bad svsss fanfic/au idea: random marriage/guidance counselor transmigrates into PIDW, sees the absolute mess of lord luo bingge and his harem, goes "jesus fucking christ", and makes bank.
and like. they're probably not even that good of a counselor. it's just that people lack any sense when it comes to bingge, and since he's the emperor, that means pretty much everyone. also because therapy doesn't exist. i'll give them some credit though, whatever they hell they're doing works.
now, while sqq and sqh are having a grand ol' time in SVSSS with their husbands, this random, average counselor has to deal with being in the care of lord luo bingge. no wife beam. no anything. all they have is some basic empathy and common sense people just tend to lack in here for some reason.
it's even worse considering the fact that they've arrived after luo bingge completed his plan and became the hailed demon emperor. now, while they've never full on read the entire thing, they've heard enough from a close friend who has kept up with it to know the main character is the literal embodiment of the cycle of abuse and heavy unresolved issues. like, it got to the point where they started to unironically use luo bingge as an example of how to not deal with conflicts and trauma.
really, how could people like bingge? seriously, it's just another edge lord main character with way too many glamorized issues and abuse. red flag! (hey, who the hell is peerless cucumber and why does he keep defending binghe? lord, have mercy on these impressionable young men...)
so, after being kidnapped taken in by bingge and his wives after the bunch claimed that they were a "wise man" or whatever (all they did was offer some basic relationship advice to some poor woman, who turned out to be ning yingying, who told the other wives, and it just spiraled from there), they were deemed "special" and given their personal office and a room! hey, better than being on the streets in this god forsaken hentai-ish world, i guess.
quickly, a routine was established. one that, especially, consisted of luo bingge outright ignoring them. which, they weren't complaining about!
wake up, eat, meet with multiple of the wives, spend their hard earned money on delicious delicacies, meet with more wives, sleep, repeat. the most interaction they had with the demon emperor was him ordering them around, but even then, that was uncommon. it was, surprisingly, easy to fall into the rhythm of this undoubtedly odd life. you're upset that lord luo hasn't spent much time with you? maybe you can ask! the other wives are being annoying? remove yourself from the situation. you're upset that lord luo has so many other wives? oohhh... yeah. uhm.
luo binghe only tolerated them, they knew that. and they're sure that, if not for multiple of his wives insisting on keeping them, they'd be dead for even daring to be so "intimate" with them. a little bit of a shock, if they do say so themself. like, insecure much (something that they'll probably never get used to is the fact that bingge built an entire little village for his wives, though)?
but that's not the most shocking thing, oh, no.
it's this.
"i- i tried.. i tried to take the.. hiic-- other.. other shizun w-with me.." lord luo binghe, the powerful, almighty demon emperor, trembles and sobs. "b-but he! he wanted to-- s-stay with that.. stupid, inferior version of my- hic- self.."
despite the mountain of gold they're getting paid in, is it really enough to deal with this? probably not. will they get killed for witnessing luo binghe's vulnerability? perhaps. is he a dictator, the embodiment of the cycle of abuse, and a crazily vengeful bastard? definitely.
"it's-- s' not.." his voice breaks. something else inside of them probably does, too. "..n-not, hiic- fair."
should they feel bad? they shouldn't. he's hurt much too many people. isn't it a little late? can he even be redeemed? because, they are absolutely not here to try and "fix" him.
and yet.
"can you breathe, lord luo? deep breaths, don't focus on anything else but me, okay? i'll do it with you too. can you do that for me? there, there. you're doing a very good job, do you know that? here, when i'm upset, sometimes i like to do something called, '5-4-3-2-1'. i promise it'll help, binghe. would you like for me to do this one with you too?"
they can't help but think about a small, lonely boy on qing jing peak.
. . .
after that, bingbing slowly starts to come around and develop an actual bond! cool!! he just,,, can't believe only his wives were granted the "wisdom". how foolish was he?
"i know i'm only a mere human, but i can tell that lord luo is... masking things. you can put that away for now, okay? i promise, everything you say here will be confidential information, and it'll never leak... no no there's no enemy spies here-"
"i'm not even going to question this. you go back there right now and deal with it yourself if you cannot respect me or the other clients. aka, your wives."
"no, it's not stupid. this is how people help themself, and it's okay if you want to do it. as long as it doesn't hurt you or anybody. it helps, and that's all that matters."
"oh? one of your wife confronted to you about it? i'm glad to hear that, she's doing well, i see. i'm also happy that you're listening too, really."
"yes, and when something like that happens, you--- no- don't pull out xin mo now. what did we say about that? good job."
"here, can i touch your hands, binghe? there we go. when you're unsteady, you feel the need to pick at your skin, correct? well, let's try a few different things to keep those hands busy! it must be quite stressful being an emperor. how about we start with crocheting! it's quite popular back at my hometown."
"your mother sounds like a wonderful woman, lord luo. hey, how about you take a small break and visit her, okay? you want me to come with you? of course, it'd be an honor."
and thus, the story of the poor transmigrator counselor continues on with luo bingge added to their schedule!! this could be read as romantic or platonic lol. but i was thinking of this as luo bingge obtaining his first actual friend. it takes a long while due to bingge's... bingge-ness, but eventually it all works out lmao

Go Home
Another twitter thread
So I've been thinking of a #Moshang AU all day about SQH actually pressing the 'go home button' but when he returns to the modern world MBJ can still hear him when he calls, he just can't go there.
So while dealing with LGJ he gets thrown across the clearing, he calls for MBJ but the system decides this is the most convenient time to pop up and in his desperate flailing one of his hands lands on the 'go home' button.
MBJ shows up to find his uncle cursing empty air, and he demands to know where SQH went.
"Vanished into thin air." A feat not even a heavenly demon could achieve without aid. Even Mobei Jun's powers leave a trail of shadow and cold.
Mobei Jun nearly kills LGJ, his uncle is covered in SQHs blood, but there is no body to be found. Mobei Jun had heard him call, and he tears the clearing apart looking for his cultivator but there is no sign of the man. He is distraught, he is devastated, he is alone.
Meanwhile Shang Qinghua wakes up in the modern world feeling like he just licked a battery in a pile of cold noodle juice and a small fire from his laptop plugin burning up his wall.
He feels the years of An Ding training surge through him as he leaps to his feet and finds the small fire extinguisher in his cupboard and he puts the fire out, then the enormity of what just happened starts to sink in
"My king what have I done?"
He may have spent his first night sobbing MBJs name into his pillow, he wants to chalk it all up to a dream but he can't.
He's been writing that damn novel for years and never had a dream like that.
He's forced to return to a life he'd almost forgotten, he couldn't even remember what month it was let alone his passwords. Thank god he finished PIDW he wouldn't be able to write another word for that disaster.
He doesn't even know how to go back to it, his time in his own book feels like a dream but then he's looking at sales spreadsheets from his novel and he feels like he's back on An Ding.
Luckily finishing it meant physical copies were being published giving him a financial buffer.
He needed a new PC and a new apartment first, he started job hunting because he just wasn't sure if he could still write, not after everything.
He'd also developed a bit of a habit of calling out for MBJ when anything went wrong.
If he missed the bus?
"I was too slow my King."
He spilled his noodles (on a table far away from his new laptop)
"My King I'm such a Klutz"
Someone tried to bully him at his new office job?
"Save me from spreadsheets my King!"
Mobei Jun is SUFF ER ING.
At first he thought he was hearing things. The call was distant, Shang Qinghua had left him and he was hallucinating.
But it happened again, and again and finally he tried to follow it teleporting to SQH only to end up in the middle of the abyss, SQH nowhere to be found.
It is driving him mad, but he knows it's SQH calling for him.
He thinks back to SQHs threat, that MBJ would never be able to find him but he also assumed that was only the case if SQH didn't want to be found.
Why would he call out so often if he didn't want to be found?
Eventually SQHs constant cries drive him to approach Junshang's consort. He's so driven that perhaps he doesn't go about it in quite the right way.
"Where is he?" He shakes the cultivator's shoulders demanding answers, "He keeps calling for me but I can't find him. You know where he is don't you?"
before SQQ can open his mouth to answer LBH descends on MBJ in a fury.
The two fight for the first time since MBJs Ascension and it's closer than any of their contests before. MBJ needs SQH back and even Junshang's strength won't stand in his way.
Be fore either of them can do any real damage SQQ intervenes.
"I know where he is! and I *think* I know how to get there."
MBJ stops mid swing abandons the fight and kneels at the human's feet.
 "Tell me, please."
SQQ collapses his fan and taps it against his chin.
"Binghe, give him Xin Mo."
