On October 4th, 2023, Mario Kart Tour received its final content update. After this day, no more new tours would come to the game, with it instead cycling through past tours. I didn't respect the game all that much, but I do think it's a bit sad we won't get to see any new racers or alternate outfits for a while now...

Or will we?

We've received intel from an anonymous source that this spring, something BIG is coming to Mario Kart Tour. A brand new tour, with new content, to commemorate the season! I'll let the leaked description speak for itself...

Race through the sacred streets of the pontiff's home turf in the new Vatican Velodrome track, and save up your Rubies to nab Kamek (Pope) in the Spotlight Shop- along with a whole host of communion-tastic goodies! We even got an early look at Kamek's new Pope alt! A miter really suits him, don't you think? Our sources tell us that his unique trick animations include performing the sign of the cross, and sprinkling holy water around him! Even in the heat of a race, Kamek (Pope) loves his neighbor and blesses his fellow competitors!

Kamek (Pope)'s signature kart is the Turbo Tabernacle! What, did you expect a Popemobile? Don't you know the Vatican doesn't like that nickname? I can't believe you would expect such blasphemy here. Our leaker was kind enough to provide this mockup, showing its wafer wheels as well as the new glider, the INRI Scroll! With this glider, you can feel like YOU'RE the one being crucified!

We hope you're as excited as we are for the upcoming Vatican Tour! It would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it would be to resist playing Mario Kart Tour this Easter season!

here's a MOCKUP of the jankies battle screen that i made a while back (and touched up today)!

several things to note:

the numbers don't really make any sense (they're just placeholders)

you use the same pool of points for all of a janky's moves (so less like pokémon PP and more like earthbound PP); also a move's power and required points are identical

no items in battle! none whatsoever (sole exception being the cards used to catch jankies. yes it's done using cards. yes like in super paper mario.)

if one of your jankies needs healing, you can use type effectiveness to your advantage! certain type interactions will heal the target rather than damage them (e.g. hitting a bone type with a cheese-type move), which means you can attack your own team with the right moves in order to heal up.

in-game type chart (trust me this can work in 1-bit)

the SWAP option lets two jankies swap places with one another. this also means that if you expect to be hit with a certain move that might heal a different janky on your team, you can make them trade places to have the enemy heal you by accident instead!

not pictured, but one of the status effects you can inflict is turning a janky around, making them face away from the other team (yes like in mother 3). this makes them waste one turn, where instead of attacking they'll turn to face the enemy team again (can happen during the same turn if they're slower than you). if you hit them while they're facing away from you, it's a crit

another status condition is "needs to sneeze"! with every turn, there's a chance that your move fails because your janky "needs to sneeze but can't"—until they finally DO end up sneezing, potentially passing the status effect to the other team.

by the way the whole reason why this is in black and white is because it all started out as an idea to make for the 1-bit Playdate handheld! the SDK is free and you don't even need the real device to play games made for the system OR even to develop for it! the people behind it encourage people to make games for it which is extremely cool and my god is it so much easier to set up than homebrew dev tools for nintendo systems

This is perhaps a little niche and long winded but i'm still posting about it!!

Friday was the last day of my first ~year at design school! Final pitches! It's been a whirlwind!!! 🥹🎨

It's cool also because I can finally post about the interdisciplinary motion/interactive/graphic design project I've been working on for the entire last term!!

The project brief was to design a solution to a problem to do with waste that would 'make a difference' - I pitched a solution for the waste of energy and time that comes with needle phobia for kids + parents, understanding that quite well because of formerly being incredibly needle-phobic myself, particularly badly as a child.

Without further ado, this is Prickle!

He's a friendly little syringe shaped character who lives inside a (3D modeled) device made for kids (~6+) that works a little like a Tamagotchi, but with built in distraction techniques that help with coping with distress and anxiety (e.g. DBT mindfulndss). It rewards kids for getting shots and playing games / using anxiety reduction tools, and they can spend coins earned doing this in the item or wallpaper shops to customize the home screen.

I created a 20 page brand guideline document, a bunch of promo poster mockups and packaging mockups, coded a fake ''Kickstarter" website, animated an explainer video with camera character rigging and animated logo, as well as hi-fi prototyped a UI for the prospective device. The pictures here are a small part of what I made, but it's so rewarding to see even part of it all together!!! I did that!!! Cool!!! I love my syringe son!!! 💗💉

So one of my most-used Eurorack modules is a device I designed myself and fit into a 2HP panel: my attenuverting mixer. It's the little guy depicted below in both its current state and a (poor) mockup of an enhancement I'm considering making.

An attenuverter, for anyone wondering, is an attenuator that also inverts. Like a volume control, if you put a signal through while the knob is fully clockwise, all of it gets through. As you turn counterclockwise, less and less gets through until the midpoint, where nothing gets through. Then, as you keep going counterclockwise, it starts to increase again, but now it's inverted — if you displayed the signal on an oscilloscope, the highs would now be low and vice versa — with the full counterclockwise position yielding full again, but upside down, scopewise.

