My research findings on the production of Wish

Never have I seen a fan community do so much with so little than I have with Wish. And to start off, I want to say that you should watch the movie first before going into this and the Starboy fandom as I believe it to be important on forming your own opinion before moving on as I find most of the fandom to have a negative view of the movie, one I do not really share. I found Wish to be fine. I did not hate it, but I did not love it like I do other Disney animated films. But the many rewrites, drawings and animatics featuring character designs that did not make it far in production have become icons in this community inspired me to do a deep dive to see if I could find where in production these concepts died and why.

To save you a read, this production was a victim of simplicity. I feel that many concepts and story ideas were tossed away due to complicating the story, which was always going to focus on Asha trying to save the wishes of her fellow kingdom citizens with the help of a wishing star. I have read many articles and watched a few deleted scenes from the home release and here are my findings.

Starboy never got far in development as the book states that the team went down "a few blind alleys" that lead them to star having a human design for a period. This is probably the period in time where all the Starboy concept art came from and where a potential romantic subplot with Asha was kicked around. It was.

What did Starboy in was the team's choice to make them a shapeshifter as the team thought the character was way overpowered and thus the story lost a lot of dramatic tension (a choice I kind of agree with). It was here where the design team decided that Star needed an overhaul and brought the Story Development artists in and this is where Starboy died and plush Star was finalized.

There are no official storyboards that feature the Starboy designs.

At the start of Wish's production, Frozen 2 was entering it's final stage of production (this would be either late 2018 or early 2019) and was obviously the main focus for Disney animation not to mention projects like Raya and the Last Dragon, Strange World and Encanto were entering their mid development stages before the shutdown.

The effects of the global shutdown were not mentioned in the book, but I would not be shocked if production was affected by it.

Ariana DeBose has said that Wish did not need a love story as she said that,

“I think we live in a time where things are cyclical, right? And so, it’s good for variance and perspective. Not every female Disney character needs to have a go and ambition of simply finding a man to love her. There are more stories to tell.

"And especially in the world we live in today I think something like Wish, that has a broader outlook that talks about community, is just as important as talking about love. And there are so many different ways to love."

"You do see familiar love, love of friendship" in the movie, including the relationship between Asha and Star. Star and Asha have this beautiful connection with each other and so I think it’s good reminding people that not only we can tell different stories, we can also talk about love in different ways.”(source: Exclusive: Wish’s Ariana DeBose defends lack of romance in recent Disney movies (yahoo.com)) whether Ariana had any say on story or character development is unknown.

7. From what I read from the Art of Wish book, the story was always meant to be about Asha defying Magnifico to fight for the people of Rosas and their wishes.

As it pertains to "At All Costs", a song that many are saying was meant to be a love song between Asha and Star, in an article by Variety(Julia Michaels Wrote 'Wish' Theme Before the Script Even Existed (variety.com), it states that a love song was not in the film at the time of production and songwriter Julia Michaels "wanted to write a song that as a standalone sounded like a love song that could be played at weddings."

Michaels would go on to say, "How cool would it be if we wrote a song that if you listened to on its own, it sounds like a love song, it could be something you could play at your wedding, or be a lullaby to your kids, just something really beautiful, but when you watch the film, it’s the heroine and it’s the villain.” She continues, “You realize they’re coming about this both from various points, one from a very selfless standpoint and one from a selfish standpoint.”

9. In the same Variety article, it was revealed that for some time in 2020, no script existed for the movie, but Julia Michaels was asked to be the songwriter for the movie and that is where she pitched "This Wish" which would go on to be one of the first songs revealed for the movie.

10. the Variety article also had Jennifer Lee, head of Disney Animation and one of the writers on Wish, say that she wanted a song that showed "it felt like to hold someone’s wish in your hand. How do we viscerally understand that when you’re with them, you feel like you’re holding someone’s raison d’être?” that song would end it being "At All Costs"

11. September 9, 2022, D23 Expo in Anaheim California. This is where certain members of the public got a glimpse of the production of Wish. Jennifer Lee, writer and director Chris Buck, and co-director Fawn Veerasunthorn spoke about the movie and showed the first look of the finalized design of Star which ended up being the mute plush model that ended up in the movie. This means there was a 3-year gap where Starboy and the romance side plot were discussed then shelved.