"BUT SHIZUN! It will corrupt him!" They had been dual cultivating frequently to aid Binghe's resistance of the blade.
SQQ sighs and mutters under his breath,
"I can't believe I didn't notice how much of that bastard's favourite you are." He turns to Binghe. "It won't"
"But Shizun, how do you know?"
"This master just knows." he mutters again "and because it happened in chapter 669."
Chapter 669 was some dumb plot that had LBH stranded without his sword in a land beyond even his famous general's reach, after some adventure and two new wives MBJ appeared as a deus ex machina at a crucial plot point just to deliver Xin Mo back to the protagonists hands.
SQQ hadn't payed as much attention to that moment because LBH's wrath after getting the sword back was a real badass moment.
It wasn't until a little reflection (and another nitpicking forum goer pointing it out) that he realized MBJ never hesitated to hand the blade back, nor had he ever made an attempt at owning the sword.
Any other demon would have turned traitor in an instant.
Even SHL one of the protagonists wives was constantly trying to take the legendary sword from her husband.
 But MBJ was immune.
Because he'd always been the author's favourite.
Binghe Begrudginly retrieves Xin Mo but before he hands it over SQQ gives MBJ a short lecture.
"This will likely only work if he's *actually* calling for you."
He jabs his fan into MBJs chest accusingly, "You are not to harm him, our world doesn't have cultivation. He'll be very fragile compared to demon strength."
Mobei Jun ignores the slight instead nodding gravely.
Binghe seems to catch his words, "Shizun what do you mean by your worl-"
SQQ cuts him off instead continuing his lecture.
"Your are to only bring him back if he wants to come back." MBJ nods again, If SQH wants to stay he will stay with him where ever the man has escaped to
He can't imagine why SQH might want to stay, he calls to MBJ daily if not more, without cultivation the place must truly be a hellscape.
Now he just has to wait for SQHs next call.
SQH gets home from a long day at work. He'd made the mistake of trawling the PIDW forums only to find a memorial post for Peerless Cucumber.
RIP bro at least you get to live out your domestic dreams with the protagonist now.
He's starting to feel doubtful of his whole experience with the system in his novel but hearing of Cucumber's death makes him hope it was, even if it does make his own situation a little more tragic.
But it wasn't like he and Mobei Jun were actually dating.
Thinking about MBJ lowered his mood and as he was putting his work bag away he managed to kick his new kitchen table hard stubbing his toe.
"Fuck! My King who put that there?!"
He hisses and pulls his foot up trying to relieve the pain.
Only to be knocked on his ass when a cool whirlwind of shadow laced with the scent of blood begins to swirl in the centre of his apartment.
The shadows coalesce into a familiar demonic form.
 "Mobei Jun!"
Icy blue eyes snap their attention to him but there is something determined and cold in his gaze.
"Where is he?" The demon's voice is low and dangerous.
Fear creeps up SQHs spine when he realizes MBJ doesn't recognize him.
Which why would he? Airplane looks nothing like SQH,  he had taken a few days to get used to the difference but there is no way for Mobei Jun to know that.
How did he even get to the real world, his teleportation was a bit OP but never like this.
Then Xin Mo is leveled at his throat.
Mobei Jun paced waiting for Shang Qinghua's call, the moment he registers the faint "my King." He was pouring his power through the sword surrounding himself in shadow to find his human.
The trip is strange, different from usual but he's sure he's on the right path.
He appears in a strange place, both familiar and bizarre. An oddly plain room cluttered in a manner that reminded him of SQHs office, despite the fact he barely recognized a single object.
He searches the room but Shang Qinghua is nowhere to be found.
There is however a man on the floor staring at him wide eyed.
"Where is he?" He expands his sense to find Shang Qinghua, to see him, to smell him, to hear him but there is nothing.
There is just the stranger. So he levels Xin Mo at the man.
"Where is Qinghua?"
The man trembles clearly afraid and Mobei Jun steps forward and his target scrambles back hitting a wall behind him, staring up and Mobei Jun with wide doe-like eyes.
Oddly Familiar eyes.
"Junshang?"
No that wasn't right, the demon emperor wasn't quite as stocky as this man, and his hair was cascading curls rather than short cut frizz. Still the man's feature's were unmistakably similar to Luo Binghe's.
Perhaps a relative?
But no SQQ had said there were no cultivators or demons here.
The question has the man shaking his head frantically his movements skittish and familiar but not like Luo Binghe, like someone else.
 "Who are you?"
Shang Qinghua's thoughts are running a mile a minute. MBJ was confusing him with LBH?
Maybe he kind of sort of used LBH as a power fantasy but that changed way back in chapter 14 when he realized his gay xanxia novel was going to sell better as a papapa odyssey.
But MBJ had Xin Mo AND he was looking for Shang Qinghua, who was Airplane but wasn't Airplane. He debated the merits of revealing himself.
MBJ looked pissed, and they hadn't been on great terms before he left. On the other hand would MBJ even believe him if he told the truth?
And there was Xin Mo to deal with. How did MBJ get his hands on the mythical sword? Was it corrupting him? Worse what if it wasn't his MBJ.
His mind buzzes as he tries to think up a reasonable lie, so his lips start to move, because he needs to stall.
"M-m-my King?!"
Fuck.
MBJs eyes widen at the exclamation, old habits die hard apparently and it seems like those habits are going to get him killed
. He watches a wealth of emotion cross his King's usually stoic face and holds his breath wondering what emotion the roulette wheel will land on.
When Xin Mo moves he curls into himself preparing for the worst.
Only to be surprised by a clang. He peeks through his fingers only to see the OP blade thrown across the room sticking out of his drywall.
He doesn't see much however before Mobei Jun is invading his space.
There is something surreal about seeing the giant ice demon kneeling in front of him in his studio apartment, looking at him with a fragile sort of hope in his eyes.
"Qinghua?"
SQH slowly uncurls to stare wide eyed at the demon in front of him a cool hand settles on his cheek. Eyes as bright and deep as pools of water darting back and forth, searching with more emotion than he's ever seen.
SQH swallows thickly nodding with trepidation. He feels something in his gut twist, aching with the gentleness MBJs thumb strokes his cheek.
"The same freckles." And SQH chokes out a laugh. The one thing that gave him away is something he could never get rid of in either life.
He didn't think MBJ had ever even noticed. His laugh gives way to a sob, he's bursting with tears now that MBJ is here, for him.
"I never meant to leave my king!"
He's always been an ugly crier but MBJ doesn't seem to care, pulling him to his chest.
Which is SQHs dream spot, really he'd always wanted to sob into his king's bosom. So he does enthusiastically, while MBJ holds him just a little too tight.
He shakes, only to realize its MBJ making shuddering breaths.
They sit there on the floor wrapped in each other crying.
It isn't until they're cried out breathing into each other that SQH discovers a flaw to having an ice demon boyfriend.
He's frozen to MBJs chest

writing pattern game!
Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
tagged by @mikkeneko - thanks for thinking of me/bringing me in to play!
The first time it happens, Luo Binghe thinks it to be a symptom of the Endless Abyss. - stuffed with fluff (and blood and bones and rage)
Shen Yuan… has possibly let himself become a bit too relaxed since he first transmigrated. - raised by winter winds
Luo Binghe is standing outside Shen Yuan’s favorite convenience store. - if you don't have your own boyfriend, rented is fine
For everything he’s got going against him - that is, being a completely straight, cis guy who spends his free time reading webnovels modeled after the stereotypical man’s power fantasy - Shen Yuan would like to think he’s a fairly decent guy. - pretty things are for pretty girls
Luo Binghe is certainly not unhappy with the growth spurt he went through in the Abyss. - bite size
Shen Yuan has, as the second son, been able to get out of many of the duties often expected of a well to do young master. - a demon, a cultivator, and a (prospective) wife
Transmigration is the sort of dream that every lonely, unaccomplished nerd yearns for at least a little bit. - for want of a pomegranate
Shen Yuan has, all things considered, had a decent enough transmigration experience. - i'll be your boy backstage
Luo Binghe is assigned to Shen Qingqiu’s pod at the start of the colder months. - shallow water weather
Luo Binghe doesn’t usually like surprises. - wedding suprises: the bad, the worse, and the downright miserable
i... actually wasn't expecting there to be that obvious of a pattern. i very clearly like to start with a short and to the point sentence... am i competing to see if i can have a sentence shorter than the fic title lmao??
other than that, this cuts off what comes next, but most of these are setups to follow up with a "but," wherein the "but" is what really gets the fic going. considering how frequently i write sqq's pov, which is full of habitual denials and repressions and mental gymnastics, i imagine that this sort of pattern might be a symptom of that 😂
anyway, i'm a bit too shy to be tagging others, so anyone who wants to do this can take this as their invitation to do so! tumblr global @ everyone hehe

The songs Power by Isak Danielson and Religion also by Isak Danielson are Bingliushen songs and I need to TALK about it before I EXPLODE.
