Bruce Wayne’s Headache Classification System Chapter 3

A/N: The author shows up a month and a half late, with Starbucks: S'up, here's 7500 words of pure chaos. Feast! Y'all are the best, thank you for the amazing comments in the last chapter. I love seeing your excitement for this crazy little world I've created. I have a new fic that I'll be adding eventually, called: "The Stalking of Daminette: A Treatise by Steph and Cass" it's still in its baby stage, so we'll see how long that grows before I post. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it because I have not started on the next part and I'm moving in less than a month, so maybe the next chapter will be out sometime in October, but I'm not making any promises. Enjoy!
Chapter 3
Bruce narrows his eyes and pins his children with an unimpressed stare. “What did you do?
“He was totally willing!” Dick insists with an innocent grin.
“Coercion.”
“Manhandling.”
Dick’s grin disappears evilly side-eyeing his brothers. “Both of you suck at being back up.”
“He didn’t want to at first,” confesses Tim. “But they held my computer hostage to convince me to agree.” Tim rubs a hand over the top of his laptop in a soothing manner. “So, I stole all his knives so he couldn’t stab us, while Jason and Dick wrangled him into the car.”
“Little demon was spittin’ nails, but we persuaded him not to throw himself out the car, so he was trapped.”
“By the time we arrived, I convinced them how a game of hide-and-seek would be a fun, non-disastrous way to spend time together,” says Dick, his face one of ruined hopes and dreams.
“Mostly through bribes, blackmail, and calls to our innate competitiveness,” says Tim.
“Dickie kept the keys so none of us could leave, and declared himself seeker first,” Jason continues. “He found me-"
"In the food court," says Dick.
"Then Replacement-"
"At the Starbucks."
"Didn't even get to have that coffee," grumbles Tim.
"So we joined forces and decided to search for Damian together. We spent an hour chasing him in circles. Swear I almost caught him too.”
Tim scoffs, “Yeah no, he had us good. We had no clue where he was.”
Jason rolls his eyes. “Oh, shut up Tim.”
“You shut up,” Tim shoots back.
“Boys…” warns Bruce, already regretting bringing all three of them into this sitrep.
“Okay, so he evades us long enough to team up with a girl named Marinette Dupain-Cheng-” starts Tim.
Jason growls a bit. “Lying bitch.”
“Jason…” Dick sighs but doesn’t refute the insult. This only serves to deepen Bruce’s headache which now strongly veers out of the I-am-not-mentally-or-emotionally-prepared-for-this category and straight into Ongoing-dumpster-fire territory.
This was fine.
Jason slams a fist on the table. “She lied to my face multiple times! She said she was hired to poison Tim and Damian in order to steal Tim’s phone and if I didn’t find them in time, they were gonna die from brain damage!”
Bruce blinks. Did he hear that right? “Sorry, what?”
Tim sighs. “Okay, rewind, so Damian evading us like the little assassin he trained to be, hooks up with Marinette, who, as far as my research shows, is a civilian-”
“Yeah right, girlie ain’t a civilian. No way, not in a million years.”
“Shut up Jason, let Tim talk,” snaps Dick.
“She lied to Jason about where Damian was, and between her initial meeting with Jason and the incident in the food court, about an hour passed. Then she appeared in the cafeteria with Damian’s card, how we tracked her there in the first place. She panicked when she saw us and used her magic on the shelves in the warehouse to cause a diversion-”
“She crushed a fucking forklift, and we got blamed and billed for it.”
‘How?’ Bruce thinks in despair. Not over the money, of course. They had more than enough to cover costs, just in the general sense of incredulity. One would think, after being Batman this long, it would inoculate Bruce from bewilderment at all types of situations.
It has not.
Tim shakes his head. “No, I proved we had nothing to do with that."
‘Oh well isn’t that grand?’
"Didn’t manage to pin anything on her either considering how much electrical interference occurred whenever she performed magic, but we don’t have to pay.”
“Magic doesn’t cause electrical interference,” Bruce reminds them. “Not unless it completely breaks the system in the process.” All three boys – men really, his kids all grown up now, even if they pulled stupid shit like this – turn to him. Identical expressions of contemplation played over their faces.
“Shit, you’re right,” mutters Dick.
“Well, her magic does,” counters Tim, his brow creasing heavily, grasping past the sleepy, foggy haze that comes with being awake for three days straight. Grabbing a notepad he jots down the observation. “Her magic doesn’t obey any rules we know to be true.”
“It’s magic, dumbass,” Jason sneers. “It doesn’t have to make sense. I’m still on the fence about whether she enchanted Damian though. On one hand, demon-spawn shouldn’t be capable of smiling that much, and he defended her, deferred to her, fucking used her first name without blinking an eye. That ain’t natural for him. On the other hand, she’s the same brand of demented as he is, and maybe they want to be horrible little demons together.”
“I…” starts Dick before trailing off, his face flickers through a series of emotions. Mostly fragile hope, pragmatic disbelief, and good heaping of uncertainty.
“See, Golden Boy, even you can’t say this is a good thing!”
“He made a friend?” Dick offers with a pained wince.
“She’s a psychopath!”
Bruce cuts off the argument. As much as he would love to hear more in-depth detail about Damian’s newest… acquaintance, he wants a clearer picture of what happened at the store before he judges the situation. “Boys, behave. Tim, please continue.”
Tim nods. “Okay, so Marinette escapes the warehouse, and we track her back to their entry point into the vent system. We split up to cover more ground, I take the warehouse and keep myself from the worker’s sight but close enough to the vent I could spot them exiting. About forty-five minutes later they set me on fire-”
“Wait,” interrupts Bruce. “Fire? FIRE?”
Tim looks at him like he’s being particularly slow. “Uh, yeah, I said that a time or two now, keep up. To be fair, the fire was more around me. But I did end up singed.” He shows his arm sleeve again, and the singeing on the sleeve takes on a whole new meaning.
“I wasn’t sure what happened at the time, I expected to catch the little twerps, not engage in guerilla warfare. So, understandably, I’m off my game. The security guard dragged me into the office, and I’m ready to call for backup, only to find my phone missing. I talk down the manager in the warehouse, but then he yells at these poor workers. And Bruce, they were kids, couldn’t be more than fifteen, working in this busy warehouse with no clue about any rights they had, and then after the manager became… distracted I conversed with the other workers, and-”
Tim’s one-breath ramble was swiftly cut off by Jason. “Yeah, yeah you caused a worker’s strike through the power of charisma and rhetoric. So original. No one else in the world’s history has ever done that. Can we get back to the French bitch tricking me?”
Tim huffs, crossing his arms. “You can continue then because I wasn’t part of that.”
“Cool, I will. So, there I wait at my post, and it’s been like an hour and a half at this point. Timmy finally calls, but it’s not actually him it’s the French girl. She’s actin’ like a paid assassin slash company spy, and says she poisoned Tim and Damian through tricking them into eatin’ poisoned coffee and shit.”
“And you believed that?” Bruce asks. Jason glares at him with piercing green-blue eyes, and although his second son puts off an air of anger and annoyance, it’s a mask for a deep-seated fear that his brothers were genuinely in danger. That he would be too slow, too late to save them, like what happened to-
Jason flippantly shrugs his shoulders, years of practiced reticence covering his care. “With our craptastic luck, I sure as hell wasn’t going to take any chances. So, I go chasin’ and-”
“~It’s a trap~,” Tim gloats in a sing-songy voice, his grin wide and eyes unfocused. He’s going to crash soon, it’s just a matter of time.
“Shut up, you ended up set on fire and pickpocketed. You have no leg to stand on.” Tim rolls his eyes but slouches back in his chair. “So, it’s a trap, and demon-spawn is waitin’ there with one of those tricked-out trip wires Timmy made. He and Frenchie wrapped me up good, taunted me, and stripped me taking my wallet and phone. Bitch also took my knife. I insult the brat, and he fires back, but before he does anything else Marinette pulls him back and tells him to simmer down and he does.” Jason’s wide eyes drip with incredulity and, quite frankly, a little awe.
“I see,” Bruce says, a fake calm surrounding his words. He really didn’t. They were talking about Damian. Bruce loves his only biological son, he truly does. He loves Damian’s sketches, and care for animals, he loves his dedication to sword mastery and sly humor. The way his son has the same wrinkle crease between his eyes Bruce gets, and that Thomas did before them. The similarity soothes a small part of Bruce’s aching soul. He’s ridiculously proud of all the work and effort Damian went through, put himself through, to become a better person. To overcome the trauma his upbringing caused and come out stronger.
That being said, Damian was still arrogant, stubborn, and quick-tempered. He considered his opinions and plans more highly than others, and unless one could give a quick and compelling explanation as to an alternative option, he would be proceeding with his plan with efficiency; damn anything else standing in his way. Damian spared no sympathy to the average person and even less for fools.
This behavior was extremely out of character for him.
Which made the entire situation ring with alarm.
Jason shook his head. “I don’t think you do,” he says, calling Bruce’s lie out. “You’re gonna need to see it to really understand. Anyway, they leave me there for the police to find me, and the wire’s wound on tight, so I’m still struggling to get them off when security finds me ten minutes later.” Jason smirks. “Now those idiots had no clue who they were dealing with, and they loosened the wire round my legs, cause they sure as hell couldn’t carry me. By the time we reached the car I was out of the bonds and knocked one out and escaped from the other. Fat-ass bastard.”
“Language,” Bruce reminds him. Jason flips him off.
“Fine, the heavy-set bastard. Better?”
Bruce sighs. “Not really.”
“I scale the building, figuring the store entrances would be monitored. They had a nice handy dandy human-sized ventilation shaft up there - no wonder with the place’s fucking size - so, I shimmy down-”
“Like Santa,” Tim giggles, well past bordering on a manic state, and instead moved well into the capital of it.
The comment doesn’t appear to have fazed Jason though, who takes another long sip of his alcohol-soda mixture. “And like Santa, I have a knack for toys. I emerge out of a vent in the children’s toy area and snag myself a nerf gun.”
Sharp pain blooms on the side of Bruce’s neck. He doesn’t let it show on his face though. “Why?”
“Seemed like a good at the time, ya know?”
Bruce mentally counts to ten, takes a deep breath, and says, “Sure.”
“So, I head towards the play area to find Dick, because obviously, Replacement was a lost cause.”
“Geeze thanks, Jason.”
“But before I can get there, I spot Demon Spawn constructin’ a wacky ass Rube Goldberg contraption-”
Dick winces. “I saw the remains when I chased after Marinette. It was initially meant for me.”
“You were chasing the girl?”
Dick pouts. “She stole my phone!”
“Wait, so a civilian pickpocketed all of you?”
“She was quick,” mutters Tim.
Jason raises a finger. “She didn’t technically pickpocket me, she frisked me after tying me up. I was fully aware of the stealing.”
Bruce reminds himself that he can’t strangle his children. He. Can’t. Strangle. His. Children. “I plan to make all of you go through awareness training, again. A civilian!?”
“Still not convinced,” Jason mutters, crossing his arms.
“I don’t care she certainly hasn’t trained with assassins and spent half her life mastering stealth and deception. I expect better from you all.” All three men mutter in acquiescence, to the extent that they would do better. “Continue.”
Jason’s demureness fades to be replaced with a gleeful grin. “Yeah, there wasn’t much left of the trap after I jumped the little bastard. I started shooting-”
“Jason…” Bruce’s headaches gain a specific twinge of exhaustion whenever Jason becomes involved. It’s a talent he possessed since the day Bruce found him hi-jacking the Batmobile’s tires.
Jason’s hands go up in defense. “With the nerf gun, chill Bruce I ain’t trying to contribute to America’s public shooting crisis. I wouldn’t take a loaded gun into a shopin’ center unless crazies were already causin’ chaos.”
“I’d prefer you not to use guns at all.” It’s a pointless request, but maybe one day Jason would cede to it.
Jason scoffs. “Yeah, you’re still gunna lose that one pops. I got a rep to maintain.”
Bruce reigns in a sigh. Expected.
“Anyway, everythin’ was fine, I’d managed to dismantle their little trap for ya, you’re welcome,” he says with a pointed glance at Dick.
His eldest crosses his arms, and with a total deadpan stare, replies, “Thanks, Jason.”
“But then a security guard interfered after I knocked down a display or two.”
“So, you strung him up and gagged him?” Dick asks voice rising into the hysterical range.
Bruce now understands why Tim looks exhausted, dealing with the fallout from a situation this unhinged for the past forty-eight hours.
“No, I didn’t do that. Demon spawn already set the rig, waitin’ for you. The guard tripped it.” He pauses, cheese-covered chip in hand. “Although I did add the gag, he was shoutin’ too much and grabbin’ attention. It only took a second, but by the time I turned back, Damian had shot off like a rocket.”
“Don’t take your eyes off the target,” chides Tim, with a smug little grin.
Jason’s eyes flash a brighter shade of green. “Fire.”
“Shut up.”
“Boys…” Bruce warns.
“Fine, fine,” Jason mutters, as he takes another sip of his drink. “I chase him through the store and he’s barely keepin’ ahead of me. I keep shootin’ at him. Newer nerf guns have a range and a surprising amount of ammo. Bastard didn't even look inconvenienced; he takes a fucking phone call at one point.”
“That was when I was chasing Marinette and we found the remains of their plan,” Dick interrupts. “She panicked with the sprung trap and called someone, but I couldn’t hear a word.”
“Yeah, he jumps off the call when I manage a shot at his head, and I’m close enough to have him in reach. Unfortunately, he ducked into the employee-only entrance. We weave through security rooms and offices and shit, and of course, causin’ chaos there.”
“He was right there, and yet somehow, we’re the only ones banned,” mutters Tim.
Jason scoffs. “Yeah, don’t know how that happened. Pretty sure I saw him dump a pot of coffee on-” Tim groans in frazzled distress. “Bad Timbo, you can’t have any more caffeine until you take a goddamn nap!”
Tim slouches into the solid wood dining chair. “You can’t tell me what to do, you’re not my dad.”
“Tim you can’t have any more caffeine until you sleep,” Bruce says.
Jason grins, sticking his tongue out at Tim, while Tim only glares and mutters something under his breath about ‘killjoys’ and ‘he’ll show them tired’ and Bruce really doesn’t want to see the result of that decision. This needs to wrap up soon. For both Tim’s sake, and his own as his headache has moved from Hassles-have-evolved-into-ongoing-dumpster-fires to Information-overload-caused by-dumbass-decisions-please-reboot-system.
“I get tangled in an office jam – literally, there were cords involved and by the time I scramble out of it, Damian’s already through a door and down a hallway. I haven’t a clue which way he’s gone, so I pick a direction and gun it because security is on my tail and there ain’t time to waste. I head down a hallway and lock the doors behind me to give me a second of breathing room. Then I spot the intercom system.”
“I wondered how you got close enough to use that,” Dick muses.
“I wondered what they did to piss you off so bad,” Tim adds.
Dick nods. “Same.”
“Yeah, so I call out Demon Spawn and French Bitch over the intercom, and I know they both must have panicked, but the guards broke through the locked doors, so I split. Now here’s the fucking miracle.” Jason leans forward, grinning. “I find the door that’ll take me back to the showroom area, the guards bearing down on me from all four sides. I don’t have a chance in hell, when the lights go off.”
“Blackout?” questions Bruce.
“Magic,” Dick says flatly. “It was Marinette.”
Jason slaps the table, snarling, “Damnit! Now I have to give credit to her.”
“She knocked out electricity to the whole store,” says Tim.
“And caused a display to collapse in front of me. I tripped,” admits Dick.
“You have fought off assassins while poisoned, and executed advanced acrobatic maneuvers with broken bones, and you tripped over a toppled Swedish store display because of the dark?” Bruce knows he’s trained his children better. Why in the world did this go so sideways on them?
Dick braces his arms against the table and roughly slides his fingers through his hair. ”I know. I know. I was right there. Any other day and I wouldn’t have blinked about jumping right over it, but this time it felt… off. Bad day?”
“You’re getting old Golden Boy.” Jason takes a sip of his drink, doing nothing to hide his shit-eating grin as he teases his older brother. “I guess it’s all downhill from here ain’t it.”
Dick flips him off.
Jason sticks out his tongue.
Bruce’s headache takes on a twinge of my-children-are-immature-brats feeling (generally categorized by a sharp sting right at his temple) and holds in an exasperated sigh.
“So, after magic girl shuts the lights off with her mind or whatever, I escape the security guards by an inch. One emergency exit later, and I’m back in the store proper. People are freakin’ the fuck out about the lights. By the time they turn on again, I’ve lost Damian for good, and now I just try to stay off security’s radar. I settle in a nice little blind spot right outside the children’s toy area and keep myself out of any trouble.” Jason looks over at Dick, fighting to keep a smug grin off his face. “Course I did see a woman go off on a poor employee. I kept my nose clean of it ‘cause it wasn’t my business.”
“Oh, ha, ha very funny. That woman was a menace,” groans Dick.
“Woman?” Bruce questions, almost scared to ask.
“Jessica Merope-Laverne, fifty-five, resident of Pleasantville. Married twice, has two children, a restraining order, and a police file with multiple notes about disturbing the peace,” Tim rattles off. “Thoroughly unpleasant.”
“That’s an understatement,” mutters Dick.
“Practically dragged Dickie Bird away by the ear.”
“Right as I was about to nab Marinette too. She’d hidden in one of the wardrobes in the room, and I was this close-” Dick positions his fingers scant centimeters apart from each other, “-to cornering her, and I got dragged away.”
“Shit, would have loved to know that,” mutters Jason. “Anyway, I stood around, making sure nobody was on my tail, soon I heard rumors about a ruckus in the atrium-”
“That would be me,” Tim admits with a grin.
“Well, I didn’t know that. I was hoping demon spawn and Frenchie were involved somehow, so I headed over, and then-”
“Oh, I know what happened from there. I saw the video.” Bruce pins Tim and Jason with a stare. “I respect both of you have opinions-”
“Opinions? Opinions? I have justified grounds for calling out his revolutionary bullshit! His entire life embodies nothing but the anthesis of systemic poverty, and he argues for class cooperation!” shouts Jason. Bruce always marvels at how eloquent Jason becomes when angry.
“Violence isn’t the answer,” counters Tim. “You would harm the very people you try to uplift in the process.”
“Sure, it is! It’s the natural response to a gluttonous, greedy, overburdened, bureaucratic system that’s leeching off the populous and perpetuating its own supremacy.”
Tim slams a hand against the table, raising to his feet, exhaustion clearing from his eyes. “It’s an option, not the option. We can do better than violence if we work at the cause's root problem without pulling out a fucking guillotine.”
Jason rolls his eyes. “Oh of course you would argue for that, you’ve never had less than six figures in your bank account in your life.”
“So says the self-proclaimed drug lord!”
“That was ten years ago!”
“A bag of heads on the steps of the GCPD!”
“Oh, get over it!”
“If it matters,” interjects Dick. “Probably doesn’t, systemic economic issues are hard to fix when we have bigger problems like an actively insane criminal population that likes destroying important city infrastructure on a monthly basis.”
“Which Wayne Enterprises does its best to counter,” adds Bruce, not bothering to chide his children back on track. This particular topic turned them into a bunch of unherdable cats.
“Funneling more money into the one percent’s hands!” Jason’s bordering on manic at this point.
“We are the one percent, Jason!” counters Tim. “And we stay that way, despite the copious amount of infrastructure projects, that we hire Gotham citizens for, and pay at least a living wage to all of them. Not to mention every other single employee we hire who also are paid a living wage, with benefits, and support. I know I am privileged. I am trying here.” The last sentence came out as a distraught cry, as he collapses back into his chair.
