Ethan and MC become godparents for Baby Hudson in my hc and nobody will ever change my mind 🥺
As sad as that whole incident was, it’s one of my favourite parts of OH. The way they worked together, them both seeing a different side to each other, going to look for the toy frog, staying in the NICU all night together, catching feelings. It was definitely one of the catalysts for Ethan and MC’s relationship imo

For Heaven's Sake (1926), one of the great Harold Lloyd comedies, was partly filmed at the corner of Hudson and Hollywood Blvd.
Extra trivia about this spot:
Stan Laurel lived in the Hillview, located on the southwest corner, when he first moved to town.
Today the southeast corner features a mural of the classic Hollywood starlet Dolores del Rio.

Ha! I was so curious how they would change the gum wrapper joke (vending machine) in Spanish. The English one wouldn't make sense. I love what they went with:

Colmo means like a breaking point or a final thing that makes the situation worse.
Dolores is a name (as you all know) that means pains in Spanish. Remedios is also a name that means remedies.
"See? This one is even a medical joke. What is the breaking point of a Doctor?”
“That his/her wife is named Dolores/Pains and his/her daughter is named Remedios/Remedies"

Pairings: Ethan Ramsey x Victoria Clarke
Word Count: 1.5k
Summary: Luke and Lily get to know Ethan Hudson
Rating: Teen
Category: Fluff, Angst
Tumblr media
Ethan was grateful for the large trolley as he lifted the Ramsey’s suitcases onto it. He had always managed to travel light whenever he went away but now he had a wife and two kids, it was like they packed for the entire world.
Ethan and Victoria were sharing a suitcase although Victoria’s had packed more for her whereas Ethan was able to keep his belongings to a respectable size.
“How far away do they live Daddy?” Luke asked as they made their way to the rental car.
“About half an hour. Are you excited to see Ethan?” Ethan smiled as he lifted Luke into the car and put his seatbelt on.
“Yeah! But I don’t really remember him.” Luke replied.
“You won’t unfortunately. But hopefully you’ll remember this visit more. Ethan is very excited to see you.” Victoria smiled climbing into the car.
“How does Daddy know him?” Lily asked.
“Daddy was friends with Ethan’s Mom. She used to live in Boston.” Victoria said.
“So does she live out here now?” Lily asked.
Victoria and Ethan shared a look. They were definitely too young to know the full truth.
“It’s a little bit more complicated than that. One day you will learn about it.” Ethan said.
“Why is Ethan named after you Daddy?” Luke asked.
“Ethan’s Mom decided on that.” Victoria replied.
“She sounds like a good friend.” Lily smiled.
“Yeah.” Ethan smiled sadly although the twins didn’t really notice.
The car pulled out of the airport car park and onto the main road.
“Are you excited to be back?” Victoria turned to Ethan.
“Yeah. It was a shame we couldn’t see him last year so we have some making up to do.” Ethan said.
“I still can’t believe the twins came down with a cold. We had such bad luck that week. What are your plans with him?”
“Alma tells me he wants to go see a movie so I thought I’d do that with him tomorrow.”
“That sounds good. Luke and Lily are excited to get to know him more.”
“I remember how fascinated he was with them as babies. Dolores would be so proud of him.”
Victoria took his hand and squeezed it affectionately. “She would. He’s happy and enjoying life. That’s all she could ever want for him. And you’re a part of making sure he’s growing up knowing who his Mom was.”
“You’re right.” Ethan smiled.
“Look Lily! That cloud looks like a giraffe!” Luke pointed out the window.
“Mommy told me that Daddy is a giraffe because he’s so tall!” Lily giggled.
“I can hear you, you know.” Ethan said.
“Oops.” Lily covered her mouth giggling.
“They’ve been listening to you too much.” Ethan pretended to glare at Victoria.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Victoria laughed.
They arrived at Alma’s house in no time, pulling onto the drive and stopping the car. The front door opened and little Ethan came running out, a big grin on his face.
“Uncle Ethan!” Little Ethan grinned as he ran towards Ethan’s outstretched arms.
“Hello little man! You’ve gotten so big since I last saw you!” Ethan smiled as he hugged his little namesake. “How have you been?”
“Good! School is out for the summer and the weather is great! I’m so happy you’re here!” Little Ethan smiled.
“Me too buddy. Guess who else is here?”
“Auntie Vicky!” Little Ethan smiled giving Victoria a hug.
“Hello Ethan! It’s so good to see you!” Victoria smiled. She gestured to Luke and Lily who were stood behind her legs, shy smiles on her face. “You remember Luke and Lily? They’re a bit shy.”
“Hi Luke. Hi Lily.” Little Ethan smiled. He held out a hand and they high fived him giggling.
“Hi Ethan.” Luke smiled.
“You’re really tall!” Lily said.