Specifically, the lyrics reminds me of how Liu Qingge likely feels about Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe respectively, set specifically in my brain during that transition period between when Lqg knows he loves Sqq (and also is just starting to catch romantic feelings for lbh) but is not with them yet. Lmao almost a staple in the slow development of bingliushen, that relationship development angsty period of time.
I'm gonna try to keep this (relatively) short so instead of looking at the whole song I'm gonna pick and choose the parts I think apply the most.
Power by Isak Danielson:
So this song. My god, this song killed me when I first listened to it, even just on its own. I didn't need to connect it to a ship to feel so many FEELS about it. It just has a very strong yearning but helpless to do anything about it, kinda vibe. It's so....resigned?? And bittersweet and it drives me feral. Also, melody-wise, I appreciate that even though it's a sad song, it has a kinda higher energy feel to it, a strong slow drum beat later in the song, and that spices things up a little. I personally tend to get slightly bored with low energy slow songs.
Even at the first few lyrics:
I still look at you with eyes that want you When you move, you make my oceans move too
If I hear my name, I will run your way
Can we say that we love each other
Can we play like there ain't no other
If I hear my name, I will run your way.
So, we hear it, yes? I think what strikes me about Liu Qingge in all the fics I've read about him, and even in the source material is how steadfast and reliable and devoted this man is. He really does arrive anytime Sqq calls or needs his help. And plus "can we play like there ain't no other", is really just Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge meanwhile, watching them happy together.
It's my desire that you feed
You know just what I need
You got power, you got power
You got power over me
I give my all now, can't you see. Why won't you set me free? You got power, you got power
You got power over me
The gist of that is of course. The yearning. And the whole, we don't have a choice about being in love or who we love. Especially applies to the "why won't you set me free" line. And I think it's kind of a given that when you love someone, they just have power over you; power to hurt you, power to make you happy, it's just unavoidable.
The last part of the song:
You're the one that seduced me, lured me in with your beauty, now I know that you used me
So I don't take this line literally because I fully believe sqq is too fucking oblivious to purposely seduce someone. *Car salesman noises* This bad boy can fit so much compartmentalization in it and all that.
However, this line to me just has that bitter type of resentment to it, that, I know you didn't do this on purpose but regardless, I somehow keep coming back to you, and I somehow feel used and hurt and it makes it worse because I can't be mad at anyone but myself. It isn't your fault I fell for you. And it makes it all the more painful that I can't blame you for it.
During the song (and honestly explaining it verbally is gonna sound hella stupid so please just go listen to the song it's linked up there) there's one line that keeps getting repeated in the background: "I'm ready now", and it repeats twice here before continuing onto the next line:
All you did was confuse me
You're no longer what I need, touch me slow, feel my heart bleed
So therefore, in this line, I kinda set this as a situation where maybe Lqg has already sorta started something up with bingqiu, but it still hasn't developed into a fully fledged relationship regardless. Lqg knows at this point that this arrangement is probably temporary, knows whatever they're doing right now is self destructive, likely not good for him, "you're no longer what I need, touch me slow feel my heart bleed" but regardless he's kind of. Ready to except whatever they'll give him because this is all he believes he can have ("I'm ready now"). Regardless of if it is what he needs, it is all he wants, even if it's killing him.
Religion by Isak Danielson:
This one. OOF. It just. The chords and the background chorus and just everything. It's called religion but it really does invoke that type of feeling. And the yearningggg. Anyways, 10/10 song, in general I just really love this artist's music, so this post is about bingliushen but also just a poorly disguised to fangirl about these SONGS AS WELL, MY GOD. Y'all should check Isak Danielson's other songs out too if you get the chance.
Anyways, this one is for sure set in that transition period where Lqg and Lbh really don't know what to make of each other. They're rivals but not really, they're enemies but not really, and they're in that transition not really sure if they still hate each other, truly. Possibly hate fucking each other too. Your headcanon, your choice lmao.
The first line:
Can we say goodbye to, to the lies you told, I know I'm wiser, i've been here before
I believed your stories
At least the blind in me
You gave my eyes, what they wanted to see
I've lost my reality
I've lost everything in me
So this, I interpret as thinking about that time during the 5 years when Lbh and Lqg were fighting over Sqq's body (that is an absolutely ridiculous sentence to say objectively, I'd like to just get that on record). Lqg doesn't think too highly of Lbh throughout all this, and he doesn't trust Binghe. So those first few lines, how Lqg is wiser now, and although Lbh didn't lie to Lqg specifically, regardless he knows that Lbh can be manipulative, he's encountered five years of it. He doesn't trust demons in general very much either which is why I think the "I've lost my reality, I've lost everything in me" would be how he's feeling if/when he enters that kind of "we both like sqq and are hate fucking I guess" kind of relationship. I'm particularly thinking of an amazingly written bingliushen fanfic that is kind of a staple of the ship, Acernor's "Dual Cultivation or Date".
You act like a god, and you're trying too hard but I need it
I was once a believer
Now I'm back to believing
I'm tryna be smart with a stake through the heart, but I feel it
Turning into addiction
Praying in your religion
Religion
Chorus timmmeeeee; but yeah this one gives me even more hate-fucking vibes ("you act like a God and you're trying too hard, but I need it") because Lbh really does act like that, and Lqg is unimpressed but regardless he can't give up this unhealthy friends with benefits type situation with Sqq and Lbh because he still wants them even if it hurts ("I'm trying to be smart with a stake through my heart, but I feel it"). "I was once a believer, and now I'm back to believing" particularly is such a raw line to me, not sure why, but the idea of lqg, acting like a cynic all his life and then, falling for sqq and starting to lose that cynical outlook, only to gain it back once sqq gets married, and then getting that hope back, this time with both Sqq and Lbh?
Damn Lqg really does need like a lot of hugs and therapy though, god.
Future doesn't matter
I'd give it up for you
Even though I know that you'd never do
You know your power, and I know it too
I'll end up in fire, burning with you
I've lost my reality, I've lost everything in me
I think this is the part where Lqg really starts actually realizing that he cares about, maybe even loves Lbh. "Future doesn't matter, I'd give it up for you, even though I know that you'd never do", Lqg realizing that he would give up so much for Lbh but believing that he would never do the same, that his first priority will always be only Sqq.
"You know your power, and I know it too" In my brain this also mirrors how he thinks about Sqq.
"I'll end up in fire, burning with you"
So again, how he's slowly realizing that he'd be willing to sacrifice just as much for Lbh as for sqq, as their particular relationship develops past just love rivals/enemies, and there of course Lqg is going to go through another reality altering crisis, because not only is he in love with TWO married men who are married to EACH OTHER but now one of them is a HALF DEMON LORD, Lqg did not fUcking sign up for tHis, Can't have shit in Bai Zhan
This post is getting really long so Imma end it soon, but the point is these songs fit really well - although maybe it's just my personal experience instead of a universal one. Regardless, this ot3 drives me feral and this song drives me feral and I wanted to write about it. I believe after all this angst fest the three of them sort their shit out and end up in a healthy relationship with each other, but until then. I can't lie, I'm enjoying this grade A angst, 10/10.

Someone asked for a FIERCE son???

Shang Qinghua is scared.
There’s been plenty of instances, especially in this new life of his, where he has been in fear for his life. Every instance feels like it’s the worst one, in the time that it is happening. In the moment, when his heart seems to freeze, beating so quickly it’s almost like he can’t even hear it in the blood that rushes by his ears. When his breath stutters to a stop, and his stomach drops so sharply that it feels like it’s dug itself deep into the mantle of the earth.
In the moment, when it feels like he’s never been this scared in either of his lives.
Like a cornered animal, pinned down against cold stone marble floors, this snarling demon’s clawed hand encircling his throat with just barely enough pressure to make breathing something difficult. The cold, sharp point of a spear digging ever-so gently into his gut, just to remind him that it’s there.
“I’ll carve out each and every one of your bones,” the demon is crooning into his ear, fingers flexing against his jugular, just barely. “They will make excellent jewelry, a badge of great honor. A boast at how the revered and powerful Peak Lord Shang was felled by my hands.”
Revered? Shang Qinghua has absolutely no idea where this dipshit idiot got his information, but clearly his broker had decided it would be a good laugh to lead him around by the nose, because he is so far off the mark.
