Chapter 11
As Lando mulled over his options, one course of action emerged as the most direct and potentially effective: confronting Harold Rossi directly. Despite the risks and the emotional turmoil it might unleash, Lando believed that confronting Harold face-to-face was the only way to uncover the truth once and for all.
Harold Rossi had been a prominent figure in Lando's life for as long as he could remember. From childhood to adulthood, Harold had been a fixture in the Norris family's orbit, a respected businessman with a reputation for integrity and success. But now, faced with the shocking revelation of Harold's involvement in Clyde Mitchells' murder and the kidnapping of a baby, Lando's perception of the man had been shattered.
The thought of confronting Harold filled Lando with a mixture of anger and frustration. How could someone he had known and trusted for so long be capable of such heinous acts? The betrayal cut deep, and Lando struggled to reconcile the image of the man he had once looked up to with the reality of his actions.
But despite his anger, Lando knew that he needed answers. He needed to confront Harold and demand the truth, no matter how painful it might be. With a steely resolve, Lando made preparations to confront Harold, steeling himself for whatever revelations might come to light.
As Lando approached the familiar Rossi home, a wave of conflicting emotions washed over him. The house, once a second home where he had spent countless hours with Amelia and her family, now felt like unfamiliar territory, fraught with tension and uncertainty.
Parking his car in front of the house, Lando took a moment to collect his thoughts before stepping out onto the familiar path leading to the front door. Each step felt heavy with the weight of the impending confrontation, the air thick with anticipation.
With a deep breath, Lando ascended the steps to the front door and reached out to knock. The sound reverberated through the silent house, echoing off the walls and sending a shiver down Lando's spine. He waited, his heart pounding in his chest, for a response.
After what felt like an eternity, the door swung open, revealing the imposing figure of Harold Rossi standing on the threshold. His expression was unreadable, his eyes betraying no hint of emotion as he regarded Lando with a cool detachment.
“Ah, Lando! What a surprise. It's been a minute since I last saw you.” Harold enthusiastically greeted Lando.
“Hi, Mr Rossi.” Lando managed to greet Harold, feigning a small smile.
“Are you here for business or looking for Amelia?” Harold chuckled as he studied the twenty-four year old at his doorstep.
“Business, actually. Do you have a minute?” Lando enquired, suddenly sounding serious.
“Sure, come through to the study.” Harold agreed and gestured for Lando to follow him to the study.
The door clicked softly shut behind Lando, enclosing them in the dimly lit study. Harold motioned for Lando to take a seat across from him, and Lando complied, though his nerves were wound tight. The familiar surroundings of the study, once comforting, now felt suffocating as Lando prepared to broach a topic he had never imagined confronting Harold about.
“I wanted your advice on something.” Lando began, his voice steady despite the turmoil within him.
“Yes?” Harold leaned forward slightly, his expression curious yet composed.
Lando listened intently to Harold's response, his mind whirling with a mix of frustration and disbelief. The calm demeanour Harold projected only served to deepen Lando's sense of unease.
“How have you managed to keep your business clean for so long? I'm finding it quite difficult at the moment to not get my hands dirty.” Lando pressed, unable to shake the feeling of betrayal that simmered beneath the surface.
Harold leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on Lando with a measured intensity.
“Patience.” He replied, his tone deliberate. “And knowing the right people.”
There was a pause as Lando absorbed Harold's words, a bitter taste settling in his mouth. The realisation dawned on him that Harold's definition of "knowing the right people" likely extended far beyond mere acquaintanceship. He couldn't help but feel a sense of disillusionment at the revelation that the man he had respected and looked up to for so long was not the paragon of integrity he had believed him to be.
“Like the Russells?” Lando's question hung in the air, heavy with implication.
Harold's expression remained stoic, but a flicker of tension betrayed his facade of composure.
“I beg your pardon?” He echoed, his tone sharp with feigned innocence. Lando leaned forward slightly, his gaze unwavering.
“Would you ever ask the Russells to clean up a mess for you?” He repeated, his voice steady despite the rising tension in the room.
“Lando, I'm not sure what mess you find yourself in, but keep clear of the Russells. They are notorious for blackmail and bribery. Trust me, I know.” Harold warned.
Lando's eyebrows lifted in surprise at Harold's admission.
“So you're aware of their methods?” He asked, his tone tinged with scepticism. Harold sighed heavily, his shoulders sagging as if under a great weight.
“Unfortunately, yes. They've approached me on more than one occasion, offering their 'services' in exchange for favours.” Harold admitted, his voice heavy with resignation.
“And did you accept?” Lando inquired, his gaze unwavering as he watched Harold closely. Harold hesitated for a moment before responding.
“I won't deny that I've entertained their proposals in the past.” He admitted, his tone tinged with regret. “But I've since realised the dangers of getting involved with such individuals. They're a liability, Lando, and I advise you to steer clear of them at all costs.”
“Is that what happened with Clyde Mitchells?” Lando suddenly asked. Harold's eyes widened in shock at Lando's accusation, his expression quickly morphing into one of guarded composure.
“I have no idea what you're talking about, Lando.” He replied, his voice steady despite the underlying tension in the air.
“Don't play dumb with me, Harold.” Lando pressed, his tone sharp and accusatory. “I know about Clyde Mitchells and what happened to him in those woods.”
Harold's facade faltered for a moment, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his features before he regained his composure.
“I think you're mistaken, Lando. I had nothing to do with whatever happened to Mr. Mitchells.” He countered, his voice tinged with defensiveness.
Harold's jaw clenched visibly, his gaze hardening as he regarded Lando with a steely resolve.
A knock at the study door abruptly halted their conversation before the door creaked open and Amelia popped her head in.
“Hey, I thought I heard your voice.” Amelia stated as she entered her father's study, her eyes landing on Lando’s frustrated expression. “What's going on?”
“Oh, nothing, dear. Lando just needed some business advice.” Harold quickly interjected before Lando could say anything, but Amelia noticed that Lando wanted to say something.
“Lando?” Amelia pressed, her tone tinged with concern.
“Boy, I am warning you.” Harold threatened Lando as Lando rose from his seat.
“Okay, seriously, what is happening? You’re scaring me.” Amelia insisted, stepping closer to Lando.
Lando took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he was about to reveal.
“Your father... he's not who you think he is.” Lando began, his voice grave. Amelia's eyes widened in disbelief.
“What are you talking about, Lando?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Lando, I suggest you choose your next words very carefully.” Harold interjected, his tone icy. But Lando ignored him, his gaze locked with Amelia's.
“Your father... he was involved in something years ago. Something... dark.” Lando continued, his voice faltering slightly as he spoke.
“Involved in what?” Amelia's brow furrowed in confusion.
Lando hesitated, struggling to find the right words to convey the gravity of the situation.
“Amelia, your father was involved in the death of Clyde Mitchells.” He finally admitted, his voice barely audible.
“Who’s Clyde Mitchells?” Amelia asked, confused, as her gaze shifted between Lando and her father.
