Of All The Places to Meet
Tumblr media
Summary: When the reader gets into a bad accident, she doesn’t expect to meet her true mate at the same time...
Pairing: Alpha/Firefighter!Dean x Omega!reader
Word Count: 2,500ish
Warnings: language, car accident, major injury
A/N: Enjoy!
_______
“She’s fucking jammed in there good. We need to cut her out.” You blinked open your eyes slowly, very aware of how…off the world seemed. Your head was killing you, that was for sure. Something about the fact you were upside down in your car told you that had something to do with it.
Lazily you turned your head at the scent of vanilla and tobacco, humming at the pleasant smell in the otherwise metallic and burnt rubber scented air. Beside you, crawled in your passenger window on his back, laying on top of your roof was a pair of gorgeous green eyes staring back.
“She’s awake!” called the man, his attention on you the whole time. “Hey, sweetheart. You were in an accident. I’m gonna get you out of here.”
“Smell pretty,” you murmured, fighting off the urge to pass out again. “I’m gonna…”
“Miss. Miss, try to-”
Dean’s POV
“Fuck, she’s out cold again,” I said. I could see where her door was pinned against her left side. It’d be a miracle if she hadn’t shattered her hip or femur. My stomach churned once more, hands gripping the center console that was partially cracked and pushed forward.
This was not how this was supposed to happen. You don’t meet your true mate in a goddamn car wreck when she’s critically injured. You just don’t.
And now there was another problem.
Alpha’s were notoriously protective of their mates, especially true mates. That instinct skyrocketed when they were injured, even something as small as a cut thumb.
Seeing, smelling, my true mate when she was broken and battered and hurt out of her mind?
Yeah, there was no way I was going to be able to physically get away from this little omega.
“Winchester! Let the medic get in there and we’ll work on getting the driver's door off,” called Benny. My gut said to stay but I also knew she needed someone more qualified than me to attend to her at this moment. Reluctantly, I climbed out and ran around to the outside of the car, a few guys already working on ripping the metal apart.
“She’s got the neck brace on!” called the EMT. “We’re ready for whenever she’s loose.”
Twenty minutes later we finally had the door off, a backboard slipped underneath her and she was being pulled out of the vehicle.
The EMT’s packed her up and somehow she wasn’t bleeding out. There was always the chance for internal injuries though. I wandered over to the back of the ambulance, climbing into the back much to the displeasure of the two EMT’s.
“What the hell are you doing Dean?” said Benny. I chucked my helmet at him, Benny barely catching it. “De-“
“She’s my true mate. I can’t…I need to go.” He sighed but nodded.
“Let him ride with you. I’ll pick him up at county later. Dean?” I nodded as they started to close the doors. “Listen to the doctors and stay out of their way. That’s how you can keep her safe.”
I nodded as they shut the doors, my focus going to the woman strapped to the stretcher. She looked so broken, covered in blood and scrapes.
I squeezed her hand, a gentle twitch of her finger in my palm.
“You’ll be okay, Omega. I promise.”
Reader’s POV
You blinked open your eyes slowly, grateful this time you were right side up. The bed was soft and warm even if your body felt achy. A buzz was thrumming through your veins as you looked down, the drugs in your system keeping you calm as you took in the sight.
Your entire left leg was bruised. Literally every spec of skin was bruised.
And then you saw the monstrous contraption encasing it, pins holding your thigh in place. Beeping rang through the room as your heart rate shot up, eyes fixated on your wiggling toes.
“Okay. Okay, I can still walk,” you breathed out, inhaling deeply. “Hopefully.”
A wave of exhaustion hit as the door opened, an Alpha!nurse walking inside. “Well good evening Y/N! How are we feeling?”
“Shitty.” You frowned and closed your eyes again.
“Do you remember what happened?” he asked, checking the monitors and then bending your arms.
“Uh. I was driving on the highway and then I woke up here,” you said, nose twitching. “Something smelled pretty.”
He just hummed and checked your leg that wasn’t secure, offering you a smile. “I’m going to check a few things and then I’ll bring the doctor in.”
An hour later you were laying back in bed, staring at the ceiling and trying to wrap your head around everything the doctor had said. Intensive physical therapy would be needed for months and even then your leg may never be a hundred percent again. You had a concussion and wouldn’t be able to drive a car for six months most likely. You’d need to take a leave of absence from work. Although that one might not be that bad actually considering how stressful it’d been lately.
On top of all that, apparently there was some creeper Alpha firefighter hanging out in the waiting area.
Waiting for you.
Because your day hadn’t been unsettling enough as it was.
Before long you were fast asleep, hoping that tomorrow you’d wake up and find out this was just a nightmare.
“Good morning Y/N!” said your nurse, Alfie. You twitched your eye, not deterring his chipper mood one bit. “Feeling any better today?”
“We’re going to have problems if you’re always this bubbly when I wake up, Alfie,” you grumbled, sighing as pain shot up your leg. “If you could just do me a favor and cut off my leg, that’d be appreciated.”
“Oh, don’t be drastic, Y/N. I know the doctor wants to wean you off the pain medicine as soon as possible but it shouldn’t be that bad.”
“Did he shatter his femur yesterday? No? When he does he can talk to me about taking away my pain meds,” you said, hitting the button for morphine but nothing coming out. “Alfie. I need something.”
“The doctor gave strict orders to have you on only over the counter-”
“It fucking hurts!” you shouted, surprised at how agitated you were. Normally you were always kind and polite to strangers. But this? You were in pain and you didn’t have the patience to be a socially acceptable human being today.
Alfie looked sympathetic but his reply was cut off when a man with disheveled hair and dirty clothes came barging in the room. Strike that. The creeper Alpha firefighter that was stalking you outside was suddenly barging in the room.
“What are you doing to her?” he spat out, venom in every word. You could hear him audibly growl as he stalked over to Alfie, the poor Alpha shrinking back like he was an Omega cornered in a dark alley.
“Hey! Get out of…” you paused when you caught his scent. The heart rate monitor beeped dangerously fast, both of them turning to you. The scary Alpha firefighter suddenly made you calm, his scent giving off clear signals.
Relax Omega. You’re safe and protected.
“You can’t be in here,” said Alfie as he got his wits back. He grabbed the firefighter, shrieking when the man growled so loud it sounded like he’d gone feral.
“Alfie’s right,” you said, pain filling your heart as you breathed deeply. You had no idea who this Alpha was but you knew his instincts were in overdrive. “You’re filthy and this is an ICU. Go home and clean yourself up. Come back this afternoon and we’ll talk then. That’s an order, Alpha.”
“Yes, omega,” he said softly, nodding once. “Are you okay?”
“Later, Alpha.” He apologized briefly to Alfie before leaving, Alfie relaxing when his scent went with him. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I don’t know how you got him to believe you like that. He was this close to snapping.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s my true mate.” Alfie raised his eyebrow and cocked his head.
“We can do a blood test. And make him take one too before we let him back in. On second thought, that’s absolutely happening.”
You raised a hand, wincing as pain pulsated through your leg. “Tell him I asked him to please take the test so he doesn’t take it out on the staff. Please.”
“Will do.” He paused as he exited the room. “I’ll talk to the doctor about your pain meds, see if we can make the steps down not so drastic.”
“Thanks Alfie.”
You were tired when you woke up after lunch and physical therapy. So much so you could barely open your eyes. You wouldn’t think you could be all that physical with a damn broken femur but after they moved and worked you to the point of shouting, you’d changed your mind quickly.
A large, calloused hand stroked your cheek, wiping away a stray tear that fell. The air smelled sweet, like pine and vanilla. “Omega. How can I help the pain?”
“You being here helps,” you murmured, his long fingers brushing away more tears. You squeezed your eyes when pain ripped through you. “They say I don’t need the morphine but I only can sleep today when I’m exhausted from the pain. I don’t know how I’m supposed to get through this.”
“With me, Omega. I’ll talk to the doctors. You were injured only a day ago. They must  have missed something if it hurts so badly.” He bent down and kissed your temple, your eyes fluttering open. “Please don’t worry. I’ll be here for you every step of the way.”
You stared up into his green eyes, surprised to find him smiling at you. “Why are you so handsome?”
“Makes up for my lack of singing ability,” he chuckled. He brushed your hair behind your ear, his scent coming off in powerful waves to soothe you. “I’m sorry for scaring you earlier. I know you don’t quite know me but I was one of the responders to your accident and when I scented you…my instincts went a little crazy.”
“It’s alright,” you whispered, a flash of pain rising up again. “Can you find the doctor?”
“Yes Omega,” he murmured. “Try to rest.” He got up from the nearby seat and hummed. “I’m Dean.”
“Y/N,” you said, shutting your eyes once more.
“I’ll make it better Y/N. I promise.”
Two Weeks Later
“Hey,” said Dean when he entered your hospital room. “I heard you’re getting discharged today.”
You grumbled from bed, wearing one of his fire station hoodies. He pulled the curtains open, smiling wide as you tugged the hood up.
“Aren’t you excited to be getting out of here?” He had a point. You were happy to be leaving, with some pain medication too. But your leg was still incredibly fucked and you couldn’t go back to your apartment. Not when it was on the third floor. Dean luckily lived in a ranch style but you hated imposing on him.
“I wish I didn’t have to move in with you.” His smile fell as you groaned. “I meant like this. Because I’m hurt and can’t be alone. I wish we could be like a normal pair of mates.”
“Hey,” he said. He sat on the edge of the bed by my good leg, lightly stroking over the bonding gland in my neck. “We are normal. We just need to practice a bit more patience than other true mates.”
“You mean how I can’t have sex for months until my leg is healed. It’s going to drive both of us crazy to wait.”
“We can bond, just without the knotting. We’re already scent bonded and as long as we don’t stay away from each other for too long-“
“You mean an hour tops? You’re stuck by my side for the next three months minimum. I might not walk correctly again. I might always-“
He put his hand over your mouth, annoyance rising in your veins.
“I’m your Alpha, even if you don’t bear my mark yet. I never want to hear you say you think I’m stuck with you. Being with you is the only thing I could ever want. We will figure this out and I will not mate you until you are fully recovered. Am I clear, Omega?”
The use of your title from his lips sent fuzzy, calming feelings throughout your body, your head nodding without thinking. Large fingers gently stroked your cheek, a soft hum escaping him.
“Are you ready to go home with me?”
“Okay, Alpha. You can take me home.”
“You all set?” asked Dean later that evening. You were in bed, leg propped up on some pillows. Dean had spent the day with you, helping you get discharged and set up his house so it was a bit more friendly for you to get around in.
“As good as I can be,” you said, watching him disappear into the closet, returning in a fire station shirt and a pair of skinny black joggers. “You have work?”
He chuckled and shook his head. “No, no. Just getting comfy for the night. I can order us some food. I’m sure you’re starving.”
“A little,” you said, Dean sitting beside you, urging you to curl into his side. “Thank you for helping me that day. The accident.”
“It’s my job, sweetheart,” he said, pressing a gentle kiss to your temple. “I’m just happy you’re still here. You got lucky.”
“Hell of a way to meet your mate.” He hummed, quietly stroking your bare arm with the tips of his fingers. “I’m really glad I’m not doing this on my own.”
“You’ll never be on your own ever again, Omega. I promise.”
“I know, Alpha. My leg might never heal the same way but at least I got one good thing out of this situation.” He smiled, brushing your hair behind your ear. “This comfy ass bed.”
He rolled his eyes with a smirk, kissing the top of your head before he got up. “Alright. With that, I’m off to go be your manly Alpha and hunt down some food for us.”
“You mean order takeout?” you teased. He tossed a pillow at you, laughing lightly.
“For that I’m ordering pineapple on the pizza.” You dropped your jaw, Dean laughing a bit harder, his scent the calmest you’d ever smelled it. “I’m kidding. I’m not deranged.”
“Good cause true mates or not, that is not happening,” you said.
“Glad we can agree on it,” he said. “What about a supreme?”
“Now we’re talking,” you said. He left the room with a nod, returning a few minutes later with a soft smile. “What?”
“Nothing. Just really glad to finally have found you. It’s…easy with you.”
