Remembering the brave men who fought today 278 years ago at the battle of Culloden Moor. I was always told our family was Clan Macintosh (not sure how true bc my surname is an English name but I messaged an expert who checked records and said perhaps we were married into it or were honoured into the clan, but my Great Great Grandfather immigrated from Scotland so who knows) and they were present at that battle so perhaps men from my family were there.
Ive always had a weird feeling about April 16, ever since I was a teenager. I didn’t know if it meant something good would happen, bad, or a significant event was going to take place that day. Then I started watching Outlander and found out about Culloden. It hit me so hard. I am starting to believe in past lives and perhaps I had a family member (son, husband, cousin, brother, father, friend) that was in the battle and died. I also have a weird connection with Gettysburg. Maybe I just keep losing loved ones in battles. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Light Across the Seas that Severed (Ch10)
AO3
For the first time in years, Jamie woke without the dead weight of unsaid things hanging around his neck.
He closed his eyes and savoured the memory of the previous night, Claire’s face twisting in disbelief when he told her to go to sleep after he’d kissed the life out of her, and made a promise to himself that he would keep a level head today until everything had been resolved between them. He almost laughed out loud in surprise at the idea of a resolution to the saga that had been going on for years. And now to have heard it from her lips, to know that she felt the same and that she wanted him too felt almost surreal.
His knees didn’t crack with the same twinge of pain as he left his bed and quickly jumped into the shower, managing to give himself at least a cursory scrub before the hot water turned to ice against his skin which not only meant that Claire was awake but that she was already out of bed. He wondered if she was as nervous as he was and with shaky hands, Jamie quickly switched off the shower and tried not to think about Claire soaping up her body a few steps down the hall.
The thought of her naked and dripping with hot water might have put a little extra speed in his movements as he got himself dressed and made the way to her with the thin excuse of providing his guest with a fresh towel. Just as he quietly snuck into the bedroom and put the not-too-soft towel on her bed, which had already been made beautifully, pillows plumped and all, his eyes caught sight of a bundle that had been unceremoniously dumped outside the door to the en suite.
Without thinking, he scooped the garments up in his arms with the thought that doing a little bit of laundry might take one more small thing off her mind. The idea of it being a rather intimate gesture was lost on him, fingers grasping denim jeans and a linen shirt before he found himself touching lace. A lump formed in his throat as he looked down.
Pale lilac.
The exact shade of purple that he had seen all the years whenever he closed his eyes. The same delicate colour that had so prettily complimented her skin the night that she bared herself to him. The night that ruined him for anyone else.
So lost in his thoughts was Jamie that he hadn’t time to try to look like he wasn’t pawing at her garments when the door opened and Claire caught him red-handed.
“I’m so sorry, Sassenach, I only meant to—“
Claire’s hand raised in supplication as she interrupted him, “Don’t worry about it—“
“No really, I shouldnae have—“
They were both aware of their jabbering on but for some reason were unable to stop. Knowing that whatever came out of her mouth next would be just as useless, Claire snatched the offending item from his hands.
It was then that Jamie realised that she had the tiniest excuse for a towel wrapped around her.
“Christ, I’m sorry! I brought you another towel, a… well, a bigger one.” Jamie gestured to the bed and tried to ignore the feeling of the embarrassment burning the tips of his ears. “Ye’ll be wantin’ breakfast and coffee, I’ll see to it.”
And with that, he practically threw himself out of the room and down the stairs, cringing at the sound of Claire’s quiet giggling.
When she entered the kitchen a few minutes later, fully dressed in a t-shirt and comfortable joggers much to Jamie’s disappointment, she snorted at his inability to meet her eye.
“If I’d known a simple bra was enough to set you off, I would’ve been more careful,” she joked as she crossed the flagstone floor in her bare feet and took up residence on the bench that ran the length of the kitchen table. “Big Jamie Fraser, scared of a woman’s underthings.”
He made sure she caught the rolling of his eyes as he placed her mug of coffee in front of her.
“I am more than acquainted with underthings, just…” he trailed off before he embarrassed himself.
“What?”
“Nothin’. Ye’ll tease me,” he replied, the mischief in his own voice making her smile even wider.
“And when have I ever done something like that?”
