make him let go of the controller. Steve hummed in appreciation when you buried your face into the crook of his neck, whispering a sweet “hi, gorgeous,” to you as you settled against him.
You hummed right back, pressing a kiss to his neck and snorting when you heard Eddie’s tinny voice through the earpiece of his headset, a garbled cackle and a ‘flirt with me all you want, Harrington, I’m still kicking your ass.’
You didn’t have to look at Steve to know he was rolling his eyes, his arms tightening around you, muscles flexing as he jabbed at buttons in a pattern you didn’t know the significance of. He huffed at his friend, explaining to the group that you were here, like that’s all they needed to know.
The bets commenced soon after, a din of laughter and teasing, each boy insisting on the time that Steve would dip now they knew you were with him. Eddie told him he was whipped, Will booed loudly in the background and Lucas asked if Steve planned on winning a round to at least try to impress you.
Steve ignored all of them, smiling only ‘cause he felt yours against his neck, your soft laughter shaking your shoulders and he planted a row of kisses along your cheek in response, realising how much he’d missed you now that you were in his arms. He felt guilty, like he’d neglected you all day. And when he told you as such, you shook your head and managed to catch the corner of his mouth in a kiss.
“I know, you’re awful,” you told him, trying your best to sound serious. “I’ve been wasting away downstairs, all alone.”
“Poor girl,” he grinned, abandoning his controller in order to tug you closer, one warm hand sneaking up the back of your hoodie, fingers tracing over the bumps of your spine. “Should’ve come and told me off.”
“I’d rather manhandle you and demand attention,” you murmured, cheeks burning when you realised you were speaking too close to the microphone on Steve’s headset, a dulled chorus of gagging noises and ‘get a room,’ yelled back at you.
You huffed but grinned, when Steve told them all off, explosions on the screen garnering their attention once more. You wiggled, getting comfy, nosing along the line of Steve’s jaw, happy when he let out a stuttered sigh.
“Jus’ gonna finish this round, ‘kay?” He asked you quietly, and you knew he’d switch it off mid match if you asked him too.
But you nodded, happy to just be close, smiling at the yells of your friends that could be heard through the headset everytime Steve missed a target ‘cause he was too busy stroking lines over your bare skin to be bothered. And when he finally managed to catch up to Eddie’s character, taking down whatever monster/boss/alien thing it was they were fighting, you were letting sleep tug at you, Steve’s aftershave and the scent of your laundry detergent clinging to his clothes. You barely heard him say his goodbyes, the clamouring of voices that yelled ‘told you so, pay up a Munson,’ as he signed off.
You hummed, sleepy, unfocused as Steve kissed over your hair and cheeks, doing his best to coax you awake before he gave in entirely and stood, arms tucked under your butt to keep you close. You squeaked at the sudden movement, grumbling something that sounded like his name into his neck but you wrapped your legs around him all the same, still just happy to be close as he made his way to your shared bedroom, more than ready to give you all the attention you deserved from him.

Self aware! Cloud Strife x Fem! Reader
you are angel?
Tumblr media
You took a deep breath as you returned home. It's been a hard day and all you can think about is getting some rest and playing your favorite game.
At first you lay on the bed, having a little sleep. After about 40 minutes, was already doing what you wanted.
sitting down, you turned on your computer/console and waited.
all day you thought about it, and finally there was an opportunity to spend time as you wanted. You were very attracted to the plot of Final Fantasy, because of which you often thought about what would happen next during a break from something. What is Cloud's background? Who is Sephiroth, who constantly appears in his life? What is Aerith hiding? And much more that you might be asking as a question as a franchise newbie.
when your gaming device was launched, you inserted the game disc and started playing.
that's the best couple of hours of your life before bed.
you passed the moment where there was a championship in strength. (I hope I was able to describe correctly) where Cloud and Aeris fought against other teams. You noticed Cloud's very intense look during idle animations, which was not there before. It seemed odd, but anyway, what's the difference? new animation, that's all.
But the problem was that Cloud was just staring at you intently. He saw you, but knew that you were not around. You are… roughly speaking, intangible. He can see you and hear your voice, but not interact. Exactly the same as you … only to manage him. If it can be called at least some kind of interaction.