It was also during this show where the public would learn that Ariana DeBuse would voice Asha and that Alan Tudyk, a staple of past Disney animated films, would have a featured role in the movie as Asha's pet goat Valentino, who would be able to talk thanks to Star's magic. It was also at that show where DuBose came out to sing "This Wish" but at the time the song was called "More for Us".

Magnifico was not revealed at the event but was teased as "one of the most formidable foes in Disney history" which is debatable to say the least.

12. 5 deleted scenes in total appear on the Wish digital and disc copies each introduced by head of story Mark Kennedy where he would describe why the scene got cut. One scene shows Amaya assisting Magnifico in his plan, tying into an early concept where she was a villain alongside him.

Another scene had Asha, Star (who in this scene could shape shift and talk) and Valentino try to sneak into Rosas before being spotted and chased by Amaya, once again acting antagonistic to Asha.

A scene had Magnifco gather the people of Rosas to demand Star be given to him, as he had never seen Star in this version, and Asha her friends try to distract him by having Valentino, who in this version had a more Steve Carell like voice, pretend to be Star while the real Star, who was voiced in this version and was designed as ball of light with eyes and mouth, was trying to free the captured wishes. This scene was changed because they wanted Magnifco to be more threatening and instead of asking the people for Star, he would capture Star. Kennedy would go on to say that they wanted Asha and Magnifico to be smart and that Asha would not do a plan that silly, and they wanted the climax to be Magnifico and Asha alone, so they set it on a platform high above Rosas.

The next scene featured an ally of Asha's named Flazino that was cut out in order to shrink her friend group and tied the group back to the seven dwarfs from Snow White.

Finally, there was a scene where Asha and her grandfather scaled a wishing tree with her grandfather Sabino that showcased their bond but also Sabino's insistence that Asha take down Magnifico.

Each of these scenes felt completely different to the movie that ended up being released.

13. It should be noted that Wish released only a short while after the 2023 Writers and Actors strikes, which meant that for most of the summer and fall of that year, the actors could not do any press for the movie and all marketing was done through ads, trailers and merchandise.

14. As revealed in an article for Disney twenty-three, a magazine for gold members of the Disney D23 Fanclub, in the early visual development stage, there was a test scene that Asha was briefly transported to the village from Pinocchio. This was done to see how the 3D character designs would match with the hand drawn, watercolor backgrounds of classic Disney movies.

15. In that same article, Chris Buck said that in regard to Magnifico's character development that they wanted the audience "to see the evolution of a villain, so he's not a monster from frame one". From what becomes of Magnifico I get what they tried to do, they wanted to show how a character falls into villainy even if they're intentions are good. It also stands with the modern writing style of Disney animation films trying to update classics, this time by having audiences start off by kind of liking the villain through their personality alone.

18. The article also briefly mentions that Star "went through many iterations" another hint of Starboy being considered as a final design.

19. In the Art of Wish book, there is a page that shows the script where Asha meets Star and Star is described as a "cuddly, 3D, five-pointed star." This would indicate that the Starboy concept never got to the scripting stages.

20. In Art of Wish, the reason why Star does not speak is because the film makers wanted to stick to a tenet of film making, show don't tell.

21. Star's face was inspired by the mask like face of early Mickey Mouse cartoons.

22. From all readings, it is safe to say that Asha was NEVER considered to be a princess in any of the iterations of the story as some writers felt it to be too safe of a choice and liked the idea of an ordinary citizen going against the established power of the king.

23. During production, the Disney CEO position changed twice as Bob Iger left the company in early 2020 and named Bob Chapek as his replacement before returning to the company in mid 2023. It is unknown if these changes had any effects of Wish's production as it was it stated development as Iger's first tenure was ending but took place during a majority of Chapek's time.