Her fake indignation was adorable. Jamie felt his body coming alive, acknowledging the gentle ribbing that had always been so easy between them. And he also recognised the simmering tension that lay beneath it all but this time, he wasn’t afraid of it or trying to hide it. And so he placed both of his large hands on the table and leaned forward, his shoulders rounding out underneath his t-shirt which he was pleased to see had caught Claire’s eye, just as her lower lip was caught in her teeth.
He realised that they had never really flirted before. And realised how much he liked it.
Deciding that teasing her was too fun, he pulled away just the second that she instinctively moved towards him, now looking at his mouth. Claire shook her head with a start when he put the distance between herself, as if she had been surprised by being in his game of cat and mouse. Jamie decided to take pity on her and tell her the truth.
“It wasnae the bra itself. More… the colour,” Jamie cleared his throat before turning back to the stovetop to dish up breakfast, continuing. “Ye’ll think me a lecher but ’tis similar to the one you wore in Amsterdam.”
All the bravado, the confidence that he felt moments earlier evaporated with every second of silence that filled the room. When he finally turned back to face her, he was surprised to see a calmness across her face. Her head ducked as she fiddled with a curl, looping it around her index finger before pushing it behind her ear only for it to spring back to it’s original place.
“That was rather intentional, actually. I did that, over the years. Little things that brought me comfort whenever I felt alone. It was almost like I… well, kept parts of you with me.”
Well, he thought, this is new.
Last night’s confessions had paved the way for the truth to be laid bare in front of the other. It felt like they were talking together for the first time in years.
As Jamie took his seat across the table from her, he yielded, “Aye, suppose I did the same.”
Without shame or shyness, he brought his hand up in front of his body, offering her his palm. She stared into his eyes, not sure of the gesture, but instinctively took his hand in hers, bringing her line of sight down at his open hand.
“What is that? Is that—?”
Her fingers traced over the C that he had cut into the mound of his palm that day on the beach.
“I know it’s a bit dramatic but I think ye ken that about me already, Sassenach,” he grinned wryly, earning a laugh. “I wanted a way to remember you always, to tuck you away in my heart and know that my body would forever be marked by you as my heart had.”
Jamie watched as Claire’s eyes filled with tears, one solitary tear spilling over her lash line and trailing down her cheek. As he went to brush it away with the hand that she still held in hers, she swooped down and pressed her lips to the scar, closing her eyes almost reverently.
The room was silent again but the energy that surrounded them was screaming.
He felt Claire’s tongue leave her mouth momentarily to lave at the wound that had been healed long ago. Jamie immediately stifled a gasp which quickly turned into a groan when he caught the feral look that had taken over Claire’s eyes. Swiping her hand across to clear her path, she practically pounced as her knees hit the top of the table and she moved towards him in an instant, Jamie quickly getting to his feet so that their mouths became level with the other’s before Claire began to devour him.
If he had been the instigator last night, there was no question who was in charge this time round.
Her fingers seemed to have turned into claws that scratched and grabbed at him, pulling at the thin layer of cotton that clothed his upper body and mewling like a desperate animal. Her mouth was open as she panted but kept her tongue firmly against his, not letting the two of them to be separated for a moment. Jamie’s instincts took over and he put his hands on her glorious arse, lifting and pulling at her until she wrapped her legs around his waist and he lowered her against the flagstone floor, covering her body with his own.
She started to grab at her own clothes then, trying to wrestle her top from herself but Jamie’s hands stilled hers.
“Won’t ye be cold, mo ghraidh?” He whispered against her lips.
“I don’t give a fuck if I’m cold. I need to feel your skin.”
“Aye,” he breathed, pulling her up to sit and practically tearing both of their shirts off. His chest was heaving with heavy breaths as he saw her bare in front of him, her perfect breasts that he dreamt about so often. He pushed her back down against the floor so he could take her in, delighting in the pink flush that had appeared over her collarbones as he traced a fingertip across them and down.
He kept his voice quiet and steady.
“Can I touch ye, Sassenach?”
“Yes,” she breathed.
“Can I kiss ye?”
Her eyes fluttered close as he bent down to ghost his lips over the rise of her breasts, “Yes!”
“Will ye let me love ye, Claire?”
