Just to be sure: the word "yaoi" can be used to talk about non-sexual situations and/or relationships, right? Like, just romance.

I wanted to say that I see a lot of people talking about how they love old men yaoi, but what really melts my heart is preteen boys yaoi. I don't know, there's something so sweet and pure about it, I just love it.

I'm obsessed with EddEddy (Edd x Eddy from Ed, Edd n Eddy) and now I'm starting to be obsessed with Henry x Ralph (HenRalph) from Horrid Henry.

On this Day in EAM history,

Lisa choo-choo-chose Ralph in 1993,

Brain complains his way through a commercial narration in 1994

Rocko uses a jackhammer to brush his teeth in 1996 (it’s an Australian thing),

Brock’s briefly retired from the Pokémon anime and replaced with a white guy in 1999,

and the Eds break reality in 2000 just by asking questions.

It’s a big day in 2005, with Lilo & Stitch going to the future, Danny thinking he’s scored with Paulina, and Jake and Rose auditioning for a school play.

And then we’ve got Ben meeting his most powerful frenemy, Kevin 11, in 2006,

and Pinkie Pie ending atheism in 2011. This is just a taste of all the episodes I could’ve listed today, it’s a pretty good one. For me, it’s a tie between Ed Edd n Eddy & Ben 10.

Visual Development & Style Considerations

As this was all about light and dark I focused on tone as a key charactersitic of my characters.

The Batman background reference I had previously discussed and its relevance to painting. This gave me the idea to revisit some Rembrandt paintings, the one below gave me some useful ideas.

The key idea I started to think about was the way shadows create a blur and how this lack of clarity is important as it is accurate to the real world. In the dark, our eyes cannot see detail, so everything begins to blur and colours mix as definition is lost. The more contrast there is, the more detail should disappear and the subject is lost in the background.

I also started to research lighting techniques and used this tutorial which explains how to break down characters into basic shapes to effectively add lighting to them

With a new understanding of lighting principles I began to sketch out my character, I wanted to use greys for my character and background as I watched the movie Frozen and thought the Trolls palette would work well for my cavemen

and I wanted my cavemen to be beefy so I refereanced Wreck-It Ralph and Baymax from Big Hero 6, especially this early drawing of the character by Shiyoon Kim

I wanted the expressiveness of Scooby Doo, Homer Simpson and the characters in Edd Ed n Eddy so started with the face with the previous referances in mind, to help me come up with some possible character differences I used the 7 Dwarfs names for inspiration but very loosely.

I developed the idea of having my characters hyperventilate as seen on the right of the drawing, as well as coming up with a new idea of having the characters hair burn off from fire and transition into a modern human. This took a lot of inspiration from sexy Squidward from Spongebob.

From this point I was happy with my characters faces and ability to express goofy emotions and emit confused grunts so I moved on to the full body shots.

I sketched out a rough character with a similar body type to Ralph and Baymax and used sculptures of Neanderthals as a reference, as I had a pretty good idea of what I hoped to create, I found this was a pretty smooth process.

As you can see I started with the rough sketch, broke it down into simple shapes and then started to colour it. I like this character design a lot. The palette of blues with a harsh red light against a background of noise worked the way I had hoped (although I didn't light the character very realistically...). Hopefully the lighting, grain density and overall contrast between character and background can change dynamically when I get to animating, but for the time being, I left this character here.

"Scratchy, Plotz, and Ralph as the Ed Boys"

This is probably the most bizzare and unusal crossover piece I've done so far, and I love it!

I had been meaning to do something involving both Animaniacs and Ed, Edd, n Eddy, two of my favorite shows. I initially thought of doing the Ed Boys as he Warners initially, but I realized these guys from fit their personalities more closely. Scratchy as a strict and knowledgeable person, Plotz as an aggressive and short tempered leader, and Ralph as the muscle and lovable oaf. ( As for the Warners, I had something else in mind for them. Something that will be posted shortly after this one)

Since these guys are pretty old on the orginal show, I had to tweak there designs so they looked a lot younger. I didn't quite get them to where they are at at adolescent ages like the Ed boys are, but young enough so it would be more believable.

I tried something a little different this around with coloring. I went for more a flat and stylized graphic style that I feel turned out okay!

Goin back to some roots with Sugar Rush.

I gave May a hat and immediately thought of baseball, so she's a Strawberry themed baseball Sugar Rusher. The reason I went with strawberry might be obvious but also fusionfall had notes on her with strawberry lipstick. I personally don't think she eats sweets often, but its either chocolate or strawberry flavoured candy. Anyway it was fun doing thsi style again.
