Batman/Bruce loves him so much I can’t get over the innate tragedy and love of this relationship like you know what???#you know what’s ungodly good and fucked up???? that tragedy permeates every inch of Bruce and Harvey’s relationship more deeply than any#other element possibly could but one and the one thread thicker in the relationship’s entire being is love#it’s a tragedy it’s tragic but it is never /quite/ as fucked up and tragic and it is deeply deeply kind and sweet and full of love and the#kind of hope that only exists at all because of it. the way Bruce in BtAS immediately starts reading books on the disorder before he even#sees him again? the letting himself almsot get shot to get through? Telltale finishing his bloody fight in the ruined front hall of his own#home by telling him ‘I still believe in Harvey Dent’. ?? The way movie The Long Halloween Bats doesn’t even know Harvey /super/ well by most#human standards but Bruce has literally no friends and never had except Alfred and Gordon so to him this is one of his closest friends and#that’s not a joke it’s real? when he spends the entire last third of part 2 desperately trying to help and telling everyone Harvey’s his#friend and needs help?? it’s real. when he tells Gilda ‘he was my friend and I failed him’? when he compromises his code in a massive way#for the first time and let’s someone get away with murders so Harvey can retain the one little piece of anything he still has which is#having protected the perosn he loves? it’s real. he means it. that’s his best friend.#they’re so *makes incomprehensible upset hand gestures*

☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
You and Norman had a mutual liking to each other. It was obvious except for the both of you. The whole family kept teasing both of you when your both in your separate ways. You don’t have the smarts of the trio but your grades is as almost as high as them.
You always play with your siblings when your allowed to go outside. You were a great hider and seeker, your determination never goes unnoticed by the white haired boy.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
After Conny left the house, she left her stuffed animal. You, Emma, and Norman decided that you three would give this to her before she left.
You three tried on finding Conny at the gates of the orphanage. You three first noticed a truck. Emma called for her, telling her that she had forgotten her Little bunny.
You were curious on what’s inside the truck which was covered with a curtain. Curious, you moved it and stumbled back in horror. Norman and Emma immediately rushed to you and also saw Conny with a flower sticking out her chest.
You were going to cry until you three had heard footsteps. In a flash, you three hid under the truck and decided to eavesdrop. You decided on trying to see who they are and what they look like. You almost screamed once more when you saw them. Luckily, Norman covered your mouth before you could scream.
You, Emma, and Norman escaped in time before you three got caught. Once you three were in a safe distance. You were on your knees and cried. Emma did the same and hugged you. Norman looked horrified and sad as well at the image of your dear sister now dead. Discovering her corpse is what leads to the three of you to discover the orphanage's true nature.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
[Timeskip to Norman’s shipment]
You, Ray and Emma had tried to convince Norman to escape or at least to pretend he escaped. But he didn’t listen and accepted his fate. You and Emma were with the others while Ray was at the staircase. You tried to stop him from leaving but Norman only pushed you away and scolded you. It was noticeable that he was also hurt on leaving his family he had grown up with. It was more painful to him to leave his first crush, you were what made him determined on escaping Grace Field.
You sobbed as Norman cupped you cheeks, making you look at him. He kissed your forehead and told you it was going to be fine. The statement only made you cry more. “It’s time to go” Isabella told him, smiling. Norman nodded and gave her a small forced smile. He looked at you one more time before letting go. “Yeah.”. He stood up, leaving you alone crying.
You didn’t watch him leave, since it only pains you more.
After they have left, your siblings tried to comfort you. “Norman.... Norman..” You kept repeating his name. You were broken. You and Norman were so close, feeling someone close leave your life pains you.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
A few days had passed you stopped playing with the other children. They told you that he will be fine and that he would give us letters and tell us about the outside world. But you knew the truth, their words won’t heal you as much as before, but their attempts made you slightly smile and nod. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
Isabella smiled as she looked you and Emma who was surrounded by other kids. She had thought she have finally stopped you all from escaping.
The thought of Ray’s shipment soon after Norman’s made you panic. Emma has been trying her best to escape for the family to escape with her. She wasn’t entirely hiding it to you. You didn’t know her plan, but you hoped that it works.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
You and the others (Except for the younger siblings) were now running through the huge forest. Trying not to run into demons. “Luckily we have that guide with us. It’s such a huge help.” You muttered. Emma nodded, smiling. After being underground and leaving safely, you were relieved.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
[Skipping to when they found the B06-32 Shelter made by William Minerva since I forgot what happened before that]
“We’re here! B06-32.” Emma exclaimed, looking at the information from the pen. “But there’s nothing here...” Someone murmured. “What can we do? This is really... B06-32.” Emma commented.
“What does it mean?” “There’s nothing here!” “No sigh of any kind... Nothing at all...” All the hope gathered from them disappeared. ‘As smart as William Minerva. He wouldn’t show the shelter from the naked eye.. So that means it’s probably hiding here somewhere..’ You thought. “So, can you see anyone in the area? Any humans?” Ray asked. “I think there’s no one...” Nat answered.
“So Minerva isn’t here after all?!” “But why?!” They cried. You tried to reassure them that it’s somewhere in B06-32 hiding somewhere. ‘We came all the way here... For nothing? What to do...’ The others who didn’t hear you wondered.
“LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIREEE!!!” The younger siblings exclaimed, making everyone flinch at the sudden loudness. “He said he would be here!!” “He told us to come visit!!” “AND WE CAME AAALL THE WAY!!” They shouted. You didn’t stop them, instead, waiting for them to tire out. Once they stopped, “Feel better now?” Ray asked, crossing his arms. “Yeah!” They exclaimed, panting.
“Then calm down and listen.” Ray said, gathering the attention of the others. “If Minerva is the one going back and forth between the worlds... Then he won’t always be on the demons’ side.” Ray added.
“And even if the demons usually avoid these deserted areas... Imagine if humans just stood around like sitting ducks, or if they left obvious signs... They wouldn’t last long, right?” You continued. Ray nodded at your explanation. “Emma, the pen.” Emma handed Ray the pen. “Yesterday, I found out about the next part. The contents of the pen go on after what we had seen.”
“And what did the next part show?” Gilda questioned. “Nothing at all.” Ray answered. “To be more precise, nothing I could see.” You sighed in relief at the second statement. You almost thought you and your family will be stuck here forever.
“What do you mean?” Emma asked. “I couldn’t access the rest of the data. I’m sure I put in the right answer, but even then... No matter how many times I tried, I could only see as far as Minerva’s message from before. Norman too, couldn’t access the data in that house. I think that’s because... The pen will only show the next part once you bring it to a certain location.”
“You mean...” “Exactly, here in B06-32.”
Once you all cracked the code. It showed a map. “It worked!!” The young ones exclaimed. “But... What’s this..?”
“It’s a map... There’s an underground entrance! As expected.” You answered. “It’s around that area! Go look for it!” When the map showed ‘Welcome’ and ‘Unlocked’, the ground began shaking. “Ray! Look! Something’s happening!” Emma exclaimed in panic and alarm. ‘Here it is...’ You murmured to yourself.
Ray opened the trapdoor revealing a ladder and the underground shelter.
“It was really here after all...” “He wasn’t lying!” They exclaimed, making you smile and giggle slightly. Once your feet was on the shelter floor, you walked with the others to see rooms with numbers. ‘102,103...’ You counted the numbers placed at the door.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Once you saw the man. You immediately thought ‘His... His manners are just terrible!! You grimaced completely shocked. You looked at your siblings to see the same expression you have.
“Are you Minerva?” Emma asked, in a serious tone. “Nope.” The man answered. “Too bad for you, kids. I’m not William Minerva.” He continued. “Then please call him. We came all the way here in order to meet Minerva.” Ray told him. “He ain’t here. What a shame, huh? No Minerva’s around here at all.”
‘What’s the meaning of this?’ You wondered, in a shocked face. ‘So Minerva was really a dirty liar...!?’ “Calm down.” Ray reassured. “Clearly you know of Minerva, too. We need more information. Where is he right now?” Ray asked sternly. “No idea, Man!”
“Who are you? What are you doing here?” Ray interrogated. “Who am I?! I’m your senior.” He showed a pen same as the one Emma, you, Norman and Ray found. “It’s the same pen...” Alicia muttered. “Senior?”
“Yup. Well, not from Grace Field, at any rate.” He showed his mark which was on his abdomen. “I come from a plantation called Glory Bell. I escaped it 13 years ago... With my colleagues. And thanks to this pen.”
“Same as us...” “He’s like us...” They muttered in relief, and shock. “That’s right. I’m just the same as you. Ended up here while searching for Minerva.” ‘Human beings like us... Living outside the walls!!’ You wondered. “How-ever...” The word made your smile you had falter. “When I finally reached the place for real, Minerva wasn’t around. I waited for him a hella long time, ended up living here, and no trace of the man. No way around it, Man’s a dirty liar.”
“Though, I gotta say I’m grateful for this shelter, y’know?” He added. “Everything’s provided for. Hurrah for my man Minerva!!”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Here you are now, standing beside Gilda. Seeing that Emma had a gun pointed to her head made you heartbroken. ‘Will she die? Please no..’ You silently pleaded as tears threatened to fall. “Hand it over. Your pen, kids. Fork it already. I’ll be keeping it so that y’all with never step in here again. I don’t wanna anyone weighing me down. Sorry, but you guys will have to leave.”
“Well then, gimme your pen and get the hell away from my face. Otherwise, every single one of you is gonna die right here and now.”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
[Timeskip to when B06-32 was exploded and Andrew pointed the gun to Alicia]
“IDIOTS! DAMN IDIOTS! I’M THE ONE WHO IS ALIVE! HEAVEN IS ON MY SIDE! AHAHHAHAHAAHAHA!” Andrew laughed maniacally. Emma shot his joints. Andrew ran to Dominic and shouted “I’LL TRAMPLE HIM TO DEATH
DIEEEE!!! YOU PIGS! YOU ARE BEINGS MEANT TO BE EATEN!” His loud tone in his voice attracted a stray demon. The demon opened it’s mouth and began eating Andrew. Andrew shouted in pain. You were scared but you exclaimed. “Now’s our chance, Run!!!” You shouted, running to the opposite direction of where the demon is and back to the previous place all of you were in.
“No way... Even Yuugo and Lucas...” “They’re dead...?”
“It was an honorable end for them... Protecting all of us until their last breath...” Oliver mourned. The others did as well. “Uuu...” You looked at Gillian, who was in the verge of crying. “UWAHHHHH!!!!” She broke down. The others looked at her, who was also in the verge of crying. Soon after, everyone broke down.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Ray shot an owl. “This is it.” Ray said, showing the owl. “This is... An owl?” Nigel was confused. You looked closely and said “No, look closely. That’s a camera.” You pointed to the owl’s eyes. The others gasped. “How do that guy know where this place was? How were they able to weave their way through the blind spots of the cameras at the shelter? This would be the answer to those.” Ray explained.
“This thing pointed out the position of our cameras and informed them of where the place we escaped to was at?” Pepe asked. “Most likely. I should have noticed this quicker. When I think about it, this thing had been getting closer and closer and following us...!” Ray cursed to himself for his mistake. “This place is no good either. We need to leave it behind immediately.” He added.
“Oliver.” Emma called. “Yeah.” Oliver nodded. He showed the note to the others. “Everyone.” He called out. “Lucas received one last phone call.” Relief washed over everyone. “Mister Minerva could still be alive...?”
“No, we can’t know that for sure.” “It could also be conceivably be one of the ‘supporters’ that are still living...” “An ally...!”
“It hurts...! I’m so frustrated...! Do we really not have a life where we can just rest once...!”
“No, we don’t. So in order to get back, that’s why we’re fighting. Before these two months are over, we’ll definitely change the world.” Emma reassured. “We can do it. We will do it!! For Yuugo and Lucas!” She exclaimed. “So to that end, we should go! As long as there’s hope, we can make it anywhere and everywhere. Let’s go with everybody! To the place that’s calling out to us!”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
??? POV: (If you have read the manga chapter, you would know who it is. If not, I feel sorry lol.... Sorry)
“That broadcast. I hope it reached the shelter.” He said. “Yes, it had to have.” A figure told him.
“Let’s get started, James.”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Your POV:
“7-3-5. 9-4-1. 10-10-7. 13-11-2. 21-8-4. 150-6-3.” “These numbers...” “It’s the same as before.” “Correct! It’s the code based on Minerva’s fantasy book.”
“Page 7, 3rd line, 5th word... ‘Go’. Page 9, 4th line, 1st word. ‘To’.” Emma murmured, concentrated on the code. “Oh yeah, I remember it now! We did that when we first found the shelter!!” The kid exclaimed.
“Now we put all the words together, and...” “What’s a Jaw of the Lion?” “How do you ‘Go’ there?” “Ah! I saw that on the maps, back in the shelter! When we were looking for the temple and the golden waters!”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
You were surprised and happy when you saw the younger ones’ abilities for over the years. You were always with Emma and Ray that you can’t always be with them.
“We can handle this trip, no problem! We all learned from Yuugo and Lucas!!”
“Everyone, Stay here! We’ll be back!” You shouted when you heard a noise from a demon nearby. “Y/n! Now!!” Ray commanded. “Roger!”
‘This feeling... It’s demons. There are demons around.’ You murmured when you ran with Ray and Emma. When the three of you were finally in the source, you looked in surprise as you saw 2 people. ‘Huh?! People?!?!’.
‘Who are they? Why are they here?’ You overthought, you were interrupted by Emma. “We need to save them!” She shouted. You took your arrow and began aiming for the demon’s eye. Once the demons’ were dead, Ray threatened “Don’t move.” While aiming at the guy. “Who are you, and what are you doing here?” Ray interrogated.
Unexpectedly, one boy turned around and went to his knees and bowing his head low on the ground. “THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!” He shouted. You looked at him shocked. “I WAS SO SCARED-!! I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE DEAD BY NOW, I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE EATEN~!! THE GUNS THAT WE HAD BROUGHT WITH US, AND EVEN THE CLOTHES THAT WE HAD ON US WERE EATEN!!” He explained in a loud voice. “REALLY, THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!” He clinged to your arms (Since you were the closest) and thanked you. “OI, YOU IDIOT, GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF THEM!! TO DO SUCH A THING TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAVED OUR LIVES!!” The other shouted. Then something struck them.
You looked at them sheepishly, curious. “HUMANS!?” They backed away in shock. “THAT’S WAY TOO LATE! AFTER SUCH A LONG TIME?!” Ray and Don had both the same expressions. You giggled. “WE’RE SO SORRY! WE’VE BEEN RUDE TO YOU AGAIN!” Two of them apologized once more. “Ayy...! You’re voices are too loud!” “The enemy will notice us.” Both Don and Ray scolded. “So, Who are you? What are you doing here?” Emma asked.
“Right. My name is Jin. And this is Hayato.” Jin pointed to Hayato who has a bandana. “I can’t tell you all the details, but... We are working under a certain person to achieve a goal... And because of that...” While Jin was explaning, Hayato noticed the mark on your neck. “AAAAHHHHHHH!!!” Hayato shouted. “We told you that you need to stay quiet!!!” Don whisper-shouted. “Jin!! There people. NO WAY! They’re the Grace Field escapees!!”
“We’ve been searching for all of you. Under William Minervas’ orders!!!” They explaned. “Mister Minerva?!” You looked at them in disbelief.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Earlier, Hayato and Jin (Mostly Hayato) have been talking about William Minerva (Aka their boss). Everyone was shocked and impressed at William Minerva’s doings of saving many children.
“Your Boss, Minerva told you to search for us?”
“Yes! Did you receive the broadcast? After that, knowing that the shelter was going to be attacked, the boss sent us to scout for you... The boss was heart broken. He conveyed to me that he want to help you out and needs your power as well.” Jin answered. “Mister Minerva...” They murmured happily. “We heard the broadcast, and right now we’re headed to that place he told us about.” Oliver commented.
