lullaby & goodnight. ⌇ lrh.
Tumblr media
A/N: i have a soft spot for dad!au’s & the idea of luke being a father makes me super soft, so i wanted to indulge in my silly little fantasies.
summary: in which, your daughter is having a hard time falling asleep & luke knows exactly how to center her.
word count: 1,000+ words.
“Ollie, baby, please–”
“No.” The young girl pouts, arms crossed over her chest with her favorite plush toy held in the grip of her tiny fingers. “No, no, no!”
“Ophelia, you need to sleep. How else will you have the energy to hang out with Daddy tomorrow?” A rhetorical question, yet you hope your five-year-old has the understanding and sense to answer it; Ophelia was incredibly smart for her age and seemed to be quite mature, however, she was a child and children will do as they please, no matter how old of a soul they already seem to be.
The tiny blonde shakes her head dramatically before looking away from you. At this point, you’re ready to admit defeat and let her stay up for as long as she wants, or at least, until she tires herself out doing whatever it was that she wanted to do. However, you wanted to sleep and your husband was in your home studio, finishing up a tune that he’d been working on for days, so grabbing him to help with your stubborn daughter was, in your mind, out of the question. You couldn’t leave her unattended, you’d feel like a shitty mother if you did and Ollie was too young to be on her own.
“Is there anything I can do to help you fall asleep?” You inquire, eyebrows knit together in hopes that there was a solution to this scenario. You’re met with large, doe-like eyes, the hue of them a replica of your own. Your daughter’s gaze is innocent, yet a hint of mischief lies in the depths of her irises.
“No, but Daddy can.”
Of course. Ophelia was a Daddy’s girl, through and through. She and Luke shared a bond unlike one you’ve ever encountered and had each other wrapped around their fingers. Whenever you three had family outings, there were moments where you felt like you were third wheeling; it was simply your husband and your daughter’s world and you were just living in it – happily, obviously. You don’t think you’d have it any other way. Sharing life with the two of them was one of the greatest gifts you’d ever received.
“Ol, Daddy’s busy right now.”
Ophelia wasn’t having it. She would not take ‘no’ for an answer, “I can wait for him!”
You blink twice, unsure of what to say to the child in front of you. The sound of a door opening and closing gains your attention, footsteps getting louder as they come down the hall and stop.
Luke pokes his head into the dimly lit bedroom your daughter occupies, a gentle, tired smile on his face. “Ladies,” He greets the both of you, “everything okay in here?” he adds, eyebrows raising slightly.
“Ollie is having a bit of trouble getting to bed.” You reply, your gaze averting from your husband to your little girl, who looks very pleased with herself; she’s about to get exactly what she wanted.
“Oh, yeah? Can I help?” Luke offers, fully entering the room. He sits on the edge of the twin sized bed covered in pale yellow sheets, stuffed animals crammed against the headboard.
Ophelia abandons her plush toy, leaning into her father’s hold as he opens his arms and cuddles her into his chest. A lighthearted chuckle leaves your husband’s lips, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he looks at you, “Sorry, baby. I guess I’m what she needed.”
“Figures,” You sigh, a grin pulling at your lips. “She’s got you wrapped, Lu.”
“Definitely,” He agrees, before turning his attention back to your daughter. “Alright, miss. How can I help you sleep, hm?”
Silence fills the room as your daughter thinks for a brief moment. She’ll milk Luke for all the time that he’s willing to give her, there’s no doubt about that. Doe eyes look up, blinking innocently to really make sure he’s ready to deliver. “Sing to me, pretty please?”
Luke doesn’t waste any time in giving in to her command. If a lullaby is what she wants? It’s what she’ll get. “I can do that for you. Anything you’re wanting to hear?”
“No- wait, can I get comfy?” She asks, pulling away from her father a bit. Luke nods, shifting from his space on the edge of the bed, which prompts you to also get up in order to allow for your daughter to get comfortable under the sheets. Once she’s settled, you and your husband snuggle in on either side of her, wrapping your arms around the girl you both love most.
“Ready, sweetheart?” Luke hums, oceanic eyes peering down at your daughter. He always looks at her with so much love and so much pride, you swear that every time you see it, your heart swells up with affection.
Ophelia nods, her gaze trained on her father as he begins to sing softly, “Take my hand, now and forever…”
As he continues to sing, his melodic voice filling up the space, you watch as the melody flowing from Luke’s lips sends your daughter into a blissful, serene state. Her eyes get droopy as each second passes, the calm atmosphere and warmth provided by her loving parents causing sleep to overtake her. Soon enough, her head is slumped against the pillows, her face slightly buried in the Pink Floyd shirt your husband donned.
Your eyes meet Luke’s when you’re sure that Ophelia is sound asleep, quietly mouthing a ‘thank you’ to him. If it weren’t for him and his incredible knowledge of what your child needed, you doubt she’d be asleep by now. He smiles, blinking sleepily at you before gingerly leaving the softness your daughter’s bed provides, holding out his hand for you to take in order to leave her room.
With a flip of a switch, the dimly lit room is drowned in darkness, save for the pink hued night light plugged into the wall. Luke closes the door as you both exit, then wraps his arm around you and leads you to your own bedroom, sighing dreamily as the prospect of sleep draws closer with each step you take.

Will we still hang out and talk
When I'm no longer in charge?
Oh, dear Luna, I hope you like your name
I hope you let me take a shot with you on your 21st
But shit, you gotta ask your mom first

Having a baby with Luke would include...
Tumblr media
3/4 in the father-to-be series :
Luke ~ so nervous to be a father that he overcompensates for everything during your pregnancy
You were humming to yourself in the kitchen, the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven throughout the air and Luke came in through the front door.
“Honey I’m home!” He called out, and you smiled as he found his way to the kitchen, “Oh you can smell those suckers outside.”
“Sorry, had a craving,” You answered and he chuckled as he wrapped his arms around you, his hands gliding over your stomach.
“I love your cravings,” He murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to the base of your neck, “And I love you. How’s baby Hemmings and Mama Hemmings?”
“Baby is content now that they’ve had some cookie dough, Mama is tired because the baby won't let me sleep.”
“How about I finish baking and you go lay down?” He offered, and you giggled as you shook your head.
“I don’t want hockey pucks Lu,” You replied, and he rolled his eyes but accepted it.
“Fine, but I’ll at least order dinner and pick out a movie. What sort of food are you thinking of?”
“Hmm, I could go for some Chinese or even just pasta. Something with noodles I guess.” You responded, and he nodded as he moved from behind you and sat at the counter instead.
“Two more months baby,” He had a big smile on his face as he said, “I’m going to put the crib together tomorrow and then we can finish painting the nursery.”
“Sounds good to me. Have you ordered the food yet?” You asked, and he chuckled.
“It’ll be here in twenty, think you can make it that long?” He asked. You shook your head then opened the fridge again, looking for some sort of snack until then.