When nothing is plugged into the input jack, it's normalled to +5V, which means that the knob can select any voltage between -5V and +5V. This is useful directly as the control for any other CV input, but it's more broadly useful in a mixing context: the outputs of the two attenuverters and the signal at the unity input are added together and output at the Mix Output. In addition to audio mixing, control voltages sum this way. For example, the MIDI to CV adapter I have outputs the signal from the connected keyboard's pitch bend as a voltage between 0V and 10V. When connected to an oscillator, that's always increasing the frequency no matter where the rocker is, and by up to 10 octaves, which is way too much. But by patching it into one attenuverter and setting it to a swing of 0V to 2V, and setting the other to -1V, you can calibrate it to a nice, constrained octave up and down.

But the point I was making here is that because it's a skinny little module with flattened knobs (really just the pot shafts), it's difficult to tell at a glance where they're set. So I'm considering modding those by marking them as seen in the second image — painting red the flat side (the one that's upward when the pot is in its center position and the attenuation is all the way down), and etching and painting a red line across the face. (I should probably also clean up the panel area around the Unity Input jack.)

HEY. YOU. I NEED UR HELP PLEASE (not a serious matter but I would really appreciate the input)

So, basically, I am in quite the dilemma. I'm planning on making a self-insert type character for the Disney Kingdoms: Figment comics which is a process in of itself as I'm not as familiar on the source material as I am on something like Alton Towers.

However, the real problem comes from the fact that I have two characters I'd like to make my S/I, and I seriously can't choose which one to use, so...

I like to think that Rose makes fake infomercials for all of her products, and has roped all of her family, friends, and neighbors into making them. which means, eventually, The Doctor gets tapped to star in one, where he gamely holds up toys and talks about their fantastic qualities. now he's pretty charismatic, and he loves teddy bears and all, so I think he'd get very enthusiastic about this, and become very popular all over the internet.

so we know he always calls himself The Doctor, even in contexts where it doesn't make sense, but in a channel of fake toy infomercials (with real handmade toys to buy) I don't think people would question it too much. they even get him to say "trust me, I'm The Doctor" and other catchphrases like that by leaving comments. he develops a cult following, and, owing to this, Rose puts him in even more videos and gets him to talk up all of her most popular products. she's doing great business out of all this.

one time, he tries to show off a talking bear. the bear says something normal, like "I love you", but it's advertised with the ability to email Rose your own audio files and she'll record them for the bear. except this one doesn't turn on immediately - so The Doctor has to sonic it better. works pretty quickly, the bear starts playing music, and he goes, see, what a fascinating product! which, of course, makes the bear very popular after the video goes viral. what else does it do? well it makes people want his sonic screwdriver.

now I don't think almost anyone thinks it's an actual device, they think he was just being funny, but it means that Rose gets to design a whole bunch of novelty penlights and they start selling really well, too. (just cheap bulk ones and she sculpts decorations onto them, well within her wheelhouse.) and The Doctor, by popular demand, starts using them to give the plushies 'checkups' and make sure they're all feeling their best.

so, because he does silly little skits like that, and he's called The Doctor, people think he's a toy doctor, and start sending in their dolls and bears and toy cars and everything to get patched up. Rose can do that easily; that's the same sewing, stuffing, painting, etc. that she's already been doing when she makes things by hand. maybe she learns some new techniques, which I think she'd be excited to try, but most things I think would be very quick repairs and send all the toys home happy and healthy. except it's odd that it's happening so much, because no one has put together that people think The Doctor is, like, The Toy Doctor yet.

but The Doctor has also noticed this influx of orders and is all, well, if people are going to be sending so many in anyway we might as well add a separate order form, and while we're at it let's make our own site, that'll be cheaper and more convenient. and Rose is all do you even know anyone who can make a website because all my friends are, no offense, kind of bad at it, and you shouldn't believe them when they say they know how. and The Doctor's like of course I know someone, it's Mickey.

and Mickey's like, oh sure, I'll do you a favor, and drops by the house to help set up Rose's website because he wants to install some design software for her to make it easier to do mockups and such, and he gets to explaining, and then The Doctor finally comes home, and at first Mickey's like, hey, and keeps explaining, but then he finally looks at The Doctor and he's like. why do you have a different face that's the same face that I thought you already didn't have anymore, and The Doctor has to explain.

and then Mickey's like. I thought you lived with Martha now and also what happened to the version of you who looks like me, did you just abandon Martha? and The Doctor's like. I don't think that part has happened for me yet it's probably yet another version of The Doctor who isn't really The Doctor but just looks exactly the same because that's happened really a lot of times now. or else it's a future version of me! and Mickey is like. right well enjoy your website

and then Rose asks Mickey to do infomercials for her toys and since Mickey thinks the toy monsters are really cool he's very enthusiastic about them and then his videos go viral too

also Mickey is the only one who realized why people think he's The Toy Doctor and has to explain about toy hospitals