You knew what he meant, patting the spot next to you. He returned to your side with a smile, pulling you to rest against his chest. His scent filled the air, a relaxed cozy feeling settling in your bones.
“Yes, yes it is Alpha,” you said, taking a deep inhale, exhaling slowly. “It absolutely is.”

Part 1 - Who’s Afraid Of Little Old Me?
Avalon, California, was a gilded cage with ocean views, where the houses were as polished as the facades people wore. It was in one such manicured home where your story paused.
“Mija, you’re wasting your life with these... these dreams of yours! ¡No seas tan estúpida!” Your mother’s voice was a razor wrapped in velvet, cutting into you as you packed the last of your belongings into an old, battered suitcase.
The room was a mausoleum of your former life, with its pristine walls adorned with academic accolades and a full-length mirror that once reflected a girl desperate to please. Now, it only mirrored your resolve.
“I’m saving it, not wasting it,” you shot back, the words tumbling from your lips like brave soldiers in battle. You tucked a framed photo of your childhood self – the one with the broadest, most hopeful eyes – into the suitcase's side.
Your mother’s silhouette filled the doorway, her arms crossed in the silent indictment. “And what about the family reputation? Our standing in the community?”
You zipped up the suitcase, and the sound of a definitive line drawn. “What about my happiness, Mamí? What about living a life that’s actually mine? With someone who won’t pick on me like I’m still a child?”
She scoffed dismissively, a sound that stung like salt in an open wound. “Esos gringos no saben nada. Happiness is a luxury for those who can afford to be foolish.”
You locked eyes with her in the mirror, your own gaze hardened like forged steel. “Then consider me a fool.”
The house seemed to hold its breath as you shouldered past her, suitcase in hand. Your father stood in the hallway, a silent sentinel. His eyes, a mirror of your own, flickered with something that might have been pride or sorrow – or both.
“Daddy,” you whispered, pausing for a moment.
He cleared his throat, a rumble from deep within. “You always were the stubborn one,” he murmured, his voice barely above a soft-spoken whisper. “Be careful. Call me anytime you need me.”
A nod was all you could muster before you descended the staircase, each step a drumbeat to your newfound freedom. The door closed behind you with a finality that echoed through your bones. The California sun dipped low, as if bowing to your courage.
The suitcase wheels rumbled against the cobblestone path, a small but sure declaration of your departure. Behind you, the house – a beautiful prison of expectation and familial duty – faded into just another part of the landscape.
You didn't look back.
Considering it was your first time flying in an airplane, first class at that, you were anxious. Not about actually being in the plane around people or the way the lady in the seat across from your aisle coffee smelled like someone took a fancy shit, but because you were moving in with a couple that you trusted yet, hardly knew.
Mary and John Winchester were rough around the edges, but they meant well. They knew what happened in your household, how toxic it was, and invited you to stay with them in Lawerence. Plus, you would be able to keep your job. Mary was head of Neurosurgery and earned you a spot as a surgical intern. Working hard or hardly working, am I right? You thought to yourself, smiling to yourself.
And boy, were these ‘gringos’ rich. Not only did they offer you that extra guest room in their house, but they also bought you your first-class seat, in which your butt was in right now.
You knew John was a respected detective, and with his income mixed with Mary’s, they made bank.
You also knew they had two sons. John and Mary mentioned their names, but you knew the youngest worked for the ADA, and the oldest worked as a firefighter.
Cool. Wonder what that's like, you tilt your head in thought.
A stable work life, home life, and family. But not all ‘picture-perfect’ families meant they were truly picture perfect.
And that was for you to figure out.
The airplane descended through the cotton candy clouds, and the world below began to take shape—a patchwork of fields and roads that would soon become your new reality. Your heart danced a nervous tango with the seatbelt across your lap, anticipation tightening with every drop in altitude.
The captain's voice crackled through the cabin, announcing the imminent landing in Lawrence. You straightened up, smoothing the fabric of your jeans as if to iron out the last creases of your past life.
When the wheels kissed the tarmac, you felt a jolt, not unlike the one that had propelled you out of your family’s house. You collected your single suitcase from the overhead bin—a symbol of your fresh start—and made your way through the aisle with a resolve that echoed the click-clack of your boots on the aircraft's floor.
The airport was small but buzzing with life, a hive of reunions and farewells. You stood for a moment at the arrival gate, scanning the crowd until you saw them.
Mary's presence was undeniable. She stood with a grace that spoke of her surgical precision, her eyes warm and welcoming. John, equally imposing in his own right, had the stance of a man who had weathered storms and could chart a course through any adversity.
They spotted you almost immediately, and Mary’s smile widened as she opened her arms. “There she is! Welcome to Kansas!”
You stepped into her embrace, the scent of antiseptic mingling with a soft perfume—a stark contrast to the oppressive aroma of your mother's overwhelming floral scents. “Thank you, Mary,” you smiled, grateful for the genuine warmth.
John extended his hand, which you shook firmly, finding in his grip the silent support of a seasoned detective. “Good to have you here. We’ve got the guest room all set up for you,” he said, his voice a deep timbre of reassurance.
You nodded, your eyes meeting his. “I can’t thank you both enough for this opportunity.”
As you walked through the airport, with Mary’s hand lightly on your back and John carrying your suitcase, you felt the weight of your old life lifting. The conversation was light, peppered with Mary’s questions about your flight and John’s quips about Kansas being the true heart of America.
Once in the car, the grilling starts. “So, how are you doing, hun?” Mary asks curiously, mainly because she’s concerned and trying to make sure you’re comfortable.
“Oh, you know, as good as you can be while moving state from state.” You remark as politely as possible, trying not to seep tension into the car ride.
“I hope you feel better. When we get to the house, you’re welcome to rest. I don’t cook very well,” She clears her throat, shrugging, “But I can give you some money to order something in?”
“I couldn’t do that, but thank you. It’s late, anyways. I’ll wait till tommorow morning.”
“Okay. Just as along as you’re comfortable.” Mary winks, a soft, motherly smile on her face.
You nod, meeting her smile with the same.
John pulls the Volkswagen van into the driveway and puts it in park, shutting the engine off. “Home sweet home.”
You sigh and step out of the car, staring at the home. The house is a two-story structure with a prominent green exterior. It features white trim around the windows and roof edges, contrasting nicely with the green. The front door is wooden with a rich, warm tone. There are two windows on the upper floor and one window on either side of the front door on the ground floor. A chimney extends from the left side of the roof, indicating a fireplace inside.
A well-maintained lawn adorned with various small plants and flowers. A concrete pathway leads to three steps up to a small porch area before reaching the wooden front door.
Mary leads you up to where your room is at and it seemed to be one of her boy’s old nurseries, but now the wall was decorated with two old band posters, The Beatles and a Zeppelin poster. Huh. The bed had a floral blanket and a navy sheet under it. There were two pillows in a white silk covers and a lamp on the beside table.
“John and I are gonna hit the hay, so, goodnight, love.” Mary waves from the doorframe, giving you one last glance before heading off.
“Goodnight,” You reply, setting your suitcase down beside your bed and lay back on your bed.
Tumblr media
In the locker room, you changed into your scrubs, the fabric feeling foreign yet exciting against your skin. You tucked your hair under a surgical cap and checked yourself in the mirror. Ready.
The hospital corridors were a maze of activity, doctors and nurses moving with a sense of urgency that was almost palpable. You found your way to the intern's lounge, where a group of young doctors was gathered, pouring over patient charts and sipping on coffee as if it were a lifeline.
That's when you met her — Charlie Bradbury. With her vibrant red hair and a stack of comic books under her arm, she was a splash of color in the sterile environment. She noticed you immediately, her green eyes lighting up with an impish sparkle.
"Hey, you must be the new kid! I'm Charlie, your friendly neighborhood genius slash intern. Welcome to the chaos!" she greeted you with an outstretched hand, adorned with quirky rings.
"Thanks, I'm..." you began.
"Don't tell me," she interrupted playfully, "You're the one who just flew in from Cali, right? Mary's been raving about you."
You chuckled, feeling a sense of relief wash over you. "Guilty as charged."
Charlie showed you around, her chatter filling the spaces between the bustle of the hospital. She introduced you to the other interns, the nurses, and even the grumpy guy who ran the coffee cart. Throughout the day, you shadowed her as she confidently navigated patient care, inserting IV lines with precision and calming anxious patients with her quirky humor.
Despite the exhaustion that came with the endless rounds and the mountain of new information, you felt a sense of accomplishment. You were doing this, really doing it — and you were not alone.
In the afternoon, Mary tasked you with delivering first aid kits to the local fire department as part of a community outreach program. You welcomed the break from the hospital walls and made your way to the fire station with a box of supplies in tow.
As you approached, you noticed a firefighter washing a large, red truck — his sleeves rolled up, revealing muscular arms, and his focus never wavering from the task at hand. You hesitated for a moment before approaching.
"Excuse me," you called out, "I have a delivery from Lawrence General?"
He turned around, and you were met with striking green eyes and a smudge of soap on his cheek. He was ruggedly handsome, with a stubble that spoke of long hours and a jaw set with determination.
"Oh, hey," he replied, a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Thanks for the-"
Before he could finish, another firefighter called out to him, "Dean, we need you!"
"Sorry, duty calls," he said with a charming, apologetic grin. "Just leave the kits by the door, and thanks again."
"No problem," you replied, feeling a pang of disappointment as the moment ended too quickly. You placed the box down and watched as he jogged back to his colleagues, ready to respond to the next emergency.
The rest of your shift passed in a blur, and before you knew it, Mary was driving you back to the Winchester home. As the car hummed along the road, she glanced at you with a knowing smile.
"I hope your first day wasn't too overwhelming. You did great," she said encouragingly.
"It was definitely a day to remember," you admitted with a tired smile.
Mary's expression turned warm and excited as she announced, "Well, get ready for a family dinner tonight. John and I want you to meet our sons properly. They're excited to have you."
The thought of the evening ahead sparked a mix of nerves and curiosity within you.
"Oh, uh, okay." you replied slightly indifferent by the unexpected dinner, but the prospect of a meal with a family that wouldn’t make measure how many calories your plate has won’t be bad just because you had to meet your “landlord’s” sons. “Sounds nice.”

Ok and what if I said that I’m becoming genuinely invested in Evan Buckley despite never watching 911 because the gifs I see of him remind me so much of Dean Winchester?
A certain new show might end up on my TV very soon…

~~~~~
It was a beautiful spring day. Clear blue skies, birds chirping, and the smell of freshly-mowed grass lingering in the air. A perfect day, yet Dean couldn’t seem to shake this sense of dread.
He rinsed soap suds off the side of the truck. Before he could set the hose down, the bells sounded through the station. Hastily, he and the rest of the crew loaded into the trucks and pulled out of the station.
The lieutenant advised they were headed to a single-vehicle hit-and-run crash on the highway.
The silencing of the sirens and hiss of the air brakes announced their arrival on the scene. He was overcome with an intense sense of déjà vu as he climbed out of the truck to see the mangled blue Mustang.
Everyone moved towards the car to begin extricating the driver, but he couldn’t move. He felt like his feet were cemented to the ground.
Before he could figure out why, he was standing behind the ambulance with her on the stretcher. His hand was in hers as she cried out in agony. “I know it hurts. Just breathe and squeeze as hard as you need to, sweetheart.” She was then loaded into the ambo with him sitting beside her.
He held tightly onto her hand, worried that if he let go, she might just disappear. Suddenly, she squeezed his hand, panic filling her eyes as she struggled to breathe. In an attempt to soothe her however he could, he ran his thumb softly over her knuckles.
As Sam and Cas worked to treat her, he whispered soft reassurances. He was fairly certain she didn’t hear him over the commotion, but he continued anyway. Less than a minute passed, and she was able to breathe easier once more.
Dean watched as she slowly started to relax as the adrenaline in her system began to fade. She fought to keep her eyes open and her grip firm on his hand.
“Four minutes out!” Benny hollered from the driver's seat.
Moments later, her hand went lax in his just before she lost her fight for consciousness. “Stay awake, kiddo. Come on, open your eyes,” he pleaded.
Next, the heart monitor began to blare warning tones. “V-fib,” Cas announced.
