DECEMBER 2023 (Part 2)

Part 1

Conventions

I've tabled with Peow at conventions a few times over the years, but this year was the first time I tabled alone, at the Stockholm International Comics Festival. I brought copies of my own books, Berzerkid and A Cold Place Between the Shores, along with a handful of Peow books. It went so well that I decided to table at conventions in Malmö and Gothenburg as well, ending my convention tour back in Stockholm at Heroes Comic Con at the end of the year. I met lots of nice people like @gudgurkan, so maybe next year I'll even try tabling at a convention outside of Sweden!

Autopsy

I was introduced to UK small press Koguchi last year, and this year I contributed to their genre anthology Koguchi; the first two issues of the anthology, Arcana Dawn (science fantasy) and Neo-Future (cyberpunk), were crowdfunded this spring.

Koguchi: Neo-Future, which will be published early next year, includes the story "Autopsy" by me and @mykellpledgerart, in which a mechanic is sent to a walled city to retrieve a machine component but discovers that her mission is somehow connected to the secret history of human clones.

The Hermes

I started writing my second book, The Hermes, which will be illustrated by Tim Fischer (who I previously collaborated with on "Lápida") and published by Kinaye (in French, as L'Hérmès); English-language publisher to be determined.

The Hermes is set in 1930, when Abelard Berg, captain of the barge Hermes, comes to the city of Les Îles Nobles to smuggle out some goods; Berg meets two children, Luna and Marvin, who are swept into his venture. Can they escape the city without being caught?

Very excited to be writing the book and working with Tim again!

I think Jin had a good fashion sense even before the games. his dad was the mayor of District One so I think he's always had to dress "presentable". I don't see him as a fashionista, but he does care about brands. if he was in our modern universe, he'd be the type to find Gucci very tacky and obnoxious but love Hermes and Ralph Lauren. classy and understated. honestly very "old money, country club" vibes. jin is a nepo baby lol

Jimin

there are two jimins - the one at the capitol and the one at district four. when he's in the capitol, he wears whatever his designer team arranges for him. he has lots of sponsors, and many are fashion brands so he's obligated to wear clothes or accessories from those brands. his team likes to market him as very chic and clean, lots of suits with the undershirt open to show his chest. however, when he's at home or just being himself, i think he's very in touch with his ocean roots. i see him in a "surfer boy" aesthetic, pearls, seashells, and free-flowing tops. in my universe, District Four is like a Florida or tropical place- so it's always sunny and hot.

sweater vests. turtle necks. slacks. this is it. mainly in black, sometimes blue. very dark academia. does not really understand fashion and just wants to look as smart as he is. feel like he'd also be one of the victors who fired his designer team right away because he didn't get the point and hated being treated like a doll. sometimes he wants to try out diff styles but ultimately I see him being a creature of habit and being like "nah"

Hoseok

poor boy just wants to be cozy and warm. I think I had his games take place in the Arctic? so I think he'd be like really hypersensitive to the cold now. he feels one chill and he'll want to die. he would love oversized sweaters and cardigans. I can see him wearing lots of neutral colors too, browns and creams with hints of green here and there. Very 'coffee shop boyfriend' vibes. also think he's such older bro that he'd carry a lil fanny pack or bag all the time, he carries little snacks and stuff just in case his siblings ever need anything

Taehyung

tough one. I don't think he'd give a shit tbh. but he's from 11 and it's all about agriculture, so i feel like farmer vibes? like boyish cottage core. feel like he likes loose shirts as well, tae doesn't like feeling constricted so no tight clothes. also feel like he loves rolling his pants up and walking around barefoot. country boy to the core.

Yoongi

hoodies, loose fitting and oversized. likes beanies too. I think he has bad blood circulation and as a kid didn't get great access to food, so he's prob anemic and smaller than his Victor counterparts. a lil insecure about it so he covers it up with baggy clothes. another one that prefers darker colors like grey and black. capitol ppl are known for their colorful clothes since they can afford them, and yoongi isn't tryna associate with that.

