It's a little bit fucked up that Bhaal had Durge kill every connection they made with their own hands - foster family, and paladin Drge (and presumably other classes with their own equivalents to) slaughtering their paladin order, and whatever those repeat incidents where they broke their oath was - and forced them to become his vessel.

And then, on the non-Chosen path, Durge is torn away from their family and forced to kill everybody they knew and possibly cared about with their own hands.

Sure, objectively the latter is different: the first case was them being moulded into the puppet of a god, and the second leaves them with a blank slate and the ability to be a better person and determine their own path in life. We think. Yes, I'm glaring at you, Withers.

But does it feel that way for them?

And there's as much blood on their hands as that on the corpses they've left on the ground. Orin and Gortash's crimes were also their crimes. Orin is no different to Durge, she had no choice in her life, she just never got the chance to ever be different. Durge shouldn't be different, Jergal just decided to step in and "make it all better" - and where was this divine intervention decades ago, before a "little Urge" hadn't yet torn apart a family in their own home, or before they came anywhere close to inflicting the Absolute on the world? Why does it come when it's too fucking late.

The main plot was their plan! They are the main villain of this story, they just wandered onto the wrong side of the conflict! By accident! In this little narrative of heroes and villains, bar a single accident, Durge would be left rotting on the floor next to their little sister and the tyrant they admired. It's not like this is necessarily a redemption arc either! Durge can still be an absolute monster! Also how the fuck do you even start to atone for all the horrors they committed? Does saving x amount of people really do anything to alleviate the harm they've already done? How much culpability do you assign to somebody who only has the pretence of autonomy?

There are other ways to interpret Durge and how they experience their redemption/"redemption" arc, of course, but if I were them I'd want to nap for a week after the final battle. Or a month. Maybe a few years...

i keep seeing posts comparing the gay moral panic of the past to the current trans moral panic and I do get where they're coming from but like. as somebody who still lives with fundamentalist evangelical Christians, there is no real differentiation. like at all. fundamentalist Christians still hate gay people just as much as they did, they just now know the terminology to hate trans people in the exact same way. they didn't shift targets, they added more. they are not fine with gay people now that they hate trans people. is it more palatable for more people to hate trans people? yes, because society has gotten better faster about gay people than trans people, and that's why they're being so loud about trans people right now, because more people outside of their in-group find it acceptable. but the ones starting the "protect the children" bullshit and calling trans people groomers are saying the exact same things about gay people, and they have been the whole time, and they have never stopped. they always hated trans people, but now they know the words to make that clear. do not let them convince you they only hate trans people. they hate you, too. they want you gone, too. don't let them separate us.

I’m still thinking about the Book of Life because it’s such an obvious Chekhov’s gun. I don’t recall it ever being mentioned in S1, but in S2 it is highlighted twice as a very real, serious threat, and then it’s never brought up again. It can’t just hang indefinitely in the air like that, so I expect it will be used at some point in S3.

But in a way, this threat is kind of hollow when used towards Crowley, because Heaven can’t erase him from history, and they know they can’t. The Fall of Man is such a crucial point in the Great/Ineffable Plan that I doubt they would be willing to mess with that, as much as they hate him. He’s the literal Serpent of Eden! How can the Plan proceed if there’s no one to tempt Eve? The existence of The Serpent is such a core part of the Fall of Man (both in the GO universe and in biblical lore in general) that I think it would be simply too big a risk to take.

From our point of view, Aziraphale is also crucial for the history of humanity until this point. It’s not explicitly stated, but think about it for a moment: would Adam and Eve have survived, had Aziraphale not given them his sword? There’s beasts out there, and it’s cold, and she’s expecting already. We literally see Adam fight a lion with the sword mere moments after being exiled from Eden; I don’t think their odds would have been all that good without it. It’s at least likely that Humanity has managed to survive the Fall and thrive because of Aziraphale’s actions.

Here’s the thing, though: we know this, but Heaven doesn’t, because Aziraphale has been lying to them (and to God!!!) about this ever since the Beginning. What has he done of worth in the eyes of Heaven? Sure, he was guarding the Eastern Gate, he’s been on Earth thwarting demons and all that jazz, but as far as they know, he’s never had a pivotal role in the Plan (except for. You know. Stopping Armageddon. But they didn’t want him to have that role, and they still resent him for it). There’s no reason for them to hesitate, should they be threatened by his existence, because to them he’s not necessary to carry out the will of God (as opposed to Crowley).

So yeah. I think the Book of Life will make another appearance in S3. And, if it does, I think Aziraphale is the most likely candidate as its victim.

Another thing that doesn't make sense: if Mike's reason to struggle with saying ily is because he's scared of El not needing him anymore, wtf did he not say anything when she was BEGGING him to say it, crying. His actions don't make any sense. When she was fighting Vecna, why did he only say it after Will told him to say something. All he said are lies, shit he came up with on the moment. He cares for her, he loves her platonically, but FUCK, that's not romantic love. Their relationship is build on lies, manipulation, arguments, spying and pressure from others. If they're so good for one each other, why are they always arguing, why are their best interactions platonic, why do they always have to be apart for the narrative to progress, why does Mike has more romantic chemistry with Will. Duffers, if your plan is to make Milkvan endgame, making a queer character feelings for his best friend as the instigator to the cishet romance is NOT it. El didn't commission the painting, those are Will's feelings, El doesn't NEED romantic love, especially from Mike, to grow. Otherwise, WHY DO YOU ALWAYS SEPARATE THEM FOR HER TO GROW. Why whenever they're together they're just garbage shells of themselves. This is NOT a healthy relationship. Why have Mike have such a meaningful relationship with Will, which is shown to impact both their lives, to throw it all away for the sake of a cishet romance. Is just INFURIATING. Your donations to AO3 go into OTW's financial reserve, and an estimate of how much they have is around $2.5 million (thread that breaks this down). They can maintain the platform for five years with what they have stored, and that number may be a low estimate.

OTW doesn't need your money. OTW's volunteers deserve financial compensation for all they've been subjected to, but none will see a penny from your donations.

Support the volunteers all you like, but know that your donations do nothing for them nor improve their working conditions.