“Are… are you okay?” Dick asks tentatively, ready to cross the table to comfort his brother.
Tim shoves his hands into his hair and mutters, “I need an espresso.”
“No, you need sleep,” says Bruce, mentally calculating where all the caffeine in the house is so he can hide it. “Can we return to the recap, so your brother can go to bed?”
“My side of things is much shorter in comparison to Jason’s,” says Dick. “As long as nobody interrupts.” Casting a pointed glare in Jason’s direction. Jason shrugs casually and crosses his arms.
“I waited at the children’s play area. Now, a man my age would attract attention without a need to be there, so I’d ducked into the employee-only area, and grabbed a shirt to disguise myself. I hung out in the Starbucks for a good forty-five minutes trying to look like I was on break while observing the play area. Although I couldn’t tell where the vent entrance was, I figured two adults Damian and Marinette’s size would be easy to spot coming out of an area meant for children.
“When an hour and a half passed by, I’m nervous, because neither Jason nor Tim has sent any word. I called them both. They didn’t answer.”
“Yeah, 'cause the French phone napper took our phones,” mutters Jason.
“So, I decided to do some reconnaissance. The lady at the front desk looked bored enough, and so I went over to… chat.”
Jason rolls his eyes. “You mean flirt.”
Dick glares. “Shut up. So, I hang around the front desk for half an hour at most, before the kids went crazy. Like plastic balls being thrown everywhere, kids shrieking, this one little girl, later we learn her name is Abby, she’s doing this whole speech about a revolution-”
“Tim…”
“Not me, I’m not here at this point.”
“I stand there in shock, wondering what the heck set it all off. This one little girl runs up to the daycare worker, Melinda? Melody? Something. I don’t remember. And the little girl’s nose was bleeding, so there immediately goes my peaceful cover. I back up into the crowd, which at this point has gathered around pretty thick.”
“You know I wondered why there were so many people hanging around in that front lobby area,” says Tim.
“I’m almost sure the commotion has something to do with Marinette and Damian, so I keep my eyes peeled waiting for any adult-sized figures to emerge from the play area.” Dick sighs, rubbing a hand across his face. “I was right of course, but I missed Marinette slipping out, and she approached me from behind.”
“This is where you get pickpocketed too!” crows Jason.
“Really, Richard?” asks Bruce with a raised brow. This is ridiculous.
“Okay, look, I was distracted, off my game, there was a ton of screeching, and it had been a long day. And she was very good. The technique was flawless, minus a bit of overacting and a touch of obviousness. Which was her goal because-”
“~It was a trap~” Jason and Tim sing together.
“It was bait,” Dick corrects. “Leading me to a trap, that didn’t even work. So really, I did the best between the three of us.”
“You all will complete remedial awareness training, so a situation like this never happens again.” Bruce massages the bridge of his nose with a long-suffering sigh. “Just… just please continue.”
“I can’t full-out chase her or anything, but she keeps out of reach through the store, until we reach the place where they set the trap. Obviously, Jason already tripped it, so she turned face and ran in the opposite direction. I followed, trying to convince her to stop and talk. But at this point, she’s full-on outpacing me and doing well too. I’m hesitant to say trained, but she had practice.”
“She’s gotta be a spy, or maybe she’s working for the League?” muses Jason.
“Damian would see right through that,” interrupts Bruce. He knows his youngest son has an instinct when sniffing out undercover League members. Talia certainly sent enough of them over the years.
“Maybe she’s just that good?” says Tim. “I certainly can’t find a damn thing on her, and being a League plant would explain that.”
Dick shrugs. “We’ll figure out her deal later. She calls Damian, and they talk briefly, but I couldn’t hear the conversation. Soon after Jason does his whole intercom takeover Marinette pulls out her little magic electro bursts and short circuits the electricity to the entire store.”
“And then caused you to trip.”
Dick wearily nods. “And then caused me to trip. By the time I detangle myself, she’s long gone. The lights come back on, and I’m stuck wondering where the hell she’s gone. I try to avoid getting clocked by security, so I keep to blind spots, which is how I eventually spot her doing the same.”
“Suspicious,” mutters Tim. “More evidence for the ‘League plant’ theory.”
“Or she could know security is looking for a woman of her description and she’s smart, either way, I tail her and corner her in a display room, no idea why she chose that one, but when I walk in it’s empty.”
“She teleported, or vanished like a ninja,” gasps Tim, eyes wide, pupils smaller than pinpricks. Bruce is now counting the seconds until he passes out.
Dick shakes his head. “No, she hid in the fucking closet. Tim, you need sleep.” Tim sticks out his tongue.
“I was this-” Dick places his fingers centimeters away from each other “-close to nabbing her, and then the whole Jessica situation happened.” He rubs a hand through already messed up, fly-away hair. “She drags me away screeching about lawyers and customer service, and it had been a very long day, so the second her back was turned I bolted. I couldn’t risk heading back to the display room, although if I were Marinette I’d be long gone, so I backtracked to where I stuffed my actual clothes and headed towards the atrium.”
“Yes, I saw your arrival as well,” Bruce confirms with an exasperated drawl. The videos spread out across multiple platforms gave an all-around idea of what happened in the atrium. “You all know better than to escalate things in public. We have an image to maintain after all." The boys nod, cowed and guilty. "That being said, things wrapped up rather neatly.” He eyes the boys with a paranoid weariness. “Too neatly.”
All three sag into their seats and gaze at each other with sheepish grimaces.
“Yeah, B, we noticed that too,” says Jason. “But at the time…” he trails off.
Tim continues, his speech sluggish. “It felt normal, to accept what was going on. The fight, the crazy lady, the little kid with the ball pit balls, her uncle being Dick’s old friend, and the store manager, and they let us go. It was easy to go along with it.” Grimacing, he gestures to his assorted piles of papers. “You know, besides for all the work I have now.” Crossing his arms on the table he lays his head in the middle. “Too many people, so little sense.”
“Damian hasn’t said a word about any of it.” Dick slouches lower in his chair.
“Kid was all smirks when he and the little liar approached us after we left the store,” grumbles Jason. "Had fuckin' ice cream and everything." He spins the almost empty bottle of alcohol coke on the table. “Of course, they made us wait, because after we left and booked it to the car, Dickie realizes his keys are gone too. So there we are standin' in the parking lot, Timmy doesn't have his shoes, and all we got between us is one nerf gun, no phones, no keys, and no fucks left to give.” Bruce, too tired from the absolute rollercoaster of emotions and information his children just sent him on, can do nothing but muster up a stern and disappointed glare. He trained them all better than to let a civilian pull one over on not just one of them, but all of them.
“Yeah, yeah, I know situational awareness. We’ll work on-” Dick breaks off his sentence, and sighs softly. A small soft smile overtakes his face, and he raises a single finger to his mouth. He nods in Tim’s direction.
Tim’s head, previously cradled in his arms, now lolls to the side. Neon blue light from his laptop highlighted his closed eyes, and the purplish bags underneath.
“Finally,” Jason mutters. “I swear he has the survival instincts of a wet paper bag. He’s been up for way too long.”
Bruce is just grateful he won't need to physically drag Tim off to bed and force him to get some desperately needed sleep. “Now we just need to get him to his room.” He would have done it himself if his ribs didn’t spasm the second he thought of the idea.
“Not it,” Dick whispers so quickly it’s practically a rush of air.
“Not it,” says Jason, barely a millisecond behind.
“Ha!” Dick impishly grins. “You do it.”
“But-”
“Nope, I said it first. You got to carry him.”
Jason turns his head towards Bruce, big bluish-green eyes looking for support.
Bruce doesn’t get himself involved in the decision-making games his children play. “He said it first.”
Jason’s hopeful glance turns into a disgruntled snarl. “I hate both of you,” he spits.
“Love ya too, Jay.”
“Thank you, Jason.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he mutters, wrinkling his nose. Jason pushes back his chair, and although he’s annoyed, the solid wood chair doesn’t scrape against the floor, so he can’t be too mad. Despite drinking his entire liter of mystery-alcohol-diet-coke mixture, his footsteps pace steady and strong. “Come here, ya little coffee-addicted gremlin.” Jason slips his arms around Tim’s body. It’s a testament to how exhausted his son must be, that Tim only flutters his eyes and protests incoherently at being lifted out of his chair.
“Quiet down, Replacement,” Jason murmurs, his voice soft as he speaks to his sleep-deprived brother. “All your calls and research will be there when you return from the land of nod.”
“But…”
“You can go willingly, or I can grab sedatives from the med bay and forcefully put your ass to sleep. I’ll put a bet on who’ll win that brawl.” Jason stands a good six inches taller than Tim, who looks like little more than a bedraggled rag doll in his older brother’s arms. Bruce knew who would win that fight too. Tim sighs and relaxes another inch into Jason’s arms. “There ya go. You can go back to bein’ insufferable once you’ve had some fucking sleep.”
“Hmm…” Tim's eyes fully flutter shut. Jason shakes his head and rolls his eyes, but softly traverses the room so as to not jostle him. Looking back over his shoulder one last time to shoot an I-can’t-believe-I’m-doing-this look at Bruce and Dick, before walking out of the room.
Silence overtakes the grand dining room as the last of Jason’s footsteps fades into the echoing halls of Wayne Manor. A light rain drizzles outside, the faintest patter hitting the tall arched windows letting in a soft grey light.
Dicks groans, pulling himself out of his slouch gracefully and into more of a respectable position. “I’m getting too old for that.”
“If you’re old, I must be ancient,” Bruce responds. He’s not, really. Only forty-seven to Dick’s thirty-two. What he’d been thinking taking in a ten-year-old at twenty-five, he couldn’t really quite say. The only thing that mattered at the time was the aching echo of loneliness reflected in the eyes of a child who had just lost their parents.
Now, look at them, all these years later.
“Nah, you’re not ancient, B. We’ve just been through enough shit in our lives to age a person twenty times over.”
Bruce gives him a look of high disappointment. “Stunts like this do not help, Richard.”
Dick has the decency to look properly ashamed. “I really didn’t mean for the situation to get so out of hand,” Dick insists in a soft, quiet tone. Bruce doesn’t quite believe it. His sons thrive off of chaos. Even if they didn’t mean for things to get out of hand, they tended to actively encourage it once in the middle of the undertow. “I know, I know, but how was I supposed to anticipate Damian teaming up with a… witch? Magician? Whatever she is.” Dick mutters the last sentence, but Bruce hears it clearly.
His sons certainly think the young woman is dangerous. Tim is thoroughly confused and stressed by her existence, although deciphering his third son’s emotions through his fog of exhaustion is a vexing endeavor Bruce still isn’t sure he accomplishes all the time. Jason clearly hates her or at least is holding a very large, very deep grudge against her. He wonders what exactly the content of the conversation was when she threatened Tim and Damian. He wonders if she knew the effect it would have on Jason.
Flickering light from the chandelier above pierces his eyes like a particularly vicious game of stab-the-vigilante, but this conversation is important, so, despite the full body ache accompanying his you’ve-pushed-too-far-and-now-you’ll-suffer-the-consequences migraine, he pushes through to ask, “What do we actually know about her?”
Dick sighs heavily, rubbing a hand across his face, and suddenly he looks every inch of his thirty-two years. “To be honest? Only a little. Tim wasn’t the only one to look her up. I did my searching too.”
“And?”
“Practically nothing. Basic info, but school records sealed tighter than Fort Knox, and firewalls grow tighter every time I try to hack ‘em. School activities, online media presence, and even pictures; all of it is whisps in the wind. Every time I try to look deeper, something...” Dick shudders as if shaking away a bad feeling. “I come up short and I can’t find a reason why. Even trying to think about Paris as a whole feels off and I can’t put my finger on it.”
“I can see if there’s anything in the League’s database about the city the past few years. It was Diana’s home base for decades until…” Bruce trails off, his mind an unexpected blank. Diana moved to the US from Paris eventually. Sometime within the last decade, but he can’t quite remember why. Surely, she must have told him at some point.
“She’s a fashion designer, I know that much. She has a website but it’s very bare bones. Commission work only. And her current course of study at Gotham U is Fashion and Business Management. But-” Dick’s hands flail into the air. “She’s from Paris! What on earth possessed her from moving from one of the fashion capitals of the world to here, to study fashion is beyond me.”
“Hmmm…” Bruce’s brain whirls at a million miles a minute. Connections forming and rearranging on his mind’s case board. The incongruency is so stark, there must be a reason. They haven’t found it yet.
“As for her magic…” Dick shrugs. “She said her powers mostly affected situational outcomes, and from the incidents I saw, she told the truth. But I’ve never seen magic like that before. Magic that just… happens. She didn’t say words, she didn’t make hand gestures. She used tiny little - I want to call them mechanized balls, but we never came close enough to tell – to kickstart the magic.”
“A techno-mage then?”
Dick contemplates the idea for a moment before saying, “Could be. But it felt more than that. As soon as she became involved the whole day felt… left of normal. Which I suppose aligns with situational outcome manipulation. The day certainly went their way…” Dick shrugs. “I just don’t know.”
Bruce hums, finally asking the question that had swirled in his mind since the girl was brought up. “Do you think she’s a danger?”
Dick leans back in the chair, his face an avalanche of flickering emotions. Wind lightly howled outside the dining hall filling the intervening silence. Finally, he sighs and says, “No, I don’t think so. She was chaotic sure but genuinely enjoyed the game for what it was. Damian probably encouraged the more unhinged ideas. And yes, she has magic, but so do a ton of other, far more obviously dangerous people. Our system is tricked out for all types of magic users, and even if she can bypass them due to her own unique magic, we’d at least receive a warning. And as for our identities…” Dick half-smiles. “She didn’t even know we were the ‘Waynes’ until we were just about to leave, and she didn’t appear particularly star-struck. I doubt she’d make the jump from chaotic billionaire’s kids to vigilantes.”
“As for Damian…?” Bruce hardly knows what to make of his youngest’s out-of-character reaction and hopes to receive some cohesive read on the situation from his eldest.
Dick, being quite unhelpful, shrugs. “I think you should talk to him. Get his side of the story. Things may have been chaotic on our end, but he did genuinely have fun. And, yes, he’s acting out of the norm.” Dick pauses. “Way, way, out of the norm for him, but I don’t think he’s enchanted. I think he just has a crush.”
Bruce blinks. Isn’t that a hell of a thought?
Damian.
With a crush.
He doesn’t have the bandwidth to deal with these kinds of realities. Reflexively he massages his temple with the tips of his fingers trying to relieve the paining, aching pressure.
“Headache again?” asks Dick with sympathy. After twenty years his son knows his tells well, and Bruce has always had headaches, although his reasons for having them have certainly increased over the years.
“Yeah, is what it is though. We’ll keep an eye on Damian, have you run him through the influence-affected protocols?”
“Yeah.”
“And?”
Dick shrugs. “Nothing, it’s mostly why I think he’s fine. She may be a danger, or powerful, but I don’t think she’s doing anything to Damian. Besides making him run up the data plan on his phone. He really hasn’t stopped texting the past two days.”
They’ve spent plenty of time talking about Damian, but Bruce hasn’t seen a glimpse of him since he woke up this morning. “Where is he?”
Dick pulls out his phone. “On a date, according to Stephanie.” Pulling up a photo that’s taken in a long-distance setting. Damian is pictured, seated at a cafe table, drinking out of a white coffee cup. Across from him sits a girl, Asiatic features, black hair, clad in a colorful sundress. They’re both smiling at each other.
It’s normal and adorable. And slightly worrying. Damian doesn’t smile like that unless looking at a fluffy four-legged creature.
“Stephanie trailed him?”
Dick flips the phone away. “Actually, she and Cass both followed him when he left this afternoon. Not sure what they planned, but they’ve sent some nice pictures.” He pauses for a moment and smiles fondly. “If she’s not a danger, or a League plant, this could be really good for him.”
Bruce hums, unsure, and hating himself for that unsurety. He’ll make a call when he has more information, and less of a migraine. “Go wash up and grab some sleep. I’m out until my ribs heal, so I’ll need you to take point on patrol.”
Rising from his chair, Dick stretches and shoots him a grin. “It took you twenty-five years, but damn, you’ve finally learned to call it quits when you need a break. Proud of you B.”
Bruce doesn’t bother to disguise his roll of the eyes. Dick would know he did it regardless. “Get on.”
Dick shoots him a lazy salute. “Sir, yes, sir.” He ambles to the door, and Bruce calls out again before he’s gone.
“And next time, Dick, please try to keep the antics out of the paper, and off the internet.”
The shit-eating grin betrays Dick’s real thoughts when he says, “Of course Bruce, won’t happen again.”
Liar.
Bruce shakes his head in reluctant bemusement – should he honestly have expected anything else – and Dick ducks out of the door without another word. Finally, the dining room is quiet, except for the pitter-patter of rain on the window panes, and the soft hum of Tim’s computer.
Carefully, Bruce rises from the chair, his side twinging, head throbbing in what is now a full-on migraine.
He should have stayed in bed.
Ah, well, he’s suffered worse, and now he has a good idea of what happened with his sons that caused a headache so insistent he felt it halfway across the galaxy.
Gently closing Tim’s laptop, he doesn’t bother to touch the articles and paper, knowing his son’s organizational system may appear a mess to outsiders – even him on occasion – but that it has meaning for him. He observes the rest of the room; collecting Tim’s coffee mugs, and Jason’s empty plate and coke bottle – no need to have Alfred do it if he was right here – and ambles slowly to the kitchen taking care not to drop the dishes or disturb his ribs.
Placing the dishes away, Bruce leans heavily on the counter. Mind whirling, analyzing, and connecting the information as he has always done, however, it battles for dominance over the present, persistent, migraine. His body screams for more rest, and as much as he wishes to dig to the bottom of these problems right now, he trusts Dick has given him an accurate read of the situation. Later he can pry information from the girls, maybe they’ll have a less biased view of Damian’s… friend than his sons do.
He flicks the lights off in the kitchen, for now though, he’s heading back to sleep.
-line break-
A nap, a full meal, and hours later, the pitch black of the night concealed a heavier storm than the light drizzle which draped over the manor earlier in the day. Bruce, knowing damn well he wasn’t fit for patrol, sat in his office, a bottle of forty-year whisky perched next to a crystalline tumbler and a box of chocolates. A minor indulgence, especially as he should stay far away from alcohol at the moment. But if he hadn’t died from insane nutcases, aliens, or his children’s antics, mixing medicine and alcohol probably wouldn’t kill him.
Bruce snapshots a picture of the newspaper Alfred gave him this morning.
The front-page cover contains enough of the story to showcase the significant amount of drama his children had caused.
He texts the images to both Diana and Clark.
All he adds is, ‘I always know, and I’m always right.’
He pours another finger of the amber liquid into his glass and swirls it around as the computer turns on. Just because he wasn’t out and about, didn’t mean he intended to take the night off. Bruce stretches his fingers and opens up a blank case file template.
Time to find out who exactly is Marinette Dupain-Cheng.

