Justice Devil

Ok, I'm calling bullshit on the gigantic caterpillar monster being the Justice Devil. The concept of justice is too thematically rich in this story to be embodied in a random big monster. For both Asa and Denji, the feeling of being deserving/undeserving of their circumstances is a central pillar to their psychological state.

For people who go through so much torment and misfortune, guilt can become attached to anything they value. No, I reckon that Justice Devil is still out there, and whatever form it takes, it's going to further push Asa and Denji's story forward.

fujimoto's writing is actually so good because these bits here are clearly jabs at whatever ppl say about csm (whether a playful taunt at readers going "where's denji" after ch 98 or directly pointing out three things that people say about chainsaw man; too much gore, it's dumb, and there's a lot of horny fanservice)

and because of this it makes me think that this line:

specifically, denji's "how do you know my name...?" could either be alluding to how denji is turning off his brain to the traumatizing events of pt 1 (and lets be real, international assassins arc is pretty high up there with Fucked Up Shit That Happened) OR could be alluding to how many people deadass didn't know who yoshida was because they forgot/read too fast/some other reason. maybe it's both! maybe it's neither! either way, i think it's genius!!

CSM x TWST crossover/AU, idk this was just for fun where I made this bc I enjoyed watching Chainsawman. ADeuce + my TWST oc Ellis, I made Ace fit the role of Denji, Deuce as Aki, and of course Ellis as Power. I quite enjoyed it ngl bc I could still see the chaotic sibling vibes between Power and Denji and Ace and Ellis. And Deuce is part of the trio! :D

I just HAD to make Riddle as Makima, I came up with a few sketches and scene redraws of Riddle as the intimidating Makima lol, of course Makima is a whole adult so I made the alcohol joke for that bar/restaurant scene where Makima consumes so much alcohol and never gets drunk. Riddle of course can't drink alcohol so its just a scene prop I made him hold 💀

And of course Cater as Himeno, though I don't like what she does and some of it I find a little creepy with Denji, I feel like Himeno has some similar personality traits like Cater, for example hiding away her true emotions and expresses a front for everyone. And also that carefree and outgoing extroverted personality matches Cater rlly well. Finally we got Trey as Kobeni, I'd think he'd rlly be a badass and would take everyone by surprise by the skills he can do. ((((And also bc I think he would look cute with pins lmaoo))))

I do want to clarify that I know Makima is a bad person, from what I know, she is the antagonist/villain of the show. I have not read the manga. I'm an anime only, of course I do not wish for Riddle to act out and do whatever she does.

I personally think of it as an acting au sort of deal where I have these characters play as other characters from other shows. I made these just for fun and bc I enjoyed watching CSM.

Speculation After CSM Ch 113

I am almost certain that they're not trapped with Eternity. I'm pretty sure this is Famine's power alone that's stranded them in the endless aquarium. This is significant because Denji is immediately reminded of the Eternity Devil fight and is going to try to deal with it the same way he did the first time, only to discover that there's no devil coming after them that he can fight. He will absolutely get frustrated by this fact.

As long as this ISN'T the Eternity devil and it's just a Horseman power, Famine has tied Asa's hands. No devil body to combat means Denji can't get them out of there on his own, and Asa is basically a normal human unless she turns the items on her person into weapons (which would not be helpful in this situation). That leaves Asa with no choice but to comply or wait for Famine to let them out herself.

Famine has made things super inconvenient for Yoru's plan. Asa needs two things to make a weapon: guilt and ownership. I think she and Denji will have nothing to do but talk, and that will build her guilt. Now the problem here is how to make Denji "hers." They're in a stressful situation and they already are kind of fed up with each other, Denji's probably ticked because he can't find Eternity, Asa's panicking because the devils are forcing her hand, and now they're both getting starved. Not exactly peak conditions for Denji to fall for her even if Asa WERE willing to kill him.

The other troublesome thing here is that it derails Yoru's original intention for Asa to create a weapon so powerful it can take down Chainsaw Man. Turning Denji into a weapon after getting to know him in a short period time would spark some guilt, but not nearly as much as she would have had if she had a chance to grow close with or fall for him organically. Asa would not get to maximize the potential of this weapon, even if she could use Denji.

To escape the situation, I think she either has to come clean to him about Yoru and/or Famine wanting her to kill him, or she admits she was "responsible" for the deaths of her prez/teacher/mom/bestie and sparks up his empathy because of his own involvement with Power and Aki's demise. Their shared experience in this department is why I so desperately want them to end up together and heal each other. Denji's been pretty forgiving with all the women who wanted to kill him, so I wonder if the events of Part 1 changed that character trait or if he'll still be understanding of Asa's circumstances.