Jungkook

i never made a victors revenge jk since i didn't know if i was just going to make it qq jk when he won the games lol. either way, i'm sticking with district two for him. so def a career and def a lil cray. i think he'd enjoy looking as intimidating as possible, fully leaning into the 'bloody thirsty career' reputation he has. I see him getting tats and piercings and wearing things like leather jackets and steel-toed boots. probably like "grunge" or "cyberpunk" aesthetic??

 CALIGO a cyberpunk pop band flourishes from their small hometown into a messy sensation. drawing inspiration from vkei bands such as buck-tick and acid black cherry, and western bands like fall out boy and bring me the horizon: CALIGO is one-of-a-kind in sound and passion. their sound drowns you, while resurfacing you as you gasp for air.

 lead singer, HERMES LEE, writes lyrics that tell a story from beginning to end. leaving you questioning where it starts and where it ends. but there's no doubt that there's a story to tell with how they bare their heart out on stage, the instrumentals carrying their saccharine voice and belts to the crowd who heartfelting-ly sing along.

Do you have any one-line ideas of any crossovers/AUs/heavenly, like fleeting thoughts that crossed your mind once, like @ someslothcheese's ao3 prompts? Basically something you felt was not enough to even share.

I have a list of these in my notes :0 (mostly zeroyalchaos, shockingly. Also a genuinely surprising amount of Kara and Chilled?)

- Kara as the Goddess of Death, Chilled as a new god (like Hermes - travellers, thieves, etc.) and they bond over people asking for safe passage to the afterlife

- Slack crushing on Skadj cuz he’s an arsonist

- PR1 detective AU, Ze is asked to step in on a fraud case even tho he only works murders but Chilled gives him puppy dog eyes, Kara as a forensic scientist, the case turns out to be mafia related

- mcyt/PR1 crossover, a café run by the Evo crew that has a pride party night every month that Shubble brings her PR1 friends to. They vibe and have a good time

- Lethal Company angst. Possibly SkadjATK. Possibly ZRC

- “You said ‘Kill him or I’m gonna kill us both’, what kind of terrorist shit is that?!” - chilledchaos quote (I don’t remember what I was gonna write with this but Chilled did actually say this once)

- Tay and Jeremy bond over rage and murder :)

- “I know,” Ze whispers, tightening his hold on his husband. “But I want you to know that I a hundred percent believe everything I said about you.”

Chilled squints at him. “Twelve years ago you called me a piece of shit garbage who kills for money.”

“I’m almost certain I didn’t,” Ze deadpans.

- But it’s one of those rare moments where Chilled is quiet. It’s not like he doesn’t have anything to say - Chilled ALWAYS has something to say - rather he doesn’t feel like speaking right now, which is uncommon and at times, unsettling.

- Kid Cheesy AU where Kara, Ze and Chilled share custody of him but Ze and Cheesy have the same laugh and Chilled ends up falling in love with him whoops. Also they’re all best friends because I said so

Hey so as a new DM getting into WoD (coming from D&D and Cyberpunk) where would you recommend starting for reading up on Mage?

I’ve got both VtM and HtR and there good sourcebooks but I’ve been told Mage has all the ‘deeper’ lore. I just don’t know where to start.

[Note: I answered this question in typical long-winded fashion, so you can skip to the numbered list at the end for a somewhat shorter summary of how I’d get into Mage, if you prefer. Also, this is my own opinion— I can’t promise it’ll work, but I know it worked for me, at least when I started actually doing it intentionally.]

This is a relatable problem!

So, I got into Mage by picking up pieces of the lore from a distance over the course of a couple years, and then diving into the M20 corebook while they were offering it for free during the pandemic. I read the intro, then skimmed the book, with a focus on parts I was interested in, and over the course of the past three years I’ve read almost all of it by now. It’s almost 700 pages of weird, dense material and while if I wanted to I could have gotten all of it read much quicker, it still would have been quite the task, which is not ideal for a game.

Alright, how should you do it then?

Okay, first, put aside the notion of “deeper” lore at least for the moment. Don’t let the fans of Mage who wax lyrical about how important and wild and vast the implications of the Ascension books are. While Mage does get pretty out there, it does not and should not overshadow the other games. Gehenna’s still coming, for instance, don’t let the incident with what was *maybe* the Ravnos Antediluvian take away from that.