Sex pollen
Tumblr media
Dick Grayson x reader
Warning: It’s on sex pollen so there is a dub con warning despite the fact that they are willing participants.
Summary: all of the batboys are dusted with Poison Ivy’s sex toxin and think they’ve taken an antidote. It didn’t quite work. This is the story about what happens to Dick.
Beginning Jason Tim Bruce
Dick pushed off of the roof before feeling weightless as he fell towards the ground. He shot the grappling hook and swung to another building. He leaped into a flip before swinging to yet another building where he did a handspring before landing. He ran across the roof before leaping again. This time he landed quietly on a fire escape.
Down below was a pair of drug dealers talking. Dick watched for a few minutes before jumping down in front of them. They yelled out before pulling guns. How predictable. Dick dropped a smoke bomb before leaping over to kick the gun from one guy. He twisted midair to elbow the other one in the face. The first guy throw a punch that Dick ducked.
He swept the guy’s legs out from under him before kicking the other guy in the head. The first guy ran at Dick with a knife. Dick shoved him against the wall and placed plastic cuffs on him. Dick’s heart beat quickened and he was confused. Why the fuck was he horny? He quickly cuffed the second guy and jumped up to the roof and over a few buildings before calling in to GCPD about the men.
He adjusted his cup in his suit and started moving again. What the hell? It’d go away on its own. He’d had boners as Robin a few times as a teen. Excitement of the job had made blood flow and it wasn’t sexual but just awkward. Thank god for a cup back then.
He noticed a guy pushing a woman in the alleyway. It looked like a domestic abuse call. Dick jumped down in front of them.
“Why don’t you hit someone your own size,” he said with a dangerous smirk. The guy frowned and shoved the woman behind him.
“Get out of here, mask. We don’t need you,” he said.
“I knew you’d say that. Let’s leave the lady alone for the night, hu? Take a walk,” Dick said. She gulped.
The guy tried to throw a punch at Dick who grabbed his head and pushed him against the wall. The guy fell down unconscious. Abusers can never take a hit. The woman ran to Dick and gave him a hug. He almost jumped away from her as his body reacted. Okay, that was awful.
“No problem ma’am,” he yelped before swinging to the roof. Go home, Dick. Don’t be a weirdo mask running around with a boner saving the city. He swung back to his apartment and in the window.
“Hey Dickie, lookin good,” you said as you made tea. He almost jumped out of his skin. That’s right, you were staying at his place as your apartment was being fumigated. “Did I scare you?”
“No. My mind was elsewhere,” he said with a smile, pulling off his mask. “I’ve got to shower,” he said moving up the bathroom. He turned on the warm water and started pulling off his suit. The cup was painfully constricting and he sighed with relief as it was gone.
Dick stood under the water and started stroking himself. You were his girlfriend but he didn’t know how you’d react to him coming home with a raging boner after patrol. He was too lost in the sensations to hear the bathroom door open but he heard the shower door open as you walked in nude.
“Woah,” you giggled. “Caught you.”
“You did,” he said feeling his skin turn pink.
“Mind if I uh help out,” you said with a wink. You walked up behind him and wrapped your hand around his and controlling the stroke. After a little bit, your hand took over and Dick made a soft sigh. He turned his head to kiss whatever he could reach, the side of your head and hair at the moment. He slowly turned in your arms and grasped your face to kiss you deeply. His tongue slid against yours. His other hand played with your breast, squeezing and running a finger along your nipple.
The water poured over your bodies and you felt your skin heat up and all you could think about was Dick. Specifically his dick. As if he could read your mind, Dick reached his hand down to rub your clit and dip down to finger you. He let open mouthed kisses down the column of your neck.
“I don’t know what’s gotten into you mmmn, but I like it,” you breathed. He chuckled against your skin. Dick kissed over your breasts and down your belly and on your hip bones before kneeling in front of you. He ran a hand up one of your legs before lifting it on his shoulder. He licked a long strip up your slit and you gasped before holding his shoulder. Dick began to vigorously eat you out. You gasped and moaned and clung to him.
“Oh fuck! Don’t stop, I’m close,” you whined and he hummed against your skin. He wrapped his lips around your clit and sucked as his tongue swiped over the bud and you lost it. You moaned loudly and your hips jumped as he continued through your high. You had to push his face away as you stood shaky. Dick smiled up at you.
“Come on,” you said and he quickly complied. Dick slid his tongue in your mouth again and you wrapped a leg around his waist. He moved his hips to slid in. Dick pushed you against the shower wall and held the tiles above your head as he thrust in you. His thrusts were slow and languished and he seemed to want to feel every inch of your core. He gave a strong thrust and you almost fell down scrambling to grab him.
“I got you,” he said. “Let’s get to bed,” he said pulling out and helping you from the shower. The look on his face quieted your protest at the water on the floor and the shower still running. He wanted you badly. Dick picked you up in the hall and you wrapped your legs around his waist. He fucked up into you as he walked towards the bed. He settled for the dresser that was perfect height. You ass sat between the alarm clock and a book as he thrust up in you. Dick’s pace increased and you knocked the book to the floor. You held the mirror behind you as he overwhelmed your senses. It didn’t take much for you to cum again. Dick shortly behind with a few rough thrusts through his high.
“Fuck that was,” you panted. Dick picked you up by the waist. You yelped in surprise.
“I promised you the bed,” he said with a husky voice. You raised a brow but let him carry you to the bed. Okay, someone was in a mood. You weren’t complaining.
Dick hiked your legs on his shoulder and slid in again. You yelped at the suddenness. He slowly circled your clit while keeping a steady pace with his hips. You moaned and closed your eyes as you got close to another orgasm. Dick quickly pushed you over the edge and you clenched around him. His pace didn’t slow down and you looked at him in surprise. He was usually cum around the same time kinda guy.
“Baby,” he whined as he pounded in you. You felt breathless and your senses were overwhelmed.
“Are you close?” You asked and he nodded. His hand holding up your legs tightened as he came. Dick roughly shoved himself deep before stopping. His heart pounded and you could see him sweating. He pulled out and looked down at you. His fingers went to touch your pussy and you pulled away.
“Okay tiger. 3 is enough for me,” you said and he stopped. Dick made a plaintive whine and began jerk himself off.
“What’s gotten into you,” you frowned sitting up on your elbows. He looked desperate.
“Sex pollen,” he breathed and you gasped. You’d heard of it but never seen it. “Hurts. Hurts when I stop.”
“Lay down. I’ll help you,” you said and he quickly complied. His cock stood at attention despite earlier activities. You took him in hand and started stroking him. Dick groaned and his hips jumped every once in a while. You tried to keep him going but not push him over the edge too fast. A bunch of orgasms could be painful so just long sessions had to be better, right?
“Please let me cum,” he begged. Or maybe not. You sped your hand up and he came quickly on his stomach. Dick’s chest heaved as he tried to pull you into a kiss. “Do you need more,” you asked and he nodded quickly. You bent between his legs and settled down to blow him.
Dick groaned pornographically. He gripped the sheets tightly. You slowly bobbed along his link when you heard a knocking at the window that caused you to jump. You pulled off to look over to see a small robot holding a bag. Dick whined when you got up to look at it. The Wayne Enterprise symbol on the side had you opening the window and taking the bag before it flew off.
Dick had gotten up and stood behind you. He rubbed his cock against your ass and kissed your neck as you read the note. You pulled out a set of vials of grey liquid.
“Take this,” you said handing him one. Dick looked at it weird before downing it. You took the other one just in case. You hadn’t kissed Dick in a while and felt pretty clearheaded. He grabbed the side of your face to pull you back under. His tongue gently pushed into your mouth and you moaned at his touch. He pressed his cock between your ass cheeks and rutted against you.
You bent over and pushed your ass out for him to slide in. You gasped and held the still open window sill as he thrust inside you. Your body was exhausted but you wanted more. His fingers between your legs had you clenching around him one more time. He was borderline crying by the time he orgasmed.
Dick simply held your waist loosely as he tried to catch his breath. He whined when he pulled out. Dick simply flopped on the bed. You climbed next to him. It was finally over. You turned to look at him but Dick was already asleep. You quickly followed. You would worry about the aftermath later.

