Week 5 New Development Cycle

This week we wrapped up our development of the platformer game and moved onto an asteroids (SHMUP) clone with a similar approach to the one taken with the platformer as we will develop it slowly over the next few weeks.

Platformer Post Mortem

Rooftop Shinobi was created with the goal in mind of creating a fun and engaging platformer experience that could be played however the player would like to. I believed that I could have put a lot more effort into the game state when it came to playtesting, as during the play testing I only had a small section of the game in addition to only 2 of the ideated mechanics working in game. If I was to continue development on the game I would work on adding in place holders for mechanics whilst I decide how to animate them later. This would help shift my focus more towards the game's mechanics being refined before the art style. In addition I would also add a more stable menu system with options for potential volume controls and the in game controls themselves. In future by preparing myself for future play testing better I believe I would be able to create a better final product.

Dive to Survive

Dive to Survive is a top down SHMUP that is based down in the depths of the Atlantic ocean. You are stranded underwater with a limited oxygen supply as you must fight off the ocean creatures that seek to keep you down there. You must defeat the enemies and collect oxygen bubbles in order to survive down in the depths. Aimed towards people who like the double challenge of combat and time based survival. You must keep focused not only on your surroundings but your oxygen levels too.

Controls

WASD/ARROW KEYS to move around the scene

Mouse to aim

M1 to fire

M2 alt fire?

E for interact

3 Unique selling points

Underwater theme that incorporates two elements to survival

“Free” esc environment with small interactions to potentially get more oxygen

The game would be a one shot, i.e. only one life per playthrough

This week I also spent time organizing my events screen by tidying it up and creating sections for each part of the project

As I laid in bed I reflected on why I enjoy free diving. It occurred to me that it’s not just about the diving. When you dive you have good people around you. People who have common goals, similar interests and passions. Divers often meet each other on the same level. Conservation, proper animal led interactions, breath hold and equalization techniques.... bubble rings 🤪 When I take a dive trip I am surrounded with incredible people who crave adventure as much as I do. Easy, go with the flow people. I enjoy diving because it’s always an adventure, and usually we all have our own little experience within the same dive trip that’s unique to us.