“Then all is well! By all means, let us guide you there. To our hideaway!! Our base has food, as well as places where you can rest. And that’s not all. We also have medicine and treatment facilities. It’s ideal for treating anybody that’s injured. Let us take you as soon as possible.”
“That hideout.” Hayato and Jin looked at you confused. “It hasn’t been found out by other demons or the Ratri clan, Has it? Even though you’ve destroyed several farms already...”
“Up until this point, we haven’t been attacked by the enemy.”
“Hey Jin, About how far from here is your hideaway?” Ray questioned.
“Uhhm, and what about the ‘Neck of the Giraffe’? Is it near there?”
“You mean ‘the lion’s jaw’?”
“No. That rock is just the halfway point. From there, the hideaway is about a 2 day walk. The exact location is unknown to all but a select few within our group.”
“Sorry for doubting you. I’d like to ask you for some information.” Ray said.
“But is it okay? Taking outsiders like us directly to your hideout.” Anna asked. “Of course! It’s what the boss wanted us to do. And because you are all our saviors!”
“Thank you.” Emma and Hayato shooked hands. “I look forward to working with you.”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Emma, Anna, Ray and Hayato went to one of the enemy’s base since Cristy’s condition is unexpectedly changing.
Once they went back, you noticed that there was another person with them. You smiled as Cristy’s medicine was working.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Two days later...
You looked at the trees in surprise. “I can’t believe these trees!” ‘It’s a forest!” “But way bigger than all the others we’ve seen!”
“Is the hideout in there?” Oliver asked. Jin nodded. “Yes! We’ve almost arrived.” You were excited and nervous to finally find their boss and other children like you. “I’ll go ahead first to tell the boss about you folks! Jin, Zazie, show the way to our friends and keep ‘em safe!” Hayato said before he ran faster than a normal human speed. Everyone except for the said two was surprised at Hayato’s incredible speed.
“Here it is. This is our hideout.”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Jin showed all of you the places and you looked at all of them in awe. ‘They all have smiles on their faces.’ You thought, smiling yourself.
“Welcome!” “Whoa! The fugitives are here, Dude!” “Nice to meet you!” “Welcome!” The kids greeted. ‘This is the paradise that Minerva built...’.
The other kids gave all of you sweets, which you thanked for. Hayato came back and said “The boss wants to meet the leader!” Oliver nodded to Emma and she nodded back. “I’ll be back soon!” Emma waved. You all waved back and talked to the other kids.
You are lying if your not curious what Minerva looks like.
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Emma showed ‘William Minerva’ the family. “This is our family now!” She happily exclaimed. “It’s gotten quite large. What a great family!” You know that voice...
“Hu.. Huh?! What do you mean?” “Wait what?? Minerva was...” “You’re alive!? The real thing?!” Everyone started to tear up. You weren’t looking for a short while, interested in the books. Once you heard them talking, you looked at them confused. “That kid is from Emma’s pictures..” “Eh?... But that kid was.” “22194, 22194.” Adam repeated. Of course! You remember that number!.
“NORMAN!!!” The kids shouted. “I’m so happy. You’re alive!! You’re alive!!!”
You looked at the trio happily hugging each other. It made your heart melt. “Where’s Y/n..?” He asked, hoping to see you in the big crowd of his family. The others who were blocking your figure moved for him to see you. You looked at him with tears in your eyes. “I missed you Norman!!” You broke down and tackled him.
Tears also started to fall in his eyes. He hugged you tightly and both of you were in the position for a few seconds. People looked at both of you knowingly that you both deeply care for each other. “I’m so glad you’re alive..!”
☽✧ ✦ ✧☾
Norman gave all of you of where your home is. And the four of you played chess and many more. You rested your head on Norman’s shoulder, Emma was beside you resting her head on your shoulder, Ray rested his head on the bed and Norman’s other shoulder, and Norman was resting his head on your head, holding your hand.
Norman hoped he could confess to you one day. And he knows he will. He just hopes it will be sooner than later.

A Letter from Norman reactions
Tonight I was feeling like reorganizing the notes I took after reading the novel for the first time. Just some random personal reactions I had after reading it; if anything catches your attention and you'd like to know more about a particular event from the novel, please feel free to ask and I'll be happy to help!!!
Under the cut because it's l o n g. That is, if Tumblr allows me to add a "read more", which has never happened before, but I'll keep hoping in it.
• Disclaimer: I'm suing anyone who ever said that the novel is all about NorEmma. I've literally put off reading it because I didn't want to get into something overly romantic while there's??? Nearly nothing about it that is romantic??????? Just a slight mention in that last chapter and that's it???????? Why are y'all like this
Prologue
• I need you all to know that the important letter™ through which Norman informed Emma about his plan starts with him describing the weather. I just think it's a relevant information.
• Ok I'm at freaking page 1 of “A letter from Norman” and. NORMAN IT'S A FREAKING LETTER TO EMMA NOT A SHAKESPEAREAN PLAY THERE'S LITERALLY NO REASON TO BE THIS POETIC
Maybe, I would get it if it was directed to Ray, but to Emma?????
Chapter 1
• Emma in 2038: Let's befriend ghosts
Emma in 2047: let's befriend demons
Seems like a logic consecution to me
• Ok but why has nobody ever mentioned the extremely precious Emma / Gilda moments in the novel???? My heart was completely melting that was the most adorable thing I've ever read??????
• The way Norman is constantly in awe of Ray is so adorable... Baby is so sweet I swear, he deserves the world
Chapter 2
• OK BUT THE SWEET EXCHANGE between Ray and Isabella before him and Emma go out at night?????? Ray is so pure is swear... He's a precious baby who didn't deserve all the shit he went through.
Reporting it in case anyone's curious; for context, Norman is sick, and Emma wants to go out look for a flower that she's read is going to help him feel better. Emma and Ray are convinced that Norman is going to die because babies are just that dramatic, and easily impressionable as well. They're seven here.
“ «Ray, I'm counting on you!»
Isabella pressed an hand on the boy's shoulder, who turned his face to her and diligently nodded, before continuing: «Differently from Emma, I don't think the flower is going to help Norman heal».
«What do you mean?»
«However, it's better than having to sit back and watch without doing anything. I too, like her, want him to heal as soon as possible.»
«Sure, I understand...» ”
NOW that hits so hard. You have to understand, this is after Ray had made the deal with Isabella. He had already started to plan the escape. In this occasion, he was on a very thin line: alone at night with Emma, outside the House, a child who knew the truth. Isabella knew those were the right conditions for him to attempt an escape, so she decided to test his loyalty; one misstep, and their deal - which was fundamental for the escape Ray was planning - would have ended.
But at the same time, Ray needed to go. Because, just like Emma, he just couldn't stand to lose Norman. And to see these three children caring so deeply about each other even at such a young age makes me honestly bawl. This is quite certainly my favorite thing from this series. And Ray deserves the world.
• Ray was so determined to save his two friends, he even considered for a moment, in the woods, to tell Emma the truth about the orphanage. I find it very nice how the novel hinted of all these times Ray almost revealed the truth, it really puts emphasis on how he was trying to find the best moment for the escape- but it also hints to how desperate he was to share this grievous burden he was forced to carry for the longest time.
• “ Ray, you must keep on living, Norman whispered to himself like a prayer. ”
I'm... I'M 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Doesn't help the fact that this bit was literally at the end of pages of Norman praising Ray and how brave he had been for so long.
• “ Nobody in the House would have wanted for Ray to pay with his life to amend the silence of all those years. ”
I love this bit. Nobody between the children ever hated Ray for speechlessly assisting to dozens of his siblings being lead to death, because they all immediately understood how much he was suffering, how powerless he must had felt, and also, even though it only led to him being even more hurt, how deeply he loved them all. It's really nice to realize that no children ever hated Ray- no one besides from himself. His siblings love him unconditionally, and that's precisely what he deserves 🤧🤧💕💕💕
• Norman: *adventures in a detailed description of Ray's features and gestures for no other apparent reason than the fact that he finds him pretty*
Chapter 3
• Ok I know people use to see Ray and Susan's interactions under the light of Ray having a crush on her but honestly? I think they make the cutest brotp. I never knew how much I needed Ray-having-an-older-sister content untill now.
• For real though!! What hits you really hard is to find out, even though he would had never ever showed it, how desperate he was to have somebody care about him, and to be loved. He literally grieves for losing someone that looks after him and is there to check on him in his lowest days- we know it's the thing Isabella never gave him. Man, this boy didn't deserve all the shit that happened to him. Tpn may have become an old known story for me, but Ray's sufferings in his early age will never stop tearing my heart apart.
• Ok, I wasn't ready for all this angst on Ray's part. I mean, I obviously know GF were hard times for him, but I didn't expect for him to take over the pov. Sis, how wrong I was. Now I'm crying.
• Coming to the realization that Ray's initial plan actually was to bring everyone in the escape, but he clearly had to give up on it after having realized it would have been impossible to save them 🥺🥺🥺
(I mean it was not impossible. He believed it was. But it wasn't.)
• Ok but. The last part of the Ner chapter. I really don't want to spoil it for anyone because it really was a beautiful chapter but I really need to say: Emma and Norman. The way it wasn't just Ray always being there for them, protecting them from afar; no matter their blissful ignorance, they have always been there for him too. They never abandoned that lonely boy, and they made it so that he could have a last reason not to give up. A single, dim light of hope in that pitch black, devastating world he was born in. I may or may not be crying my eyes out.
(Btw I had written this before the Ray special chapter came out, and it's kinda funny to look back at it now)
• The thing with the Ner chapter is: you enter in it after reading two chapters of normal, wholesome children's stories. There's a dark undertune in it, but it's very subtle and it doesn't interfere with the happy, cheerful atmosphere of these children facing adventures together with each other. But then the Ner chapter strikes, and the Ray pov arrives, and it's like being beaten with a bat in the stomach several times. Deep down, you had always known it; but you suddenly realize that all these children are going to die. And, even worse, there's one child who knows. There's one child who has to assist to everything powerlessly. There's one child, one freaking-nine-years-old who knows that all his siblings are going to die, and there's nothing he can do. That a single mistake could ruin the chances of making just two of his siblings survive, which is everything he's hanging to right now. One child who only needs to be loved. Well that... That hits hard.
Me expressing my thoughts: girl this form is shit you can't write something that is understandable to save your life can you
• Also can we please appreciate Norman taking so long to get out of the forest as it's a recurrent characterizzation of his character to be desperately willing to live just *French chef kiss*
• I really like how the novel underlined how Norman's choice of sacrificing himself corresponded to a betrayal toward his friends (when you think about it, Emma definitely felt betrayed). It's almost like in his last moments Norman chose to switch roles with Ray, taking on his shoulders the burden of being both the traitor and the sacrifice.
Chapter 4
• Norman: * “ He instinctively closed his eyes and abandoned himself to the sweet memory of that time he understood how deeply loved he was. ” *
Somewhere, Ray: Can't relate
• Emma: Norman, what you want to do when you grow up?
Norman: It's a secret.
Me:
Tumblr media
• “ Ray woke up before everyone, as usual. ”
A remarkable detail. You'd think Ray, as a good depressed person as he is, would sleep more than the average. The truth is: he doesn't sleep at all.
• Norman: There's... Another person I like
Me:
Tumblr media
• OK NOW WHY did none tell me about the nine (9) lines of Norman / Don interacting it was worth reading the novel solely for that.
• WHY DID NONE TELL ME ABOUT DON ALMOST STRANGLING NORMAN AND MAKING HIM LITERALLY PASS AWAY IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH READING THE NOVEL SOLELY FOR THAT
• Reading about Conny being there hurts a lot but reading about Sadie and Hao brings up a totally different kind of pain. Also who the hell is Cindy?
• Norman: Oh yes, Emma and Ray, my most dear friends, my closest siblings, the reason I wake up in the morning, my only reason to live, the ones I'd entrust my life with,
Also Norman: Dunnot in the last thirteen hours and six minutes they have been acting pretty sus, I'm kinda sure they're betraying me somehow ://
• “ «I agree, but it feels like you've fallen down a rabbit hole. You're restless, you constantly look off...» said the raven haired boy, distorting his mouth in an hardly intelligible grimace and giving his friend a meaningful look.
«Norman, about that mysterious girl...»
«No, you're mistaken! I...»
Norman, filled with frustration, raised up his voice, starting to lose the coolness that was usually characteristic of him.
«But I haven't said anything yet!»
That being said Ray, with slightly mocking doing, turned on his feet and went away, leaving Norman like that. ”
I LOVE THIS BIT SO INEXPLICABLY MUCH I'm always *so* in for Oreo finishing each other sentences / reading each other's thoughts. Here, Norman answered Ray's question before he could even expose it, because he already knew what it would have been. Equally, Ray knew what Norman was going to say even though he cut his answer halfway through.
I love how much on the same page they are, they really... Totally and fully understand each other even without words, and I find it so sweet. Seriously, their dynamic is so wholesome
• Norman's last birthday gift: the thing that matters the most to him: his family's happiness
Emma's reward: the thing that matters the most to her: her family's happiness
Some things hit harder than others.
• I don't know like. When you read the novel after the series has ended, everything hurts so much more, because you know these are all memories Emma has lost forever.
• So you made colorful clothing by "coloring old clothes"? Have fun realizing y'all have celebrated Norman's birthday wearing your dead siblings' clothes
Bonus this epic note I randomly took I completely forgot the context of:
• Isabella is a bitch. I don't give a fuck about your dramatic past woman, leave that boy alone
(When the protect Ray mood hits™)

Gilda (1946): An uncoventional femme fatale
-Isn't it wonderful? Nobody has to apologize, because we were both stinkers, weren't we? Isn't it wonderful? -Wonderful.
Tumblr media
Gilda could be the ultimate example of a film in which a single scene transcends the entire film, making the viewer forget about everything. Some may not have even seen it yet, but they do know of that iconic striptease.
What is film noir without the relationship between the protagonists? What is left in a film noir when we strip it of this element, of those murky and sickly as well as fascinating relationships?
Make no mistake: the sophistication that characterizes film noir would be meaningless without the protagonists. And in this sense, Gilda has its own characteristics, something of a film noir, but with a development in its characters very different from the genre.
Here, the femme fatale doesn’t need a man to lead "to perdition." Her reason for being isn’t that, far from it. Therefore, Gilda breaks with that film noir rule; here the protagonists drag each other in that whirlpool that only brings misfortunes, which is resolved in a totally different way in this film.
One of the characteristics of film noir is that of the love triangle although, in this case, we could speak of two love triangles, one of them very particular. At the beginning of the film, we see Ballin rescue Farrell from the street, from the underworld of Buenos Aires.
Tumblr media
He has saved his life; one feels indebted and the other responsible for the act. Next we see the third component of this triangle, the cane. A cane that hides a  a deadly weapon.
Tumblr media
Ballin: It is a most faithful and obedient friend: it is silent when I want it to be silent, but talks when I want it to talk.
Farrell: Is that your idea of a friend?
Ballin: That is my idea of a friend.
It’s not trivial to consider that cane as another member of the relationship between the two men; in fact, when Ballin introduces Gilda, Farrell says: "I thought we were three already”, referring to the cane.
Tumblr media
That strange triangle is agreed upon and closed with the following words by Ballin: “This I must be sure of, that there is no woman anywhere. Gambling and women do not mix.” Farrell becomes Ballin's right-hand, his best friend and confidant.
And there it is, the second triangle, and this time, the real one. Ballin appears with his new wife, Gilda, Farrell's old love. As they walk up the stairs, guided by Gilda's siren song, Farrell mumbles an "I hope everything is as before", which sounds more like a wish that he knows won’t be fullfiled; his relationship with Ballin isn’t going to be the same as before. He stands at the bedroom door while we see on his face that he recognises the voice, that voice that he has heard sing so many times in the past.