1. Ginger Snap
This one will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first fic I wrote (for DC, for JayDick, for ao3) a year ago today actually. I will take any and all opportunities to push my Jason & Colin dad agenda, so for your consideration:
There’s a shift in the shadows as the monstrous form ripples and shrinks down into the small body of a ginger-haired boy no older than Damian. He shrugs off the weighty brass knuckles and coat, tucking them into a bag hidden behind the dumpster, before scurrying towards the orphanage’s back entrance.
Jason stands frozen in place for countless minutes as his thoughts race, questions stumbling over themselves to be answered. However, the only thing he can articulate fully is, what the fuck?
2. You’re My Only Hope
This one was my most ambitious project all year (& the longest at 35k) so if you like Star Wars AUs then have I got a fic for you:
A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away…
It is a period of civil war. Aided by rebel spies, a young cyborg breaks free of his captors to bring important information to the hidden rebel base on Nanda Parbat. During the escape, a devastating blow from his Imperial pursuers forces him to crash land on the mostly lawless city-planet of Gotham, where scum gather to trade on the Black Market.
Stored in Kon’s systems is the secret location of a “weapon” that could change the tide of the war in the League of Rebels’ favor. Their dwindling forces have become no match for the Justice Lords’ reign of terror over the Galaxy, and he needs all the help he can get to reach safety.
Thankfully, a young prince in exile, his droid companion, and a group of Outlaws desperate for money, happen to be at the right place at the right time to do the unthinkable--restore freedom to the Galaxy…
3. Ghosts in the Attic
My first attempt at writing in the Gotham By Gaslight universe as well as my first PWP fic and I’m kind of proud of that. So if you like Valet Jason lightly domming Dick, then this fic (& smutty series) is for you:
Morning birds chattered amongst themselves outside, the creaks and groans of the staff preparing for the masters of the manor to rise trickled through the house, and the squelching drip of cum still in Dick’s ass as Jason played with the ring of muscle, all coalesced into a song Jason could listen to every hour of every day.
4. A Spoonful of Sugar
This is much more niche, but still warms my heart. From the Damian/Colin Domestic sweetness to Baby Dickie and the Reverse Robins trope to the fun & sadness of soulmate AUs, I think this is my favorite of the Damian Wayne Week fics I did. So if all or any of that appeals to you, then try this:
Damian and Colin comfort a distraught Dick in the middle of the night. Thankfully, the boy is in good hands.
5. just one kiss?
I’m a sucker, a sap, a simp if you will, for Circus Boy Dick, and that flashback scene in the RH Annual where Jason went to Haly’s Circus lives rent-free in my head 24/7, so of course I had to write a spin-off of it. I will never stop writing versions of that moment, and if you liked it as much as I did, maybe try this:
He held the flame to the candle and nearly jumped when the wick caught right away, fire swirling in a rainbow of color that felt mesmerizing to behold. Jason lost a couple of moments just staring as it danced. Teasing him, tempting him, making him rethink his dismissal of its magical properties. What if it was real? What if he could spend the night in a memory, change things and see what if…?
But where would he go? What would he do?
There were many more to choose from (at least 71 fics all from last year) because it’s been such a fun year and I can’t wait to spread the love:
Tagging in case you haven’t been already <3 @mlim8 @heyitsani @justtoarguewithyou @horseyw and anyone else who wants to!

BatMom- Jason Todd
Masterlist
Part 1
Part 2[Here]
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Jason Todd, Her Toughest Bird.
Marinette paced the Batcave anger clear on her face as she waited for Batman to get back with his newest Robin. She couldn’t believe Batman would go this far, he knew damn well that wasn’t his name to give away. Her thoughts were interrupted by the Batmobile skidding into the cave and parking. Batman and the young boy getting out, the new Robin took one look at her before sizing her up with a glare.
“Who's the angry lady B?” He said looking ready for a fight, which amused Marinette slightly. But her gaze focused on Batman as she upped her glare.
“Hello B, we need to talk.” She said stiffly before looking down at the boy with a stern look. “Alone.” She said firmly gesturing to the changing rooms. Jason huffed, pulling off his mask walking passed her indignantly. Marinette wasted no time tearing into Bruce the moment the door was closed.
An hour later Marinette walked through the halls of the manor a frown still on her face. She stopped outside an opened door looking in on the newly adopted Jason Todd-Wayne. “Kid,” She called out catching his attention. “want to go out for ice cream?” Jason scoffed, closing his book giving her a deadpan look.
“Ya great idea let me go out with a woman that obviously doesn’t like me.” He said sarcastically waving his hand at her in a go away gesture. “Why would I even want to go with you in the first place?” Marinette smirked leaning against the door.
“First off I don’t know you enough to not like you, my anger at B will not be dragged over to you. “Second off we are going to Pico’s Ice Cream Gotham’s world renown Ice Cream Parlor, over two hundred flavors, I intend for us to eat so much Alfred has to pick us up. Finally B is paying and after your stunt with his tires, something tells me you’d be more than happy to waste his money.” She held up her hand showing Bruce’s Amex Black card held between her index and middle fingers. “So are you in or not kid?” Jason smirked, placing his book down and jumping out of his chair.
“Oh I am so down! Let's go get sick to our stomachs with Bruce paying!”
An hour later Alfred had arrived at Pico’s giving both of them a disappointed glare as they climbed into the shortened limo he had brought. Marinette and Jason laid on the floor facing each other, curled in on themselves.
“Was it worth it Miss Marinette, Master Jason.”
“Definitely.”
“Hell yes.”
The two groaned out their response together shortly followed by a yelp from Jason after she had flicked his nose.
“Watch your language.” She said causing him to grumble while Alfred simply sighed, closing the door. A few moments later they felt the limo begin to move. Marinette closed her eyes trying to calm her churning stomach, well aware of Jason’s eyes on her.
“Why were you so mad at Bruce?” He asked softly, wanting to know yet not at the same time. Marinette was silent for a moment before opening her eyes, meeting his own.
“B gave away something that wasn’t his to give away. Dick hadn’t let go over the title just yet, and Bruce in his anger ripped it away from him and gave it to you instead. He really hurt Dickie, that’s why I was so angry at him. Not at you, you’re innocent in this Jason.” She said softly groaning when Alfred took a sharp turn, showing his displeasure with his two current charges. “My anger is all towards B right now.” Jason nodded thinking over what she had said before he had another question.
“Why do you call him B, why not just say Bruce?” Marinette was silent before looking away with a slight blush.
“B stands for bitch and he knows it.” She said causing Jason to grin at her.
“Language.”
“Shut it little birdie.”