24. When Angelique Cabal, who voiced Amaya in Wish, first auditioned for the role the character in 2022 Amaya was written as a villain while Magnifico was supposed to be the good king. It was when she returned for the callback that Amaya was changed to what she ended up being in the movie. In closing, for fans of the Starboy concept, it saddens me to say that it looks the idea only made it as far as concept art as at the time of writing this, no animated sequences, scripts or storyboards have been released that had Star in a human design or discussed a romantic relationship with Asha. I believe the writing team found a romantic relationship between Star and Asha too complicated for the story and decided to simplify the relationship and design of Star to better suit the plot of Asha going against Magnifico. I am disappointed Wish did not go with the more interesting concepts but maybe down the line we'll get that cosmic Disney romance and a villain couple, it just has to work with the story.

I want to say thank you for those that made it to the end, this movie has been on my mind for quite a while and seeing all the re-writes, drawings and animations people have done for Starboy and Asha has been amazing to see. These works have inspired me to rewatch Wish at some point to see if Starboy could have worked in the movie with the story as is, and even share how I would have changed a few things in the story to fit the character and a romantic subplot with Asha plus an idea on how to bring in Starboy while still staying true to the established cannon.

I do hope others watch and enjoy Wish as from what I have read the team did put a lot of effort to makes this movie worthy of not only the high standards Disney animation has set, but as a piece of the 100-year story telling of the Walt Disney company. Film making is already hard enough as it is, especially in animation, but having to make a movie with an original concept and characters that still pays tribute to 100 years of storytelling is a daunting task and I understand and respect the choices they made when making the film and you should as well.

Cut Content (REARRANGED: Arc 2, Ch. 3)

Because this chapter is completely kicking my ass, let me share one of the many, many sections that I've had to delete from the chapter. It has been a process, TBH. I've now edited out over 15K words and shuffled them into my 'Scraps' file for later perusal/deletion. So, in the time that I've tried to get this thing wrangled, I've basically managed to type up 1.25 chapters worth of content that simply doesn't fit. And this chapter still refuses to come together in a cohesive way. Fun. Lol.

Excerpt 1:

Gojo cradles the shades in his long digits and taps his temple in a telling way.  Right.  His Technique makes his eyes sensitive.  But how much, I wonder? Sensitive enough that he has to wear blindfolds and thick black glass to keep them hidden away for most of the day, if the way he dresses is any indicator. “Then just turn the Six Eyes off for a bit.  Like,” and I pause to mime flipping a light switch, “click.” “Yeah, no.  No can do, I’m afraid.”  But he hardly sounds put off by it.  And he shrugs to capture some more of that ‘don’t give a fuck’ energy he embodies so very, very well.  “They’re a permanent fixture.” And that… that doesn’t seem right, does it?  The Six Eyes are permanent—since when?  In the Hidden Inventory Arc, he was able to turn them on and off at will.  In fact, letting his Technique drop is exactly how Toji had managed to sneak up on Gojo and stab him.  Or maybe I’m misremembering?  Honestly, I’m not sure.  Truth be told, there’s very little that I understand about Gojo, The Six Eyes, or Limitless.  I can’t pretend to know how his Technique really even works, not when it’s a combination of Physics and mystical mumbo-jumbo.  And the Six Eyes had gotten even less explanation. “You could turn them off before, right?  Before the whole,” I gesture vaguely, “thing that went down in your teens.” ‘Thing’, I say, because bringing up the fight with Zen’in Toji and Amanai Riko’s murder like they weren’t awful and formative parts of his past makes me feel icky inside.  So, I leave it up to interpretation.  He’ll know what I mean, anyway.  Again, I show more knowledge that I shouldn’t have, but do.  The man in front of me is used to it now, though.  There’s no suspicion or paranoia anymore.  Just a calm acceptance.  He nods at my query, blue eyes boring into me. “But not anymore?” A shake of the head.  Perfunctory.  Short. “So you’re stuck with them on all the time?” “Pretty much!” he chirps like a bird, seemingly not bothered at all. I can’t help but think about how sad that sounds, to hide his eyes permanently. And, before I can stop it, the question is out of my mouth: “Don’t you ever miss it?  What if you could turn off the Six Eyes again and just be… normal.” I wince at the word.  Normal.  That’s pretty fucking ableist of me, isn’t it?  ‘Normal’… Like having anything less than perfect sight makes somebody some sort of freak.  I lambast myself for my poor phrasing.  And I start thinking of a way to backpedal when I notice his thoughtful expression.  Gojo’s frozen in his seat, staring down at his glasses.  He takes a long moment to think.  And he finally breezes out a laugh. “’Normal’, huh?” he says softly.  “I’ve never even considered it, really.  What does ‘normal’ look like in the world of Jujutsu Sorcery, I wonder?”  He tilts his head and looks up at me, considering something.  “Does something so mundane even have a place in it?  Or is it an impossible concept for people like us?” “I, err, didn’t mean for that to become a philosophical question.” “No.  I’d imagine you didn’t, my curious creature.”  The glasses slide on, cast his haunting eyes in shade.  “You want an answer to your question, Oracle-chan?  The truth is that I don’t think about it. I could wonder ‘what-if’ for so many things in my life.  A hundred things—a thousand things, even.”  Those long pale fingers of his find the notches in the table that he’d left a few days ago.  They sink into the warps left behind perfectly.  It’s like he’d dipped his fingers into wet clay for how well the table has remembered the imprint of them.  “But to do so is to stand idly in place, never moving past those things, never coming to terms with them.  I’d be stuck facing behind me, always, feet chained to the ground.  But I don’t have the luxury to wait around.  I have to keep moving forward and accept things as they are.”