“My Aunt Alma says I get it from my Mom. I have loads of cool toys in the living room! Do you want to play with them?” Little Ethan asked.
Luke and Lily looked up at Victoria and Ethan who nodded and they grinned as they ran into the house following little Ethan into the living room.
“He’s been waiting all day for someone to share those toys with.” Alma laughed as she stepped out onto the driveway.
“Luke and Lily couldn’t wait to come here. How are things Alma?” Ethan replied giving her a hug.
“They’re good. Daniela and her family will be coming over later too. The kids can’t wait to meet Luke and Lily.” Alma smiled.
“That sounds great. Luke and Lily have been looking forward to this trip.” Victoria said.
“So have we. Although I do have one thing to share.” Alma said as they entered the house and she lowered her voice. “Daniela and I decided to tell Ethan about Dolores. He noticed the pictures of her around the house and kept asking who she was. We felt that now was the right time.”
Ethan’s eyes widened as he looked at Victoria. “How did he react?”
“He was confused, naturally. He always thought I was his Mom and I can’t blame him for that. He never really understood what we meant when we said ‘your Mom would be so proud of you.’ But since telling him he wants to know all about her. We haven’t told her how she died. If it’s not too much trouble, I thought if he started asking you questions, you might be able to provide some answers? He knows that you know her.”
Ethan looked at Victoria unsure. She nodded her head, giving him a small smile and a gentle squeeze of the hand.
“Of course. And he couldn’t have asked a better person.” Ethan smiled.
Alma smiled back. “Thank you. It means a lot.”
They walked into the living room and sat down on the sofas. Alma went into the kitchen to make a drink.
“Ethan has a lot of cool toys Mommy!” Luke said looking at Victoria.
“He does.” Victoria laughed.
“And books too! My Mom bought some for when I was older.” Little Ethan grabbed one off the shelf.
“Your Mom seems really nice.” Lily said.
Little Ethan looked up in shock, his eyes wide. “She’s not my Mom! My Mom’s dead!” He dropped the book, stood up and ran out of the room.
Ethan headed after him whilst Victoria moved to sat on the floor.
“Did I upset him?” Lily asked, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
Victoria pulled Lily into a tight hug, pressing kisses to the top of her head. “Little Ethan learnt something about his Mom recently that he didn’t know before. It’s not your fault Lil.”
“What happened to his Mom?” Luke asked.
Victoria wrapped an arm around Luke and pulled him closer. “She went to heaven. And little Ethan has been looked after by Alma, his aunt.”
“Is that why he ran off?” Lily asked.
“It’s still new to him so he’s trying to take it all in.” Victoria replied.
In the kitchen, Alma was comforting little Ethan as he ran into her arms.
“Lily doesn’t know anything Ethan. Neither does Luke, they’re too young.” Alma said.
“Like I was?” Little Ethan looked up at Alma.
“Exactly.” Big Ethan smiled as he walked into the kitchen and laid a gentle hand on little Ethan’s shoulder.
“What was my Mom like?” Little Ethan asked sitting at the kitchen table.
“Your Mom was a lovely person. She always knew how to make people laugh. I met her at the hospital. She was my first patient as an intern.” Ethan smiled.
“Really?”
“Yes. And I know she is watching over you with a big smile on her face. She would adore you to pieces.”
“I can show you some home videos of your Mom Ethan if you’d like that?” Alma suggested taking a seat opposite little Ethan.
Little Ethan nodded. “Yes please. I just wish she was really here.”
“I promise that we’ll make sure you know all about her. You can ask any time. Myself, your aunt, even Ethan. We’ll do our best to answer all the questions you have.” Alma said.
“And you know you can talk to me or Auntie Vicky anytime.” Ethan smiled.
“That’s right.” Victoria smiled as she walked into the kitchen with Luke and Lily.
“I didn’t know about your Mom Ethan. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you sad.” Lily said in a quiet voice, holding onto Victoria’s hand.
“It’s okay. I’m sorry too. I didn’t mean to scare you.” Little Ethan smiled. He stood up and held his arms out, Lily walked over and hugged him.
“Can I get a hug too? I didn’t do anything wrong!” Luke said trying to wade his way in.
“Luke…” Victoria said in a stern voice.
“Of course.” Little Ethan laughed and wrapped an arm around Luke.
“Well I’m glad that’s sorted.” Alma laughed.
“Indeed. I hope you know those todays aren’t going to play with themselves.” Ethan said out loud.
The kids broke apart and ran back into the living room laughing.
“I’m glad he knows the truth. It was best for him.” Alma smiled.
“And he’ll learn much more as he gets older.” Ethan replied.
“Exactly. We’ll all make sure of that.” Victoria said.
Little Ethan would learn just how important his Mom was to everyone. And they would make sure her memory lived on.