“Damn it,” Sam muttered. Pressing his fingers against her neck, he added, “Lost her pulse. Dean, compressions.”
Once again, Dean was completely frozen in place. Why couldn’t he move? He had to save her.
He blinked and was then standing outside the trauma room at the hospital. He watched as the doctors worked to resuscitate her. “No,” he breathed out. “No, no, no. This isn’t what happened.”
“Hold compressions,” said the doctor. “Clear.”
Dean flinched as she was shocked once again. He shook his head. “We got her back in the ambulance. This is all wrong.”
The doctor looked at the monitor as the monotone droned on. He shook his head and sighed defeatedly.
“No. No, no, no, no, no.”
“Time of death…”
Dean gasped, jolting upright. Disoriented, it took a moment for him to realize where he was. He was at home, in his own bed.
As he tried to catch his breath, he glanced over his shoulder to see her sleeping soundly. She was safe and right beside him. He sighed in relief. It was only a nightmare.
Once he’d started to regain his bearings, he took a slow, deep breath. He scrubbed his hand down his face in an attempt to wipe the remaining images from his mind.
“Dean?” she asked, grogginess in her voice.
Not having noticed she’d woken, he nearly startled at the sound. Looking over his shoulder once more, he plastered on what he hoped was a convincing smile. “It’s early, sweetheart. Go back to sleep.”
She wasn’t convinced, though. Hearing the breathlessness in his voice, she pushed herself up to sit beside him. “Are you okay?”
He didn’t look at her as he nodded. “Yeah. Just a bad dream. I’m fine.”
“Wanna talk about it?” she asked as she rubbed between his shoulder blades.
He shrugged.
“Was it about that bad call this week? That fire…?”
He shuddered at the memory, but shook his head. “No, but maybe that was what triggered it.”
She didn’t push. Instead, she just wrapped her arms around him and squeezed gently. Keeping her arms snug around him, she rested her head on his shoulder and waited for him to speak again.
He lowered his head to kiss her arm and then turned his head awkwardly to press another to the top of her head. “It was about you.” She pulled back just enough to see his face. “Your accident. It was like I was back in that ambo with you when you almost—” He cleared his throat. “Except in the nightmare, you did.”
“Hey.” She shifted to kneel in front of him and took his face between her hands. “But I didn’t. I’m right here.”
“You did, though,” he whispered, closing his eyes tightly. “For a very long three and a half minutes… you were dead.”
She lifted his hand and placed his palm against her chest and held it there. “See, I’m just fine. I’m alive, and I’m not going anywhere.”
As his eyes locked with hers again, she watched some of the tension in his shoulders start to melt away.
She laid her hand over his heart, and he lifted his free hand to press hers tight to his chest. She could feel that it was still racing with the remnants of fear from his nightmare. She leaned forward and started to pepper kisses across his jawline and down the side of his neck.
He let his head fall forward to rest in the crook of her neck. She moved her hand to the back of his neck and started to play with the short hairs. They sat like that for several minutes in silence as he reassured himself that she really was there and she was okay.
“Besides…” she started, pulling away to look at him with a smirk. “You didn’t even know me back then. It would have just been another crappy day at the office.”
He scoffed and rolled his eyes. “That is not funny.”
She chuckled. “Just a little?”
He shook his head. “Not even a smidge.” Grabbing her arm, he quickly spun her around so her back was against his chest and then flopped back against the bed.
She squealed at the abrupt movement as he rolled both of them to their sides and made himself comfortable.
She smiled. “I love you, Dean.”
“I love you more.” He squeezed her hard before his hands found hers. With his left, he interlaced their fingers, and his right wrapped around her wrist, his fingertips settling against her pulse.
His fingers stayed firmly in place until his breathing evened out and he relaxed into sleep. It was a position he fell asleep in fairly regularly. She had never really understood why. Until now.
Once she was sure he was fully asleep, she gave into her own drowsiness. She took a deep breath, enveloped in the smell of his shampoo and aftershave. Pulling their intertwined hands closer, she pressed a kiss to his knuckles before drifting off.
When she woke again, sunlight streamed through the crack between the curtains. Dean’s arm was now loosely draped over her waist as he snored lightly.
She contemplated waking him, but decided against it. After the nightmare he’d had, she figured he could use the extra rest. She thought about just lying there or trying to go back to sleep until he woke up, but then her stomach growled loudly. Rolling just enough to look over her shoulder at Dean, she smiled. He looked so peaceful, a welcome contrast to a few hours earlier. She carefully lifted his arm so she could get up without waking him and went into the kitchen to make breakfast.
She was stirring scrambled eggs, flipping bacon, and toasting a bagel while the coffee brewed. Once everything was ready, she set all the bacon on one plate and poured two mugs of coffee. As she started to put the eggs on plates, Dean came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, hugging her tightly.
He huffed. “You know, of all the mornings I would have rather not woken up alone…”
Setting the pan and spatula back on the stove, she spun around in his arms and then stood up on her tip-toes to kiss him. “I’m sorry.” Reaching up to run her fingers through his hair, she continued, “I didn’t expect you to wake up. I was planning on coming back to wake you with breakfast.”
He stole a piece of bacon and ate it. “You’re forgiven.” After a quick kiss on her forehead, he took the plate of bacon and one mug and headed back towards the bedroom.
“Where are you going?”
“To wait for the rest of my breakfast in bed!” He disappeared from her sight as she laughed.
Quickly, she finished dishing up the eggs and placed them on a tray to bring into the bedroom.
“You know we could have just eaten at the table. You were already up.”
“And pass up the rare opportunity for breakfast in bed?” He scoffed. “No way.”
She set the tray down and situated herself beside him on the bed. He held up a piece of bacon for her, but before she could bite it, he pulled it away and ate it himself. They both fell into a fit of laughter as she pushed him back into the pillows. “So rude!”
“Sorry. Here, for you.” He lifted another piece towards her, but she didn’t move to take it from him.
Instead, she grabbed two pieces off the plate and shoved both in her mouth. While chewing she said, “You thought I was going to fall for that again?”
“Maybe.” He chuckled.
They ate in comfortable silence. When she was done eating, she slowly sipped her coffee. She swirled the dark liquid in the mug before she spoke. “You know, in all the times we have talked about that day, we have never talked about that part before last night.”
“I know.” He sighed. “You never brought it up, and I think I was trying to block it out.”
“Guess I’m lucky. I don’t remember it. There are all these stories about out-of-body experiences and your life flashing before your eyes. All I remember is you beside me in that ambulance and then waking up in the hospital. I feel like I should have realized how much it could have affected you, though.”
Dean shook his head. “No. There’s no reason you could have known that. That’s the first, and hopefully only, time I’ve had that nightmare.”
“There is one reason. It’s why you sometimes fall asleep with your fingers on my pulse like you do, right?”
He glanced down at his coffee mug and shrugged. “I can stop. If it bothers you.”
“It doesn’t.” She reached over to place her hand against his cheek, urging him to look at her. “It brings you some comfort. That could never bother me.”
He kissed her palm softly. “Remember that joke you made last night about ‘just another crappy day at the office’?”
“Yeah.” She dropped her hand back to her lap.
“You’re right. We have lost patients before. It wasn’t like it was the first time I’d experienced it. But it has never felt like it did that day.”
She furrowed her brows in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“It's hard to explain, but it didn’t feel like just another patient we might lose. You didn’t feel like a stranger.” Dean looked at her for a moment before dropping his gaze to the bed. “‘Drop the patient at the hospital and never look back.’ It’s not really a rule, but it kind of is.”
She hummed. “Don’t get attached.”
He nodded. “I’ve never broken that rule. Except with you. I went to the hospital that night. I had to know, but you were in the ICU, and I wasn’t family so they wouldn’t tell me much.”
“Wow.” She smiled as she took his hand. “Why haven’t you ever told me that?”
He squeezed her hand. “Felt weird to mention at first. Then, eventually, I just didn’t know how to bring it up. There wasn’t really a time or even a reason to mention it.”
“Well, it’s sweet.” She chuckled. “And it’s nice to know it wasn’t just me.”
A mix of surprise and confusion flashed across his face.
“I didn’t remember much about the accident at first. But I vividly remembered you. You were the first person I thought of when I woke up, and I thought about you so much those two weeks in the hospital. I had actually considered taking a cab to the station before I was given the all-clear to drive.” She chuckled as she remembered walking into the fire station that first time. “I really did want to thank everyone that day at the station, but mostly, I wanted to see you again.”
“And now you’re stuck with me.” He pulled her towards him and smushed her in an awkward hug.
She laughed and pushed herself back just enough to be more comfortable. “Yeah. Who would have thought a near-fatal car crash could actually be one of the best things to ever happen to me?”
He shifted her so she was straddling his legs and hugged her tightly once again. “Can you just do me a favor and stay away from hospital beds for the rest of forever?”
She smirked mischievously. “Oh, I don’t know. I kind of figured I’d visit one a few more times in the semi-near future.”
He pulled away to scowl at her.
“Are you saying you don’t want kids? I was thinking two or maybe three. But I plan to do that in a hospital.” He rolled his eyes as she continued. “Because if you're saying you don’t want kids, then I really might have to rethink this whole relationship.”
“You are a smart-ass.” He pulled her closer and pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead. “I would love to have kids with you someday. But that is the only reason you’re allowed near a hospital bed, deal?”
She made a show of thinking it over. “Fine, I will do my best. But with my luck, I’m not making you any promises.”
He grumbled. “You could just promise anyway.”
“Fine, if you want me to lie to you. I promise I will.” She rolled her eyes dramatically before climbing off him and off the bed.
“Thank you. Where are you going?”
“Put this in the kitchen,” she explained, grabbing the tray off the bed. She left the room, and he could hear her loading the dishes into the dishwasher before she reappeared in the doorway. “Do you wanna go for a drive today? We can take your Baby. Maybe have a picnic by the lake.”
Images of his nightmare flashed through his memory, and he shuddered. Beckoning her closer, he grabbed her arm to pull her down beside him. “Or we could just watch movies in bed all day.”
Epilogue: “Easy as Pie”
The week after the incident at Stull Storage, John, Sam, Dean, and Eileen sat down to a family dinner that you cooked in the brothers’ apartment. Aside from Eileen, all of you had injuries in one form or another (but even Sam’s shiner was healing up nicely).
For dessert, you were a bit nervous as you brought out a freshly baked apple pie. Dean caught you mentally bracing yourself before you set it down on the table. He shot you a reassuring smile.
“Looks great,” he said.
Your returning smile was tentative as you divvied out the first piece. Dean was just a bit disappointed when you handed it to John. His eyes followed the plate.
You smiled more genuinely, and made sure the next generous piece you cut was for your boyfriend.
After everyone was served, you sat down with your own plate and encouraged them all to dig in. Forks hit the crumbly top and cinnamon apple filling, and there were collective hums of pleasure throughout the room.
You brightened and glanced over at the rest of the table. John looked contemplative. His fork rested on the plate for a moment.
He gave a rare smile. “That’s some damn good pie.”
Sam nodded. “For sure.”
Dean looked over at you after he’d already demolished half of his serving. A smile spread across his face.
“Best slice of pie since I can remember,” he said, giving you a wink.
Both of you knew the weight of that review. It humbled you, making you blush.
You smiled and leaned over to press a kiss to his cheek, rough with stubble.
“I guess this recipe’s a keeper then,” you said.
He hummed in agreement. When he went in for a real kiss, it was sweet indeed.
From then on, you all spent the evening talking, eating, laughing, with you and Sam drinking wine and everyone else their beer. You updated them on Andréa and Benny, who were planning their trip to Greece in a few months.
"We should take a vacation," Dean pointed out, gesturing around the table. "All of us."
Sam raised his brows at his brother. "Oh yeah? Where would you wanna go?"
Dean thought about it for a moment. He glanced at you, and found you smiling.
"The beach," he said. "Somewhere warm and chill, with those fancy little umbrellas in your drink."
"Hmm...I like that," you said, as your smile grew. Tropical, relaxing, a warm sun on your face, and your boyfriend in some board shorts. You could definitely go for some of that.
"Sounds nice," Eileen agreed.
"I'll look into some destinations," Sam nodded. Dean nudged his brother's shoulder.
