🍵 rumours about every one of your gw characters thank you. I want the Gossip.

HI. Cricket. the first rumour is that im going to kick your ass (this is a joke and we are friends) ok here we go:

Speculist Rinthi -

There are so many rumours about Rinthi. A reclusive member of the Priory with a mysterious research goal, and an asura who barely gets on with any other asura she’s met and whose closest-seeming friend is a norn? There are so many rumours flying around about her, especially among the younger or more easily impressed Priory members.

The most notable are that her work is something awful that the Priory is too ashamed to openly acknowledge, like… well, whatever the speaker thinks is the most awful thing in the world, usually. Often something to do with ghosts, souls, or corpses, since her assistant is a known necromancer. Another persistent rumour is that she has blackmail on Steward Gixx that she weaponises to avoid getting kicked out of the Priory for her regular various levels of insubordination and general complaining about him. This isn’t actually true – she’s not really considered a proper member of the Priory, working more on a “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” basis than an official one – but she wouldn’t mind if it was true. Mostly because it would upset Gixx.

Muni Grimgrave -

Muni’s adjacency to Rinthi means he ends up catching a lot of the same flak. Nobody’s quite sure how he helps with Rinthi’s research, so there’s a good deal of whispering about what he’s up to there. Also there’s a running bet as to whether they’re romantically involved, because apparently two people can’t just get on with their work and this place doesn’t have anything more professional to do than gossip about people’s love lives, is what Muni said the one and only time a scholar dared to ask him about it,

Egg Varserk -

Egg at first glance doesn’t seem like he has a lot to hide; to the Shiverpeaks he’s a mercanary who shows up and then leaves when the job is done, and if you know of him then you probably know that his family died in a dragon-related incident and that it’s best not to pry. In the Vigil, he’s mostly just your coworker. He works well in groups but doesn’t stick with them for very long if he can help it, which some people wonder about, but that’s generally considered his business (particularly once it’s happened a few times, where it’s clear that it’s nothing personally about anyone in particular and that he’s otherwise easy to work with).

Once Heart of Thorns comes around and he works for an extended period of time with the Pact Commander, there’s probably interest around that, but I don’t see it becoming much more than “ooh Egg’s not here, do you think he’s doing work for ~The Commander~?” He’s kind of just like. A guy. He has so much “just a guy” energy that it shuts down most rumours before they really get going.

Calydowan -

CALY… she wears a lot on her sleeve but she’s also messy in a way that’s basically a well-known secret, and as Pact Commander she’s a public figure, so. There’s a lot. Prone to, let’s call it partying hard, and tends to disappear off the radar between prolonged campaigns or Pact business, even if during it she’s largely professional. In her absences there are often claims that she’s died in a myriad of ways, ended up in jail, once that she planted her feet in the earth and turned into a tree? Which hasn’t happened yet. Calydowan likes to think she would have noticed.

There’s also the fairly regular “I had ‘relations’ with the Commander” (often true) and the slightly-less-regular “the Commander’s had an illegitimate child” (never true, and someone should explain to these folks how sylvari work). Again after HoT, I think there’s like. More about the Mordemoth-related stuff – not common, but stuff along the lines of “the Commander got taken over by Mordremoth and killed a guy and they had to restrain her”, “the Commander actually turned into a Mordrem but they cloned her with a plant cutting/just got another sylvari that looked like her and are pretending it’s the same one so we don’t freak out”, etc., closely followed by “no it’s totally true my sister’s friend’s dog’s grandmother said she was there and saw it happen stop laughing”.

Anyone close enough to Calydowan to have a chance of actually asking her already knows her enough to know it’s not true. Anyone close enough to Egg to try asking him about it already knows he’ll glare at you wordlessly until you slink away.

Orion Shadowheart -

Most rumours about Orion are regarding his and his bandmate Nyfit’s abrupt desertion of the Ash Legion – either why they did it, or where they are now. Though the latter is more “ongoing investigation” than “rumour”. They’re not the first to run off, so most of these whispers are relatively grounded in reality. The remainder of the Heart warband’s guesses are probably closest to the truth, having known both Orion and Nyfit’s particular closeness and Orion’s desire to find his sisters.

Robot hdb and mechanic/technician kim pt 2, more serious this time

@morphlingunderscore thank you for taking interest in this!!! originally i didn't have too many thoughts about it but.... Something shifted, and last night i couldn't stop thinking about it, sorry if it got a bit too long kdkdkgks i got more invested than i thought i would

Maybe he was made by Dora? As part of a prototype series of robots, i think hdb could be harrys model And maybe she even named harry just. Harry. Bc there was something about him, about how programming, that was faulty but made him special (the skills. They make him too human while not human enough) (also maybe part of his program knows he had a name but it got wiped too, and he is fixated on it, on having lost that. .... It could be kept as part of a letter in a compartment somewhere in his robotic body... Maybe even in his chest cavity... Maybe Kim finds it when having to fix something in there........ No concrete thoughts there, just a vague idea that I'm keeping here.)

At first this would be very interesting, getting herself attached to him (and i feel like it's also the thing that makes Kim so invested in him later down the line)

But. Things keep breaking, he has blackouts (maybe caused by overheating? Maybe the skills cause the overheating and/or short-circuiting?), He keeps messing up his tasks, and his system may not be fully capable of following the classic three laws of robotics all the way through. It gets exhausting, she has better projects to work on, others that can stop being prototypes, more worthy of time and resources, that will get recognition, and get her out of the place they're living in.

And so she leaves, and leaves her old lab and obsolete projects to gather dust never to be used again.

Kim, on the other hand, really just is a mechanic for the most part, but he can really work with any machine, and would know about programming and circuits and everything, having learned about this on his free time.

This interest starts properly after having moved from foster families a few times, and managing to get a mechanic to take him and teach him how it all works, getting his hands on an actual engine,tho hes always been interested even as a child, from what he could find in books.

He has his own garage now, and works on any machine you bring him, from cars to a microwave, anything that helps him pay the bills and allows him to work with things he enjoys. Also doing these kind of household appliance fixes makes him go out in search for any parts that he may need for his job, whatever's cheaper (por straight up free, of you know where to go)

I think that, like in canon, it's thanks to Kim that harry wakes up again. In this case maybe hes looking around for something and manages to shock harry in a way that his body starts right there and then? Idk too much about this kinda stuff and it's late. It could also be noise with enough vibration to make Harry's gears shift again. But as i said idk about machines I'm general nor if that makes sense/is possible)

The rest is basically this: harry helps Kim find parts, either that they can use on him or on other machines. He malfunctions more now bc both of the prevailing issues, the wipe out, and the passing of time, and Kim is willing to fix the parts he can, and understand the ones that seem to make no sense, and this, all this, new, can bring a change to Kim's monotonous life, spark something in him, also be confronted about some of his being stagnant by harry. Also the wipeout isn't a complete thing, this guy would realize Kim likes speedfreaks and would use himself as a radio to play it just to see him have a good time, for example. His skills still work with understanding humans (... Sometimes).

another way of doing this tho would be hay being made for the rcm (still Dora's creation imo). Faulty but good for all the same reasons + this robot will give you a ridiculous list of theories/keep track of evidence/of witnesses) alibis/the things that have no relation to the case you don't want him to remember but still does.

In this case one of his faults could also be in fact his memory, and it being faulty enough it had an almost full cleaning could be from people trying to delete info from it and failing. Or him doing it himself so he feels like he still has a reason for not being discarded by the rcm. And kim could still be part of the rcm but both as a mechanic and a detective, or just mechanic, or just detective on paper but with the knowledge

"Furious," Jonathan corrected. "Why the devil would you lead them here?!"

The sentient thorn in his side looked genuinely shocked. "You mean you won't help me?"

Jonathan narrowed his eyes at the intruding vigilante, stalking slowly over to pin him with presence alone against the wall, using the sizable gap in their heights to loom, menacing, over him. "And tell me, little bird… why should I?"

Despite the implied threat, Nightwing- Jonathan's personal karmic punishment made flesh- smiled cheekily up at him. "Becauuuse… I haven't sold you out to the Big Guy yet?"

Jonathan made an irritated noise deep in his throat that had the little nuisance's shoulders tensing. "That excuse won't carry forever, especially not when you've brought something just as dangerous to my front door."