Excerpt 2 (directly related to 1):

But I also know that there’s a deep layer of hypocrisy to this as well.  Because Gojo is stuck in the past, in a way.  He can’t let go of his friendship with Geto Suguru, and probably agonizes over not being able to stop him from leaving.  I don’t know the man well, not now that he’s no longer a 2D character in a manga panel or television screen, but I’m certain that this is one ‘what-if’ that he’ll never leave alone.  I wonder what other skeletons lurk in his closet, what other fixations he purposely buries to keep from becoming distracted by them. And I wonder how exactly he distracts himself. Casual murder, my mind supplies instantly.  And then I realize that I probably don’t want to know if that’s true or not.  Not exactly the healthiest coping technique.  Or most legal.  Or sane.  Maybe he has a secret harmless hobby, like macrame or nude modelling?  Or maybe he secretly paints Picasso counterfeits and sells them on the black market? I don’t know.  Anything other than fighting and killing for sport, I hope. Maybe I need my own distractions, if this night is any indicator--besides what Shoko had suggested.  Because that clearly hadn’t worked out at all.

Why was this removed?

Honestly, because Reader-chan and Gojo aren't currently at the comfort level to be having these kinds of discussions. I think this talk about vulnerabilities is best saved for a little later, when they can actually be in a room together without teasing each other (Gojo) or insulting each other (Reader-chan).

Plus, this scene was running too long anyway, TBH. So this is the fat that got trimmed. Might reincorporate it in the future, but not in this chappy.

Prequel. So there are two cancelled prequel pitches and my idea for a potential Hannibal type prequel show.

John Saxon's Elm Street prequel concept

My little idea for a Hannibal esque prequel. Make it a cat and mouse chase between Donald Thompson and Freddy. We see Donald attempt to catch the Springwood Slasher, all the parents are heartbroken over the dead children and flashes of Freddy’s childhood and how he started. We don’t see Freddy kill the children, we see Freddy talking to and abducting the children and gives the tone that he killed and molested the kids. The last episode of the first season has Thompson capturing Freddy. The second season is his trial. That season ends with Freddy getting off. And the final season is about Thompson and the parents of Springwood hunting and killing Freddy. I would include would be that specific deleted scene that Tina, Rod, Glen and Nancy all had siblings killed by Freddy would be the foundation of it. Maybe even have the jump rope girls be ghosts of his first victims