Lando took a deep breath, his gaze shifting between Amelia and her father, Harold.
“Clyde Mitchells was your biological father.” He repeated, his voice steady despite the weight of his words. Amelia's eyes widened in shock, her mind struggling to process the revelation.
“But... that makes no sense, Lando…” She stammered, unable to form coherent thoughts.
Harold remained silent, his expression unreadable as he watched the scene unfold before him.
“Lando, what are you saying?” Amelia asked, her voice tinged with desperation. Lando took a step closer to her, his eyes filled with empathy.
“Your father - Harold - he's been lying to you, Amelia. He's been hiding the truth from you for years.” He explained, his voice soft yet firm.
Amelia's breath caught in her throat as she turned to face her father, searching his eyes for any sign of denial or explanation. Harold remained stoic, his features composed as he met his daughter's gaze. But there was a flicker of unease in his eyes, a subtle hint of guilt that Lando couldn't ignore.
“Amelia, listen to me.” Harold began, his voice strained. “There are things you don't understand.”
Amelia's voice trembled with disbelief as she turned to face her father, her eyes pleading for an explanation.
“Dad, is this true?” She repeated, her voice cracking with emotion. Harold's jaw tightened as he finally met her gaze.
“Amelia, there's more to the story than you know.” He admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
“But why? Why would you do something like that? And, why would you kill him?” Amelia demanded, her voice rising with anger and hurt.
“Your biological father found you and before he could make contact, your father here had him killed. You remember the night out in the woods, when we saw that man get shot?” Lando asked, reigniting a painful memory.
“We saw my father get shot?” Amelia choked as she replayed the visual in her mind.
Harold watched as the tears streamed down his daughter’s face as she grabbed hold of Lando’s bicep to keep herself steady.
“Your mother was broken after the baby died. And, I needed her to be happy, so I did what I had to do. And, we've only given you the very best life.” Harold attempted to explain his decisions.
Amelia recoiled at her father's words, the gravity of his actions hitting her like a ton of bricks. The revelation left her feeling hollow and betrayed, her sense of security shattered in an instant.
“You... You sacrificed someone's life for your own happiness?” She whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief and anger.
“Amelia, I know it sounds unforgivable, but I thought I was protecting your mother. I thought I was doing what was best for our family.” Harold continued.
Amelia's eyes burned with unshed tears as she struggled to comprehend the depth of her father's deception. The man she had always looked up to, the man she had trusted implicitly, had been keeping a dark and devastating secret from her for her entire life.
“How could you?” She whispered, her voice breaking with emotion. “How could you lie to me, to everyone?”
Harold's shoulders slumped with the weight of his guilt as he met her gaze, his eyes brimming with tears.
“I'm sorry, Amelia.” He choked out, his voice thick with emotion. “I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted any of this to come to light.”
But his words offered little comfort to Amelia, who felt as though her entire world had been turned upside down. The man she had once idolized was now a stranger to her, his actions unforgivable in her eyes.
“You didn't have to kill him.” Amelia sneered, seeing Harold a completely different light.
“He wouldn't take money for his silence.” Harold countered.
“Because you stole his daughter from him! You're more awful than I thought.” She argued, her voice strained as she got the words out.
“You see what you've done, Norris. You've disrupted everything.” Harold remarked, slumping back in his chair.
“Oh, no. You keep Lando out of this. It's thanks to him that I know the truth, and fuck, it's thanks to him I'm still alive today. You can take your money, your cars, everything, Harold, but I want nothing to do with you.” Amelia shrugged, her disappointment and anger weaving a web in her words.
“Amelia, let's just be rational.” Harold urged her, causing her to scoff at his audacity.
“What is my real name?” Amelia enquired. “The name Clyde and his wife gave me.’
“Catherine.” Lando informed her.
But his words offered little solace to Amelia, who felt as though she had been robbed of the chance to know her true identity. The name Catherine echoed in her mind, a constant reminder of the lies that had shaped her life.
“I need some time.” She whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “I need to figure things out.”
Harold nodded, his own grief mirroring hers as he watched his daughter retreat into herself. The rift between them seemed insurmountable, a gaping chasm that threatened to swallow them both whole.
As she left her father's study, Amelia couldn't shake the feeling of emptiness that consumed her. The truth had set her free, but it had also left her adrift in a sea of uncertainty, unsure of who she was or where she belonged. All she knew was that her life would never be the same again.
Lando's heart felt heavy as he watched Amelia leave her father's study, her world shattered by the revelations that had been laid bare. He had known that confronting Harold Rossi would unravel the fabric of their lives, but he hadn't anticipated the extent of the devastation it would wreak.
“I hope you're happy, Norris. You've torn my family apart.” Harold's voice cut through the silence, filled with bitterness and resentment. Lando met Harold's gaze, his expression unreadable as he processed the weight of his words.
“She deserves more than being lied to.” He finally replied, his voice tinged with regret.
“And who are you to decide what she deserves? You've always had a way of meddling in things that don't concern you.” Harold's eyes narrowed as he regarded Lando, his features twisted with anger.
“This does concern me. That’s the woman I love, Harold.” Lando insisted, his tone firm as he met Harold's gaze head-on. Harold's jaw clenched as he absorbed Lando's words, his expression hardening with resolve.
“You may think you're doing what's best for her, Norris, but mark my words – you'll only bring her more pain.” Harold warned Lando.
“At least I won’t be kidnapping children to keep my wife happy. I’ll be sure to take the adoption route instead.” Lando countered and with that left Harold’s study to find Amelia.
Lando found her standing outside by his McLaren.
“Let’s get out of here.” She told Lando as she got into the passenger seat.
As Lando drove, the silence between them was heavy with unspoken words, each lost in their own thoughts. Amelia's mind was a whirlwind of confusion and disbelief, her heart weighed down by the weight of the truth she had just learned. Beside her, Lando's grip on the steering wheel was tight, his jaw set with determination as he navigated the familiar streets.
Finally, they arrived at Lando's home, a sanctuary where they could escape the chaos of the outside world and find solace in each other's company. Amelia stepped out of the car, the cool night air brushing against her skin as she followed Lando inside.
As the weight of everything she had learned began to bear down on her, Amelia felt her chest tighten, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. Panic clawed at the edges of her consciousness, threatening to overwhelm her as her heart pounded erratically in her chest.
Lando sensed the shift in her demeanor immediately, his gaze softening with concern as he reached out to gently place a hand on her shoulder.
“Amelia, hey, it's okay.” He murmured, his voice a soothing balm against the rising tide of panic. “Just focus on your breathing, okay? In and out, nice and slow.”
But the walls of her mind seemed to close in around her, suffocating her with their oppressive weight. Her thoughts spiraled out of control, a chaotic whirlwind of fear and uncertainty threatening to consume her whole.
“Amelia, look at me.” Lando urged, his voice cutting through the fog of her panic. Slowly, she turned to meet his gaze, the warmth and reassurance in his eyes anchoring her to the present moment.