"One word, dude. Maui."
Sam snorted. "We can't afford Maui."
"Hey, you never know, man! Time to check out some Groupons."
"You can't get a Groupon to go to Hawaii," Sam said. His face was scrunched in what Dean liked to call, his "Know It All" face.
"Are you kidding me?" Dean shot back. "There's a friggin' Groupon for everything nowadays!"
Of course, that devolved into a familiar sibling argument that was only disrupted when John broke into the conversation. He admitted something shocking—that he was taking some time off work, for the first time since he took his sons camping when they were kids. Sam and Dean teased the workaholic for finally "slowing down" in his old age, but it was all in good fun.
You and Eileen shared a knowing look. It all felt as close to family as you’d had in a long time.
And for Dean, it felt like he could breathe again. He’d gotten a text shortly after dessert—from Cas.
Jo made it into the Police Academy. She starts training in a few weeks.
Dean’s lips quirked with a smile.
How do you know?
I’ll be instructing a couple of her classes. Firearm Safety and Weapons Training.
Dean nearly laughed.
Good luck, buddy. Try not to get your ass shot.
To which Cas replied:
My ass will be nowhere within range, I assure you.
Dean did chuckle at that. When you turned to him and asked what was so funny, he just shook his head and grabbed onto your hand on the table.
“Nothin’. I’m good,” he said. He pressed your knuckles to his lips. “I’m real good.”
You smiled at that.
Tumblr media
Later that night, Dean walked his father to the door while you and Sam were locked in a trivia game, and Eileen tried to play mediator between two very competitive nerds.
“Dad,” Dean said.
John stopped with a hand on the door, turning back to his eldest.
Dean paused to gather his thoughts, but he eventually grasped his father’s arm and met his gaze.
“Just wanted to say thank you, for what you did for her,” he said, discreetly nodding at you. He kept his voice quiet. “You protected her when I couldn’t.”
John paused, seeming surprised. His brows furrowed as he shook his head.
“You don’t need to thank me for that, son,” he said.
“Yeah, I do,” Dean insisted. He’d heard every bit of that conversation between John and Daniel in that warehouse. His father had been willing to lay down and die for you, not a moment’s hesitation.
Cas was right, Dean had realized. His father did have a line.
John let out a breath. “What matters is we made it here.”
Dean nodded, though he dimmed.
“Yeah, came with one hell of a price tag.”
It still weighed heavily on him, what he’d had to do to end Daniel Savage. In the end, John had lied on his statement of the events. He’d taken responsibility for grabbing Daniel’s gun and shooting him between the eyes.
“It’s the only thing I can do to keep you out of this,” John had told his son. “Should’ve been my hand anyway.”
Dean appreciated what his dad had done to protect him from the law, and his career, but it still made him feel dirty. A strike to his integrity as a first responder, and as a man. That was something he’d just have to deal with, along with everything else.
John distracted him, however, by gripping his shoulder this time.
“You saved my life, Dean,” he said. And with a hint of a smile, “It’s what you’re good at.”
Dean met his dad’s gaze. He wasn’t quite able to smile back, but there was new warmth in his chest.
“Oh,” said John, raising a finger. “Before I forget…”
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a silver engagement ring with a small stone. To Dean, it looked familiar…
When it finally struck him what this was, he looked up at John in surprise. Dean glanced back to make sure you weren’t looking before he tentatively took the ring.
“Is this…Mom’s?” he asked.
John nodded. “The stone’s nothing special. You might wanna get it reset. Sam already figured out his uh…situation on his own. Maybe you want to find your own too.”
Dean knew what he meant. Sam had bought a ring last year, but he'd proposed to Eileen just a few days ago. They were already planning to get married a year from now, along with buying their first house together.
Dean examined the ring he held with a softer smile.
“Nah, it’s perfect,” he said.
He didn’t know yet if you two were ready for that step. A lot had happened in such a short amount of time…but he knew he wasn’t going anywhere.
He had time to do things right with you.
Tumblr media
A few months later, Dean’s medical leave ended. He was physician-approved for duty, psych evaluation and all. He showed up for his shift bright and early.
He entered the doors of Firehouse 25 to a host of his friends and makeshift family cheering, complete with cheesy streamers and an even cheesier cake that Meg held. On the top was scrawled: Good Job Cracking Your Head.
“A smoke eater returns to the house!” Benny remarked with a grin. “Good to see ya, brother.”
He clapped Dean heavily enough on the back that it earned a grunt and a laugh out of him.
“You too, man,” Dean replied.
Meg set down the cake on the table and was the next one to playfully punch him in the shoulder.
“You have a nice little vacation?” she teased.
Dean rolled his eyes. “Yeah, complete with bottomless margaritas and little umbrellas.”
She smirked, but she was still earnest when she touched his arm.
“Welcome back.”
Dean chuckled. “Ooh, now I know you missed me.”
It was her turn to roll her eyes as she waved a dismissive hand at him. Chuck and Jack gave more sincere well wishes, with the latter actually hugging Dean. He’d tolerated it with a smile.
Gordon clapped him on the shoulder once Jack was finally done, and Dean sent the Candidate off with a bright smile on his face.
Gordon smiled. “Welcome back, Lieutenant.”
Dean nodded and shook the other man’s hand. “Thanks for holdin’ down the fort, man.”
“No problem,” Gordon said. “Any time you wanna go on sabbatical, you just let me know. Acting Lieutenant’s almost better than the real deal. It’s not as much paperwork.”
Dean chuckled, but before he could sling back a retort, the alarm went off. There was a working house fire downtown, according to the dispatcher in the overhead speaker.
Bobby appeared in the hall and clapped his hands once.
“All right, gear up. We’re startin’ off the day right,” he said. He gave Dean a look that was somehow both pleased to see him and stern at the same time. Bobby addressed him with a point of his finger.
“See me in my office before the end of shift,” he said. “We’ve got somethin’ to talk about.”
Tumblr media
A few days later, Dean had the rare pleasure of welcoming you home from work on his day off. You trudged into the apartment with several bags and rolling a cooler behind you. He got up from the couch and grabbed some of the bags for you on your way to the kitchen.
“How did it go?” he asked, reaching out a hand to rub some flour off your cheek. You smiled brightly.
“Well, there was a little snafu with the mini quiche, but they loved the menu I proposed. They want me to cater the whole wedding!” you said.
“Whoa, that’s a lotta food,” Dean remarked. Once you’d dumped the rest of your stuff on the kitchen table, he slid an arm around your waist and brought you flush against him, earning a squeal from you.
You clung to his shoulders. “You still on for being my official taste tester?”
He stared at you with mock offense.
“Uh, obviously. Mini quiche are my weakness,” he teased. “Just another form of pie, far as I’m concerned.”
You giggled into his lips as he claimed you for a kiss. It was both sweet, and a bit naughty as his hands moved to squeeze your ass. His words were no less heartfelt.
“I’m proud of you, sweetheart,” Dean said. “I really am.”
 You smiled and stroked his cheek in answer.
The Monday morning after that family dinner a few months ago, you’d quit your job at Savage & Co. After a month of wracking your brain and your savings, you decided to start your own catering business.
It was your way of starting small, to try and get people in this town to know you for your food and baked goods. And maybe, if you were successful enough, you’d be able to open up your own bakery in a couple of years.
For once, you were going after what you truly wanted…but now, your career was only part of it.
You hadn’t forgotten your conversation with Dean about what he wanted for his future: of getting married someday, and having a family. Something he could build for himself.
Not only did you want that for him, but you’d begun to crave that for yourself as well: a family of your own.
Realistically, you knew that part was years away for you and Dean. However, you had that in the back of your mind. Having your own business had always been your dream, but sometimes your dream could adjust.
Or, it could become something new.
You’d also sold your grandparents’ house. You had contemplated going back, but you didn’t want to be reminded of how the police and the Arson Department had torn it apart after Daniel Savage threatened your life. You didn’t want to be reminded of where both of your grandparents died.
You loved that house, but you also knew it was time to let it go…
Because you finally understood what your grandfather had tried to tell you months ago.
A house did not make a home. And now, you’d managed to make a new one.
For his part, Dean had been happy to have you stay in his apartment. Sam was getting ready to move out in a few months anyway, as he and Eileen were deep into house hunting and planning their wedding.
“So…I’ve gotta tell you something,” said Dean, after he parted from your lips for a moment, and allowed you to breathe. His tone made you tilt your head in suspicion.
“It’s nothing bad,” he said, though he looked a bit nervous.
Your brows furrowed. You led him to the couch, where he held your hands in his. It took him a moment to get started. He seemed stuck on what he wanted to say, or maybe just how he wanted to say it.
“Whatever it is, I’m sure I can handle it,” you teased.
Dean gave you a smile. His shoulders relaxed a little.
“They want to promote me to Captain,” he said.
Your mouth fell open and your eyes went wide.
“They? Who’s they?” you asked.
Dean blew out a breath and scratched at the small scar on the side of his head.
“Apparently it came from the Battalion Chief.”
He explained that the Fire Department had gotten the full debrief from both Sam and John about Dean’s involvement in ending the serial arsons and murders committed by Nick and Daniel Savage. Without you and Dean, they wouldn’t have figured out Azazel’s identity, let alone stopped his criminal enterprise.
You smiled wide with excitement as you held Dean’s face in your hands.
“That’s amazing!” you said. You pulled him in for a hug. Though he held you back, you soon realized that you were happier than he seemed to be. You pulled back and carded your fingers through his hair, earning his gaze.
“What’s wrong, baby? This is great news!”
Dean’s lips pursed. “I don’t know. I broke ranks and defied a direct order at the Savage & Co. fire. And at the warehouse, I was even more reckless. I don’t want to be promoted for disobeying orders.”
You frowned at that, even as you continued to stroke through his hair.
“What did Bobby tell you?” you asked.
Once again, Dean sighed. He’d been called into Bobby’s office a few days ago, after his first shift back at 25.
He’d surprised the hell out of Dean.
Tumblr media
“Did you break ranks that day, and put not just yourself, but Benny and the rest of your men in danger?” Bobby said. “You bet your ass.”
Dean averted his gaze. He stood with his hands drawn behind his back, willing to take whatever punishment the Chief saw fit.
“But,” Bobby continued. His fingers tapped on his desk, where he sat on the edge across from Dean. “It wasn’t fair of me to stop you from lookin’ for your girlfriend.”
Dean’s attention sharpened at that, and he frowned in confusion. Bobby didn’t apologize. Ever.
“Sir?” Dean asked uncertainly.
Bobby softened the slightest bit. He heaved a sigh.
The man was a widower, but he still wore his wedding ring. He toyed with it now on his finger.
“We could’ve radioed in with the other teams already at work. I could’ve paired half of your team with the top floor units. But in the heat of the moment, I made a judgment call,” Bobby said, leveling Dean with a look. “As a leader, you’ll continue makin’ mistakes. You’ll make the wrong call. It’s how you learn to keep leading that matters. And there ain’t a person in this house that wouldn’t have gone up to pull your fool head outta that fire.”
Dean stayed quiet in his discomfort. He still wasn’t entirely sure why Bobby was telling him all of this.
“That being said, this is coming from the top,” Bobby said. His gruffness was back. He took a folder off his desk and handed it to Dean. “Here’s the next step, if you choose to accept it.”
Tumblr media
You were crying by the end of his story. Dean cupped your cheek and caught your tears with his thumb. You grabbed that hand and gently squeezed.
“He believes in you, Dean,” you said. “So do I. And it’s my turn to be so damn proud of you.”
Dean graced you with a smile for that one. Yours brightened. You moved off the couch and slid into his lap, twining your arms around his neck. Dean welcomed you with an arm around your waist and a hand sliding up your jean-clad thigh.
“Guess I’m gonna have to get used to calling you Captain,” you said with a smirk.
Captain Winchester, Dean considered, rolling the weight of it around in his mind.
He chuckled. “Okay, maybe I'm liking the sound of that.”
“Mhmm, that’s what I thought,” you said, shortly before you pressed your lips to his. He squeezed your hip while your deft fingers once again slipped into his hair. With each new kiss, Dean felt more of his uncertainty melt away.