Peter Jackson's pitch. Peter Jackson's Elm Street 6 was to reduce Freddy to a joke. no longer a threat to be taken seriously, much like how the character was being recognized in the real world at the time. Freddy is now so weak and pathetic that the teens on Elm Street take sleeping pills just to go into the dream world and beat up on him just for fun. Only one teen slips up, giving Freddy the upper hand at the cost of his life. Invigorated by his first kill in ages, Freddy becomes a real threat again, inducing fear and harvesting its energy. Eventually, he gains enough power to hold a police officer hostage in the dream world (and comatose in the real world). This forces one of the lead characters, whose father is a police officer, to enter Freddy's domain, rescue his father, and finally put an end to Freddy.

Freddy vs Jason vs Ash. It's basically the plot of the graphic novel with Ash killing Freddy and Jason being frozen in Crystal Lake. aaand New Line did not want that.

Beautiful Dream. Okay this was inspired by Leon Thomas video. Okay now deleted video. The basic premise is Nancy is dying and the only way she can be saved is Kristen puts Nancy in a "Beautiful dream" in Leon Thomas video, he proposed New Nightmare was Nancy's Beautiful Dream. However in my version it would be this, inspire by this fanfic.

Nancy Lantz has the perfect life. Her parents are both alive and happily married; she has a budding new career as a child psychologist; she has married her high school sweetheart, Glen; and she is pregnant with their first child, Dylan. Unfortunately for Nancy, a sinister phantasm has begun to plague her dreams, and very soon, it will escape into the waking world, threatening to turn Nancy's beautiful dream into the darkest nightmare. This leads Alice Johnson and her son Jacob, Dr Neil Gordon, Maggie, Doc and Tracey banding together fighting to save Nancy and it would ideally end with Nancy landing the killing blow on Freddy.

Deleted scenes - Moments from Meriwether - the voices over the intercom are hard to understand but honestly fun to listen to for the vibes. Would love to be able to concentrate on the cosmic conversation Oroborous had with Caldwell but the concept went way over my half shut down brain.

Interlude 01 - the silver age - oh wow Paul the superhero... Kinda devastating that that could have been him but in the canon timeline he was revenge fueled without any other life or purpose... Poor guy. Wonder who was the controller

Interlude 02 - worlds apart - omg the Llewelyn and Utkin story, I loved that arc! Hilariously up until now I truly remembered being a whole different podcast, somehow did not remember it from the Sheridan Tapes lol. I love the concept of two people in the north and south poles, being only able to communicate with each other, not knowing of the chaos the world has plunged into around them.

Interlude 03 - music of the spheres - oh god Adam 😭😭😭. What a tragic conversation with the jovian that sure hurt. Good thing the crew will save the world and stranding Adam alone in space with a gene bank to fend off all of the aliens and the darkness chasing after him from earth won't happen, right? Right?

Interlude 04 - worlds after - part two of worlds apart, the best post apocalyptic worlds are the frozen ones. Love utkin being asexual and talking about it. Hope he manages to save humanity along with Llewelyn doing her own thing.

B-side 09 - oblivion - oh god what a horrible bit. Who was the person struck in the wall... poor Connor you should've stayed away from ISPHA 😭

B-side 10 - air - Adrian my radio boy! Again, I completely forgot about this episode lol. I absolutely love Amy's manic energy in all these. The 2 first dear Amy's contradicting each other with the whole you're connected to everyone you've ever known and yet you're always and forever alone. Then the third story about Adrian, did not remember that he decided on his own to come to Oslow to search for the ranger and then got trapped there, truly a bad luck Brian lol

B-side 11 - paradise - Bill and Rob having a beach episode in the source, what adventures will they have! Hehe their conversation about Bill possibly being into Ned was cute, now I have a vivid image of both Rob and Ned wearing these hates and Bill just becoming completely flustered.

In summary, In these scenes in Fate Extra CCC, the theory in this sentence means Enkidu but in Tsubasa of Phantasia, King Gilgamesh means Punch.