It’s far more like Shang Qinghua is barely tolerated. Kept around for his work ethic and quick results. But revered? No.
And powerful? Okay, in order to be a peak lord, Shang Qinghua had to meet certain expectations. There are prerequisites for becoming the successor of your Shizun in Cang Qiong. However, there are twelve peaks, and despite being ranked number four out of all of them, the peak lord of An Ding is hardly considered powerful.
This demon has it all wrong. But! Here he is, spear and claws cutting into Shang Qinghua’s skin, threatening his life.
Usually, Shang Qinghua has precautions in place for this very circumstance. There are so many exits he could have taken before this. Back up plans, routes to temporary safety. Hell, just calling for Mobei Jun gets the job done in a flash, half the time.
Okay, more than half.
But. However. Shang Qinghua had made certain oversights. Because he never, in any of those precautions, accounted for the additional presence of his bro. Shen Qingqiu, who is curled up against the wall across the room, pale and unmoving, blood dripping steadily from a gash in his head.
And so, like a cornered animal would, Shang Qinghua bares his teeth.
It should have been a warning, but the demon just laughs.
“Don’t pretend to be brave now, little cultivator,” he chuckles.
The hand on Shang Qinghua’s throat loosens, before removing itself completely so that those long, wickedly sharp claws can trail up the soft skin underneath his jaw. They press down as they go, just enough that Shang Qinghua can feel droplets of blood start trickling down his neck. The demon traces up his cheek with two claws, gently, and croons.
“I never imagined a small thing like you to be the infamous Lord Shang,” the demal continues. “I really did expect someone at least a little taller. But, small is fun, too! You gave me a good hunt, little one, so at least you lived up to some of the rumors.”
Any other day, Shang Qinghua would really love to know what the demons of the North say about him. Really. He’s dying of curiosity, about as much as he’s certain he doesn’t actually want to know.
It doesn’t matter right now, though. If there’s anything that Shang Qinghua is guaranteed to be able to work with, it's being underestimated.
“But, the chase is over now. This one wins, and Lord Shang loses.”
With that, the demon plunges the spear into Shang Qinghua’s stomach.
It’s cold, going in. Terrifying, knowing that there’s something ripping into you. The feeling as your body reacts to a foreign object’s invasion. Not quite at the conclusion that it should hurt, yet. Just… shock.
There’s a brief period of time before the shock makes it hard to move, though. Shang Qinghua knows, from experience, almost exactly how long it will take for his body to realize it’s suppose to be in pain. He has a precious few moments, and his teeth are still bared.
Shang Qinghua has been waiting. He’s good at that. He’s patient. He’s spent most of his life waiting for one thing or another. For plans to come to fruition, for schemes to set. For pieces to fall into place so that he can pull his strings. For this demon to finish his dumbass, dramatic monologue, and make the final blow.
Shang Qinghua is quick — he always has been. At the moment the spearhead enters his flesh, he’s already wriggled an arm forward and grabbed it by the shaft, just below where the demon holds it.
The demon makes a surprised noise when Shang Qinghua uses his grip to pull himself further onto the weapon. It’s the last sound he makes, beyond a wheeze of shock as Shang Qinghua jerks forward into his space and latches his jaw around the demal’s throat.
He sinks his teeth into flesh. It tastes salty. He can feel the point of the spear exiting his back, but he doesn’t pay it any mind. He clamps down as hard as he can and thrashes his head to the side and then back again.
The skin under his teeth breaks open. Bloods splurts out, dribbling in rivulets down his chin, and Shang Qinghua bites down even further. Something long and sinewy, stretched like a tube, bursts between his molars, coming apart over his tongue.
The demon collapses, falling away from where he’d been straddling Shang Qinghua’s legs. He crashes to the ground with wide, unseeing eyes, soft gurgles erupting from the demal’s mutilated neck before the sound dies out completely, and Shang Qinghua is left lying there on the cold marble floor, a spear protruding from his midsection.
He stares up at the ceiling, hyper aware of the shock that’s finally settling into his limbs. There’s copper and salt cloying in his mouth. He’s never been a fan of rare steaks, and this is even worse. He feels, distantly, as if he’s going to throw up. But, not now. Maybe in a little bit, after the shock wears off and the pain sets in.
Shang Qinghua experimentally tries to wiggle his toes. He succeeds, and so he moves on to the muscles in his arms, working at them until they contract and retract in the way he wants them to. He lifts up one arm, shakily, and carefully grabs the shaft of the spear that he’s currently impaled upon. He can feel the spearhead pressing uncomfortably against his back, from where it’s exited the wound.
He can’t just pull it out the way that it came in, like he wants to. It will catch, and drag against already torn flesh. The backside of the spearhead is serrated. It will just make it worse.
He has to snap the spear head off before pulling the shaft out.
But, it’s not like a shoddy spear, with a stone head and a wooden shaft. This is a well-crafted weapon, without any seams to serve as a weak point. The spearhead is carved of the same strong metal as the shaft. This was forged by a master weaponsmith, with demonic spells carved elegantly into the detailing.
Shang Qinghua isn’t going to be able to break it with regular, Qi-enhanced strength. He can’t start healing himself until he removes the spear, either. And he can’t push the spear all the way through, since the opposite end is an oddly shaped hilt. Bulky. That would do worse damage than the serrated spearhead.
He’s kind of… stuck. Shang Qinghua isn’t entirely sure how to get the spear out of himself without making it worse. He’ll have to wait until help arrives.
However, he might just bleed out before then!
And, across the room, though his head wound has sluggishly ceased its bleeding, his best friend is still unconscious.
This is fun. Exciting! A real puzzle to solve.
Hey, System!
[System remains in standby mode during all cutscenes.]
What the fuck is that suppose to mean? Cutscenes? There’s never been cutscenes! This is just another shitty excuse not to help!
I hate you.
[System remains in standby mode during all cutscenes.]
Shang Qinghua groans, and carefully begins to maneuver himself onto his side.
The pain hits. Thankfully not all at once. It comes in increments, so Shang Qinghua is able to sit up and get his legs underneath him before it really starts making a nuisance of itself, but it does come.
It hurts, dammit. He’s had worse, of course, but it still hurts like a bitch, and there’s a hazy blackness encroaching on the very edges of Shang Qinghua’s vision that won’t go away no matter how many times he blinks.
He shoves the pain to the back of his mind and focuses on standing. It’s an arduous process, but he manages it, and he’s by Shen Qingqiu’s side within thirty seconds of almost drunken stumbling.
Shang Qinghua is very mindful of the spear that still impales him as he kneels in a controlled collapse beside his best friend. He angles his chest away from the other man so the heavy end of the spear points downwards and away from them both. He lifts a visibly shaking hand to Shen Qingqiu’s brow and begins channeling qi into him.
Just because he can’t heal himself with the spear still in him, doesn’t mean he can’t heal his buddy.
It’s a short process. He’s no healer, but he and Mu Qingfang are — close, and Shang Qinghua has learned a thing or two from the very best that their sect has to offer. Shen Qingqiu’s eyes are fluttering open within minutes.
“Ow,” the man murmurs, raising a hand to his most-likely aching skull. It lands to cover Shang Qinghua’s, fingers momentarily intertwining with his, and Shen Qingqiu straightens up from where he has slumped against the wall to look over at him.
“What hit me?” he groans, confusion cinching his brow.
Shang Qinghua sucks in a slow, controlled breath. The pain is hammering at his senses insistently, but he shoves it to the back of his mind again. It’s an ongoing battle, like trying to fight off a jumping dog with boundless energy when you’re going off two hours of sleep and are short three cup of coffee. And you have a migraine that makes every single one of your joints feel like there’s a knife stuck in them.
It’s a very specific metaphor. Which might not be a metaphor, but more of an correlation to that one time he’d been roped into dogsitting for his older brother.
That didn’t necessarily hurt as bad as this, per say, but it was like, similarly annoying?
To… being impaled?
Right.
It takes a few moments, Shang Qinghua still focused on channeling his qi, but Shen Qingqiu eventually becomes coherent enough to recall how exactly he’d ended up like this, and he pins him with a sharp look of examination. Which quickly turns to pale-faced horror.
“Airplane!” Shen Qingqiu hisses, eyes wide and terrified. “Airplane, stop! Why are you — why are you healing me? You have a fucking spear sticking out of you, oh my fucking god—!”
They quickly switch positions. Suddenly, Shang Qinghua is the one on the ground, with a panicked Shen Qingqiu leaning over him, hands hovering above the spear but not quite touching it, uncertainty warring with fear on the man’s face. No fan to hide the expression, this time.
