A bead of sweat rolled down your face as you groaned. Daryl supported you as you leaned forward, trying to alleviate the pain of the contraction—the unbearable, relentless pain.
Daryl could only hold you, comforting you as each contraction faded. He endured every bone-breaking squeeze from your hand to the feeling of your nails digging into him. In this moment, he was your lifeline, your support. The two of you wanted children. Alexandria brought safety the group hadn't felt in a long time. You and Daryl discussed it, going over the pros and cons and what to expect. You'd always wanted kids, even before the world went to shit. You just never found the right person until Daryl. But Lori's death changed your views. You had a pretty good friendship with Lori, and you loved Judith. But pregnancy could be unpredictable. Daryl was open about his fears. Even if the pregnancy was healthy, shit could still go sideways. Hershel's farm had been a paradise until the mess with Shane and Randall. The prison had been safe until the Governor showed up.
You and Daryl didn't want to lose each other.
"Just promise me," you'd said, gently brushing the hunter's hair from his face, "that if it comes down to it, you'll pick the baby." But you knew your hunter. You knew he'd try and save you both. "I know it's not fair," you'd added softly, "it shouldn't be you, but it could be. I just—"
Daryl shook his head; his hands found yours and held them. "It ain't gonna happen." He had leaned forward and rested his forehead against yours. The two of you sat like that for what felt like an eternity. You had every right to be frightened, to prepare for the worst. But it wasn't his decision.
He did promise, though—that night when you both slept. He looked at you, how peaceful you looked. Daryl knew you were considering your options. Lori still weighed heavily on you, and you wanted to be prepared.
So as he held you, comforting you through each contraction, he hoped you knew just how much he loved you.
As the labor progressed, Denise had you lie down. Tara was running around, grabbing fresh water and towels for her girlfriend. When it came for you to push, Daryl held your hand and brushed your sweat-soaked hair from your face. You screamed and whined, your body burning with each push, your body stretching to accommodate yours and Daryl's baby. You felt a warmth in your chest at the thought. You wanted to see them, to hold them. Would they look like Daryl or you? Maybe a combination of both!
Another contraction was building, and you knew you were close. On Denise's orders you pushed hard, until the tightness faded.
"I see its head," Denise exclaimed. "Just one more push!"
As the final contraction washed over you, you pushed with whatever strength you had left. A wave of relief came over you, and you couldn't help but sob. You could barely see through your tears, but you saw Denise and Tara get to work on cutting the cord and cleaning the baby. Daryl watched the two women like a hawk, hovering between staying with you and approaching them.
"Denise," you croaked. She came over, a small bundle wrapped in a soft towel. Daryl helped you sit up, as you gently took your baby.
"A boy," Denise smiled. He had Daryl's eyes, alert and expressive. His small mouth was puckered as a small noise escaped.
Tears ran freely down your face. You'd been so scared, and that fear will always linger now that he was here. But the relief of having your baby, knowing he was safe and healthy, made your worries seem far away. You looked up at Daryl; his eyes were watery. You smiled as you looked back at your baby. You carefully nudged Daryl. He opened his arms instinctively, holding the little bundle with the utmost care. Your heart nearly broke from the love you felt.
Daryl looked content, tears in his eyes as he held his son for the first time. They were your world. And you'd enjoy every last minute of it.

I often think about what we were robbed of between Denise and Daryl. I wish we got to see their friendship flourish. Their time was over before it even started.

- HELPING HAND ⋆☆ 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐱 𝐟𝐞𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫
Tumblr media
the quiet hum of people walking around outside brought you some sort of comfort as you began to settle in for the rest of your shift. since you had arrived in alexandria you had been in training by denise, learning how to help the sick and what medicines help what sicknesses. after loosing so many people you just wanted to help. you had been under denise’s watchful eye for a few weeks now, learning the basics at first before slowly moving on to the trickier types of treatments. sitting on an arm chair by an empty patient bed, you were reading through one of the many nursing books available. your train of thought was disrupted then the infirmary door swung open.
carl stood in the doorway, his eyebrows furrowing a little as he saw you. “sorry.” he mumbled. “i’ll come back.”
just as he tried to walk out the door you quickly stood up, putting the book down on a near by table. “it’s okay.” you smiled weakly. “what do you need?” you asked.