Because Punch had to choose between her normal life and her path, to protect the earth with Danny before meeting Homura and Sonic for the first time. Punch chose to give up her human form and that's how Hakuno was born and recorded by the Moon Cell later in Tsofph Season 12(Chapter 2 CCC world). Punch's human form sleeps in cryogenically frozen human. Preserved very well like mummification. But for much very long that human form without a soul like nothing but a mere shell eventually developed a consciousness of her own and subconsciously rejected their fate as mere shells. Hakuno was an NPC generated by the Moon Cell. After being created in SE.RA.PH as an NPC, Hakuno, like Twice, somehow gained self-awareness. Unlike Twice, he/she did not regain any memory of a "previous life" due to the fact that the original was an amnesiac to begin with. Believing him/herself to be a normal human, Hakuno unknowingly took over the position of another participant who had died in the preliminary selection for the war. As an NPC rather than a human, Hakuno cannot enter the Moon Cell without being deleted as invalid data, like Twice - however, the Moon Cell requires more time to process the contradiction caused by the existence of the frozen body in the real world, and so he/she is not instantly deleted and has enough time to make a wish.

Gilgamesh together with Sonic hacks the system and investigates Hakunon but it seem Gilgamesh need to make a contract to be able enter to SE.RA.PH as an NPC. Until..

Gilgamesh: You lack manners. A lowly mongrel has no right to look on me without permission. I do not permit you commoners to look upon me, nor to make requests of me, nor to speak to me. By all rights, I should cut you into eighths just for your actions so far. However — In so far as your begging was wretched, it was impressive. Therefore, I will give you one chance. Hakuno: Stunningly dazzling light. Not the light of the stars that fill the breadth of the sky around me, but the shining of the golden knight before me.

And finally, Gilgamesh can enter to SE.RA.PH is an NPC and meets Hakuno for the first time.

"Nameless Master" After Gilgamesh is sure that Hakuno is Punch's incarnation, Gilgamesh make a decision to be her partner and takes Hakuno as his treasure because this is the gift from Punch. You can tell in his relationship with Hakuno, Gilgamesh really love and cares for Punch a lot as he shows his feelings to Hakuno the bond between Master and Servant. "I will become your sword" These are the words that he used to tell Punch why he came with Punch's group on the journey.

Bouns: By ending Gilgamesh's route, Gilgamesh finally shows his true self behind his King Role from Hakuno.

Just curious, what other stories are in the "I prefer the concept art over the final product" list? I often find myself finding concepts more interesting than the final products.

I'm having a bit of brain fog right now, because I've been sick the past few days, so I'm definitely forgetting some examples.

But one (recent) example is Frozen 2. I mean, it's hard to say if the concepts would've made for a good movie, especially because there are so many ideas, so it's hard to tell how it could've worked in one flowing narrative. All I know is that most deleted scenes they've shown us are better than the scenes we got in the movie.

And this is an example of a movie where I do love the final product, so I'm a bit conflicted if I'd wanna give it up to get the concept version, but I would've loved to see what Kingdom of the Sun would've turned out like if they didn't have to scrap it.

First up, we got a test sketcj of Abanny as Maleficent, and a spooky-wooky headshot. Abanny was almost entirely inspired by Angelina Jolie in the live action Maleficent movie, so I could think of NO better role for her to play in this AU than the one she was made for.

Nicole was supposed to be raised by Abanny as well as her two fathers in a sort of big joint adoption found family thing. But they couldn't really get past Abanny's whole Matriarchal forest demigod who eats people thing as something they wanted their daughter around. So they kind of...booted Abanny from the group chat, let's say. Abanny's fury at being banned from having a part in her daughter's life MIGHT'VE been understandable....until Abanny decided ''Fine if I can't be a part of her life then she can't be a part of anyone else's'' and doomed her daughter to a sinister prophecy out of anger. That's the fun thing about Abanny. I can imagine her doing horrible destructive stuff to Nicole out of spite and it's not even that out of character (Any Incredibles AU fans in the audience?)