“It seems that it doesn’t matter how much I eat, I’m just always hungry.” You mumbled, grabbing a cheese stick from the bottom drawer and sat next to him at the island.
“Have I told you how much I love you?” He murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of your head and you leaned into his touch.
“Many times, but I’d love to hear it again.”
“I love you, and the baby that you are carrying and the life that we get to live together.” He murmured, “I love your strength and your joy.”
“I love you too,” You whispered, turning his chin so you could kiss him properly.
Other pregnancy things would include -
His head laying in your lap and singing to your stomach
Gasping so loudly when he could feel the baby kick or move at all
Lots of support from his family, including Liz ordering a sweatshirt for herself that says Nana Hemmings on it
Special souvenirs from all the places he would go to
Like an entire shelf of snowglobes or silly stuffed animals
Luke would be ready the entire last few weeks of your pregnancy
Like anything out of the normal he’s trying to rush you to the hospital and you’d have to talk him down every time
Until finally you are going into labor but you’re trying to convince him that it’s not until he’s fully panicking and calling the hospital and his mom and your mom

nothin' but love for you--Luke&Lily oneshot
Tumblr media
Word count: 3.8k (also unedited so if there are errors oops)
Warnings: pregnancy talk
Enjoy! Feedback is always welcome!
•••
You and Luke have planned to tell everyone about the pregnancy at the end of February and ever since you told him he’s become more affectionate and helpful around the house and the kids (which seems impossible). He doesn’t even let you lift the laundry basket because he doesn’t want you to strain yourself.
“Our anniversary is coming up soon,” he mentions one night in bed. His fingers are rubbing and massaging your lower back as you’re situated between his long legs. The kids have been in bed for a few hours after a double feature of Moana and Encanto.
“I know…oh, there Luke,” you groan when he rubs at a certain spot. You feel him smile against your hair. “What should we do?”
“Do you want to know my original plan or the revised one?”
“Can I know both?” you ask then give it some thought, “why is there a revised one?”
“Because the original plan was before I knew about this little bud,” he pokes the side of your belly. “And it involved flying.”
“To where?” you sigh, loving the rotation of his fingers.
Your doctor recommended you stay home and in the area for this pregnancy considering how the last one went. You and Luke were quick to agree not wanting to repeat a fainting episode like in Disney.
“I don’t want to tell you,” he chuckles.
“Please, Luke?” you crane your neck towards his face and bring his mouth to yours.
“We were going to go to the Philippines,” he explains on your lips, each word a kiss. “We were going to go to museums, tours of mansions and experience the beauty of the land and the people…skinny dipping.”
“Mm,” you hum kissing him once more, your fingers latching onto his curls. “That does sound nice. What’s the revised edition?”
“I convinced Ash and KayKay to babysit while I took you to dinner and a movie. Your choice on everything.”
“I choose everything? You spoil me too much,” you smile and he wraps his arms around you, his thumb rubbing at the sides of your breasts through the nightgown you have on. “What about Valentine's Day?”
“That involves the kids. We’ll make heart-shaped pizzas and our own chocolate covered strawberries. Then maybe watch a movie before we put them to bed,” he kisses your cheek. His breath tickles your ear.
“Sounds like a nice cozy night in,” you hum dragging his fingers over and below your grown belly. “What will happen when we’re alone?”
“We’ll go to bed.”
“And?” You hedge, his fingers graze under your nightgown, tickling the skin of your lower stomach.
“I’ll give you a foot massage.”
“And then?” your voice shakes as he teases his finger over your clothed core.
“Damn, you’re wet already, lovie? I’ve barely touched you,” his voice is gruff in your ear.
“I’m pregnant, you know how much my libido is…heightened,” you squeak and rest your head against his shoulder. A small moan slips out as Luke presses onto your clit.
“Love your moans,” he continues to rub at you in circular motions.
You open your legs a little wider and he slips his hand underneath your underwear. He teases a long finger up your slit, coaxing soft whimpers from your mouth. Your body becomes hot and when he kisses your neck you can’t help but lift your hips into his palm.
“There’s my girl…gonna make you feel good, yeah?”
He talks you through it and because of your heightened hormones, you cum on his fingers and he silences your salacious moans with a firm kiss. His tongue is hushing your noises and your whole body is in a tizzy then you’re left panting against him.
You watch through half lidded eyes as he slowly brings his fingers to his mouth and sucks them clean with a satisfied moan.
“I can’t wait,” you whisper.
***
Thankfully you haven’t felt all that dizzy this time around but your cravings have been prominent and a little crazy. For two weeks all you’ve wanted were french fries and chocolate ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. If you didn’t have the chocolate sprinkles, you cried for hours until Luke finally found some. You wanted everything related to potatoes and chocolate.
You’d dip the fries in your chocolate shake. You’d make a potato chip and M&M sandwich. Salty and sweet was definitely your forte and then you started to become more and more tired.
“Mama, are you sick?” Lily asks the day before your anniversary. She came home from school to find you laying on the couch with a migraine cap on your head, it was ice cold and helped alleviate the pain in your head.
“I just have a headache, honey,” you assure her. “What did you do at school today?”
When it was time for your anniversary date you tried to give yourself a pep talk to stay awake for the whole night. Luke noticed how heavy your eyes were as you settled into the car after dinner, your head immediately falling back onto the seat.
“I think we should call it a night, lovie,” Luke says once he’s in the seat next to you.
“No! No, I want to go see our movie,” you sit up a little straighter but he places a gentle hand on your shoulder.
“You could barely keep your head up while we ate our dessert,” he smiles, “it’s fine, really. I’ll still rub your feet.”
“Okay,” you give in all too easily.
Lily and Posy are still awake when you come home, they show you the anniversary cards they made you with Ashton and KayKay and the gift they got you. It was a painting of their footprints overlapping each other. Lily’s was pink, Posy’s were purple and Oliver’s were red. Lily wrote around their feet ‘Happy Anniversary mama and daddy, Love, Lily, Po and Oli.’
“Unca Ash helped paint our feet! It tickled,” Posy told you excitedly.
“I even had them paint mine just for fun,” Ashton smiles holding up a green foot.
“Do you like it?” Lily asks hugging your waist.
“We love it, this is so special,” you kiss her head.
“We’ll hang it right in our room,” Luke kisses Posy and she hugs him tightly then yawns into his neck. “Okay, let’s say goodnight to Unca Ash and Aunt Kay so you can get to bed, bug.”
Luke helps the girls get ready for bed and you give Ashton and KayKay a hug goodbye.
“How come you guys came home so early?” KayKay asks.
“Oh, um, I wasn’t feeling all that well after dinner,” you lie and force yourself not to touch your belly. You still had your big coat on but the couple exchanged a look.
“Okay, well, get some rest,” KayKay kisses your cheek. “And Happy Anniversary.”
“Thank you.”