“it’s fine, i can wait for denise.” he shrugged, his hand beginning to reach for the door handle.
you let out a soft laugh, trying to dissolve the tense between the two of you. “she won’t be back for a couple’a hours.” you smiled softly. “d’yer need your eye cleaned?”
almost shamefully carl nodded his head. he slowly moved further into the infirmary, shutting the door behind him. carl stood in the doorway, almost like he was waiting for more instructions. you flicked your head in the direction of the patient bed before busying yourself on the near by surgical table. carl began to wander over to the bed.
“sit.” you spoke softly, beginning to unpack the alcohol wipes and other cleaning materials you might have needed.
carl sat down, taking his hat off and placing it beside him as he watched you get your arrangement of supplies. as you turned around, looking at carls dirtied bandage you furrowed your eyebrows a little.
you smiled weakly, knowing it must have been tough of carl. “d’yer mind?”
carl shyly agreed. you brushed his hair covering the bandage out of the way. you looked down at him and saw how ashamed he looked. you and carl hadn’t always gotten along but you grew up together. seeing him like this gave your a heavy feeling in your heart. you reached around to begin untying the bandage. slowly unwrapping the off-white dirtied bandage to reveal the scar left behind.
this was your first time seeing it. you stood there for a short moment, just looking. not in a disrespectful or disgusted way but you were just looking. you grabbed an alcohol wipe from the table behind you before turning back to carl. you gently began to dab around his eye socket, cleaning the edge of the wound first.
“i think it looks cool by the way.” you spoke quietly causing carl to scoff. “i’m serious!” you smiled, throwing the dirtied wipe into a small bin on the floor. you could see a weak smile beginning to tug at the edges of his lips. “ya know, i heard someone say that chicks dig scars.” you grinned. spinning around on the balls of your feet to grab another alcohol wipe.
“there’s only one girl i actually care about.” he laughed to himself, looking down at his feet.
as you spun back around you noticed carl playing with the tips of his fingers, picking at his cuticles. you gently placed your pointer finger under his chin and pushed his head up. choosing to pretend you didn’t hear carls comment you began to clean the rest of his healing wound, his other eye carefully watching you.
dabbing the wipe a few more times before tossing it in the trash, you let go of his chin. “all done.” you smiled softly. “want me to wrap it back up?” you asked shyly.
carl nodded weakly, his hands shakily reach up to create a part in his hair. you reached back and grabbed a small square of cloth bandage and turned back to carl. while carl had his left hand on top of his head holding up the parted hair waiting for any further instructions. you thought for a moment, knowing this would be difficult with two hands. so, gently you bent down a little at the knees and grabbed carls spare hand causing him to tense a little at your touch.
“sorry.” you mumbled. “hold this here.” you spoke quietly, resting the bandage against his eye-socket before placing his hand over it. as you finished wrapping up the bandage and secured it in place before dropping your hands back to your side. “all done.”
“thank you.” carl whispered, letting go of his hair letting it fall down over his freshly wrapped bandage. carl stood up, swiftly grabbing his hat before beginning to walk towards the door. “hey uhm.” he mumbled, spinning back around to face you. “d’yer wanna hang out later?”
you looked down at your hands. you could feel your heart beat getting a little faster and you cheeks getting hotter. admittedly a little flustered you began to nod your head.
“mmyeah.” you smiled, still playing with your nails. “i just gotta finish up ‘ere.”
he took a few more steps back towards you before plopping down onto an arm chair by the window.
“it’s okay.” he shrugged. “i’ll wait.”

Fighting the Fall
Tumblr media
NOW COMPLETE: Chapters 110/110
Main pairing: Daryl/Jesus Significant background pairings: Aaron/Eric, Tara/Denise, Maggie/Glenn Words: 400,297 A rewrite of the second half of season 6, and seasons 7 and 8 with all the violence of canon, a little less main character death, and a touch more romance. A very slow burn with a focus on establishing and developing the inter-character relationships.