This was the first Sleeping Beauty AU sketch and it has seen everything (Fnaf reference) and then I just kept thinking about this concept and that's where the rest of this stuff came from. I MEANT to rewdraw this one but uhhhh .....*vague hand gestures* Emotional Issues.

LeFou's horse is named Pompeii btw!!!! She's been a character of mine for a while, but I haven't REALLY used her for much since about 2015. Figured she deserved to be re-homed for this AU. If she looks familiar it's because yes I came up with her after watching Frozen.

F2: USE OF DELETED SCENES

The deleted scene where Anna and Elsa discover Iduna's secret room was adapted in "Forest of Shadows" and ended up being a very recurring element in the following books ("Dangerous Secrets" and "Pollar Nights").

And the moment where Elsa brings the memory of Iduna and Agnarr to Anna where her parents say they intend after the trip to Ahtohallan to tell Anna the whole truth is the last scene of “Polar Nights”.

A deleted moment that I would like to see adapted would be the “Woodsman”. The man who turns into a reindeer.

@bigfrozenfan​ did a really great job adapting the character concept for the fanfic that he posts here @bigfrozenfan-fanfics​.

But I didn't want it to be in a movie, but in a book. I love the concept of the franchise's mythology, but I understand that "Woodsman" wouldn't work in a movie, and I actually want "Frozen 3" to focus more on the magic vs. technology context than any other magical creature. But in a book it would match... although "Polar Nights" took advantage of something else from "Frozen 2" that this time was not discarded, the moment when Elsa answers Olaf's question and says that was the end, in the book Anna asks if this is the last time they will save Arendelle from a threat and Elsa also replies that it is the last time, but there is a comical tone to her answer. I don't like to believe that these dialogues are really something really decisive, Disney's way of saying that these great moments in the franchise are over, but these dialogues exist.

Kei Shigema wrote up a proposal for a Lunar 0, and other Lunar news

I've been systematically translating the Lunar interviews from Beep21, but there's news that I think can't wait.  In the second part of his Eternal Blue interview, series scriptwriter/visionary Kei Shigema talks about having drawn up a treatment for another Lunar—and it's not the story you might first think.

- Do you think you'll be able to be present the tale of the Four Heroes era (the so-called Lunar 0) touched upon in the PSP version of Silver Star in a game or other media?

Shigema: Lunar 0 has become a story of a bit different era!   As for the tale of the Four Heroes: the emotions and conflicts and fated bonds involved are released and resolved in Alex's story, so I don't think there's any need to depict it independently. However, I'd like to write a little bit about Laike's story after the end of the game.

- Be honest: is there even a 0.1% chance of Lunar 3 in the future?  I'm on pins and needles!

Shigema: I think the statute of limitations is up, so...  (Actually, about 21 lines of grown-up stuff was deleted here...)   ...So several years after the above was suspended, there were talks about whether we could now create a Lunar 0 about the details of how humanity moved to Lunar, and for consideration, we created a simple plot and characters.  Mr. Kubooka even drew up rough sketches of the main characters.   These were just for consideration; they didn't go to production. That means that, as for as the 0.1% chance goes: I don't think it's zero. However: an extraordinary amount of manpower and funding is necessary to create an RPG from scratch in this day and age, and when I think of getting to the point of getting that all together, I think it would be enormously difficult. I myself still want to hold out hope, so let's give Game Arts our support!

He also talks about his ideas on what may have happened after EB, which include a number of surprising concepts...

- What happened to Hiro and Lucia afterward?

Shigema: Welllll, I don't know—I suppose they went on a variety of adventures together? Lucia may have awakened the Blue Star, but I don't imagine it would have revived immediately just like that.  I wouldn't be surprised if an exhausted Hiro & Lucia had two or three more adventures on the level of Eternal Blue!  Making new comrades from people sleeping on the Blue Star—maybe everyone on Lunar coming to help, of course.  I also kind of doubt whether that would've really been the last we saw of Ghaleon-sama.   And perhaps at the end of Hiro and Lucia's adventures, the frozen earth would have changed to green...