Jason Todd, The Night Joker took him.
She sat at the door curled up crying begging for forgiveness, and Jason-Jason couldn’t find it in himself to give it. This woman, this woman had caused this, Sheila Haywood was no saint. No she was far from it, and unfortunately she was his mother. She was the one that gave birth to him, and now she’d be the one to help kill him. A dark part of him was happy she’d go with him but he’d never admit that out loud. His thoughts strayed from his so called mother as he watched the timer slowly countdown. Instead he thought of the one woman in his life that always tried. That was always there for him, that always stood up for him, and helped him build a relationship with his predecessor. He thought of the terrible fight they had, though he knew that it was mostly on his part. He had gotten too hard headed and Marinette was always stubborn and unwilling to bend with things she believed in. His Marinette wanted to help him meet his mother, she did even though it hurt her slightly and he had known it. She had helped him unlike Bruce who refused after the fight they had had, she helped even though it hurt. Yet he persisted and pushed and pushed until they finally found the women. Jason had insisted that he left for Ethiopia right away, planning to go alone. Ever protective Marinette had refused, told him he would not go alone and that they would go together.  She said she’d have everything ready at the end of the month, but that was not soon enough for him. He snapped at her demanding that she stayed out of it. He declared it was a family matter, and ignored the hurt in her eyes. She had told him not to be hard headed and that she was coming along. Only to be silenced and told that she was not going, he was being so stupid, he let his temper get the best of him. He told her she wasn’t family, that she was nothing but the woman that chased after his adoptive Father. Trying to find any excuse to have his attention, he regretted it so much when he watched her close in on herself. Her blue eyes dulled so much they looked gray, her ever perfect posture faltered but he hadn’t cared. He turned and left her there all alone. Just like he was now, all alone wishing that his mom was there. Wishing that his Marinette, his Mom was hugging him and running her fingers through his red hair.
“Jay-bird.”
That was it, that's mom’s voice.
“Jay-bird, I don’t know if you can hear me, Gods I hope you do.”
He could hear the shake in her voice as his eyes landed on what he thought was his broken communicator.
She’s crying, she should never cry.
“Bruce is on his way my little Fire-Cracker.”
She said choking back a sob, Jason twitched in his bond moving closer towards the communicator. His body protested every move as he made his way.
“Dickie isn’t on Earth right now but I told Clark he better get his ass off planet and to him as soon as possible.”
Jason let out a pain chuckle at her swearing, she rarely did it and it always surprised him to hear. Foul language was his thing; it should’ve never fallen from his mom’s mouth. Especially for the fact that she disliked crude language.
“Jay?”
She heard him, she can hear him.
“I’m here.”
He said his voice horse as he shed a few tears.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I snapped at you, after everything you did, I hurt you so much. I’m so sorry Mom. I should’ve stayed, I should’ve listened, I’m so sorry. I just want to be with you. I want to be with you so bad mommy.”
He said desperate for the women to know, desperate for forgiveness from his mother.
“Jay, my sweet baby bird, it's okay. Oh baby, I love you so much my beautiful boy. You wanted to find your birth mother and I will never hold that against you. You have nothing to be sorry for, you hear me?”
Nine Seconds.
Jason’s eyes remain on the timer.
“Mommy, I love you. Thank you for everything.”
Eight Seconds.
“Don’t-”
Marinette’s voice cracked as she cried into her hands.
Seven Seconds.
“Please tell Dickie I love him and he was an amazing brother.”
Six Seconds.
“Don’t-Don’t say goodbye, this is goodbye Jason! You hear me! this isn’t goodbye.”
She finished her voice in a pained whisper.
Five Seconds.
“Tell Bruce he’s an asshole, but I loved him.”
Four Seconds.
“Tell Alfred I love him too.”
Jason was crying uncontrollably as he spoke.
Three Seconds.
“Mom?”
Two Seconds.
“Yes baby boy?”
One Second.
“Don’t blame yourself.”
Marinette stared at the casket, unable to console herself and stop the tears. Her baby boy was in there, her tough little bird. He was gone and she wasn’t there, she failed him. A mother is meant to protect, and she didn’t protect. She should’ve followed him to Ethiopia, she shouldn’t have let her feeling of hurt get the best of her. A sob fell from her lips as her shoulders shooking, her posture breaking as she curled in on herself. Her baby bird will never fly again, he will never read her poetry or discuss his favorite books with her again. No, now she’d have to visit him here, for the rest of her life. Now she’d have to talk to a gravestone every time she saw her baby bird.
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, Red Hood Finds her.
He watched her for weeks ever since he had officially come back to Gotham. Watching her as Ladybug, Lady Noir, and Marinette, watching the woman he had called mother. The mother that had seemingly moved on from him, along with his so called Father and brother. He saw her spend countless nights with his replacement, she had never gone on patrol with him as much as she did with the new one. She, of course, didn’t realize she was being watched. Old age he supposed his once mother looked much older since the last time he saw her, before he died. Black hair now greying and everything so perhaps he could not fault her for not noticing.
This night was special though, for weeks she had been fighting him with the so-called Batfamily. Tonight, exactly three days after he shot the replacement, she would find out that he was her ‘Baby-bird’.
He watched as she picked up the phone, no doubt Bruce or Alfred, his amusement faded when tears began to fall. He always hated when she cried, she was always so happy and collected. She rarely cried and when she did it was so heart wrenching, because Marinette cried with her entire body. He watched as she dropped the phone and rushed to the balcony, he saw the small red and black Gods following her. Heard her voice crying out as she threw the doors open.
“Plagg, Claws out!”
She transformed and was traveling across the rooftops in minutes. She was making her way towards Bludhaven only to be met halfway by Nightwing. Immediately breaking down into her eldests arms.
“It's him, it's him, it's him. It's my babybird! It’s my baby! It's my baby!”
Her cries caused Red Hood to flinch as he turned his gaze away from the mourning mother. He took one last glance before turning away returning to his current safe house.
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, Saving him from Himself.
“Don’t do this.” Her voice called out, it was calm as always yet filled with pain. She limped toward him holding her side tenderly in an attempt to stop the bleeding from her wound. “Don’t do this Baby boy.” Red Hood growled leveling the gun on her as he turned away from the downed third Robin. He froze the moment he saw Marinette, not Lady Noir, not Ladybug, but Marinette, his Marinette. Beaten, Bloody, and Bruised, all caused by him and his men. She didn’t even flinch at the gun pointed at her even though it was clear that her injury was a bullet wound.
“Shut up you fucking liar.” He growled out red tinting his vision once again as he thought of her protecting his replacement. Thought of all the videos of her with little Tim Drake, the newest Robin, all the pictures of her at school events. The actual adoption of not just him, but of her perfect first son. That one had hurt him the most, she had adopted them but not him.
“I am a liar.” She admitted softly continuing towards her son. Looking up at the young man, but always her babybird. “I am. I promised you that I’d always be with you, that I’d protect you. I failed you and I have blamed myself every day. I should’ve followed you, I should’ve found you, I should’ve protected you. But I failed you instead.” She stopped with the gun barely an inch away from her forehead, and for a second she marveled at how tall her baby was now compared to her. She wished she could see his face, see how handsome her beautiful boy had turned out. While Dick had grown into a beautiful young man, she knew her tough little bird would grow into a very handsome man. “You have every right to be angry with me, but not him. He looked up to you, still does, he pulled Bruce, Dick, and me out of the dark place we were in after your death. Not once did he wish to replace you, not once did he shy away from mentioning you. If you want to take your anger out on somebody, make it me.” She closed her blue bell eyes picturing her little red headed bird with his mischievous smile, and love for literature. Marinette leaned her head forehead allowing the barrel of his gun to press against her head. Her free hand shook as she reached out, caressing the red helmet with her knuckles. She opened her eyes again, tears staining to fall from the now dulled grayish blue. “Just remember I love you my little Fire-Cracker, though you’re not exactly little anymore are you.” She choked out holding back a sob as she let her hand drop her legs shaking from exhaustion. “If you’re going to kill us then take me first. Please I don’t think I can bear to watch another one of my birds die.” She barely finished before exhaustion caught up to her and she began to collapse. She didn’t hit the ground though, no she was pulled into strong arms. Arms that held her tightly cradling her and providing safety. Red Hood stared down at the woman in his arms, the red having long faded as tears fell hidden by the helmet. Jason Todd-Wayne held his hurt mother in his arms as he let himself cry.
“Stupid woman, Stupid Mom.” He whispered before moving her so that she laid beside her newest bird. “Don’t say a word you fucking replacment.” He growled out as said bird looked up at him in surprise. “You better fucking protect her or else I will kill you.” He growled glaring at the small shy smirk on the bird’s face.
“Watch your language, you know her thoughts on cussing.”
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, Bruce’s Death.
Jason Todd-Wayne sat atop Wayne Enterprises staring down at the city he was born into. Bruce was gone, he was gone and Jason didn’t know what to think of it. Dick was taking up the cowl, making Bruce’s actual son his new Robin. Tim had taken over Wayne Enterprises, the youngest CEO in the world. Meanwhile here was Jason still legally dead, and estranged from the family. With no idea what to do with his life, he had slowly waned from killing doing the same with her men. They very rarely killed, only those that truly deserved it, but ever since that night since he cradled his mother’s broken form. He hasn’t seen the family, he only knew of Bruce’s death from the video he had sent to the family. He tensed as a body sat down beside him, curling into her jacket.
“Hello Handsome Birdie.” She said softly reaching up and caressing his cheek. “I’ve missed you.” Jason grabbed her hand holding it gently and rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb.
“I’ve missed you too Mom.” He admitted softly both turning to look out at the city in silence together. “Is he really gone?” He asked, not really wanting to know the answer. Marinette leaned against her son allowing her eyes to drift to their held hands.
“Tim-Tim says he might not be and is trying to find him. Dick, my poor bird is hurting so much he is scared to hope that Bruce isn’t dead. Then there is Damian, oh he is going to be a tough Birdie to crack.” Jason smiled softly squeezing her hand.
“Well you managed to raise me, you'll have no problem with him.” He said jokingly, causing Marinette to laugh shaking her head.
“You didn't call me ‘Father’s newest whore’ and then immediately attempt to kill me.”
“He did want?!”
Jason asked with a protective glare on his face as he turned to his mom.
“Oh hush Fire-Cracker, I’ll get through to him.”
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, The Outlaws.
Red Hood could feel her eyes on him and his two companions. The fact that they didn’t notice was both irritating yet caused a bit of pride to fill his chest for only his mom could hide so easily.
“Kori, Roy,” He called out, pulling his helmet off his mask soon following revealing Jason Todd-Wayne to the night sky. “We have a visitor.” He said, turning to look at the shadows where Lady Noir resided.
“Getting better every day aren’t you Jay-bird?” She finally announced her presence to her son’s friends. She knew the both of them Roy better than Kori, it had been Dick that introduced them. Before the split in their friendships, she hated having to comfort her bird of the loss of his older brother. Lady Noir wouldn’t let her hold it against him though, or hold it against Kori.
“Hello mom” Jason said affectionately as he walked over to Lady Noir. She smiled, dropping her transformation and allowing her son to pull her into a tight hug. Marinette reached up rubbing his cheek with her thumb. “Come to make sure, I’m not getting into too much trouble?” He asked, teasingly causing her to roll her eyes.
“No, I simply wanted to see how my son’s new team worked together. “ She combed his hair to the side gently with her fingers before grabbing his gloved hand in hers. “My birds rarely team up with others outside the family.” Jason glanced away a little nervous squeezing her hand gently.
“Well, what do you think? Of my small team here?” Marinette smiled softly glancing back at the two that had joined her son, before looking back to her son.
“I think you have found some very good friends Fire-Craker. They will care for you as you care for them.” She leaned up on her tiptoes, huffing slightly when Jason still had to lean down for her, and kissed her son’s cheek. “Be good to them and you shall have a strong team.” keep them safe. They will do the same for you, now run along my tough little bird.”
“I’m not little anymore.”
“Hush.”
“Yes Mom.”
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, Returning to the Family.
Jason stuck his hand firmly in his pockets as he stared up at the manor. Marinette and Dick had both told him he should come for the holidays. If it had been just Duck he would have blown it off, but he’d hurt his mom too much in the past to do it to her. He didn’t want to go in, his relationship with Bruce was still incredibly rocky, and he really didn’t like the Demon brat. Though somehow his mom and older brother had both become rather fond of the brat. He shook his head and squared his shoulders walking towards the door, only to turn around and take the steps back down the stairs.
“I can’t do this.” He growled out kicking the snow glaring at it frustrated. “How can this be so hard! Just walk through the damn door, say hello to Alfred hand over your coat and then immediately find mom. Give her the stupid gift, then sneak out when the others distract her.” He said to himself, but he didn’t turn around he just continued to glare at the ground, his hands shaking slightly in his jacket pockets.
“Or, just putting this out there, you could turn around, walk through the door with me and spend Christmas with your family. A family which has been nervous to see if you’ll actually come tonight.” Marinette called out from her place on the steps behind him. Her cardigan wrapped tightly around her to chase away the cold. Jason turned slightly looking at her sheepishly until he realized she didn’t have a jacket on. “Personally I prefer my idea, way better than you sneaking away from us.” Jason glared slightly walking up to her as he unzipped his jacket.
“What are you doing out here with only a cardigan? I seem to remember you always complaining that I’d get sick if I didn’t wear a jacket!” He pulled his off wrapping it around Marinette holding back a snort over it reaching her knees. Marinette glared slightly as if knowing his thought process and turned up her nose indignantly huffing. “You’ll catch your death out here without a jacket Jason! Jason don’t forget your hat! Jason gloves are not uncool they make sure your fingers don’t get frostbite!” Jason said repeating all the phrases she had used on him when he was just twelve. Marinette reached out pinching his ear slightly causing him to wince, and pout at her, though he’d never admit it.
“I am your mother, young man. I have every right to make sure you wear proper attire for winter. And apparently I should have said it more as it appears, the only thing you were wearing is your jacket.” Jason rubbed his ear after she let go grumbling to himself about annoying mothers.
“Why did you come out here? How did you know I was here?” He finally asked before wrapping his arm around her shoulders walking her towards the door. He knew his mother never did good in the cold, a side effect of being the Champion of a Ladybug Goddess. Marinette huffed, shaking her head, giving him a pointed look.
“Timmy and I sat watching you stand outside for five minutes before he suggested I came and got you.” She smiled as Alfred opened the door for them. “That and Alfred had been standing at the door for a good ten minutes and I decided that ten minutes was enough.” Jason smiled apologetically at Alfred, hugging the elderly butler.
“Hi Alfred, I missed you.” He said softly, smiling brighter when the man hugged him back.
“And I you Master Jason, now come join the family. I shall take your coat from Mistress Marinette.”
Jason raised an eyebrow looking over at his mom who shook her head fondly.
“He insists that Bruce is going to marry me one day. It’s the only bit of denial I’ve seen him in, I shan’t mention it to him however.” She said with a mischievous smile, winging at her son. “Besides Bruce’s face when he brings it up is hilarious. Now come the boys are eager to see you.” She corrected herself after Jason’s pointed look. “Fine Tim and Dick are excited to see you. Damian doesn’t want to share me and Bruce can’t emotion so he hasn’t said it but he is thinking it.”
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, Alive Again.
Jason paced his room in the manor mumbling to himself while Kori and Roy sat on his bed watching him. Today was the day, he had agreed to announce that he had survived the explosion all those years ago. They had even come up with a rather ingenious cover story on where he had been. Though that was most his replacement, the kid was wicked smart.
“I can’t do this.” He said turning to Kori and Roy with a pleading look, as he gripped his hair with his hands. “Kori, get me out of here, please.” He said softly though they could both hear the panic in his tone. Kori chuckled standing up and walking over to him. She gently pried his hands from his hair gesturing for Roy to grab the hair brush.
“X’Hal, Jason, you are overthinking this, and panicking. You can do this, I know it for you are not weak. You know you want to do this, doing this means spending more time with them.Yes, yes that’s not why you are doing this.” She said rolling her eyes when he opened his mouth to argue. She took the hair brush Roy held out with a bright smile. “Jason, this is a most joyess occasion! After today you can spend more time with your K’norfka, and Roy and I know you want to go places with her more than anything.” Jason huffed letting her brush out his hair hold his face as she tilted his head side to side.
“She is not my nanny Kori, she’s my mother.” Kori pinned him with a look as she squeezed his cheeks gently leaning forward.
“On my planet K’norfka, also means guardian. Of which she is, correct?” Jason huffed before nodding his head.
“Yes, yes, you are correct.” Kori smirked triumphantly before kissing him briefly and releasing his face. “Roy and I will be here waiting for you when you are done. Isn’t that right?” Roy nodded, wrapping an arm around her waist, smirking at his boyfriend and girlfriend.
“Oh we will be here, but I don’t know. From the look on Miss Marinette’s face we won’t see you for a while.” Roy said nodding to the door, where Marinette stood watching them. She slowly made her way over to the trio.
“Mom! I can, I can explain. Roy, Star, and I-were-uh-were really good friends-well no we are actually-well.” He was silenced by Marinette’s hand on his cheek, causing him to finally meet her eyes. Understanding and love shining brightly in her eyes, as she rubbed his cheek with her thumb, marveling at her tough little bird all grown up.
“You couldn’t have picked anyone better Jay-bird. They have proved themselves remarkably well, and have shown their love for you my sweet bird. And that’s all that a mother can ask for in life, that their baby is happy and loved.” Jason teared up as he leaned down wrapping his mom into a tight hug hiding his face in her shoulder, causing the women to giggle. Marinette softly stroked his hair resting her cheek against his head. She looked over to the two her son had chosen her smile not wavering but Roy and Kori could read her eyes. Happiness, acceptance, and a little bit of love shining in them as she silently thanked her son’s precious people.
“Now, let’s go. It’s time for Jason Todd-Wayne to enter the world again. This time though I’ll finally get to adopt you.”
———————————<3————————————
Jason Todd, A Prince Consort?
Jason stared at himself in the mirror tugging on the traditional Tamaranean clothing. He still couldn’t believe this was happening, Kori wasn’t even the Queen anymore. Yet her, Roy, and him had all been carted away to her home planet by her brother. News had spread far of her proposal to the two, and her home planet wanted to witness the marriage. Only two months after they became engaged they were getting married, and his family wasn’t even there.
“Lost in thought, Birdie.”
“Just thinking about how my mom is going to kill me-Mom?!” He turned quickly looking at his mother, dressed in a lavender purple dress, obviously of her own design, that held elements of the Tamaranean attire.
“Surprise.” She said softly with a twinkle in her eye as she walked over. “Oh look at you, my tough little bird is getting married.” She smoothed out his clothing, a tearful smile on her face. “Koriand’r had a feeling her brother would insist on this. So she made sure that the family would also be picked up, she also gave me a few different items of Tamaranean clothing, so that I could make my own clothing.” Jason smiled at the mention of his soon to be wife.
“She is amazing, her and Roy.” He whispered softly, a smile taking over his face. Marinette watched him as a single happy year fell from her face.
“Gosh, first Dickie and now you. Now I just need to have Timmy and Dami find someone that loves them unconditionally. Then I could die happily knowing my sons are loved.”
“Don’t joke about that mom, you won’t be dying for a very long time.” Jason said, grabbing her hand and squeezing it. “Besides demon brat find someone, please.”
“Jason.” Marinette said with a warning note in her tone causing Jason to grin at her. Tikki coughed, finally gaining their attention.
“Oh not again. Tikki stop out shining me will you!”
Marinette said smiling playfully at her dear friend. Tikki smiled a twinkle in her eye as she shook her head.
“No I don’t think I will Mari!” She flew up kissing Jason on the forehead just like she had done a year ago for her bug’s first bird. “I grant you and your mates Good luck and Fortune in your future together. Cherish each other always, I am proud of you, even if you’re a troublesome bird.” Marinette smiled softly looking up at her second son, her tough bird, her Fire-Craker.
“I am proud of you too Jason. You’ve grown into such a handsome young man, and have found yourself the loves of your life. That’s all a mother can ask for in life.”
“How much are my brothers going to tease me over being a Prince Consort.”
“Oh so much, that we’re thinking of jokes on the way here. A little scary watching Timmy and Dami work together, but you know Dickie, he can bring anyone together.”
Jason snorted rolling his eyes, Plagg chose this moment to show himself grinning at Jason.
“So, you’re gonna be a Trophy Husband now kid?”
“Plagg!
“Ow! Oh come on Sugar-cube! Ow!-It was a joke!”