“You're safe here.” He continued, his words a lifeline in the storm. “I'm right here with you. Just keep breathing, okay? You're stronger than you think.”
Lando gently takes Amelia's hand and places it on her chest, encouraging her to feel the rise and fall of her breath.
“Focus on your breath, Amelia.” He encouraged her, his voice gentle. “Feel your hands on your chest, okay?”
As Lando continues to hold her hands against her chest, Amelia gradually feels the tension easing from her body. With each passing moment, his steady presence and comforting touch serve as an anchor, grounding her in the present and offering a sense of security. As her racing heart begins to slow its frantic pace, Amelia's breathing steadies, deepening into a calm and rhythmic pattern.
She leaned against him and he instinctively wrapped his arms around her in a warm embrace. The warmth of his embrace envelops her, offering solace and reassurance in the midst of her turmoil. Finally, after what feels like an eternity, the tightness in her chest begins to loosen, replaced by a sense of peace and serenity.
“Thank you.” She whispered, her voice barely above a breath as she turned to look at Lando. “I don't know what I would do without you.”
Lando offered her a warm smile, his eyes reflecting the depth of his affection and concern.
“You don't have to do anything alone, Amelia. I'll always be here for you, no matter what. You can trust me.” He replied softly before placing a kiss on the top of her head.
“I need the world to know what he did.” Amelia's voice, though steady, carried the weight of determination and resolve as she spoke. Her words hung in the air with a sense of conviction, echoing the strength of her newfound resolve.
“Are you sure about that? What about your career, your business?” Lando asked, worried about her sudden conviction.
“A man lost his life looking for his daughter, there is no plausible reason why the world shouldn’t know. The dealership is mine, so regardless of what happens to Harold, my business should be fine. And, if I have to change my name, then I’ll do that too.” Amelia responded, shrugging.
“Are you sure?” Lando asked, wanting to make sure that she was confident in her plan.
“Would you still love me if I was named Catherine?” Amelia wondered, diverting the conversation slightly.
“Amelia, Catherine, a name doesn’t change the person you are. So, yeah. I would love you if your name was Catherine.” Lando replied, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“You really do love me, don’t you?” Amelia realised as she studied him.
“I would go through hell for you, baby, yeah. I love you so much.” He assured her before kissing her lightly.
“I love you, Lan.” She told him and kissed him again.

- Lessons in Japanese Game Design #3 -
Aside from what is easily one of the most stylish presentations in a videogame from the 1990s, one of Front Mission 3′s truly remarkable features consists of an in-game internet browser running within a simulated operating system. Expanding on the concept first rehearsed by Squaresoft in the second entry of the series, this massive component of the game can be accessed during breaks between missions, offering the player access to a number of pages for government entities, enterprises or other institutions. Access to additional websites is permitted as the game progresses.
This inventive solution offers unparalleled insight into the fictional universe of the game, in that it paints a very granular image of a futuristic society, its economy, geopolitical environment and zeitgeist. The information contained in these pages comes in the form of of bulletin boards, institutional updates, press releases, top secret data volumes, or the occasionally amusing curiosity. The user interface itself permits some degree of customisation, such as the option to disable the startup animation - itself a gorgeous visual relic that one hardly tires of watching - or changing the wallpaper pattern. Certain websites will also provide the option to download content, including images which can be set as said wallpaper. Other resources require secure access via the insertion of a password. Moreover, the player will have access to an email inbox to both read and send messages as may be relevant to advance onto the next stage.
Make-believe computer front-ends in video games were no novelty by the year 1999. Several sci-fi adventure, role-playing or action games allowed access to often very believable GUIs for the purpose of, for instance, retrieving precious clues or, say, disabling security locks. Aside from Front Mission 2, Final Fantasy VIII fans will likely remember the exciting Balamb Garden Network terminal. Kowloon's Gate's unforgettable Kownloonet terminals gave access to an email inbox, an all-important database and various other quotidian curiosities that helped fleshing out its mystic sci-fi narrative. The Japanese were privileged to have a complete version of Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere with access to an in-game encyclopedia the player could browse, as well as additional story elements told through email exchanges between the characters.
That same year, the western Tactical RPG sensation from the West, Jagged Alliance 2, dabbled in this idea. Only three short years later, CyberConnect2′s singular .hack series was designed around the idea of a MMORPG that plays offline, allowing for countless interactions with non-playable characters which simulate messaging formats of the era. Other notable examples include the 2chan boards in Steins;Gate or, inescapably, the passionate love letter to web 1.0 that is Hypnospace Outlaw.
Generally, all of the aforementioned titles are either entirely dedicated on a similar concept, or merely resorted to it as a secondary, amusing distraction. Front Mission 3 pioneered the use of this device as a storytelling technique. No other game of the time, at least to my knowledge, had dedicated so much of its resources to producing a credible replica of design and functionality of the internet as it once existed.

Designing the ‘perfect’ meal to feed long-term space travelers
Imagine blasting off on a multiyear voyage to Mars, fueled by a diet of bland, prepackaged meals. As space agencies plan for longer missions, they’re grappling with the challenge of how to best feed people. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Food Science & Technology have designed the optimal “space meal”: a tasty vegetarian salad. Theychose fresh ingredients that meet male astronauts’ specialized nutritional needs and can be grown in space.
Astronauts in space burn more calories than humans on Earth and require extra micronutrients, such as calcium, to stay healthy during extended exposure to microgravity. Additionally, future long-term missions will require growing food in a sustainable, circular way within the spacecraft or space colonies. While researchers have explored methods of growing food in space and what nutrients astronauts require to stay healthy, specific fresh meals have not been developed. So, Volker Hessel and coworkers wanted to optimize a space meal that meets those unique requirements of spaceflight and tastes good.
First, the researchers assessed combinations of fresh ingredients, using a method called linear programming, which computationally balances different variables to meet a specific goal. In this case, their model identified how well the combinations of different foods could meet a male astronaut’s daily nutritional needs while minimizing the water required to grow the foods. The team was also concerned about the sustainability of the foods in space, selecting ingredients that needed little fertilizer, time and area to grow and whether inedible portions could be recycled. Of the 10 scenarios the researchers examined, they found that a vegetarian meal made up of soybeans, poppy seeds, barley, kale, peanuts, sweet potato and/or sunflower seeds provided the most efficient balance of maximal nutrients and minimal farming inputs. While this combination couldn’t quite provide all the micronutrients an astronaut needs, those missing could be added in a supplement, the researchers suggest.
To make sure that the identified combination was tasty, the team whipped up the ideal space meal as a salad for four people to taste test here on Earth. One tester gave rave reviews and “wouldn’t mind eating this all week as an astronaut.” Other people were more muted in their praise, even though they went back for second helpings. In the future, the researchers plan to see what their computer model dishes up as options for female astronauts and expand the variety of crops in their database.