“Use protection,” Ashton teases with a wink and they head outside the door.
“Too late for that,” you mutter with a small chuckle.
You remove your coat and slip off your shoes. Just as you’re about to take the first step up the stairs, Luke rushes down to grab your hands to help you.
“Do you need help?” he asks when you turn on the bathroom door.
“I’m good,” you shake your head.
You weren’t.
Five minutes later Luke found you asleep on the toilet. He helped you out of your clothes and into your nightgown. Then he removed your make-up and did your skincare routine, his fingers gentle as they massaged your face oil and lotion over your cheeks. He helped you get into bed and covered you with the comforter and a kiss to your nose.
You watch him move about the room as he gets ready for bed and your eyes slowly start to close. You have no idea where this bout of sleepiness came from but it was winning you over.
Your eyes flash open (when did they close?) when Luke climbs into bed next to you. Once he’s settled and shuts off the light, you scoot over to rest your head on his chest.
“I’m sorry I ruined our night.”
“You didn’t ruin a thing,” he says tickling up and down your back. “You usually get tired this time of the pregnancy and I should’ve remembered that.”
“But it’ll be harder for us to spend alone time together once the new baby comes,” you feel tears spike in your eyes. “And we still have to get the crib and stuff set up. We’ll have to rearrange Oliver’s room or try and find a new house–”
“Hey, shh, shh, lovie it’ll all be okay,” he hushes holding you close. “We always find time for each other. After we tell everybody, we’ll get started on Oliver’s room and you know Crystal has a good eye on real estate. We’ll make everything work out, I promise.”
He kisses your forehead and you relax at his assurances.
“Thank you for dealing with me when I’m like this.”
“It’s my job, through thick and thin, better or worse, sickness and in health, in good times and bad–”
“Are you repeating your vows to me?” you giggle into his neck.
“Maybe, but I can sing them to you too if you’d like.”
“I would like that, and so would the baby.”
“Yeah this high, high love that you give to me, is dripping down my hands like honey, it’s all I’m missing…You give me something good, just give me something good.”
***
You were more lively when Valentine’s Day rolled out. You and Luke helped Lily and Posy make their Valentine’s for their classmates. Lily made one extra special for Roman and they loved making their own pizzas. Oliver even smeared his hands in the sauce on his little pizza. Before your next ultrasound you were taking him to get his eyes checked and hopefully he wouldn’t need his glasses anymore.
“Miss Gretchen says we’re going to watch movies and decorate our own cookies at school tomorrow!” Posy exclaims in excitement as she watches Luke cut her pizza into slices.
“What movie are you going to watch?” Luke asks.
“Snoopy’s Valentine’s Day.”
“What are you doing tomorrow, my sweet?” Luke looks at Lily who just fed Oliver a piece of pizza after blowing on it to cool off.
“I think we’re watching The Little Rascals,” she says. “And we’re playing games, too.”
You had a little more pep in your step as you decorated the house for Valentine’s Day. you bought a bunch of red heart-shaped balloons to hang along one wall in the kitchen and Luke even bought sparkling pink juice (fake wine) to have for dinner.
There were props and a bunch of pink and red roses scattered all over the house. You couldn’t wait for the girls to come home and enjoy the little festivities. After dropping the girls off at school, Luke gave you his gift which was a glass rose in a stand that had your wedding date engraved in the base. It was also a music box so when you pushed the button on the side, it played your song. It was beautiful and timeless and it definitely made you cry.
Your gift to Luke were three new satin shirts from the designer he loved so much in Italy. His initials were embroidered in the tag as well.
“These are incredible, lovie,” he kisses your cheek, “thank you. I’ll have to wear these the next time I’m onstage.”
You pause and stare at each other, you hadn’t had that conversation yet of what the next tour and album will look like after this baby is born. Luke has made sure to keep you in the loop as always and since Michael and Crystal have their hands full with Chloe and Maddox, the guys more or less agreed on a small hiatus, or at least a slower process of getting the next album out.
You were all in new chapters of your life and enjoying every moment of it, but you were so thankful to be in the same book with each other. Luke let slip that Calum was thinking of proposing to Rayna over the summer when they went on a trip to Australia.
When the girls are home, you show them the rose Luke got you and they’re completely transfixed. Posy says it’s like the one from Beauty and the Beast. Lily and Posy loved the small photoshoot you had as a family, Sarah lent you an old camera of hers to use.
It was a fun evening with your family making food and then watching movies on the couch until they fell asleep. Oliver always fell asleep snuggled in your arms and Posy was sprawled across Luke’s lap, her arms and feet in different directions.
“Time to put our little cupids to bed,” Luke smiles at each child lovingly. He went back to the main menu on the tv and lifted Posy in his arms. He stretched over to Lily and spoke softly to her until she woke up.
She bumped against Luke’s body as he helped her up the stairs and into her room to change into pajamas. Posy was limp in Luke’s arms and still had her eyes closed as he changed her.
“She’s just like you,” Luke always mused, referring to the times you were a little too drunk or too tired to change yourself.
After you settle Oliver into his crib you check on Lily and her eyes are on you as you enter her room.
“All set, sweetheart?” you ask sitting on her bed.
“Mom?”
“Yeah?” you ask making sure she’s tucked in. Your ears perked at her use of ‘mom.’ She usually calls you that when she has something on her mind.
“Are you having another baby?”
You stop your motions of tucking her in and meet her eyes (Cory’s eyes) and you know she knows.
“How’d you know?” you ask and she sits up a little on her pillow.
“You’ve been eating weird things and have been really tired. Why didn’t you tell me?”
You sigh.
“Luke and I wanted to wait until the end of the month to tell you and Posy. Remember how I was pregnant last summer and then I…I lost the baby?” she nods, her fingers playing with her pink bunny’s ears. “Well, I wanted to make sure this baby was okay before we told you.”
“Is the baby okay?”
“This baby is perfectly fine,” you smile, “I see the doctor every other week to make sure.”
“Can I come next time? To see what it looks like?”
“Sure sweetheart,” you smile. “How do you feel about having another brother or sister?”
She chews on her lip staring at her pink painted nails then she smiles.
“I’m excited. I like being a big sister.”
“You’re the best big sister,” you start crying again because of how sweet your girl is.
“Don’t cry mama,” she scoots closer and gives you a tight hug.
“They’re happy tears, I love you so much, Lily.”
“Po’s out, how’s my sweet doing–what’s going on?” Luke asks entering her room.
“She figured out I’m pregnant,” you explain and his eyes widen.
“She did? How?”
“Because she’s so smart,” you praise and Lily giggles.
“I already knew that,” Luke smiles and pulls up one of her small chairs at her desk. “What do you think about it?”
“I’m happy, but…” she glances between you and Luke, “I think we need a bigger house.”
The three of you laugh together and promise a new house is in the future soon. Lily promises she won’t say anything to anyone, lets out a big yawn and you leave her to go to sleep.