Shigema also thinks that the spiritual successor to Lunar has already been made:

Incidentally, while it's not a sequel to Lunar, Tales of Destiny 2 (TOD2) is its spiritual successor—its emotional heir.

I'd wanted overseas Lunar fans to play it, too, but, alas, there was no overseas release! Abroad, Tales of Eternia was sold as "Tales of Destiny 2".

The role of TOD2's lengthy animated cutscenes; the expressions; the characters and story construction; the thematic material; the position of the heroine; the music production; and on and on—I think they're all connected fairly directly to Lunar.  The element of romance between the characters etc. too is that way.

Particularly thematically, Lunar is, as an action-adventure tale, thoroughly about how the hero fights to save the girl he loves and saves the world in the process. With TOD2, we tried to go further and depict the decisions and growth of a hero forced to choose between the girl and the world.

Shigema is credited as a “script producer” on Tales of Destiny 2.

So, to recap:

Kei Shigema spoke with an unspecified somebody (Game Arts seems likely, but it's not explicitly specified) about making another Lunar game, to the point where he drew up a rough plot and characters (for which series character designer Toshiyuki Kubooka drew up rough sketches).  Nothing’s gone to production, and he thinks funding would be a major obstacle.

This proposed Lunar game, "Lunar 0," would be about how humanity came to live on Lunar.

Shigema does not want to do the Four Heroes story as a standalone work.

Shigema thinks Hiro and Lucia might have had adventures after Eternal Blue in order to revive the Blue Star fully.

There are other people sleeping on the Blue Star, apparently.

Ghaleon might have shown up in some manner after his passing in Eternal Blue.

Shigema considers Tales of Destiny 2 (the Japanese title, not Eternia) to be the spiritual successor to Lunar.

first, i think i've mentioned the final girl au on my blog before but just to remind everyone it exists: the final girl au. this is for resident evil village where the premise is what if mother miranda yoinked ethan instead of mia and mia was the one who had to go after rose. did i create this solely so i could have ethan live and also write the house beneviento scenes as even more fucked up? yes. yes i did. i love mothers in horror. i haven't written it because it requires replotting of literally the Entire game and i'm so tired okay just SO tired but i have a lot of plot done (in my head) and i think there's so much symbolism and character development i could explore given the chance. mia winters my queen. get behind me i'll protect you from the fandom.

the shazam apple au: okay so there's this deleted/alternate scene from fury of the gods where instead of just throwing the apple to mary to get it away from kalypso, billy just takes? a fuckin bite out of it? actually several bites. he goes to TOWN on that thing it is the most unsettling thing i've ever witnessed. i thought it would be fun if wonder woman didn't deus ex machina things and billy stays dead longer than he does in the movie. he comes back, but it involves the apple (tree of life, and all that) um. growing. twirls hair. mild horror and such.

event horizon: um okay so you know the cave of memory in five kingdoms? (no you don't. i'm sure.) well tl;dr there's this place in necronum where if you go in, you leave behind an imprint of yourself that's basically you frozen in the moment you visited, with all your memories and personality, but unable to grow or retain new memories. stuck there forever. lol. and i in my jace/coleness was like hey, jace goes to visit the imprint because he can't deal with going to see real cole who is steadily forgetting the outskirts and all of them exist, and at least this version knows who he is, even if he can't remember anything new. so it's this fic that's almost like a timeloop: snapshots of every time jace visits him and imprint!cole obviously not remembering each one for the next round, and you see jace slowly get older and deal with the fact that he has to move on someday. except he's never been very good at letting go.

um i also had this idea that was like okay, what if ramarro sort of wins in the initial showdown in time jumpers and he puts cole in the void like he threatened, and then there's an underground rebellion trying to get him out so they can face ramarro and try to take him down again. this ends up involving jace taking the last artifact/potion, the one they didn't use, which sends someone forward a hundred years or whatever. i kind of didn't plot it much past that because 1) it was a frivolous jace/cole concept and 2) well

yeah.

finally i just think that someone should write a fic about warren and dale from fablehaven but i'm not unhinged enough. yet.

i have many many many such concepts i may never write. but i sure love talking about them.