WIP Wednesday: The Spire
This fine Wipnesday I figured it was time to talk about one of the biggest movers & shakers of the setting in The Clockwork Boy. I've allowed these gentlemen and a majority of them are indeed men, to operate from the shadow up until now mostly to preserve the mystique, but no longer. This isn't to say I'm airing all the dirty laundry of course, but let's at least meet the bastards, shall we?
The Spire, in its strictest literal sense, refers to the massive tower built out of black stone very close to the physical center of the City. Despite looking like some artifact of the city's history, this dauntingly tall building is only about 20 years old and occupies much of the ground upon which the Imperial Palace was built. The palace itself didn't survive much more than a few years past the collapse as enterprising looters and premature archeologists all but disassembled the place.
The Spire was built, as discussed in earlier writings on The Coal Wars, by a faction of merchants, capital-owners, and various moneyed interests that by canny manipulation of the wartime economy had elevated their positions to the richest inhabitants of the crumbling Imelian empire. Now without even the faintest, most permissive fetters of the weakened Imelian government, there was no force in the city to oppose them, and the faction wanted it to be plainly obvious.
As a monument to their excessive wealth, these merchants commissioned the construction of The Spire. No expense was spared, at least in terms of material and equipment, albeit the occasional corner was cut when it came to manpower. Old habits, as they say, die hard. While this was not a formal statement of purpose, it certainly worked as one, as the organization was known as The Spire from that point on.
The Spire wields much power in the city, but they show a preference for keeping that power as hidden as possible. Granted, few things happen without their say-so, but they prefer to make sure the consequences for stepping out of line seem more like a rule of nature than an act of tyranny. A competing workshop that refused to pay Spire-owned businesses' fees for employing their quote-unquote patents, for example, would experience being blacklisted from major raw material traders, see steady clients cancel with little to no warning, and any number of utilities and services become unavailable to them. Some of these consequences, like being locked out of the raw materials market and having to pay increased docking fees at the local harbors could be understood as direct retaliation as many big names in these fields are owned by The Spire. What cannot be explained in such a direct way, however, is the work of The Enforcers.
The Enforcers portrays itself as something between a city-wide neighborhood watch and a bunch of soccer hooligans, albeit not in those exact words as neither the concept of soccer nor neighborhood watch groups are present in the setting. While this image might seem less than wholesome, the truth is even less charitable, as The Enforcers function as the more violent of The Spire's tools. In any official capacity, the two groups are not working in tandem, and any enforcer you meet is likely to take violent umbrage to the idea. It doesn't take a genius, however, to notice that The Enforcers tend to go after targets that act up against the interests of The Spire.
Whether one acts out doing something minor like denying The Spire their licensing fees or asking the question where such a patent is stored to double-check it, or more sizeable actions like The Northwest's efforts to democratize the workplace, it wouldn't take long for The Enforcers to come sniffing around the place. While the enforcers do not employ violence as a first attempted solution, threats of violence are high up on the list, and actual violence tends to follow shortly after.
Seeing as so much of what The Spire does is shrouded in secrecy, we see very little of it during The Clockwork Boy, and the towering spire that houses the organization, as well as The Clockmen, works more as an imposing site with ominous history than an active participant in the world. This is, however, exactly how The Spire likes it.
We do get a brief appearance by one of The Spire's members, a masked individual only identified as Creator's benefactor. It should be noted Creator does not much care for this classification and portrays the man more as a yoke on his back and/or a power-mad idiot king caught in his own puppet strings, depending on the kind of day he's having. Regardless, the Benefactor is the one responsible for hiring Creator for the Clockman project, and he has alluded to having at least partial command over The Enforcers. It is also apparent from his habit of wearing long hooded cloaks and golden theatre masks that the Benefactor has a flair for the dramatic in addition to a desire to keep his true identity hidden.
The Spire and the Benefactor are, as my pussyfooting around telling you what they're actually about might have revealed, supposed to be more important in later books of the Hearts In Clockwork series. As far as The Clockwork Boy is concerned, they're there more as a part of the setting and as an added pressure on Creator to drive his particular brand of crazy to the forefront in the most entertaining way.

Chimeris Ostara Escanor, 15 years old. At that age, she left Orlandor, the kingdom in which she was born, to return to her mother's homeland.
(English is not my native language, so there may be mistakes. Please be understanding)
The main branch of the Escanor family died out from the epidemic that raged on the lands of Meridian. At that time, life was barely glimmering only in the elderly Queen Irel. The concerned elders went after Lady Ostara, the former Princess of Meridian, who was given to a neighboring kingdom as a political hostage. At that time, this decision was justified - in addition to Ostara, the crown had two more heiresses. Now there is no one left.
The lady's self-esteem was definitely flattered that those who once used her as a bargaining chip are now begging for help. But she perfectly understood the degree of danger of the enterprise. The ideal solution for her would be to gain power without getting her hands dirty.
Lady Ostara had a daughter: born of King Orlandor, who had several other wives and a dozen heiresses and heirs. Unwanted. Problematic because of werewolf abilities that had to be carefully hidden.
In addition, the girl had the ability to alchemy, which means there was a chance to pick up a medicine. The high immunity of the shifters was supposed to protect her from rapid infection. So Ostara confronted everyone, including her daughter, with the fact that the young Chimeris would go to the land of Meridian.
Usually, the Meridian's light passed to the heiress at the moment of birth: from mother to daughter. But because of the current situation, he first returned to Queen Irel, and then, on her deathbed, moved on to Chimeris.

The story of Chimeris (if anyone is suddenly interested) : https://ficbook.net/readfic/13293038 __________________________
Every time I understand that it will be difficult to draw: both me and other artists who will have to interact with the character. But I choose complicated sleeves for Chimeris. I can't help myself: I'm trying to reproduce the image that stuck in my head.
In the animated series, each of the Escanor had a certain color scheme of clothes, from which they rarely departed (black and red for Phobos, turquoise, emerald and white for Elyon). But there were still such cases (Phobos' earthly clothes, Elyon's coronation outfit). So I took a chance to dress Chimeris in blue.
The idea here is that these are the heirloom colors of Orlandor - the place where the princess never found a home. She will eventually give up this blue in favor of those colors that you have already seen on her in adult form
There is no tiara or other jewelry that princesses usually wear in the drawing. There is only a homemade necklace. Father of Chimeris, who agreed to the indemnity in the form of Ostara, hoped that he would prove to everyone the superior position over the bride's house. And at the same time, he will strengthen his family with ancient blood.
But the marriage ritual and the ritual of baptism, based on magic, time after time put the Escanor family higher. So he refused the first one altogether: Ostara was in an unclear status as a result - either a concubine, or a prisoner, or a valuable guest. The girl born in this couple has the surname Escanor. And the king, having not received what he wanted, later treated this part of the family with a share of neglect and dislike.
There is an atmosphere of matriarchy on Metamoor (in my AU). But we must understand that these ideas were strengthened when all the kingdoms stopped bickering and came together under a common beginning, adopting the culture of Meridian. Until then, each of them had a different attitude towards women and men. Orlandor was quite close to the patriarchal way of life. Hence the power in the hands of the king and polygamy.