A new thought occurred to him then. It made him start to grin against your lips, and you parted from him.
“What?” you asked in amusement.
Dean slipped a hand into his pocket, where he felt the outline of his mother’s newly resized ring.
“Hey,” he said. Your brows drew together in suspicion at the gleam in his eye.
“Hey, yourself,” you quipped.
Dean breathed in deep, steeling himself. He looked into your eyes, and he smiled.
“I’ve got a question for you.”
Pulling up and parking outside Dean’s house, Y/N got out of the vehicle, filled with intent, as she walked confidently to his door and knocked. She made a deal with herself as she dressed to come here: she wouldn’t overthink it. In fact, she wouldn’t think about it at all because if she did, she’d probably realise just how crazy and desperate this was.
Dean answered the door and smiled as he took her in, but when his lips turned upside down, and a look of confusion furrowed his brow, she lost all of the earlier confidence she had and realised that might have been a bad idea.
“Y/N, sweetheart? Is everything alright?” Dean asked, and she mumbled a quiet curse that she’d come over out of the blue and was worrying him.
“I’m sorry for showing up unannounced. I checked with Uncle Bobby to make sure you weren’t working, and I just needed to come. I know we haven’t arranged another day to meet, but I can’t… this… this isn’t working,” she rambles out, and her eyes widen when Dean’s flash with hurt.
“Every time we’ve planned to meet for the past three weeks, something happens that means we need to reschedule, and I can’t do it anymore. So I thought maybe if I came here unplanned, then maybe we could have a fighting chance at this.”
“It’s four,” Dean responded with a smirk.
“What?” she replied, confused.
“We’ve been rescheduling for four weeks.”
“All the more reason to say ‘screw it,’” Y/N stepped towards him and kissed him.
She felt Dean freeze for a second, and she smiled into his lips when he sighed softly and placed his hands gently on her hips. Her hands slowly slid into his short hair, and he licked at her lips, desperate to deepen the kiss, and she gladly let him.
Y/N’s nerves hummed with anticipation and from her awakening arousal. Dean had always been a good kisser. Her experience in kissing boys had been lacking when they started dating, so she didn’t have much to compare it to until she moved away. It was then she appreciated just how good of a kisser he was. And he did not disappoint now, either.
Things became heated between them quickly, hands roaming, and neither could get enough of the other. While she didn’t come here with the intention of sleeping with him tonight, she remembered enough about her first love to know that this was probably leading to his bedroom.
“Ahem.”
A throat clearing behind Dean made her freeze, and when he pulled away from her lips, sighed, and put his head on her shoulder, she saw John leaning against the kitchen doorframe, smirking at them, and Mary grinning.
“Don’t stop on our account,” Mary said with a laugh, and Dean groaned in annoyance.
“I’m sorry, I should’ve called first. I shouldn’t have assumed you’d be–” Y/N started but was cut off by Dean’s lips on hers.
“Stay,” he whispered as he pulled away from her and rested his forehead on hers. “Mom brought over a lasagne. Trust me, they’re just leaving.”
“You’re not just saying that are you?” Y/N grinned.
“No, I swear!” Dean chuckled and held his hands up.
“He’s right, sweetie,” Mary said. “When I heard he’d been called into work to help with the accident yesterday, I knew he wouldn’t have eaten much, and I brought over some food. We are just leaving. We’re just heading over to see Sam and Jess and help with the last few things before the baby comes.”
“See? Stay.” The puppy eyes Dean threw her way were unfair, and Y/N hated that she still couldn’t say no to them.
“Okay,” she agreed.
“Thank you,” Dean sighed, feeling his insecurities leave him and finally believing Y/N wants this as much as he does. Cupping her cheeks, he placed a soft peck on her lips and took her hand to pull her further into the house.
Tumblr media
The door had barely closed behind John and Mary when Dean’s lips were on hers again. She thought she’d feel nervous, but as they kissed and their hands started roaming under clothing, it felt like they’d spent no time apart. It felt right. It felt like home.
Dean’s arms circled her waist, and he gently tapped, encouraging her to jump up and hook her legs around his waist. The second he had a secure grip on her, he carried her upstairs and into his bedroom.
Laying her on the bed, Dean stepped back and removed his denim shirt before pulling off his shoes and her boots. He crawled up the bed, covered her body with his, and their lips met again.
Y/N’s hands trailed under his black T-shirt, and she shivered, feeling his muscles quiver under her touch. Pulling the material up, she broke away from him just long enough to remove his shirt and throw it on the floor.
Dean quickly followed her lead and slid his hands up her waist, dragging the material of her soft cotton shirt with them and removing it. Sitting back on his heels, he unbuttoned her jeans and pulled them off her legs, leaving her only in her underwear.
Standing from the bed, his jeans joined the pile of discarded clothing on his floor. He groaned loudly as Y/N’s small hand rubbed his semi-erect length through the thin material of his underwear.
Once he was at full hardness, she removed his underwear, moaning at the reveal of his thick, hard, leaking cock. Leaning forward, Y/N gently licked at his glans, circling her tongue around it, collecting his precome, and slipping him into her mouth.
With a gasp, Dean’s hands gripped her hair softly. Peaking up at him through hooded eyes, she pushed her head further down his length than he was expecting and moaned, the vibrations from her throat making him growl and his head fall back.
“Y/N, I’m gonna need you to stop, or this will be over embarrassingly quickly,” Dean whimpered.
She pulled off him with an obscene slurping sound, making him growl again. He kneeled on the floor before her, placing a hand on each leg and sliding them up to meet her underwear.
“Lie back, Princess,” Dean murmured, and she was quick to do as he said, lying back on her elbows. He slowly pulled the lace garment off her legs, his fingers trailing over her skin, causing her to shiver and prickle with goosebumps.
“Spread those legs for me,” Dean said, his voice deep with arousal, as he discarded her underwear on the floor. Y/N whimpered as she let her legs fall to either side and watched Dean’s eyes change to a deep forest green as lust clouded over him.
Grabbing her ankles, Dean pulled her down the bed and wrapped his arms around her legs, pinning her thighs to the bed. Dipping his head down, he groaned at the shiny tell-tale signs of her arousal.
“Hmm,” he hummed and licked his lips. “So wet already, Princess. Can I taste you?”
“Please, Dean,” Y/N begged, grateful he didn’t tease her too long before she felt that first long swipe of his tongue make its way from the bottom of her soaking, aching slit to the top.
Pushing his tongue between her folds, Dean expertly found her tiny bundle of nerves and repeatedly flicked the tip of his wet muscle over it. Y/N could feel him grin as her natural reflexes of trying to close her legs made him hold her tighter and push her further into the bed, forcing her to stay open to him.
As his mouth brought her higher and higher, she tried to ground herself by running her hands through his hair and gently tugging on the short strands. Dean moaned, and she smirked, remembering how much his hair being played with drove him wild.
The gentle scrape of her fingers over his head spurred him on in his efforts, and his mouth and tongue licked and sucked like a man hellbent on giving her the most powerful orgasm possible.
Y/N was already close to unravelling under the attention of his mouth, so when his finger pushed inside her, her back arched, and her head fell to the mattress. She moaned loudly and tightened her grip on his hair.
When one finger became two, and those fingers curled upwards, she fell apart completely. Her hips bucked to get his fingers to fuck her deeper; a long, rumbling groan escaped through the waves of pure pleasure, her fingers tugging mercilessly on his hair. She couldn’t remember a time when she’d felt this good. She felt like she was flying and never wanted to be on solid ground again.
Dean placed a final kiss on her sex before kissing his way up her body. He paused at her breasts, sliding his hands behind her back, unhooked her bra, pulled the straps down, and removed the last barrier between them.
Continuing his path of kisses up her body, he finally came to rest on her lips. He circled his hips, grinding himself into her wet heat. The sensation made her gasp, and Dean took it as an opportunity to slip his tongue into her mouth. Y/N quickly captured it with hers, and when Dean pulled away too soon, she chased his lips, only opening her eyes when she heard his soft chuckle.
When her gaze met his, he pushed his hips forward and filled her completely. Feeling her stretch perfectly to accommodate his girth, Dean watched as her mouth opened and her eyes rolled. Once fully within her, he held still, wanting to savour the connection and feeling that was Y/N for as long as possible.
He knew this wouldn’t be his best performance. Not even one of his top ten. Because this has been all he has wanted for the past twelve years. Because every time he’d had a girl beneath him, he’d wished and fantasised that it was the girl under him right now.
Pulling his hips back slowly, Dean thrust back in with a groan. Y/N’s warm, wet core was even better than he remembered, and as he pulled back again, he moved his hand between their bodies and thumbed at her clit.
Y/N whimpered at the extra pleasure Dean was giving her, but from the fire burning in her core, she guessed it probably wasn’t necessary because the feeling of him, the love he was radiating, and the overwhelming peace that blanketed her already had her close to climaxing.
She screamed as Dean’s thumb caught a particularly sensitive part of her clit. Knowing he’d found his girl’s sweet spot, he repeated the motion until she came undone again, gasping his name like a prayer and her walls clenching him beautifully.
He couldn’t hold back any longer. He pushed in until his whole length was inside her, and they were skin to skin, completely as one. He stilled, and with a roar of her name, he emptied everything he had inside her.
Dean rolled off her, pulled her to his chest and wrapped his arms around her, and as she drifted off to sleep, Y/N felt safe and loved, and that was all she’d ever dreamed of.
Heart
Heart by Speary (@spearywritesstuff) Rating: Mature Word count: 90k
The heart is a funny thing. Some say it loves, and others say that it is just a muscle, keeping you alive for some minuscule amount of time. For Cas Shurley, the heart was a defective reminder that each day was maybe going to be his last. For years he had been in and out of hospitals. For years he had viewed time as something trickling down the drain. Then Sam Winchester died. He died, and Cas got to live. And in what universe was that fair? But he accepted the gift, and told himself that he would live. Each beat of Sam’s heart in his chest was an anthem, a siren song beckoning him back to life. This new heart though, wanted him to do more than just live. This heart had a story to tell. It would wake him up in the night, and visit him with cold drafts and a sense of purpose that would propel him out of bed. But before he could truly live and act on the demands of his new heart, he would have to get out of the hospital, and he would have to meet the Winchester family. And though he didn’t know it, he would especially have to meet Dean, Sam’s brother. And meeting him would remind him of just how much more there was to life than just the living.
That heart belonged to Sam Winchester.
And suddenly Castiel is thrust into the chaotic life of Dean Winchester, grieving brother and son who looks at him in a way no one else ever has.  Castiel is drawn in.  Their lives intertwine as their parents become friends, their friends become friends, and they even end up living in the same building.  Cas’ life becomes unintentionally enmeshed in Dean’s, his world completely infiltrated by everything Dean.
But the one thing he doesn’t tell Dean, is the one thing that connects them the most profoundly.  The cold spots that slip into Castiel’s bones, the automatic writing sessions that feel like something – someone – is taking over his body, the things he knows that he shouldn’t.
Castiel and Dean’s relationship comes to a climax at the same time the revelations Castiel has been seeing in his dreams start to come together with some terrifying consequences.
24 hours later, Military Base 606…
Dean feels a light caress on top of his head, causing him to groan and drool a little. It feels so incredibly nice he wants to bury his head deeper into his pillow, the tiredness too comforting to escape before he notices the strange coldness and hardness that meet his left cheek. That’s not a fucking pillow…
“De, wake up.”
He hears her sweet voice calling out for him. It’s a whisper, not much louder than the sound of dripping water in the distance, but it feels close enough that he dares to pry his eyes open. He then realizes Y/N’s right next to him, and the hand gently brushing through his locks belongs to none other than his best friend.
“Careful, careful,” she warns him softly as he startles up, his memories beginning to come back to him.
He rubs his eyes then, propped up on one arm, and glances around his prison cell, his brow furrowing a crease more with each new sight. Where the fuck is he?
And then it hits him, his pine green eyes landing on her and the warm smile on her lips.
“Y/N! You, uh, you’re here,” he splutters and his pupils widen with her grin.
“Hey, Winchester. Missed my stupid, reckless ass?”