“Well, that’s one person down,” Luke jokes. “Lily is so intuitive.”
“She gets that from Cory.”
“She gets it from you, too.”
***
When you decide to tell Posy you make a day out of it towards the end of February on a Saturday while Lily is at Cory’s. She was fine with you telling Posy by herself. You go to Fun World as a family and pick up cupcakes for all of you to eat. You’re sitting by the firepit at home eating your sweet treats and Luke wipes away frosting from Oliver’s cheek before he speaks.
“Po, your mama and I have something to tell you.”
“What?”
“Well, in the summer I’m going to have another baby,” you say. Posy’s brows furrow slightly (a trait from Luke) as she thinks and processes over your words and then she gasps.
“Will it be twins like Chloe and Maddox?!” she kneels up on her chair, purple frosting clinging to the corner of her mouth.
“No, honey, just one baby,” you laugh.
“And we’ll visit just like Olly?”
You and Luke exchange a look.
“No, lovebug,” Luke says, “I don’t think we’ll be at the hospital like your brother.”
“I hope it’s a boy,” she responds happily and goes back to her cupcake.
Later, while you’re putting dishes in the dishwasher Luke comes up to you.
“You’ve been quiet since we told Posy about the baby. What’s going on?”
“Just thinking…”
“About?”
“My pregnancy with Lily and Posy were perfectly fine. The worst part of it was the morning sickness so I don’t know why it was so hard with Oliver. And then the miscarriage happened but this one…” you touch your belly, “this one is hardly difficult at all. Except for the crazy emotions and cravings.”
“Not every pregnancy is exactly the same, Dr. Wilson told us that.”
“What if something does happen between now and my due date? What if I go into early labor and we do have to be in the hospital?”
“We’ll do what we did with Oliver, be there and listen to the doctors. But, we won’t leave Lily and Posy as much as we did. Whatever happens,” he places his hands on your waist, staring into your eyes, “we’ll handle it together just like we do with everything else.”
***
When you go pick up Lily from Cory and Ella’s that Sunday you and Luke decided to tell them the news of the new baby. You usually have dinner with them and catch up with each other on what’s going on.
“Tell them the news,” Ella smiles at Cory grabbing his hand on the table.
“What news?” you look between the both of them.
“I got a call from a buddy of mine, y/n you know him, Patrick, and he asked if I wanted to be an instructor at the National Guard and I said yes,” Cory explains.
“What! Cory, that’s amazing!” you exclaim. “When do you start?”
“A month, I have to go through some classes of my own but they should be pretty easy.”
“That’s incredible, good job mate,” Luke claps him on the back and Ella is beaming at him.
Luke looks to you and holds your hand in his lap giving you a nod. You heave a big sigh.
“We have some news of our own,” you begin. Cory and Ella look at you expectantly. “I’m seven months pregnant.”
“What?!”
“Y/n! Congratulations!” Ella rises from her seat to give you a hug. “I thought you looked like you were glowing when you walked in.”
Luke and Cory shake hands then he comes by to hug you as well, giving you a soft kiss on the cheek.
“Congratulations,” Cory smiles and sits down. “Why did you wait so long to tell us?”
“We…”
“Well, you saw the magazine article,” Luke says. “We’ve been through a lot, I didn’t even know until Christmas.”
“And everything is going okay?” Ella asks.
“So far so good,” you nod rubbing at your belly and Ella gasps. “Strong heartbeat, a little on the low side for weight for Dr. Wilson said we’re okay.”
“That’s so wonderful,” Ella smiles, “and you hid that belly really well!”
“How’re the kids handling it?”
“Great, Posy is excited and Lily wants to come to the ultrasound appointments.”
“Do you have room at the house?” Cory asks.
“We agreed we’ll start looking after the baby’s born,” Luke says, “we want to make sure y/n and the baby are healthy first.”
“But we definitely need a bigger house,” you laugh. “Four kids and a dog is a lot.”
***
When you tell the boys you’re all together at the house for a nice hangout. Andy and Sarah came by after Valentine’s Day to do a little bit of a photoshoot to announce the new baby. You had them printed on cards and sealed them in red envelopes.
So after dinner and before dessert, you gather them all out in the backyard. Lily and Posy had made cupcakes for them and Posy sat on Ashton’s lap telling him she made one special for him.
Michael and Crystal sat the twins in the little playpen they brought over with Oliver so they could play and interact with each other safely. You couldn’t believe their first birthday is coming up soon.
“Before you eat your cupcakes, Lily has something to pass around,” you say.
Lily hands out the envelopes to each couple and she plops down next to Calum and Rayna.
“Can we open them?” Ashton asks.
“Did we all win a trip?” Michael laughs.
“Open them,” Luke laughs nuzzling close to you, he kisses your ear.
They tear through the envelops, ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ at the cute photos of the girls.
“Wait, is that–”
“You’re pregnant?!” Calum’s mouth drops open.
“I’m pregnant,” you nod.
They’re all suddenly in front of you giving hugs and kisses shooting off question after question. You pull your dress tighter to your body so they can see you’re overgrown belly.
“When are you due?”
“How are you doing?”
“How’d you keep this secret for so long?”
“She’s due end of May or early June,” Luke says. “y/n and baby are both healthy and strong and y/n wanted to wait until after six months.”
“After what happened with Oliver and then the miscarriage…I didn’t want to get my hopes up,” you explained.
“This is such great news,” Ashton says, “another little baby!”
“Quite the babymaker, man,” Calum grins squeezing Luke’s shoulder.
“Yeah, you’re three away from having a singing group like the Von Trapp’s,” Ashton says.
“I don’t think we’ll have that many,” Luke shakes his head.
“Yeah, after this one we’re done,” you giggle holding onto your belly. “Oh, she’s kicking, who wants to feel?”
Crystal volunteers and you guide her hand to the spot. She smiles warmly.
“I’ve missed that feeling,” she says, “so you know it’s a girl?”
“I think it’s a girl, I’ve had a lot of the same cravings and symptoms as I did with the girls.”
“We won’t know for sure until it’s birth time.”
They’re all so happy for you and enjoy the cupcakes while asking questions and gazing at the photos you took. You shiver a little and Luke pulls you against his body, one hand on your belly.
“Getting tired?”
“A little, but I’m okay,” you smile. “You?”
“I got nothin’ but love for you, lovie,” he smiles giving you a kiss. You lace your fingers with his on your belly, your rings clinking together.

we’ve already established how logan doesn’t get much attention because he’s a middle child, so how about he gets suspended or something for fighting a kid who was picking on him and they all get into a blowout fight at home and logan says something like “you never cared before so i don’t see why it’s a big deal” or whatever you think is best and it kinda shocks cal into realizing like yeah i really haven’t been super present with him and then you can take it from there
Teenage angst is my absolute favorite thing. Especially when it comes to my little Logan. Enjoy!!