Nightwing finally broke eye contact, shamed into glancing toward the floor. One gloved hand threaded vividly blue fingers through dark hair, giving it that sinfully cute fluffed look, like a startled bird trying to look brave in front of an imminent threat. "Sorry. I didn't know where else to go. If I went to my own safehouse, I'd just get boxed in. I'm not exactly supplied in there for a literal siege, you know? You, though…"

It was a fair point. Jonathan's hideouts were part chemical factory, part doomsday bunker, designed for laying low for long periods of time without tipping off the Bat… or his allies. "This will force me to relocate," Jonathan complained.

"Wellll… Not necessarily…" Nightwing sent a significant glance over at the heavy barrels lining the far wall.

"No," Jonathan snapped.

"Please?"

"I won't waste it on something like this. The materials are expensive to acquire covertly, and the formula takes time to manufacture. If your ringleader were to find me-"

"I'll just buy you more," Nightwing offered, like that solved everything. As usual, he never seemed to grasp that money could even be a finite resource, nor that there were problems unsolvable by throwing money at them.

The glower Jonathan sent his way must have been powerful, seeing how Nightwing flinched and instinctively made himself smaller.

"I could… be your lab assistant? That'd make things go faster, yeah?" He suggested hesitantly, before lighting up with an idea. "...I'd even let you test the new formula on me," he offered, sliding a hand coyly down Jonathan's arm, gently guiding his hand up, until the needle tips of his gauntlets rested on the fabric stretched across his throat. "How does that sound?"

It was… tempting. The little bird took to his formulae well, unlike his stoic mentor, but still proved challenging enough to be a worthwhile subject. Not to mention… the side effects Jonathan was becoming increasingly adept at inducing in him.

"Fine," he spat, like he wasn't eager for what had been promised him. "I'm warning you now, though- I only have the one mask capable of filtering this concoction." He tapped the filters of the mask he wore, slung around his neck, while he lifted it to fit across his face. "Do try to hold your breath."

Obediently, Nightwing sucked in a lungful of air, giving him a chipper dual thumbs-up. Jonathan twisted open the barrels, allowing the thick orange smog to spill out, almost liquid, to the floor. When he threw open the hatch of his bunker, it spilled out around his ankles in waves, encroaching on the armed goons who had been desperately trying to get through the heavy metal of the entrance too quickly for their delayed reaction time.

Rapidly, the pursuers became prey, collapsing to the ground clutching at their skin, becoming enveloped in the heavy cloud of toxin, where it only overtook them faster, their screams ringing out into the darkness.

Behind him came a small whimper. His little canary could make it no further into this coal mine.

Jonathan returned to the bunker, taking in a mouthful of filtered air. He reached for the little bird, sliding the mask off to press their lips to one another's, forcefully feeding him the fresh air like a diver rescuing a drowning man. Nightwing shuddered against him, nails digging in where he gripped hard enough to draw blood, pupils blown wide with the stirrings of fear. Part of him, in an impulse he only very barely avoided following, wanted to toss the little bird to the ground, to see him fill his lungs with the thick orange clouds and to scream himself hoarse, scrambling away from imagined monsters and raising terrified eyes to the Scarecrow looming over him, uncertain if he would provide redemption or damnation-

But, no. He shouldn't. His little bird was as much an ally as an enemy, these days, and it wouldn't do to alter their arrangement for so little.

Instead, he guided Nightwing to the wall, returning the mask to his own face, and helped the shaking boy to climb into the rafters. It was a familiar sight, by now, his little bird perching above his head, and he let himself smile fondly, knowing it was hidden behind the bulk of his mask.

"Stay high," he ordered, voice distorted by his filters. "The toxin sinks."

Nightwing gave his confirmation with a tremor in his voice he couldn't quite mask. Even so, Jonathan knew he could be trusted to keep his footing despite the toxin shivering through his lean muscles. For now, he could focus on getting the barrels resealed, preserving as much of the concoction as he could while the rest dissipated, the compounds breaking down naturally once exposed to air.

"Get moving while they're unable to follow."

"Jon, listen-" Nightwing tried, though he made it no further.

Sliding the mask from his face, he turned a curious expression up at the bird in his rafters. "What is it?"

"I- Thank you, for this. I'm sorry I dragged you into it-"

"As well you should be."

"...but it's good to know I really can trust you, after all."

A horrible judgement, really, though Jonathan didn't voice the sentiment. "...You're very welcome. Come, now. You said you have a safehouse nearby?"

"Yep!" Nightwing hopped down with a ridiculous little flair that gave Jonathan a brief view of that back-end that would be his undoing, landing with a chipper little bounce on the toes, muscle memory stronger than any toxin. "Thanks to you, I should be able to get back there with no trouble."

Jonathan mustered up a scowl. "Then why are you still here?"

Nightwing walked his fingers up Jonathan's chest, gently tugging the significantly taller man down to his diminutive height. "A kiss for luck?"

"You're a spoiled little brat," Jonathan critiqued, but gave him the kiss anyway.

He clearly needed the luck.

how to make a tumblr post (and get notes!)

Have never seen any post discuss these exact things, so i'm sharing my insights with y'all*

Use images. They don't have to be good or spectacular like this extremely coherent thing I just made. They just need to catch the eye break up dashboard monotony.

The gif search feature is an unreliable wild card at best and a NSFW eye gouge at worst, but it gives credit to the op of the gif

If you're an artist your whole post is your images, so skip to the links and tags section of this post because the rest won't help much.

-> Image Descriptions

When making a post that contains images, hover over an image and click the meatballs icon in the lower right corner of the image. Click "update description" to add a description. It isn't always necessary, but it is very courteous for a variety of accessibility reasons.

-> Text

Break up your text. Run-on sentences are standard here, lack of punctuation too, you can really do whatever you want, but avoid massive blocks of text. unless you've got a really incendiary opening line and the entire center of that granite chunk of text is actually comedy gold, hard-hitting tumblr journalism, or one of those zany confessional posts that can be followed up by the drive thru meme

break up

your text.

and go light on the ALL CAPS. save it for emphasis or when you're feeling very unhinged or saRcAStiC y'know how that goes, i don't need to explain it. this site has a very dry tone to its posts so caps are rare. also periods

Bullet points and numbered posts are good and fine. The "Chat" post option is used less often these days, but different groups found uses for it so it sticks around.

Titles Matter

they help break up text and put people at ease. they are best for informative, mature posts but can make you look like a square in more relaxed conversations. sometimes they are also great for emphasis in a comedic sh*tpost (censorship is entirely up to you, btw. you don't have to censor much on tumblr except titties and genitals).

Tumblr automatically shortens long posts now, but etiquette asks that you tag #long post if you want to avoid clogging up someone's dash. It don't matter too much though, this is the "color of the sky" site, so get used to posts being too long

That being said "READ MORE" is a fantastic feature. Use it when you want some level of privacy like "hey, only click below if you want to hear about my problems" or "click below to read my 18+ fanfic." Read more is also great in case you want to delete something forever. If a reblogged post has a read more, but op deleted the og post, that content is gone (readmore has to be on the og post at time of posting for this to work, btw; edits to og post do not span all reblogs)

the other bells and whistles like colored font or italics are helpful in improving text, but we don't really rely on them. every mode of looking at this site alters those aspects somehow so we often ignore them

Hint: People don't want to click links. We don't know where they're taking us. Most of us are on our phone and don't want to open another tab or leave the app to go on the browser. We're cozy here on Tumblr and do not wish to be whisked away (unless it's a rickroll)

Don't leave the link thumbnail to do all the work, like so

add a little sneak peak info, maybe your favorite line from the article or a reason why it's important for people to know the info on the other side of that link. Sell it!

When you're adding a link into a list, i.e. no large thumbnail just a line of text leading you to another site, try not to copy/paste the link as is

"https://......"

No one wants to click on that it's gross and scary. It's screams "meh, i'll click later if i feel like it." If the build up to the link is too good to resist ("if you want to save the orphaned puppies here's the link") then that http mess is sufficient.

Otherwise, dress your links up a little by including the title or a description of what the link goes to:

Or, if it's an informal post where you're just popping info in to back up whatever insane thing you just said, just write something like "link here" or "(x)" and hyperlink it.