I love my son Carl Grimes and am feeling inspired to give him a better life then a certain AMC writer who can’t write a freakin’ story to save his life!!!!!!
Requested by Anon
Prompt: Hey!I love your Imagines they are life!😍I was wondering if I could request a Carl Grimes x Y/N where the reader and Carl just go on and on about what they use to love about Christmas and everything before the Apocalypse <3
FLUFF FLUFF FLUFF FLUFF FLUFF!!!!!!
Winter fell quickly upon Alexandria the first year into residency, bringing a thick blanket of new fallen snow to cover the Safe Zone with a bitter chill to accompany it. Compared to their schedules during the scorching summer and cool falls, the streets were entirely vacant albeit the two guards who had been posted to a mandatory watch at the front gates. While many families opted to remain inside tucked in front of their fireplaces and huddling together with their loved ones for warmth, Carl Grimes was tucked on the couch opposite of his girlfriend while the two of them recanted their favorite Christmas memories.
You curled your toes inside the fuzzy neon pink socks as you glanced upward at the clock, your bleary y/e/c eyes narrowing in on the neon red numbers that marked the time. 10:46. “Why am I still awake?” You muttered as your fingers tugged on the end of your loose braid that hung over your shoulder. “Carl Grimes, I am so freaking tired. Not to mention it’s Christmas Eve. Why are you keeping me awake?”
“Because it’s Christmas Eve!! Do you know how many opportunities I was gifted to stay up the entire night in anticipation of the next morning?!” You shrieked as he rocked on his haunches and jumped on you, knocking the wind from your lungs as he was now straddling you. Your lips quirked upward in the ghost of a smile as he lightly tapped your nose with the end of his finger. “None. Now stop being a party pooper and tell me a story.”
“What kind of story do you want?” You breathed, shivering as your eyes flickered around the vacant living room before recognizing the shadow in the dining room. “Wait- Before we do anything, I am in desperate need of a fire.” Batting your eyelashes, you chucked the throwpillow into the dining room and hit Rick square in the back of the head. “Hey Ricky Dick Grimes, would you be so kind as to make your son and I a fire? He’s trying to freeze me out of the living room here!”
“Did you seriously just call me Ricky Dicky Grimes, y/n?”
A devious grin spread across your face face as Rick rubbed the back of his head. “You better believe I did.”
The former Sheriff grumbled beneath his breath as he set to making a fire in the modernized fireplace. He carefully arranged several oak logs in the center before rubbing the match on the end of the book and tossing the flame into the midst of the fireplace.
A soft smile caressed your face as the living room was lit in an amber glow, the growing flames dancing along the walls as the fire gradually grew in size. Rick muttered a nearly incoherent goodnight before you were left alone with Carl to stare at the glittering silver and red decor that adorned the Christmas tree, solely decorated by Michonne and Carol, before flickering back to the fire. “When I was a kid, my parents were one of those super sappy cliche romantic couples that everyone adored. Gushed about their kids, always kissed each other. You could see the love they felt for one another in their eyes. My brother and I used to sit in the living room and listen to the instrumental of Baby, It’s Cold Outside while they danced to it. I used to wonder if I’d ever find a love as pure as what they had.” You shyly smiled at Carl and pressed your toes into his abdomen. “Guess I did. What about you?”
Carl adjusted his Nirvana teeshirt that he’d snatched whenever Noah had passed away, shifting in his plaid pajama pants as his eyes locked with yours. “There are alot of gaps in my memories of Christmas before the Turn. I was... what, 11 the last time I had a real Christmas? I.. uh...” He poked his tongue out between his lips at the corner of his mouth, deep in concentration as he rifled backward through his memories. “I remember my moms expression the first time I tried eggnog. I thought she was gonna have an aneurysm.”
“Why would your mother have had an aneurysm when you tried eggnog?”
Carl pressed his lips together in a thin line as he scratched the back of his head. “Well, I was a rather eager child and Daddy dearest had forgotten to take his eggnog away before I could get to it.. Let’s just say I got a great taste of what vodka and eggnog together tastes like.” You forced a pillow in front of your mouth to silence your hysterical laughter as it echoed through the first floor of the house. “It is the most vile concoction I’ve ever had.”
“Worse then the time that we had to live off squirrels and possum before we got here?” You questioned. “Or that one time that Glenn and Maggie left their champagne out at the Prison and we got into the entire bottle? Or-” Carl leaned forward and pressed a single digit against your lips to halt your rambling, motioning for you to lay down in his arms as his eyes began to flutter. “Look at you! You’re tired too, you dirty liar!”
  “Am not.”
  “Are too.”
  “Not.”
  “Yeah you are.”
“I am not tired, you insolent-” You grinned widely as he huffed, purely annoyed by your banter as he slowly opened his arms to you. “Come lay down like a normal human being, y/n-”
You wiggled your eyebrows provocatively. “Awe, are we gonna cuddle in the firelight on Christmas Eve? That is like.. the most cliche of cliches, Mr. Grimes.”
“They don’t call me Mr. King of Romantic Cliches for nothing, darling.” He wiggled his fingers as you settled against him, one arm slung over his own hip while the other rested along your waist. Carl shifted to press himself into the back of the couch while you held a baited breath in anticipation for his next move. The two of you had been best friends since Atlanta and had only decided to start dating recently, but never had you been this close in proximity to him. The mere feeling of his fingers dancing along your chilled skin sent your heart into a tizzy. “Is-Is this comfortable?”
You stared into the fire and sighed deeply as he swept the blanket from the back of the couch over the both of you, encompassing you in a familiar warmth that you had not felt since you’d lived at the Prison. When Rick Grimes and his group had settled into the concrete walls of C-Block, you all had learned how to call it home. And now for the first time in months, here you were safely enveloped in the arms of the boy you adored; Hidden away from the bitter cold and snowflakes that dusted the rich Virginian grounds of Alexandria Safe Zone. You were safe. You were warm. And most importantly, you were home.
A sleepy smile caressed your face as you nuzzled into his touch, loosely lacing your fingers with his own as you took in the vivid sight of dazzling silver and red, a brilliant contrast to the white lights that were spread evenly along the top of the tree before they reached the top - where an angel stood proudly with his tawny gold wings outstretched and hands wrapped around the heavenly trumpet. “I’ve never felt more at home in my entire life, Carl.” You whispered. “I can’t wait to spend our first Christmas together.”
He leaned inward and brushed his lips against the spot just beneath your ear, nearly succumbing to the throws of deep sleep.
  “It’s going to be monumental.”
Please let me know what you think! Hoping to release all of my TWD fanfic by tomorrow!