Tumblr media
Ballin tells him that "he seems stunned" listening from the doorway. When Farrell reminds him of the "no women" pact, Ballin replies "my wife is not a woman.” And it is then when Ballin asks Gilda the question:
-Ballin: Are you decent? -Gilda: Sure I’m decent.
Tumblr media
The tension between Gilda and Farrell is evident. We don't know what happened between them (that could be another movie), but the wound there is palpable; Ballin is no stranger to that, he realises it perfectly. The Casino workers notice too, in fact they joke about it. When Ballin asks Gilda not to call him "Mr. Farrell", but Johnny, she says "Johnny is a very difficult name to remember and very easy to forget."
And here that obsessive triangle unfolds, so obsessive that, despite Ballin's suspicions that Johnny and his wife knew each other from before, he asks him to stay near her, to take care of her. It seems to be a game that Ballin enjoy. That macabre game reaches its height during a dinner in which the three share a table, in which they toast the misfortune of the woman who made Johnny suffer:
Ballin Mundson : Now then, before we were interrupted, I believe we were about to drink a toast. So: disaster to the wench who did wrong by our Johnny. No, Gilda? You won't drink to that?
Gilda : Why not? Disaster to the wench!
When Farrell admits to Ballin that they knew each other from before, he says, "I taught her what she knows." Up to that point we can imagine what Johnny has meant in Gilda's life. Thinking that Ballin is dead, Gilda and Johnny get married in a wedding that could predict what comes next: we only see her through a window, through the rain that falls outside.
Johnny begins to punish her by leaving her alone, humiliating her, to such an extent that she has to go see him at the office: “Hello. Do you remember me? I am Gilda, your wife ”. Farrell enjoys humiliating her; He lights her cigarette by placing the lighter at waist height, so she has to "bow" to light the cigarette.
Tumblr media
She married Ballin out of revenge on Johnny, and he marries her to humiliate her. So much so, that their new home is dominated by a huge portrait of Ballin. She is a prey to her past. She tries to run away from Johnny, but wherever she tries to go, he torments her.
When everything is over, Gilda surrenders and decides to leave the country; He returns to ask her to leave together, while apologizing for his behavior: “We were both scoundrels. Isn’t it wounderful". That obsessive triangle becomes a couple of neurotics, in which with their strange relationship of emotional dependence., they feed each other until they reach the point of recognising that it’s wonderful that they don’t have to ask for forgiveness or that anyone is guilty of anything, the two have been just as awful.
But Ballin returns from the shadows to claim what is his: his wife.
But prophetically it’s a member of the previous triangle, the knife hidden in the cane, that is going to solve this triangle, and this time forever. Ballin dies at the hand of his best friend,
The tagline for the film announced that "there is no woman like Gilda". There may not be a more iconic female character in film history. She has such strength on  screen that perhaps because of that the viewer may not have been able to judge her in depth. She has nothing to do with the rebellious woman we all thought her to, nor is she a man-eater; Gilda is simply different. She is a woman with an apparent happiness, that hides an immense sadness and melancholia.
A woman who complains about "so many people and so much loneliness.” Her need for attention and love is palpable. From the moment she meets Johnny Farrell, The expression on her face changes: the past has returned. When Johnny first goes to the ballroom run by Ballin, he meets a beautiful woman and, when he asks about her they tell him: she is a harpy.
Harpies, fantastic beings with the face of a woman and the body of a bird of prey. In Greek mythology, they were the beings in charge to enforce the punishment of Zeus to Fineo, stealing his food. Later on, various traditions gave them malevolent connotations, carriers of catastrophes.
Tumblr media
When Ballin appears to be dead, Farrell finds himself between two harpies reading Ballin's will and instructions.
Tumblr media
Gilda can’t be considered the classic film noir femme fatale. She seeks to torment Johnny, but in order to make him  jealous, her end goal is not money, as is often the case with the film noir woman; She is in love with him, she marries Ballin for money, yes, but it’s a question that Ballin was not oblivious to when he married her; for him she is a beautiful and hungry little girl.
He feels like a man, he realises himself as such by feeding her. But Gilda's wound is very deep; referring to Farrell, she says: "I was once loyal to a man, and look what happened." Ballin justifies her marriage to him: “She said she was born the day she met me. The three of us have no past, only future. Interesting, right?". Those same words are the ones Johnny used when he met Ballin, who had been born the day he met him.
There are two very important themes in Gilda: hatred, hatred that’s been shaped by Gilda’s pain. She reiterates many times how much she hates Johnny, but it’s a simple excuse; She loves him so much that she has had to turn the feeling into hate as a barrier against pain: “Hate can be a very intense emotion (…). Hate is the only thing that warms me. ”
And Farrell in turn thinks about her: “I hated her so much that I couldn't forget her. I was in the air I breathed.” The reunion with Johnny makes her want to plunge into a self-destructive spiral that, that would destroy everything she knows.  Her words to Johnny are very significant: "I hate you so much that I would destroy myself to drag you down with me."
But the love game she plays with Johnny reveals something else: She doesn’t hesitate to be seen with other men to arouse his jealousy, a game into which she falls very easily. At the Carnival, with another identity, with a mask, they dance as it seems they did before. She’s mischievous: “I can help you regain practice. I mean dancing. "
Tumblr media
He asks her to throw her hat back. He shoves her away violently while she laughs amused. The love-hate game between them is very powerful. We can’t forget the famous slap that he gives her ... although he doesn’t escape a few himself. The game of erotic power play and violence often present in film noir is very noticeable here.
Tumblr media
When he takes Gilda home, she does’t hesitate to stress again and again that they are alone. He can’t avoid the temptation and goes up to the bedroom. She has removed her disguise, she is Gilda again, a Gilda in the shadows. They hesitate whether to approach each other or not: "I hate you so much that I think I'm going to die from it ... darling." Their neurotic behaviour could be summed up in this phrase, in that kiss during which the two explode when they say that they hate each other to death.
Gilda’s death drive leads her to an obsessive superstition, another important theme in this film, in which she leaves her life and actions in the hands of that belief, she sees signs everywhere and subjects her life to that destiny. The night the three of them toast to the misfortune that Johnny suffered (herself), she is afraid to drink the glass, as if consuming the champagne closes a pact with the devil.
But after a moment of doubt, she drinks without hesitation, as if that liquid were a poison and she wanted to die right there. She doesn’t care that she’s toasting to her own misfortunes. She’s so superstitious that when she tells the maid, she asks her not to repeat it. Whilst being in luck at roulette someone says "lucky in the game, unlucky in love", and she stops playing to avoid tempting luck. On her wedding day with Johnny, a lonely, sad and glamorousness wedding, a wedding that we as spectators only see through a window, she says: “The rain has stopped. Maybe it means something. ”
Of course Gilda is not the typical film noir woman. She is a tremendously sad woman, sadness caused by love, and who seeks to flee from herself, from everything inside herself.
A woman afraid of her husband and destiny, fearful of life, in a word. In the end, feeling cornered by everyone, the only thing left for her to do is a farewell worthy of her, an iconic dance: She knows she’s being observed by everyone, especially by Johnny. A song in which she asks to blame someone else, "Put the blame on me."
Don't blame Gilda; she’s already fleeing Buenos Aires. But Johnny asks her to go with her. What was Gilda looking for? To be loved. Nothing more, nothing less. Gilda represents the “whore” who wants to emancipate herself to become a mother. Almost no woman in film noir is a mother, a femme fatale is not a mother, she’s a temporary distraction and obstacle to the hero.
But Gilda wants to escape such a condition, and we could really see her as a loving mother and living together with Johnny. In Gilda the woman could be seen as a symptom of the man, Gilda comes to substitute those other symptoms that these men have (sadistic in the case of Ballin, vengeful in the case of Farrell), and take them out on her.
Film noir always plays with appearances: nothing is what it seems to be. But in Gilda, this premise turns to "but in the end everything was what it seemed to be." That game of appearances, like at the Carnival, ends when the participants remove their mask, this time, in a violent way. Neither is Ballin the good Samaritan who saves lives altruistically, nor is his Casino his main activity, not even his death is true. We are shown his shadow on different occasions, in profile; we never see him fully.
Tumblr media
Gilda and Johnny’s life is also a lie, to bear their pain. The Casino is itself a lie, a place that Ballin uses to hide his work, and that he has arranged to be able to  see without being seen. His office is upstairs, from where, thanks to a set of lights, blinds and windows, he can see everything, like an omniscient God.
Tumblr media
It’s the only way out of the suffocating atmosphere of the game room. Gilda is no stranger to what that game of points of view can provide to her, on two occasions she knows she’s being observed by Johnny, she seeks to be observed by him, but she doesn’t see him watching her, as if he doesn't want to see her face and guess what she’s thinking at the moment. The final moment, Gilda’s iconic dance, seems meticulously prepared for him to observe her, but also for him to see how others look at her. What does Farrell do? He stops her.  He can’t stand what’s happening.
Tumblr media
Doesn't that moment remind us of this one from Paris, Texas?
Tumblr media
Or this one?
Two absolutely different women, but in a sense mirrors of each Gilda is the whore who wants to emancipate herself to become a mother; Jane is the mother who emancipates herself and becomes a whore, once Travis appears, she takes the path back to that role of mother. Could that moment that game of points of view, be the beginning of that emancipation, of that path?
That claustrophobic environment and that game of viewpoints is exemplified in Gilda and Johnny's wedding: We only see her through a window, through a rain curtain, we don't even hear what is being said inside the room. We are spectators. But aren’t we during the entire film?
Tumblr media
Gilda’s iconic phrase: If I'd been a ranch, they would have named me "The Bar Nothing.", is now more ironic than ever. No, she is not the free woman we were made to believe; she has an owner, Johnny. The mare is back with the stallion.

The Invite
Please enjoy me going absolutely feral over my silly OC and writing pre-supervillain material of her and Harvey’s friendship. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have more coming.
----
Jacky could feel Miri practically vibrating with excitement as she wheeled her from the car up the ramp to Wayne Manor. Normally Miri would never let anyone push her chair, but Jacky needed something to hold on to or she was going to be sick.
The Ripley sisters, Gotham’s jumped-up gutter trash, standing at the entrance to Wayne Manor. This had to be the start of some sick joke. She just hoped they weren’t the punchline. Security made her sweat and she had to remind herself she wasn’t on a job, and no one here knew her. She fished for their invitations and smiled rigidly as it was scanned and they were escorted in.
“It is so much more beautiful than I could have imagined! Ah, Jacky, take a picture, take a picture!” Miri urged.
“They allow that in here?”
But of course she obliged, pulling out her phone to snap a few discrete shots of the two of them. A few well dressed guests gave them a look, Jacky forced down the urge to sucker punch them, wondering how many of the elite here tonight secretly owed money to Falcone or Moroni, and how many she’d see at the end of her gun another night. Thinking about work felt wrong...especially now.
Jacky wheeled Miri down the long corridor, past the works of art hung up on the halls and the sculptures and casings in a place that felt more like a museum instead of one man’s house. Spilling out at the top of a grand foyer Miri gave an awed gasp while Jacky rolled her eyes. It was beautiful, stunning, actually. A band played while Gotham’s elite milled around delicately placed tables, danced on the cleared floor, or mingled out the veranda in the summer night. The floor to ceiling windows gave a pristine view of the immaculate gardens beyond where lights glowed, showing footpaths  and garden house where even at this distance she could see a few guests grabbing drinks.
This was a mistake. They shouldn’t have agreed to this invitation.
“How are we going to get down?” Jacky asked, observing staircases on either side of the balcony.
“I believe I can assist with that,” a voice from behind offered.
Jacky turned, wheeling her sister as she moved. “Oh, my goodness!” Miri squeaked. “Mr. Wayne..I...I...you don’t need to trouble yourself.”
Bruce Wayne certainly lived up to the tabloid shots of him. He laughed at that. “Nonsense, you’re guests in my home, allow me to show you a little trick.” He gave a wink at Miri, and if her sister hadn’t been made of stronger stuff Jacky almost certainly would have thought she’d fall for him on the spot and then Lord help her.
Waiting for the staircase to clear, Bruce moved aside the intricately carved lion’s head at the top bannister. Jacky raised an eyebrow at the button underneath. As he pressed it the stairs all retracted slowly, creating a gentle slopping ramp. Miri was impressed. Jacky had questions. With a gallant hand Bruce showed the way down and Jacky took her hands off the wheelchair, letting Miri wheel herself beside a much better looking escort. “So may I inquire as to the names of my guests this evening.”
“Oh, I’m Miriam Ripley, and this is my sister Jacqueline—”
“That same Ripley’s that own the bakery down 9th? Of course! Harvey’s told me all about you.” To his credit, Bruce looked genuinely surprised and delighted to make the connection. He smiled at Miriam, no shock there, Miri was as beautiful as a pixie in her summer blue gown and Bruce Wayne’s reputation preceded him. Luckily Miri was too smart to be blindsided.
As they made their way down the ramp, Bruce offered a hand to Jacky. “Jacqueline, pleasure to finally meet you as well,” he smiled, but years in her line of work hadn’t made her an idiot. Bruce Wayne was a flirt, he was a charmer, a playboy and probably whatever else the news rags loved to spew, but he was also a liar. The smile never reached his eyes and Jacky had the uncomfortable sensation of being scanned. Rich men must have their reasons for hiding all manner of sins.
She shook his hand. “Come to the shop some time, Mr. Wayne. I just man the counter, but I’m sure Miri could manage to make something special.”
“I’ll have to do that, Miss. Ripley.”
“This idiot isn’t taking all of your time, is he, Jacky?”
There he was. Harvey barreled in, one hand going around Bruce’s shoulders, the other still holding onto a champagne flute. “We were just getting introduced,” Bruce said with a slight laugh. Ah, interesting. That one was sincere.
“I think Harvey is just glad to have a few familiar faces here,” Gilda Dent strode over, elegant and friendly as ever. “And to be honest, so am I,” She bent down to kiss Miri on the cheek and straightened to do the same to Jacky, whispering in her ear. “We’re sneaking some drinks out in the garden later, just us lower east siders.”
Jacky adored Gilda and that made every second she stayed in her presence the best and the worst. “Bless you,” Jacky smiled, all teeth.
“Now, if you don’t mind I’m going to introduce Miriam to two of Gotham’s best patisseries,” Gilda winked.
Jacky shot her sister a clear “don’t leave me here” sidelong look but Miri only shrugged. “Lead the way,” she said as she wheeled off after Gilda. It was going to take a total of fifteen minutes at most before Miri had charmed her way around every corner of this party. She was good at that. Bruce Wayne didn’t linger long after either, remarking that he had to go put in some face time with two potential big investors.
“And then there were two,” Jacky laughed nervously.
“Jacky, seriously, thank you for coming,” Harvey said with a nervous laugh of his own. “Bruce said I had to do at least one of these investor galas for the campaign, but if I have to fake another smile at some other rich prick who doesn’t know half of what is going on in their own city I’m going to break something. You want a drink? I’m getting you a drink.”
He talked a big game at being out of his element, but he smiled and shook hands with every single person they passed on their short trip to the bar. Jacky followed a few paces behind. He knew everyone’s names. Of course he did. Harvey finished the last of the champagne, setting the glass down at the bar top. Jacky opened her mouth to order when Harvey spoke first with her exact drink of choice.
“Whiskey sour, hard on the syrup, better make it a double.”
“Right, I’m filing a restraining order because you shouldn’t know that,” Jacky cocked her arm back to give him a jab on the shoulder, but stopped herself. They weren’t out at some dive bar, or in the back of her shop. “Aw, jeeze,” she rubbed the back of her neck. “Feel like some kind of idiot in this getup.”