“I ain’t chasing after you again!” Daryl called from the porch, barely visible now in the fading light. “Almost doesn’t seem worth it then,” Jesus called back, cheerfully, and performed a little twirl in the mud. “You catch cold and you can get yourself back to Hilltop!” Daryl yelled after him, and Jesus responded by raising his middle finger in the air, illuminated with the beam of his flashlight, not bothering to slow down or look back.

A Way Out (Part 2.5)
Tumblr media
summary: owen gets treated, the group fights the walkers outside and denise is left in the infirmary with lives on her hands (owen is unconscious so this is mostly a denise chapter, next chapters are gonna be more owen i promise)
warning(s): death (canon ones), the usual violence and gore of the world of the walking dead, swearing, this work wasn't properly reviewed and english isn't my first language so there may be spelling mistakes
Disclaimer: I don't actually know how amputations (or most medical procedures) work so i'm sorry if that part looks a little rushed and inaccurate.
This work on AO3: will be uploaded soon
.
As Owen laid down on the gurney, Denise adjusted the tourniquet, making it even tighter to prevent more blood loss “Okay… here we go.”
It was gonna be a long night for everyone…
Owen seemed ready for it but the four Alexandrians in the room looked at each other, the tension was palpable. After all, none of them have had to amputate someone before. However, Denise was ready to take on the challenge as she felt more ready and confident than she had felt in a long time “Spencer, I’m gonna need you to hit right between the elbow and the bite, half the upper arm can still be saved” “Okay, I can do this...”
One
Two
Three
It only took three hits from the machete to completely sever the infected limb from the rest of the body which was a lot better than what Denise had expected.
Owen’s muffled painful screams could be heard through the cloth in his mouth but Heath and Aaron managed to hold him still enough and by the time he passed out from exhaustion, Denise was prepared to deal with the aftermath.
“He’s out, I can try seal off the blood vessels but we need to focus on stopping the bleeding as quickly as possible, Heath could you help with the towels? I still need to treat the other wound.” Heath helps with the extensive bleeding from Owen’s left arm while Denise starts working on cleaning and stitching the ugly gash in his body.
Meanwhile, Spencer disposes of the bloody machete and Aaron tries to make himself useful by taking a small metal tank to fill with clean tap water but faint noises outside, uncharacteristic to the usual walker sounds, stop him on the way to the upstairs bathroom.
“He lost a lot of blood, even with IV therapy he’s gonna need to rest for a few days, but I’m sure he’ll pull through” Denise informs the rest of the crew as she finally closes the cut, feeling like she can take a breath and relax for a bit.
“Oh my god… Hey you need to see this” Heath rushes to the window where Aaron was followed by Denise, spotting Michonne breaking through the hoard of walkers with her sword and Rick… with Carl in his arms...
“That’s the kid... Is he bit?” Denise looked away, filtering every question and reply from the men around her turning it into white noise as she felt herself starting to panic a little. After looking back at Owen passed out, laid on the gurney in the corner of the infirmary, she came to the conclusion that she could definitely do this.
She’s done it before, she’ll do it again.
“Okay let’s get the other gurney out and some more supplies, we’ll definitely need more towels.” as she ordered around some more instructions she rushed to let Michonne and Rick in and treat Carl's gunshot wound.
A small part of her hoped, in the midst of all that confusion, that they wouldn’t look around too much, so they wouldn't find out that one of the patients in the infirmary was the former Wolf leader.
As she predicted, Rick’s tunnel vision kept him from paying attention to anyone but his son, as he left the infirmary soon after. Michonne was also too busy to notice, clearly just as worried about Carl and now Rick who went outside to get rid of the herd himself.
Not long after the fact most of the group was out there helping Rick, killing as many walkers as they could, soon cleaning the entire community.
The people fought for Alexandria, even the terrified members of the community who had never seen such a massive herd of walkers, picked up a weapon and tried to help the rest of the group dispose of them.