Amusement and fondness twists up in Shang Qinghua’s gut, mingling with the internal bleeding that he is most certainly experiencing. He reaches up a hand to clumsily pay at his bro’s face.
“Peerless,” he breathes out. He can feel a smile curling at the corners of his mouth. “Bro, you’re so pretty…. I did so, so good…. character descriptions absolutely flawless....”
“Great, you’re delirious.” Shen Qingqiu huffs out, trying to sound annoyed. There’s still that note of fear in there, though, that can’t be mistaken. “Airplane, pull yourself together. How the fuck am I suppose to get this out of you? I need you sober, man.”
“Drunk on paiiin,” Shang Qinghua giggles out in a singsong, and his bro pulls a face.
“That sounds so wrong. Don’t say that. Instead, tell me how to— to unimpale you? Maybe? Airplane?”
Shang Qinghua tilts his head back. Cold marble presses against his crown. It’s soothing, kinda. He feels like he’s burning up with a fever. The slight chill is… nice. He closes his eyes.
“Fuck,” Shen Qingqiu says. A hand lands on his shoulder and gives him a very light shake. “Don’t fall asleep. Don’t fucking fall asleep! Airplane, please.”
Right.
Shang Qinghua sucks in another slow, careful breath, and forces his eyes open. He fights past the haziness that’s trying to cover his vision, and locks eyes with his martial brother and best friend. Shen Qingqiu looks terrified, eyes wide and damp around the edges.
Awww, he does care!
Shaking the thought away, he reaches out with one hand and slaps his palm against the shaft of the spear. The vibrations travel down its length and into Shang Qinghua, and his entire torso alights with fresh, white hot pain. He stiffens and smothers a cry.
“Shit! Airplane, what the fuck?! Stop!”
He ignores Shen Qingqiu. Shang Qinghua is more awake now, which is exactly what he was going for.
“Bro,” he says. It comes out breathless, more of a wheeze. “We can’t break the spear with normal cultivation.”
“Then how the fuck—?!”
“No, no. Listen. You can’t break it with normal cultivation. It needs an elemental touch, and I’m not about to electrocute myself to death again.”
Shen Qingqiu pauses, staring down at him. He blinks.
“But,” Shen Qingqiu says, realization alighting in his eyes. His bro is so clever. “I don’t have a lightning element. Mine is earth.”
“Yep! Bro.”
“Airplane?”
Shang Qinghua swings out his arm and slaps it against Shen Qingqiu’s chest, turning his hand to grab the front of his bro’s robes. He uses his grip to haul himself up into a sitting position, leaning in to speak directly into the other man’s ear.
“Bro, disintegrate the spear. Like, I am begging you here. It fucking hurts.”
Shen Qingqiu leaned back in order to stare at him. After a few seconds, he shakes his head roughly, eyes wide.
“R—Right!” He says, and reaches out to curl his fingers hesitantly around the spear shaft. His other arm has curled protectively around the small of Shang Qinghua’s back, helping to hold him up as his strength quickly drains away from him.
“Right. Um, just… give me a second. I’m not… um, I’m not really good with elemental techniques….”
“Take your time,” Shang Qinghua says sincerely, before blacking out into his bro’s shoulder.
“Hey, Airplane?”
Shang Qinghua glances up from the door of the throne room that they’ve summarily been trapped inside of.
It was a beautiful scheme of their opponent, truly. Using the defenses of the wards that are intended to protect against them. Setting up a grand distraction in the form of a false invasion, drawing away the guards and his king to the frontlines of the battle. Meanwhile, Shang Qinghua and Shen Qingqiu were trapped within the seat of power of the palace the very moment that the wards had initiated the total lockdown.
Nothing goes in, nothing goes out.
It’s a complete, absolute protection — but it can’t do anything to protect them from someone already inside the wards themselves, and subsequently had cut them off from any back up in the form of a teleporting demon king, as not even Mobei Jun himself can break through the ancient wards of his own ancestors.
It was a severe oversight. He’ll have to rectify it immediately, once this is all taken care of and finished.
Loopholes being taken advantage of in such creative ways! Shang Qinghua would be so very impressed, if only they weren’t his wards being made a mockery of.
He looks over at his bro, to find Shen Qingqiu staring down at the corpse of their attacker with an odd look on his face.
Really, Shang Qinghua is kind of embarrassed. For both of them! They could have taken this guy, working together. Neither of them are slackers in the power department, and Shen Qingqiu in particular inherited a pretty strong body to begin with, that he has since only made more powerful. Shang Qinghua himself is, while not exactly super impressive, certainly nothing to sniff at. After all, he is a peak lord, too.
Together, they should have been able to take this guy.
Too bad the dipshit demon had foreseen that, and had worked in the element of surprise. It really had been too quick. Strike down the more powerful of them first, and fight the lesser head on. Shen Qingqiu is unconscious against the wall, and Shang Qinghua is fast, but apparently not fast enough.
Seriously. It’s embarrassing.
“Yeah, bro?”
“Did you….” Shen Qingqiu looks up from the body, glancing at the bloodied mess that is the front of Shang Qinghua’s robes. He points a finger at him, and looks back down at the corpse in clear befuddlement. “Did you, uh…. Um, how exactly did you kill this guy?”
Shang Qinghua pauses his work with the wards. They’re a true beast, really, and he’s gonna need his bro’s help anyway. It’ll take more than just him to dismantle the lockdown. He stands up and wanders over to stare down at the corpse as well.
It’s a fucking mess. The corpse had drained out of the neck until there wasn’t any more blood to bleed, resulting in a massive puddle of deep crimson that has expanded a good five feet in diameter around the demon’s body. The body itself is pale in death, an ashy green color that has become mottled in places due to the absence of blood. The eyes are still open, staring sightlessly at nothing, and the face still bears a slightly slack expression of shock.
It’s disturbing to look at, sure, but they’ve both seen worse. Shang Qinghua is a little confused about why his bro seems so uneasy.
“Uh,” he says, head tilted to the side in thought. “Well, he stabbed me…. hm. Oh! Yeah, so I kinda, like, used the spear to pull him closer so I could, y’know,” Shang Qinghua snaps his teeth in a theatric grimace, and gives his head a slight jerk to the side.
He then smiles brightly at his friend, who is staring at him with an expression he can’t really describe.
“And, yeah,” he finishes, lamely.
“There’s blood,” Shen Qingqiu says. “In your teeth.”
“Hm,” Shang Qinghua frowns. He runs his tongue or his teeth, and grimaces for real at the tacky feeling that coats them. Not even going to mention the taste. “Can blood stain, like, bone? Teeth are bone. Do you think it’ll stain?”
“Airplane, did you rip out that guy’s throat with your teeth?”
Shang Qinghua frowns at his friend. “Um, yeah? Didn’t I just say that?”
“Haha, you did.” Shen Qingqiu gives a strange laugh. It sounds a little hysterical. “You actually did.”
Shang Qinghua watches in bewilderment as the other man spins on his heel and takes a few steps away from him. His steps bring him closer to the corpse. He stops just shy of his feet kicking into it and stares down at it for a long few moments that feel like they stretch into minutes.
Then, Shen Qingqiu shakes his head slowly, and walks back over to him.
“That’s so fucking metal, bro,” he says, finally. “Like, I’m both terrified and very, very impressed.”
“Oh.” Shang Qinghua says. He runs his fingers through the back of his hair self-consciously, feeling at where the strands have come loose from his bun. “Thanks. Listen, I’m gonna need a hand with the wards. They can only be unlocked from the inside, and usually I’d be able to just do it myself, but I’m almost spent, dude. Like, I need a fucking nap, as soon as possible. Imma need your qi.”
“Sure, what little I can give of it. I used up a lot on that medical technique for your, uh, impalement. I’m no doctor, man.” Shen Qingqiu shrugs. He casts one last vaguely incredulous glance between Shang Qinghua and the demon’s corpse, before following him over to the two, large and imposing throne room doors.
They’re swinging them open about fifteen minutes later, and both of them are forced to duck out of the way as a barrage of deadly sharp icicles comes raining down almost upon their heads.
Shang Qinghua grabs his best friend by the arm and flings him back, raising his other arm up into the air to snap his fingers. He winces at how the movement pulls at his still incredibly sore injury. Thankfully, he’d managed to heel it enough that the wound itself has closed, but he’s pretty sure he’s still got some internal bleeding going on in there.
There’s a light shimmer in the air before them, barely visible, as his qi condenses into a weak physical barrier. Most of the icicles shatter upon contact with it, but some make it through, and Shang Qinghua tugs his increasingly drowsy martial brother out of the line of fire.
Ah, head wounds are so annoying. Guess he’ll have to drag Shen-ge with him to see Qingfang, after all.