I don't think him changing into Chainsaw Man is gonna happen though because why have these elaborate plot elements that make Yoru fail to discover his identity, only for Yoru to find out (by reading Asa's mind) he IS Chainsaw Man when Asa and Denji finally escape?

Also, there's the obvious, glaring irony of the fact that he is Chainsaw Man and Asa's trying to make a weapon to fight Chainsaw Man. Can hybrids even be made into weapons? Denji doesn't die easily so would it even matter if she made him into one if she could, since his body could probably be restored as long as he has the Pochita heart? Also, Famine seems to be able to read Asa's mind-- does she already know that Denji is Chainsaw Man? Anyways, if Asa discovers that Denji's Chainsaw Man, then the entire objective of forming a relationship with Denji for weapons-purposes goes way out the window. Perhaps it will free her up to form a real relationship once she knows she can't use him...?

There could be a perspective shift (like when we followed Yuko briefly) where we cut to the devils, with Yoru trying to get Famine to give it up and let them out. Maybe if Asa is willing to make Denji a weapon even if she does not succeed in actually doing so, then that will be enough for Famine to allow them to go.

rereading csm manga to celebrate the anime and WOW rereading it gives me a whole new appreciating for the way Fujimoto writes characters and Makima’s character. This is a bit ramble analysis so forgive if this doesn’t make sense. SPOILERS!!! For Chainsaw Man Manga Ch. 1-97

In Ch. 2, Makima and Denji stop by a rest stop to get food. Makima ‘allows’ Denji to order whatever he wants and it’s like wow, it’s his first chance to eat whatever he wants, just like his dream has always been. Before he can dig in, a man shows up saying that a devil has taken his daughter. Makima immediately orders Denji to go kill the devil because her ‘udon will get soggy’. When he says that he also got an udon, she replies, “I don’t need a dog that says no. I heard a rumor from a judge that I know, dogs we can’t use get euthanized.” Like,,, oh my god. 

From the very beginning, this is like minutes of their first meeting, she is already trying to break the contract. She’s already testing how loyal he is to her - if he’s willing to give up his dream to eat delicious food (ie. a not-soggy bowl of Udon noodles) to fulfill her orders. She already places her desires and wishes above his own, and wants to see if he’ll do the same. 

And when he protests, saying that his udon will get soggy, she follows up with the sucker punch of “If you aren’t of use to me, you’ll be put down.” She makes it very clear to him, verbally, that she will KILL him if he doesn’t do what she wants. It’s so obvious that she doesn’t see him as a person, as a tool, as a dog and she even tells him this. 

Like when I read the infamous Ch. 81 and 82, I remember being in shock. But rereading, it just makes sense now. of course she would kill anyone Denji got close to. In their first meeting, she makes him give up his dreams (his udon) for her own comfort, and when he doesn’t want to, she threatens his life. Just. damn.

I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, I’m just in awe of how Fujimoto uses dialogue. He’s a master of Chekov’s gun, just scatters all these little hints from the very beginning. Damn. DAMN.

op 1: KICK BACK tbh wasnt a massive fan of the song when i came out but its grown on me w the full context & lyrics it slayed idc NOW THE VISUALS ... filled me w euphoria when i first saw it have (re)watched half the fucking movies referenced ONLY BC MIDTERMS WAS BEATING MY ASS .. so creative and fun and dynamic and hectic as fuck the timing and directing on this is like incomprehensibly good. its funny asf and has such beautiful lively enviornments and lighting and such a cohesive feel despite how batshit everything is NO ONE HAS TALKED ABT THE SHOT W THE MOUNTAINS AND SKY AND THE BULLETS. AM I THE ONLY OEN WHOSE INSANE ABT THAT ONE. so so beautiful literally a look into the minds of fujimoto and the ani staff and a gift upon this earth. 10/10

ed 1: SUCH A GOOD SONG !!!!!!! fit super well w the end of the first ep & is just genuinely such a banger. credits roll was smart for the airing of the actual ep, helped me take in the whole ep and appreciate the best parts of it. the mv released on mappas channel is rly solid considering it just recycled scenes from the actual ep !! love first half of the vid + the zoom in on pochitas tail the most ofc !! 6/10 bc the song is a banger but its just no as obsessable bc of the lack of og visuals :(