“Yes, yes, a hundred times yes!”
With her enthusiastic consent, Jamie closed his lips around one pretty pink nipple as he slid his hand under the waistline of Claire’s loose joggers, finding her bare underneath. He crushed his head against her sternum with a groan as he found her warm and wet and impossibly soft.
“Oh, Claire,” he whispered as he devoured her lips again, rubbing his finger down the length of her before gently pushing inside, earning what sounded like a sob.
His head snapped up to meet her eyes and he saw that she really was crying. Mortified, he moved quickly to retract his hand but her fingers wrapped tightly around his wrist, keeping him where he was.
“Please, don’t stop! Please touch me just like that, touch me however you like, just please don’t stop touching me! Please Jamie!” she begged frantically.
He felt conflicted in the moment and wanted to stop and talk it through but when Claire began to use the hand that she was still holding onto to rub against, he decided to trust her to know her own body and her own limits. Although he was gentler with his kisses, pouring all the love and respect that he felt for her into every own, letting his tongue slide slowly against hers as he fingers worked inside of her and the base of his palm rubbed against her aching sex. Claire was still crying slightly but he could hear the pleasure that her sobs were tinged with, could see in her eyes that she was close to finding her physical bliss and he anticipated that she would also experience a very strong emotional release.
He wanted to give it to her more than anything else in the world.
“That’s it, my lass, let yerself feel it. Ye are safe and whole and loved. My God, ye are so loved. I love ye so much, Claire. Let me hear ye, pretty lass.”
His words pushed her over the edge and he felt her contract around him with the sharp sting of her nails biting into his skin as she anchored herself to him. The scream that poured from her seemed to ripple its way up her spine, her head pushing against the floor and her back arching to the sky as her mouth hung open, eyes wide.
When her body became slack, Jamie made sure to gather her against himself to keep her from the cold floor. Claire was still breathing heavily but it calmed him to see that there were no fresh tears. Her leopard eyes were glazed and heavy, unable to quite focus on any one particular thing.
Careful not to move too quickly, Jamie got to his feet with Claire still held in his arms and moved through to the living room, gently sitting them both of the sofa and settling Claire in his lap, still skin to skin. He freed one arm from her to grab the tartan throw that hung over the back of the sofa and was amazed to see when she held her hand out for his arm to settle back around her back, as though she could not bare to be away from him for one moment. It was awkward and clumsy but he finally got enough of their bodies covered by the tartan and he felt her muscles relax as her eyes began to close again.
“Lay yer heid, lass. I will be right here when ye wake.”

Problematic Arguments
The one where Lucien isn't relevant or should be forced to deal with a broken bond and a mate who doesn't choose him in the end even though every other male mated to a resistant Archeron eventually got their HEA. Where another jealous male deems him "not good enough" so that must be the truth 🤦
Tumblr media
Lucien was based off Sam Heughan's version of Jamie Fraser in Outlander.
Lucien similarities to Jamie Fraser:
Both Jamie and Lucien were whipped.
Both Jamie and Lucien were S/A
In Outlander, Dougal (Jamie's uncle and one of six children) considers Jamie a threat because Jamie could have been competition for Dougal, as an able-bodied male of MacKenzie blood, for the bid of laird. Lucien was one of seven but was also considered a threat for the title of High Lord (to his brothers in this series).
They both have red hair and Jamie's is long in many seasons.
Though Lucien empathized with what Feyre was going through, he was also torn by what was necessary for the Spring Court as a whole. Similarly, Jamie did not truly want to punish Claire for her mistake in season 1 however he knew that in order for the clan to still protect her, he had to do it as it was the way of his people and what was expected of him.
Jamie stood up to Jack Randall on many occasions while Lucien stood up to Amarantha on many occasions.
Both Jamie and Lucien are open with their emotions and feelings and intelligent.
Both make mistakes but quickly apologize and learn from them.
Both Jamie and Lucien are fighters when necessary however they are also well educated.
Lucien was willing to die on Feyre's behalf rather than tell Amarantha her name while Jamie took Laoghaire's punishment for her.
Both Jamie and Lucien were injured when falling from their horses.
Jamie was willing to let Claire return to the future after marrying her, if that's what she decided she wanted and Lucien walked away so Elain could go back to Graysen since he knew that's what she wanted as she was still in love with him.