“My king!” He shouts, and then raises his voice as another volley of icicles begins to form from the moisture in the air. Being in the cold north, there’s plenty of it. “Mobei Jun! Stop! It’s us!”
The icicles pause, and then fall to the floor, shattering into thousands of tiny shards of ice that immediately begin to melt into the floor. There’s no time to appreciate the built-in clean up function born from his beautiful world building skills, however, as a large figure comes striding across the outer hall toward them, intent in every single step.
As soon as Mobei Jun and the retinue of guards spot the two peak lords, they fall to an abrupt stop. The guards all exchange glances, but it’s difficult to make out their expressions underneath the helmets of ice. His king, barefaced as always, looks a little surprised. Not much, of course, but his eyes are a little wider than usual.
“Shang Qinghua,” Mobei Jun says, and then stops.
“Yes, my king?”
There’s a long strength of silence. Shang Qinghua frowns and turns to his friend, only to find Shen Qingqiu staring at him as well. His fan flutters in front of his face, having appeared out of absolutely nowhere — seriously, does the man keep spares in a qiankun space? — and the eyes that peer over it at him look distinctly amused.
“Shang-ge,” he says, mirth coating every word.
“What?”
Shen Qingqiu watches him for a moment, and then snickers.
“Shen-ge, what?”
“You look like you just ripped someone’s throat out.” Shen Qingqiu comments idly.
Annoyed, Shang Qinghua reaches up and rubs the back of his sleeve across his mouth. He scowls at his bro. “That’s because I just did? Why are you laughing at me?”
Someone coughs. It sounds like one of the guards. Another hurriedly shushes the one, and all the demons in the hall are very still and very silent. It’s kind of eerie, actually. Mobei Jun is still staring at him, too.
Is it because Shang Qinghua has made such a mess? He will clean it up, your majesty, he promises!
“What did it taste like?” Shen Qingqiu suddenly wonders aloud, watching him inquisitively, and Shang Qinghua rounds on him with a sigh of exasperation.
“Gross.” He says firmly. He wipes his sleeve over his mouth once more, for good measure. Blood flakes off of his chin, and he makes a face. “Disgusting. I’m never doing that again. Ugh.”
Shen Qingqiu’s fan flutters, and his friend laughs at him.
“Shang Qinghua.” Mobei Jun says, this time more firmly.
He turns toward his king and folds his hands out in front of him, bowing just slightly enough to show respect. “My king, this one will have the mess cleaned up, do not worry. However, both this one and his martial brother require the assistance of our fellow peak lord after such an ordeal, so if your Majesty would allow us….”
Mobei Jun’s haze sharpens, and he takes a step forward. Always one to read in between the lines of what is being said, he demands answers. “You are hurt?”
“This one was impaled. Healed now, but likely requires further treatment just in case. Brother Shen has a head wound that I would like for our sect doctor to look at.”
“I’m fine,” Shen Qingqiu says, annoyed.
He sways slightly to the side, righting himself before Shang Qinghua can reach out to steady him, and gives him an impervious look when he tries to set his hand on the man’s arm anyway.
Shang Qinghua rolls his eyes. “Sure, as Shen-ge says. Would you like to tell Qingfang, or should I?”
Shen Qingqiu glares at him.
He turns back to Mobei Jun, who has taken a few steps to the side and is trying to peer around them for a glimpse at the mess on the throne room floor. Shang Qinghua steps in front of him, blocking the view.
His king narrows his eyes at him, and Shang Qinghua swallows down the usual nervousness that tries to crawl up his throat at the look. He is tired, he’s got a headache, his qi levels are at rock bottom, he’d just been impaled, and Shang Qinghua thinks he deserves a fucking nap, okay?
He summons up a polite smile and gives his king another bow. “If my king permits it…?” He hedges once again.
Mobei Jun glowers at him for a couple more long moments, the line of demonic guardsmen at his back unrelenting and immovable.
“The invasion force at the gates,” his king says slowly, eyes once again going to the throne room just beyond their little rendezvous point here. “It was only a bluff?”
“Yes, my king.”
“And the assassin?”
“Dead, my king.”
“.... Hmph.”
Well, Shang Qinghua has no idea what that sound means.
Mobei Jun stares at him some more, before finally nodding his head once. “This king will take you to Qian Cao.”
Shang Qinghua beams at the man. “That would be amazing! Many thanks, my king!”
Mobei Jun lets out a huff and pivots on his heel to face the contingent of guardsdemals instead, his back shown to them.
From Shang Qinghua’s shoulder, Shen Qingqiu quietly snorts into his fan.
“Gather a cleaning crew for both the battlefield and the throne room,” Mobei Jun barks out, and the guards scatter.
He turns back to face the two peak lords, and holds out one arm, not even looking at them.
Shang Qinghua wraps one arm around his bro’s waist. From how unsteady Shen Qingqiu still is, he doesn’t really trust the man to hold on for the entire trip. And falling off mid-teleportation is definitely not fun. Shang Qinghua can attest to that.
Mobei Jun is scowling when he reaches out and sets his arm into the crook of the king’s elbow, but he steps into the teleportation before Shang Qinghua can even consider asking him what’s wrong.

Hello im here to cause trouble. Zyx transmigrates into Yue Qingyuan.
hi sorry, i was busy with skule and work
SJ!SQQ would immediately clock an imposter, if Z!YQY doesn’t play it right as they transmigrate
(bad ending SJ!SQQ murders Z!YQY lol)
Uhhhh if Z!YQY manages to sus out what’s happening, and with the limited (and lacking) perspective in PIDW they manage to discover and speculate on a few things
og!YQY barely has his shit together. Sword and cultivation masquerading as whole, perfect façade as sect leader gone in his private quarters, odd trinkets that seem so mundane for a powerful man to keep. Heap and heaps of spiritually potent gifts, boxed in beautiful lacquered wood and ready to go... to whom?
og!YQY isn’t stupid (that was her worst case opinion), just indulgent. ZYX was of an absolutely low opinion of YQY - his behavior was similar to academic advisors that let their shittier students run roughshod over the rest of their mentees, sabotaging, scheming, stealing, all the nasty stuff. And while ZYX despises those students, they also feel it’s the professors’ job (as the ones that selected these students at that academic level) to enforce and impart integrity on those assholes. the SQQ&YQY dynamic is everything that pisses her off
OG!LBH missed a lot of detail when it didn’t concern his immediate sphere of influence. He noted that SQQ ‘hated’ YQY, but Z!YQY (with a more normal and socialized upbringing than all these trauma-bait characters) starts to understand that it’s almost like mean pigtail pulling. Baffling.
ok ok ok... there’s history there, and holy shit out of all these low iq imbeciles, it’s gonna be the most vicious fucker out there (barring bingge) that will find them out.
Z!YQY grits their teeth, pulls xuan su out, and fakes a qi deviation like their life depends on it (it kinda does). it fucking hurts, like someone stuck an immersion blender inside, pureed their life essence into a bisque, and sucked it out their belly button through a straw. so it’s kinda necessary that Z!YQY stay on qian cao for a bit
“Asking Mu-shidi... don’t tell Shen Qingqiu”
MQF pauses whatever he’s doing. gives Z!YQY a Look.
“Has Shen-shixiong lost zhangmen-shixiong’s favor?”
Z!YQY tries so hard to not let the ‘o i fucked up’ look slip out.
“This... one has given more thought to--to many subjects,” they answer vaguely. MQF thinks they look pensive and melancholic. Z!YQY is actually tiptoeing through a verbal and social minefield. They look up, and give MQF a helpless smile. “On this shixiong’s sickbed, we can afford to be more candid. Mu-shidi, please tell me your honest opinion?”
using every ounce of their gossip-gathering skills (not that they developed it for evil - it was just fun to know gossip, and sometimes people needed to vent and then they would say the most interesting things -), Z!YQY pries out MQF’s perspective on the SQQ-YQY Issue. it’s not a complete perspective, but there’s more to go on with YQY’s hidden cultivation issues, SQQ’s also unstable cultivation (?!?!?), and the... sheer duration of this.
Since they were disciples.
Z!YQY thinks they know the approach to take now. It’s not going to be resolved by one, grand and impeccable act towards SQQ - rather, Z!YQY is going to have to manipulate their dynamic to evolve.
It starts with a simple, distant greeting. “Shen-shidi,” at the next peak lord meeting, one that Z!YQY called to get an emergency update on the state of affairs due to ‘unexpected health issues’.