Calum had been working in the studio when his wife busted through the door, surprising the absolute shit out of him. Quickly, he took off his headphones and questioned her silently. “Logan got suspended.”
“I’m sorry?” Did he hear that correctly? It was only three weeks into the school year. It was the first year that Logan and Aiden were not in the same school. Aiden had graduated in May and was preparing to move up state for college. “He got, what?”
“Suspended, we have to go pick him up.” Calum was still in shock, she was moving, but he wasn’t, “Now, Calum.” She said sternly, bringing him out of his thoughts.
They didn’t talk their entire way to the school, or while they walked into the school, or while they were directed into the office where they found Logan sitting. Logan was sitting with his arms crossed against his chest, and he was looking away from his parents. The principle gestured for them to take a seat, and they obliged.
“Thank you for coming on such short notice, Logan is being suspended for a week due to fighting with another student, but do not fret, both students have been suspended.” The principle laced his fingers together over his desk and smiled a closed lipped smile.
That was absolutely the least of their concerns, fighting? Fighting about what? “I’m sorry, there was a fight? Like physical?” She asked while looking at Logan who continued to ignore both of his parents.
The principle nodded, “Yes ma’am, it seems Logan got into a little bit of a tussle with another student today at lunch causing quite a stir in the lunch room. No one was hurt, but it caused quite the disruption so I think it is best to suspend both of them so they can calm down for a bit.” That’s where the conversation died. It was a silent agreement to keep Logan at home until next week.
It was a silent drive home, it was almost eerie, that was until Calum decided to speak up when they got home. “Logan, what happened? Tell us your side of the story so we can understand.” That was the best thing he could’ve said. Could he have said it a bit softer, maybe, but he was confused and angry, so it came out harsher than intended.
Logan tossed his backpack onto the floor and shrugged, “Didn’t the principle already cover that?” His back continued to be towards his parents.
Calum looked at his wife for support, “Logan, we’re not mad, we’re just trying to figure out what’s going on, you’ve never acted like this, you’ve never gotten into trouble, so why now?” She took a step forward, reaching a hand out to her son.
Logan spinning like a flash of lightning caused her to recoil, “You guys never cared before this, why should this be any different?” Again, he turned, but in the other direction and ran up the stairs to his room. Both Calum and his wife flinched when the door slammed shut.
Hours passed, it had been almost silent in the house, aside from the occasional ‘what do you think happened?’ usually followed by a shrug from the other person. After another few moments of silence passed, they locked eyes and with a silent agreement, they made their way up the stairs towards to closed door.
Silently, they argued over who was going to knock, Calum ended up being the one to knock after his wife pushed him into the door. He grimaced at her as he knocked a few more times after his noisy first announcement. There was a quiet voice on the other side of the door inviting both of them into the room.
When they made it inside, Logan was slumped in his chair, a video game chaotically playing on the TV in front of him. Calum looked back at his wife and she nudged him forward and his cleared his throat before approaching his son. “Can you please tell us what happened today? Your mom and I are worried about you.”
Logan scoffed and without tearing his eyes off the TV in front of him answered, “Why would you be worried? You’re barely home, it’s been like that since I was a kid.”
It was at that moment that Calum and his wife looked at each other like they completely understood everything that was happening. Calum grabbed another chair and sat next to his son, “Aiden told us a few years ago that there were kids picking on you, were these same kids the ones that caused todays fight?” Logan aggressively pressed the buttons on his controller and Calum took that as a ‘yes.’ Calum sighed, he knew exactly what was happening. “Aiden wasn’t there to protect you, I’ve never been there to protect you, you think that no one cares about you.”
Logan’s face visually dropped for a split second before he intently went back to his video game. Calum stood up and grabbed his wife’s shoulders, “Go downstairs, I’ve got this.” His kissed her cheek and shooed her away before turning back to Logan. Logan’s eyes darted towards his dads before he pretended that all of his attention was on the video game. “Do you remember the weekend Aiden went on the trip with your mom for school? It was before Bailey was born, before we even knew Bailey was going to happen.”
Logan looked at Calum and pulled his eyebrows together, “Yeah, what about it?”
Honestly, Calum couldn’t believe he remembered, it was nearly a decade ago, but at the same time, if Logan was dealing with Calum being gone then, then he’s still dealing with it now. “You felt the same way back then as you do now, and you were 5.” Logan paused long enough for his character to die in the game. Calum smirked before taking a seat next to him again. “You asked me then why I couldn’t stay home, and I told you that to take care of you and mama and Aiden, I had to be gone for work, do you still understand that?” Logan’s swallowed and Calum continued, “I know that being the middle child isn’t easy, it makes you feel like no one cares about you because suddenly everyone’s attention is on the baby, or whatever else, but, Logan, we still love you.” Again, his character in the game died. “I’m sorry it’s been rough without Aiden, maybe your mom and I can get you transferred to a different school.”
“No,” Logan’s protest startled Calum, his head snapping towards his son, “I mean, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen. I am still getting picked on, I didn’t think you guys knew about it, you never made a big deal out of it.” Logan slunked back into his chair.
“Logan, we never made a big deal out of it because Aiden told us he had control over it. It’s our faults for assuming that this year would be different. What can we do to help?” Calum rung his hand together and looked at Logan who was already shaking his head.
It took a few seconds after he stopped shaking his head to form his thoughts, “These kids at my school make fun of me for having a dad who travels for a living, they tell me I basically don’t have a dad since you’re never here,” Calum’s heart sunk, “And I know that’s not true, because I know how you take the time to call me or FaceTime me, or take a red eye flight to be here for my band concert, or whatever, but all these…” he paused, “…Fucktards…” he looked at Calum apologetically, but Calum allowed it, “…see, is that you’re not always here.” Logan took a breath, “What happened today was one kid went as far to say that mom was cheating on you because who could be left alone that long, but I see what mom does without you, she cooks us dinner, she wakes us up in the morning, she makes us breakfast and lunch and then goes to work. She works her ass off, dad, and I just couldn’t listen to some kid who knows absolutely nothing about us talk that badly about my mom, and you too!” Logan was getting passionate at this point, sitting forward and dropping the controller to his gaming console on the ground, “I didn’t mean to hit him, it just happened!”
It was hard, but Calum controlled his laughter as he pulled Logan in for the tightest hug he could’ve given the kid. “You’re not in trouble, you did the right thing, you stood up for your mom and that’s all that matters.” Logan nodded into Calum’s shoulder, “Why don’t you go downstairs and give your mom a hug and tell her you love and appreciate her?” There was little to no hesitation before Logan stood up and made his way out of the room. Calum sat back and ran his hands through his hair, proud of his son, and the kid he was becoming.