I thought I’d explore a bit more of Dolores, so here are the twins meeting little Ethan
We know that Dolores had more than one sister so I gave her the name Daniela for this

And they talked long into the night...
Tumblr media
I commissioned my first Ethan & Sawyer art piece from the amazing @bayleedrawsx! And it's just darling.🥰 I love it so much!
I've been replaying the Dolores chapter to prepare for the next part of my Intern Year series and I really wanted to capture this moment from when Ethan and Sawyer stayed with baby Hudson all night. In their story, this is when their attraction for one another became more than just skin-deep. 💕

Hey there! Time for an ask! :)
Is there something your MC is obsessed with that drives their LI crazy? What about in reverse, is your LI obsessed with something that may make your MC just lose it?
Thank you! :)
Jerz! Oh my God, this has been a long time coming. I'm so sorry it took me ages to respond, so here's a fic to hopefully make up for all of this!
Ain't No Rest For The Wicked
Ethan and Alma Hudson have a heart-to-heart conversation. Meanwhile, back at home, Jane teaches all the right things to a young Ethan Hudson, but at the wrong time.
Characters: Ethan Ramsey, Jane Fletcher, Alma Hudson, Ethan "Eddie" Hudson from Open Heart.
WC: 2.5k | General Audiences
(A/N at the end!)
Tumblr media
"I don't know. Is it really that bad that I am -- a bit of a messy botanist?" Ethan asked.
Alma Hudson shrugged. They'd just gone out on a little lunch catch-up after a long time and Ethan had rather wanted it to be private. Just the two of them ruminating about Dolores, how Ethan Hudson - now aptly nicknamed Eddie to avoid the mix-up was coping with elementary school - it had definitely been a good six years and it was almost as if everything around Ethan had changed. New houses in the boulevard, new families, new friends and yet, he still worked at the same hospital.
"I don't know. It has been a while since we lived together." Ethan said. "Jane accepted when I asked her if she was comfortable moving into my apartment for a brief period of time but I believe it is -- a terrible idea. I seem to be doing something wrong with my archiving. There's boxes everywhere, not enough time to order them all and files on coffee tables."
"Ethan, if Jane's only pet peeve of you is your messiness, that's just called being human. Nobody's one hundred percent clean." Alma shook her head.
"It isn't a pet peeve, so to speak. She is understanding. I believe it just annoys her. She doesn't say much and sort of silently scrapes it up when I'm not looking but -- it is a problem, isn't it? An unaddressed problem only progresses into something more."
Ethan took a sharp turn and slowed down near the school zone.
"That's Eddie's school."
"Newberry Elementary." Ethan read the name.
"They're really good. Good at disciplining him. They also have a STEM program for gifted kids. Though I think Eddie is just -- into making trouble and causing chaos. Get a quick kick of adrenaline. He's still a kid."
"Well, I remember when I was one. Then I met Jane."
"Oh?"
"If she's got a problem with my messiness, I have a problem with her -- erm -- bad ideas, I'd say. The other day, we had purchased a rather long table for the dining room and it made the salt dispenser far out of reach and instead of perhaps, using your hands to lift the shakers and use them, she got a model train to do it. It left dent marks on the table, didn't do well with me but -- there's the compromise right? I believe she didn't get enough of an adrenaline kick as a kid and is now cramming her summer bucket list of inventions into one whole -- life."
"That has to be fun, right?" Alma asked.
"It is, like when the time she developed a catapult that didn't make me want to go all the way to get my car keys. However there are drawbacks. Like the time she developed a catapult and in place of the keys, there was a large -- sort of belt hanging from the hook and well, the catapult being powered by electricity, ended up spinning about and causing a mess. It was an even bigger mess because Jane left it all night, powered on and didn't bother introducing an insulating column and it -- it's best if we don't talk about it further."
"She's definitely a lot --"
"Yes, that she is."
"-- I was going to say different but you've dated many different people before." Alma said. "Sorry, it isn't my business to pry--"
"No, no. Alma you're family. I trust you with everything." Ethan offered her a kind smile. "I guess it's always a first to sort of share a roof with someone who just really enjoys creating new things. It's also a pain. It's easier to clean up paperwork and Jane laments about it all the time, when I see her make smoke bombs for fun or incredibly complicated machines that transcend the whole entire living room - it is a complete menace to live with that."
"Of course, of course. Have you tried talking about it?"
"I don't know. I really don't -- mind it as long as it isn't noisy or messy. Even if it is messy, she pulls the "you're as messy as I am" card and -- at this point I don't know who's supposed to set a better example for the other." Ethan shrugged.