SQQ looks like Z!YQY backhanded their face. Anger and annoyance at some routine changing. but when SQQ starts mouthing off, sly and poisonous barbs thrown across the meeting hall, Z!YQY marvels at how obvious SQQ’s apprehension and fear are.
not one peak lord says anything addressing it.
LQG storms out of the meeting as soon as he is able to. “Lacking manners and respect for Zhangmen-shixiong - I refuse to stomach more of your insufferable attitude,” he calls out when others try to slow him down. He nods firmly in Z!YQY’s direction before stomping out and flying off on cheng luan (probably off to kill a thing - Z!YQY could commiserate after bad lab meetings)
the other peak lords try to (not so subtly) keep SQQ from Z!YQY (”Zhangmen-shixiong, perhaps it’s best to let Shen-shixiong cool off for a bit...”), but Z!YQY lingers and the peak lords can no longer play at any polite pretense to separate the two.
SQQ is vicious once out of public eye. between the two of them, he doesn’t hold himself back as the most elegant peak lord of cang qiong, needing only his tongue to devastate enemies - his words still poisonous but with a rawer quality, his body language barely contained and coiled with tension, unafraid to get up in Z!YQY’s face.
‘what,’ Z!YQY thinks as SQQ verbally rips into his character and dignity, ‘the fuck did the original goods do to SQQ? steal his girl? fuck his mom?? smash and dash his sister??? YQY you did fucking something to this guy!’
again, this diatribe is so ... obviously someone lashing out. SQQ wants something from YQY, but a specific something on his terms. And whatever YQY was giving him before was not only what he wasn’t looking for, it actively upset him.
But potentially losing YQY upset him even more. Interesting.
okay, zyx; pull up your meager theater skills! let’s go!
Sad, overgrown puppy hangdog look. Tears barely held back. A soft hold on SQQ’s wrists, restraining him from further jabbing his really pointy finger into Z!YQY’s pecs (ouch).
“Qingyuan does not know what to do, nor is he able to read minds. Shidi wanted me to stop bothering him, and so Qingyuan listened. And now, it is apparent that Shidi wants something else he’s not saying.” timed look up through their eyelashes, even if YQY’s body is slightly taller than SQQ’s. hm. the hunched look adds to the sadboi act. “Qing--I don’t know what to give you if you don’t tell me, Shen Qingqiu.”
SQQ violently yanks himself out of Z!YQY’s grip.
One more blow. “Just... tell--let me...,” Z!YQY stops themselves from reaching out, and turns abruptly. “Pardon this shixiong.” Exit stage right.
-
So here’s the thing.
Z!YQY was banking on dangling the prospect of their changing dynamic to spook SQQ into saying something (and it’s less of a prospect and more of an inevitability). It’s definitely something, with the way that SQQ stalks performatively around Z!YQY, trying to draw attention to the fact that SQQ 1) exists, and 2) is fucking furious with Z!YQY.
Being as gentle-mannered as OG!YQY is exhausting, but SQQ definitely would not react well to ZYX’s true brand of conflict resolution (”Okay, tell me what the fuck is wrong with you/what the fuck is wrong with us because I want to fix it”).
(It pays off when SQQ finally cracks and it culminates into a one-sided fight where Z!YQY is accused of “finally throwing [SQQ] away like unwanted trash, the last black blemish on YQY’s gallant and spotless reputation”
“Shen Qingqiu.” SQQ looks like he’s about to strike Z!YQY himself. “I cannot change the past or stop each other from carrying its burdens. But-” Z!YQY hopes they’re getting the words right, through half-observation and half-speculation, “-you’re still here. How can you call this ‘being thrown away’?”
It’s not immediately resolved, but apparently SQQ takes it as Z!YQY wanting to wipe the past clean for both of them instead of leaving him and his 100 lbs overweight emotional luggage behind. Thus, Z!YQY gets away w never knowing nor using 'Xiao Jiu/Qi-Ge' stuff.
‘Oh,’ Z!YQY nearly says when a scent like fresh forest and cut bamboo invades their nose and they feel tentative, soft lips upon theirs.
SQQ looks offended when Z!YQY doesn’t reciprocate and pulls away, is mollified and made angrily bashful when his hand is pulled in for a kiss and then strong fingers gently lace through his own slender digits.
“One step at a time, one day at a time,” Z!YQY says, trying to keep their voice light and teasing. They tug SQQ’s hand up and back, leading the other peak lord until they’re standing chest to chest.)
-
(Eventually, as the sect leader, Z!YQY pays attention enough to catch SQH.
SQH is terrified of all the changes, but delighted to meet a fellow transmigrator that respects service workers (even if they pull no punches in how they think that PIDW was a malformed, inbred horse that needed to be brought out back and shot).
“Man, how’d you pull the stick out of SQQ’s ass? I thought he’d never get over the whole slave thing and the Qiu household-”
Z!YQY does a spit take. “-the what.”)

Who is in your Top 5 favorite MXTX characters and what is it about them that just *hits* you?
IT TOOK ME ALL DAY but i had FEELINGS. These are in no particular order
Lan Wangji - First one I fell in love with. LOve someone who’s protective (and a lil jelly) and also doesnt talk except when absolutely necessary bc thats meeee. LWJ is over here like *assumes people already know what he knows* like “yeah I bet he remembers the last thing i told him before he died”, meanwhile people (namely wwx) are misunderstanding his intentions and he’s misunderstanding WWX’s intentions and ahhh!!! too relatable!!!  He’s also gorgeous okay and powerful and rich but also just Very In Love I!!! Cry!! Especially in the extras. DOMESTIC WANGXIAN
Luo Binghe (you’ll notice a pattern here, my faves are the Overprotective Tops) AND also shoutout to LBH’s one and only husband SQQ, they’d be tied together at the number one spot but on their own only LBH makes the top 5 - God I just. Okay so first I fell in love with his babie self. Bunhe was wayy too adorable for his own good. Then LBH from the novel had me very frustrated and SCARED because how are they going to end up together!! This has a happy ending, right? RIGHT?? Because LBH did not feel like the type of character who’d get a happy ending, too possessive and emotionally immature (this is not to say I didnt like him. i just feared for him) BUT then, SQQ CHOOSES him, him!! Despite his flaws, he sees the potential for growth in him and says hey!! we’re not perfect but I think we can make this work AND THEY DOOO. The extras really solidified for me how much bingqiu loves each other (and with it my love for LBH). Friend said “theyre the most realistic couple” AND THEYRE RIGHT. [This is where I had a bighuge paragraph on why i love BQ but Ive omitted it bc this is about LBH] Ahem, but back to LBH, I love a character who loves Desperately. The scenes when SQQ “dies” and LBH cradles his lifeless body are OHHMAN, BUT ALSO when he sees him in his dreamscape and tries to wipe the blood on his face but only makes it worse aND ALSO when he’s just been reunited with SQQ after he got swallowed and the first thing LBH does is Kiss him!!!! AAHH head full, too many thoughts!!! Let’s move on!!!
Shi Wudu - The husband… Man where to even start… running away with his little brother, forgoing morality for his sibling, straight up rewriting fate for his sibling. The CONCERN, the WORRY, the LOVE, and yes, the Slight possessiveness!!
All of Yi City gang - (am I cheating? Yes) I just cant put one above another… XXC was probably my second fave after LWJ buT ALSO Song Lan and his relationship with XXC is SO TRAGIC and XY is the one tying it all together and then A-QING, my girl, I didnt know I loved her so much until way after finishing the novel. Yi City would not be the same without her. THEY’RE A SET DO NOT SEPARATE
EDIT because I realized I forgot 5. Wei Wuxian! I was going back and forth between him, Yin Yu, Shen Qingqiu, Mo Xuanyu and mmaybe Hua Cheng, and I have several reasons to like them all a lot! I think Shen Qingqiu and Wei Wuxian are eiher tied here or very close together. But Wei Wuxian is just. The most consistently likeable? I love SQQ a LOT and he’s completely different from any main character i could have expected and he had me in stitches laughing, BUT Wei Wuxian is just. Precious. He’s so motherly with the juniors, such a good friend, so loyal, so BRIGHT, and ofc his YP days are So. Amazing. Man, the contrast!!! It’s chilling, absolutely chilling. But my favorite side of him is him going full mama hen with the juniors. God he should be tied with his husband. Im so happy for him. Every time I remember his post-canon self, so happy and warm and well fed and loved and thoroughly fucked I just get so !!! yes!!! he deserves it so much!!! Wei Wuxian man, SO GOOD
But honestly you could say that about all of these characters and their respective partners (in SWD’s case, zam’s chosen partner for him, his brother). I truly feel like without their respective Others they would not appeal to me as much as they do. Except maybe LWJ and A-Qing. I can multiship them and do mean things to them and it makes me giddy instead of sad.