[UnderOcean] [Character's settings][Part 3] Sans -A skeleton who lives in Coral Village. His collar is made by freshwater and can change different shapes by itself. -Seems more mature and tells stories and tales about ocean instead of telling puns. However, because of the proficient skill he has in language, he hurts his younger brother. -Sometimes he would like to ride tiger sharks instead of walking but they usually disobey him. So that most of the time he is dragged by the sharks. -The water balls cover his attacking bones and his Gaster Blaster is the skull of a shark. He can control the blaster to shoot while he snapping his finger. (I mean snapping his phalanges) His judgement eye has two colours, the top half is light blue and the bottom half is yellow. The sparking fire glows in his judgement eye is gradual changed by light blue and yellow. -He always sleeps in his shell sentry pavilion and this cause he does not know the time when he is closed by the closing shell. -The fart pad turns into cuttlefish. -He enjoys eating seaweeds. -Compares to human, he loves his younger brother more. He feels shameful for hurting his brother and wants to make up this mistake. He has a strong hostility to humankind and always be dicky to them. He even be dicky to other Sanses and likes to ridicule and irony. -He insists on following the mother of ocean. Although he thinks the Atlantis is just a tale, he is still believes the Black Sea is exist by other monster’s rumors. To tell the truth, the Black Sea does not even exist for sure. Papyrus -A tall skeleton who lives in Coral Village. He always shows his happy smile to all other monsters. His collar is also made by freshwater. -He convinced the Atlantis is truly exist by hearing Sans’s stories when he was a baby bone. He had a big dream about going there and finally finding about that mysterious town at that time. He was no longer liked Sans’s ocean tales when Sans told him the Atlantis was just a legend. -He has a Batoidea as his pet. The reason why he likes riding on its back for patrolling everywhere is, he thinks the expression on Batoidea’s ventral surface is cute. -He puts a transparent helmet on his skull and pretends it to be a Oxygen helmet, though it is unnecessary for him to breathe. -He is good at cooking kelps but probably because of the sea. His food is too salty for eating. -No matter what or how Sans did any bad things to him, he is still loves his elder brother. -He always pays his responsibility for saving Sans from the closing shells. He has no idea whether how much lazy his brother has got, he thinks the indulgence is the best choice for him to deal with it.

Made in Chelsea - Series 13 Episode 10
Interactive Map
1. Ormer, 7-12 Half Moon Street - Victoria and Mark Francis celebrate Mark Francis' upcoming launch of his menswear line. Mark Francis will not be hiring any models - it's just so common. They will, however, solicit the services of JP to be a chiseled manikin.
2. Megan’s, 571 King’s Road - Sam and Olivia go for drinks with Harry and Daisy. Olivia is still bitter from the treatment she's received from Frankie, and Daisy has photographic evidence of Jamie snogging someone other than Frankie. Allegedly they were not snogging, and any physical contact was purely platonic. All who see the photos seriously doubt Jamie's denial.
3. Peggy Porschen Cakes, 116 Ebury Street - Sam Prince takes Toff on a date to eat cake. Despite the age difference, Toff is maybe a little smitten.
4. Eelbrook, Eel Brook Common - Binky, Louise, Stephanie, and JP go out for brunch. Mark Francis rings to request JP's services as a model. For JP it's akin to being called upon by HRH, the Queen. Binky is unsure how the co-parenting can work if JP isn't living with her and baby.
5. Dickie Fitz, 48 Newman Street - Frankie meets Daisy to hear to extent of Jamie's transgression at the club. Daisy's report is very damning. Jamie turns up to defend himself, swearing up and down that it did not happen the way Daisy says it did. Frankie doesn't know what to think, and asks for time to think.
6. Cad & the Dandy, 13 Savile Row - Olivia helps to style Julius for the vintage car show. Liv can't believe that Frankie is still with Jamie. Julius is still not sure if he can let Ella fully into his life.
7. Hanger SW6, 461 North End Road - Sam and Alex attempt to lure Jamie out for a pint to cheer him up. Jamie declines as he's still gutted that no one believes his innocence. Alex suggests that Jamie is acting out because he wants Frankie to  be the one to end the relationship.
8. M Bar 48-51 Leadenhall Market - Olivia meets with Frankie to discuss Jamie's recent behaviour. Olivia points out that Jamie is quite manipulative, and that Frankie wants to believe the best of him.
9. Belair House, Gallery Road - Everyone turns up to the vintage car show in their finest duds. Ella comes right out with it and asks Julius if he trusts her. Julius refuses to give Ella a direct answer. Frankie calls Daisy over to continue to toss kindling on the fire of Jamie's infidelity. It seems as though Frankie has decided to chuck him, but if you listen to Jamie's podcast, then you know that's not true. Binky assures JP that he should feel no real pressure to move in with her and baby. Julius apologizes for leaving Ella uncertain of his affection for her, and finally asks her to be his girl friend. Jamie appears to be truly devastated that he cannot be the man that Frankie needs him to be.

BatMom- Dick Grayson
This is the beginning of a five part series, starting with Richard Grayson.
Masterlist
Part 1[Here]
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Dick Grayson, Her First Bird.
Marinette sighed as she stepped out of her car thanking her driver as he pulled her luggage out of the trunk. She turned looking up at the mansion taking in the appearance and remembering how he described it all those years ago. When Marinette first got to know Bruce Wayne, before he broke her heart. Although she couldn’t place her blame on him, after all Bruce wasn’t looking for love. No, he was looking for revenge and Marinette was looking for love in the wrong place. They were two different people and while Bruce did love her, he didn’t love her. Marinette knew that, and she accepted that while it took sometime, she moved on. But now she was back after what she would call a cry for help, but Bruce would call a request for assistance. Although he would never really admit that he asked for help.
She walked up to the door and knocked politely thinking of the person who would most likely answer. Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce’s honorary father, and technical butler. If the man was anything like Bruce described him he’d answer the door.
“Hello?” Alfred greeted open the door taking in Marinette’s stylish yet obviously comfy clothing. “Ah, you must be Miss Marinette, Master Bruce has told me much about you. You’re here to help him with Young Master Richard.” Marinette laughed softly pushing her sunglasses up allowing her to see her twinkling blue bell eyes.
“Now Mister Pennyworth, you and I both know Bruce doesn’t ask for help. He implies that he needs it, but refuses to say the word. Then if you say it he will deny ever needing it.” Alfred let his lips twitch as he grabbed Marinette’s bags. Gesturing for her to enter the manor.
“Miss Marinette, I think I am going to enjoy having you around.”
Marinette walked calmly down the hall to Richard’s room, she paused taking a deep breath knocking gently on the door. “Richard may I come in?” She was silent, an understanding smile covering her face. She sat down by the door, side sitting as she slipped her shoes off. “Very well, I will not come in without your permission. However I simply cannot sit out here in silence, that’s much too boring and I abhor silence! Did you know turkeys were once worshipped as Gods? The Mayan people saw them as vessels of the Gods, so much so that they domesticated turkeys to have roles in religious rites. Sounds absolutely silly right? Though I can’t fault them as it is their beliefs, and they had not actually met Gods unlike me.” Marinette smiled as she heard another body sit down on the other side of the door. “In fact I believe they’d be surprised at how unbelievably silly they are! As well as tiny, but don’t let that trick you, even without their chosen human they pack a nasty punch. They are also very protective of those they call their own. Of course not many know that, very few have been blessed to be chosens, and unfortunately quite a few have abused the power. I fear that I may one day abuse it myself. Though my little Goddess always tells me it’s not possible.” The door creaked open slightly and one breathtakingly blue eye peered out at her.
“You’re a chosen?” He asked softly, causing Marinette to smile brightly, as she patted the spot right next to her.
“I am actually the Guardian of them, Tikki is my patron and I her champion. She is the Goddess of Creation and Good Luck, her opposite is Plagg God of Destruction and Bad Luck. Would you like to meet her?” Dick Grayson was quick to open his door and sit next to Marinette his eyes sparkling for the first time in a long time.”Tikki, come out and say hello.”
“Hello there.” Tikki said softly, flying around the young boy’s head giggling. “I’m Tikki and this is my chosen Marinette!”
“Hi I’m Richard Grayson, but I prefer Dick.”
“Nice to meet you Dick.”
“Golly Tikki! It’s nice to meet you too, and you Miss Marinette!”

Dick Grayson, After the Fight.
Lady Noir slipped into the tower, careful not to let her power flare and alert the half demon her dear Robin had befriended. She made her way to the kitchen and began unpacking the groceries she had bought, leaving the Chinese take out on the counter. She didn’t even pause when the doors slid open revealing Robin. Who stared at her unimpressed, arms crossed and a slight glare in place. “I suggest you drop that glare Birdie, or else I shall not give you the Chinese I brought. Or the chocolate milk, I know it is still your favorite.” She turned to him with a smirk flipping her braid over her shoulder as she took in her baby bird.
“Did he make you come here?” He said with no emotion in his voice, but Lady Noir could hear the silent plead. The begging for her to say that Batman hadn’t sent her to reprimand his wayward bird. Lady Noir snorted as she unboxed the take out pulling out her favorite and breaking apart her chopsticks.
“Nonsense, B can’t make me do everything for him. This is something he needs to fix himself.” She said before sitting down on the stool posture as elegant as ever. She calmly ate her Chow mein, waiting for her first bird to come to her. Robin glanced out the window before slowly making his way over sitting across from her at the breakfast bar. “Can’t a cat want to see her favorite bird?” She questioned looking at her noodles with an amused smile as Robin snorted.
“Considering you’re using Plagg instead of Tikki I am a little more worried.” Robin said surveying the hero in front of him, watching as her smile wavered. He hated when her smile waved; she had one of the most beautiful smiles he ever saw. He had always wanted to smile as brightly as she did, and never believed her when she said he already out did her. However since the split between him and Batman. Robin had rarely smiled. “Why is Lady Noir here and not Ladybug?” He questioned looking into her eyes, blue hidden by a green protection. Lady Noir placed her chopsticks down before reaching a shaking hand out to his cheek stopping short.
“Plagg, claws in.” She called softly letting the transformation drop before softly caressing his cheek, moving her other hand up to hold his face gently. Tilting it side to side to assure there were no injuries. “You know Tikki, if she came she’d refuse to leave without you.” Marinette said as her thumb gently brushed the bottom of Robin’s mask. “May I?” She asked softly, but Robin could see the desperation in her blue bell eyes. He grabbed her wrist gently squeezing it, not liking when her eyes closed in resignation. He panicked when she began pulling her hands away, and gently pulled them back to his face. Nodding as he enjoyed the familiar warmth. Marinette gave him a gentle smile as she removed the mask, revealing her Dickie Grayson almost all groan up. “There’s those beautiful blue eyes.” She said softly as a few tears fell from her own. “I’m sorry to intrude Dickie, but after-after what happened last month-I just-I wanted to-I had to see you. I had to see you in person myself. I need to make sure you are okay. Oh baby bird, when I saw you on the news frozen and unable to defend yourself. At the mercy of the Brotherhood of Evil, I-I was terrified.” Dick squeezed her hand gently before standing up and moving to the other side of the breakfast bar. He dragged her into his arms hugging her tightly wrapping his cape around them as best he could.
“I wasn’t scared.” He admitted softly as she cried on his shoulder. “They didn’t scare me, because I knew that no matter what. I knew that you’d come for me, I don’t know about Bruce anymore, but I knew you’d always come for me.”

Dick Grayson, Ladybug v.s. Tarantula.
Ladybug landed gracefully on the build and launched herself at Tarantula tackling the girl off Nightwing. She gripped the girl by her throat slamming her head against the concrete with an almost inhuman growl. Straddling the girls hips asuring no chance of escape before viciously rain punches down on her.
“How. Dare. You.” She growled stopping after the fifth punch, snapping out and grabbing the arm Tarantula tried to hit her with. She glared before breaking the girl's wrist in her grip. “How dare you lay your hands on my bird. How dare you attempt to rape him!” She growled out standing up and dragged the girl up by her ponytail. “Kaalki, open a portal.” She dragged the girl to the portal ignoring her attempts to get away.
“I don’t kill, in that department you are unlucky. You see, I’m going to send you somewhere no one knows about. You will never see another human being for the rest of your life. Have fun little girl, for you shall never hurt another again.” Ladybug growled out the fire in her eyes scaring Catalina.
“No please! No I’m sorry, forgive me!” She cried out but was ignored as Ladybug threw her through the portal.
“Close it Kaalki.” She said both her and the God ignoring the girls cries. “I don’t not forgive rapists.” She turned back to her blue bird hurrying over and pulling the sobbing young man into her arms. Cradling and rocking him slowly, he wrapped his arms around her waist crying into her shoulder. “I got you baby bird, let it out. I’m here now, I’m here you’re safe. I’ve got you I’m right here.” She whispered softly, running her fingers through his hair. “I’ve got you.” She kissed his temple softly.
———————————<3————————————
Dick Grayson, Batman’s Cowl.
She leaned against the clock tower watching Batman on his first patrol with his Robin. A frown on her face as she watched them feeling older than ever when she never heard the familiar cackle. No, there would be no cackles in Gotham for a long while. She watched as the Batmoblie rolled into an alleyway, and the duo jumped down. She looked up at the sky begging herself not to cry, at the cruelty of life. Her blue bird was never meant for the cowl but there was nothing she could do. Her bird was anything if not stubborn, he had made his decision and she would not be mad like the League was. No, she would support him and her newest bird. No matter how violent he was towards her. She’d be there every step of the way to make sure the cowl didn’t darken her Birdie.
———————————<3————————————
Dick Grayson, Court of Owls.
Lady Noir glared down at the man below her as her combined powers from Tikki and Plagg rippled.
“The Gray Son belongs to the Court.” William Cobb said to her emotionlessly from where he stood above her bird. Nightwing-no his mask was gone, that was her Richard, her Dickie staring up at her with those terrified blue eyes.
“You’re wrong he belongs to no one but himself.” She said firmly, taking in her bird’s unfortunately great grandfather. “And if I have to beat that into you to prove it, so be it. No one, especially not blood lays a hand on my bird and gets away with it.” She flung her yo-yo out wrapping it around his wrist and yanking him forward and off balance. Before propeling herself forward with her baton. Beginning a dangerous dance of which she refused to lose.
“Hey baby bird.” She said softly, hiding her pain as her transformation dropped. She sank to her knees pulling his head into her lap gently playing with his hair. “I’ve got you.” Dick sobbed softly into her lap letting his emotions run freely. Coming to terms with the fact that Haley’s Circus wasn’t his home, they were simply grooming him to be a killer. Taking comfort in his one constant since the loss of his parents. His heart breaking even more over the fact that they had planned to hand him over to them. He knew Marinette would never, she’d never do that to him.
———————————<3————————————
Dick Grayson, Death of her Eldest.
Marinette sat despondent as she started at the casket in front of her. Tears falling down her face hidden by a black veil. Her eldest was gone, she’d lost another child. She couldn’t protect another one of her boys, how many would she fail. Tikki and Plagg sat on her shoulders hidden by her black graying hair and her veil. A sob broke from her as she brought one hand up to her face. Attention landing on the mourning mother who finally broke since the news. Since her first baby bird died and she wasn’t there, just like she wasn’t there for her Jay-bird. Life was cruel, so cruel to take two of her birds from her. People turned away from the mother allowing her to let her grief out, they all knew it was a terrible fate. To outlive your children, she had no idea of the three boys wishing to comfort her. Yet fearing they’d make it worse.