"I'll tell you one. Eddie loves you both. He loves talking about you and listening to stories and -- maybe it's a good thing Jane is babysitting him. Maybe they'll connect. It's always hard for a kid like Eddie to socialise. He looks up to you, that's an ineffable fact but generally, he's just -- restraint towards extended family. But you, he looks up to you. He doesn't know what he wants to be yet. In the whole dinosaur, astronaut phase, but -- you've inspired him. And if there's ever a Show and Tell, you best believe he's going to run up to your door and ask you for your sthethoscope."
"I love him too." Ethan said. "Dolores was -- family. She was like the sister I never had and she sort of -- filled this gaping hole in my soul and I never say that about anyone, at all. Eddie is a great kid. He'll do a lot of amazing things someday."
"I hope so. He's been in a rough patch lately. Bad grades. Been bullied too."
"Oh no."
"Yeah. Newberry isn't -- completely bully-free as they make it out to be. He's trying really hard. I just want him to have a good childhood and -- if things ever go south for me, you're his godfather."
"Alma, I appreciate the gesture but nothing will happen to you."
"Ack, you doctors are always so optimistic. Look at me, Ethan. I'm forty eight and I'm raising a five year old. By the time he reaches high school, I'd be sixty one. And college. Who's going to put him through that? I'd be retired by then and I wouldn't be able to be there for him, because -- I pull my back out quite often than before and it's just a downward spiral from now. I just need you to vouch for me, yeah?"
Ethan paused.
"You're forty one, Ethan. Jane, I presume is -- thirty eight, I'd expect? Promise me you'll help Eddie get through if I'm ever not there." Alma said, her right hand on Ethan's left hand. She gave it a small squeeze, expecting some assurance.
"I promise. I won't let him -- be thrown to the wolves. He'll have me whenever he wants me to be there for him."
Alma smiled at him. It was as if a weight had escaped her shoulder and she could count on Ethan and Jane, even though they were a rather strange family to have for Eddie. A doctor who dabbled in research and possibly Dr Frankenstein herself wasn't an ideal environment for a growing college boy, should Alma miss his formative years due to any ailment she might face. But it was just crazy enough to work. She was happy for Ethan, having found a relationship perhaps in the most unexpected of places. She was happy for Jane, who was the cool Aunt figure that Eddie would need in his life and she was just so utterly grateful.
This was about the time when they heard screeching noises, which weren't from the tyres. Alma exchanged a look with Ethan and the latter stepped on the pedal, crossing the road and into the street where Alma and Eddie lived. There was a large backyard overlooking a mass patch of unincorporated land and the worst had already dawned on Alma. Of course, Boston didn't have criminal classes, but what if they'd taken Eddie hostage? What if they'd set fire? The worry only grew larger and larger and by the time Ethan helped Alma out of the car, as the two rushed to their large backyard, they found Jane and Eddie in protective gear.
"What -- is going on?" Ethan panted.
"Aunt Alma! Aunt Alma! Aunt Jane taught me some really cool tricks! We set things on fire! She told me it was -- erm -- pyro-- pyrotech something! And it was so cool! And we also made powder rockets! Did you know that we can make one out of sugar, ben-- bento-- clay and this thing called potassium -- ni-- something? It shot up right into the air and it exploded! It exploded and it was the coolest thing ever!"
"You set fire to the backyard?" Alma shot daggers at Jane.
"No! It was safe, I promise. It's pyrotechnics stuff. You know, safe movie explosions? Eddie told me he was having a hard time at school because of this bully, Matt or something and I taught him some cool homemade explosions, just in case he ever finds himself with a PVC pipe, some bentonite clay - it's bentonite, by the way. Sort of flaky stuff. And potassium nitrate. You can find it in a chem lab, your school would have tons of them and a bit of powdered sugar. Of course, I wouldn't let Eddie play with matchsticks, so we sort of made a large matchstick holder for him to set the rocket on fire and --"
"BOOM!" Eddie said, throwing his head back and laughing.
For a moment, there was nothing but silence.
"He's fine. Unarmed." Jane said. "And technically we aren't breaking any laws. We can't transport this stuff around and that's it. Making it and igniting it on sight is perfectly safe if you know what you're doing."
"You don't know what you're doing!" Alma hissed, as she fussed over Eddie.
"Aunt Alma, but Aunt Jane has a degree in chemistry! She said it's perfectly safe!"
"Well, you are not making explosives at school to fend off bullies!"
"But that would be totally rad though. Dude-" Jane interrupted. "Next time, sneak a firecracker into his backpack, yknow, small ones and --"
"No, no! You are not teaching him anything!"
"Or you could make one of those small hobbyist explosions. Just get a soda bottle. Fill it with aluminium and detergent, give it a good shake or two and if you're feeling really daring, I'll teach you how to insert a fuse in and light it up for a lot more oomph. There's of course, your classic vinegar and baking soda but that's boring. Try getting Coke and Mentos and sort of sneak it in his locker and -- oh wait, hold on, I'll teach ya how to make a flamethrower. It's easy. You'd probably need an empty fire extinguisher and fill it up with some gasoline, pressurise it, y'know make it all compressed and nice and cosy and then -- soak em with some gas, put in the nozzle and whatnot and light em on fire and boom, flamethrowers AND--"
"That is ENOUGH! Eddie, come with me--" Alma took him to the house.