Unlike the rest of the group, Denise stayed behind in the infirmary for hours like a hawk watching every movement of her recent patients and taking care of the ones upstairs.
She was aware the chances of either of them waking up so early was close to zero but she didn’t wanna take any chances of not being there if one of them went into shock. She fought hard for their lives and wasn’t about to gamble them, better safe than sorry.
The blonde was now mostly concerned about everyone else’s reaction to Owen being there, part of her didn’t want to leave the room in case anyone else walked in and saw the ‘W’ on Owen’s forehead.
Besides Aaron, Heath and Spencer no one even knew about him, she hoped Morgan would show up soon.
Denise noticed a burning light coming from the outside, a huge fire on the lake, no doubt part of the efforts of the Alexandrians to kill the walkers that were left. The blazing flames attracting them to go straight into their demise.
Walker sounds gradually got quieter and a few moments later someone burst into the infirmary, searching for something or someone.
The medic sighed in relief and Morgan mimicked the action, clearly glad to see she was unharmed. “I had to know if you were okay"
"Yep, I'm great, never better" Denise replied light-heartedly with an undertone of anxiety and sarcasm considering they barely managed to get out of the situation.
"...I was the one holding him captive if anything happened-”
“and something did happen, something… great, actually.” Denise smiled knowingly at Morgan, indirectly letting him know he was right about Owen.
People could change, sometimes all you need is that key moment, that critical decision can change the course of the rest of your life, and Owen made the right one.
“Honestly I had some doubts y’know not gonna lie to you” Denise confessed awkwardly. Morgan nodded, understanding where she's coming from, and asked if anyone else got hurt.
"I put Carl in a separate room... he got shot and lost his right eye." Morgan's expression quickly shifted as soon as he heard the boys name.
“What happened out there…?”
“Well, I wasn’t told any details i was more concerned with saving his life. I know Jessie and her kids are gone too. Probably a few more people passed as well” Morgan nodded once more.
Denise noticed since the time he met him, that he was a very hopeful and kind man, clearly somber about the ammount of lives lost that night. He was also a man of few words, never felt to need to make small talk or speak up if there was nothing to say.
There was something very real and honest about people like that, and she appreciated it.
“I… I don’t want to touch on the subject but I’m gonna have to ‘cuz we’re clearly in a delicate situation here” Denise briefly diverted her gaze to Owen's spot in the corner of the infirmary and Morgan knew what she was talking about.
He wasn’t stupid, he knew Rick and the rest of the team were gonna need some convincing to let Owen stay and heal or, at the very least, to not kill him in his sleep.
He felt like right now it was too risky to go to them and confront them about it, considering how recent the attack was and how so many casualties resulted from the previous Wolves attack and the walkers overrunning Alexandria.
They needed to think of what to do but there weren’t many options “Carol, Tara, Eugene and Rosita already know about him being here so hiding him will do nothing.” Morgan shook his head, he wasn’t even considering lying to Rick and his family about it
“There’s no point in lying anymore, he’s changed, we just need to show them that.”
“Carol already saw it. After he got bit trying to save me, I told him I’d save his life if he took me to the infirmary. He saved my life again on the way there and Carol saw it, she helped us too. I saw her face, she knows you were right about him.”
Morgan knows Carol better than most people, he recognizes that even if she saw him do a good deed and saving an innocent woman’s life, that it’s not enough for her to advocate for him. He just hopes she makes the right decisions when the conversation about his stay inevitably happens
“We need to talk to Rick and the others when they come back here, when the sun rises again. Things always look clearer in the morning. But for now, rest... it’s been a long night.”
------------------
The aftermath was a relief, it felt like the panic instilled in Alexandria had been there for so long and it was finally over. The sun was rising, it was peaceful, even with the hundreds of dead bodies cluttering the streets, rotting infected blood washing the walls of houses, the fields of grass and the tar on the roads.
Everyone was tired. To some this was a life changing event, to others just another tuesday night, and a couple were definitely thinking about how difficult the cleanup was gonna be, but most are just glad that it’s finally over.
Something changed that night, everyone in Alexandria, they were survivors now, fighting for their lives, for their home.