The dress was not to the caliber of everyone else’s here. She’d found it in some thrift store and liked the purple color enough to buy it.
“You look stunning.” Harvey slid her the drink.
Those words were going to get her drunk faster than the whiskey would. The drink burned a little as it went down. “Ok we got the obligatory compliments out of the way, how’s the big night actually going? You funded enough to take over the world yet?”
“Let’s start with Gotham, that’s about all I can handle at the moment.”
Jacky did not trust politicians. Didn’t like their smarmy slogans, or their false promises. Every last one in Gotham was so deep into the pockets of Falcone or Moroni it never mattered what they said. “Hey, if it takes one night like this to make you the DA then it’s worth it,” she said.
“Can we take that statement to print, Miss Ripley?” Harvey mimed a microphone in front of her.
“Enough to get the pins on the counter and the posters all over the shop’s walls, yeah,” Jacky took a long drink to get herself to stop staring. The blue eyes really drew you in, he talked to you like he really wanted to get to know you. How else would the big shot lawyer have even bothered making friends with the barista?
She finished her drink. She was going to need so much more to get through the night. “Should probably go talk to your backers, Harvey. Can’t spend all night talking to me, I don’t have the kind of money you’re looking for.”
“Oh the parasites can get me the rest of the night. You and Miri are probably the only real Gothamites here and I’d rather talk to you...don’t tell Bruce I said that. Hey, how about a dance?”
She was not drunk enough for that. “Yeah right,” she snorted. “Tabloids would have a field day if they caught you dancing at your own campaign fundraiser with a strange woman who is decidedly not your wife.”
“Or, think of the free publicity for the shop when your name gets printed in the Gazette?” Harvey said, ever the optimist. “C’mon Jacky, buy me just a little time before I have to throw myself to the wolves?”
He grabbed her hand and pulled her away from the bar towards the dance floor. Jacky shook her head, but her traitorous lips pulled back in a smile. This game of pretend was going to fall apart one day. His other hand went around her waist, warm and secure, the two things she always felt around him. This was too close. Those eyes, that smile, at this proximity were lethal. He was perfect. Gotham’s golden child. He was going to change this whole city, make it a better place, maybe give people like her a chance for once. And that meant one day he’d dance little Jacky Ripley into a nice and tidy jail cell of her own. How would he look at her then? The shy shop girl. The hitwoman. The liar.
“Harvey...you know I should probably tell you I can’t dance,” she said softly.
“Aw damn,” Harvey laughed. “And there goes my idea of having you make me look good.”

New sketched comic!!
“Beyond fake” Part 1/5! From my new au “Rewind Hope”
Explanation:
Basically, the future doesn't really end like they wish. Both plans kinda fail, Emma manages to find a way to go to human world but can't fix the demon's need of human meat and also the few powerful demons who lived are trying to find them. Kids will die even trying to reach the way for the human world.
Norman killed the royals but also his plan blackfired and his squad died, many siblings died and he is so sick that he is on the verge of death. She didn't manage to save more than his heart. It destroy her seeing him slowy dying. She is often besides of a dying Norman, holding his hand, and can't keep herself from feeling despair. She can’t hold on anymore from doing something reckless that she was thinking since the plans failed.
She mentioned the idea to Ray, but not completely. She was like "Oh, Ray... what would... you do if we had a chance to repeat everything? What would you change?" And she knows well what the mistake was. She let go of Norman. And she can't just lose him anymore.
Seeing Norman fading everyday convinced her, one day his conditions getting worse, she can’t help but just run and run. Away from everyone, the farer she can. She just disappear. But deep inside she knows what is has to do.
She goes to the seven walls again and ask the demon god for a favor: Rewind the time. Make the world go back to the day her and Norman discovered the truth. It doesn't matter if she has to give 2 rewards. Demon god surprisingly agree even before they could talk about a reward. He will do it because the reward itself is having fun, he would gain nothing besides from helping her. He is curious of how Emma will play again the big game. It's fun. Seeing the world change with little details. It's like a what if fanfiction for him. And he would ask for his reward anyway since even changing the future Emma would need to go to him again to do the promise.
Emma's body turns back to her 11 years old one but her memories are still there. Her goal is simple... Save Norman. Stop him from being shipped. Of course she thinks about it multiple times, she programs things so she can be ready to make some future events go the same. She doesn't tell Norman or Ray anything.
She arrives in the moment they find Bunny on the table. Unfortunately not everything can be changed. But this time she reminds to take LittleBunny with her while she and Norman escape. This way, Isabella is less suspicious. Cause Emma keeps all for her. But things are faster. She doesn't need to go to the wall so late, they go earlier. Ray basically keeps his plan on sacrificing the same as Norman understands he is the spy but doesn't tell him and Emma either.
They train the kids right away. But let Gilda and Don do most of the work to not be suspicious. Krone never arrives, but Emma memorized where the shelter is and they will take there the second pen Yuugo has.
So, with Isabella being less worried Norman's shipment is not set and they have time to prepare till Ray's birthday. Meanwhile Emma tells Isabella she wants to be a Mama in future and Isabella propose her to decide to not get adopted and follow her same road. Emma fully knows Isabella means a different Mama role but she still agrees. This way Mama is all focused on Emma, and the kids can prepare everything.
Norman and Ray don't agree on this cause they are worried that Isabella could discover that Emma knows everything but she manages. But even with Isabella checking on her Emma manages to keep her busy. On Ray's birthday the plan start. The fire and everything. They still manage to take Ray with them, he sees how the kids knows everything and they convince him to live. And this time Norman is with them.
Emma partly can't believe it and she is too happy. She can't fully grasp it as reality. And Norman notices of course her strange behavior since they found out everything. Norman tries to make her talk but she denies everytime even if she slowy is changing a bit. Thought having Norman by her side makes her more sure and at peace.
They meet Musica, and Norman's perspective of demons, despite being still a bit shaken off, is better. He is friend with Musica. He even tries to train his body cause... He needs to be at least at Emma's and Ray's level out there. He needs more stamina, he needs to be stronger to illness. Emma initially is reclutant about this, she doesn't like him risking with them and becomes overprotective, even knowing he is fully right about it
One day, he goes outside too with Sonju. And she goes in panic mode cause for a moment she feels like she is in the old timeline, where he isn't there. The kids are shooting arrows and says how Norman wouldn't be able too (and she misses how they say he is in fact out training for this). She revives it all and while searching for him she starts to have a breakdown, her head spinning... Was it all a failure? Time was twisting again? Was is a dream?
That's when Norman is back and find her like that, with her crying and saying how she don't want to lose him so desperately. And Norman starts putting together the pieces even if he doesn't say anything. Time passes as his mind starts to build his theory. They arrive to Yuugo, they all talk about the Seven walls and Demon God.
And he decides to go with Emma and Ray to Goldy Pond. Despite Emma trying to avoid it cause it would be risky. Things goes more or less the same. She is taken to gp, she is impaled by lewis. This will cause quite a problem cause Norman is there to see it happen and he won’t take it well. Despite having met Musica and Sonju (He doesn’t trust him) he develops hate on Lewis and the demons after Emma is almost killed by one of them.
She was panicking because she was impaled again and didn’t avoid it, but the panick raise when he mention to her to be really angry at the demons. She is afraid of what will come out of it. She is afraid of losing him again. And things start going a little off for her. Still, she tells them about the promise and the golden water they took and that's when Norman starts to understand what could have happened. His theory is semi confirmed after the discussion about Emma's injury and him going to Goldy pond with her. But he keeps quite still about that.
Time passes and things start to change more in the timeline. Emma has to change bigger things and agree to attacking some plantations so they can still save the kids and lambda crew..
They find first the new shelter in the tree of course. They also rescue many farms, lambda is one of them.
Norman propose a new plan. Which is kinda similar to the old one but also new. Being afraid of what is in the human world and the difficulties of adapting or being accepted he propose to annihilate the royals, which don’t care about their people (They visited some villages, so didn’t end up hating totally the demons), put Musica on the power and create two different kingdoms allied in the same world. Humans and demons. Emma thought is afraid to consider it for the time being.
Yuugo and Lucas thought die anyway and that's when Emma starts breaking cause she is losing control over things. Emma feels so stressed cause it's better now, but future is slowy changing and she has anxiety over trying to make some things go the same and not make it worse.
And it's driving her crazy. Even if she feels better that Norman is with her now it's like she fears their natural future. Not having the power or control over events to keep everyone and him safe. Her fear is more visible.
She was the one who no matter the situations found strenght and creativity, but she lost a bit of this, so now for her to gain it back it's difficult. Face the unknown, risk everything. For example Lucas and Yuugo died anyway and in a different place and time. But still died. That's what is driving her mad.
And that's when Norman decide to confront her about it and they talk. (the comic) He knows she must have made a deal with the demon god cause something in future went wrong and it probably concerns him too.
He doesn't ask her details, he doesn't ask her to explain. Just to confirm if she did something like that. And when she does he hugs her cause he now gets it, but he wants her to be herself. They will look after each other. She finally let out her stress and accept the future she is living is now her REAL world and not just a fake of the previous she finally feels like restarting for real.
Look up for the future, live the present and hope. And this brings her to be more straight forward also to Norman. She doesn't want to lose any time more,
And they start considering for real the new plan. That way Emma wouldn’t need to pay a promise and somehow they could still work on some solutions to make both live.
And this is where i am left!

(Not So) Safe in Hell: The Working Class Heroines of Pre-Code Hollywood
 By Heather Babcock, copyright 2018
Like many women, I was inspired and empowered by the Me Too movement but it also brought back a lot of painful memories. Most of us have probably encountered a "Harvey Weinstein" at some point in our professional lives - I know I have. This type of sexual predator lurks not only in Hollywood but in any environment where there is a power imbalance, which is most workplaces. So whether you are a waitress, a poet, a sales clerk or an administrative assistant, you learn to acquiesce. You learn quickly not to say anything because he's "the boss", "the big cheese" or he's friends with so-and-so who is "really important" and besides, maybe you totally misunderstood and who do you think YOU are anyway?! So you shut up and the silence strangles you. People like Harvey Weinstein do what they do because they know they can do it - they know that we live in a society that values money and status above kindness and integrity. They believe that their wealth and position entitles them to do what they want to whomever they want and what is worse they know the people around them believe this too.
Today, the working class and the working poor rarely see their lives represented on the big screen but this was not always the case. As I have stated here before, during Hollywood’s Pre-Code period (1930-1934), movies that came out of the Warner Brothers studio catered to a working-class audience. For a brief moment in time blue collar workers, taxi drivers, waitresses, maids and the unemployed could see images of themselves up on the silver screen. It is therefore not surprising that many of these films addressed sexual harassment in the workplace with a bluntness and honesty that is rarely seen in the movies today. (It must be noted that, according to author David Thomson in his brilliant book Warner Bros: The Making of an American Movie Studio (2017), Harry Warner rebuked actors who sexually harassed secretaries.)
“I related to shop girls and chorus girls, just ordinary gals who were hoping,” said Joan Blondell, one of Warner Brothers’ most prolific stars. “I would get endless fan mail from girls saying ‘that is exactly what I would have done, if I’d been in your shoes, you did exactly the right thing.’”**
Blondell plays a hotel maid in the romantic comedy/crime drama Blonde Crazy (1931). In one scene, a lecherous salesman asks for towels and then tries to grab her. Blondell pushes him away and angrily stuffs his merchandise – the pearls of a broken necklace – down the back of his pants. She gives him a swift sucker-punch in the butt before bolting from the room. Although the scene is played for laughs – and the laughs are at the salesman, not Blondell – her character’s frustration is palpable.
Workplace sexual harassment is presented with much more gravity in William A. Wellman’s Night Nurse (1931). In the film, the incomparable Barbara Stanwyck portrays an idealistic rookie nurse who discovers that the children she has been hired to take care of are being starved to death by their alcoholic mother’s lover (played by a young Clark Gable). The police and the head doctor refuse to help her so she must save the children on her own – with a little help from the friendly neighborhood bootlegger (Ben Lyon). Night Nurse (1931) is the epitome of Pre-Code Hollywood and illustrative of the cynicism that many Americans were feeling at the time toward authority figures and Prohibition (the bootlegger saves the day!). But it also serves as an example of the real life violence and harassment that nurses and Personal Support Workers (PSWs) experience on a daily basis (today, Stanwyck’s character would probably be called a PSW rather than a nurse). In one scene, a friend of her wealthy employer grabs and forcibly kisses her. In another, Gable’s character literally twists her arm and then punches her. For most of the film, her nurse uniform invites both ridicule and sexual come-ons. If you think that incidents like these only happened in the 1930s or in the movies, think again. In 2017, an Ontario Council of Hospital Unions poll found that 68% of nurses and PSWs across Ontario had experienced physical violence on the job at least once during the year and that 42% had experienced sexual harassment and assault. And those were just the incidents that were reported. Watching Night Nurse (1931), I had the sinking feeling that many nurses and PSWs today would sadly relate to the violence and harassment faced by Stanwyck’s character. Night Nurse (1931) was released eighty-seven years ago – when was the last time you saw a Hollywood movie about a Personal Support Worker?
Other Warner Brothers’ movies attempted to turn the tables on the sexual harassment faced by working class women. In Baby Face (1933), Stanwyck plays an impoverished young woman who, sick of being used sexually by men, decides instead to use men “to get what she wants”: namely, sleeping her way up the corporate ladder of a bank (literally “screwing” the bank – Depression era audiences must have really gotten a kick out of that!). Female (1933) took it one step further: in this delightful film, Ruth Chatterton portrays Alison Drake, an intelligent, no-nonsense woman who is the president of an automobile factory. However Alison is not all work and no play: by day, she is all business but by night she slinks around her apartment in a skimpy gown, serving vodka to her suitors (many of whom are her employees) to “fortify their courage”. Her seduction technique involves playing the music from Footlight Parade (1933) on the Victrola and tossing a silk pillow onto the floor. “I decided to travel the same open road that men do,” she candidly tells a friend. When asked whether she’d ever like to settle down and find a husband, she replies “I’d rather have a canary.”
While the shop girls and secretaries who came out to see these films in droves may have smiled and thrilled to the exploits of Joan Blondell, Barbara Stanwyck and Ruth Chatterton, most knew that they themselves would never get away with socking the jaw of a lecherous boss or breaking a bottle over the head of a grabby customer. At best, they would get fired. At worst they would end up in prison. Either way, they would be at risk of never working again. This reality is illustrated in William A. Wellman’s Safe in Hell (1931), a precursor to film noir. In this haunting film, Dorothy Mackaill plays a woman who is fired from her job as a housekeeper after her employer’s wife walks in on him raping her (this story is told by Mackaill’s character months after the assault and she never uses the word “rape”, although it is strongly implied; “rape” was considered a taboo word in the 1930s). Blackballed from finding another reputable job, Mackaill is forced to turn to prostitution.  Although she never worked as a prostitute, my great-grandmother Nellie probably could have related to Gilda, Mackaill’s character in the film. Like Gilda, Nellie worked as a “domestic servant”. Newly widowed in the early 1920s and needing to find employment in order to regain custody of her children who had been put in an orphanage, Nellie answered an ad in the Globe to work as a housekeeper for a farmer. She quickly learned that in addition to cooking and cleaning, the farmer expected her to perform “wifely duties”. Afraid of losing her children again, she acquiesced. In 1928, Nellie was found dead in the field outside of the farmer’s home: the coroner listed the primary cause of her death as suicide from poison.
Whenever I watch Safe in Hell (1931), I think of my great-grandmother Nellie and of all the working class heroines like her, whose stories were spoken in whispers - or never told at all.

SPN 8x11: “LARP and the Real Girl”
THEN: Charlie Bradbury. Things with Sam and Amelia officially end. Things between Dean and Benny officially end. The brothers choose each other.
The tree of pain thing.