Throughout their conversation, Ethan had not piped up once. Now, he drew in closer, arms crossed against his chest with a sort of stiff feeling.
"You taught him how to -- explode things."
"He's a kid. A kid's gotta learn fire."
"Jane--"
"I'm sorry. I know. I know we're against having kids but -- I just wanna help a kid grow, you see?"
"But explosions?"
"They're cool."
"They can blind someone."
"Still cool. It's chemistry in action. Cool chemistry. A kid needs their chemistry set. Work things. Break things. Set things on fire. Where's the excitement, Ethan? How is Eddie ever going to learn? I hated school so much because there were bullies and half of them were teachers. I hated going there because -- I just -- I couldn't stomach it. The mundane. It's just not cool. Not cool at all."
"Ethan is still a child."
"I know."
"And -- Alma has insisted we take care of him when she reaches her sixties. I really want to -- gain her confidence."
"Yeah, yeah, fair enough." Jane stretched her arms. "I'm sorry about all of this. He was excited. I kind of understood him. It was as if I was a kid again, you know? Hugo and I would be at the workshop everyday, just fiddling with tools and stuff. We'd drill holes just for fun and play with matchsticks because we were ostracised. The both of us. And high school made it worse. I just don't know how to tell you, Ethan."
"No, I understand, I really do-- but next time, maybe you can wait until he's old enough to understand how fires work. Or maybe old enough until he's able to read full length books about botany."
"Who said anything about botany?"
"I've got plenty of books lying at home." Ethan shot a smirk. "You know, the ones you deem messy?"
"Oh no, you're not competing for his attention--"
"He is going to have the greenest thumb in the whole city of Boston and I am going to ensure he learns all of it with some practical gardening lessons thrown in for good measure."
"I'll teach him advanced pyrotechnics and he's going to be making gunpowder in his chem lab before he can learn algebra."
"I'll teach him everything about botany and agriculture and this land, this very land you're standing on right now, will turn into the most beautiful greenhouse ever within months."
A pause.
"I feel like we might be making him into a comic book villain." Jane said.
"Who just so happens to know all the natural poisons found in nature." Ethan added.
"Maybe he should stick to cartoons for now, yeah?"
"Of course, of course. And ice cream. That's what kids like, right?"
"God, we are terrible at this. What would we ever do if -- Eddie actually comes and lives with us? After Alma's retired?"
"I suppose it's not too late to crack open those parenting books." Ethan supplied, glumly.
The two of them exchanged a short hug; Jane's face buried into his hair and Ethan against her shoulder.
"We are going to be good at this. It isn't much about Eddie's own intrinsic character, rather his upbringing and we're always going to be there in little Ethan's life, so there's always room to improve and evolve. Still am not used to calling him -- Eddie. How did Ethan evolve into Ed? Ed sounds boring. Eddie sounds -- juvenile. Almost kiddish. Perhaps we can address him by his middle name. Anyway, we are going to be there in that little boy's life and we're going to learn how to be a good uncle and aunt."
"A cool aunt, by the way. He told me that. You're the boring doctor one."
"No, I believe he said he specifically wanted to be a doctor. Just like his uncle." Ethan adjusted his blazer. "He looks up to me."
"Sure he does." Jane said, returning the smirk he'd sent her way not too long ago. "Setting off firecrackers and making them yourself is a lot more boring than, say, studying plant leaves for a hobby. Sure. Sure. Let's pretend even half of that is true."
"Oh can it." Ethan chuckled. "Also, it couldn't have killed you to teach me something useful. Would've used it on Leland when I had a chance."
"Oh yeah? I would've loved all that plant knowledge before I got absolutely wasted and hungover and then you tell me that blah blah blah plants have medicinal properties and can cure a headache."
"You're the worst." Ethan couldn't control his smile.
"You're terrible yourself." Jane exhaled, between peals of laughter.

A/N:
Thank you so much Elsa for the prompt! I'll admit I was in a really bad Open Heart slump because I didn't know where to start or how to even, progress their story. For a while I'd just given up on it and then, I remember your Ask and boom, it all just sort of falls in place. It's silly, it's just utter foolishness and hopefully brings a smile to your face.
Jane and Ethan sort of remind me of Rosa/Pimento and Jake/Amy from Brooklyn 99 and Jane's totally the Pimento/Jake in the situation and it sort of helps me because Adrian Pimento is one of my favourite characters from sitcoms in general and I kind of see a lot of his quirks and chaos in Jane.
