A have a lot of fun painting ground sloth, as you will have noticed by now.
These two room mates (as historians will say) enjoy some quite cuddling. The whole vibe of the scene was inspired by Byzantine iconography.
Eremotherium was truly colossal, nearly as large as the more famous Megatherium.

Weretober 2023 - Part 2: Lives of the Werebeasts of Urvara
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, to cap off Weretober 2023, the final batch exploring the lives of Werefolk in my setting of Beast Fables. From assassins to soldiers to ronin to nasty diseases, there are many sides to being a werebeast in Urvara!
A famous Were-Tarantula Hawk assassin readies for combat against a berserker were-shrew.
A were-sea lion stumbles upon a rare find: a black pearl! Surely this will give her clan honor! Unbenkowest to her however, she is being watched by a couple of merfolk. The Mer-tiger shark wants to "deal" with her, to keep their society a secret, but the Mer-octopus urges caution instead.
For most people, a person's animal form is either from one parent or the other. In much rare cases however, one could get an animal form that's a hybrid of their parents's beast form! Walter Raja Surrey here is a Liger, and has all of the hybrid's advantages, without the myriad of health problems associated with them!
A member of the last group of Were-Diprotodons shows an archeology student and an art history student an example of a hunting boomerang, otherwise known as a karli. Alongside being both a great example of art and a useful tool, it's big enough to double as a club.
A werefox succumbs to that most feared of diseases among were-mammal kind, rabies. Certain were-folk, like werebirds can fight off the disease, while others like were-crocodilians seem to be immune to almost anything.
A were-rhinoceros beetle gets treated for cordyceps. While not the lethal, muscle and nervous system hijacker of their wild counterparts, it still hurts, and requires immediate attention, lest it begins to interfere with the magics governing transformation as well as tissue damage.
A traveling group of were-elephantines, including a mammoth. While giants to a regular person, they themselves are dwarfed by the creator of the roads they travel upon, called the Titan Roads. These roads were built by Were-sauropods.
A turbulent priest preaches the cause for justice, and the betterment of society as a whole. A priest of the Ten Faced God, he dons the silver and black to denote his devotion to the face of Justice.
A were-raccoon dog ronin thought his speed and agility would win the day against the lumbering were-eremotherium, who himself is in service of a large empire known as Tartessos (basically Not!Spain). The risk the ronin took was calculated, but BOY was he BAD at math!
And finally, the classic Werewolf. A Durroyan werewolf charges with a bayonet, steely determination in his eyes and faith that discipline will win the battle through. A Gevaudanois werewolf counter charges with tooth, claw and sabre in hand, confident that courage and ferocity will win the day.

More Fossil Pokemon!
The second set of Fossil Pokemon for Pokemon Zenith and Nadir, my Ecuador and Galapagos Islands inspired region!
Revived from the Sharp Fossil is Kitrium, a Rock/Fighting Type ground sloth Pokemon, specifically the eremotherium!
Tumblr media
Kitrium are thought to have lived peaceful lives, using their sharp claws to grip ancient tree branches for movement. It also has been known to sharpen its claws by scratching them on trees and rocks. Despite its good offence, however, it lacks in speed, and it is believed that its slow movements contributed to its extinction when there was less food and more predators.
Kitrium evolves into Slotheral, who is still Rock/Fighting but gains a more fierce side to it, true to its name.
Tumblr media
Slotheral’s temperament considerably worsens upon evolving, and it can move unexpectedly quickly during the heat of combat. While some say how its primal instincts were kicked in when it evolved, others say the rocks that have hardened on its body constantly irritate and hurt it, causing all its attacks to be because of unseen pain.

National Fossil: Mexico
It was a very tight race for the title of National Fossil of Canada, but in the end Anomalocaris (28,3 %) won over Tiktaalik (26,7 %) and Borealopelta (23,3 %). So this week you can vote on what should be Mexico‘s National Fossil.
Again: it could be a fossil that is just exceptionally well preserved and beautiful, had a huge impact on paleontology and our knowledge of the past, is very common/representative of the area, is beloved and famous in the public eye, is just a very unique and interesting find, or has any other justification.
My suggestions:
Tumblr media
Mexican Amber: Okay, this one isn‘t technically a fossil, but I think amber is always a very unique window into the past, showing us exceptionally well preserved specimen of some the tiny and fragile things that often get overlooked. Mexican amber is from the Miocene and many insects and other arthropod species have been described from it
Tumblr media
Columbian mammoth: Very recently the largest known fossil site for mammoths (Mammoth Central) has been discovered during airport constructions near Mexico city. More than 200 specimen have been found here, which is more than 3 times the amount of material found in the next biggest site
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eremotherium: One of the biggest ground sloths ever, they are among the originally South American animal groups that established themselves in North America after the two continents connected (Art by Gabriel Ugueto)
Tumblr media
Glyptotherium: The giant armored armadillo-cousin is another one of the animals that migrated into North America after it connected to South America
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Megalodon: There are many marine fossil sites in Mexico and some include Megalodon, the famous extinct shark and terrifying movie monster (my only problem with this is that Megalodon had a global distribution, so assigning it to one country feels a bit like cheating)
Tumblr media
Monster of Aramberri: Speaking of giant sea monsters, here is a bit of a wild card. The “Monster of Aramberri“ are the remains of a giant pliosaur, possibly related to Kronosaurus. Even though it has been discovered in the 80s, the mysterious fossil still has not been formally described, but it is estimated to be among the biggest pliosaurs that ever lived (Art by Dmitri Bogdanov)
PS: I had a much harder time finding suggestions for Mexico than I did with the US and Canada. I‘m sure I missed some good ones. I also didn‘t include any dinosaurs because from what I could find most of them are either much better known from other countries, are disputed species or are very recent and don‘t feel “well known“ enough.

Megatherium
(temporal range: 5-0.010 mio. years ago)
[text from the Wikipedia article, see also link above]
Megatherium (/mɛɡəˈθɪəriəm/ meg-ə-THEER-ee-əm; from Greek méga (μέγα) 'great' + theríon (θηρίον) 'beast') is an extinct genus of ground sloths endemic to South America that lived from the Early Pliocene[1] through the end of the Pleistocene.[2] It is best known for the elephant-sized type species M. americanum, sometimes called the giant ground sloth, or the megathere, native to the Pampas through southern Bolivia during the Pleistocene. Various other smaller species belonging to the subgenus Pseudomegatherium are known from the Andes.
Megatherium is part of the sloth family Megatheriidae, which also includes the similarly giant Eremotherium, comparable in size to M. americanum, which was native to tropical South America, Central America and North America as far north as the southern United States. Only a few other land mammals equaled or exceeded M. americanum in size, such as large proboscideans (e.g., elephants) and the giant rhinoceros Paraceratherium. Megatherium was first discovered in 1788 on the bank of the Luján River in Argentina. The holotype specimen was then shipped to Spain the following year wherein it caught the attention of the paleontologist Georges Cuvier, who was the first to determine, by means of comparative anatomy, that Megatherium was a sloth.[3] Megatherium became extinct around 12,000 years ago during the Quaternary extinction event, which also claimed most other large mammals in the New World. The extinction coincides with the settlement of the Americas, and one and potentially multiple kill sites where M. americanum was slaughtered and butchered is known, suggesting that hunting could have caused its extinction.