RIP first victim. Drawn and quartered.
“China Grove” by the Doobie Brothers.
Ah, it’s been weeks.
“I know what you gave up wasn't easy.” What you gave up wasn’t easy either, Dean.
Garth! Sending them another case.
“Yeah, you’ve been Garthed.” hahaha
“Okay, we got to lose the GPS on our phones, because Garth has been tracking us, and other hunters, apparently, to assign cases.”
That’s what Bobby would do. Dean even said so.
Special Agents Taggart and Rosewood.
“FBI? You guys are quick. Haven't even got the body out yet.”
“Well, the FBI is all work…no play.”
Huh, is Dean going off of Sam’s recent attitude?
“Uh, neighbor downstairs said she got woke up in the middle of the night by the sound of horses stomping their feet and galloping. We didn't find any hoof prints. She probably heard a TV or was having a bad dream or she was high as balls.” I love this Sheriff.
Tumblr media
haha
Lance Jacobsen.
“We want to know about the, uh – the texts you sent Ed last night.”
“I told them when they brought me in those texts weren't from me.”
“Well, your phone and Ed's phone say otherwise.”
“No, I mean, they were from me, but they weren't from me me.”
That cleared it up.
Greyfox the Mystic (Lance), Thargim the Mystical (Ed), and Moondoor.
Tumblr media
“Oh, ye Gods! Thargrim the Difficult has fallen!” He is not taking Ed’s death well.
"Welcome to Moondoor, Michigan's largest LARPing game."
“And I thought we needed to get out more.”
Technically, they are getting out.
Dean’s right, Moondoor does look awesome.
There’s our Queen of Moons.
The tree.
OH JESUS WHAT’S HAPPENING TO HIM
RIP Lance Jacobsen. Greyfox the Mystic has fallen.
“God forbid he was contagious. I'm gonna go dip myself in hand sanitizer.” Not a bad idea at all.
Tumblr media
Moondoor looks amazing.
“Excuse me. Hi. Uh, you are a LARPer, yeah?”
“I prefer the term ‘interactive literaturist’.”
“These aren’t fake badges.”
“Uh, yeah, they are, and they're...very good, but, um, well, the I.D. number shifted to 10 digits with, uh, two letters mixed in at the end of the year, and, uh, the seal's from last month. Really good work.”
Ha, exposed. I’m sure they stopped by Kinko’s after this.
The shot of Charlie taking off her helmet always makes my heart flutter.
Tumblr media
Charlie is pissed.
“No, I buried myself. Then Dick Roman went down, his company belly-up, and I figure, ‘Hey, it's all good,’ and I was fine. I got my life back. Now you're here, and if you guys are here, monsters are here. Why do I have such bad luck? What am I – some kind of monster magnet? Is there such a thing as a monster magnet? You know what? Don't answer that. I don't care. What I care about is not getting my other arm broken... or dying.”
Tumblr media
“Greyfox and Thargrim – uh, Ed and Lance – they're not missing. They're dead.”
Charlie’s army has had a string of bad luck. “ A month ago, one of my guys had both her ankles broken before battle. Before that, I had three people have hospital-worthy accidents while at home. You think there's any connection there?”
“You know, if you, uh... move your archers back and your broadswordsmen to the west...”
“Huh. Fight the warriors.”
“Yep.”
!!
“My point, which is usually yours, is that she should get somewhere safe and get back to a normal life.” Oof, never noticed Dean telling Sam that it’s usually Sam’s thing to want people to have a safe, normal life.
“Hey, I am right here, and I want to leave.”
“Thank you.”
“But the queen...she has to stay. I mean, Sam is right. People are dying. That can't happen on my watch. And you know what? I am tired of running. I like my life here. I'm gonna stay and fight for it.”
I love you, Charlie.
Tumblr media
Dean and Charlie: “The pornstar?”
“...the poison.”
LMAO
DEAN’S SO EXCITED TO LARP!
“Beware: this is a gateway to the future.”
Maria...aka Gholandria the Wicked.
You look so good Dean!
Tumblr media
“You sent Sam a phantom text from his ex? Dick move, sir.”
“Yeah, not my finest hour.”
“So he found some normalcy with this chick, and now it's gone... again. Thanks to you.”
Uh, Sam did choose to not stay with Amelia.
“Yeah, well, now he's more committed than ever, so there's that. But, trust me, this life – you can't afford attachments. You just got to... let go.”
“Are we still talking about Sam, or did you break up with someone, too?”
Charlie kknneewww.
Tumblr media
“Now, wait a second. If it wasn't for you, we would have never been able to take down Dick Roman. Out there in the real world, you are a hero.”
What a sweet interaction between Charlie and Dean.
“I'm noticing a lot of these maidens checking you out.”
“What? I can’t shut this down. It’s good to be queen.”
I mean it, Charlie is self esteem goals.
Sam’s got himself a research partner.
“I haven't seen anything like it in my travels throughout the realms, your highness.”
“All right. Well, if you think of anything, come see me in my tent. Anytime.”
OOHHH CHARLIE’S PICKING UP CHICKS. GET IT!!
The Tree of Pain.
Dean even threatens people with fake weapons.
Tumblr media
“First time for everything, right?”
“First time for a lot of things if you want to come find my tent later.”
OH, Sam got himself a date.
“Another time.” Awww no.
Your loss.” I’d say so too.
Charlie’s sent back to safety to find Sam.
“Lead the way to the Orcs, Bolty.”
“Speak when spoken to, handmaiden.”
Uh, r u d e.
Oh boy. Charlie’s been taken.
Tumblr media
“Our, uh, pal Boltar the chatty is getting the, uh, Shadow Orc prisoner. We're gonna do a little prisoner exchange, try to draw the king out of hiding. It was my idea.” No it wasn’t, omg.
“I’m just an I.T girl...standing in front of a monster...asking it not to kill her.”
“I just want my old life back!”
“That is all I want, as well.”
Ooh, pretty fairy.
“Now, before we exchange, a few announcements. Um, there is a peewee-league soccer playoff game tomorrow on the alpha field. We don't want to freak out the mundanes, so we got to move the Battle of Kingdoms to the beta field.”  pfft.
“All right. I need real answers. This here is a real gun, see?” Dean, please.
Tumblr media
Sam barely flinched, haha.
“Is the queen really in danger?”
“Okay, we got – there was something odd down by the creek. It's this weird tent. It's not one of ours. It's kind of creepy.”
“Why are you being so helpful all of a sudden?”
“Look, I harbor an epic crush on the queen. Maybe you could put in a good word for me when you find her.”
Yeah, that ain’t gonna work out.
“My name is Gilda. I'm from the Hollow Forest of Arkhmoor. I'm a fairy.”
“Man, someone is taking this game way too seriously.” Yeah, that’s pretty much what happened.
“Gilda, my name is Charlie Bradbury, and I am here to rescue you.” Hmm, swoon.
“Why don't you take off, Bolty? We got it from here.”
“A handmaiden and a time traveler rescue the queen? I think not, kind lady.”
Screw off, dude.
Get it!!!!
Tumblr media
Boltar. You evil little bastard.
“Well, now what, Gerry?“
“My name is Boltar the Furious!”
Oh, he’s furious all right.
“My plan was, after getting rid of all of my competition, to win the battle tomorrow, convincing the queen that I should be her king.” EW COME ON.
“But then you two idiots showed up, and I was forced to improvise. Rescue the damsel in distress from Orcs, become king, kill you both – that'll work, too.” Oh yeah, kill her friends. That’ll make her like you.
Charlie destroys the book, Horcrux style.
Tumblr media
WHAT A MOVE.
“I'm free of the spell. You saved me. The Hollow Forest is forever in your debt. I must return to those green hills now. I will take my former master with me. He must face a fairy tribunal for his sins.”
So he gets to go to Fairy jail?
Tumblr media
“Call me...maybe?”
“Smell you later, bitches.”
“So, what's, uh... what's next? 'Cause no fun, right? Look, before you say anything, I – I – I get it. No amount of fun is gonna help you get over what you gave up. You just, uh... you need time, right?” AWW Dean.
“Yeah. Thanks. And you're right. Having fun won't help me. It'll help both of us. Shall we?” AWWW SAM.
WOW DEAN REALLY WENT ALL OUT
Tumblr media
AND SAM AND HIS LITTLE PONY TAIL.
Tumblr media
"This episode is dedicated to the men, women, elves, demigods, magi, druids and chamber pot servants who gave their lives fighting and winning for the Queen of Moons in the Battle of the Kingdoms. Go bravely into the next world, fallen soldiers."
I love this episode.

My Favorite Fics Rec List
Supernatural List
Defy Any and All Expectation    by @tenoko1
Chuck's newly released books tell of another war between Heaven and Hell. Team Free Will sets out to try to defy prophecy, only to realize there is a lot more at stake and amiss than the not-quite-accurate words of one Prophet of the Lord.
Along the way, Dean and Cas' relationship continues to evolve into something neither expected or were prepared for, all of their lives transforming in ways no one could have expected.
But with no shortage of cases, monsters, and mayhem, it's going to require the help of new friends and old enemies if they're to have a hope of saving the world one more time.
Alternate Season Six.
I have read this a thousand times it will always be my all time favorite story. Pairing Dean/Castiel, Sarah Blake/ Sam, Lisa Braeden/ Dean, Lucifer/Sam, Becky Rosen/Samandriel . Word:137,688
Ordained by @tenoko1
There’s one born to every generation. Joan of Arc was the first Ordained. The first of the archangel Michael's Chosen bloodline to protect humanity from Hell and monsters during a time when Earth faced unprecedented threat. Fast forward to present. Dean is the current Ordained, complete with costume change and masked allies. Mostly? They're like regular supernatural hunters who spend their nights going after whatever tries to munch on the student populace, and occasionally taking on petty crime to help out the cops. Okay, so maybe juggling double-lives, college, and romance is easier on TV, by a lot, but Dean's determined to have some semblance of a normal life while they can.
Then demons and angels start showing up and it’s up to the masked warriors to stop Hell from literally being unleashed on Earth. This was NOT part of the plan.
She is actually re-writing this story right now. It is going to be longer with more characters and i am so pumped! Pairing Dean/Castiel, Sarah Blake/ Sam, Charlie/Gilda , One sided Sam/Lucifer.  Word:46,182
The Fourth Wall Series By Entanglednow
It's all Sam's fault, really. It had just been research. Then it got way out of hand. Or, in which, fanfiction takes over their lives for better and for worse.
This has to be to me one of the funniest stories ever. I love it.Pairing Dean/Castiel, Sam/Lucifer
Due Cause by  FortinbrasFTW
"This wasn't right. Things like this didn't happen to people. First days were full of training documents and get-to-know-you chats and friendly talks with pleasant secretaries, not super-lawyers in disguise with molesting eye contact assaulting you in elevators. This really really wasn't how this was supposed to go... Maybe it wasn't how it was going. Maybe none of it was really happening to him and in a few minutes they would leave the room and all of this would go away and he'd have his normal, average first day exactly the way he'd wanted it."Sam gets his first job at the law firm of his dreams, which just happens to be the workplace of his law-school idol, who in real life is a good deal more cynical and a great deal more creepy than he might have imagined. Also: Cas runs a snack cart. Also: Dean helps.
Its like the lawyer version of supernatural with less death and more coffee. Pairing Sam/Lucifer, Dean/Castiel, Lilith/Lucifer, Crowley/Gabriel Word:93,407
How I Spent My Summer Vacation (And Other Myths)  by @scarletjedi
For the summer after Junior year, Puck and Kurt are sent to Sioux Falls, Puck to his mother's cousin, Sheriff Mills, as punishment for his stint in Juvie in hopes that she will "set him straight," and Kurt to escape the Hockey Team's violence and to learn to Hunt like his mother from his Uncle Bobby. They meet at Singer Salvage, where they're both surprised, yet very pleased, to find a familiar face. A few days later a black impala drives up with two bloody Winchesters and an injured Angel. Then all Hell breaks loose....
This was a fun story to read and a good crossover.Glee/supernatural.Pairing Dean/Castiel, Sam/Gabriel, Kurt/Noah. Word:55,221
Hear Both Sides    by Meh_forget_it
When Sam went to Stanford, he expected to go to classes, probably get a job and possibly miss Dean and be lonely. He didn’t expect to meet Loki and Crowley.
At least he wasn’t lonely.
This is a monster of a fic but its awesome! If you get into it around bedtime don’t expect to sleep. Paring Gabe/Crowley/Sam. Word:118,022
Sleep With A Gun by HollowIsTheWorld
Castiel Novak has been hunting for four years. His little brother, Samandriel, has been with him for half that time. When a job causes them to cross paths with the infamous Winchester brothers and their pet vampire, Samandriel is wary of them and wants to skip town while they can. Castiel, on the other hand, isn’t sure he wants to write them off so quickly.
Samandriel is a sassy emo kid in this and it is my most favorite thing in the whole world. Paring Samandriel/Benny , Dean/Castiel , Gabriel/ Sam. Word:88,634
The Laundromat 'Verse by @ozonecologne
Dean runs a laundromat. The punk kids come to him for all their clothing repair needs. That includes their bad boy ringleader, Castiel. A collection of ficlets.
Ive read this through a couple times now and  i still  love it. Pairing Castiel/Dean. Word:57,557
Where Are We Going From Here  by River_of_Dreams
It starts with a nightmare and an unexpected compliment. It doesn't end there. Lucifer and Michael walk the Earth again, except that this time they don't have an Apocalypse to focus on. Idle hands are the Devil's workshop, they say. What happens when those idle hands belong to the Devil himself?
This ending up being another never sleep story. Like i didnt sleep till i was done reading. Paring Sam/Lucifer.  Word:112,633
How the Other Side Lives by @tenoko1
Maybe God doesn’t always answer prayers, and maybe the Apocalypse nearly happening without him stepping into stop it had been really bad, but it’s becoming clear that things always work out, even if they don’t work out the way you wanted or expected them to, they work out the way you NEEDED.
Tenoko1 has a way that she writes characters where you fall in love with them. I love Becky in this story.  Background pairing Dean/Castiel . Word:22,442
  How To Fall   By FortinbrasFTW
'“I’ve been falling for some time, through darkness, and pain, and fire. And then I saw you, shining through the shadows, and I knew you would catch me one day. But you didn’t, I fell right past you, further than I ever imagined I could, and now I wonder if I’ve finally hit the ground.”'
When a spell goes wrong Sam ends up stranded in the north Canadian wilderness with nothing to do but bunker down and wait for rescue, which wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the broken angel he's accidentally brought along for the ride.
This was so good. Pairing Sam/Lucifer. Word:41,425. Podfic by Shmaylor
An Exercise In 'Worthless'  By Beastofthesky
"I mean, you’re–” He gestures at Cas, in his neat oxford shirt and nice pants. “–and I’m a high school dropout who tattoos for a living.”
Wherein Dean makes a hefty living as a tattoo artist who owns the space next to Gabriel's cafe. Sam attends the local university. When Gabe's cousin comes to live with him while starting grad school at Sam's university, Dean thinks for sure that all his negative karma's coming to bite him in the ass because Cas clearly has a thing for Sam. No one would ever choose him over Sam. That's just logic.
This is great you will get your dose of angst. I shouldnt say that i dont want to put you off its a good story. I might be over dramatic. Pairing: Castiel/Dean , Sam/Gabriel. Word:26,547.  Podfic by skyunicorn
Thats the list it was going to be longer but I got frustrated and kind of messed it up twice before I got it right.... I mean it might be right lol. If a link sends you to the wrong place please tell me because that was one of the problems I had. I’m not made for tumblr. Also check out the authors other works because they are all great these are just my favorite. Some of these also have podfics if thats something you are into. Oppisum does the podfic for due cause if you have trouble finding that one hit me up i did too.