Ethan feels like a mix of an excited Amy with the organisation and filing and all those strict restrictions he gives himself while having the personality of Rosa, if that makes sense.
And also I went down a rabbit hole of chemistry related videos, so -- don't blame me for translating my hyperfixations into fiction lol. I wish I could recreate at least half of the stuff Jane's got upto, but that would likely get me arrested or worse, kicked out from the country jk jk no, but still, you get the idea.
Okay I'm rambling. I'll see you guys soon! Thank you for reading!

Hii 🥰
I just wanted to ask you how would your MC react if someone was turned down at the hospital for any reason?
Hey there! Thanks so much for the ask, dear!
Casey/Kaycee found their motivation to become a physician based on their own history. Rose, C/K's mother, was very ill when she was a child, and the family did not have much money or adequate health coverage. She knew firsthand how inequitable the American healthcare system is, and she wanted to change it. So, she would not be happy, and she'd move heaven & earth to get them the care they needed. (Honestly, she even did that in canon.)
In my Ethan/Kaycee world, Kaycee eventually leaves Edenbrook and establishes the Dolores Hudson Family Clinic to provide healthcare to those with little or no means. In time, Ethan joins her, and they expand to have 4 clinics (2 in Boston, one in Philly - her hometown - and Providence - his hometown).
In Tobias/Casey's world, the couple moves to DC where Casey continues practicing medicine but is also a lobbyist for healthcare reform. Eventually, she and Toibas begin a family practice with a hybrid approach that ensures 50% of their patrons are those who could not otherwise obtain healthcare.
So, my girl(s) would be upset - and do something about it.
Thanks for asking! :)

Satellite (Ethan x MC)
Book: Open Heart, book 2 Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Lilac Allende) Word count: 1K Warning: None Prompt:   31. "thank you for being in my life" Premise: She comes to his aide when he is stuck unexpectedly babysitting his godson.
A/N: Thank you, anon, for sending this prompt. And I’m sorry it took so long!
Tumblr media
Lilac tried to push down the trepidation that resulted from standing at that one particular door on the fifth floor. The sliver of rationality that managed to peek through reminded her that it was just Ethan. There was nothing to be nervous about.
Except there was.
Lilac was supposed to be keeping her distance unless it was work-related. It was part of his carefully crafted "reset." Lovestruck, weak, and a little pathetic, she found any excuse to seek him out anyway. If she couldn't touch him, at least looking at him should suffice.
It was never enough though, no matter how diligently she engraved the details of his handsome face to her memory.
Breaking out of her reverie, she cleared her throat, knocking on the door.
“Busy,” was the brusque reply from inside.
“Sorry, Doctor Ramsey, I'll just come back later.”
“Rookie?”
“Yes?”
“Come in.”
Nothing could've prepared her for the sight that greeted her. Ethan's tall frame—impossible to miss in the empty office— stood by the window, his posture so rigid, Lilac was convinced it could break through bricks. And in his arms, looking out of place and angled quite awkwardly, was a baby.
When she recovered from her shock, she laughed. Ethan's helpless expression soured and it only made her laugh harder.
“I'm glad my predicament amuses you,” he said dryly.
“I'm sorry,” she offered, trying her best to reign in her laughter. When she regained her composure, she added, “You just look like you’re trying to hold a football.”
“I wouldn’t know how to hold one of those.”
“That's why I said trying.”
“Hrm.”
Biting back another wave of laughter, Lilac focused her attention on the rosy cheeked baby in his arms. Big, bright brown eyes glanced up at her curiously as she approached.
“Who’s this handsome little man?” she asked in a sing-song voice.
“Ethan Hudson,” Adult Ethan provided helpfully. “Alma is in Boston to finalize the sale of Dolores's house. She had a lot on her plate, as you can imagine. So I offered to help with the baby.”
“That's so nice of you, Ethan.”
With all humor gone, Lilac was unable to help the unbridled admiration in her voice. It caught his attention because those striking blue eyes fixed on her, paralyzing every limb in her body. A traitorous blush rose up her neck, burning hotter in the prolonged pause.
“Yes, well…” he said, tearing his eyes away from her at last. “Just don't tell anyone.”
Lilac recovered.
“You're worried people will find out you're a big softie deep down?”
“Terrified,” he returned without missing a beat. “It'll ruin my reputation.”
The baby's legs flailed in the air perched on Ethan's forearm as he was.
“It's a wonder you haven't dropped him.”
“You presume to be better at this?”
“I don't presume. I know I'm better.”
Lilac peered at the wiggling baby, tilted so awkwardly on Ethan's arm that the poor thing was probably unsure what to do. Little Hudson looked as though he was deciding that crying was the appropriate reaction because his tiny nose scrunched up. Ethan noticed too and raised his dark brows in alarm.