About lilies of the valley. I found a poem (unfortunately I don't know how to translate it without breaking the rhyme). Thanks to him, I have an image of a lily of the valley, as something pleasant, but not striking in its beauty. This image goes well with the life of Chimeris, at least with the stage of childhood and adolescence. Nothing was expected from the tenth princess, whose mother was never able to build a trusting relationship with the locals.
But at the same time, lilies of the valley are deadly poisonous, although you can't tell by their appearance. They should not be touched with bare hands, and a few berries are enough to die. And here is this contrast: the mortal danger from something mediocre is the way of development of Chimeris. After all, as a result, she reached very great heights, having dealt with all those who harmed her or her family because they underestimated her.
In addition, it is a reference to abilities in plant magic and alchemy. Lilies of the valley bloom in late May - early June. I'll just add that her birthday is May 27th.

Character Spotlight: Wesley Crusher
By Ames
Tumblr media
Grab your favorite hideous sweater! It’s time to talk about Wesley Crusher. He’s one of the most polarizing characters on TNG, with a lot of hate directed his way, but he also has a number of great Trek moments which we on A Star to Steer Her By are going to sort through today!
We can probably blame Gene Roddenberry for making this character so insufferable, especially in the first season when he seemed to have the easy solution for the engineering problem of any given episode. Gene designed him to characterize a person’s infinite potential and then slapdashedly shoehorned him into every place he could, and you’ll notice that right after the big writers room turnover, the child prodigy started feeling more like a character and less like a cheat code. Scroll on for the list below and listen to our chatter on this week’s podcast episode (warp over to timestamp 57:36) for all the dirt. Just unplug your nanite experiment first.

Best moments
Tumblr media
Don’t shut up, Wesley While I’ll give Wesley the deserved scrutiny in a moment for the absurd number of times in season one of TNG that he saved the day, we do have to give him some credit for figuring out that Lore was impersonating Data in “Datalore.” Even while pretty much everyone on the crew was telling him to shut up, Wes had it all figured out and topped it off by beaming Lore into space.
Tumblr media
Double dumbass on you! Wesley actually does get to shine during “Coming of Age,” an episode that really uses his youth to its advantage by having him take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. And he gets pretty far! He even figures out that Rondon is a Zaldan, so Wesley realizes that apologizing for getting run into himself is the wrong reaction for that culture and comes away looking like a badass.
Tumblr media
Teamwork makes the dream work Speaking of “Coming of Age,” Wesley is also this close to solving the dynamics relationships test first when he helps Mordock figure it out too. Wesley’s natural affinity for helping his crewmates is more important to him than getting the top score, which TAC Officer Chang takes into consideration in the final results. I’m not sure it helped much, but it’s a good character moment.
Tumblr media
You never forget your first “I'm never going to feel this way about anyone else,” Wesley says to Guinan after watching his first crush leave in “The Dauphin.” Strangely, it’s a very mature little conversation considering Wesley was ready to write Salia off as some kind of alien monster earlier in the episode. But he learns to accept her differences, score some relationship experience points, and get his first smooch.
Tumblr media
The minute you walk through that door they’re your team Slowly, the show starts putting Wesley in more age-appropriate situations in which he isn’t just saving the day, so it’s fitting for him to be overwhelmed when leading his first committee in “Pen Pals.” His team member Davies effectively takes over because Wes initially lacks confidence, but he soon takes charge and they work together to save Drema IV. Go team!
Tumblr media
You told me to improvise During the war games in “Peak Performance,” Wesley thinks outside the box and retrieves one of his many, many experiments from the Enterprise to use on the less advantaged Hathaway. While Riker initially accuses young Crusher of cheating, no one said he couldn’t sneak tools off the other ship, and it’s that kind of ingenuity that could be useful in a fight.
Tumblr media
Begin by letting go of your guilt, Wesley His mother Beverly may be on full display in “Remember Me” as we discussed last week, but Wesley also gets some interesting development. Back in “Where No One Has Gone Before” the Traveler saw potential in the child prodigy, and when the two of them use their special powers here to open the door for Dr. Crusher to return from the warp bubble, we witness some of that weird potential get unlocked.
Tumblr media
I’ve done it all because I want you to be proud of me We joke a lot on the podcast that Picard is secretly Wesley’s father, and it’s mostly for laughs. But when we get touching scenes between the two of them like the one in “Final Mission,” we think we may be onto something. Stranded on a planet without water, Wesley keeps an injured Picard alive (can’t say the same for Dirgo, but whatever), fueling paternity theories for years to come.
Tumblr media
I just lost the game After Wesley leaves the crew after “Final Mission,” his appearances are more methodical, and thus his character feels more and more appropriate each time. In “The Game,” he’s just visiting but his tendency to see how things work helps him and Lefler to discover that the video game everyone’s playing is actually harmful before the whole crew turns on them.
Tumblr media
I would like to add something to my testimony We get even more glimpses of how far Wesley has come when he’s attending Starfleet Academy in “The First Duty.” All of Nova Squadron has lied about the circumstances of Josh Albert’s flight accident, and it’s Wesley who comes clean in the end because he can’t bear the guilt and the dishonesty of covering up their nefarious actions. Take that, Locarno!
Tumblr media
These people deserve better than to be removed from their homes We found Picard’s actions inexcusable and entirely out of character in “Journey’s End” but you know who was actually on point? Wesley freakin’ Crusher. How on earth the boy was the only Starfleet-adjacent person to actually try to defend the colonists on Dorvan V is beyond us. It strikes us as opposing Federation ideals to force the colonists to move, and Wes knows that.
Tumblr media
I had to find my own path Finally, it is a fabulous resolution to the Wesley Crusher character for him to decide on his own to leave Starfleet and go with the Traveler to discover his true potential in “Journey’s End.” For too many kids, it’s the parents who put pressure on them to walk certain paths, and we celebrate Wes for finding his own. Ya know, until he’s randomly back in Starfleet for that cut scene from Nemesis for some reason.
Worst moments
Tumblr media
Wesley Saves the Day! Okay, I’m gonna lump all the obnoxious “Wesley Saves the Day!” instances into one blurb because it’s so damn repetitive. Every single time, Wesley – a child amidst some of Starfleet’s best of the best – figures out some impossible engineering problem before any of the adults in the room can, and we got so tired of it.
Whether it’s by getting drunk and taking over engineering only to use his reverse tractor beam in “The Naked Now,” or saving the day with the Traveler in “Where No One Has Gone Before,” or spotting Picard’s brain scan from across the room and deducing there are Ferengi shenanigans afoot in “The Battle,” or cracking the lock on the holodeck door while La Forge had already admitted defeat in “The Big Goodbye,” or seeing through Lore’s disguise as we mentioned above while all the adults in the room tell him to shut up in “Datalore,” or probably a ton of others all from the first season, it was clear no one knew how to write him except as some kind of magical prodigy. Alakazam!