Cloud was tired, tense, and just…afraid he'd gone crazy. He wasn't supposed to see you, right? But he constantly feels that you control him .. in some strange and incomprehensible way for him.
you decide to take a break for a couple of minutes, stretching the muscles that have pinched you, while you have been sitting in an almost motionless position for three hours. A small moan of pain escaped your mouth as you tried to relieve the pain and pressure in your shoulders. The blond looked at you all the time, and understood that you still really could control him. After all, when you released the gamepad / keyboard, it did not move. And he couldn't do it.
Cloud then began to worry about how long this would take. Why are you in control of his life? Is he in something unreal? Non-existent? Why is this happening to him? He couldn't think of a reasonable explanation.
when you started to pass further, the blond wanted to sigh heavily but could not. He was annoyed that he was limited in his actions, even if he understood that he was being controlled. However, he tired of being a doll in someone's hands …
and now… the Sector 7 slums are starting to fall apart. Lavina's partners die, more precisely Biggs and Jessie. You, like Tifa, cry because you really feel sorry for the characters, even if they are not real. The truth is that you were confused.. Cloud did not show any emotions at all. Just a little confusion and tension, but no more .. there was no visible sadness, maybe regret. Some kind of sympathy for the same Tifa, who finds it hard to accept the death of her partners.
You couldn't even imagine what was going on in Cloud's head at that moment...
a couple more hours and it's time for you to finish, because you need to get ready for bed, because of tomorrow's business.
you're about to take out the disc and turn off the console/computer when all of a sudden you have a little game freeze. You tensed up a little, but decided not to pay much attention. Honey, it's your error…
Cloud has gained access to your system, and now he wants to take a closer look at his existence, and your life.
( if you like this fanfiction, i might to make a second part. )

Ever Again
Obey Me! was planned for this prompt and I thought about who to write about since I did a lot of works for any of them at this point. Naturally, I could have chosen someone like Simeon and Solomon but I was just taken by this idea and came to the conclusion it would work best for Levi ^-^ So here we go!
Fandom: Obey Me! One master to rule them all Pairings:  Yandere!Leviathan x GN!Darling!Reader Warnings: Yandere, Violence (because of an not-so-accidental accident and off-screen), Possessiveness, Delusional Yandere
Prompt:     Free Day Friday: Blorbo - Is there a character (or more than one) you just need to do something to? Now’s the time to do it. This can be a character from anywhere, including your own head! @sintember
»»———————— ♡ ————————««
You awoke to the feeling of lips against your throat, the heaviness of a body weighing down on you.
With a groan, you curled your fingers, noticing just how stiff they were, as was the rest of your limbs. It was as if you had been knocked out and then slept on the floor, every part of you uncooperative as you asked it to move. Coming back into reality and starting to feel your body again was like starting up a computer. And once it was set in motion, everything began to respond again, your motor functions and your senses.
Sobbing reached your ears as you pried open an eye, crusty and swollen. It made you want to remember what happened before you blacked out this badly, the reason your head was still hammering as if someone was pounding against it to be let out. What did you forget? What made you forget?
The sound of crying intensified as your hearing sharpened, the feeling of something wet dripping on your skin and rolling off your neck and the side of your face becoming a matter of notice for your brain. There wasn’t much to see in the darkness of your obscured gaze, though occasionally, blue light flickered through indigo strands of hair, clouding your vision.
Pressure suddenly intensified on your body as you were squeezed tightly, the sobs turning into wailing, and your lungs screamed along for air. You gasped, and suddenly, the crying stopped while your coughing picked up. Frantically, you were released, the person lying on top of you pulling away just far enough to look at you, and you forced the other eye open as well, peering into Leviathan’s face.
A look of horror and surprise graced his face, and you took a few deep breaths once the coughing settled, trying your damn best to understand why he looked at you like that. “O-M-G, [Name]!” he whispered, your name returning the tears to his eyes. Usually, you’d cringe at him spelling out the abbreviation like this, but you hardly had control of your body now.
“I thought you were a total goner! Crushed! Game over!”