-> Tags

artists, writers, and other creators: leave a tag on your creative content that makes it easy for blog visitors to see it all at once. e.g. "My work" and we click on that while on your blog and see only your works

You can have up to thirty tags on any post. All will make your post show up in searches and followed tags (it used to be only the first five tags that got you traction). However,

Please. Do not tag everything you can possibly imagine being relevant to your post because

It's called tag spam and it's against TOS

Everyone here hates that

No one is going to check all those tags ever. Someone might search one five years from now and accidentally find your post hanging out in the ether and they'll still ignore it.

Your imagination is wicked tiny because I guarantee the perfect tag is going to be something indecipherable and seemingly niche.

Follow popular tags (or at least be aware of them)

If yours is an off-the-cuff post and you don't have time to find out what a niche group is into then wing it, sure, idc. this is also the shitposting site do whatever you want

Don't put your hate in the fan tags. This is the unapologetically-like-dumb-things site and your negativity is not wanted. You can still complain, just avoid tagging to get the attention of the fans of whatever you're complaining about. That enables pvp and even nonfans will know you deserve the backlash

-> Audio & Video

clickable by nature because we all love noise and moving images so there's no special way to share posts like this. just post them with good tags and maybe a one-liner, and they'll sell themselves

Tip: it's nice to add descriptions to these too but it isn't common

Protip: if the audio is the best part of the video (e.g. a baby burps REALLY loudly and it's hilarious) please caption or tag "Unmute!"

I recently got an ask about how I made my Vere cosplay, so I thought I'd write an (overly descriptive) explanation about what I did! Note that I have very minimal sewing and cosplay experience, so it's quite possible that there are many better ways to achieve the same look.

If you're interested in recieving the pattern that I used, please DM me, and I'll send you the files. Note that the pattern is only made to my measurements(I am very tall and small chested) and I have also altered the pattern after working with it some, though not altered the PDF.

Some of my explanations won't be the most clear, I'm happy to explain more in the comments or dms- I'm just limited on the number of pictures:)

Below the readmore because u guys this is going to be a bit exhaustively long :>

The pattern pieces for the top

I got a pattern after commissioning someone on Fiverr for about $60 dollars (let me know if you want their contact info). They were not very interested in reference photos and instead wanted me to sketch the garment I needed. I made a mock-up in a day after receiving the pattern files (took me about 8-10 hours lol). I requested a few edits from the pattern maker and recieved a second pattern. From there, I made multiple mockups and edited the PDF pattern to:

- shorten the smallest sleeve

- increase the curve of the front shirt edge

- add an unofficial collar band to increase collar height

- change the angle of the piping seam to enter the armhole at much more of a slanted angle

- increase the height and shape of the side waist openings (they are still lower than is accurate).

- add a sleeve gusset bc I couldn't move my arms (the sleeves are still tough, I'd recommend altering the dark purple sleeves if you make this)

- making the floatly sleeves way more voluminous.

Here are some photos of the top. I bought a crotch snap bodysuit premade and cut it after someone helped me pin the top to it. This is to help keep the top "tucked in" to the belt without bunching, while still allowing you to go to the bathroom. There need to be snaps because I taped the top to my skin, so you don't want to pull the top off your shoulders as you would a romper.

Ok, now let's see where the pattern pieces go to the shirt:

Fabric

I used a satin fabric for this top. I chose this primarily because it looked the closest to the right color that I could find (rather than being interested in the sheen). I'd say that it kinda sucked to work with because it frays exceptionally easily, though it does look pretty. The lilac fabric is a cotton fabric that I used throughout this project to add weight and stability - the color doesn't matter. I also used a medium weight black fabric (?), Silver pleather, and lightweight interfacing.

- back of the garment was purple satin underlined with lilac cotton

- front (orange) piece was purple satin with lightweight iron on interfacing

- collar (blue) was purple satin with the lightweight interfacing not in the seam allowances.

- front (red) piece was purple satin, iron on interfacing, and underlined lilac cotton.

- black boarder on the front (green) was a thick black fabric that was in a discount bin. Highly recommend you use a thin black cotton because the thickness of this fabric gave me a lot of trouble. Interfaced the center of these pieces.

- facings for the side opening (front and back of garment) were made from the lilac fabric and interfaced with lightweight interfacing EXCEPT for the seam allowance.

- tiny sleeve (yellow) was interfaced to give it structure, but not in the seam allowances

- I really struggled with the tension on my machine so I never sewed the satin alone. On the long, dark purple sleeves I added iron on interfacing ONLY to the seam allowance to give the seam stability so I could sew it.

- the silver piping around the collar and glued onto the front is made from a silver pleather. On one hand, this sucked to work with because my strategy involves sewing through ~10 layers of it at least, which is very hard(thimble needed). BUT, If you don't use silver pleather, I'd say your silver fabric MUST NOT FRAY for you to use the techniques I used.

STEPS TO CONSTRUCT (~30-40 hours).

You definitely need to make a mock-up unless you are very experienced. I made about 4-6 (would alter one sleeve but not bother changing the other, etc).

1. Cut all pieces except for facings, black boarder, and floaty sleeves out of purple satin.

2. Cut cotton support fabric for the following pieces - back, red, gussets, side facings (4 total)

4. Cut black boarder/facing (4 total).

3. Cut and iron on interfacing - center of collar, red (not seam allowance), orange (not seam allowance), tiny sleeve (not seam alloance), black boarder/facing- only needed on the outside ones(not seam allowance). Interfacing for the side facings. If you have issues with sewing the satin, also iron on interfacing on the seam allowances, and add it to purple satin that is alone (the long sleeves).

4. Baste all underlining fabric to the purple satin by hand (back, sleeve gusset, red).

5. Stay stitch in the seam allowance all pieces

6. Zigzag stitch all pieces.

7. Lay the lilac side facing on top of the right side of front orange piece, interfacing of the facing touching the right side of the fabric. Sew together along the inner curve. Notch the seam allowance here so it can bend easier. Flip facing to the wrong side of the garment. Iron flat. Pull the notches to the facing side and understitch. Iron again. Sew the top and bottom of the facing edges into the seam allowance of the side seam of the garment and the hem of the garment so they don't flop as much. Do the same thing on the the second orange piece (mirrored). Then do this twice, once for each side curve on the back piece.

8. Yayyy now it's time to attach the black edge. Choose your prettiest of the two of each mirrored piece to be the outside ones. Hem the longer edge of all 4 black facing pieces. Lay the facing, right side facing up, on top of the right side of the orange piece along the front hem. Sew directly on top of your hemming stitches so it is attached about an inch in. Try to not go out of the hem stitches at all. Then, lay a second facing on TOP of the facing u just sewed, wrong side facing up. Sew along the edge through all three layers. Notch this seam. Flip the top facing to the inside of the garment and iron flat. Understitch the inside facing. Iron again. Sew along the black facings inside the seam allowance of the top edge of the orange piece. Below are my notes to myself about this if they would help you LMFAO.

9. U can hem the orange piece now if you want to, I chose to not bc there is sooo much more stuff to do!!

10. Hand baste the red piece to your completed/with facings orange piece along the bottom edge of the red piece/top of orange. You're gonna have to rip this out later but you need to add the collar and measure the length of the piping that will go here and it needs to be attached to do this.

11. attach the back of the top at the shoulder seam. you can also pin or baste the side seams now under the arm hole but note that the size will be really different here with the sleeve gores later added. this turns it into a vest yayy its taking shape

12. iron all the seams u got going on

13. Hem the interior edge of the red pieces so that the collar can attach over it. Use a basting stitch bc you're going to have to undo part of this later 🙃

13. make the collar. tbh I'd recommend watching a tutorial for this, it is pretty similar to any men's dress shirt, especially a mandarin collar. sew the collar along the neckline of the garment.

14. Measure from the side seam under the arm, along the hem of red all along the back collar, to the other side seam under the other arm to see how long your piping needs to be. You can make it a bit longer than it needs to be. i chose to use piping because I couldn't find a silver cord that resembled this detail going around the collar of his shirt, and this seemed like the best solution. It would be far easier to use a silver cord if you can find it tho :). If you found cord that you liked, you could simply sew red to orange directly.

15. make the piping! This whole part is the worst part of the whole garment. You should have a thimble and strong handsewing needles. And probably pliers to pull the needle through. I cut long strips 4 of the silver pleather and bought 2 mm wide nylon cord. I then folded the strip around the cord and handsewed really close to the cord with white thread. You could machiene sew this but personally I found that it wasn't "tight" enough to the cord for me. Two of the piping strips you should cut most of the seam allowance off, the other two should be a normal amount of seam allowance on the piping.

