I was actually looking at the dance this form is based off of, from the attire the dancers were wearing to movement, and it was fascinating. I’ll draw more of this ENA in the future because of it.
From January 1 to January 6, a party is celebrated in my country, right in the town called "Pillaro", where all kinds of demons, souls and spirits meet to have a party of many colors and joy.
The "Diablada de Pillaro" It originates in times of slavery to the indigenous people of my land. where the indigenous people dressed up as demons to represent the Spanish slave owners. That is to say, a vision of the indigenous people to the foreign race of the time, but over time this festival has transformed into a fun and family heritage.✨❤️
An article by Ricardo Amores: “a tradition of more than 100 years that represents the indigenous and mestizo protest against the exploitation and oppression by the Catholic Church during the colonial era in Ecuador. A party full of music, dance, characters, legends that are part of a resistance and at the same time of a cultural identity. It starts from January 1 to 6, in a place full of liquor, gastronomy, music, dances and, above all, impressive devilish characters. Anyone can participate, dressing as Devil, Guaricha (man dressed as a woman), Capariche (sweeper) or line dancers and celebrate to the sound of of traditional music. It is said that if you participate as a character within the party, you are destined to continue participating for 7 consecutive years, otherwise the devil himself will come for you.”
La Diablada returned to Píllaro after two years of suspension due to the pandemic. At least 7,000 devils, capariches, line dancers and other characters danced in the 15 groups.
Candelaria Festival, Puno, Peru: The Candelaria Festival in Perú is a surprising fusion of colonial religious tradition with deep-rooted customs and its veneration of the Virgin. For her, Puno is considered the folkloric capital of America and is the Diablada, one of the most colorful and representative dances of this festival, where more than 40,000 dancers and 200 musical bands express all their devotion to the fullest through their wonderful costumes and an energy that makes them dance for two full weeks.
Demon and Diablada ENA, I'm messing around with sketches of them to understand them better.
They are like hiccups for the drunk form, but I want to pull something more from them. Both represent demons so I might start exaggerating those features more heavily in the future