“You want to hold him like this,” Lilac explained calmly, gently taking the baby from his arms. With careful but swift maneuvers, she positioned Hudson securely in her arms. She bounced him slightly, eliciting a bright smile from him.
“Perfect. Problem solved,” Ethan declared, heading back toward his desk. “Now, if you’ll excuse me—”
“Not a chance,” she said, blocking his path. “You're going to learn how to properly hold this child if it takes us all day.”
Ethan raised his brows at her, impressed.
“You'd make a formidable Attending.”
“Maybe I'll take your job someday,” she quipped. “Now, I'm going to give him back. Carefully turn him to face you, one forearm supporting his bottom and your free hand supporting his head. Got it?”
Ethan nodded and successfully followed her directions. The baby smiled widely at Ethan, taking advantage of the proximity to his face and smacking his tiny hands against his bearded jaw. The handsome doctor chuckled, swaying on his feet for the child’s benefit.
“This is nice,” Ethan commented after a while.
Lilac, for her part, forced herself to nod. The sight of the devastatingly handsome Doctor Ethan Ramsey with a baby was too much for her brain to properly process. Privately, she lamented the fact that he said children weren’t in the cards for him. He would have made an excellent father.
Ethan’s heavy gaze settled on her.  As he watched her, something glimmered behind the blue of his eyes. He watched her with as much intensity as he did on that balcony in Miami, right before he kissed her.
“Thank you,” he said at last. His lips parted as though he wished to add something else. When he didn't, Lilac nodded.
“Don't mention it.”
Hudson babbled loudly, as though offering his thanks too. Both doctors watched him as he happily bounced on Ethan’s arm, his tiny fingers playing with the ID badge perched on Ethan’s chest. Watching him healthy and happy made Lilac think of Dolores. She lived on in her son, her own infectious smile mirrored on the tiny face.
Before she could help it her gaze wandered up to Ethan. She froze when she realized he had been watching her quietly, that same unidentifiable look from before in his expression. Staring at those intense, piercing eyes felt like staring straight at the sun in that moment, and so Lilac glanced away.
“Thank you for being in my life.”
The words were like a whisper, so quiet that she almost missed them. And when she did recognize them, Lilac almost  believed he was speaking to his friend's son. Until she glanced up to find him staring directly at her.
“You've done so much for me this past year,” he continued. “I could never repay you.”
“You never have to.”
“I know.”
Something unfurled in the space between them as blue eyes held hers—something that had grown impossible to ignore in the last year, something that had taken root on the night they first watched over Dolores's son.
A tiny shriek of amusement broke the spell. Hudson had gotten hold of Ethan's stethoscope and brandished it over his head with gusto. Still dazed, Lilac laughed as she watched him.
“Looks like someone else is in the running for your job, Doctor Ramsey.”
“Hm,” he said, pulling his chin out of the crazed path of the spinning stethoscope. “His technique is sloppy, but marginally better than most interns these days.”

Dolores - Part 2: Ethan Hudson
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan x F!MC
Warnings: cursing and mentioning of death
Casey runs through the hospital entrance only to find Ethan alone in the waiting room.
"Dr. Ramsey? What happened? Where's Dolores?" He is quiet for a long moment before he looks at her. "Dolores had a seizure. Full eclampsia. We had no choice but deliver the baby. It's fifty-fifty he'll survive the night." "And Dolores?" "She died." A lumps forms in Casey's throat, tears dwell in her eyes. "Dr. Ramsey, I'm so..." "I'm fine." He says and stands up, walking away from her without another word or look.
Casey stands outside Dolores' room, when she sees the stuffed frog. She takes it, clutching it to her chest and heads out making her way to the neonatal ward. She steps to the incubator with the tiny newborn. Her heart clutches when she reads the nametag: Ethan Hudson. An attending appears. "Can i help you?" "The baby's mother was my patient. She got to name him?" "She told me just as she was rushed to the O.R. The poor thing. We'll know more in the morning." "Do you mind if I sit with him tonight?" "Feel free." Before she goes, Casey asks. "Can i give him this? His mother wanted him to have it. It's been sterilized." The attending smiles at her. "Go ahead."
Casey places the frog next to the baby. "Here you are, little tadpole. Mommy's still with you." She sits down on the couch next to the incubator, stroking his fingers with a gloved hand.