16. Line up your 4 piping strips into a stack and measure across them to determine their width. You next want to create the ILLUSION of more piping. The way I did this was I took a wider strip of silver, the width of the 4 piping strips + one hypothetical extra piping on the top and one on the bottom and cut a strip this wide + lots of extra seam allowance that was about the length of the shirt collar. Then, I hemmed it deeply, so my hem stitches would be close to the center of the strip. There's NO cord in this piece. Then, I hand sewed this flat piece to the collar of the shirt.

17. Next, I bent my piping strips in half and marked the center points on each with a pin. I took one with long seam allowance and laid it flat so the seam allowance lay facing right, and then laid the other piping with seam allowance overlapping the previous piping facing left. Then the piping with very small seam allowance goes on top of this. Diagram crossection below, with the circles representing the cord of the piping, and = representing the orientation of the seam allowance.

In this way, the piping can be sewn into a continuous strip that is sturdy, without the seam allowance showing. I handsewed the piping pieces together, working from the center, for about 5 inches of length, snaking sideways through the cording of the piping with white thread so it's joined into one continuous strip. Then, I began to handsew this piping to the collar on top of the silver flat fake piping that u already sewed there. Make sure the center of the piping goes to the center of the collar. From there, you alternate handsewing the piping to itself into one continuous strip, and then handsewing it to the collar.

18. As you work, you're going to have to sew it along the edge of the red piece once you're done with the collar. You can initially sew it to the hem that you established before on the red piece. However, when the red piece meets the orange piece (at the black fabric) you need to undo the hem of the red piece there and cut a slit in the fabric (visible below). This is because the hem of the red piece now needs to hang down and attach to the orange piece, so you need the material. Your piping here will go between the red and orange pieces. You also need to cut your basting stitches here so u can sew it for real. You should gradually and evenly spaced - end each line of piping along the top of the orange, so that by the time you're at the armhole, only one piping line is remaining. I chose the bottom silver line on the collar to be my longest piping strip, as this matches (more) of the reference photos). Rather than sew through all 12- 14 layers (...) I found it easier to do a stairstep method. I sewed my first piping strip to the red, then I sewed my second piping to the first piping(but NOT to the red), my third piping to the second, my fourth to the third, and my orange piece to the fourth. Throw in some stitches that bridge more layers as a failsafe and be diligent here bc the structure of the garment depends on it lol.

19. Fantastic ! U made it through the hardest part! Hem the long purple sleeves. Gather the top of the floaty sleeves. Sew the inner seams of the floaty sleeves. Sew the inner seams of the 2 long sleeves together. Leave the length of the V of the gusset unsewed at the top of the sleeve seam. Hem the edge of your tiny sleeves (yellow).

Now you need to attach the sleeves. I sewedthe gauze to half the gusset by hand first. Next I handsewed the gusset to both the long sleeve and the floaty sleeves, leaving the other V half of it unattached to later put into the side seam under the arm. Next I pinned all three sleeves into the armhole of the top. Tbh ... The size of the armhole seemed wrong so I needed to pleat the top of the of the long sleeve to make it fit (😐). Then I handsewed all three sleeves on each side into the arm hole, and then sewed the gusset into the side of the garment, and then finished the side of the top's seam (where the side facings meet) by hand too. I think it'd be possible to do this by machiene but with all the layers, gathering, and difficult corners from the gusset, it was way easier to handsew it imo. Now do the other sleeve wow so fun

20. Get a silver ribbon /string and handsew the sleeve decorations in place. I've found that piercing the silver cord tends to make it get ugly and split so instead I sewed the ends down and then went around the cord like belt with belt loops. Leave a tiny amount of give here so it doesn't strangle ur arm. Try and make the other sleeve the same lol.

21. Cut EVA foam (very thin mm foam) into LONG strip for the vertical silver detailing. Handsew the Eva foam to your top where the silver detailing is. Honestly I might wait to do this until your belt is done bc the position of the bottom half of these lines depends on where your belt sits. But, the purpose of the Eva foam is that it provides a solid base for your silver fabric to glue to that will bend with the garment well and the glue won't stiffen or distort your fabric. Afterwards you'll glue it to the foam with contact cement or fabric glue (needs to be able to flex).

22. Personally I sewed snaps that connect to the chest harness on the inner black boarder because 1) this allows a bit of the weight of the harness to be taken off of your neck/collar, and 2) allows your top to be held closer to your body (lower chance of flashing people). Make sure to only sew them to the interior black facing, not showing to the other side. I also sewed tacking stiches through the interior facing (hidden in the hem stitching) to hold the interior black facing down. My harness was waistband elastic, stabilized with cotton so it's not stretchy, with velcro attaching to itself through the ring. So each side of the harness at the ring is velcro folded back onto itself after being looked through the ring.

23. I also sewed the snap crotch thing to it. You need to wear the top and the body suit and have someone pin the top so that it's pulled somewhat taut by the bodysuit. The small section between the left and right side of the top (by the bellybutton) of the waistband of the bodysuit I stabilized with cotton again because you don't want that part getting stretched out and widening over time. If you're someone who maybe doesn't have boobs or doesn't care about flashing people, you could just sew it to some shorts. The idea here is to keep it held down AND be able to use the bathroom later WITHOUT pulling all ur fashion tape off in the stall and then reapplying it each time.

One of the things I think about often with regards to Wayhaven is Rebecca's age, mostly because I think it can add a really interesting level of nuance to an individual player's/Detective's experiences within the game. From what I've seen Mishka has purposefully left it open to the player's interpretation, which I personally really enjoy and am glad for.

To me, Rebecca's age has a pretty wide window of possibilities -- she could have met Rook and had the Detective quite young, or with how career-driven she is, it could have been far later in life! And I do think those differences would shape the Detective's, the player's, and probably even Unit Bravo's impression of her just a little depending what her age is.

Edit: adding a readmore because I realize this got a bit long!

You could have a young Rebecca who had the Detective at maybe... 25 or 27, and if the Detective isn't much older than 25 themself she's only around 50 - which is a sharp contrast to a Rebecca who has an older child when she herself was older. If your Detective is 35, and Rebecca had them at 35 or even later, she could be older than 70!

You can be fit as hell at 70+ years old (and one of my favorite examples of this is Ginny MacColl, 71, mother of stunt woman Jessie Graff -- the both of whom are competing in the next season of American Ninja Warrior) but there are also physical changes a person's body experiences at that age. Bones can be less dense, muscles less elastic -- healing can take longer. Injuries can be more impactful.

Obviously Rebecca doesn't have to be that old, but I always have fun asking 'but what if that WAS the case'. Especially considering the immortal elements of Unit Bravo's powers. What must it be like to know someone for that long, to see them age, and be unchanged yourself? Is it more impactful for some of members UB than others? For the Detective, would her being older change how they feel about her showing back up? For something like the Auction scene in Book 3, would your Detective make a different choice on Rebecca accompanying them if they have a younger Rebecca vs an older one?

I'd love to hear from people about it too -- how old do you imagine Rebecca to be? Does her age make any difference to your Detective, positive or negative or otherwise? Is it different for different Detectives, if you have more than one?

Readmores And You - A Really Great Tumblr Feature!

(this is technically directed at stuff I've seen in a specific tag because of the content of said tag makes it more likely to spoiler things, but it applies to anyone likely learning the ins and outs of a new site. speaking of which, hello! welcome to tumblr!) (this got. longer than anticipated. apologies, I get bogged down in trying to make things as clear as possible. ^^")

I've seen this a lot recently in the VC tags especially, where the post goes something to the effect of "tw bloody animal!" then like six periods and the images of whatever dead thing the post is about.

I recognize this is probably being carried over from some other website (...reddit probably? maybe insta?) but please. I appreciate y'all so much for trying to do what you're doing. but this method of hiding pictures isn't effective on tumblr, but there is an infinitely better option!

"but why? it works fine on other sites?" firstly, a few extra lines typically don't even take up enough space on mobile (let alone desktop) to hide your pics, so even at a glance anyone is likely still seeing at least the top half of whichever picture you posted before even noticing the trigger warning on top. second, because you have to scroll all the way past the images at the bottom of your post anyway to get to the next one on your dash/in the tag/etc. so if someone comes across your post and the trigger warning is applicable as something they want to avoid, unless they have access to a keyboard to use a keybind shortcut that ive been here 12 years and still cant remember, they can't see any other posts after it without either having to scroll through the pics or outright block you. which is... not the most ideal of options I would say.