Pretty Damn Good
Taeyong x Male Reader
Writer: Jaime
Masterlist
A/N: Honestly I don’t know what this is but I felt bad about not posting in a while so I wrote this. Hope you enjoy!
“Arthur is a fucking crook!”
Taeyong closed his eyes and let out a sigh through his nose when he heard his husband’s enraged shout. Johnny and Jaehyun had just been given airtime on one of the city’s most popular radio stations, so the lot of you had gone out to celebrate. Unfortunately that led to a drinking contest between you and Yuta, and now you were going off on some drunken rant about King Arthur, something that never ended well. He had to get you out of here before you all were kicked out of yet another bar.
“He didn’t even fucking exist,” you insisted as Yuta cheered you on from beneath the table. “He was just… he was just made up! The Brits couldn’t stand the English, right,” you paused to hiccup before continuing, “so they created this, this fraud as a symbol of British resistance.”
“That’s nice, sweetheart, now let’s get going.” Taeyong gently grabbed your arm and started to drag you to the door as you wriggled in his grasp.
“It’s a lie! Camelot never existed! They’re fucking crooks, man!”
“Babe, stop talking.”
“The people deserve to know the truth!” you declared to the cheers of your fellow drunks. “Don’t give in! Fight the system! Arthur was a fucking crook!”
“That doesn’t even make any sense,” he muttered while fighting to get you into a cab. “How can someone who never existed be a crook?”
“He… he cheated the people. They’ve been idolizing a man who never existed!” You leaned forward and looked at the driver urgently. “Arthur is a fucking crook!”
“I, uh, don’t mind him,” Taeyong rushed to say, “he’s had a lot to drink. He gets very passionate about history when he does.”
“Your buddy’s lucky to have such a good friend to take him home when he’s like this,” the driver replied. “Can’t imagine his wife will be very pleased to see him in this state.”
“What makes you think this kid has a wife?”
“Handsome guy like this who obviously knows a thing or two about intellectual topics despite being wasted? Kid’s got to have someone special. Classy ladies like the smart ones.” He eyed you in the rearview window. “Also the ring on his hand.”
“Ah, right.”
“Must be someone real special to put up with this.”
“Tell me about it. You should see him at weddings.”
“And you know what else?” You grabbed Taeyong’s cheeks and pulled him close to you so you could stare into his eyes. “Gildas was a fucking liar,” you whispered. “He bamboozled entire generations of people, modern historians included!”
“Why do you have to be such a nerd when you’re drunk?” Taeyong asked helplessly.
“He said, do you know what he said? He said Hadrian’s Wall was built… built…” You let out a burp and a laugh. “This old bag of dicks said Hadrian’s Wall was built after Antonine’s Wall! Can you fucking believe that?”
“Yeah, just let us out here,” Taeyong instructed the driver as you continued to rant about some old priest. “Babe, baby, let it go for a sec, will you? We’ve gotta get you to bed.” He pulled you out of the cab and handed the driver his fare as well as a generous tip. “Thank you for putting up with this—babe, could you please stop pulling on my scarf?—putting up with my husband’s rambling.”
The driver took the revelation in stride, not stumbling over any apologies or excuses like so many executives Taeyong had to deal with on a daily basis. “Like I said, you’ve gotta be someone special to put up with him.”
“Eh, he’s really not too bad,” Taeyong said as he gave you a fond smile. “We almost never lose on trivia night.”
“You two have a good night!”
“You as well, sir. Now, let’s get you up to bed.”
“—and so fucking rude about bardic poetry, like fuck off you old—“
“Haha, good evening Mrs. Flannigan!” Taeyong greeted the elderly woman who lived two floor below you as you stumbled through the revolving door. She gave the both of you a dirty look. “Y/N was just telling me all about fifth century Britain! Isn’t he so smart?”
“Your husband’s a lightweight, Mr. Lee,” she told him as she gathered her small dog in her frail arms. “You should really stop bringing him to bars. It won’t help him with his bosses at that fancy school he works at.”
“Luckily for us, his boss happens to be his best drinking buddy.”
“Hm… well at least he isn’t an offensive drunk. He only insults ancient historians.” She eyed you again with a curl of her lip. “Just make sure to watch his mouth around the children. The last thing any of us needs is a bunch of ruffians shouting such foul language in the lobby.”
“Oh, well, you know Y/N. Always the teacher,” Taeyong joked with a lame smile. At this point there was no way in hell Mrs. Flannigan would ever come to like the two of you. “Uh, anyways, have a good night! We’ll just… be… Y/N! Do not ring that bell!”
“It’s the bell of truth! THE PUBLIC DESERVES TO KNOW THE TRUTH!”
Mrs. Flannigan pursed her lips as she watched your husband corral you into the elevator and press the button with an exhausted sigh. While she would never say this to anyone, certainly not to you or Taeyong, the both of you had actually grown on her. Everyone else in the building was so uptight and boring; at least you kept things interesting, even when sober. You had this habit of telling her your lesson plans for the day when she took the elevator down with you. She walked her dog around the same time you were heading out for work. And, unlike the other couples in the building, you and Taeyong had a good, healthy and strong relationship going. If she remembered correctly, you and Taeyong had just celebrated your tenth wedding anniversary. You didn’t bother her with the constant arguing and divorces. Out of all the other residents of the building, you two were by far her favorite. Perhaps she’d even give you something for that nasty hangover she knew you’d have tomorrow. Couldn’t let you teach god awful high schoolers—no matter how rich—dealing with that. She wasn’t that cruel.
(line break)
A groan left your mouth as your alarm clock shrieked in your ear, causing your skull to practically split in half. What was it about Yuta that made you drink so much? You’d think the two of you would have slowed down after college, grad school, and gaining positions at such a prestigious school, but apparently the two of you were still as dumb as you were at nineteen. You turned over in bed slowly, seeking out the warm embrace of your husband, pretty much the only thing that could help you when you were in this state. Except the bed was empty and sheets were cold. Where the fuck was Taeyong?
“Daddy!”
You let out a grunt of surprise—and a bit of pain—as two bundles of energy propelled themselves onto the bed and threw themselves on top of you. Your children, the two people you loved even more than Taeyong—something you had never thought possible—seemed oblivious to your suffering as they chattered on about their plans for the day. What day was it? Friday? Why the fuck had the guys decided to celebrate on a Thursday night? You had classes to teach! Taeyong, the light of your life, came in to save you, whispering to your kids that they should go into the kitchen and set the table so you could get up and shake the grump monster from your system. That was his annoyingly cute way of saying hangover, because apparently your children needed to know that. Yuta, as much as you loved your best friend, got you drunk often enough to warrant the appearance of the grump monster pretty frequently. The asshole…
“Rise and shine, professor,” Taeyong whispered in a teasing voice. “Ready to face your lovely pupils?”
“I fucking hate high school seniors,” you growled while rubbing your temples. “They’re going to really fucking try my patience today. I may actually commit murder today, Tae.”
“Pretty sure Mrs. Flannigan will have some disgusting concoction for you this morning, so at least you have that to look forward to.”
“You know, as awful as they are, I think they might actually work.”
“Well up and at ‘em, babe, because if you don’t hurry, you’re going to miss that elevator ride with our lovely neighbor.”
“Ugh, I don’t wanna go to school,” you groaned as you buried your face in his shoulder. “Don’t make me go!”
“As much as I would love to have you here helping me look after the little ones, there are other impressionable youths who require your guidance.”
“Like I said, I fucking hate high school seniors.”
“And they hate you too!” he called after you as you shuffled into the bathroom. “Just know that they’ll be thanking you in their inauguration speeches!”
“If those shits ever get into office, any political office, I am actually retiring!”
He smiled as you shut the door before going to check on your son and daughter. Without proper attention, those two would probably set your apartment on fire. Whether on purpose or accidentally was something neither you or Taeyong wanted to find out, so it was better to have constant surveillance on them. They inherited their parents’ intelligence, but also learned from their uncles how to use that intelligence to wreak havoc. You guys were really regretting letting Johnny and Jaehyun babysit them that one time you joined Taeyong on a business trip. The apartment had been in constant disarray ever since.
“Hey, Dad, is Daddy gonna be okay?” your son asked as he looked up at Taeyong with wide eyes.
“The grump monster seemed really grumpy today,” your daughter added.
“Well Daddy will be officially free of the grump monster after some coffee and breakfast,” you told them as you came into the kitchen and dropped kisses into their hair. “Did your Dad make some coffee to appease the grump monster?”
“You know I’m never making that mistake again,” he chuckled, referring to the time he’d completely forgotten to make you coffee and you had been a terror for the rest of the day, even refusing to stay at his dorm for the next few days after that. “Your coffee, good sir.”
“Why thank you, my lord,” you replied in an imitation of a British knight. “Coffee is good to go, so time to say goodbye to the grump monster.”
Your children and husband cheered as you gulped down the bitter liquid and let out a loud ‘ah!’ So maybe you weren’t the most responsible adult going out and getting drunk when you had two kids at home and worked as a high school teacher, but you weren’t awful. And, looking at your happy family as they talked and laughed over breakfast, you could say that you might even be more than just not awful. You were doing pretty damn good.

The Home We’ve Made
This is my being inspired by the Addams Family. Destiel. Enjoy!
A small part of Sam always assumed he’d fall in with his brother again, even though he knew there was only a small chance.
But every time he pictured their reunion, it was a bit more... well...
First things first.
Sam doesn’t have anything against monsters or demons or whatever else might crawl about in the world. They usually keep to themselves, and despite public misconceptions, they rarely kill or even attack humans.
And yet their father spent decades convinced that they had killed Mom, only to poison himself with alcohol in the end. By that time, Sam had been long gone, and, as he found when he arrived to organize the funeral, so was Dean.
All the times he’s wondered where life has taken him over the years, he’s been worried that he’s been walking down the same path as Dad.
The last time he saw him, right before he left for college, it certainly seemed that way. Dean was begging him to stay because only as a family they could be safe. Sam told him to grow up and slammed the door behind him.
Sam looks down on the file at his desk. Arthur Ketch, one of the vilest businessmen he’s ever come across (and as a lawyer, he meets enough... indecent people), has decided to buy a certain patch of land and build a skyscraper there. problem is, monsters and their loved ones live there, and they don’t want to sell; so he’s decided to use lawsuit over lawsuit to have them declared non-people, entities with no rights of their own.
Sam’s firm just took the case – for the monsters. He’s never been gladder he decided to take this job.
It’ll be best if he gets to know them first. He believes he’s pretty tolerant, but a meeting would do away with any prejudices he still carries around.
The land the monsters inhabit is located at the edge of town, although they have slowly advanced towards their human neighbours as the years progressed. There are more than enough humans now who have no problems befriending vampires and others.
Still, Sam can’t help but think it might not be the best omen that the first thing he comes across is a demon with dark red eyes and blood on his hands.
After he’s introduced himself, the demon’s eyes slowly return to green as he grins. “Sam Winchester? Now isn’t that interesting.” He doesn’t elaborate. “You want to talk to Cassie and Dean. They’re the leaders of our little group, if you wish to call it that.”
He points at a house further down the street. “My next door neighbours. Lovely couple.”
When he sees Sam looking at his hands, he adds, “Just a little ritual, something to take the edge of. No harm in that.”
Sam nods and moves on. If he really hurt anyone, they would know about it.
He knocks at Cassie’s (Cassandra?) and Dean’s (as always he feels a pang thinking of the name) door.
The man who opens him has dark hair and incredibly blue eyes it’s easy to drown in – Sam catches himself just in time.
“My apologies.”
The siren blinks and his eyes stop glowing. “My husband has long been immune against my snares. I forgot.”
“No harm done.” Once he explains his business, the siren looks – stricken? But they wanted his firm to take the case, so why –
“You – “ the siren forces out, “You are – “
“Cas?” a voice called out and then a man – human – stepped up to them.
Sam would have recognized him anywhere.
“Dean?”
“Sammy?”
Several explanations and a crushing hug later they were sitting in Dean’s and Cas’ kitchen, and Sam was trying to wrap his head around this new reality.
Dean was married. To a male. A male siren. And was living an apple-pie life.
Even if they don’t exactly have a picket fence.
Most monsters enjoy playing with human fears a bit, and Dean’s and Cas’ house is no exception. The prominent colours are black and purple, although Dean seems to have added shades of blue and green as well; there’ something looking like a human skull sitting on top of the fire place; and the pictures of their friends...
“I met him. He showed me your place” he says, pointing to a photo that he assumes shows Dean and Cas joining him for one of his rituals.
“Crowley. A bit much sometimes, but not a bad bloke” Dean says smoothly.
“What about him?” he asks when he comes across one where someone’s chugging apparently two litters of blood from a bottle.
“Benny. Vampire. Lives down the street. Just changed his wife Andrea. Cute couple, though not as cute as we, right babe?” Dean kisses Cas.
Sam swallows. “And these two are – “ There’s a woman conjuring butterflies out of thin air, a redhead looking at her adoringly.
“Gilda and Charlie. First friends we made around here.”
“I see.”
And that’s only the beginning. After they’ve gone through the case – there really is no way Ketch can win, but now Sam wants to make absolutely sure of that – Cas leaves them alone.
For a whole of five minutes.
Crowley appears in front of them. “Hey Squirrel, how’s the family reunion going?”
“Of course you didn’t say anything.”
He smiles. Thankfully he’s cleaned up. “The ghouls were getting a little cranky, by the way. I fixed it.”
“Sam mentioned the ritual.”
“They have enough carcasses now for a while.”
“Thanks. Dinner tonight?”
“Always a pleasure.”
He dis- then reappears in a matter of seconds. “Oh, and just a fair warning – my dear mother and I had another fight, there might be more raining frogs coming.”
“They were cute anyway. See you at dinner.”
“Laterz, Squirrel. Greet Feathers from me.” He looks at Sam, then snaps his fingers. “You can be Moose. Till then, Moose.”
And he’s gone.
“Sorry” Deans says matter-of-factly, “Rituals always rile him up a bit.”
Before Sam can asks about his mother, the door bell rings. It’s the vampire from the pictures, and as soon as Dena heard his voice, he asks his brother to join him and Cas.
“Hey Benny, how’s Andrew doing?”
“She’s wonderful about it all. Also, we’ve more than enough blood, so...”
“Ah, that reminds me” Dean interrupts him, popping into the kitchen and coming back with a blood bag. “Just in case.”
“Thanks, brother. Don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“I know what I’d do” Cas mumbles softly, taking Dean’s hand. “Crash and burn.”
“Oh, hush” Dean kisses him. “You were doing fine before I came along.”
Sirens, Sam suddenly remembers, life off the love and affection they inspire by snaring people – despite these emotions not being genuine. How much more nourishing must Dean’s true love be?
Not that it is one-sided. Cas could not look at his brother like that without reciprocating his feelings.
Sam’s mind is reeling. It has all been a bit much, and he says his goodbyes soon afterwards.
“You alright, Sammy?” Dean asks, just as Crowley pops back in – literally – wondering if they need help in the kitchen.
“Yes” he says weakly. “I just... have a lot of work to do.”
It’s clearly not enough for Dean, who looks like he did that time fifteen years ago when Sam left him behind with Dad.
Before any of the assembled monsters can react, Sam leaves, feeling like a jerk even as he does.
He has Dean’s number, and he is determined to call him soon; just because his brother’s life happens to be a bit... unusual, he won’t cut him out of his again.
Dean surprises him during his lunch break the next day. “Hey, Sammy. Wanna try the best burger in town?”
“Sure” he replies, although normally he’d prefer a salad. But Dean has come, has put himself out there, so he can at least accompany him to where he’s comfortable.
The Roadhouse proves to be exactly the kind of bar Dean loved back when Sam left... with one exception.
“Are they...”
“Ellen and Jo? Amazons. Ellen broke away from her group to actually meet someone and fall in love instead of rearing a man-killer. Her husband’s a pretty cool guy too.”