Levi stopped himself from continuing by letting out more pathetic crying while you peeled your eyes from him looking around. Something in the way he described it seemed to cause an itch in your brain, and when you finally looked towards the door, you realized one of his shelves was gone. It also made you realize where you were—his bathtub, or well, bed. You couldn’t see the floor, but you assumed the shelf to be there. That was almost enough to figure out what happened on your own, yet, you asked regardless.
“What… happened?” you croaked out, your voice scratching your throat from how dry everything was.
Leviathan didn’t stop crying as he fell forward again, burying his head in your collarbones. At least he didn’t bury you under him again, but this was worse enough. Even if you had wanted to console him, you couldn’t lift your hand. Taking a deep breath after crying his eyes out, he lifted up to hover over you again, bringing your seemingly lifeless fingers to his face on his own and rubbing his own cheek into your palm comfortingly as he tried to get his composure back.
“You wanted to leave,” he recalled sorrowfully. If it wasn’t so hard for you to focus, you’d have called him out on his weird act. He had behaved so weirdly for so long despite the friendship you two had built. If something happened to you, it must have been his doing. It made you angry to think he was the one sobbing and crying while you were in so much pain.
“A-And you said you’d tell Lucifer that I’ve been acting strange and hiding things. That… everyone and you are worried about me… And I! I couldn’t let you go thinking that of me! I am so sorry, [Name]! I am so… sorry…”
Again, he was back to crying, rubbing his eyes like a child that got scolded, and you had a moment to think back, closing your eyes as the blue light of the aquarium strained them. What he said was true. You really did seek him out to confront him. He had been holed up in his room and unresponsive, even when you used your pact magic to order him to come and participate in games or activities with you. You’ve been so worried. Threatening him with Lucifer was the only thing you could come up with. But after you wanted to storm out of his room, your memory went black.
“What… did you do?” you dug deeper, wanting to know everything that happened and how you woke up here with a crying Leviathan above you.
“I just got so frustrated! I hate it when you leave me, and this time you came to me instead of the other way around! I just… I wanted to… I didn’t mean to…”
“Levi,” you croaked, gentle but also assertive.
“My magic did it! I swear! I just wanted to stop you from leaving through the door, and before I knew it, you were buried under the shelf! I didn’t mean it... I’m so sorry!”
Had you not needed the air to breathe so desperately, you would have let out a long sigh. Your lungs were forced to release the air regardless as Levi fell back on top of you, crying. It wasn’t like him to be that easily irritable, and one of the reasons you wanted him to have a talk with his brother before something terrible happened. Apparently, you had been too late.
It took a while for him to calm down. You didn’t want to say or do anything. You’ve always liked Levi, and he was a great friend to hang out with, but ever since he changed, you lost most of your sympathy. And knowing he brought you into this situation made you want to comfort him even less. It was a very awkward situation, not least because of what he said next.
“I thought you were dead…. That I killed you.”
The words were barely louder than his crying, but they caused an odd vibe to come forth from the emotions going through you. A strange thought that didn’t quite resonate with how worried he was acting. It was almost as if...
“And you would have just let me… die? Not even called for a doctor?” you asked him, not as hesitantly as you were curious. A morbid curiosity, perhaps stemming from your near death experience, but with a need to know nonetheless. His hands clenched into fists as he slowly began to rise again, facing you. “I’m useless, aren’t I? I know I am, but I…”
His tear-filled eyes became void of emotions suddenly, the color draining from them as did the worry and hurt from his expression. The abrupt change shocked you and drove a cold shiver down your spine even before he spoke. “I wanted no one to know that you are here. They would have taken you away from me, and I didn’t want that. Terrible, aren’t I?”
“Levi…” you whispered, horrified as the pieces all came together. He would have rather let you die than let anyone else take you to the hospital or get you the help you needed? What happened to this sweet and playful friend of yours?
“Ah, see, it’s…” he stammered, suddenly avoiding your gaze and bashfully looking down. The next time he looked up again, his eyes were back to normal, his expression soft and somewhat… creepy in the way he cutesy peeked at you from beneath his lashes. “I never got to tell you this, but the reason I changed—it’s you!”
You had a horrible feeling about this, but you had already dug too deep into your grave as that he’d stop spilling all the truths now. Levi didn’t care if you wanted to hear them or not, but you wished with all your might that you could have thrown him off you and stumbled out the door so as to not have to experience this.