ed 2: GORGEOUSSS VISUALS tho it doesn’t feel v well aligned w the tone of csm BUT STILL !!!! song aligns super well w the visuals atleast & i love love the look of the animation, the environments especially are so beautiful 😭 i think the denji falling into the sky scene were especially well timed w the music and made me v emo about his character. esp love the hayakawa fam focus and how power is literally the one who PULLS HIM BACK DOWN .. beloveds 7.5/10 ok i like it picasso

ed 3: FAVE SONG its so good. so much to say abt this one rapid change of scene linework shading color sfx is fucking insane each unique aes makes me physically ill its so good. so gripping the TRANSITION from makima goddess to hayakawa fam W THE DOOR. AND THE TRAUMA. fave part is the hayakawa family shots towards the end that combined w the lyrics perfectly encapsulates what csm is thematically to me. goretastic insanity used as a means of making the intensely human obviously doomed connections at the heart of the story that much more impactful. fully embraces the best parts of csm and rips my heart out all in the course of 90 seconds 10/10 idc idc

ed 4: POWAAA !!!! song is such a fucking banger i mean it this shit has had me dancing for weeks BUT THE VISUALS .... so dynamic and insane love how they played dress up w her and also made sure the audience knew she was a lil freak. theres so much to love and appreciate about the visuals and how fucking sick the movements are and the colors but truly this ones just vibes. 9/10

ed 5: fs my FAVE of all the ones currently out (i think this is the most popular opinion lmao) but the combination of the frantic, very dense visuals and a rly cool fast paced song scratched smth in my brain. so much inspiration to dig through and BEAUTIFUL use of colors, lighting, and effects animation omg. Those shots of himeno are stapled on the inside of my eyelids i love them. so many art references w/ a great selection to specifically represent the chaos of the eternity devil love the use of optical illusions (ONCE AGAIN W THE LIGHTING !!!) and use of timing to create a jarring effect (horses running in slo mo (same w some shots of the chs) immediately being contrasted w rapid movement/blinking of eyes, fireworks, shots of the sky w the clouds racing across) as well as the rapid changing of one shot to another is so insane. another detail i love is that it has a almost collage like look bc each background/piece of ch or effects animation has dif linework, uses dif brushes, as well very unique lighting and shading. also so so much to dissect w how it foreshadows later events (if u start looking there are like. 4 dif instances of guns in this bitch holy fuck) and the themes of the work as a whole but i have classes a life etc that will have to wait til winter break. so genuinely obsessed w this one it was literally the one that convinced me (most obnoxious csm fan) that mappa knows exactly what theyre doing and are likely making the actual anime the way they are as a deliberate commitment to make it even more insane later down the line. i am a drastic rapid tonal shifts enjoyer i love this ed 10/10 its my gf

ed 6: not a massive fan of the visuals or the song for this one :( the instrumental of the song felt kinda jarring after the sequence of denji jumping into the eternity devils mouth, i was def expecting a dif kind of vibe. the visuals were cool, but i don't feel like the static characters were used particularly well. some of the transitions and “camera” movements also rly didn't feel very well suited to the cuts they were in. my fave part was the settings and backgrounds, especially the textures and the way the movement “through” the bgs were done, tho the 5th ed had a very similar concept and i think executed it better. kind of disappointing with how much i enjoyed the prev eds, but it was still enjoyable to watch and analyze how they constructed the visuals. 4/10 bc i respect what they were trying to do i just dont think they had the time to develop a unique vision

Just read the second chapter of csm part 2 today and it’s literally amazing. I love the whole concept of the war devil, a being currently portrayed as simply an evil out to get denji, who hasn’t even been introduced in the story yet aside from an intangible being and goal that these characters talk about.

Mitaka, who was just beginning to find some peace, got roped into a really bad situation with the war devil, and I’m excited to see how she deals with that. I find it interesting how we see a (main) character who is put in a position where she has no choice but to go along either the enemy, unlike how denji in the first part, who while was forced into what happened, these forces were external and able to be fought rather than the unique problem of mitaka and the war devil.

Something I noticed, was in the last panel of ch 99, was that a trio of devil hunters was introduced/created. Based on part 1’s themes of found family, I think that this could be something that happens again, or at least a similar situation, however we know what happened with the previous trio we saw in csm…

spoilers for csm.. omg i juuust finished ch 96, so part 1 of the story. super fun & easy 2 read while also having very emotionally powerful moments. the main theme was extremely present through the whole thing: control vs love. i rlyyy liked it & im sooo ready 4 more :D!!!!!