Dick Grayson Becomes Ric Grayson.
Yes she had been deeply upset to find out her eldest had faked his death. Then she had been pissed at Bruce for telling her Baby bird the family would know. She resolved to spend as much time as she could with her birds. She never thought it would backfire like this, never thought she’d watch her son get shot in the head. Yet here she was by his bedside in Gotham Advance Medical Hospital. She had barely left his side since, she didn’t want to lose her son again. So every day she sat there holding his hand and reading books out loud to him. They day those beautiful blues opened though had not been happy, for what mother would be happy when the rule son asks who they are. It was weeks later that she finally visited again, breaking into ‘Ric’s’ apartment. “Shit, pulling stuff like this will get ya shot lady.” Rick grumbled looking at the unfamiliar woman with graying black hair.
“Please you wouldn’t shoot me, even now guns make you uncomfortable.” Marinette states calling him out and causing the man to tense. “I’m not here to fight, I just could leave without saying goodbye please allow me that.” She took his silence as a go ahead, still not turning around to look at him. “The day I realized I saw you as my son was amazing yet heartbreaking. I loved you so much, you were my boy yet I knew I would never be your mother. I watched you grow into such an amazing and beautiful young man, and now I’ve lost you again. Only this time you may never remember me.” She stood up and turned to Ric not hiding her tears as she cradled his face. “I will always love you.” She said softly kissing his forehead before stepping back and walking past him closing the door behind her as she left. Leaving Ric feeling as if someone important had just left.

Dick Grayson, Remembrance.
“Not Ric.” He said softly, staring at the ground before slamming his foot down and breaking the crystal. “Dick” He said, turning to Barbara-Batgirl, turning to Batgirl and Beatrice smiling softly. “It’s Dick and I need to find my mom. I need to apologize to her as soon as possible.” Batman landed besides Batgirl the rest of the bat family following. “Let’s hurry up and take care of Joker. I need to see mom.”
Dick walked through the door to Marinette’s penthouse, holding take out from her favorite Chinese place. “Is that you Jay-bird? Did you guys take care of the Joker? I’m sorry I couldn’t help. I wish I never sprained my ankle.” He heard her sigh softly from the couch as she hadn’t turned around yet. “Jason? Baby bird don’t ignore me.” She called out slightly annoyed but he could hear the underlined affection. “Jason Todd-Wayne I swear.” She turned on the couch gasping when her eyes met his eyes. “Hi mom, I’m home.” He said softly rubbing the back of his head.
“Oh baby bird, oh my boy!” She cried out trying to stand as she started crying. She limped  around the couch, causing him to rush towards her wrapping his arms around her waist.
“Hey mom, sorry for hurting you.”
“Oh my baby bird, I’m so happy.”

Dick Grayson, his Wedding day.
She stood by the door watching him adjust his tie as he looked in the mirror just making it worse. “Honestly Dickie, are you ever going to get a tie right?” She teased walking over and slowly fixing it. She brushed it down gently, her eyes tearing up when she spotted the bluebells in his breast pocket. “Birdie.” She said softly reaching up with her right hand and cupping his cheek gently. “I am so proud of you.” She whispered as a tear slid down her face. “You’ve grown so much and now you’re marrying a beautiful woman that loves you so much.” Dick gently wiped the tear off her cheek.
“Don’t cry. I hate when you cry, it makes me feel guilty.” He said causing Marinette to snort as she shook her head. Tikki flew out from her hiding place in Marinette’s clutch doing a circle around Dick. “Hello Tikki, I’ve missed you.” Tikki smiled softly at the man standing in front of her.
“And I you Young Grayson, if I may I wish to give you my wedding gift now.” She flew up kissing his forehead gently giggling as her power rippled around him. “Young Grayson, I grant you and your chosen mate Good Luck and Fortune in your future together.” Dick looked at her in surprise while Marinette shook her head looking at her Patron.
“You always have to outdo me.”

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 27th January 2019
FEATURED SONG #3 – “Happy Together” by Weezer
This isn’t necessarily being pushed as a single but I don’t care it was released a week or two back and I adore it so I’m covering it briefly on this week’s Featured Song segment. Now, ‘90s alt-rock act Weezer have had somewhat of a resurgence with their meme-fuelled cover of Toto’s “Africa”, which actually acted as the lead single for their surprise Teal Album, which dropped on January 23rd, to mixed reviews, but I personally loved it, and their cover of the Turtles’ “Happy Together” is my personal favourite of the 10 tracks presented. It’s very similar to the original, that is true, and yeah, they stick to the formula and do not escape their comfort zone, but do you need to? This is the most sincere I’ve heard Rivers Cuomo since Pinkerton but instead of whining like his old stuff, he seems genuinely content, and that’s what I love about this song, because it’s just Rivers Cuomo expressing his love for either his significant other or how I interpreted it, his job as a musician, because although they’ve had ups and downs in their career to the point where they’ve had to use Kickstarter to even record, release and promote one of their albums, Rivers Cuomo sticks to his craft and loves music so much that he’d be fit for all his life just doing what he loves, and I appreciate that. This song is so glittery and purely joyful, and I love it. Check it out, and maybe the Teal Album if you’re into this.
Alright, I’m focusing on my Top 15 Best Hit Songs of 2018 right now, so let’s make this as quick as possible.
Top 10
Yeah, we have a #1 debut, and our first in the 2019 chart year, and it’s Ariana Grande with “7 rings”, as it shatters records, debuting at the top in America, becoming her second in such a short time as “thank u, next” also debuted at its peak of #1 two or so months ago. It’s Ariana Grande’s 17th Top 40 hit in the UK and her fourth #1. We’ll talk about it later.
Otherwise, eh, nothing really happened. “Sweet but Psycho” by Ava Max is down a spot to number-two.
“Dancing with a Stranger” by Sam Smith and Normani on the other hand is up a space to number-three.
Post Malone’s “Wow.” is also down a single position to number-four.
This puts it right near Calvin Harris and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man entering the top five with “Giant”, a two-spot increase from last week to number-five.
Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus’ “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” struggled down four positions this week to number-six.
Post Malone’s other top 10 hit, “Sunflower”, with Swae Lee, from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is also down two spots to number-seven.
Ariana Grande’s last #1, “thank u, next”, is down two spots to number-eight.
The only notable switch-up outside of the #1 today is the 25-spot boost for Russ’ “Gun Lean”, which has somehow made its way to number-nine. It’s not the American rapper, it’s the British rapper who calls himself “Russ splash” on Spotify but otherwise it’s just Russ? I’m not sure how to separate them, to be honest. Congratulations for his first top 10 hit, but, I mean, it’s awful.
Finally, at #10, down two spots from last week is “Play” by Jax Jones and Years & Years.
Climbers
“Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi is up a whopping sixteen spaces up to #13, although I don’t see the appeal, becoming his first top 20 hit. “Undecided” by Lil Dicky is back five spaces up to #16... and that’s it.
Fallers
We have a couple more of these, though. “Lost in the Fire” by Gesaffelstein featuring the Weeknd is down six off the debut to #15, both “18HUNNA” by Headie One and Dave and “Hold My Girl” by George Ezra are down 10 spaces to #21 and #22 respectively, whilst right next to them are two consecutive six-spot fallers, those being “Ruin My Life” by Zara Larsson and “Baby Shark” by Pinkfong at #23 and #24. “Baby” by Clean Bandit, Marina and Luis Fonsi is down five to #28, next to “Hello My Love” by Westlife, plummeting down sixteen spaces to #29, which is also next to another six-spot faller, “Thursday” by Jess Glynne at #30. Speaking of six-space fallers, “One Kiss” by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa is at #32, and “Mo Bamba” by Sheck Wes is down five to #33. Other than that, we have two eight-space falls at the tail-end of the chart, with “Promises” by Sam Smith and Calvin Harris at #38, and “This is Me” by Keala Settle and the Greatest Showman Ensemble at #39.
Dropouts
“Longshot” by Catfish and the Bottlemen is out from #25, “Leave a Light On” by Tom Walker is out from #37, “Eastside” by benny blanco featuring Halsey and Khalid is out from #39, “Woman Like Me” by Little Mix featuring Nicki Minaj is out from #40 and “A Million Dreams” by P!NK is out from #35.
Returning Entries
“2002” by Anne-Marie is back at #40 but what amazes me is the sudden return for “Close to Me” by Ellie Goulding, Diplo and Swae Lee at #25, up 32 spaces from its position in the top 100. Did they release an album or something? I just don’t know what made it suddenly increase this high. Other than that, nothing interesting here, let’s get to the new arrivals.
NEW ARRIVALS
#27 – “Psych Out!” – AJ Tracey
I’ve heard one or two songs from AJ Tracey and he just does not impress me or even come off as interesting. Apparently, he’s releasing an album soon, which is okay, but as a buzz single, does this entice me at all? I mean, yeah, to an extent, because it starts with a minimalistic bubbling synth melody that twinkles for a while until AJ Tracey, self-proclaimed melodic jukebox, sings over the beat as the kicks kick in, and slowly but surely, the skittering trap percussion hits and, yeah, I’m bored. The hook is catchy and in all honesty pretty great, AJ Tracey’s not a bad singer, but as his third top 40 hit, this is just such a re-tread of what he’s already done, and I don’t care about anything he has to say – because he doesn’t have anything to say, he’s just a disposable UK rapper who happened to latch onto a decent chorus and bam, you get a hit. This makes me feel bad for criticising American trap. Next.
#11 – “Don’t Call Me Up” – Mabel
Mabel isn’t really more interesting either – delightful – but she’s a British R&B singer who I think has a great voice and a knack for melodies, at least her producers and writers do, because all of her songs so far have been incredibly catchy, especially that “Fine Line” track with Not3s I reviewed nearly a year ago now. I’ve heard snippets of this one, and it seems like typical Mabel fare, except her performance is slightly sub-par and we’ve got some cheaper, yet almost vintage 80s-sounding string synths. The chorus is such an abrupt shift as that pounding bass comes in with the dancehall-infused drum beat and what sounds like a marimba, again, I’m not entirely sure, but I know it sounds pretty great, and I like how Mabel can pump out hits like this consistently (this being her fifth Top 40). This is pretty fun – pretty simple, conventional and essentially just more of the same, but like I said with the Featured Song above, it doesn’t need to be to be a fun dance song, and that’s exactly what this is. Mabel doesn’t really care about the narrative or even her performance at times, but she rides this beat insanely well with her smooth, sultry and dare I say proudly British voice, so, yeah, I’m happy with this, and I can see it peaking in the top 10 somewhere.
#1 – “7 rings” – Ariana Grande
So, I skimmed this Pitchfork piece about the song being so out-of-character for Grande considering how most of the roll-out for her album thank u, next has been about being relatable and almost sympathetic for Ariana Grande with all her recent struggles, and that this is some kind of break from that character, although I think that’s on purpose as it shows how she covers her issues and struggles with materialistic items (even though she doesn’t, and is clearly okay with making her grievances public in interviews and such). I do see how this can be a shattering of the facade though, similarly to “I Might Need Security” by Chance the Rapper last year, but there’s one issue with that comparison: the Chance song was good. The Chance song didn’t have a lazy, hackneyed interpolation of “My Favourite Things”. The Chance song maybe had a lightweight beat but there was a sample to add some soulfulness to it and it wasn’t just a lightweight trap “banger” that proves nothing other than the fact that this is only shameless genre-hopping for the sake of trend-following and not any artistic purpose now. Chance’s flow was calm, relaxed and potentially you could see it as lazy, but at least his flows were, you know, original, or at least not blatantly jacked from other rappers such as Soulja Boy of all people, who, by the way, has an absolute mess of a Discord server, find an invite to that at some time. Eh, I can’t be too mad at this because Grande is a great singer and the third verse has an okay flow, but this is way too stiff. Pass.
Conclusion
Best of the Week goes to Mabel for “Don’t Call Me Up” but I still do feel that’s unwarranted because it isn’t entirely great. Worst of the Week goes to AJ Tracey for “Psych Out!”, and, yeah, that’s it for this week. See you on Sunday!