“Because I really, really, reallyreallyreallyreallyreally love you.”
Now that the cat was out of the bag, he seemed to be filled with instant relief, an expression of glee showing on his face as he laughed merrily, scratching the side of his face like an anime boy would after a confession. It was more genuine happiness than you had ever seen on him, even more than when he got a new game or went to a convention and talked about Ruri-chan. When he looked back up again, his gaze so full of adoration and joy, you felt goosebumps ruin your skin from your arms to your legs, and you didn’t have the time to say anything as Leviathan continued.
“I hope you’ll give me your answer soon! In the dating sims, they always go to a special place to confess their feelings, but I…”
Looking at you sheepishly, he smiled softly again. He was completely lost in his own fantasy world, one that seemed to have brought about the change you were so scared of before.
“I don’t think I can let you go ever again.”

I wrote this for Mcspirk Month 2024 Day 13 Time loop. The event is being hosted on @mcspirkevents. This fic is a multi-chapter slow burn. The end game ships will be Chulu, Mcspirk, and Uhotty.
Summary:
Chekov stretches his head left and right. Slight cracks help relieve some of the tension in his neck. Sleep can always wait if the captain needs them. The fact that he’s on the bridge at all was a stroke of luck Chekov has never taken for granted. If the captain wants him on navigation instead of beta shift, well, he’s proud. It means he’s done his job well.
Kirk trusts him.
Captain Kirk trusts him. ---- The title is in reference to "Strange Life of Ivan Osokin" by Pyotr Ouspenskii.
Preview of the story:
A ping sounds off from the captain’s PADD. Chekov’s adjustment waiting for approval. For most course changes his choice was good enough. If the reasoning was to avoid an ion storm, dust cloud, or debris the computer would take his adjustments and feed the recommendations straight to Sulu. For a route change without viable reason, the captain has to get his eyes on it first.
He fights the urge to look back. Captain Kirk doesn’t like hovering, unless it’s Mr. Spock or Dr. Mccoy. By all means he should keep his eyes straight ahead, or down on his console. The answer will come. Yes or no. He fights the urge to wring his hands. What reason would the captain have to say no?
Nerves get the better of the young ensign. The young ensign turns his head slightly back. An amused smile rests on the captain’s face. Well, Chekov assumes it’s amused. Half of the smile was covered by the captain’s fist as he reads the PADD gingerly.
As Kirk’s eyes rise, Chekov turns his gaze back on his console, fast as humanely possible. Not fast enough. He could feel the captain’s eyes burrowing into the back of his head. Curses! If only he had vulcan reflexes.
This is foolish. He knows the captain will approve it. Why wouldn’t he?

“I didn’t steal the credits.”
You shot Cassian a sidelong glare across the dark cockpit of his starship as he fidgeted with the dials and gauges. The engines sputtered futilely as Cassian continued to make adjustments to the flight console.
“Stop playing games, Cassian,” you shot back. You were still rankled by his intrusion, and Cassian’s reluctance to answer any of your questions directly was making it worse. “If you didn’t steal the credits, then why the hell are you acting like a criminal?!”
You saw a momentary glimmer of hurt flicker in Cassian’s dark eyes, but he continued to avoid your gaze. He was focused on the starship’s console, his hands dancing along its lit surface as he flicked switches, fiddled with dials, and punched in a string of codes to the ship’s computer. He cursed under his breath as one of the engines backfired, spitting out a thick cloud of black smoke in the pale early-dawn air.
“Cassian, goddamnit, you better tell me what’s going on or so help me I will walk out of this ship and back to my bed!” you pressed. He stopped and turned towards you, the desperation in his dark eyes catching you off guard.
“Please, y/n. I know I don’t deserve it, but I need you to trust me.”
Your nostrils flared in exasperation, but the intensity of his pleading silenced your rebuttals. You nodded bitterly, crossing your arms across your chest to communicate your displeasure. You saw Cassian relax an inch, his attention turning back to the flight console.
“I need to get that engine working.” Without waiting for a reply, Cassian rose from his seat and strode out of the ship. A few seconds later, you heard the dull thud of footsteps on the wing of the starship as he walked out to the sputtering engine.