~4 Years Later
The true madness of this time of year, outside of the holiday craze, is Calum having a full house with two kids now who are home all the time. You take off from work to be there and Calum takes days to work from home to help as well. Though this year in particular is fuller than others with new music on the horizon. But Calum enjoys it nonetheless. You follow behind Calum as he pulls up the rear of the band. Though normally, Calum took radio interviews and his work solo, he’d ask you to bring the kids along. As Calum called it, he wanted a “Take the kids to work day” and today would be light enough for interviews that Calum could tote them around the radio station, but still handle most of the interviews solo. There is one interview towards the end of the day, that Calum did want both boys to sit in with him for and the prospect of helping Dad with his work made Amiri and Arran ecstatic.
But currently, this interview is one that Calum has to do by himself. As he settles into the cushioned chair, he throws one last glance back through the glass windows of the room. Amiri waves, a big grin lighting up his face. Calum waves back before traveling up to find your face. You hold onto Amiri’s hand and still carry Arran on your opposite hip. But your smile is still big and then a moment later, you’re leading two duo of kids away back towards the green room that the boys were just in before settling in for the interview. He can see you’re talking but he can’t hear the words. Amiri gives one last wave but a thumbs up and Calum returns with a kiss thrown in his direction.
“Welcome back,” the host starts. The voice is big and chipper in Calum’s ears, but he’s only ever focused on you and the kids. “We’re in the studio with the hottest band still even after a four year hiatus, 5 Seconds of Summer. Welcome back boys.”
“Oh, thanks for having us,” Ashton replies with a smile.
“You four are back in a big big way. And some of you have major additions to your crews, family and things, Calum, in particular,” the hosts teases.
The sound of his name gets Calum to turn around fully. “Uh, yeah,” he laughs, readjusting the headset.
“So we’re up to two baby boys for you. How does it feel? Any plans for more?”
“It’s-it’s great,” Calum starts. “My spouse and I- we put the kids first really with things. So it’s sort of easier that we’re on the same page and uh, baby two definitely is easier in some ways but it also makes things a bit more challenging. Balancing out the attention can sometimes be tricky. As for more, unclear. Two was our sort of max.”
“You’re crushing it,” Luke cuts in. His tone is colored by his own awe. “This man will be on a Zoom call with the one of them on his hip, fixing lunch, dealing with a juice spill, a dog and still like actively participating. He’s like a real life Superman or something.”
“Sounds like quite a full day for you, Calum,” the host tacks on. “Care to tell us more about that?”
“The days are quite full,” Calum agrees with a laugh. “But I wouldn’t get anywhere with my spouse or the support of these fellas. When I just need to be a dad that day or just need to be a husband, like I have to take a step back for my kids or my spouse, they understand. So it’s nice to have that support. These men have been integral in me being able to be there for my kids, for me to be Superman.”
“I love my nephews, man!” Michael chimes in. “They’re so fucking cute and I don’t know how you say no to them, Cal. Like they’re just so little and adorable.”
“Uh, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes they just win. Like when it’s an extra cup of juice after dinner or something, you just let them have it,” Calum laughs.
“Ah, that’s the secret to parenting,” the host laughs.
“Just one of the many,” Calum returns.
“So we’ve got kids, dogs, juice spills, and we’re getting new music. There’s been rumors around the mill that a certain single might get its live debut here at Jingle Bell Ball next week? Hmm, what about that fellas?”
“Did you hear about this?” Ashton asks, looking at the other guys. “I must’ve missed that one.” He says it with a grin, so everyone understands the playful tease to the statement.
The rest of the interview goes well and in the breaks between interviews, Calum pokes his head into the greenroom. Amiri looks up from the sound of the door opening. “Hi, Dad,” he greets, pushing up from the table. It looks like he might be drawing but Calum’s not entirely sure before he’s wrapping Amiri up in a hug.
“Hey, buddy. What’s going on here?”
“Drawing,” Amiri returns. “Alphabet is next too!”
“Hmm, yes, definitely got those ABC’s in too, kid.” Calum walks further into the room, Amiri at his side. Arran sits next to you munching on some snacks, goldfish Calum’s sure as the two year old has become adamant about having the snack once a day. Another small thing to keep the peace, to keep sanity. It’s countered with a lot of fruits and vegetables.
“Daddy!” Arran cheers. He only loses two goldfish in the process as they clatter to the floor. You're swift to pick them up off the floor.
“Hi!” Calum returns. “How’re the goldfish treating you?”
“Good,” Arran smiles.
Calum notices a tug at his pant leg and looks down to Amiri. “Yes, Amiri?”
“Bafroom, please. I really gotta go.”
“Okay, I’ll take you to the bathroom,” Calum agrees and pushes forward to kiss you on the cheek and kiss Arran’s forehead. “Alright, Amiri, one bathroom trip. All aboard?” Calum reaches out his hand.
Amiri takes it. “All aboard!”
“Excellent, here we go.”
Arran hands you back the bag of his snack. About half of the goldfish remain. “Done,” he tells you.
“You’re done?” you ask.
Arran nods. “Done,” he repeats.
“Okay. We’ll save the rest.”  You place them back into the backpack you have full of things to occupy and feed the two boys with. Arran watches and spies his normal drawing bag.
“I draw?”
“You want to draw too?” you ask to make sure you understand.
“Pwease.”
The lost ‘l’ sound makes your heart melt just a little and you nod. “Okay, you can draw too.” You help him get set up at the small table in the room, opposite of where Amiri’s stuff still lingers. The moment you resign yourself to stay on the floor as all other attempts to get back to the couch are thwarted by Arran’s insistence that you draw with him, you hear the door open back up.
“You guys ready?” The voice asks. You’re sure it’s a production assistant or someone else wrangling the band for the interview.
“Uh, Calum’s with one of his sons. But once he’s back, we’ll be ready,” Ashton returns.
“I’m with who?” You turn then to the sound and spot Calum approaching just behind the assistant.
“We’re getting rounded up,” Luke returns.
“How many until we can work with you Dad?” Amiri asks.
“Right after this one,” Calum answers, leading Amiri back into the room. He excuses himself around the assistant who’s still holding the door open and gives a quick thanks.
“When your lunch?” Amiri asks. You snicker at the question, but know that Amiri’s dead decision on getting the answer to it. The times you and Calum have gotten onto each other about skipping meals only means that the kids have picked up on it as well.
Calum’s a bit speechless for a moment but walks Amiri back to his spot in front of his coloring. “It’s Dad’s job to worry about you and your lunch, not the other way around.”
Amiri is not satisfied with the answer and puts a hand on his hip. “Dad.”
Calum laughs but squats down to Amiri’s level. “Dad’s going to eat right after the interview you help me with. Be thinking about what I should get okay?”
“Sounds like a plan,” Amiri answers.
“I love you, buddy. So much,” Calum returns, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “Be good while I’m gone, Arran,” Calum warns.
“I good!” the youngest cheers back, the red crayon tight in his hold.
“You okay, babe?” Calum asks you.