"but what else am I supposed to do then!?" I hear you ask.

READMORES!

tumblr has a wonderful feature known as a "readmore" that's built into the site! it creates a break in your post, which hides any content - be it words, images, whatever - that you place underneath it, not showing it unless the person viewing it clicks on the words "keep reading" (formerly "read more" - hence the name :D).

Cool, how do I do that?

on mobile you can place one by tapping an empty line and clicking the grey squiggle icon from the selection that allow you to insert an image/vid/link

which will place a squiggly line into the post you're making:

(desktop uses the same icon, it's just in a more compact row of icons.)

you can drag it around after placing it too, just like photos. (note: mobile can get finicky with this and it's usually just easier to remove it -click the big red X- and add it in the new place you want it.)

EDIT: some of the versions of mobile editor are broken and don't show the icons. to add it in manually type ":readmore:" (with the colons, but not the quotation marks) on its own line. Thank you for the reminder, LovingTogetic!

this is also a nice way to keep your blog tidy and not swamped in long and/or spoilery posts (say if you're posting 5k word fics, or extensive meta, or gushing over the ending of the latest game or TV show most people probably haven't seen yet)! it's not required, obviously, but it's generally considered a common courtesy for others that will be seeing your post cross their dashboard.

as an aside (I wasn't sure where to put this but under the break seemed appropriate), you may also see a lot of personal/vent posts be fully under readmores as well, even if the post is only a sentence or two long. this is mostly so followers don't necessarily see it unless they specifically click, but there's a more frustrating history to it becoming a thing: when a post is reblogged, any content above the break is permanently frozen as it existed at the time, but anything under it will reflect edits made to the post. while not common, a certain type of user sometimes browse the various "do not rb" tags and will purposefully reblog personal posts in order to upset and distress the users. putting those things under a readmore make it so even if that happens, the text can be deleted from all iterations of the post. recently the site rolled out an option to lock a post to reblogs, but you gotta mess with the settings and it's mostly a habit after a decade here dealing with the nonsense.

Time for another edition of Cooking With Osmanthusoolong!

Last night, we made tourtière, which is a meat pie from Quebec and New Brunswick, usually served for Christmas/New Year’s, but I like it whenever, as long as it’s chilly out. My recipe is based off my maternal grandmother’s, but you know, modified. Given that I don’t eat meat. Some people would say that it’s inauthentic, given that I use Beyond ground not-meat instead of beef/pork/venison, but given that the recipe originally called for passenger pigeon, it hasn’t been authentic since the turn of the 20th century. There’s also spirited debate about if potato goes in, but that’s a whole class politics thing and anyway, it’s better with potato. Lastly, before the recipe starts, I’m just gonna say: more people should use summer savoury when they cook, it’s so fucking good

Recipe time!

You can do whatever you want for your pie crust, we didn’t have a ton of time and got storebought. Get your double pie crust, however you want to.

Filling:

1 potato (I like white, but whatever you prefer for a mashed potato)

1 medium or half a really big white onion

1 tbsp or so butter, listen to your heart

We used a package of ground beyond beef, 340g

Optional: stalk of celery, finely chopped

Peel and chop your potato, boil in salted water. Reserve a little of the water after boiling, mash potatoes well

Spice mix (approximate measures):

1.5 teaspoons salt

2/3tsp cinnamon

1/2tsp ginger

1tsp summer savoury (absolutely vital)

1/4 tsp each of ground nutmeg, allspice and ground mustard (technically the mustard is optional)

1/8 tsp ground cloves

1/2-2/3tsp ground black pepper

Stir your spice mix together, some people add cayenne if you feel like it

Chop your onion finely, cook it in a big skillet in the butter until it’s translucent (add celery if you’re using it)

Add your meat, or meatless meat, browning it with the onions, and add the spice mix

Now add the potato, mixing everything well, if it’s looking dry, add some of the reserved potato water

I usually taste it here and see if it needs more salt or summer savoury

Put it in your crust

We cooked it according to crust instructions, so 50 minutes at 350F, until it’s golden

Makes a 9 inch pie

Keyboard shortcuts

The keyboard shortcuts in actual use are clearly historically contingent and path dependent - there are no standards, which means there are no ways to avoid conflict - even if you want to!

That is - unless you know every shortcut for the operating system you are compiling for and the operating system doesn't add more shortcuts and no third party programs are installed that were unaware of your presence.

Hot garbage!

In the interest of avoiding conflicting commands it would be great if people could agree on some standards.

I feel like, with [super] and [ctrl] and [alt] and [shift] and [Esc] and [space] and [Fn] - it ought to be possible to do some deconflicting here!

Since the operating system is in control of the keyboard, it can impose those standards unilaterally - it would be chaos during the transition but the future would be much better.

Except no! Inherently impossible!

Because the user will - once again - install third party software and even if we get excellent deconfliction between layers, if you install two different background services that both did their due diligence and ensured that the operating system didn't use ctrl+shift+q+w+g - it is functionally impossible for them to know about each other

Still, I want to sketch something.

NB: I've never used a Mac, maybe Steve Apple solved all of this decades ago for his platform, it seems like the kind of thing he would do. I'm gonna write like he didn't though.

The domain

I'm seeing two ways users interact with software - background/foreground - and two types of software they're interacting with - hosts and clients.

The terms are necessarily underspecified but think along the lines of

Background/Foreground

Is this shortcut supposed to consistently do the same thing every time I use it (for the OS or some background service) or might it do different things depending on which app I currently have focused?

This is muddled by the fact that the background modes have active modes e.g. if you have Nvidia Shadowplay running in the background, listening for input that tells it to turn on or off, you probably also have an Nvidia Shadowplay app that you can actively focus on.

In that case, the software is simply counted twice - it has a persistent background component and a separate component that might or might not be focused.

Host/Client

The difference between Host and Client is essentially whether the developer is responsible for intermediating with third party software. This is obviously recursive[1], I am going to pretend it isn't though.

Hardware

To the extent that your hardware sends messages to your operating system, those can be ignored for the purpose of this diagram. To the extent that your operating system sends messages to your hardware, the hardware can be treated like a persistent background service.

Scenario

You are writing code in an IDE.

Four pieces of software have five different uses for the key "e"

Your OS wants E to mean "Open default Email client."

Your Emoji Picker background service wants E to open the "Pick Emoji" dialog.

Your IDE is currently in focus and wants E to open the Project Explorer pane.

Your IDE has a plugin that format your current tab according to your Editorconfig file.

And finally: You just plain need the letter "e" in your source code.

Today: Any fucking thing might happen depending on how those different apps and plugins have their hotkeys set up.

But let us consider:

[super]+[e] opens the email client.

[super]+[shift]+[e] opens the emoji picker

[ctrl]+[e] opens the Project Explorer pane

[ctrl]+[shift]+[e] formats according the editorconfig

[e] inserts the letter "e" into the source code.

Enforcement between OS, Third party service and active client.

How do you prevent the emoji picker from squatting on [ctrl]+[shift]+[e] and fucking it all up? Especially if it is written by a third party who didn't get the memo?

Easy.

If you press [ctrl]+[shift]+[e] the emoji plugin never sees it. When the emoji picker event loop asks for new events, those WM_KEYDOWN events aren't on the list.

"How?"

From the perspective of the OS, there are three groups of software that may need to know about key events

First party background software (The OS and OS services)

Third party background software (like the Emoji picker)

Active focused client software (First or third party)

When you input a key sequence:

The OS reads through the keys:

If [super] is present, check for [shift]

If [shift] is present in the key sequence, the key events go into the Third Party pool. On receiving them, the Emoji Picker opens the Emoji dialog.

Else only [super] is present in the key sequence: The key events go into the OS private pool, where they are made available only to first party background services. The "default email" hook fires.

Else [super] is not present in the sequence: The key events go into the "focused client" pool, which is made available only to the single, currently active, focused client. They are read by the IDE.

Enforcement within active client

Write it correctly lmao

But it is just recursively the same problem! Please do the same thing!

When the IDE reads the key events out of the OS, it checks for the presence of [ctrl]

If [ctrl] is present, check for [shift].