Tumblr media
Keep off the grass It’s all the more clear that having a child character on the crew is just a cringey idea in “Justice.” Sure, it could have been anyone who broke the stringent rules of the Edo, but just the fact that it’s Wesley gallumphing through a flower bed like an uncoordinated doofus, destroying it utterly, makes us roll our eyes and seriously wish they’d let them execute the brat.
Tumblr media
Frosty the no-no man Let us not forget that it was Wesley who hit the captain with a snowball in “Angel One,” an immature and obnoxious little scene that seems to prove Picard’s point that letting children run roughshod all over the ship is an inconvenience at best and a liability at worst. And it happens to be the latter in this episode, because he ends up getting the whole ship sick with some disease!
Tumblr media
Drug Abuse Resistance Education is futile! While we can go on about Wesley’s whole exchange with Tasha about drug addiction in “Symbiosis,” what’s most egregious is how sheltered and clueless Wesley (normally some kind of child genius) has to be to not understand how narcotics work in the first place. It’s such a forced scene that we can just feel the Reagan Era war on drugs sentimentality written all over.
Tumblr media
I guess leaving’s gotten easy for you It’s easy to find fault with “The Outrageous Okona” – it is my least favorite TNG episode, after all. Literally everyone in this episode is annoying, and as usual, that includes Wesley who first idolizes the charming rogue, then seems really judgey of his independent and carefree lifestyle, and finally he sasses the guy into making him conclude the soap opera plot of the episode.
Tumblr media
How do you tell each other apart? It’s a pretty cheap joke when Wesley meets Mendon in “A Matter of Honor” and mistakes him for Mordock, whom we met in “Coming of Age.” I can’t tell if the writers were trying to make a racist “you people all look alike” kind of gag, but regardless, it makes Wesley look like an idiot for not knowing anything about Benzites and Benzite culture.
Tumblr media
Klingons hate surprise parties Everything Wesley does in “The Icarus Factor” is annoying. He blathers like a maniac at the impatient Klingon, but then takes that impatience to assume something greater is going on than just being fed up with an obnoxious tween like anyone else would be. But to make things more exasperating, the little twerp is right, as he always is, and throws Worf an Age of Ascension party. Ugh.
Tumblr media
I think that everything that’s been going wrong might be my fault It’s not until season three that, instead of saving the day as he did so many times already, Wesley actually screws up big by releasing the nanites in “Evolution.” While it’s refreshing to see Wes finally admit to some kind of flaw, his escaped nanites end up taking over the ship and start attacking people. And what’s worse is that he tries to lie about it until Guinan catches him!
Tumblr media
Broccoli on the side You’ll remember this from La Forge’s spotlight as well, but Geordi reveals in “Hollow Pursuits” that it was Wesley who initiated the cruel nickname “Broccoli” for Lt. Barclay. Wes, you might still be a child, but you’re in a room with adults so stop acting like one! I don’t know what’s worse: being such a dick to one of your coworkers, or all the adults in the room condoning it.
Tumblr media
I’m the one trapped in the bubble As if his misadventure in “Evolution” weren’t enough, Wesley botches another science experiment in “Remember Me” and nearly gets his mother killed in a pocket dimension! I know we just gave him some credit for bringing her back (though I mostly give that credit to the Traveler), someone’s got to stop letting Wes hook shit up to the warp core just because he’s the CMO’s kid! Nepotism much?
Tumblr media
The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth Here’s another Wesley moment that ended up on both lists because as much as we can see the character growth and lesson learned when he comes clean in “The First Duty,” it also needs to be said that he is fully prepared to follow Nick Locarno like a little sheep. Wesley almost certainly wouldn’t have done the right thing in the end if Picard hadn’t basically threatened him first!
Tumblr media
You are out! Auf wiedersehen! Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t poopoo Wesley’s fashion choices. Again. It’s a trainwreck of a fashion show. Sweater after sweater – all oversized, hideously patterned, and monstrously ugly. Ames has the full write up in an early blogpost: Wesley's Sweaters: An Unfashionable Collection, but this coral nightmare from “Where No One Has Gone Before” might take the cake.
Well, we’re off to go exploring with the Traveler, so that’s gonna wrap things up for this one. We’re back next week with more characters to spotlight and also more Enterprise to watch over on the podcast, which you can find on SoundCloud or wherever you listen. You can also get our help on your Academy entrance exams over on Facebook and Twitter, and watch out for those flowers!

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 050 - Archer Captured and T'Pol Down Bad
Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 2 Episode 25 - Bounty
Tumblr media
Getting close to the end of Season 2, meaning I'm more or less halfway through Enterprise.
The episode begins with a visitor desperate to talk to Archer. Specifically, someone who belongs to a new species called the Tellarites. He seems pleasant enough, but that's soon revealed to be a ruse, even still in the cold open, as a stuns Trip and then kidnaps Archer.
This episode is a follow up to Judgement! The Tellarite has been hired to return Archer after his prison break. Unfortunately it doesn't follow up on the Kolos stuff, but it does touch on a few of the issues of the Klingon justice system. Archer does a good job trying to play on the Tellarite's emotions to let him go, but it doesn't work. The action in Archer's half of the episode is good, especially his escape from the Klingon ship, and I like that Archer found a solution that works for both him and the Tellarite.
Trip is left in command of Enterprise as T'Pol is stuck in Decon with Phlox. We've had a few of these weird scenes in Decon, and they've all been really awkward, but this one is a new level. Weird leg shots aside, T'Pol is starting to show signs of paranoia, aggression and later horniness. At first I thought it might have been symptom of whatever pathogen is infecting her and phlox, but apparently it's part of the Vulcan mating cycle, and if she doesn't mate, she'll die. If you asked me to pick which members of the crew would be the first two to end up sleeping together, T'Pol and Phlox would not have been my first guess at any point in the series. The Vulcan 7 year mating cycle had been mentioned a few times before, I really wasn't expecting this. T'Pol is an attractive woman, and she does make my bisexual brain do things, but I really do have to question the motives behind the writer's choice to have an episode that is essentially dedicated Sweaty T'Pol running around Enterprise in her underwear while Horny out of her mind.
I feel like this one could have done with a couple redrafts particularly around it's B-Plot, but it was well put together. It just felt bizarre to watch.
Comparing my Enjoyment of this Episode with a Doctor Who Universe Story of the Same Title
Doctor Who - Tales From the TARDIS Volume 2 - Bounty
It's an audio story without it's own cover art, I don't have an image to put here, so I'm just throwing in a random image of the Eighth Doctor
Tumblr media
So, Bounty exists in a weird place it's a short audio original story, that's the only original story on a release that mostly consists of adaptations of other Doctor Who works.
It's set early on in the Sam era of the Eighth Doctor Adventure novels, specifically immediately after the first book in that range. The thing with narrated audio books like this is, you've only got one actor to sell the whole story, and Paul McGann, who is normally a brilliant Actor, really doesn't sound enthusiastic about this one. Whether or not it was that or the absolute lack of plot in the short story, getting through this one felt like a chore. Basically, an Alien steals the TARDIS Key, and a not very interesting chase across a beach happens. Not much to chew on, really. No interesting character work, because a random side audio story can't really do anything with the EDA characters, those books were still being written at the time. Not much world building, not much insightful commentary. This one was definitely a dud, and I think Paul McGann Narrating it agrees.