“I’m good, love.” It’s only a nod between you two. But you both know everything else that’s to be said behind it. If any of that were to change, you’d give a shout. If Calum needed anything, he'd only have to give you a shout. The two of you are always just a call away. “Go be a rockstar, Dad. I’ve got them.”
“Love you,” Calum whispers before standing.
“I know,” you tease, lightly tapping his calf as he heads for the door. You figure the interview won’t take too long. But you still work to keep Amiri and Arran occupied as much as possible. Arran sticks to depicting his version of a soccer field with him and Calum and you doing drills. Amiri works on a mock up drawing of a bass and you grin knowing what it means. “You excited to give Dad his gift?”
Amiri nods, but it’s not as eager as it normally is. “Yeah, I’m excited.”
“You sound blue. Am I hearing you right?”
Amiri shrugs. “I’m scared,” he whispers.
“You’re scared. Okay. It’s okay to be scared. Do you know why you’re scared?”
“Worry, I fink.” His brows pull together. He’s not quite sure that’s the right word. But the last time he felt like this you and Calum called it that. It feels the same--like the voice in the back of his head keeps telling him what if it all goes wrong.
“Worried. Okay. Do you know about what? What are you worried about?”
“What if-What if Dad doesn’t like it? What if he fink it silly?”
“Bud,” you coo, reaching your head across the table. You leave it palm up for Amiri to take if he wants. “What do you think will happen if he doesn’t like it?”
“It hurt,” Amiri states. “Hurt my feelings.”
“Yeah,” you nod, “yeah if Dad doesn’t like it that does sound like it would hurt your feelings. What else do you think will happen?”
Amiri sniffles just a little, eyes finally flicking up at you. The tears are welling along the bottom of his eyes. “What if he won’t love me?”
“Amiri David Hood, your dad loves you more than you know. And if he doesn’t love you over a bass he doesn’t like that you made for him, I will personally and I mean this 100 percent honestly, kick his ass. And then I will sit you two down and you can tell him how much his actions hurt you way worse than whatever I did.”
“Matua, you said a bad word,” Amiri giggles. “You said we can’t say that.”
You reach into your pocket, where you keep spare change for moments like this. You find a dime and hand it over to Amiri. “It was worth it. But how does that sound? If he hurts your feelings, you can let him know. We won’t accept behavior like that.”
“Thanks, Matua.”
“Anytime, love. Anytime.”
Another few minutes pass and then Calum returns, making a big show of throwing open the doors. “Where are my boys?” he asks, looking into the room. He purposefully looks over your group.
Arran giggles and runs from your arms to Calum’s legs. “Here!”
“Oh that’s one,” Calum laughs. “There’s one more. Where is he?”
Amiri clutches the picture to his chest and you two share a small moment’s glance. You nod over your shoulder to Calum. “Go,” you whisper. “I’m right behind.” Amiri nods, kissing your cheek before heading over to Calum.
“Oh, lookie there, there’s the other one,” Calum teases. You start to clean up the crayons and paper, getting them back into the backpack before standing too. “Hey, Amiri, everything okay?” Calum’s voice is soft as he asks and you’re praying Amiri keeps it together long enough for the surprise. But even if he doesn’t, you know that it’s okay.
“Yeah.” It doesn’t sound super convincing but there’s only so much you can do to help as you get the things organized.
“You can tell me anything, okay, buddy. Dad’s always here for you. Do you still want to help me in this next interview?”
“Please.”
“Okay, bud. Thanks for all your help. Do you want to wear the big headphones for Dad? It’s a big job.”
“I can do it,” Amiri laughs.
“Alright! You think about what Dad should eat after?”
“Vegetables,” Amiri returns. He follows alongside Calum out of the room. Arran’s situated in Calum’s arm.
“Okay, We can arrange for that. Anything else?”
“Fruit.”
“Consider it done,” Calum returns. You follow behind them and down the hallways. Amiri rattles down through his considerations and for the time being, the question seems to have distracted him well enough. Calum settles into a chair and gets Arran on one thigh and you help Amiri up onto Calum’s other thigh. They get a snug squeeze from Calum and laugh. You help Amiri get the headphones on and snicker just a little at the way they almost swallow his entire head.
“They so big,” Amiri calls out.
Calum laughs and gets one ear free for Amiri. “Yeah, they are.” He notices the upside piece of paper. From the backside he can see the green and black and brown indentations and color of the marks and crayons. And he almost asks what it is thar Amiri holding but the question dies as Arran reaches up for the microphone.
“Okay, so, clearly I’m losing here,” Calum laughs.  “Arran, can you let Matua get it right? Do you want to help?”
“Help!” Arran declares.
“Okay, you can help them.” You get Arran’s hands situated on the right angle and then push the microphone so that it’ll catch Calum’s voice and also pick up hopefully Amiri and Arran should either one contribute.
“Does that look good to you, Arran?” you ask.
He inspects it before giving a definitive nod. “Yes.”
“Perfect. Thank you for your help.”
“Fank you,” Arran returns. You settle in the seat behind Calum knowing that you’ll no doubt need to readjust something at some point. Only a few minutes pass before the interview truly starts up and Amiri smiles just a little. He drops his head back to look at Calum around the headphone.
“This strange,” Amiri giggles.
The radio host pauses for a moment and laughs at Amiri’s confession. “I heard it was a big day for you too, Amiri.”
Amiri turns back to the host. “I help my dad!”
“Yeah, how’s that going so far? Have you been having fun?”
Amiri nods. “Yes. Fank you.”
“Oh, so polite. You’re welcome,” the host laughs. “Your brother is here too? How’s that?”
“Arran’s cool,” Amiri returns with a proud nod. Calum laughs at the exchange and gently encourages Arran to say hi if he wants.  The two year old proudly declares his presence and everyone’s laughter bubbles. The questions start to roll more for the band and you watch Amiri closely. He turns his attention back and forth from his uncles as they answer to the host as they speak. His hands pull a little at the paper with the drawing with each question.
“So, how are we feeling about taking the Jingle Bell Ball once again? Do you guys feel like pros?”
“We love playing live shows,” Luke answers. “And no matter how much we do it, we want to make sure we’re, like, putting on a good show. So it’s comforting and like, nerve-wracking all at the same time.”
“Anything new and exciting you four are looking to debut? A laser light show? Maybe some backup dancers?”
The joke lands well and Ashton takes the question to answer. “The band has always been the four of us and about our music, so we want to for the time being to keep it that way. But who knows? The future’s full of possibilities. Though I’m thinking of new kits.”
“Ah, there we go. A good new kit could be fun. I’ve heard though, Calum, you might be looking to add a new bass to your rotation?”
Calum’s brows knit together. “I’m sorry? I don’t--”
“Dad,” Amiri interjects.
“Yes, buddy? You okay?” The confusion of the host’s question falls away as Calum turns his attention to Amiri.
“I told Matua ‘bout this. And I’m scared.”
“Scared? What are you scared about Amiri?”