Jamie is a natural born leader able to navigate social situations with ease and that is also fitting of Lucien, why Tamlin made him his right hand and why Feyre says he sounds more High Lord like than an unwanted son.
This is said about Jamie: True to his sign, Jamie is extremely stubborn, much like the Frasers who came before him. He is also fiercely loyal. This is what is said about Lucien: “You know them better than I do. But I will say that Lucien is loyal—fiercely so.”
(Claire, written to be the love of Jamie's life, and Elain also share similarities -
Curly, light brown hair, brown eyes, pale skin.
Was in love (and married to) another male when she met Jamie just as Elain was in love with and engaged to Graysen (interesting SJM gave Elain that storyline in the same book she realized Elucien would be mates).
Claire did not choose to marry Jamie but was forced into the arrangement just as Elain did not choose to have a mating bond.
A nurse turned healer when she traveled back in time (💡), Claire is able to take charge and stay calm in stressful situations. Elain hasn't fully grown into herself but there are hints of this - “I’ll do it,” Elain said, taking a deep breath and squaring her shoulders. She didn’t wait for either of us before she strode out, graceful as a doe. / But Elain’s cry—a warning. A warning to— To my right, now exposed, Tamlin ran for me. To grab me at last./ But Elain said, “Nesta.” Slowly, my eldest sister looked at her. “Nesta,” Elain said again / She put a hand on Nesta’s knee, the purple of my sister’s gown nearly swallowing up the ivory hand. “Feyre gave and gave—for years. Let us now help her. Help … others.”/ And then walked to me and Nesta, who pulled back long enough to survey Elain’s clean face, her clear eyes.
Claire is nurturing, yet matter of fact and well spoken most of the time however when pushed she's a bit feisty and will swear which shocks the men of that time. Likewise Elain often says things that surprise her sisters and hoped the queens "burned in hell"
Further proof of SJMs Outlander love:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below is proof of her love for LUCIEN:
Tumblr media
Sarah J Maas also said this of Helion in a May 12, 2017 interview, 10 days after the release of ACOWAR ( the book where she announced that Lucien's real father was Helion):
Tumblr media
So it is difficult for me to imagine that SJM would base Lucien off a character she loves, a character who finds his soul mate in Claire after a rocky start and an arranged marriage, change Lucien's father to a character she's obsessed with (the High Lord of Day giving Lucien the power of the sun which Elain craves) only to have his Cauldron given mate (who he has longed for over the course of 3 books) reject him.
That would be like Claire returning to the future and choosing never to go back to Jamie which would have ended the series very early on.
Their love is epic because even though it wasn't their choice to come together at first, it ended up being EVERYTHING.
Sometimes the best things in life are the things you never expected and never knew you wanted.
If SJM considered Lucien her love, than why would she want him to have less than an epic love with his soul bonded mate? She has told us it doesn't get better than that so why would he be given less than the best when as the author she has the power to give that to him?

In the annals of Scottish history, a tale as ancient as the mist-shrouded glens unfolds, a tale of kinship, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Highlands.
Here, amidst the beautiful landscapes of Scotland, the tradition of clans emerged, weaving together Celtic, Norman-French, and Norse threads into a rich tapestry of heritage.
At the heart of this tradition lies the concept of the clan - a term derived from the Gaelic word 'clann,' signifying "family", yet extending its embrace to all who pledged allegiance to the clan chief. Whether by blood or by bond, members found solace and strength within the protective embrace of their kin.
Led by a clan chief, these communities forged a way of life shaped by the rhythms of the land-farming, tending to livestock, and engaging in the timeless rituals of Highland culture. Yet, amidst the tranquility of everyday existence, the specter of conflict loomed large.
The turbulent currents of Scottish history bore witness to countless clashes-clan against clan, invader against defender - as land and legacy hung in the balance. But it was the fateful Battle of Culloden in 1746 that delivered the decisive blow, shattering the old order and ushering in an era of upheaval.
The Highland clearances dispersed clans and severed bonds. In the hearts of those tracing their lineage to Scotland's soil, the spirit of the clans endures, a testament to community, resilience, and the timeless majesty of the Scottish Highlands.