If [shift] is present in the sequence, the key events go into the plugin pool. Upon receiving them, the formatter activates

Else only [ctrl] is present. The key event goes into the IDE's private pool. The IDE opens the Project Explorer pane.

Else [ctrl] is not present in this key sequence. The key events go into the active editor tab which inserts a single 'e' in the current file.

Expanding the shortcut configuration space

"What about [alt]?" Is that button just irrelevant? [Esc]? [Fn]?

Nah, nah. You can do a bunch with all of them. They're fundamentally the same as the shift key here. Maybe the OS reserves for itself the space of all shortcuts like [super]+[letter/number] and [super]+[alt]+[letter/number], and every other shortcut that starts with [super] is available for third party background services. Maybe clients that support plugins (browsers that support sending key events into websites) reserve [ctrl] only and everything else is fair game. However it shakes out.

Really, this is too strict, too. The purpose of the exercise is not to hobble third party background services or third party plugins, it is more to reserve a space to ensure various things don't conflict. Insofar as it can be done without leading to conflicts, you can be much more lax than this.

The two issues that brought this on are both VSCode related, because VSCode has two shortcuts.

Well, it has a lot of shortcuts. But it has two specific shortcuts that I want to talk about: [ctrl]+[b] and [ctrl]+[shift]+[e].

In the Linux keymap (VSCode has three separate keymaps for windows/linux/mac) [ctrl]+[b] opens the side pane, and [ctrl]+[shift]+[e] opens the project explorer window.

Except not for me they don't.

I am writing this text in markdown, and I have a markdown plugin installed. Somewhat reasonably, the markdown plugin feels [ctrl]+[b] should bold the selected text (that is, insert ** on both sides of the text.) And VSCode gives priority to the plugin - when my active editing pane is on a markdown document, I cannot open/close the side pane.

And the fucking IBUS emoji picker is squatting on [ctrl]+[shift]+[e]. Across the whole OS! "Yeah no matter what you're doing, you're probably gonna need emoji so we're taking first claim on incredibly ergonomic real estate for an incredibly niche use case" who the fuck accepted that pull request into my distro?

And, like, is Microsoft going to change the default key bindings for VSCode on Linux because of that insane decision? No of course not.

Are they going to change their idiocy - just to stop inconveniencing Microsoft users? Yeah that is not how I am modeling the situation unfolding I must admit.

That sucks! Shit sucks! And the only good solution is for the OS to say "We are laying absolute claim to (this namespace) for OS and background services and we are giving third parties absolute claim to (that namespace).

Which they're not gonna do but I can waste a day writing about the perfect world I want to live in.

Hi Kayleigh I want you to know i felt liek i wasin one of those bits where someone opens a locker and suddenly gets hit by a bunch of letters when i got this ask. -cracks knuckles- this will probably end up up partially under a readmore because it's gonna get long. So I don't utterly fry my brain doing this since i'm a little migrainey today I'm probably gonna stick with a polyship with Aven and Ratio. edit: I feel like a liar, i decided to add in tighnari because i love my fox. 1 nose kisses or forehead kisses?

Aventurine: With Aven we're actually very close in height (take away the heels on his shoes and that's especially true) so cute pecks on the nose aren't uncommon between us. Unless we're in bed, in which case whoever is the sleepiest and resting their head on the other often gets subjected to forehead kisses.

Ratio: being taller he's a giver of forehead kisses when he decides to be

--- Tighnari: forehead kisses despite us being about the same height. He'll often place a hand on the back of my neck and tilt me foreward so he can kiss my forehead.

7. romantic dinners at fancy restaurants or take out dinners on the couch

Aventurine: Fancy dinners, he absolutely insists on them. Will flutter his lashes and sweet talk me until he can convince me to leave the safety of my solitude and practically drag me out somewhere fancy.

Ratio: he's an even split on being convinced to go out for fancy dinners or staying in, though he has a habit of continuing to work when we eat in.

Tighnari: We eat in! He's really not much for going to fancy restaurant dinners all that much. Especially since people tend to interupt us to ask about his tail and ears or to ask for pictures with him. And while he can begrudgingly tolerate it i will lose my temper at people being rude.

10. Constantly saying "I love you" or only saying it during serious moments?

Aventurine: Hmmm i know this is an either or but i think we're more middle of the road on this one, leaning toward more serious or at least private moments. Or love tends to be conveyed in actions.

Ratio: Definitely leans toward the serious moments. Feels that his love is obvious by him spending quality time with the two of us.

11. calling eachother by your names plain and simple, or calling eachother really flowery pet names?

Aventurine: Already answered!

Ratio: Has been known to slip in a darling here and there. I picked up on calling him just doc or doctor on occasion because of aven calling him that but i often do just call him Veritas. Unlike aven he tends to call me 'roswell' if he does use my name instead of the shortened rossi. And if I call him "love" on occasion well he doesn't mind.

17. Love at first sight or slow burn?

Aventurine: I don't know if it was love at first sight but certainly immediate interest followed by us testing the waters. Okay more he decided to test the waters because i kind of just assumed he wouldn't have an interest in me which is admittedly my knee jerk reaction.

Ratio: I actually met ratio before meeting Aven and given our personalities we were distinctly more slow burn. In fact nothing may have happened between the two of us if not for aventurine.

Tighnari: Love at first sight, at least on my end. I was instantly enamored with him and quickly found him to be very comforting. We were students at the same time at the akademiya and he helped me adjust to living in sumeru. We didn't act on our feelings immediately but they were certainly there.

18. Cuddle in bed or need space to sleep? Aventurine: Cuddle! As long as it's not too hot we end up a tangled pile of limbs.

Ratio: Completely depends on his mood but he is the most likely to avoid the cuddle pile.

hey everyone! i probably should've made a post like this for my pinned ages ago, but better late than never, i guess? i'm going to stick part of this below a readmore because it got a bit long oops. you don't have to read this by any means but it's here now if you're interested!

★ i'm starlight or star! i'm in my 20s.

★ if you couldn't guess by my url i'm also brainrotting hard over twisted wonderland lately and will likely continue doing so for the foreseeable future. i have soooo much love for so many of the characters i literally can't even pick a favorite dorm. but riddle and idia are practically tied for the spot of my fave character and i ship riddle/floyd and idia/vil very hard.

★ i am very into pokemon but especially the hoenn, unova, alola, and paldea regions and the pokemon mystery dungeon series. love pokemon adventures/pokespe as well.

Welcome back, my lovelies~! We’ve got another story on our hands, and I’m glad to share it with you all. Joining us today is a certain android deity: Ortho! Say hi, Ortho!

[Greetings, everyone! Fauna Taleweaver was so kind to invite me to share a few stories with you all.]

“Eh? Hey, are you really a god? You’re more…metal-y than any of the ones I’ve seen so far.”

[Oh? Why, yes, I am a god. According to my historical records, there have been several deities in the ancient times that wore grant metal armor to war and even in peace. What’s so unusual about the fact that I am made of metal? Even Deuce Spade wears his armor with pride.]

I guess every deity is unique in their own way.

“Hrm…so what’s this story you’re gonna tell us, huh?”

[It’s one of my favorite memories with my big brother and younger sibling.]

Huh?! Wait, Ortho…what do you mean ‘younger sibling’? I thought Idia was your only brother?

[Well, you see Fauna Taleweaver, that was the case…for a long while anyway. But centuries ago, that changed. In fact, I’ve gotten big brother’s permission to share his side of the story!]

“Really? That recluse???”

[Believe it or not, my big brother was the one who put everything into motion, and…he even made me see my duties in a new light and change the way I rehabilitate broken souls! You see…]

WARNING: Implied character death but nothing descriptive; tagged just in case. I wasn't sure what else to tag it under, but please let me know if I need to add another tag and I will do so as soon as I can! Story under a readmore for length, but mostly focusing on the wholesome character growth!

“Greetings, number 5294831! Your colors are looking brighter by approximately fifteen percent–an improvement compared to last week’s scans. Oh? Number 1574, you’re looking rather dim according to my current data. My brother upgraded my systems and functions just this morning, so let’s see what options are available to assist you.”

Idia watched in silence as Ortho worked, observing the younger deity floating about Limbo as he checked on his wards. Everything seemed to be going according to design–not that he doubted his skills of course. And yet, he couldn’t help but gaze at the vast cavern, a soft frown on his face. ‘There are far more souls here than normal,’ he thought.