As weird as Enterprise's Bounty was, it at least made me feel something, it at least was entertaining. I can't say the same about Tales from the TARDIS's Bounty.
Some day, I'll get a Star Trek episode that shares a title with a good Doctor Who story.

Deleted Scene from 2009 Star Trek
We could have had this scene (written by J.J. Abrams, so all credit goes to him) in the 2009 Star Trek:
SPOCK PRIME (talking to YOUNG SPOCK) Then I ask that you do yourself a favor… put away logic, and do what feels right. The world you’ve inherited lives in the shadow of incalculable devastation… but there’s no reason you must face it alone.
And from around his neck, he removes the PENDANT that until now, we’ve only caught glimpses of. Places it on the table beside his younger self. The feeling in his eyes is profound…
SPOCK PRIME (CONT’D) This was a gift to me. Representing… a dream. One we were unable to fulfill. (softly) The way you can now.
And moves to the door. Stops. Offers the VULCAN SALUTE:
SPOCK PRIME (CONT’D) As my customary farewell would appear oddly self serving, I will simply say… good luck.
Their eyes hold. Spock turns, disappearing into the corridor. Young Spock stares at the empty doorway a beat, his mind a jumble of thoughts. Looks to the pendant… and realises it’s a HOLO-EMITTER. After considering a beat, he hits an activation button and a MOVING HOLOGRAPHIC MESSAGE materialises before him:
CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK. WILLIAM SHATNER. As always, brash, wry, confident — and SINGING:
KIRK/ SHATNER Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you… (stops, grins) I know I know, it’s illogical to celebrate something you had nothing to do with, but I haven’t had the chance to congratulate you on your appointment to the ambassadorship so I thought I’d seize the occasion… Bravo, Spock — they tell me your first mission may take you away for awhile, so I’ll be the first to wish you luck… and to say… (beat, emotional) I miss you, old friend.
… and we’re PUSHING IN on Young Spock, taking in the image of Kirk’s future self, the message, but above all —the clear, unquestionable friendship these two men had…
INT. CORRIDOR – CONTINUOUS
As Spock Prime walks off down the corridor, he passes right by a man conferring with a nurse — the man pauses, turns… it’s SAREK. Suddenly overcome by a feeling that the stranger who’s just passed him is… oddly familiar.
KIRK/SHATNER (V.O.) I suppose I’d always imagined us… outgrowing Starfleet together. Watching life swing us into our Emeritus years…
INT. STARBASE ONE – HANGAR – ETERNAL NIGHT
MUSIC BUILDING — glass walls reveal THE ENTERPRISE at dock, UTILITY CRAFTS floating around it, repairing. Standing at attention in rows, THE ENTERPRISE CREW — over four hundred of them wearing DRESS UNIFORMS — TRACK DOWN the faces, all proud:
KIRK/SHATNER (V.O.) I look around at the new cadets now and can’t help thinking… has it really been so long? Wasn’t it only yesterday we stepped onto the Enterprise as boys? That I had to prove to the crew I deserved command… and their respect?
And we STOP ON YOUNG KIRK. Composed, focused, proud. A man. And to every fan’s delight, finally wearing his YELLOW SHIRT. The FEDERATION COMMANDANT stands at a podium:
COMMANDANT This assembly calls Captain James Tiberius Kirk… Kirk breaks from formation, pivots, marches down the hangar — past UHURA… SULU… CHEKOV… SCOTTY. All Beaming. Notably absent, is Spock. Kirk ascends the stairs, snaps to attention:
COMMANDANT (CONT’D) Your inspirational valor and supreme dedication to your comrades are in keeping with the highest traditions of service and reflect utmost credit to yourself, your crew, and the Federation. By Starfleet Order 28455, you are hereby directed to report to Commanding Officer, USS Enterprise, for duty as his relief.
Kirk turns. Walks to… PIKE. In a wheelchair now, wearing an ADMIRAL’S UNIFORM. Overnight, his hair’s turned totally grey — but despite his trauma, his pride’s overwhelming. They SALUTE each other:
KIRK I relieve you, Sir.
PIKE … I am relieved.
He opens a BOX in his lap — glorious in repose, a MEDAL:
PIKE (CONT’D) And as Fleet Admiral, for your… unique solution to the Kobayashi Maru, it’s my honor to award you with a commendation for original thinking.
Pike containing a smirk, pins the medal to Kirk’s chest…
PIKE (CONT’D) (a touch choked) Congratulations, Captain.
KIRK Thank you, Sir.
Kirk turns to the crowd. Eyes shining. WILD APPLAUSE. OUR MUSIC SOARS. Bones leans in to Sulu, rolling his eyes:
BONES … Same ship, different day.
As Kirk rejoins his crew for hugs and congratulations, we go to the BACK of the hangar… SPOCK PRIME. Watching. Moved beyond words. He turns and leaves them to it… as he goes…
KIRK/SHATNER (V.O.) I know what you’d say — ‘It’s their turn now, Jim…’ And of course you’re right… but it got me thinking:
INT. STARFLEET HOSPITAL – EARTH – DAY
Our montage comes full circle as we END on Kirk’s transmission:
KIRK/SHATNER Who’s to say we can’t go one more round? By the last tally, only twenty five percent of the galaxy’s been chartered… I’d call that negligent. Criminal even — an invitation. You once said being a starship captain was my first, best destiny… if that’s true, then yours is to be by my side. If there’s any true logic to the universe… we’ll end up on that bridge again someday.
Stops, grins. Because this is the part he needs to say most…
KIRK/SHATNER Admit it, Spock. For people like us, the journey itself… is home.
Young Spock’s face. Lost in feelings that flood through him.

June of Doom Day 11
11. “We’re out of time.”
| Firearm | Backseat | Self-defense |
TW: blood oath, non-con kissing
A/N: Alternate Universe - Demons
~
'We're out of time.'
Nurse Chapel's words were still wandering through his head when Montgomery Scott entered the deserted crossroads, far from any civilization. In his trembling hands he held a small metal box, which he pressed close to his chest. He closed his eyes and swallowed. How had it come to this?
Of course... There was only one reason. Everything that was important to him. Everything he loved and valued.
'Leonard...'
The name flashed through his mind and he sighed deeply. His loved one had been infected on a mission with a bacterium for which there seemed to be no cure. If they didn't find a way soon, the CMO of the Enterprise would die.
Scotty shook his head to get rid of the horrible images.
The work of the scientific team was not progressing fast enough, so there was only one solution: a miracle!
Scotty did not know if his plan would work, but all the prayers had brought nothing.
'The opposite then...'
The engineer knelt down, put the box aside, and started digging a small hole in the sandy roadbed with his hands. He had no idea how deep it had to be for the ritual, so he just kept digging until his fingers hurt, bled, and he could take no more.
