Finished: Daughter Of Redwinter by Ed McDonald.
This is an epic fantasy with an intricate, well defined magic system and history and you get to jump straight in. I got frustrated with the main character often (because I got way too involved and disagreed with their decisions) but the story itself is compelling and pulls no punches. I couldn't put it down. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

December Book Reviews: Daughter of Redwinter by Ed Mcdonald
Tumblr media
I have to admit I picked this one up due to a post by @torbooks (it was just the cover. Look, I'm very easily swayed by pretty covers.) Raine has the gift of seeing the dead-- which is unfortunate, because in her culture, anyone suspected of necromancy is sentenced to death. When her entire traveling band is slaughtered in an incident involving a dead warrior ghost, a cursed page, and a rival lord, Raine is taken in by warrior monks. Raine is eager to learn the powers that they hold-- and finally find a place after a life of wandering and rejection-- but she must hide her secret talent or die.
Overall, this was a surprisingly good book. Raine's choices aren't always good, but they make sense for the immensely traumatized person she is. I'm not sure I entirely buy some of the political ethics of the book-- the monks of Redwinter have a "for the greater good" ethic that seems to encompass a wide array of atrocities and grant them enormous privileges. I'm not sure I buy the way this is sometimes excused by the narrative, but this is filtered through Raine's perspective, and she's desperate for acceptance. I was also pleasantly surprised by a minor sapphic plotline (Raine is bi).
I'll definitely keep an eye out for book 2, which is due to be published sometime this year. An interesting and worthwhile fantasy read.

Daughter of Redwinter by Ed McDonald - Fantasy Book Review
Series: The Redwinter Chronicles #1Genre: Dark fantasyLength: 327 pages My first Ed McDonald novel did not disappoint. Daughter of Redwinter follows the story of Raine, a young girl who can see the spirits of the dead. This talent has brought her danger throughout her life–to have the grave sight is to live always in fear of a public execution–beatings, stoning, other displays of the people’s…

With that in mind, I decided to change things up from my normal routine and conduct an interview with an author whose work I admire. This will be the first interview I’ve done on my blog, and I’m happy with how it turned out. For the first interview, I reached out to author Ed McDonald…