MXTX Superlatives #4: Best Arcs
Winner: Yi City Arc (MDZS)
Runner-Up: Black Water Arc, AKA BeefLeaf (TGCF)
NOTE: THESE ARE JUST MY PERSONAL OPINIONS.
[SPOILERS]
These two also happen to be two of the most popular arcs of the three MXTX novels, but here’s why I think these two are the best (and hence, most popular).
Simply put, the Yi City arc was a tragic love story. It was an entire story that could have gotten its own 500k word novel. But why a love story when all there seemed to be was deception, blood, and death? Because no matter how you look at it, the characters in that arc did love each other, some on a more fucked-up level than others.
Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen are literally sworn brothers and best friends (maybe more, however you wanna see it). The cultivation world couldn’t mention one without bringing up the other. Xue Yang knew just how close they were and sought to get revenge on XXC through SL, and he was completely successful. XXC loved SL, so he broke his vow to his teacher, and willingly gave up his eyes for him.
XY had a very strong love-hate relationship with XXC, with the love likely stemming from the hate. XY hated XXC and everything he represented, but after living with him for three years, there was no way he still just hated him. XY did not make any moves to harm XXC during that time, and it was only until he had no choice because SL showed up that XY revealed it all.
But he thought that just maybe XXC would value the years they spent together just a little bit, that maybe he had broken XXC’s unconditional devotion to SL, so he did not take into account XXC’s suicide. XY’s desperate gathering of the remnants of XXC’s soul, carrying it around for years, no doubt searching and attempting to piece it back together again before practically begging WWX to fix it.
And all the way up until the end, XY had not given up on XXC. The tiny candy that XXC had given up was kept on his persons for heaven knows how long. Even XY’s last words are one last desperate scream for something of XXC’s. He already lost, he was a dead man, and XY knew it, so why did he still scream at LWJ to give him the sword, when he logically knew that LWJ would never hand it over? Xue Yang did love Xiao Xingchen. It wasn’t healthy for either of them, but there was no doubt some sort of that sentiment there.
And finally, to tie up the tragedy of it all, SL comes to years later only to find that XXC is dead, and all he wants to do is apologize to XXC.
And that’s not even mentioning A-Qing and her depth of her love and sacrifice, and I would love to get into her, but this analysis is already too long, and I need to move onto TGCF.
Ahhhh, the Black Water Arc. Another story of love, betrayal, and hurt, but with a (slightly) happier ending, because it also comes with a hint of forgiveness. To start off, He Xuan was cheated out of the glorious destiny he was supposed to have, and ended up with an extremely shitty future, and he wanted revenge. Shi Wudu just wanted to save his little brother. Shi Qingxuan was just blissfully ignorant, and that was his only flaw.
HX’s revenge was targeted at SWD and mainly at SWD. He did not blame SQX for his ignorance, he blamed SWD for never telling SQX. HX infiltrated the heavens, probably without the intention of making friends or building relationships beyond those necessary to carry out his spying and whatnot, but somehow ended up as SQX’s best friend?? For years, HX followed by SQX’s side, humoring his every whim and request.
HX is a powerful demon king. One of the four Calamities. He doesn’t need to be following SQX around, listening to him chatter and go around in female form. But he did, and that’s why I think HX is another instance of love stemming from hatred.
Yes, the hatred was directed at SWD, and maybe SQX’s good fortune despite never really working for what he got. But the thing is, HX didn’t want SQX to get hurt. Injuring SQX never crossed his mind. In fact, HX even gave SQX chances for redemption. He just wanted SQX to choose him. Just one time, to choose his supposed best friend over his somewhat of an asshole brother.
To put this into a bit of perspective by bringing in SVSSS [spoilers]: Luo Binghe’s character is deeply rooted in the same idea. He just wanted his shizun to choose him once. He just wanted Shen QingQiu to put aside his morals and other people, and choose him. When SQQ didn’t, he went berserk and tried dramatically destroying the world or something.
So back to HX, he just wanted to be chosen over SWD once. When SQX didn’t, HX went on a rampage and killed SWD. And that was the end of his revenge - his life was ruined by SWD, so he killed him. Simple as that. He was satisfied after that.
But that’s the thing, was he?
I shed some tears over their story while reading it, I’ll admit, but it did not take very long for it to fade into the background as just another shit storm in the course of the novel. What really made it come back and haunt me was that HX came back for SQX. He fixed SQX’s fan and gave it back to him.
So did HX care about SQX? Without a doubt. Was it love? Personally, I think so. Because HX made it clear that after he got his revenge, he had no more reason to meddle with the affairs of the heavens. He was content to just do his own thing. And some may argue that HX only came back because he owed HC, but I think on some level, HX still cared.
So I still have some hope for BeefLeaf. I’m just glad they got hopeful endings in the novel, and I believe they both went on to find their happy endings, perhaps crossing paths a few more times.
That being said, it’s not that the other arcs are shallow or unimportant, I just think these two really capture both human essence and were just spectacularly developed, both towards the side characters but also the main plot and the main characters.

MXTX Superlatives #15: Best in Adapting to Modern World
Winner: Wei Wuxian
Runner-Up: Xie Lian
[SPOILERS for MDZS, TGCF]
This may not be the placement you’re expecting at all. But give me a chance to explain.
So this “adapting” is if they were suddenly dropped into the modern world one day without warning and must find a way to survive there, like time travel.
First, Wei Wuxian and Xie Lian both are survivors. If you think about it, their stories are a bit similar. Both of their journeys depict a tragic fall from grace.
WWX was one of the most promising young cultivators of his age, popular and loved by pretty much everyone he meets. He was forced into a corner when he gave up his golden core - literally, his entire future as a successful cultivator crashed and burned around him. But that wasn’t it. After that, he was thrown into the Burial Mounds to die.
With every one of the odds against him, WWX stubbornly grabbed onto any chance he had, turning to demonic cultivation to survive. He literally clawed his way back to the top, put on a cold mask against all those who didn’t know his story and still criticized him. He tried living his life as normally as he could with everything now flipped upside down, but of course, that didn’t work out for him. Lan Wangji tried telling WWX about how demonic cultivation could destroy a person, and as readers, we focus on how rudely WWX rejected LWJ’s advice, and it’s a good angst point.
But really, WWX probably does know the harm demonic cultivation would cause. But he had no choice. WWX would much rather live a bit longer to protect those he loved, so he threw away his good reputation and his health. While that’s a very extreme example of his ability to adapt and survive, it does prove that he’s a survivor, and he’s damn good at it.
Xie Lian is also very similar in that sense. He’s over 800 years old already, so he must have witnessed a lot of change within his life. Not to mention, his fall from grace was much more tragic than WWX’s. XL started as a prince, ascended to a god, then fell all the way down to a homeless street performer/scrap collector.
He lost all his powers, and for the majority of those 800+ years, he had no one to rely on other than himself and his physical abilities (which given, is still a quite a bit better than a normal mortal’s).
So XL is also a survivor. But his experience should put him higher than WWX since he experienced a greater change, right?
Theoretically, yes. But in XL’s life, there were a few low moments where the only reason he didn’t die was because he’s immortal. XL’s survival is partially thanks to his immortality and godhood. While those moments technically don’t really matter when considering whether or not he’ll survive in the modern world, I’m just being very picky since between the two of them, it’s a very, very close race (basicaly a tie, if I’m being honest with myself).
But of course, both XL and WWX had experiences that are way too extreme to be comparable to survival in the modern world, but their experiences do go to show how well they adapt.
Now, I want to explain why the others didn’t make the podium because they would seem to qualify, right?
Not really.
See, Shen Qingqiu is a modern man in the first place. But he sucked at living. If I were to rank everyone from most likely to least likely to adapt, SQQ would probably be dead last. First of all, he was barely able to survive despite being born there. And then, he’s spent half a century in ancient China with cool spiritual powers, fame, and a housewife who worships the ground he walks on. If you were to plop him back into the modern world, I really don’t have much hope for him. He has no sense of self-preservation.
So why didn’t Luo Binghe or Hua Cheng make the list if trials and tribulations are what they had to go through to prove they’re able to survive? Yes, LBH and HC both underwent very drastic transformations that was filled with pain and blood and difficulties.
But if you consider why they underwent this suffering, you’ll see why they didn’t make the list. Both of them had the goal of growing stronger so they can take care of their significant others. Both of them rely on their powers and being powerful. XL and WWX were completely powerless and forced to survive.
And then, no offense to our Lan-Er Gege, but he’s kinda just floating around in the middle. He gets some pity points, but there isn’t much to say about him honestly.