Finally alone with a moment to process, you let out a shaky breath and leaned your head back against the headrest of the co-pilot’s chair. You let your eyelids flutter closed as you tried to think of how long you could realistically be gone before someone would notice. Unfortunately, you had a long list of clients at the moment. You could get away with three, maybe four days if you were lucky. Whatever Cassian needed - wherever he was taking you - it would have to be a short trip. You couldn’t afford to lose the income from those jobs.
The bright beam of a searchlight sweeping over the launchpad jarred you out of your reverie. Your eyes shot open and your mind pricked with a twinge of anxiety. The sound of distant voices reached your ears, and the searchlight settled squarely on Cassian’s ship.
“Cassian?” you called out. He didn’t answer, although you heard a heavy clunk from the direction of the damaged engine.
“Cassian!” Still nothing.
“Cassian?!”
“I know, I know.”
You jumped, not realizing he had made it back inside the ship. The searchlight was bobbing frantically, its carrier running in your direction. The voices were coming into earshot now, a fleet of footsteps racing along the flat runway in your direction.
“Cassian, who are they?” you asked, trying to sound brave. Cassian ignored you again, flicking a few dials above his head. The engine he’d been working on shuddered violently, shaking the entire ship.
“Come on, baby,” he muttered, coaxing his ship to life as he gently pressed on the accelerator lever. The engines roared in response, one sputtering and belching as it tried to catch a steady idle. “Come on, not now. Don’t do this to me now.”
You fell quiet, suddenly an appreciation of the danger you might really be in slapping you across the face. Outside, you could hear voices shouting at you.
“Stop! Get out of the starship! Cassian Andor and Y/n Y/l/n, you’re under arrest by order of the Galactic Empire!”
Your mind felt like it’d been plunged into ice, your thoughts tangled on the words Galactic Empire. The seriousness of your situation struck you like lightning. The Empire only came after the most serious crimes in this sector. And their treatment of accused criminals was infamous, although you’d never personally known anyone who’d met one. Anyone who got accused by the Empire simply vanished and never returned. And they knew your name.
You shot Cassian a wide-eyed look as the starship’s engine finally thundered into full idle.
“Yes!” His face broke into a momentary grin of relief, pumping his fists into the air briefly as his starship’s engines synchronized and whirred into full power. Cassian’s celebration was short-lived. He reached over and grabbed your hand, placing it on the accelerator.
“On my mark, throw this forward as far as it’ll go,” he called out over the din of the engines. The searchlight was so bright in front of the cockpit windows you were almost blinded. You nodded next to him, startling at the sound of blasters opening fire. You’d heard blaster fire before, but you’d never been the target. Adrenaline raced through your veins and your whole body went tense.
Sensing your fear, Cassian leaned over, pushing you down below the sightline from the cockpit windows and sheltering you with his arm. You let Cassian hug you against him, twisting to shield you from the window with his body. You were pressed against his side, one hand still on the starship’s accelerator. You felt Cassian moving around you, flicking switches and turning knobs. A sudden dropping sensation told you the starship had lifted off the launchpad. The sound of blaster fire was intensifying, although you could hear desperation in the voices outside as they realized that the ship was lifting. You forced yourself to breathe in and out as you tried to shut out the roar of the engines, the whizzing blaster fire, and the shouts from below. You closed your eyes and tucked yourself instinctively deeper into Cassian’s side.
“NOW!”
You thrust the ship’s accelerator forward as far as you could push it, surprised by how much resistance the lever gave you. You gritted your teeth and threw your full strength against the lever. It shuddered forward until the engines roared so loudly you swore your head would split in two. You’d only traveled at hyperdrive once before in your life, and you felt the same gut-wrenching vertigo as the starship leapt past the speed of light. You kept breathing, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth, fighting against the nausea. You felt Cassian tucking a stray lock of your hair back behind your ear.
“Just keep breathing,” he said, his voice relaxing somewhat as the threat of Imperial blaster fire receded behind you in hyperspace. “We’ll be there soon.”
You felt yourself slip into a semi-conscious stupor, the dizziness of hyperdrive washing away any sense of time passing. Only Cassian’s warmth and his occasional encouragement to breathe in and out reminded you of where you were.