“Yeah,” he chuckles in relief and sniffles a little when tears start brimming in his eyes as the brightness of her smile fills his heart. It grows so much it’s close to bursting through his ribcage. “Hell yeah, I did.”
She laughs and traps her lower lip behind her teeth, her cheeks lightly blushing, and even though it’s dark, dingy, and dirty all around them, he still thinks she’s the most beautiful creature he’s ever seen.
“I’ve been looking for you,” he smiles, and although they’re currently trapped in some off-site military prison, he can’t help the happiness flooding through his veins. Of course, her smile wouldn’t fail him, even in a place like this.
“Well, you’ve found me,” she quips with a giggle, and it sounds so fantastic all he wants to do is pull her flush against him and feel her warm, soft lips on his.
“God, can we not do this again?” another voice suddenly groans loudly.
Dean’s eyebrows quirk together in confusion as he glances past his best friend and sees a blonde girl rolling her eyes in annoyance two cells over.
“Wait, we’re not alone here?” His eyes meet Y/N’s again, and she giggles slightly, shaking her head.
“No, uhm, that’s Claire.”
“The girl with electric powers you’ve been searching for?” he arches an eyebrow. What, are they human collectibles now for some psycho military guy?
“Yup, that’s me,” the blonde smirks. “And I’m a minor, so you better keep it in your pants, pal.”
“Wha-, I wasn’t…” He closes his mouth when he hears Y/N’s snort next to him.
“She’s just messing with you. She’s nineteen. Ignore her,” she laughs and it’s so intoxicating he joins her a little, leaning his back against the concrete wall as he settles into his confinement. “She makes for a very entertaining cellmate, though.”
“How long was I out?” His mind feels drowsy from whatever they’ve shot into his neck, a swollen bump still perceptible on his throat from the needle prick.
“About eight hours,” Y/N replies and mirrors his position, resting her back against the wall as they share glances through bars. “Claire thinks she’s been here for about a week. And I’ve been here for like two days… maybe? Two guards came by yesterday and threw you in there.”
“Yeah, uh, I went to Nick’s office to look for you and got ambushed by some military dudes,” Dean explains, trying to recall as much from his foggy memories as possible.
“I figured they were military by their uniforms,” Y/N nods and he can see by the wrinkles forming on her brow that she’s contemplating something. “But they can’t just do that, right? They can’t kidnap us and lock us up here. We’re citizens. We have rights.”
“I’m pretty sure we’ve crossed the line of what’s possible in this world a long time ago, sweetheart,” Dean sighs and tilts his head back in frustration, slamming it softly against the concrete a few times. How the fuck did he get here?
“How do you know Nick?”
Her question brings him back and he gazes at her, scratching at his throat. “I met him at the hospital when I was visiting you, and uhm, long story short, he found out about my, uh, thing and offered me a deal.”
“What kinda deal?” She raises an eyebrow at him and shifts a little closer to the bars.
“He gives me pills that suppress my powers, and in exchange, he can run tests on me,” he admits and feels ashamed when he says it out loud. He knows he should’ve been smarter than that. “It’s just once a month. It’s not a big deal,” he clears his throat to brush off the severity but notices her bewildered stares from his peripheral.
“Is that why you were meeting with a dealer at Devil’s Bridge?”
“You saw me, huh?” He licks his lips and averts his gaze altogether, not wanting to see the disappointment in her eyes. It would effectively destroy him, and the shame he’s feeling all on his own right now is already enough for him.
“Yeah,” Dean swallows the hard lump that’s stuck in his throat. In retrospect, every mistake, every wrong path, looks a lot clearer now, but he supposes it always does – or people wouldn’t fuck up at all.
“Dean… I-, I know I wasn’t around before, but… why wouldn’t you have told me when I woke up?”
“I wanted to, but uh… honestly, I was scared. I didn’t tell anyone except Nick. I mean, technically, I did tell you when you were unconscious. It’s just after you woke up and what happened to Helena… I didn’t want people to think I’m a monster… I didn’t want you to think I’m one,” Dean shares quietly, fumbling with his fingers in his lap, and shrugs. “So, I figured keeping a low profile and a healthy distance was the way to go.”
“Well, admittedly, that’s a very you plan,” she teases, and it makes him laugh a bit before the prison falls back into silence.
“Hey, uhm, about what I said the other night…” His tongue darts out to wet his lips before his teeth harshly bite down on it, searching for a better word than a simple ‘sorry.’
“It’s okay,” Y/N cuts off his train of thought with a sweet smile and twitches her shoulders when he stares at her, perplexed.
“How?”
She shrugs again and laughs softly at his puzzlement, “I don’t know. I mean, for a second there, I considered giving you a rabies shot, Bambi. But, uhm… I guess I can’t really live without you either, so what other choice do I have?”
“I’m still sorry, though,” he says because he thinks she deserves to hear it at least once. He’s still too ashamed to look at her fully.
She nods and reaches for his hand through the poles, giving it a small squeeze. It forces him to look at her, and when he does, there’s nothing but an understanding smile on her lips and forgiveness in her eyes. “I know.”
“I’m an asshole,” he huffs and notices how the corners of her mouth draw into a sly smirk in acknowledgment. He lets out a deep sigh and purses his lips. “I don’t know how I turned my life into such a mess. God, I fucked things up so much, Y/N. I’m so, so sorry.”
“Hey, it’s okay,” she smiles softly and bumps his shoulder through their confines. “I think we can agree that we both fucked up. People make mistakes. To err is human; to forgive, divine. Alexander Pope said that. He was a poet during the Enlightenment era.”
“Yeah, but you don’t even know half the things I’ve done yet,” he breathes and catches her glance. “Although I could use a little enlightenment, I guess.”
“Did you knock someone up?”
“What, no!” His brow furrows, taken aback by her sudden question. It’s probably the first time he can answer that honestly, though. He hasn’t had sex in over a year. Is this because she thinks he’s a cheap slut?
“Killed a guy?”
“No?”
“Robbed an old lady?”
“Y/N…” He’s finally caught on to what she’s doing and gives her a raised look. She laughs, and it’s angelic in essence.
“De, I told you – you’re always gonna be my best friend, alright? You might fuck up, and I might get mad at you and yell at you or even wanna kill you, but I promise I’ll regret it immediately after… like a second later,” she tells him with a small chuckle and the corners of his mouth shape into a grin.
“A second, huh?”
“Maybe five, depending on how mad you made me beforehand,” she jokes, and it swells his heart when he sees her rosy cheeks and adorable dimples make an appearance.
“Gotcha,” he laughs lightly. And while they’re imprisoned in possibly the worst place ever, it weirdly feels normal between them again. He’s missed that.
“But I mean it. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you, okay? I’d jump in front of bullets… I’d definitely help you bury a body.”
“Good to know,” he nods with a straight face, even though the laughter wants to gush out of him. “Except for the bullets part. Don’t do that.”
She playfully rolls her eyes in response. Shit, she’s so fucking cute.
“We’ll fix it, okay?” she assures him with gentle enthusiasm and holds his hand a little tighter. His heart pounds faster when she does. She better not drop it, or he’s getting the glue again.
“Yeah, if we ever get outta here,” he breathes, his green eyes scanning for a possible exit. “Can you use your powers to get us out?”
“Oh, genius! Like we haven’t tried that before,” he hears Claire scoffing and he’s sure she’s rolled her eyes again without even peeking at her.
“I’ll take that as a no,” he replies defeatedly.
“See that control panel by the door over there?” Y/N points to a big metal door close to his cell and a silver box by the wall next to it. “That blue switch dampens our powers or something. Good news is I can’t hear your thoughts for once, though.”
Dean chuckles self-consciously, the tips of his ears reddening, “Yeah, uhm, ‘m sorry about that too, by the way.” He’s too scared to ask what exactly she’s heard so far because he can only imagine it in his worst fucking nightmares.
“No worries,” she smirks. A mischievous twinkle then appears in her eyes, and she tugs her lower lip between her teeth, lifting her eyebrow curiously. “You really wanna do all those things to my ass?”
Shit, shit, shit…
His pupils widen comically, the heat rising to his freckled cheeks, “Oh God, I-, uh… fuck.”
Y/N laughs with slight triumph – like all she wanted was to see him squirm. “It’s okay,” she shrugs and sends a kind smile his way. “Benny thinks about my ass, too.”
“I bet he does,” Dean mutters under his breath and wishes the vibrant pink would leave his cheeks soon. “Hey, uh, can I ask you a question? That softball game… did you use your powers to, uh, help us?” He watches her erupt into laughter as she lets her head fall between her knees, and he assumes her reaction means a hard yes. “So Arthur’s crotch, Mick’s shoelaces…”
She shrugs innocently, her cheeks a burning scarlet as she tries to hold in her laughter, “‘M sorry? I couldn’t resist.”
“Don’t be,” he chuckles and shakes his head. “It was fucking hilarious. ‘M gonna start taking you to all the games now, sweetheart. You think you can make Arthur pee his pants next time?”
“Dean!” Her eyes widen as she scolds him, but she can barely hide the sheer amusement that’s flickering across her features. “I probably could,” she admits sheepishly and earns a sly wink from him.
“How did you learn to control it?”
He’s incredibly curious how she’s figured it all out. She’s only been awake for barely two months while he couldn’t figure out how to do shit in an entire year. He knows she’s smarter and more driven than him, but that can’t be all there is, right? She’s also fearless, he gathers. Maybe Nick has been right all along and his fear is blocking him from unlocking his true potential. What would he do with all that fucking potential, though?
“I guess I practiced,” she twitches her shoulders as if she doesn’t quite know the answer herself. “It was awful in the beginning. I could hear everyone… randomly… all at once. But, uhm… I tried to accept it as a part of me, you know? I actually kinda like it now. Makes me feel like a badass… And I had some help. I made some new friends,” she smiles and his jaw clenches a little as a twinge of jealousy pokes his heart before she clarifies her statement, “Charlie and her roommates.”
“Ah, the geeks from your party,” he nods and lets out a breath of relief, hearing her giggle. She might not be able to read his thoughts presently, but she still knows what he thinks, apparently.
“Yeah, we’ve kinda built a super secretive lair in Mom’s basement,” Y/N confesses and shoots him a wary look as his eyebrows draw together.
“What?!” He snaps his head at her, a tame glare in his eyes as he playfully chides her, “Y/N, that’s like the first rule of Best Friends Club.”
“What, tell your best friend about your super secret lair?”
“Yeah, duh,” he huffs, chuckling before his gaze pensively drops to his lap. “But I’m glad you had some help, though. Even if I wish it would’ve been me.”
“Me too. Both those things, actually,” she tells him with a soft smile that he matches. “They’re gonna help you, too.”
“I hope so,” he mumbles and purses his lips.
“Trust me. They’re pretty smart. They do talk about D&D and Pokémon a lot, though. You’ve been warned,” Y/N jokes. “I mean, they gave me a superhero name. Imperia. Like the curse for mind control from Harry Potter?”
“Of course, they did. Wait till Sammy hears this one,” he laughs. “What would you need a name for anyways? It’s not like you’re running around the city in a mask and risking your life.”
Dean chuckles some more before noticing how eerily quiet his best friend has become. Years of experience have taught him that this is never a good sign, and his head swirls in her direction. She sits there quietly, lips tightly pressed together and hands neatly folded between her thighs. Yup, he knows that look. Same one as always since the first day they were sitting in the principal’s office together.
Her eyes are staring stubbornly at her toes and he can’t help but let out a loud, exhaustive sigh, “Please tell me you haven’t been running around and putting yourself in danger in a fucking costume, Y/N?!”
“No, uh, no… no costume,” she shakes her head vigorously.
“Thank God,” he exhales and closes his eyes, relief loosening his tense muscles.
“I’m doing it in jeans.”
“What?!” His eyes shoot open and fix her with an incredulous stare.
“Just a little bit,” she admits with a small grin, and he rolls his eyes, running a hand down his face. He’s seriously questioning what he’s done in his life to deserve all of this. Well, okay, he might have some idea…
“Look, I’m helping people,” she adds poutingly when he doesn’t respond.
“Y/N…”
“Oooh, tell him how you stopped that bullet! That was so awesome, dude,” Claire excitedly throws in.