Everywhere he looked there were souls, each one in a deplorable condition. Most had arrived in varying shades of gray, some barely clinging to a hint of the once vibrant colors they were meant to have. Some he could see even from afar the cracks in their core, looking like fragile glass ready to shatter at the slightest touch. Others…they were so far faded that he almost missed one that floated by in front of his face.

Lost…fragile…broken…these were the souls that Ortho focused on the most, working around the clock to restore the bright hues they once held. It seemed a Herculean task, for every soul he saved, two arrived in danger of fading away forever. Even though this part of the job wasn’t in his lane, Idia could see how distressed his little brother was to see these souls vanish, too weak to survive…

What in Seven’s name was even going on in the mortal realm that so many souls come to them practically taped and glued together?

Sighing, Idia uttered, “What a drag…being a mortal should be easy mode compared to the nightmare god mode we deities have, even when they’re not fighting lame wars. At least it should be way easier than getting an uber deluxe limited edition Hizu Matsune figure…”

[:...Hi…zu…?:]

“Eep!?” he squeaked, staring at the tiny humanoid shape hiding in the nook near the entrance. “D-Don’t do that!”

The tiny body quickly retreated, huddling into a nook in the stone wall with a whimper. It was then that he realized it was a mortal soul–or rather, a child’s mortal soul. What were they even doing here?! There’s only ever been adult or elderly souls here in Limbo…maybe there has been an uptick in teenagers and young adult souls, but…children??? That shouldn’t happen…

[:...s…orr…y…don…hurt me,:] the little soul whispered quietly, their transparent ‘body’ flickering like a flashlight’s failing battery. [:P…lease…:]

Realizing that they were scared of him, he hesitantly knelt down and–in as calm a voice as he could muster–he spoke softly and said, “I-It’s okay…I’m not going to hurt you. You don’t have to be scared…” Oh Sevens, he wasn’t good with children–well, people in general anyway, but still! Taking a breath, he asked, “How uh…how did you get here? Shouldn’t you be over in the fields of Purga…tory…”

As soon as the words left his mouth it finally sank in the condition of the soul itself: dark cracks creating a spider web effect across its surface, black-violet ooze staining the inner core, and the color…the original color of the soul had all but completely faded from existence. It was impossible to tell what color it originally was, just like the other broken souls.

[:I…don’t…remember,:] the soul said, its voice distorted as they covered their head in their hands. [:It’s dark…and scary…mama…papa…where are you? You…you promised…you would come get me before…:]

“Before…what?” Idia asked, voice quiet.

[:...the monsters…:]

He felt a chill go down his spine at this, though he couldn’t quite place why as he asked, “What monsters?”

[:Monster…the monsters…! They’re coming! The monsters are coming!! AAAAAA-!!!:]

The soul–though it had no lungs–unleashed a haunting wail so shrill that Idia’s blood ran cold and his ears began ringing, forcing him to cover them. Before he could even think of calling for help, a blur of black and blue appeared next to him and a gentle lullaby began to play from the speakers built into his frame. Idia could hear Ortho’s muffled voice as he said, “Please settle down, number 429754. Your core is in critical condition and cannot take much more stress. Please don’t worry–there are no monsters here. You’re safe now.”

Whether it was the music or his words, the ghostly wails died down to quiet whimpers, the corporeal form curled into a tight ball before fading away and leaving behind a faintly glowing glass orb. As Ortho picked up the core and held it close, Idia saw the black-violet ooze spread further and recognized the all too familiar material.

Blot…

“...how did this happen?” Idia asked.

Ortho seemed to hesitate, looking unsure of what to say before looking down. “I found this one in the remains of a small town,” he finally said. “It was overrun by a pack of Soulless Ones. Deuce Spade and Rook Hunt managed to stop them from escaping to the next mortal settlement, but…there were only five survivors out of a roster of three hundred mortals.”

Soulless Ones…mortals whose souls were corrupted by blot, leaving behind a hollow shell of their mortal bodies to become twisted and mangled amalgamations of corruption. These abominations become little more than zombies, seeking out uncorrupted mortals in search of their own lost soul until nothing is left. He’d heard from Azul how the other deities were struggling to contain the spread, but…he never imagined it could ever get this bad.

“How did you manage to save this soul?” he asked. “I thought mortals attacked by those things had an instant-KO?”

“According to my scans of the mortal shell, they possessed DNA from a deity relative–inconclusive if parent or a distant. By my calculations, this was the only thing that kept their soul safe long enough for me to slow the spread of blot. Now, however…their core is unstable.” Though his eyes closed in a smile, Idia could see that it didn’t quite reach the same way it normally would. “Once I take them to the Stardust River for their first cleansing, we may begin tailoring a proper recovery plan to mend the cracks and heal their light.”

“Eh? You haven’t taken them to the river yet?”

“No. My simulation program indicates that a full submersion in its current state would cause unnecessary stress on the soul, accelerating the spread of blot. I’ve been applying drops from the vial that Lilia Vanrouge gifted me to help with mending some of the cracks. Once the soul is sufficiently calm, I will take them to the Stardust River.”

He felt a pang of guilt that refused to leave him be, taking his focus away even from his gaming match later that night. As the God of Death, Idia rarely interfered with the lives of mortals, let alone interacted with them. Yet seeing his younger brother struggle to understand how to soothe such a young soul traumatized by creatures that were never meant to exist…

Then, he remembered the sadness in Ortho’s eyes, the sheer worry in his voice as he gently tended to the fragile soul. With a deep breath, he released it in a nervous sigh and uttered, “Why am I doing this to myself…?” before pulling out his phone and dialing a number.

“Good morning, number 429754! How are you to…huh? Big brother? What are you doing here?”

Turning to face the small android, Idia crunched down on the snack he’d been munching on and said, “Watching Hizu Matsune music videos before we watch the series Shimmer Heart Sugar Stars. There’s a new season that just released today, and we already finished the first two seasons last night.”

“Huh?” Ortho uttered in confusion, shaking his head in disbelief. “But…you’re never here in Limbo unless I am, and you’ve rarely shown any interest in interacting with mortal souls for very long.”

Idia shrugged and said, “After what happened yesterday, I couldn’t stop thinking about what you said. So…I figured I’d try something different.”

Looking in the direction that he pointed, he gasped in amazement and said, “You managed to get them back into their corporeal form! How did you-??”

“Well…you said you couldn’t start the recovery plan until they were calm enough to take a dip in the river, right? After everything they’ve been through…I reached out to Lilia for a few cheat codes.”

“Cheat codes?”

“Yeah. Compared to us, he’s boss level in terms of kids and childcare, so he’d know a few strategies to calm one down, right? He said to find something that interests them, so…” With a wide, toothy grin, he gestured to the screen displaying bright and colorful characters singing and dancing together as he said, “After remembering how they reacted when I mentioned Hizu Matsune, I came up with the ultimate gaming strategy! Using top notch music videos and anime shows with the perfect amount of cheerful and sappy cuteness, it’s the perfect plan to calm them and catch up on my backlog, sending them on the path to a visit in the Stardust River! Pretty clever if I do say so myself. Sound good, Shims?”

“Huh? Shims??”

The soul looked up at him, a flash of pink-red light flaring within as they smiled and nodded. [:Can we…watch more, please?:] they asked, pointing to the screen.

“Sure, Shims.” Tapping away at his keyboard, the screen changed to an opening theme song with a peppy beat, the soul swaying and bouncing happily to the music. “We should be done with this season within a few hours if we don’t take breaks.”

Ortho, despite having a mask covering his mouth, looked gobsmacked as he stared at the two. A moment later he shook his head, activating his scanners and examining them closely. “Oh! Readings indicate that the soul’s color’s are showing a twenty percent increase! They’re still faint, but by comparison to the five percent it was yesterday it is still an improvement.” Looking up at Idia, he said, “At this rate…we should be able to take number 429754 to the Stardust River in less than a month! You’re a genius, big brother!”

[:Shims…:]

“Huh?”

[:Shims…my name is Shims,:] the soul said, pointing at the screen again. [:Shimmer…makes me happy. Call me Shims…please?:]

“Oh…of course, Shims!” Giggling, Ortho said, “Perhaps we can find more fun things to help with your recovery plan. And perhaps I can incorporate this method to ensure the recovery of the other souls! May I join?”

“Sure,” Idia said as he and Shims moved over so he could have a seat. “Should we start from the opening again?”