* * * * * * * * *
The ship dropped out of hyperspace suddenly. You lurched forward, your body slack and almost laid fully across Cassian’s lap. He didn’t appear upset by it, and even if he had been you were so disoriented and nauseous that you couldn’t have done anything about it.
You heard him power the engines all the way down to a barely-there purr as the ship came to a complete stop.
“Here. Sit up slowly with your eyes open.”
Against your instincts, you forced your eyes open as Cassian gently guided you back to an upright posture in your seat. His jaw was tense and his brows knitted together as he watched you intently, inventorying your every move with tender worry. Once you were sitting up on your own, he stood and walked towards the back of the ship. You turned instinctively to follow him with your eyes, instantly regretting it as a new wave of nausea bubbled in your gut.
“Look straight forward,” he told you. You acquiesced, listening to the sound of him rummaging around behind you. When he returned, he handed you a small vial of bright purple liquid. You fumbled with it, struggling to coordinate your movements. Cassian saw and uncorked the vial for you, helping your hands grip it. A strong, sweet smell emanated from the violet liquid, tickling your nostrils. You grumbled up at him, unable to bring yourself to speak.
“It’s homemade,” he told you as if sensing your question. “Bacta mixed with meiloorun juice. It’ll help with the hyperspace sickness.”
You cocked a skeptical eyebrow up at him, your head still spinning as you rested it against the seat behind you.
“You really think I would go to the trouble of poisoning you after all that?” He chuckled darkly and waved his hands generally in the back of the ship, referencing whatever you’d just escaped. You managed to shoot him a half smile, returning your focus to the vial of liquid. Your hands were trembling, and you had to move slowly to avoid reactivating the urge to vomit.
Cassian sensed your sensitivity and gently took the vial from your hand. He placed one hand behind your head at the base of your neck as he placed the vial against your lips, tipping it back as he helped your head incline slightly so you could swallow it. The juice tasted sweet and pleasant, but you could sense the bitter, viscous Bacta milk mixed in. Still, you drank it all. As the liquid settled in your gut, the spinning nausea softened and the pounding in your head dulled. Cassian wiped a stray drop from your lips and you felt your cheeks heat at the tender contact.
“I didn’t realize you were sensitive to hypertravel,” Cassian commented aimlessly. He settled into the seat next to you, plugging in coordinates to the starship’s console. The ship began to edge forward at a steady pace, nowhere near the violent speed of hypertravel. You peeked out of the cockpit window through slitted eyelids. A planet no bigger than a marble at this distance hung in the emptiness of space directly in front of the ship. It was a pale, sandy color with flecks of green and a wispy-looking atmosphere encircling it.
“Where are we?” you asked weakly.
“That’s Niamos,” Cassian replied, gesturing towards the planet. “Figure we can hole up here for a while.” You noticed the heavy tone in Cassian’s voice and turned your head towards him. The movement made you spin momentarily but the medicine was doing its job, and you regained equilibrium quickly.
“Why are we here, Cassian?” you pressed.
He turned towards you, his eyes suddenly serious.
“Please,” you continued. “Tell me everything. You owe me that.”
Cassian bit the inside of his lip, dropping his eyes from yours guiltily. He sighed heavily.
“I didn’t steal the credits,” he began, repeating his earlier statement when you’d first asked him why he’d awoken you in the middle of the night insisting you had to leave. “But I did steal something to get them.”
You nodded, not surprised by his statement. You’d as much as accepted that there was no completely legal way to come by a sum that large. At least not on Ferrix.
“I traded what I stole with an old business partner. Someone I trusted. Someone I’ve known for years…” Cassian’s expression glazed over with regret and hurt. He’d been betrayed, you realized.
“They sold you out?” you asked.
Cassian nodded, swallowing thickly as his eyes refocused.
“The credits they gave me had tracers in them.” Your stomach sank. Tracers were sophisticated tech, and that caliber of tech wasn’t wasted on petty criminals. You’d always assumed that Cassian lived his life a little left of legal, but you’d never once guessed it would be this serious. Tracers were used to bring down huge crime syndicates, illegal slave trades, and the most lucrative black markets. Not petty junk pirates or your run-of-the-mill silver-fingered thief.