His dumbfounded look then lands on Y/N, his brow knitting in apprehension and obviously anger, “What bullet? What the hell is she talking about? Did you get fucking shot?!”
Her mouth opens and closes a few times, eyes blinking in a furious pattern before she finally counters, “I didn’t get shot, though. Didn’t you listen? I stopped it before it could hit me… With. My. Mind. How cool is that?”
For some reason, the giant beam on her face only infuriates him more. Christ, he wants to fucking smack her ass raw. And thank God she can’t hear him right now. “Not cool! Not cool at all, Y/N!”
“C’mon, admit that it’s cool,” she begs him with an irresistible smile and tugs on his arm.
“No… maybe… shut up,” he barks and crosses his arms over his chest with a childish pout. Of course, it’s the coolest thing he’s ever goddamn heard. She’s basically Batman now. How can he not be fucking envious? Shit, does that make him Robin? Welp, that sucks… “That’s not the point, anyways! It’s probably how Nick found you in the first place because you’ve decided to play fucking vigilante.”
“I know you don’t like it when I get into danger, De. But how do you think I feel every time you run into a fire, huh?” she tilts her head at him and softly lifts her brow.
He takes a deep breath and purses his lips, “Look, if you lost me, you’d be fine. If I lose you, though, well… I can’t. That’s the point.”
“De… I wouldn’t be fine without you,” she says, her voice sweet like honey.
“Yeah?” He raises his head shyly at her.
“Yeah,” she reassures him, smiling.
“God, you two are the most dysfunctional people I’ve ever met,” Claire bellows suddenly and interrupts them. “And I’ve lived on the streets. There’s tons of crazy out there!”
Y/N snorts and bites down on her bottom lip to choke the laugh while Dean stares baffled at the rebellious adolescent two cells over. “Excuse me? You know what, blondie? I’ve had enough of you for one day, so zip it, alright?”
“What are you gonna do? Come over here and make me, geezer?” Claire laughs tauntingly and is joined by Y/N, Dean scowling at both of them before giving up with a sigh.
When the laughter drowns out and everyone settles back into the familiar silence, the only sound that can be heard is the leaking water pipe until Y/N speaks up again.
“Hey, Dean?”
“Hm?” he hums, half-tired and half-restless.
“How did you propose?”
When he looks at her, she blinks at him softly, hugging her knees as her left cheek rests on them, her eyes fixing him with a quizzical gaze.
“Why do you wanna know?”
She shrugs simply, “I don’t know. I mean, I guess that’s what you ask when someone gets engaged, right? You know… ‘How did you do it? What’s the story?’ So, what’s the story? I realized I never asked. I’m curious.”
“What, because I’m a manwhore, who couldn’t possibly plan some big, romantic event?” He knows how stupid he sounds, but he feels a little offended by her assumption, okay?
“Well… did you?”
Why the fuck does she know him so well?
“Uhm, actually…”
Fuck it. He might as well confess his sins now, right? What’s he got to lose at this point? It’s unlikely they’re getting out of this hellhole anytime soon. In fact, they might die in here, so…
The big door then suddenly slides open, and two soldiers strut inside, accompanied by General Roman. He passes Dean’s cell without even a glance and halts right in front of Y/N, shooting her a predatory smirk that Dean wants to painfully burn off the guy’s smug face.
“Ms. Harvelle, pleasure to finally meet you.”
“Well, the pleasure is all yours, dickhead,” Y/N huffs and rises to her feet, dusting off her jeans as she walks closer to the looming menace. Wow. Her fearlessness isn’t disappointing even now; Dean’s sweating. “Please tell me you’ve realized this was a giant fucking mistake and you’re letting us go?”
“I’m afraid not, Ms. Harvelle. As your friend here surely knows, you’re a very special girl,” Roman explains with a sneer, earning him only a growl from Y/N.
“Please don’t call me that,” she bites.
“I think you can help me,” Roman smiles creepily, and Dean can tell the guy is more than a little intrigued by her. He enjoys the feistiness and the fierce glare in her eyes. Dean knows because Nick is exactly the same, and he doesn’t like where this conversation is headed.
“Fine, what do you want?” Y/N folds her arms sternly over her chest.
“Well, if you help me figure out how to give some of my soldiers your powers, I might let you and your friends go,” Roman gives her the terms of his deal.
“What if she doesn’t?” Dean asks glaringly, and Roman saunters a few steps closer to him.
“Well, if she doesn’t, Mr. Winchester, I would have to find a way to make her compliant, wouldn’t I?” he mockingly muses. “Breaking such a beautiful, bright young lady surely can’t be in our common interest, I presume?”
“No, it’s not,” Dean swallows hard, the muscles in his throat straining, but he doesn’t break his death stare as his nostrils flare in anger. His grip on the bars tightens till his knuckles are a shining white. That motherfucker better hope Dean doesn’t break out of his cell. Otherwise, he’s gonna be the first one that’s fucking toast.
“Look, I don’t care what you do to me. I’m not scared of some turd in khaki. I won’t help you make super-soldiers, who are gonna hurt innocent people,” Y/N argues forcefully, and Dean’s look instantly darkens. This is exactly what he was afraid of. “You can kill me, but I won’t watch you kill the world.”
“Y/N, now’s hardly the right time for ethics and principles,” Dean grits through his teeth. Oh God, it really is the principal’s office all over again. Somehow she’s always managed to get them more detention by arguing.
“Oh, Ms. Harvelle, I was hoping you’d put up a fight,” the General sneers and then snaps his fingers. The two soldiers, who have stood idly by like guard dogs waiting for their next command from their master, come readily to his side. “Boys, take her and get her ready for testing.”
Y/N protests and backs against the wall as the two men storm into her cell and assertively drag her out. She’s fighting tooth and nail until one of them smacks her across the face and splits her lip open. If Dean sees red then and there, it’s not just due to the blood or her agonizing screams. For the first time, he truly wishes he had powers and could show his fucking fury.
Instead, his fists launch repeated strikes against his confinement as he yells his lungs out. Maybe he’ll get just angry enough to break out. “You fucking son of a bitch! You let her go, or I will burn this goddamn place down and everyone in it!”
General Roman stops patiently in front of his cell and smirks, “Good. Can’t wait to see what you can do, Mr. Winchester. Maybe we find a use for you, after all.”
“Wait…,” Dean pauses for a moment and tries to collect his thoughts, calm himself, the worry for Y/N not letting him think straight, and he needs to fucking think in order to get them out of here. “What’s this even for, huh? It’s not like your soldiers were in the explosion. They don’t have powers.”
Roman purses his lips and nods, fishing out a clear plastic bottle filled with purple pills from his pockets. “Recognize these?”
“Yeah, they’re supposed to suppress my powers,” Dean replies, but the uncomfortable feeling in his stomach tells him this can’t be the right answer anymore. Fuck.
On cue, Roman sniggers, “Oh, is that what Nick told you? He’s always been a sly little devil.”
“So, lemme guess… they do shit,” Dean spits.
“They do plenty. Give normal people mostly strength, speed, some accelerated healing… But superhumans like you also have an easier time controlling their abilities,” Roman shares smugly. “Once we find out how to put your special little magic in these, well then, nothing can really stop us anymore, can it?”
Dean’s shoulders slump in defeat at the revelation. How could he have been so fucking stupid? He briefly meets Y/N’s gaze, sees the sympathy for him in her eyes before she is hauled out and disappears behind the metal door.
His heart sinks to the concrete underneath his boots. He doesn’t know what they’ll do to her, doesn’t know when or if she comes back to him at all.
You gripped the steering wheel, a heavy exhale leaving your lips when Welcome to Lawrence sign came to view and just as quickly left it in your rearview. You came to a stop at a red light and you leaned your forehead against the steering wheel, a thunderstorm of emotions eating you up. It was fucking hard, starting new. Moving to a new city, starting a new job, a new firehouse. Station 119, your new home. Or at least that was what you were hoping. You had heard good things about it, you former captain, Captain Turner had spoken very highly of said firehouse and its team. And when he heard there was an opening, he was happy to recommend you, knowing well your situation, your need for change. It was hard, having to start over after everything, but you knew you needed this.
“We’ll be okay, we’ll be happy here.” You sighed as you kept driving, the meowing of your furry companion getting your attention. You glanced beside you to the carrier securely strapped behind the seat belt, your cat, Ares, inside. You brushed your finger against the side of the carrier where you could see his round face. You smiled sadly and sighed as you pulled up into your new house.
It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, it wasn’t big or fancy, but the second you walked in, you felt peaceful, like you could get used to this place. The place was empty, you were going to have to buy pretty much everything other than appliances. You didn’t bring much, all you had managed to stuff in your car were a couple of suitcases, a few boxes and a TV. You were most likely going to have to buy an air mattress until you could buy proper furniture, whenever you had days off. For now, you were dropping off your belongings and Ares. you felt bad for leaving him alone for so long at times, but he was used to it, you were sure he would enjoy having the whole house for himself. You set the carrier down and unzipped it, allowing the black ball of fur to roam and stretch his tiny legs. He sat by your feet, almost as if he was taking in his new surroundings, much like yourself. After a few minutes of wandering around the house and setting up the space for Ares in your bedroom, you pulled out your phone and exhaled heavily when you saw the time, you were supposed to head to the station soon.
“Okay sweetie, you know the drill,” You said to Ares as you crouched down to pick him up, the black blob having followed you upstairs. He stared at you, with the only eye he had and purred when you scratched under his chin, “I’ll come feed you every day and I’ll stay for a few minutes to play. You know where your litter is, don’t make a mess.” You spoke to him like he could understand you, you sometimes thought he did. He just purred, pushing his head against your hand more.
“Man, I wish they allowed cats in fire stations. You’re pretty badass right Ares? If dogs can be firefighters why can’t cats? Maybe I’ll make that suggestion to the chief. If I even stay long enough that is.” You chewed on the inside of your cheek, the feeling of anxiety eating you up. You sighed and shook your head, pressing a kiss to Ares' fluffy head before you set him down. “Okay, I gotta go now, please eat your food and drink water. I’ll come see you tomorrow morning.”
You were scared, you would be lying if you tried to tell yourself that you weren’t. You knew what it was like to be the new girl, the replacement, it wasn’t always pretty. It worked out at your last firehouse, you had a family, a home. Those people were your ride or die, the people you would die for, and vice versa. But all of that was gone now, and all you had was this, this blind hope that they would accept you into their family as one of their own. But knowing they had lost one of their own not too long ago, you weren’t expecting them too. You knew you wouldn’t.
It was busy, everybody going about their business, though you could feel a few lingering eyes on you as you made your way further into the house, duffel bag over your shoulder. Nobody payed much mind to you, until a younger boy with short pitch black hair and a grey shirt with the word candidate written on the back noticed your presence and stopped whatever he was doing to actually pay you his attention to you. He looked at you with a confused look at first as he stopped mopping the floors.
“Hi, can I help you?”
“Yeah, I think so,” You offered him a small smile and he quickly placed the mop back in its bucket, wiped his hands on the front of his pants and stuck out a hand for you to shake as he eyed you, quickly realizing.
“Oh, you must be the new firefighter,” He said, squinting his eyes to read your last name on the tag stitched on the front of your shirt. You smiled and nodded.
“Wonder what gave that away,” You laughed, looking down at your new uniform, one that was slightly different than your old one, this one was black instead of navy blue. The kid smiled.
“The look in your eyes, like you’ve seen a lot of crap, but you still see the good in the world. You look like you have a dark sense of humor too. All firefighters have it.”
You stared at him, your lips half curved into a small smile. He seemed sweet, funny but awkward, you had the feeling you were really going to like this kid.
“Anyway, you’re here to see the chief right? Oh and I’m Kevin by the way.”
You nodded, “Yes. And nice to meet you Kevin, I’m Y/N.” He nodded as he motioned you to follow him. He guided you along, occasionally asking questions as he led you up a flight of stairs. You thought it was sweet how excited he was about getting someone new around here and how the team would be just as happy. You could beg to differ, but you didn’t have the heart to tell him otherwise, though it was nice to hear that from somebody here, you were just hoping it was true.
