Mystery/Thriller Monday
Sunshine Vicram is the new Sheriff of her hometown, Del Sol, New Mexico. And, she’s thrown right into it. As well as a missing teenage girl, there’s also a prisoner who escapes custody. Between the two issues, Sunshine has her hands full, and, the small town acquires both a FBI agent and a US Marshal.
Oh, and, I can’t forget to mention that she herself was kidnapped when she was a teen, and, so, between all that and the fact that she’s a single Mom. There was a lot going on in this novel (including a kidnapped rooster too).
Jones is also the author of the Charley Davidson series, and, so, I was pretty sure that this would be a fun read, and, I wasn’t wrong. It was twisty, and turney, and sometimes funny, but, also, while it was thrilling, there was also an underlying care to a lot of the book. And, they mystery was spot on too. Loved all the different parts of this book.

book review || A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones
An end of a series! Already!
I was pretty excited going into this because, after the events of the second book, I thought we’d be seeing a lot more of Levi, but not as much as I would have loved. What we did see though? Swoony, sweet, and hot af. The family feels in this had me awwing left and right, it was so dang cute. The romance in this one hits so perfectly for me that I could find nothing to complain about. Good spice, hilarious banter, and healthy communication when it really matters. Levi apologizing for his concern manifesting as anger? Hot damn, that’s attractive.
As far as the many the plot went in this, it did feel like we had a bit too much going on. The main mystery felt pretty predictable, another wrapping up really quickly and easily, but the final had me in stitches with an adorable ending. That doesn’t mean that the climax isn’t tension-filled and didn’t have me flipping pages as fast as possible. The ending barely lets you breathe as hit after hit occurs.
I did find the writing a little stilted in this one. Jones’ humor is still perfectly my style and always has me laughing. Yet, I felt like a lot of dialogue in this one was a little too structured and didn’t flow well, making it feel unnatural. Along with that, we alternate perspectives between Sunshine and her daughter, Auri, and this was the first time where Auri’s perspective felt more juvenile than her age. Rather than her fourteen, I would have guessed she was ten based on how her dialogue was written at times.
All in all though, I had so much fun with this quick series, definitely a Gilmore Girls sort of cozy mystery with a bit more steam!

#I mainly read slice of life romance and historical#Off the top of my head there’s a few general recommendations#Lovely War by Julie Berry#Bookshop on the Shore by Jenny Colgan#The Gilded Hour by Sara Donati#Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos#those are some of my favourites#also a fan of The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare but it is a tad controversial#there’s like a second tier of my favourites which are more trashy and written kinda badly#but still neat#I’m a huge sucker for romance books about ladies moving to villages in the middle of nowhere#OH#and A Proper Pursuit by Lynn Austin#and This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen#also a big fan of the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones#big big big disclaimer for that one though#a lot of descriptive torture and sex scenes#Wuthering Heights is also always a good read#So is anything Neil Gaiman#though Stardust and Good Omens are my favourites#I could go on and on about books for several more paragraphs