Amiri reaches for the drawing and flips it over. A forest green instrument stares back at Calum. It looks like a bass, given the number of strings. There’s a brown neck and black and gold floral accents. “I made it. For you.”
“Oh, bud, this is so great. Thank you,” Calum exhales. He kisses Amiri’s forehead. “I love it.”
Amiri points to the door and Calum turns his attention in that direction. You’re already crossing the room to take hold of a case. “No, Dad. I made it. Like a new bass. For you to play wif.”
Calum sputters for his words as the rest of the guys shuffle over as much as possible. You’re careful as you crack open the case and a forest green bass stares back at him. “Buddy, what? You had a bass made for me?” Calum asks.
Amiri nods. “Early Christmas,” he grins.
“Oh my god,” Calum whispers. “It’s beautiful, son. Thank you.”
“You like it?”
“Like it? Amiri, I love it. Thank you so so much.” Amiri nods before the two embrace and Calum looks back over his shoulder to the bass. There’s specs of something like glitter or something reflective that catch in the light of the room. “I’m so blown away. You designed that?”
“Yep! Matua and Arran helped some. But I even paid for it!” Amiri boasts. “
You lean down into Michael’s microphone as everyone in the room seems a bit confused. “I gave him the card and he put the card into the machine and we signed together. So he ‘paid’ for it. But he’s been working hard on this since June. He came up to me after one of your days swimming and said, ‘Matua, I want to make Dad a bass for Christmas.’ And I was like, pick one out from a store that you think he’ll like or have one made. And he was adamant that he wanted to design one top to bottom. So, uh, Calum, all those extra doctor’s appointments and errands were me taking Amiri to the shop to work with the folks to design this bass. We’d spend an hour with them so he could screw in stuff and help them get the paint color right. And I don’t know much about how they actually build a bass. But if Amiri becomes a craftsman, I think we know why now.”
Calum looks back to the bass and is blown away by the fact that Amiri wanted to do something like this for him. “I’m going to eat so many vegetables to make up for this,” he laughs.
The room bursts into laughter. But Amiri knows what it means and he kisses Calum on his cheek. “So many,” Amiri giggles. “Love you, Dad.”
A week later, as the crowd starts to roar, Calum swings the forest green bass to his side and squats down to Amiri and Arran’s level. They give him a fist bump each. The headphones over their ears are to protect their hearing and sometimes Calum wishes they could hear the quick blessing he whispers over them. But he wonders if it’s better this way. If part of the routine is the silent care and love Calum pours over them. You fist bump Calum once he stands up fully and the two of you share a quick kiss.
The track, deep bass and the hint of Babylon, rises and Calum turns back to the band as they give each other one last fist bump and head up the steps of the stage. You catch the bass drum as Ashton settles kicking up. More people working the stage start to bustle about so you pick up Amiri and Arran to make sure they can still see Calum. Today, the Jingle Bell Ball set is the debut of Calum’s new bass and you were halfway anticipating Calum saying he can’t even touch the instrument because of the reason behind it.
But you’re glad he did take it. Amiri beams in your arms, watching as Calum works his fingers over the strings. Every second Amiri spent drawing and helping assemble the instrument matters ten times more in this moment. The set isn’t long as there are many other acts gearing up to follow. You set Amiri down first about halfway through the last song. You readjust your shirt after getting Arran down. Amiri shouts up at you and you don’t quite catch it all. You go to signal to him to give you just one more minute because the last notes are ringing out but instead he takes off. He bolts for the stage and your heart races in your chest. Arran, who notices Amiri taking off, jets off two.
“Fucking hell,” you mutter. Amiri stays at Calum’s side and it takes Calum just a second to realize that Amiri’s there until he notices the crowd giving a big ‘Aw’ as Amiri pats at his leg. Just as Calum gets down to the squat, Arran comes running out too.
Calum looks back over to you. You seem frozen for a moment before you start towards the stage. He signals for you to stay. He thinks you’re apologizing, but can’t confirm it. Kids are kids, he knows. At the end of the day, they’ll do kid things. Calum gets both boys into his arms and then gets over to the rest of the boys to give a quick bow. It’s not easy with both kids in his arms, but Calum dips his head and then carries Amiri and Arran off stage.
“I’m so sorry,” you rush out, coming up to Calum.
He shakes his head. “It’s okay. What happened?”
You reach up to help him out of his inner ears so that they can get packed up with the rest of the gear. “I’m not sure. I went to get Amiri down and I think he asked me something but I couldn’t hear him and then he took off,” you answer, following behind Calum as he steps away from the side of the stage.
“Can you get the headphones off for me?”
You walk behind Calum for a step or two and then he pulls off the side of the hallway. You work the headphones down from Amiri first and then Arran second. You hold the orange and red pairs of headphones in your hands as Calum looks over to Amiri. “Hey, Ri, what happened there? You coming on stage?”
He looks frightened for a moment at the question. “I asked Matua if I could go. I got excited.”
“Hey, no. It’s okay that you got excited. But Matua couldn’t hear you over the noise. You’ve got to stick with them. You shouldn’t run off like that. There’s cords and you could’ve easily tripped and fell. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
Amiri’s eyes widened at the realization. “Oh, I’m sorry, Matua! I thought you said yes.”
You run a hand over his hair, the curls coming out in full force the older he gets. “Hey, you didn’t get hurt. So for now, no harm, no foul.”
“Arran, you shouldn’t run off either,” Calum adds. “I know you want to follow what Amiri does, but I want to keep you safe too.”
“I should stay with Matua,” Amiri interjects. “Sorry again.”
“Apology accepted, dear.” You kiss his head.
“Sowwy,” Arran tacks on as well.
“Apology accepted,” Calum returns. “And in awesome news, Amiri, the new bass absolutely shreds.”
The fear that filled Amiri’s face melts away as he perks up and smiles. “Really?”
“Oh, one thousand percent, it shreds,” Calum laughs. “Thank you again for making it for me.”
“I want to make more things!” Amiri declares. “Maybe I can make cool sticks for Uncle Ash?”
“I look forward to all your creations, Amiri. They’re brilliant. Absolutely phenomenal.” Amiri rattles on about all his other ideas and Calum carries them both down back towards the green room. Arran interjects sometimes with lines from the songs that they sung on stage and the whole trio of them fall into their normal rhythm of laughter. As you stay close to them, you catch the glint of your bands and think about how inside of each of them is one inscription that reads together, till death. And if death means your two kids giving you a heart attack and Calum being there, then you’ll take it all the way to the end.

saw a poll that made me stare at it for a good 2 minutes just because. i had forgotten luke was a white man. categorically. and had to fully recentre myself and be like. 'this is a true fact'. because somewhere in my head i was like 'oh he's from sydney he's like me plus he looks like an amalgamation of all my male cousins i consider him to be like me', me being a woman of colour. but i also forgot. that said male cousins are also all white men