Medicine and caring for the people of the Clan MacKenzie seemed the most logical way for me to earn their trust, but in order to do that without raising suspicion, I would have to find a way to apply 20th century medicine using only the methods and equipment available in the 18th.

On June 6th 1944 Allied forces stormed the beaches of Northern France on what became known as D-Day.
There were no doubt many acts of bravery on that day when the tide started to turn against the Nazi regime that ultimately ended World War Two. I shall concentrate on one, but will also tell you about a German sniper that day and a wee tenuous brave Canadian.
‘Piper’ Bill Milllin landed on Sword Beach on the Coast of Normandy as part of the 1st Special Service Brigade in the second wave of the operation.
Pipers were banned from being on the frontline during the Second World War because of the number of casualties seen during the First World War. The enemy figured out that the piper helped boost morale to the Allied troops, and they were slaughtered because of this. This led the War Office to restrict their presence in camps as well as on the frontline.
Millin pointed this out to his Commanding Officer  Brigadier Lord "Shimi" Lovat  Fraser, hereditary chief of the Clan Fraser, who was a law unto himself. “Ah, but that’s the English War Office, Millin,” Lovat told him. “You and I are both Scottish so that doesn’t apply.”
As Bill Millin embarked from the landing craft and waded through chest high water making his way toward dry land, high above his head he carried his pipes, the only weapon he would need that day. Around him bullets flew, mortar shells exploded Bill_Millin1and his friends, comrades and countrymen died, but Bill carried onward.
It was what came next that made Bill Millin a legend! Lord Lovat, the Chief of Clan Fraser and Brigadier of the 2,500 commandos, instructed the 21 year old Bill Millin to fire up his pipes and play a tune to inspire the men. And with the five words ‘Give us “Highland Laddie” man!’, the Legend of ‘Piper’ Bill was born.
Amid the carnage and destruction Bill Millin played as he had never played before. While marching up and down the beach of Normandy, Millin played the tunes ‘Hielan’ Laddie’, ‘The Road to the Isles’ and ‘Blue Bonnets over the Border’, and at one point added ‘The Nut Brown Maiden’ for a redheaded French girl who had strayed out of her home.
The day would see Millin and his unit march four miles inland to a point known as Pegasus Bridge, which was a strategically vital point for the German 21st Panzer Division. D-Day was the turning point in the Allies’ battle against Hitler and ‘Piper’ Bill Millin stands a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice made by ordinary people in extraordinary times.
Facing the soldiers coming ashore that day was Horst Hrubesh, German machine gunner, he too can be seen as a hero of sorts, if you read the poem he penned, I will let you decide;
Scottish soldier play your pipes
Even though your in my sights
Just like me you have a wife
I aim above your head
For full five minutes i fire up high
Keep my bullets up in the sky
No mad piper, you will not die
I will not lay you dead.
Now at my Nazi captains call
He wonders why you do not fall
They drag me from my post in haste
Another gunner i am replaced
In a cell now i await
Whats sure to be a bloody fate
Jack boots stamp across the yard
By my cell with windows barred
Soldier friends i stood beside
Now gather in a long straight line
Blindfold no i did decline
To see their faces full of guilt
As they take my life for i shalt not kill.
Horst Hrubesh was German , but not a nazi, he paid the price for his act on D Day.
Tumblr media
The third person to get a mention today is James M. Doohan who landed ashore at Juno beach. Later that day se would be shot 6 times, survive and go on to become Scotty on Star Trek.
Doohan was a commissioned lieutenant with the 14th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, and was tasked with invading an area of Normandy code-named Juno Beach. As the meme states, Doohan successfully led his men across the beach littered with anti-tank mines, and also managed to take out two German snipers:
Lieutenant Doohan was however not shot by a German sniper. He had been shot by a nervous, trigger-happy Canadian sentry.
Doohan said. "We landed safely, thank God, through those Y-shaped steel barriers you see in the film, tracer bullets, all that, none of our men hurt, and dashed 75 yards to the 7-foot tall dunes," Doohan said.
"Crossed a minefield, found out about it later: It was meant to blow up tanks, and we weren't heavy enough. Moved up through a down - hardly a town just a village - called Graye Sur Mer, saw a church tower that was a machine-gun post, firing off to our left.