Seriously though, it’s easy to get intimidated by certain Mage fans. They can be kind of a snobby crowd, frankly, and not just in the fun pretentious way. Enjoy it at you own pace, those guys think they know the game— nah. A lot of them just know the metaplot, and that does not a game make.

Approach Mage more like an all you can eat buffet, and you’re getting from it what you want. As much or as little, as big or as small, as focused or as broad as makes sense for your interests. You take the parts you want as you like, and go from there. There’ll be time for the rest when you’ve found your footing.

So, if I were to do it all over…

1st— Get ready to take the plunge—but carefully, and with some intent. Steel yourself with some deep breaths, and grab a book to get started with. I do actually recommend the 20th Anniversary Edition to get started, but it is a lot, so if you’re worried about getting distracted or overwhelmed, Revised should work too. (I personally think Revised is just a bit too limited in its take on the setting, but that’s really subjective.) Don’t start reading quite yet, though, just pick the book you want to start with.

2nd— Be ready to ask questions. I’m putting this up early not because you’ll necessarily have questions immediately, but it’s always intimidating to be confused and have questions, so just know that there are folks in the community who will be polite in answering questions.

I’ve had luck with r/WhiteWolfRPG in the past, but I haven’t dipped in there for a while so they may have gotten worse. The Onyx Path forums are generally fairly nice, though. And here on Tumblr I have to think there are people, though I’m new here. Still, I can speak for myself and say— I love questions!

3rd— Alright, here’s what I’d do now. Read the first chapter or so, enough that you know what this setting even is, and then it’s time to find the parts that you are interested in specifically. For example, I’m really into alchemy, hermeticism, that kind of ceremonial magic, and mashing that into a modern setting— playing someone trying to do this old school classical wizardry in the 21st century, basically. So I’d jump into the relevant sections of M20– I’d read about the Traditions, the faction most into old school magic, then read specifically about the Order of Hermes, the Verbena, maybe a few other factions like the Children of Knowledge and the Hollow Ones, and go to any linked relevant sections I’m interested in, such as the write-ups for Alchemy and High Ritual Magick in M20. I would recommend doing something similar. If you don’t know where to start at all, I’d recommend looking at paradigms, the Orphans, and maybe Avatars. That’ll give you the kind of basic introduction a newly-Awakened mage would get. Also, probably stay away from the Umbra for now. It’s got a ratio of weirdness-to-size that makes it a tricky thing to grasp, at least at first.

At this point you might still be confused, just cause it’s a lot to reckon with, but you should be grounded in the details that you plan on working with. You’re building the foundation, hopefully in a way that’s not too confusing.

4th— Something I find helpful for getting to know a game is making my own character, so when you’re comfortable with that notion, I’d suggedt getting a character sheet and finding the section for character creation, then going through it and filling out that sheet as needed. You may never play this character, but in doing so you’re getting a feel for how the mechanics and setting interact, and you’ll probably start to get some knowledge of the basic Mage-specific rules. If you’re like me, you’ll naturally be curious enough to check out those sections, but even if not you’ll still learn more.

5th— Now I’d say to just widen out from where you are. This may take the form of just reading the whole damned thing now, straight through, but for me with M20 that was still kinda scary. There’s just so much. So I read about the things I felt that I knew about, but only vaguely. The Technocratic Union, the nature of Paradox, how paradigm works mechanically, Avatars, that sort of thing. At this point you’ll likely be familiar with your corner of the setting and get a view of how it fits into the wider whole. If you’re feeling ambitious, you might jump into some crossover stuff— what happens if a mage drinks vampire blood, or how werewolves and the Awakened fight over Caerns/Nodes… I was a little overcautious about weaving in the larger World of Darkness when I was getting started, but I know that’s how some new players get a foothold.

(Optional 6th— On that note, I find Mage is a lot easier to run if you’ve gotten some experience with other WoD games. Maybe run a one-shot of one of them, or even a quick mini-chronicle, just so you know the basic rules and find your grove for Storytelling in the setting. You might feel you’re ready to just dive into Mage, and you might be! But I learned that I needed more practice, so just a word of advice.)

I wish you the best of luck! You’re stepping into some weird and wonderful stuff— magic, mystery, and madness, all that— and it takes some time. I hope you enjoy your journey, and remember, it’s never wrong to have questions.