"What are you still doing here?" Startled she turns around to see Ethan standing at the door, his hands in his pockets. "I'm going to stay with him tonight. I hate the idea of him having to fight for his life alone." He takes a few steps. "There are plenty of doctors working overnight. If something happens, they'll be here." He wouldn't never admit it but he is concerned, the trauma of losing the first patient and the lack of rest aren’t good for her. "I know." He nods and looks at the baby, his expression gentler than she has ever seen it. "Do you mind if i joined you?" With a heartwarming smile she say: "Not at all. There‘s plenty of room here." For a while they listen to the gentle 'wooosh' of the ventilator. "You gave him the frog. Dolores would have been... She would have been pleased." Casey blinks away tears, turning her face away from Ethan so he can’t see. He notices. "The first patient I lost... was in my fourth week. I didn't make any mistakes. He had stage four metastatic melanoma. He just... fought like hell and lost. I liked him. He wasn’t much older than i am now. I knew he hadn’t long to live, but it still hit me hard." "Does it ever get easier?" Her voice is weak. "Grieving a lost patient isn’t a weakness. Good doctors should value life. For itself. I'd be more concerned if you weren’t upset." "You didn’t answer my question." You persistent little thing. "...No, I didn't. Just know... this wasn't your fault. Or mine. Or Dolores's. We all made the best decisions we could with the information we had." "But... She was my patient. She put her life in my hands." "You're right. Remember this, even when the patient is mean or stubborn. Their life is in your hands. That responsibility has to come first. Always." "Why are you so nice to me? You're usually so..." "Demanding?" Ethan stares into space, thinking... "There are doctors with unlimited patience. I'm not one of them. Energy I could use socializing, or making someone's day better, I put towards my patients. They're who I'm here for." Casey watches and listens to him, the way he talks comforts her and by his words, she remembers how different she saw him with patients, no sarcasm, no distance, a sympathetic smile on his lips. "But you're a teacher, too." "One of many, and you shouldn’t model yourself after one of us. Idolatry among physicians is absurd. We're here to teach you practical medicine. You need to find your own way of being a doctor." "But... how do I do that?" "You already are." He smiles at her.
The baby stretches. His tiny hands opening and closing. Ethan offers him a finger. He clutches it tight. "She named him after you." His eyes flash surprised as he turns to the nametag. He swallows. "I... see she did." "You must have known Dolores for a long time." "Over ten years. When I first emailed her I only meant to check in. But she was recently divorced, feeling alone, so she insisted on coffee. And then it turned into more emails and meeting once every months for Sunday roast." "She sounds like a good friend." "I didn't make friends easily when I started here, so I was always grateful to her for that." He looks at Dolores's baby, swallowing. His eyes are red. Casey looks at him and on instinct she puts her hand over his. He first flinches at the unexpected body contact, but relaxes when he looks at her small hand on top of his. He is confused cause somehow he wants to turn his hand around so he can inlays their fingers. Her touch is warm and soft and comforting. "I'm sorry this happened." He looks at her holding her gaze for a long moment. "Me too." After a few seconds he clears his throat, not trusting his feelings about her touch. "I think we need coffee." "I can get some." "No, I'll go." With fast long strides he exits the room. He wants to clear his head and put a little distance between them, not trusting himself.
The minutes tick by and at first Casey sits there in silence stroking Baby Ethan’s hand.
"Hey, little tadpole, that's it, in and out. Don’t worry, your mom will always be with you, no matter what. She loved you more than her own life and she always will. Trust me, I know, what I’m talking about. And there will be times, where you'll blame yourself for it, but nothing of this is your fault. I don’t know if we'll see each other again when you're older, but I’ll be always ready to tell you how much your mom loved you." She strokes his tiny hand while tears leave her eyes. Ethan stops a moment, not proud that he eavesdropped on her, but he also doesn't want to interrupt her bonding with the baby. Even when Baby Ethan wouldn't remember her words, this moment is important for her development as a doctor. But he also tries to get her words to put them in the picture of the mystery Casey Valentine is for him. He then enters pretending he didn't hear her words. She wipes her tears away, taking one mug from him. "Thanks", she takes a cautious sip. "That doesn’t taste like Cafeteria coffee." He smiles: "It isn’t, it’s from my private coffee machine. As soon as I got my own office, I devour to never drink this caffeinated dishwater again." Both laugh quietly. "No one knows that i have it. So--" "I won’t tell a soul."
They both settle down on the couch watching the baby and talk long into the night.
When she falls asleep he can’t help but watch her for a few moments. She looks like an angel. He smiles for a split second before he grabs a blanket to put it over her body.
"Casey... Casey, wake up." Remembering where she is, she sits up, rubbing her eyes, and looks at the incubator. Little Ethan breathes and his tiny little hands and feet move uncontrollable. "He made it!" Her smile brightens the whole room. "And he's getting stronger."
Casey looks at her phone, checking the time. "Oh crap! I have rounds in 20 minutes. I need to get a shower." He nods. "I'll sit with him a bit longer." Casey stretches and gives the baby one last stroke. "Hang in there, little one." Before she reaches the exit, he calls for her. "Casey?" She turns around, noticing how tired he looks, his hair missed and his jaw dark with stubble, but still this makes her heart flatter even more. "Thank you", he says looking into her eyes. She smiles. "No need. See you two Ethans later." With one last gorgeous smile she disappears.