Doohan took out the machine-gun post with a couple of shots. "I don't know if they were killed or wounded, but it shut them up," he said.  The Canadian soldier later said he didn't notice the gunshot wounds in his legs until he got to the medic who told him;
'You also have four bullets in your left knee.' I said: 'Well, I walked here.'"

Okay, I have a (hopefully!) fun discussion question for you in line with the teaching tool I'm working on for my class: Do you think the show sets up Jamie Frasier and BJR as foils and, if so, does it do so effectively?
Goodness @lyledebeast you really cannot give me a better Ask than that!
Answering these questions comprehensively would take a very long time because there are so many different parallels drawn between the two characters across both versions of Outlander canon—the show itself and the novels that inspired it. Indeed, the establishment of Black Jack Randall and Jamie Fraser as foils happens early and consistently in both the TV adaptation and the book series.
So my short answers are: Yes, absolutely the show sets up Jamie and Black Jack as foils. And yes, I think it does so quite effectively!
As a refresher for readers, foils are characters established with intentional comparisons and contrasts to differentiate unique aspects of each persona. Protagonists and antagonists often get established as foils to elucidate one another’s positive and negative qualities. I would definitely say this happens consistently between Jamie and Randall in Outlander canon—and in both directions at that.
Although it would take quite a lot of words, even for me, to provide a comprehensive overview of all the specific things both the show and the books do to establish Black Jack and Jamie as foils for one another, I can give a concise overview of the foundational work each version of canon does to set up the continuous parallels drawn between the two characters. The original Ask addresses the show specifically, but I’d never miss an opportunity to encourage y’all to flex your reading muscles! So I’ll include additional details provided in the books for context that enhance the TV adaptation’s framing of Randall and Jamie as foils.
For my money, there’s no better illustration of the foil dynamic between the two men than the juxtaposition of the two main flogging incidents from Season 1 of the TV show and its equivalent content in Book 1 / Outlander in the novel series. First is the retrospectively narrated 1740 sequence set at Fort William, wherein Randall flayed the upper layers of skin clean off Jamie’s back with with a nine-tail whip. Second is the live-action 1743 sequence set at Castle Leoch after Claire Beauchamp gets rescued from Fort William, wherein Jamie beats her with a belt for disobeying him and thus putting himself and his clan in danger.
On the show the belt scene is played mostly for laughs, but we do get an edgy scene subsequently in which Claire menaces Jamie with a knife and tells him he’d better never raise a hand to her again unless he’d like to get dismembered. I enjoyed that scene quite a bit. Stick him with the pointy end and all that! That said, it’s missing a critical bit of intrigue from the books that further cements the foil dynamic between Randall and Jamie. Specifically: In the book version, Jamie explicitly tells Claire that he got a sexual charge out of beating her because of how angry she got and how feisty it made her.
If this sounds familiar, consider how Black Jack tries everything he possibly can to get emotional responses out of Jamie. Not just while raping him at Wentworth Prison, but also years before while flogging him at Fort William. His whole aim in whipping Jamie that second time was to get him to cave and have sex with him, having made a bizarrely earnest proposition the previous evening that got rejected after Jamie gave it some thought.
Rather a lot of thought, to wit. In both the show and the novels, Jamie notes that he ultimately turned Black Jack down because he didn’t want to let his dad down by ceding control to someone else. He doesn’t indicate being put off himself by the idea of having sex with another man. Likewise, he doesn’t think his dad would be disappointed in him for sleeping with a guy if he did that of his own volition. Randall seems fully cognizant in both versions of canon of Jamie feeling some conflicted attraction to him and enjoying winding him up. So he figures it’ll take more effort to persuade Jamie to his position.
I’ve explored this in my “Shaking in the Light” fic wherein Black Jack explains the Fort William incident to Mary in his own words. In both that “Dispatches from Fort Laggan” continuity and several of my other stories, Black Jack and Jamie discuss the flogging and each of their respective motivations in that interaction. All of this draws on the canonically established character traits of both Jamie (physically, as established by his own behavior at multiple timepoints including the beating he wholly unnecessarily jumps at the chance to take for Laoghaire MacKenzie) and Black Jack (emotionally, as established by the Duke of Sandringham’s comments about him) being gluttons for pain.