“I see.”
After a few minutes of silence, Sam admits, “Dean, I – I don’t really – “
“Yeah” he says, “Me neither.”
They laugh.
“It’s... alright, maybe I should start from the beginning.”
And Dean takes a deep breath and tells him how he met his husband.
It’s just another day in the life of Dean. Dad’s already drunk again and has called him three times in the last hour, causing his boss to give him a talk about “appropriate phone time”, Sam is still gone, and Dean has had enough.
He’s about to start screaming at the world, God, and his phone specifically when Cas walks in. He knows immediately he’s a siren. No human could have eyes that blue.
“I’m sorry, but my car appears to have stopped working...”
And that voice too? That was just unfair...
Dean caught himself just in time. Dude was a siren. Maybe he was trying to snare him in?
But when he looked at Dean, his eyes appeared completely normal. “Can you fix it?”
“Let me take a look” he said and smiled.
The siren took a double-take but then smiled back at him.
And Dean was a goner.
“I asked him to marry me right then and there.”
Sam spits his drink. “You didn’t.”
“To be fair, his attraction to me had activated his powers. It took a bit of manoeuvring until we got through that.”
“He said you aren’t affected anymore.”
“Nah. The powers he has are meant to create quick, unimportant feeling so the siren can feed off of them. What we have is the real deal. He tells me has almost forgotten what hunger feels like by now.”
“I’m happy for you, Dean” Sam says, “I truly am. It’s just... the way we were brought up... and you interacting with all these...”
“They’re friends. Some of them are even family. I mean, you could probably try to get rid of Crowley, but I wouldn’t recommend it.”
“I understand. Only... I’m trying to be tolerant. I thought I was. But the blood and the – to an outsider, it looks like you’re insane.”
“We are, just a little bit” Dean concedes, “But most who get to know us – really get to know us – learn to accept that.”
Sam nods, accepting the challenge. “What is that story with Crowley’s mother and the frogs?”
Dean grimaces. “Rowena. She’s a real witch.”
“So she’s a bad demon?”
“No, Sammy” he corrects him, chuckling, “She’s a witch.”
Sam has never been entirely sure those exist. “I see.”
“Oh you don’t. Rowena needs to be seen to be believed.”
“Alright then, I will.”
Dean looks at him. “Sam, you don’t have to. I get that – my life – I love it, but it’s weird. It’s entirely possible I’m a little crazy. But it’s normal for me, and it’s what I chose. I won’t force you to – “
“No – “ he reaches out and grabs Dean’s shoulder. “Dean. I want to get to know you and this life you’ve carved out for yourself. I imagine it hasn’t always been easy.”
Dean smirks. “You have no idea. Some of Cas’ folks... they weren’t too keen on him marrying a human. But it all worked out in the end.”
Sam can only hope it will for them, too.
Ten years later
Sam sleeps in on this Saturday; when he enters the kitchen, only his wife is sitting at the table, nursing her coffee.
“Good morning” he says, kissing Eileen, “Where are the kids?”
“Crowley took them and their cousins to Disneyland for an hour as a treat” she replies, using sign language. She normally doesn’t talk unless she’s had three cups of coffee.
He nods. “You gave him the bronze knife?”
“Yes, the djinn will have no problem with his coming-of-age ceremony now.”
Sam grins. Times have changed. When he and Dean first reconnected, he turned from “that one smartass” to “the one with the weird brother” in his firm. These days? He’s just plain “That’s how the Winchesters work, don’t ask.”
“Oh, also Drew sent an email. He wants to make his next will.”
He’s had Sam draw up ten so far. That’s what happens when you’re a phoenix and never entirely sure when you’re going to burst into flame next.
“I’ll call him later.”
Their next door neighbours stroll in, using their key.
“Hi guys” Dean greets them. “Thought I’d make breakfast for us while the rugrats are out.”
“Sounds good” Sam says.
“Everything Dean creates is good” Cas says, even though he still technically doesn’t need to eat.
“Oh, shush” Dean replies, kissing him. “Anyone up for pancakes?”
And so what if several goblins fly in through open window and out another while Dean walks over to the fridge?
Sam sits down next to his wife and relaxes.
All is well.

‘I don’t know, it seems to me that if they ain’t got you one way, they’ve got you another. So what’s the answer? That’s what I keep asking myself. What’s it all about?’ Alfie (Michael Caine) in Alfie
To declare that Michael Caine is a cinema icon is an understatement. For over six decades, he has graced our screens in a myriad of roles and has been unafraid to tackle characters that others would have not dared touch. And he has certainly not slowed down. Still seeking challenges and refusing to believe that age is a determinant for ambition, Michael Caine is very active and has stated that retirement is simply not an option.
It has been quite some years since Caine appeared in his breakout role in Alfie (1966) but it is easy to see why it made him a star. As the Cockney Lothario who charms his way through a bevy of women, Caine found himself a major star upon the film’s release. Caine himself stated that he never imagined Alfie would be anything other than a British film for British audiences that would do modest business. But this started to change during filming, with Caine pointing that despite initial doubts, mainly about himself, the feeling soon developed that ‘maybe we got something here’. For Caine, his realisation that they ‘might be on a winner’ was when he heard the laughter from those watching the rushes.
Quite a number of reviewers and critics have stated that Alfie is a timeless classic, and this reviewer certainly agrees. It is more than the story of a self-centred Cockney charmer who leads a hedonistic and selfish lifestyle. It is also more than a walk-through London in the Swinging Sixties. Alfie poses questions and challenges for audiences to ponder – today as much as it did in the 1960s.
Despite its’ reputation, Alfie is not a film which celebrates hedonism or sexual exploitation; nor does it set the main character up as a hero to be worshipped. On the surface, Alfie is a character who uses his charm, charisma and good looks to seduce women and use them in every way he can for his own pleasures. They cook his food, wash his clothes and of course provide him with plenty of sex. And certainly, there was something enticing about the character’s swinging lifestyle, humour and intriguing nature that made the film a hit. As biographer William Hall has noted’, ‘Women adored the hooded gaze, the slightly mocking approach, the deadpan throwaway lines. Men in their turn had a sneaking admiration for the self-made cavalier, raunchy, honest to a fault with himself, unashamed of his own rough edges and totally his own master’.
Tumblr media
Yet despite this, Alfie’s character arc shows a man who does not have it all. A feminist critique could offer plenty in terms of the male gaze of back-slapping admiration of a man bedding many women, fitting the sexual fantasy of partners-a-plenty. But the film questions whether this is admirable. Indeed, Alfie is a condemnation of that very sentiment, with Michael Caine himself describing Alfie as a ‘no-good layabout’ and a despicable individual.
What makes Alfie work is its’ incredible authenticity, which gives the film its’ lasting strength. There’s no pretence to Alfie and the brutal honesty of the character removes any possibility of superficiality. This is achieved from the very opening scene of the film, when we are introduced to the main character by Alfie himself. Breaking the fourth wall, Alfie narrates in real time and tells his story as it happens, complete with his deepest insights, observations and philosophical interpretation. Alfie’s intimacy with the audience is a fundamental factor in the film’s magic – he speaks to us as individuals rather than a whole group or crowd. It’s highly personal, intensely intimate and thus honest (at least to a point). The audience becomes Alfie’s ‘confessor’ and at times it feels like we become his ‘best mate’. Yet Alfie could just as well be speaking to a mirror of himself, seeking to justify his thoughts, feelings and actions, and therefore bouncing his thoughts around to try and gain some perspective.
youtube
Alfie’s philosophy of life and his ideas on women become obvious immediately. The audience first discovers that Alfie is having an affair with a married woman named Siddie (Millicent Martin) whom he objectifies by calling her ‘it’, which is perhaps one of the most offensive aspects of his behaviour. Yet his objectification of women is also Alfie’s armour against intimacy and deeper emotion. After dropping Siddie off at a train station, he goes to see Gilda (Julia Foster) who is deeply in love with Alfie and very much in need of more than what he gives her. She pushes away a kind and gentle bus conductor named Humphrey (Graham Stark) who loves her as a result. Like all the other women he uses, Gilda is also objectified and treated miserably. But Alfie simply states that a woman can be quite happy ‘if she knows her place’.
Yet Alfie’s relationship with Gilda is about to change when he discovers that she is pregnant. It is an unwanted complication to his easy-going life, and he makes this clear as he gives the audience a run-down of the many women he is regularly seeing and having sex with whilst also seeing Gilda. He tries to break it off as well as convince Gilda to give the child away but to her credit she wants to keep the child. The eventual birth of a baby boy sees something happen in Alfie, which he admits has broken through his armour and will haunt him throughout the film. He becomes attached to the boy named Malcolm, even though he still objectifies Malcolm’s mother. Alfie explains that any ‘bird’ can be replaced but a child is special and individual. Yet he is not beyond disowning Malcolm as ‘my sister’s (child)’ when picking up a woman in the park.
youtube
His attachment to Malcolm will also not prevent him walking out on Gilda and his son, when the challenge to the status quo arises. Humphrey has been calling on Gilda and declares he loves both her and the boy. It becomes a line in the sand which Alfie refuses to cross and reveals Alfie’s despicable nature when he says to Gilda, ‘I don’t know what love is the way you birds go on about it’. Neither does he care about or want Gilda’s respect, to which Alfie declares ‘I don’t want no bird’s respect, I wouldn’t know what to do with it’. For Alfie a woman is present to serve his base needs and nothing else. It’s a terrible indictment of the emptiness and emotional void underneath Alfie’s charm and charisma. Alfie’s abandoning Gilda, however, will not ease his problems and his peace of mind will not be eased either.
A moment of vulnerability highlights the fragility of Alfie’s sense of self when he discovers he has tuberculosis and has a mental collapse. The scene in which he discovers he is sick is also underscored by his leaving Gilda and her refusal to take him back but more so by losing the relationship with his son, Malcolm. The lead-up to discovering he has ‘shadows on his lungs’ is brilliant and the interplay between the doctor (Eleanor Bron) and Alfie is an incredible and masterful display of dialogue from Caine. It is a combination of humour and tragedy in the best traditions of Greek drama and certainly highlights the absurd parallels of both running alongside each other.
While convalescing though, Alfie pulls himself back together and returns to form in his seducing of his nurse Carla (Shirley Anne Field) much to the horror of his fellow patient Harry (Alfie Bass) and his wife Lily (Vivien Merchant). Alfie tries to impart his cynical philosophy on Harry via a cruel hypothetical scenario of Harry dying and his wife and kids forgetting him. Naturally, Harry becomes deeply upset and his usual kind and humble demeanour breaks into a violent attack on Alfie, which is quickly subdued due to his illness. It is a poignant moment which highlights the damage that Alfie along the way:
youtube
Perhaps the most appalling act Alfie carries out is the seduction of Harry’s sheltered and loving wife, Lily. Taking advantage of her loneliness and vulnerability, Alfie exploits her and adds that ‘it will round off the tea nicely’. His unthinking cruelty is also revealed in his blunt assessment of Lily’s sexual experience (or lack thereof) after he seduces her. Lily woundedly replies that she has never been with anyone but Harry, her husband and the audience cannot help but feel dismal towards Alfie.
youtube
Alfie certainly is a predator, using his guile as well as his charm to entice women into his world. Whilst some of his partners are willing and seeking a good time, others are exploited in their vulnerability like Lily, as well as a young girl from up north named Annie (Jane Asher) whom he picks up at a truck stop. Assessing that she is running away from a failed relationship back home, Alfie uses his wiles to manipulate Annie and she ends up not only as a domestic servant but a sexual object for his satisfaction. Reading her diary and picking up her sadness from the songs she listens to, Alfie states that ‘it punishes itself’ by washing, cooking and cleaning’ (and giving her body for sex) which Alfie happily obliges to his advantage.
Tumblr media
But again, Alfie’s vulnerability will be tested when he also begins a relationship with an older American woman named Ruby (Shelley Winters) whom he seems to respect because ‘she knows what she wants and she’s gonna get it’. Despite claiming he could easily settle down with Ruby, he still objectifies her, repeating ‘she’s in beautiful condition’, as if she’s a car with a great chassis and a good motor running.
youtube
Yet the most controversial moment of the film (in the context of the 1960s) is the abortion scene where Lily comes to Alfie’s flat, pregnant and ready to meet a pre-arranged abortionist (Denholm Elliott). Even at this point, he accepts no responsibility and calls her a ‘fallen woman’ and that he is just ‘trying to help a friend’. Alfie makes the honest assessment, though deflecting it as being male, that like ‘all men’ he only wants the pleasure and no part of the pain. Yet when Alfie sees the aborted foetus, the mask drops and he breaks down in tears, fleeing his flat. Distraught, he realises the enormity of what has happened to the one friend that the audience sees he has, admitting his selfishness: “I was crying for my bleeding self”. Again, it’s hard evidence that Alfie damages those he is involved with.
youtube
The trauma of the abortion, combined with Annie finally leaving him after he drives her away, finds Alfie driven to seeking deeper meaning in his life and he decides to ask Ruby to marry him. Yet for once, Alfie will be the one used and deeply wounded. The one woman Alfie claims to respect and love is also in bed with another man when he arrives to see her. Ruby tells Alfie that he’s too old – a cruel rejection which Alfie can do nothing about. It is the turning point of the film which leaves Alfie reaping what he has sown, in a twist of dramatic irony that is all too obvious to him as well as the audience.
youtube
The final scene sees him standing near when where the audience saw him at the start. Incidentally, he sees Siddie but she has no interest in him, seemingly after he has let her down. It is a strong revelation that change has occurred for all the characters and those that have crossed paths with Alfie end up the worse for it. Though scarred by him, they becomes emboldened to do something about their lives – while Alfie remains trapped in his limited world. Gilda discovers her self-respect and finds happiness with Humphrey. From her awful pain grows a demand for respect in their relationship and the realisation that he deserves more than what Alfie is offering. Annie eventually leaves with a quiet dignity well beyond her years. Harry is cuckolded and Lily forced to have an abortion. Even Siddie loses respect for him and decides to invest her time and emotions into her husband.
Indeed, there are many others that Alfie has let down and the audience witnesses their feelings towards him. The waitress at the truck stop seems to be pleased that he may get into trouble after being stood up. The driver he steals Annie from eventually physically attacks Alfie. Gilda certainly loses respect for him and its’ doubtful if Annie ever respected him. Two acquaintances are able to easily exploit his fragile ego, which do not suggest friendship of any sort. Even the crowd that cheer him at the truck stop, are cheering his sexual exploits but is this something that suggest an honourable man? Ultimately, Alfie is a man without honour, whose words and actions reflect a selfish, self-centred and irresponsible man without any concern for the impacts of his actions on others.
Worse still, Alfie is ultimately a lonely man trying to fill a void which has been consciously or inadvertently created by himself. He seems to have only one friend, who is also a Cockney con-artist. At the end of the film, the void is worse than ever and Alfie is left alone and despondent, a victim of his own personal philosophy on life. It is not a case of ‘karma’ finally getting him but that Alfie’s own choices have led him to this point. There is no fulfilment in his life and Alfie makes the point that one would think he’s had the best of it and come out in front because he has taken so much from others and given little or nothing in return. Yet, he does not have peace of mind. And his final question ‘what’s it all about?’, muttered by Alfie as he pets a lonely stray dog, may suggest that perhaps he has learned something and could transform himself, after all.
Alfie is a film which succeeds because it’s an incredibly well-crafted film and deceptively so. Director and producer Lewis Gilbert crafts a story where we alternate between liking a loveable rogue yet seeing a cad at the same time. The dialogue is tight and natural, driving the story along without pretension. The supporting cast is incredibly strong and even though the likes of Shelley Winters and Denholm Elliott play small roles, they are crucial ones and their impact is central to the story. Caine in his autobiography believes that Elliot acted him off the screen and gave high praise to the now deceased actor.