Kevin waved you goodbye when you both made it to the chief’s office. You thanked him before you knocked on the door. You heard a 'come in' and you cautiously opened the door, peaking your head inside. There you saw an older man, beard with white streaks and thin hair slicked back. He had a serious expression on his face when his eyes landed on you, and that did nothing to calm your nerves. You swallowed thickly and slowly walked in, hands behind your back as you stood up straight when you stood in front of his desk. He stood up as well and offered you a tight smile that made it seem like he definitely didn’t do it often. Though you loosened up a bit when he stuck his hand out to you and you shook it before he offered you to sit. “You must be Y/N, we spoke on the phone.”
You nodded as you took a seat, “Yes sir. It is nice to meet you in person, Chief.”
He chuckled lightly, “Relax kid, you can call me Bobby. Nobody ever calls me Chief, or Chief Singer, it makes me sound old.” You let out a small laugh, mostly out of relief that you didn’t have to be so uptight and formal. He gave you a nod as he typed on his keyboard, squinting at his screen for a second before he looked at you, “I do apologize for having to do that over the phone. I usually prefer to have people come in person before they get the position, but as you may know, it’s been a bit hectic here being a firefighter down after we uh.. Lost one of our own. And Rufus did speak very highly of you when he recommended you, and as an old friend, I trust his judgment.”
You gave him a look, your heart slightly sinking at the mention of one of their firefighters. You knew perfectly how it felt to lose one of your own like that, it was a void hard to fill. “Yeah, he was my old Captain, and he spoke very highly of you and your firehouse, so I was honored to have been given a chance here without having to go through the whole process of coming down here prior to the application process and all.”
“Well your record is pretty much spotless, not a single issue during your eight years as a firefighter, and based on your recommendations, you were an exemplary member, so I’m glad you decided to come all the way down here. And I’m sure the team will feel the same.” He was standing now, and he motioned a hand for you to follow him, which you did.
“Thank you sir, I really do appreciate the opportunity.” He gave you a look as he led you down the stairs, and stopped in his tracks for a second. You smiled a little and chuckled, “Thank you, Bobby.”
“That’s more like it. Now c’mon, I’ll show you around.”
This station was undeniably big, much bigger than your last. And it was beautiful, like it had been remodeled recently and it felt very modern and comfortable. You honestly didn’t remember the last time your old firehouse had been renovated. Your last stop had been the lockers, there being an empty one, the label freshly placed in place of the old scratched off one. But it didn’t feel right just yet, you felt like a temporary replacement, like you didn’t have a place here. At least not yet. You were hoping you would be able to write your name on that label soon enough.
Once you had left your duffel bag in your locker, Bobby took you to the rec room where you wpukd meet your fire squad, he pretty much threw you to the wolves and left you to fend for yourself. He sent you off with a quick pat on the back before he was retreating back into his office, leaving you standing there, shaky hands clasped together in front of yourself as you stood in the center of the room. The team surrounding the pool table had fallen silent as their eyes landed on you, gaze glued to you like they were judging your mere presence. And the room was dead silent, so much you could hear your breath.
You were off to a great start.
You were about to speak when a brunette man with a beard and bright blue eyes approached you. “You must be the new firefighter. I’m Benny.” The thick southern accent was almost reassuring, like he was friendly. You half smiled and nodded, shaking his hand when he stuck it out for you.
“Y/N, nice to meet you.” Your voice wasn’t as shaky as you had expected it to be. But then again you no longer felt like you were being lynched under their gazes. You looked around the room and their eyes didn’t look as harsh, they looked curious even, as if they were waiting for their introductions now that one of them had actually approached you. He wasn’t your lieutenant was he?
“So, mean lookin’ girl by the pool table, that’s Meg, she’s one of our paramedics. Redhead is Charlie,” He pointed to the two women, Charlie smiled sweetly and waved at you, while Meg glared at Benny, but still gave you a polite nod. You tried your best not to look awkward when you waved at them. “Kid over there is Jack, him along with blondie next to him, Claire, are our newest additions. They’re the youngest ones here. Jack took his exam first then Claire, she was replaced by Kevin as probie. You met the kid yet?”
You smiled and nodded, “Yeah, sweet kid.”
Benny chuckled and nodded, “Agreed.” There was a bit of a smile there, like he was fond of Kevin, but then again, who wouldn’t be? “Then there’s— Meg, where’s Cas?”
“Stocking the ambulance.” She answered, resuming her pool game.
“Cas is her partner, our other paramedic. And she has the poor bastard doin’ inventory by himself. This evil woman, I wouldn’t trust her if I were you.” He grinned at Meg, who simply flipped him off in response. He laughed before turning back to you. “And Dean, he’s our Lieutenant and he’s a huge pain in the ass. But you get used to it eventually.”
“You’re only saying that because you’re pissed at him. You’re literally besties.” You heard the blond girl, who you remembered had been introduced as Claire, comment.
“The bastard drank the last bit of espresso I had left, I had to go out at five in the morning to the other side of town to get more. He should be thankful I didn’t drag his ass out of bed and made him get it himself.” Benny hissed and shook his head. You looked back and forth between them, all you could do was smile at how they interacted with each other. It reminded you of your old firehouse. “Well, if he’s not here hustling us for our money in pool, he’s probably out helping Cas stock the ambo. I can take you to meet 'em if you’d like.”
You chewed on the inside of your cheek, you knew well how the chain of command worked, and being on the Lieutenant's good side was probably the smart thing to do. So introducing yourself as soon as possible was probably a good idea. You nodded at Benny, hands shoved into your pocket as you rocked back and forth on your heels. He told Meg to pause their pool game and motioned you out of the room, the lot quickly falling back into their own conversations. Benny led you to the main lot, you spotted Kevin still mopping the floors as you walked towards the ambulance.
Two men stood by the ambulance, one with really dark hair and the same uniform Meg had inside the ambulance, his expression tired as he held a clipboard in his hands. And the other, his back was entirely to you, the muscles in his back tense and tight under his shirt as he passed boxes on to the brunette you were assuming was Cas. Which meant, this tall, tense and pissed off dirty blonde had to be Dean.
“I’m just saying man, we don’t need another fucking firefighter getting in our way. These replacements they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing.” He had this gruff and gravelly voice, and it sounded even more so as he rambled angrily. Cas sighed, slightly rolling his eyes, “I bet he got kicked out of his last firehouse and since they’re desperate here, they hired him. Fuck, they’re really just letting anyone into this firehouse.”
“I don’t see what the problem is Dean. You don’t even know them and you already decided you don’t like them.” Cas sighed again, shaking his head. He jumped down from the ambulance and stood right in front of his friend, the very slight height difference between them becoming apparent to you. He was about to speak when his eyes found yours, not recognizing you right away, but judging by your matching uniform and Benny beside you, he knew. His expression quickly changed but before he could say anything, Dean was already talking again,
“Damn straight I don’t. I don’t need another replacement here to be a pain in my ass ‘cause they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing or because they have something to prove. Bobby is probably gonna want me to show ‘em how we do things here, they’re just gonna get in my way.”
“I’ll be sure to stay out of your way then.”
You watched Dean jump, head flashing around to find you, arms crossed over your chest and face hard. He eyed Benny for a second, almost as if he was begging him to intervene, but Benny simply shrugged. Dean looked back at Cas, eyes narrowed with a sharp glare for allowing him to speak on. But Cas simply shook his head at him. Dean cleared his throat, face hard and jaw tight as he stepped forward, facing you now, “You were there the whole time?”
“Oh, no, just long enough to hear that I’m already not good enough for you, Lieutenant.” Your face was blank and your lips were in a flat line. You watched his jaw twitch as he stuck his hand out for you to shake. But it was left sticking in front of you because your arms remained glued to your chest. He scowled at you for your act of clear insubordination, but then again he just insulted you without having even spoken to you yet.
“That’s not what I said.”
“No, you just said I was a replacement that doesn’t know what the fuck she’s doing and that I have something to prove to you if I heard correctly. Did I get that right?” You raised an eyebrow at him, and the frown on his face became a snarl as he mimicked your stance, arms crossed over his chest in defiance. He stood in front of you now, towering over you as his green eyes burned into your face like he was trying to get you to back down. You didn’t. Instead you held your head up high and dead eyed him.
“And you expect me to treat you any better when you talk to your Lieutenant like that?” He scoffed, practically all up in your face. You knew what he was doing, tight and tall stance, jaw tight and eyes hard, he was trying to intimidate you. And honestly, if you weren’t so pissed by his behavior, you would’ve backed down.
“Well, if you’re right, you won’t be my Lieutenant for long anyway,” You said through the gritted teeth, your hard expression hiding the small bit of sadness you felt knowing you already had no place here. “Although in my experience, Lieutenants who act just like you, who do the whole intimidation drill sergeant thing are just overcompensating.”
“Dick jokes, really? What are you, fourteen?” He scoffed, eyebrows raised in disbelief and he shook his head in a way you assumed was meant to be condescending. But that only made you want to take it a step further.
“I wasn’t talking about what’s between your legs. I was talking about self-esteem and ego, that you try to intimidate everyone around you to make yourself feel better. Kind of like you have something to prove,” You used the words he had used earlier. And that only worked to piss him off even more. His face was red as it could get, and his jaw was wound up so tight you would see a vain in his neck, anger flashing in hot waves when he heard a few collective chuckles of the crew that had been around to see the whole thing go down. “But hey, your mind went there all on its own, which speaks enough on its own really.”
“You’re off to a great start here kid,” He muttered, exhaling roughly as he walked past your shoulder, barely missing you, but stopped to shoot the few people that had gathered around sharp glares, “The fuck are you guys looking at? Do I not give you enough work to do? No? Alright, we’re doing drills in thirty so, I would finish quickly if I were you.”
You heard them all groan, the brief amusement quickly fading and instead you felt several pairs of eyes give your dirty looks now that they had more work to do because you decided to antagonize the asshole in charge. It was a cheap move, one that would surely make them dislike you already, you knew it, and you had a feeling he knew it too. He smirked when you swallowed and you looked down at your hands to avoid the looks of your colleagues. He was about to walk, but not before he leaned down, lips near your ear so only you could hear and whispered.
“And just so you know, I can already tell you’re not good enough. I can’t wait to kick you out myself.”
His words stung, and not because he was saying them, but because you knew what he represented around here. Those words that meant absolutely nothing to him, meant everything to you, because it meant you had no future here. His shoulder actually jutted against your own roughly as he stormed off. You closed your eyes, unconsciously rubbing your shoulder, but not because it hurt, but more as to comfort yourself. Though you did feel a hand on your opposite shoulder and when you looked up you saw Benny giving you a sympathetic look.
“Told you he was a pain in the ass.”
“He’s not always a pain in the ass,” Cas chimed in when he actually approached you, an equally sympathetic look on his face, but his blue eyes looked more apologetic and like he was ashamed of his friend’s behavior. “Dean he’s… He’s rough. But he’s a good man. He’s just having a hard time with all the replacements coming and going. He was… Close, with the person who’s position you’re filling, and he’s taking it the hardest.”
“Trust me, I get it, and I’m not trying to replace your friend, but he’s not the only one who deals with loss. Doesn't mean we can treat people like shit though.” You muttered bitterly and shook your head. You knew you couldn’t compete and much less fill their friend’s place, let alone when Dean had already made up his mind about it. But you weren’t trying to replace anyone, you just wanted your own place here. Cas sighed and nodded, not knowing how else he could comfort you.
“I know, and I’m not saying he’s right. Just… Give him time. He grows on you. And you will grow on him, he’s just in a bad mood.” He reassured, awkwardly patting your shoulder. You chuckled softly, appreciating the gesture.
“That’s if I even last long enough.”
“You will, I have a feeling. You aren’t like all of the other replacements we’ve had, you’re… Different. Trust me.” He reassured you, and for some reason, he sounded genuine.
You met his eyes, they were genuine. You half smiled and nodded. You were really hoping he was right. You had the feeling you could grow to like it here, before your little standoff with Dean, you had been hoping people around here would like you because it felt right to be there, like you could make this your home, like these people could be your family. Now? Now you weren’t so sure.
“I’m Castiel by the way. And welcome to the 119.”
Yeah, welcome alright.