Perhaps the greatest irony here is that between Black Jack and Jamie, we only ever get evidence of one of them beating his wife—and it very much isn’t Randall. Confirmed later via Black Jack’s son Denys Randall in Book 9 / Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone wherein Denys contrasts his mother Mary Hawkins’s memories of his father with her experiences of being married to his stepfather Robert Isaacs, who did beat her. Tracks absolutely with what we knew about Black Jack when he was still alive, mind. Whatever else one might say about him, he was always good to his family and cared about doing the best he could for them.
Then of course there’s Claire herself constantly fearing losing Jamie to Black Jack in both versions of canon. An understandable fear given how resoundingly obsessed Jamie remains with Randall even decades after his death! During early installments when Black Jack still lives, Jamie keeps deliberately goading him into snapping and doing violent things to him.
NB: It absolutely is not Jamie’s fault that Randall rapes him. Anyone who thinks the survivor of a rape is ever at fault for what happens, no matter what they did, can shut the entire fuck up.
However, in many other cases Jamie does go out of his way to antagonize Randall and goad him into fighting with him. The best example of this is the duel (actually multiple duels given the first one gets averted) to which Jamie challenges Randall in Season 2 and Book 2 / Dragonfly in Amber respectively. Definitely one cluster among several, though.
And Claire is far from the only person who notices this. Perhaps the best narration of these observations though comes from Dougal MacKenzie, whose disparaging comments about Jamie in Season 1 of the show are amplified to a damning degree by additional context from Book 1 in the novel series. When Dougal is giving Claire his own retrospective on the events at Fort William three years prior, Claire asks him why he’s telling her all this. He says he thought it might serve as an illustration of character. She thinks he’s only referring to Randall at first, but he clears up this misconception swiftly. He’s definitely referring to both men—and he isn’t wrong in the slightest.
Both the books and the show include a recurring theme of Black Jack and Jamie experiencing a lot of the same stuff emotionally but only one of them actually understanding the assignment of what’s going on between them. Nowhere is this more clear than in S1E15 “Wentworth Prison” on the TV series, wherein Randall sits down solemnly across from Jamie and asks him why he’d rather die than so much as talk to him.
The interaction that follows is about as close as Black Jack ever comes himself to saying the unsaid, which is fairly clear from both the show and the books. He’s trying persistently to get Jamie to understand that he understands what it’s like both to be pressured into sex and to feel ashamed of wanting something he knows will be destructive. The show makes it pretty clear that Randall himself is being coerced in all manner of ways, including sexually, by the Duke of Sandringham. I could probably write a full monograph on that dynamic alone! For now I’ll simply note that Black Jack’s explicit awareness of the similarity between himself and Jamie includes that particular dimension of shared experience.
Let’s not discount either that by this point Jamie and Black Jack have each saved each other’s life once already. Randall rescues Jamie from the gallows earlier in the episode looking like he’s about to shit a brick for almost not making it down to the Borders in time. And earlier in the season, in S1E09 “The Reckoning” just before he and Claire jump into the bay to escape, he leaves Black Jack unconscious on the floor of his office instead of slitting his throat. At this point Jamie doesn’t know that Claire has a vested interest in Black Jack remaining alive due to him being her 20th Century husband Frank Randall’s purportedly direct ancestor. He spares his life because he doesn’t want to kill him, and says as much later on.
We see this kind of parallelism a lot with the two of them. Including in Book 2 where we get an explicit retrospective from Black Jack about having “taken from him what he has taken from me” during the night at Wentworth Prison. Randall is both finding comfort in some of the only positive memories he has and trying to explain to Claire that Jamie actually does feel something for him—something particular that she can’t take away no matter how much of a hold she might have on him. Glorious bonuses abound in Book 1 as well given everything else we see from that night that didn’t make it into the TV adaptation. Including Randall sobbing copiously and telling Jamie he loves him, begging him to admit he loves him too.
Then there’s also a show bonus for that element of canon: the infamous “don’t stop” sequence from early in S2E02 “Not in Scotland Anymore” when Jamie is having one of his many dreams about Black Jack. TL;DR: A basic functional understanding of anal sex allows clear determination of which man is getting penetrated in that footage. Randall is eating it up and begging Jamie for more. Iconic. Also totally in character.