He took the metal box in his hands and gently placed it in the hole, thinking of what the box was filled with. It were many things, important to him personally. But he would now have to part with them. For Leonard.
The Scotsman filled the hole again and then straightened up, looking around. What should he do now?
Should he just stand still and wait? Was there a special magic formula?
He was about to leave, his head down low, and turned around, when suddenly a man stood right in front of him. He was startled and took a step back. Should it really have worked? Were the stories his wee grandmother had told him true?
"Hello, Montgomery," the stranger said with a smile.
How did he know his name?
Scotty eyed his counterpart. He was a handsome man with raven-black hair and cool blue eyes. He wore a black suit, was neatly dressed.
"H-hello," the engineer stammered, not knowing what to say.
The man chuckled. His human counterpart had just summoned a demon and the only thing he had to say was to return the 'hello'? Usually humans demanded what they wanted right away. But Montgomery Scott was apparently different.
"You called me. What can I do for you?"
Scotty cleared his throat briefly before finding his voice again.
"Ye... are a crossroad demon?"
Again he got a laugh in response and the man moved slowly toward him.
"Yes, honey. I'm a crossroad demon. My name is Khan," he introduced himself and it amused him that the human in front of him kept backing away. He was afraid; the demon felt that clearly.
"But you don't answer a question with a question."
He raised his hand and grabbed his counterpart by the arm. Immediately Scotty stopped as if rooted to the spot. The power emanating from this demon was really incredibly intimidating and strong. Usually, he was not a coward after all!
"E-excuse me," he stammered, barely able to control his words, and Khan began to slowly move around him.
"So, what can I do for you?" he asked again, and Scotty swallowed the lump in his throat.
"I don't know if ye can grant me my wish?"
Khan was standing just behind him and now he smiled slyly, leaned over and whispered in his ear, "Honey, I can give you anything you want."
A shiver ran down the Scotsman's spine as he felt the cold breath.
My God... What was he doing here? He was talking to a demon and wanted to make a pact with it.
Maybe it had been a mistake to come here. But Khan had said that he could do anything.
"My... boyfriend... He is seriously ill. All I want is to find a cure and save him. I just want for the bacterium to disappear and for Leonard to be healed. He shall survive," Scotty summed up his wish and Khan chuckled again, finally coming to a stop in front of him.
Humans were really stupid sometimes.
Mr. Scott could have anything he wanted, but he gave up his wish for someone else. Love could be so strong. Such a powerful feeling that made people forget their selfishness. How Khan would have wished to feel it himself sometimes. But he had forgotten what it felt like.
And yet... the man in front of him triggered some feeling in him, touched his cold soul in a way no one else ever had. It was strange.
"If that is your wish, then I will grant it. But, you know the price, don't you?"
Scotty swallowed. Yes... yes, he knew the price, but it was worth it to him. For Leonard, he simply had to give everything. Even if it was the most valuable asset he owned.
"M-my soul."
Khan ran a hand over Scott's face and nodded.
"Very true, Montgomery. Your soul. In ten years I'll be at your doorstep to take it. So if you make a pact with me, you're mine. Are you sure that's what you want?"
Scotty nodded, not quite as firmly resolved as others had been, but he nodded.
"If that's the case... Then let's seal the deal, shall we?"
Again Khan smiled. The seal was his favorite part of making a pact.
He grabbed Scotty's arm and carved a deep cut into the human's arm and his own. Blood gushed from the wounds and Khan pressed them together.
"My blood for you. Your blood for me."
Slowly, he leaned in and kissed Scotty. The human didn't seem to want it, but that was how it usually was. Khan could understand. These humans had just sold their souls and then they were supposed to kiss a demon, too?
He, however, enjoyed it because he knew that he now had this human all to himself. He belonged to him from now on and no one could take him away.
When he was done, Scotty stared at him with wide eyes as if wondering if that had been it. Had he sold his soul to a demon so easily?
"Well then... take a backseat and let me do my job. See you in ten years."
With a wink and the typical smile, Khan disappeared, simply vanishing into thin air.
Scotty looked at the spot where the demon had been standing only a moment before. What had he done?

Volte-Face: Chapter 37
Read on A03 or FFN
Pairings: Christopher Pike x OFC (Aalin)
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3.4k
Summary: On her first mission as a member of Starfleet, interpreter Aalin Matthews is stranded on a war-torn world ten days’ journey from a haven. Safe passage for Federation personnel has been revoked. Hostile forces are hunting the orphans she is protecting. As she and the children make the dangerous trek, the crews of both Enterprise and Shenzhou work behind the scenes to aid them.
Banned from intervening, from returning to the planet, from scanning for Aalin’s location, Captain PIke must decide whether to ignore the prohibitions or risk intensifying the conflict, a choice complicated by his personal feelings for Aalin. And Spock must come to terms with his decision allowing her to remain behind; should the worst occur, it will be the first time the young lieutenant has lost someone under his command. Both Pike and Spock undertake a dangerous mission among the brutal people who invaded their neighbors in order to protect Aalin and the children and end the war.
Excerpt:
Five Months Ago Enterprise Orbiting Varia
As Aalin woke the wall and overhead lights gradually illuminated. Fluttering lids scratched against eyes like sandpaper, sore muscles protested movement, repeated swallows granted no relief to a dry throat. Skin on her chest and left arm, tender to touch, itched. Her head hurt. She propped on elbows and her eyes swept the space. Its floor to ceiling windows were one-way, transparent into the room, opaque to its occupant. Medical equipment littered the walls parallel to her bed.
A vague memory surfaced, someone at her side smoothing and tucking a blanket around her.
What happened?
Conversation sounded nearby. “... Ms. Matthews … Varian language translation … no solution …” Easing up and out of the bed, feet bare rendering her footfalls inaudible, and clothed in the knee length cross-tied blue gown of Sickbay, she followed the voices.
M’Benga, Chapel, a science officer, and their captain faced a three-dimensional hologram. With more force than necessary, Pike’s hand cast the picture onto a wall-mounted screen which flattened the intertwined patterns into rows of individual images. He pinched the bridge of his nose then said, “Again, Spock, from the beginning using words with fewer syllables.”
“We have little accurate data to work with. All recordings made of Varian speech prior to Ms. Matthew’s collapse were truncated. Software interpreted the frequencies beyond what Federation science believed possible as erroneous and eliminated them.”
“Damn foolish design choice,” M’Benga muttered. “Which came too close to claiming a life.”
Pike couldn’t stifle a slight wince. He said, as if repeating another’s words, “I can’t point to a concrete example, but the recordings of their language seem off.”
“Sir?”
“An observation Ms. Matthews made. Months ago. During a briefing at the State Department. She downplayed the assessment and no one, including myself, followed up on it.”
Reaching the conference room, Aalin stopped at its threshold, behind them, silent, and unnoticed. She tuned out the Vulcan’s continuing presentation instead studying the waveforms displayed on the screen. “Are those voices?”