The outstanding score was provided by jazz legend Sonny Rollins and Caine would also state that he became a jazz fan as a result. Rollins’ depth and sensitivity underscores key moments in the film, which give the story a deeper impact. And of course, the title track written by Burt Bacharach, would be sung by Cilla Black to promote the film in England and by Cher for the U.S release. Personally, I am not a huge fan of Cher but she delivers a knock-out performance.
But ultimately, the film belongs to Michael Caine and his turn as Alfie is an incredible feat of acting. There is such impressive balance in his performance that the audience is torn between loving Alfie and wanting to knock his block off. The delivery of the dialogue is done with amazing precision, finesse and talent, and with such natural feeling. Caine has to work between the action on the screen and the personal asides to the camera, which he achieves with amazing fluidity, allowing the audience to slip in between effortlessly. It is an incredibly far more demanding role than what it may seem and Caine delivers such a natural performance that it is easy to forget this. As a result, it is the perfect evidence of a strong actor who can draw us into the journey.  Caine would be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, which he would not win. Yet his turn as Alfie is an Oscar-winning performance and it should go down as ‘one that got away’.
Alfie is a far more layered film than it may initially appear, and whilst often humorous, it does challenge the nature of human selfishness and individual desire, hedonism and the concept of what happiness truly means. Ultimately, we are all challenged to contemplate our own roles in our personal relationships and life journey. Like Alfie, we find ourselves reflecting on our lives and asking ‘what it’s all about’?

Mark Lanegan Somebody's Knocking 2LP 2019
Heavenly Recordings are thrilled to announce Somebody’s Knocking, the new 14–track album from Mark Lanegan Band, released 18th October and available to preorder here. To celebrate the release Lanegan has shared a hilarious video for first single “Stitch It Up” in which he also stars. Of the video Lanegan says: “I had a blast making this video. We had some friends over for dinner and Joe Cardamone met Donal Logue there and they hit it off. When I later talked to Joe about directing a vid he immediately said “Jimmy The Cab Driver” I called Donal and he laughed for like ten minutes and was totally into it. My head was pounding from laughing so hard the day of the shoot. It was extremely tough to keep a straight face when Donal was in character, he turned into an updated version of Jimmy so fast. Both Joe and Donal are brilliant. There’s a reason it’s the first video of mine I’ve been in for the last 15 years.”
From the opening bars of Disbelief Suspension onwards, it’s clear that Somebody’s Knocking is an album made by someone deeply obsessed with how music – with all its primal, spiritual healing power – truly penetrates the soul. As a result, there’s joy in the music, as if created from a perfect set of inspirations smashed and grabbed from God’s own record shop. Some of the influences are oblique, others direct and fully respectful. From the Raw Power-esque garage metal grind of that opener to Letter Never Sent’s rocket-powered take on Love-era kaleidoscope-psych, through the pensive subterranean murk of Dark Disco Jag and on to Playing Nero’s sun-bleached riff on Joy Division’s Atmosphere, there’s the glee of infatuation running deep in the tracks. And, in some ways, that display of infatuation serves to change the very perception of Lanegan the artist – this album being less the tale of a brooding, crepuscular rock’n’roll veteran and more that of someone consumed by a lifelong love of words and sound fused together.
With that perception shift in mind, one of the most remarkable moments on Somebody’s Knocking is Penthouse High – a track that positively blooms, sounding like a love letter to imperial phase New Order. For Lanegan, it signals a return to one of his formative musical loves from a time even before he joined Screaming Trees.
“I’ve always been into electronic music since I was a kid,” he says. “I think the reason those elements have become more obvious in my music is that my tastes have changed as I’ve grown older. The bulk of what I listen to now is electronic. Alain Johannes and I had actually written Penthouse High for Gargoyle (the 2017 album the Guardian stated saw “Lanegan in the form of his career”) but then it didn’t really fit on that record. I have been a huge fan of New Order and Depeche Mode forever and have wanted to do a song along those lines for a long time – a blatantly catchy, old-school dance-type song.”
Although Somebody’s Knocking came together in an 11 day session in L.A. (Lanegan’s hometown of the last 22 years), many of the deepest musical influences on the record are European – be they the aforementioned electronic artists or newer, murkier forms provided by writing partners Martin Jenkins (who records as Pye Corner Audio) or Rob Marshall – a collaborator on Gargoyle and on his own, forthcoming debut album as Humanist. In each case, Lanegan approached working with each of the writers from the perspective of a fan.
Lyrically, Somebody’s Knocking sets the listener off down multiple rabbit holes, painting deeply psychedelic pictures where someone’s “drip, drip, dripping acid out of the dropper” (Disbelief Suspension) or where “the hounds are behind me/footsteps following/you know you can’t find me/I’m miles from the crime scene” on the monumentally addictive Stitch It Up.
While on the whole, interpretations are left for the listener to decide on, there are aspects of the real world that can’t help but seep subconsciously into Lanegan’s songs: “It seems to me that the entire world is in a weird, precarious place right now. I try to not be someone in a constant state of worry and alarm but watching the massive divide that is taking place and the political situations, especially in the US and UK makes me think, “what the f*** are these idiots thinking?” The hatred, racism and all this other fear-driven shit, these “adults” that continually drive the machine that perpetuates this ignorance to their own ends should all be in prison cells instead of the non-violent drug “offenders” in them now. I can’t specifically say how any of this effects my writing but I know that most of the things that occupy my thoughts have a way of coming back out in a song.”
At the end of the day though, Somebody’s Knocking doesn’t need to be either commentary or allegory. Like Lanegan’s best work, it tells its own stories and weaves its own wonders, conjuring up feverish hallucinogenic visions to sit atop roughly hewn rock and glassy, brilliant bright electronics. And then it leaves them to penetrate their own ways right down to our deepest, darkest roots.
The Mark Lanegan album is part of the 6th Annual Ten Bands One Cause. Ten titles will be pressed on pink vinyl and released from 9/27 all the way through 10/25 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This will again benefit Gilda's Club NYC (www.gildasclubnyc.org).

Visitation
More Harvey Dent and OC nonsense featuring my trash-fire of a character, Jacky Ripley. This is still set prior to any villain shenanigans on Harvey’s part, but only just. Jacky tries to sneak into the hospital to see him after the attack, but things go...wrong.
No real warnings, but a content check that an unstable character does refer to herself in less than great mental health terms.
---
It was late. It was raining—as usual. And she was making stupid choices on purpose.
The hospital looked like something out of a nightmare. Stark, backlit with a glowing fluorescent from the ER  driveway. Jacky was soaked through her jeans and sweater. Her hair was plastered to her face even with the hoodie up.
Cop cars littered the parking lot, lights flaring without sirens making it look like even more surreal.
Jacky couldn’t feel her feet, couldn’t feel her legs. Didn’t really notice as she approached the building. She couldn’t go inside. That clarity kept her grounded in only mild stupidity instead of outright suicidal idiocy. Scaling a building at 1am in the rain was not her favorite task, but she had done it countless times before for work.
She’d have to mount the ledges and sidle along the entire circumference.
She couldn’t ask which room he was in.
Miri told her she shouldn’t go. Couldn’t go.
Gilda had left ten messages on her phone since last week.
Jacky, I know I can’t ask…
Jacky, he would want….
Jacky, please answer….
Jacky rushed over to the bushes to vomit. Hands and knees, stomach cramping so hard and so sudden her back arched in pain. Her throat burned, her eyes watered. It tasted like the bottle of whiskey she had downed in earnest. Funny, she didn’t feel drunk. She felt more sober than she had in her entire life.
Climbing the hospital felt even more impossible now with her limbs shaking every which way. She could barely see through the rain. Just as she was psyching herself up to make the first jump even thought she’d probably miss, fall, and break even bone in her stupid body; she was hoisted off the ground by one leg. With a grunt that gave way to a dull scream, Jacky went flying upwards through the rain, shooting straight up to the roof. She bobbed precariously over the edge of the building, headfirst. Her first thought was this was certainly odd, the second was that if she died right now it would be quick.
“I’m surprised it took this long for Moroni to send someone to finish the job,” a grating voice growled at her in the darkness.
“I...who…?” she couldn’t see through the rain and shadow, and being held upside down certainly did not help. “I don’t work for Moroni.”
Something pushed her, causing her to spin round, facing the skylights. “Falcone then.” A shadow moved past the lights, and the voice spoke with authority. Whoever it was it knew her old boss. Age-old reflex made her anxious until Jacky remembered everyone in Gotham knew her boss now, and knew exactly who she really was. Three months out of prison was not long enough for people to forget the Ripper case.
But whoever this was, was no cop.
Jacky had an inkling. It did not comfort her.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
“The string of dismemberments at Flannigan’s begs to differ.”
How did he know about that? No one should know about that for the next five hours by her own calculations. She kept her mouth shut. He had no proof. Moroni’s men deserved it. She’d killed her career and put a price on her head in the same stroke, and she’d do it again. Jacky felt wild in a way she knew wasn’t the whiskey. She kept the crazy all shut in, but tonight it just had to come out. She’d made it hurt. She’d done it special; crazy only came out when Falcone wanted a message sent. This one was the first time she’d done a message all of her own.
“I wanted to see Harvey.” Crazy went right back into its box as she heard his name out of her own mouth, desperate, raspy, pathetic.
“Why?” The Batman jerked on the line keeping her suspended.
Because if she hadn’t told Harvey to stay away from her after her release from Blackgate she’d have known how in deep he was in going after Moroni. Because if she hadn’t bought into Harvey convincing her she still had a chance, that she could be a better woman, she wouldn’t have stopped working for Falcone and she could have heard about the hit. Because if she hadn’t lied in the first place she’d be a normal woman inside the hospital taking care of her friend. Because if she just had minded her own business the first day that stupid man had come into her shop she wouldn’t be here right now….
“I just wanna know how he is.”
“That line might have worked on the nurses, it won’t on me.”
“It’s the only line I got.”
Jacky was exhausted. She swung out and back from the roof to the abyss, her head going numb from being upside down so long. That was it then. Her grand plan to sneak into Harvey’s room, no muss no fuss, and back out was a bust. Batman didn’t make a move to haul in the line. She was sure he was going to drop her off in one of the cop cars below and tell the others to arrest her on trespassing, and hell, why not add murder to the list of offenses. No sense in being coy now.
“Is he dying?” Saying the fear out loud made her stomach cramp up again.
Silence from the Batman. He still thought she worked for Falcone. He still thought this was some play for ulterior information. He wasn’t going to believe her and he was right! He shouldn’t. She’d spent so much time lying and playing innocent shop girl no one should believe her ever again. And here was a fitting punishment. For the first time Jacky struggled on the line. The drop of crazy made her dizzy. It was only to be used for Miri’s sake, for the family, for money when she could make it work for them. “If he’s dying I just wanted to see him before...you don’t have to trust me. You can arrest me. I just need to know. Tell me...TELL ME, OR I’LL…”
“Or you’ll do what, Jacqueline?”
The sound of her full name gave her pause. Batman finally lowered her to the roof, cutting the cable and letting her fall in a shivering heap. She pulled herself to her feet, balling her cold hands into fists. “I’ll make it hurt.” Now that, assuredly, was the whiskey talking.
But it was going to hurt. She hoped it did. She deserved it.
Jacky winced when, instead of a punch, a hand descended on her shoulder. The strength of the grip was frightening. It rooted her in place, but offered no violence. “He’s not dying, Jacquline.”
“Oh, that’s good,” was all she managed before she burst into tears.
The hand on her shoulder was all that prevented her from giving way and sinking to the floor. Harvey wasn’t going to die. Things could still be okay. She’d be going back to Blackgate, but that was where she belonged anyway, no point in running from it. She could write to him in prison, but she wouldn’t. Because she was a coward in her core.
“S-sorry. Thank you. You can arrest me now,” she sniffed, straightening, looking up directly into the masked eyes of the Batman.
“Come with me.”
The hand never moved from her shoulder as she was shoved along. Batman booted open the roof access hatch and forced her down into the stairwell. Everything echoed inside. The rain falling off her clothes, her skin, plinking onto the metal stairs. The thick boots the Batman was wearing in lock step with her own, softer, sneakered tred. And he never said another word, just marched her down flight after flight. Around and around.
Back to prison. Miri would be so upset. She had forgiven her once, Jacky doubted she would a second time. She had tried to be a good sister, the little double act she had between their shared bakery and her night errands for Falcone had only been for her sake. But this city beat most people down eventually and Jacky knew at some point the killing hadn’t really ever been just a paycheck had it?
At least Gotham hadn’t claimed Harvey. It had tried. He’d still show them. That was enough to live with. She hoped Gilda would be alright. Maybe she could sneak one quick phone call to at least tell her how sorry she was she had stayed away. The DA and his wife shouldn’t be seen in the company of a convicted killer. She had just been trying to help. She’d only ever just wanted to help.
The white light of the hospital blinded Jacky for a moment, but Batman kept her moving. Nurses and doctors parted in quiet shock as they made their way through. No one was going to argue with the Batman, especially not when he was holding a perp. The brand of killers he brought in were on another level far beyond her. Maybe she should feel flattered. Mostly she just felt tired.
They stopped at a door, that grip tightening to levels that made Jacky grind her teeth. “If you try to make a break for the window,” he growled. “You’ll be caught before you hit the ground.”
“What?”
He opened the door, shoving her inside, releasing her. She could feel him still in the darkened room. This was not an arrest. There were no cops in here. Just the steady beep of a heart monitor and…
“Harvey?”
For a man who always made life feel so much larger than it actually was it was so much harder to see him lying in the small hospital bed than Jacky had anticipated. She waited for some trick from the Batman, turning back to face him. He only stood in the shadows, watching. She allowed herself to move towards the bed.
Gauze and mesh covered the left half of his face, his neck, and his arm. She knew the extent of the attack from the news. There would be scars. And that was the best news ever, because scars meant he’d be alive.
She jumped when he shifted on the bed. Jacky hadn’t counted on him being awake. She didn’t want him to see her! She backed up into the dark. “Jacky?”
His voice was not his own. Maybe the acid had damaged his vocal chords.
Caught, she stood in limbo between the bedside and the door. “Hey.”
“How did...you get...in?”
“Light breaking and entering. I...I didn’t mean to disturb you. I know I shouldn’t have come, but…” If she cried again, warning or no warning, she was going to throw herself out that window.
“Shut up,” he snapped, grabbing her hand. “I’m glad to...see...you.”
“Yeah,” she nodded. “I don’t think I can stay long, my escort won’t let me,” she gestured back to the moving shadows behind her. “But you’re gonna heal up fine.” This was the part where she was supposed to say she was grateful he wasn’t dying, or dead. Where she said because he was the most important friend in her life and losing him was unfathomable. But she didn’t.
“Doctors...won’t let me see. It’s...not good...is it?”
“Think how intimidating you’re gonna look in court. You’ll win by default.”
A gurgling, raspy, laugh was her only reward. “Think you can...stay?” His hand gripped her tighter and Jacky almost wanted to tear herself in half.
“Don’t think my escort is gonna let me, Harv. I...I did something bad tonight. I’ll probably be back in Blackgate by the time you get out of here. And I’m sorry. I let you down.” She could feel him staring at her. His one good eye, searching hers, that grip pulling her closer.
“What did you do?”
The grip on her hand turned into a claw, nails digging into flesh so hard it hurt. He didn’t sound angry, and she didn’t stop him. “Got some of Moroni’s guys. It was worse than what you brought me up for. I’m sorry, Harvey, but they deserved it. I only wanted—”
“Payback.”
The pain medication was what made him sound so cold. Just the drugs making him a little confused.  Even in the dark she could see the outline of a smile that was and was not his.
“Jacky, we always knew...there was a reason...we liked you.”