Again, every character-establishing moment we’ve gotten for Black Jack up to this point indicates clearly that he’s desperate for people to respond to him with passionate emotions. He’ll take what he can get obviously; if that means making someone furious with him or frightened of him he feels that’s better than nothing. But it’s not what he wants most. Jamie reflects this valuation of passion himself many times in both versions of canon, including but not remotely limited to the belt scene referenced above.
In the books it’s likewise strongly implied (before being confirmed later by Randall himself) that Jamie fucked him later in the night while they were both delirious and losing their minds in that dungeon cell at Wentworth. What he says to Claire in S1E16 “To Ransom a Man’s Soul” about Black Jack succeeding in making him realize things he wanted makes far more sense in light of this additional information from Book 2 and the show canon exchange between Claire and Black Jack at the tavern in Inverness where a grieving Randall is busily drinking himself into a stupor.
That about covers the early foundations here. Of course a key difference between the two men—and indeed a central driver of both their dynamic as foils and their antagonism of one another—is the difference from one man to the other in acceptance of sexuality.
Although very aware and resentful of the stigma surrounding both bisexuality and sadomasochism, Black Jack accepts his sexuality enough to be fairly open about it in comparison to other canonical queer characters in the Outlander universe. He does this with a considerable amount of internalized self-loathing, sardonically referring to his “unnatural tastes” and noting he’s well aware of how people see him. But he doesn’t deny his sexuality or attempt to escape it.
Jamie, by contrast, never manages (at least so far) to square with his capacity for attraction to people of similar sex and gender. He remains haunted for decades on end by his constant dreams about Randall, a plotline developed much more in the books than on the show. But damned if the dreams we do see on the show—as described above—aren’t incredibly telling.
In the books Jamie’s dreams about Black Jack only get more sexual over time. He becomes consumed with the dreams to the point of rambling about them constantly to his wife and his sister, both of whom have also experienced Randall getting frisky with them unsolicited. At one point in both the show and the books, Jamie notes to Claire that Randall absolutely succeeded in making him realized he wanted sexual intimacy with men. Then there’s also his sexually and romantically charged friendship with Lord John Grey, who himself has always been open with Jamie about his feelings beyond the platonic. But he still never acts on it—at least so far, though that could change in Book 10 and/or the final season of the show which will cover that content.
For now, I’ll note that Jamie’s dreams also clearly delineate the dynamic of him and Black Jack being foils. And for a final bonus, consider the dream sequence from Book 6 / A Breath of Snow and Ashes suggesting Black Jack as a foil for himself when he shows up in mirror image on both sides of Jamie. That, dear readers, is another topic for another time!

Boleskine House
United Kingdom
Most people know Boleskine House for its two most famous owners, occultist and writer, Aleister Crowley, and Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page. The bizarre happenings date back centuries before either of them ever set foot on the land. Many say that the Highlands are overflowing with ghosts, and Boleskine only adds to that claim.
Aleister Crowley bought Boleskine House in 1899 with the express purpose of performing an elaborate magickal ritual there. Part of this ceremony involved summoning demonic entities and binding them with the goal of removing their negative influences from the magician’s life.
Legend has it that the house was built on the site of a 10th century Scottish kirk or church which had burned down killing the entire congregation trapped inside. Across from Boleskine House is the Fraser clan graveyard. Before the graveyard was there a medieval church stood on the site which had a reputation for strange activity. The only building that remains is a small mort-house which is where the coffined body would remain under guard until it was of no use to the grave robbers prevalent in those days. One legend suggests that there is a tunnel linking Boleskine House to the graveyard.
Over the years there have been various reports of strange activity on the site of this property. According to legend, it’s built upon the ruins of a 10th-century church that’s said to have burnt to the ground during a congress, killing everyone inside. This could explain the strange fires that have taken place here with no found cause over the years. Other reports of strange deaths to Crowley’s Housekeeper’s children are recorded, suicides, attempted murders and people acting very much out of character.
With such a dark and twisted history, haunted by demons and devastating fires, perhaps it’d be best to let the House of the Unholy remain empty.