“Yes!”/[:Yes!:]

Every day afterwards Idia made time to enter Limbo with Ortho with a new series in hand, finding that Shims enjoyed listening to him ramble for hours on end about his favorite shows and games and manga. With each storyline he told and the characters that brought the story to life, he could see the enchantment on their transparent face grow and the color blossoming brighter. There were times he was forced to ease back when the core reacted to the blot, which had slowed its spread yet still remained present. Ortho kept reassuring him that they were making good progress and that the stardust drops were helping, but he couldn’t help but feel anxious each time he saw the pain on their face.

Finally–after what seemed like an eternity–Ortho deemed them ready for the journey. Only…

“It’s okay, Shims. We need to make our way to the Stardust River if we are to begin your recovery program.”

[:No! Don’t want to leave!:]

“But don’t you want to feel better?”

[:Noooo…the monsters are out there! Please don’t leave me!:]

Ortho sighed as he moved back, hovering near the crevice that Shims had hidden themselves in. “What am I going to do with you?” he wondered aloud. “This has never happened before. What protocol should I follow…?”

Idia watched as Ortho pondered over what to do, frowning in concern. Sure, Shims had gotten better at speaking and had come out of their shell more, but now it seemed like they had reverted to their terrified self again. By now the blot had spread farther than it had in the beginning, consuming more than half of their core and ooze starting to seep out. What were they going to do? Even if their soul was part deity, it could only preserve their core for so long before it was consumed…

“Big brother, what are we going to do?” Ortho asked, snapping him out of his thoughts as he noticed how bothered his younger brother was at this situation. “We can’t leave them here for much longer, and we’re running out of time.”

“I…don’t know,” he uttered, looking back at his phone at the messages he’d gotten. “Lilia mentioned that some kids could be stubborn, but he never said what to do in this case. I don’t have a cheat code for this and they don’t want to watch or play anything…”

“...you were able to connect with them, big brother.”

“Eh?”

“You were the one who managed to help heal Shims’ soul core so we could even make it to this point.” Gesturing to the hiding soul, Ortho said, “They might listen to you if you speak to them.”

He swallowed the lump in his throat, feeling a surge of anxiety in his chest. It was one thing to chat with them about different characters and storylines, but to try and talk to them about normie stuff?! That was hard enough the first time around! How was he supposed to do this?! He didn’t have time to prepare a strategy or-

[:...big brother…:]

He froze, staring at the soul as they stared up at him. “What…did you call me?” he mumbled.

[:Big brother…:] Shims repeated, looking ready to cry despite not having the capability to do so. [:I don’t want to go…I don’t…want to be alone again…:]

“...you…won’t be alone, Shims.” Crouching down so he was sitting back on his heels, Idia watched them for a moment before he said, “I know you’re scared, but…there’s a whole world of fun things and friends to find back in the mortal realm. Don’t you want to go and see it all again? Discover something new?”

[:But…the monsters…:] Shims’ colors began to dim again, curling into an even tighter ball than he’d seen before. [:The monsters are still out there…what if they find me again?:]

He didn’t know how to respond. ‘I always thought mortals had a permanent easy mode compared to the nightmare levels,’ he thought to himself. Looking up at the souls floating around them, something finally clicked in his mind. “...they might be there, Shims. But…if you keep hiding away, worrying about what kind of crazy scary mobs are out there…you’ll miss out on the chance to build the life you want to live.”

[:Huh…?:]

“I understand now…it doesn’t matter whether you think someone is playing on safe or easy mode–your idea of an easy playthrough may be someone else’s nightmare difficulty. And that’s okay.” Thinking back on the games he introduced to them, he said, “The point of every game is that–no matter how many times you get knocked down–you get up and try again no matter how many times it takes to reach the final boss. The journey would be long and difficult, but you’ll always find companions to help you through each level until you can beat the game and move on to the next campaign. Life may be tough, but–” glancing up at Ortho–who gave him a smile–he said, “with the right NPCs by your side, even the scariest monsters can be defeated.”

Was it his imagination, or had some of the other fragile souls drifted closer…?

[:...I…I’m scared,:] Shims said softly. [:What if…what if I can’t get back up?:]

“Then…Ortho will be there to pick you up.” Holding his hand out to them, he said, “And then when we meet again, we can play games and trade stories–just like we have been doing.” With a genuine smile, he said, “No matter how much of a normie you become, I want to hear how your campaign goes…okay?”

Shims looked from his hand to his face, slowly reaching out to rest their hand into his palm and allowing him to pull them out of their hiding place. Then, in a quiet voice, they asked, [:Will you…come with me, big brother?:]

A warm feeling spread in his chest, and he nodded as he said, “Sure…if you’re okay with having two brothers now.”

The smile on their face grew so wide he couldn’t help but grin back, Ortho happily moving over to hold their free hand in his. “Let’s go,” Ortho said. “The Stardust River awaits!”

[...and after the blot was cleansed from their core, we were able to restore their light to the point they could safely be reborn. Due to the nature of their heritage though, not all of their memories were cleared to allow a clean slate.]

Oh no! Were…were they okay?

[Of course, Fauna Taleweaver! In fact, they were able to live very well in several life cycles before choosing to stay with us as a new minor deity. By my calculations, they should find their calling within the next few centuries–I can’t wait!]

“Fynaaah…Faun, are you tryin’ to make me cry with all these stories?!”

Awww, you really are just a softie on the inside, huh, Grim~?

“I’m not soft! S-Stop laughing at your future god!!”

Edit 3: Lines for calling to other heisters were added, along with cheers when a door/vault is opened, warnings during assaults, and small curses/shouts for any situation like the vault door being locked, and taking officers as hostages, and using throwables. More pager lines have also been added.

Edit 4: Broken drill lines have been added, plus more lines for doors being opened and some for when tear gas is deployed. Also, more basic special lines have been added, lines for when he's revived, when cops are retreating, and more general safehouse lines.

no worries! i haven't answered this question in at Leeeaast a few years anyways :P nowadays i use clip studio paint, and almost all of the brushes i use are stuff i've grabbed off the asset store! (with edits, naturally). i'd put this under a readmore but every time i did tumblr broke the formatting orz

my absolute Favorite brush - something i'd recommend to Anyone regardless of what they're using it for - is this highlighter brush! i've been using it for almost 2 years now! whether it's sketches, outlines, or paintings - it adds a nice Chunky feeling with the square brush shape & a texture that i adore on top of that.

anything i post that has a Cleaner outline than normal is probably a result of this brush! i Love the sketchier feel of my other brushes, but when i need something well-defined and solid, this is my go-to brush. the weight & feel of it reminds me of the old bic pens i would doodle with in the margins of my homework back in highschool :P

the first brush from this set is one i use to compliment the brush i just listed - it's made by the same creator, so it has the same feel, but it's a LOT better at Suggesting things rather than Defining them, if that makes sense! i use it a lot when i'm drawing wrinkles, folds in clothing, blush lines, crosshatching - really, anything that should Be There, but isn't meant to be the center of attention. also good for loose sketches!

this brush is very new to me! total disclosure, you have to pay for this now, but i downloaded it when it was free. i mostly use this brush for sketching, but i think it also works REALLY well for painting! my usual approach to blending colors is to lay down a base, slap another color on top of it, and eyedrop the blend between them to go over the transition point with - and i think this brush lends Really well to that. reminds me of working with chalk pastels irl :P

then there's this one specific brush i've been OBSESSED with lately. you can see it in a good bit of my recent art, if you know how to look for it, and i think it's something i'm going to be using for a long time! it has a specific weight and Oomph to it that i just Loooove so much

when it comes to post-painting, i-need-to-add-more-Crunch-to-this-drawing, this noise set is where i go first! this isn't a situation where i can just say "yeah slap one of these down on overlay at 30%" or whatever - you have to experiment! every time i use one of these i end up spending 30 minutes going through The Whole List of blending modes to see which one works best & then spend Another 30 minutes fiddling with the opacity. and then spend Another 30 minutes fiddling with the luminosity & saturation of the layer. there's so many colors available that i can just drag & drop & delete until i find what color scheme works best!

honorable mention - this set also costs money, but it's one of my favorite ways to make a plain color background have More Flavor. LOVE that it has a clean version of the shape and then a second version where it's got a Chunky border! plus making this post made me realize the creator added more shapes since the last time i downloaded it yaaAAAYY