“A water would be nice, thank you.”

Aja would make time to truly take in her surroundings while Minami was away. A look into a studio was a peek into an artist’s mind, their heart. For Aja, it was the best part of meeting an artist-- not just to see in person what they wish to present, but also to catch a glimpse of what else they have to offer, and what they might be keeping to themselves. Minami would make several statements, but her studio would be making statements of its own.

Minami had already begun making statements of her own. Her red lace dress made apparent that she was intent on making an impression. Though what kind? There were multiple ways a curator could receive it. Perhaps Aja received it in a way Minami did not intend.  Or did. Aja smiled, stealing a glance or two before casting her attention to pieces she had come to see. She wasn’t invited to take a closer look, but she stole a few paces forward anyway, letting her eyes trail over the details of each painting. The stark difference between seeing them online and seeing them in person was worth the flight across the sea.

“I suppose I don’t have to tell you that if we were to accept you and your work, you must come prepared with a mission statement,” Aja paced slowly from piece to piece. “You’ll have to describe your process, your objectives, your motivations, so on and so forth. And in this very specific case, you’ll have to defend against accusation of copy-machining and plagiarism.”

Aja turned back to Minami. “But I’m sure you’re accustomed to this already. After all someone with your talent and a clear sense of determination would have neither without having to combat such indelicate interactions in the past.”

Aja took a few strides back. “So. Whenever you’re ready, walk me through it.”

Minami, as a rule, was extremely hard to phase. She had held her own against some of the most frightening people anyone could think of. But as Aja paced along in front of the paintings she felt something against which she had little defence; someone was genuinely and incisively looking at her work.

Once again Ru shot her a look from the centre of the Primavera and she gathered herself together. For just a moment she let her eyes take in the curator, analytically. She was young, for a start. Most of the professionals in the gallery business Minami had dealt with were not. Also, she was a woman and she was direct, slightly formidable even. But that had never put Minami off anything.

She went to the little fridge under the work bench and pulled out a bottle of mineral water, passing it politely to her visitor. She strode up to Primavera, her favourite of this particular triptych.

     “I can quash the copyright concern immediately.” She gestured to the figures. “Certainly the poses and positions evoke the original work, but you will not find a single identical brushstroke and every figure is drastically different to the original. This is not plaigurism. It is honest and open homage.”

She paced with a ballet like ease (even in her platform heels) in front of the canvas, her fingers moving in a diaphanous gesture along the bodies of the figures without ever touching the canvas. Something about the lines of a painting brought out the dancer in Minami. It made something primal in her sing.

      “Take the three graces on the left side here, Sara, Haru and Mia.”

Impulsive pjo (more like solangelo again) x kpop hcs i just thought of:

I’ve talked abt my kpop x pjo hcs already but to add on, Will doesn’t seem to be a kpop fan like the rest of the Apollo cabin. I mean, at the VERY least, he’d be a casual twice listener and probably most definitely listens to txt’s whole discography (like their songs seem “sunny” or give a “sunshine vibe” on the outside, a little silly even but the lyrics are pretty dark and depressing. And hopeless romantic, istg txt’s discography is made just for will. Source: trust me bro). But other than tht, he’s not too into kpop.

Nico on the other hand, he’d love skz (idk why, he’d vibe to them and i hc tht he’d be into noise music), atz (heavy on atz and no im not projecting, i genuinely think he’d like them bc they’re pirates lol and i think he’d like cyberpunk, silver lights and their whole discography. He’d would def get emotional over turbulence, not too late, take me home and mist), dreamcatcher (for obv reasons) and red velvet (dont ask, it just makes sense).

He won’t be like a stan or be as hyperfixated as me (lol) and won’t really talk abt it with anyone else. i see this as something he keeps to himself yet not really hide it if someone brings it up (???) but he’d know abt their cbs and watch their performances with Will (when he gets the opportunity).

In general, I’ve always hc tht the apollo, dionysus and aphrodite cabin as mostly kpop fans bc majority of the idols are either from the apollo, dionysus or aphrodite cabin. With a good amount also in the athena, maybe zeus, nike and hermes cabin.