“Tracers?” you asked breathlessly. Cassian nodded.
“What kind of stuff are you tied up in, Cassian?” You weren’t truthfully sure you wanted the answer, but you had to know.
He raked a hand through his dark hair, pain etched into his expression.
“A few months back I was contacted by someone from the Rebellion.” You fell silent, numb with surprise. You’d never known anyone with direct ties to the Rebellion; in fact, you’d always thought of the Rebellion as more of a fairytale than anything. To think Cassian had actually met someone in the Rebellion, that he’d been contacted by them, felt surreal.
“I helped out with a mission. On Aldhani.” The name of the planet Cassian mentioned sounded strangely familiar, but you couldn’t place it. You swiped it aside, focusing on Cassian’s story as he continued. “The Empire found me out, tracked me to Ferrix and got an in with my contact, the one who gave me the credits. They were trying to use the tracers to track down the others who helped with the Aldhani mission. They expected I was using the credits to finance another Rebel plot against the Empire.”
You nodded, trying to keep up with moving pieces as Cassian kept talking. Your head was spinning again, but this time it wasn’t with vertigo.
“But you gave me the credits…” you trailed off, trying to connect the dots. Cassian nodded as if urging you onward.
“So the Empire thinks… that I’m working with you. That I’m part of the Rebellion.” As soon as you spoke it aloud, you knew it was true. That would explain why he insisted on you leaving. If the Empire had you pinned as a Rebel, they would kill you on site.
Cassian gulped, dropping his eyes to his lap.
“Am I right, Cassian?”
A moment of tense quiet stretched between the two of you as you waited for Cassian to confirm your fate. If you were right, then you’d have to live the rest of your days on the run. Even the craftiest Rebels sometimes didn’t manage to stay one step ahead of the Empire, and they had the backing of the Rebellion. You had nothing, and no one. Your father was gone. Your money, your livelihood, everyone you knew was back on Ferrix.
Across the dim cockpit from you, Cassian finally forced his eyes to meet yours. The same deep chasm of grief you’d seen in his eyes back on Ferrix stared back at you.
“I’m sorry, y/n.” His voice broke, emotion cracking his words. “I never would have put you in danger. I swear it. I didn’t know.” His eyes burned with intensity as he pushed that promise towards you.
You waved his apology off with more nonchalance than you felt, but the horrible pain you saw in Cassian’s face would have driven you to say or do almost anything to wipe it away.
“It’s alright, Cassian. I know you didn’t mean it.”
He looked like he was about to argue with you, so you pressed forward with more questions.
“How did you figure this all out?” You didn’t care much, but you were trying to distract him. And yourself, truthfully. The weight of this revelation was too much to take in at once. You knew you’d need to wrestle with this in solitude, but that would need to wait a while.
“The Rebellion put this burden on me, but they also warned me. My contact got wind that the Empire was on my trail with those traced credits. He risked everything to get a message to me.” Cassian sat back, leaning against the headrest of the pilot’s seat. You could see the reflection of the pale green planet Niamos in his eyes. He seemed lost in thought for a moment before he turned back to you.
“They’ll kill you if they get the chance. Both of us. I’m sorry, but there’s no going back.”
You swallowed down the lump in your throat at Cassian’s words. You nodded, trying to look brave when your insides felt like they’d turned to jelly. You followed his gaze out the cockpit window, eager to hide the tears that prickled at the corner of your eyes.
“So we’re going to hide here?” You gestured towards Niamos.
“For a while at least,” Cassian said, punching in a few coordinates on the starship’s console. “I know a place we should be able to use for a while. As soon as it’s safe, I’ll get you set up somewhere safe and I’ll make sure you never see me again.”
The ship picked up its pace towards the approaching planet, responding to the flight trajectory Cassian had entered. The cockpit fell into silence, each of you preoccupied with your own thoughts. In spite of yourself, with everything Cassian had told you and the implications it all carried, you found your mind returning to one particular sentence over and over again:  I’ll make sure you never see me again. Those words burned like acid in memory, and you hated that after having your world turned upside down, this was what you were hung up on. There were many things Cassian had told you that you’d hoped weren’t true: that last sentence the most of all.
