i keep thinking about digital ghosts. or maybe digital hauntings would be a better term. the final messages shared between you and someone you no longer speak to, for whatever reason. a webpage, or blog post, or inactive profile on a social media forum that you still return to sometimes, no longer even hoping for something to have changed, just to remember, like returning to a grave year after year. video and audio recordings of people who've left your life that you play back over and over until the tape wears out. in the realm of the more fantastical, maybe a hologram that bears their likeness but only a pale, shallow imitation of their complexity, their personality, or an AI or other imperfect replica built on a lifetime of data collected from them that only reinforces their absence but is all you have left to remember (or replace until you forget the difference) them by. all these records that they existed that will inevitably only last as long as the technology that supports them takes to become obsolete, or the data corrupts and begins to break down, or the archives storing it are no longer hosted anywhere. you haven't cheated death, or the grief that comes with losing someone. you've just prolonged it.

It recently occurred to me that one of my fave feel good/comfort movies, Big Eden, could be included as part of C6D because it stars Eric Schweig who was in the due South pilot.

Big Eden is a sweet film about a gay man who returns to his small hometown in Montana to take care of his ill grandfather, and pretty much the whole town then proceeds to play matchmaker between him and the local general store owner, Pike (Eric Schweig).

This film means a lot to me as Native/Indigenous representation is hard to come by, and queer Native/Indigenous rep even more so. I highly recommend it to any dS/C6D fans, and anyone in general, who wants to watch a lovely queer romance.

the progression from "there's a morning snack and a midday snack" and "20 bucks for pizza" buck looking after his friend's kid to "bobby's famous lasagne: 6 types of cheese cooked to perfection" buck cooking for his family to "that's makes me your sous chef" teaching his kid how to cook is making me go so feral.

#going from two separate things - like how normal friends who aren't co-parenting would organised it - to the most domestic thing ever #to being the good responsible parent and making sure he eats real food before cookies #AND and the motifs that've been established: teaching to cook as father/son bonding and cooking food as a demonstration of love #im UNWELLLLL #buckley diaz family #911 abc #right from the pilot buck has had an intense care for children (but was also immature himself)#and we've seen him grow into a person who is literally becoming a father. people talk about how they could have so easily made troy and abed the typical nerd x jock relationship dynamic friend duo and they didn’t, which made it better. which is all true but I think we forget that they didn’t start with really any dynamic in mind for them at all. troy and abed weren’t even originally supposed to be especially close. they built the characters, seperately, then as the show came together they realized how much chemistry the two had (troy and abed AND danny and donald.) their dynamic wrote itself, with almost no pretense or planning, and that’s what makes it so special and unique. that’s why there’s not really any other duo quite like them in any other sitcom, or even any other show/movie. it’s a really strange realization but some of the best things we create are completely unplanned

#originally troy and pierce were supposed to be the ‘unlikely friends’ duo of the group #like a beavis and butthead type duo #and you can see early efforts to make this happen in the pilot #but then in spanish 101 (episode 1x02) they realized how good danny and donald (and subsequently troy and abed) were together #so they took that and ran with it #they talk about all this in the dvd commentaries etc but yeah #I’m so glad they weren’t too rigid in their plans for the characters #because troy and abed really are a big part of what makes community so special #anyway #community #nbc community #community nbc #abed nadir #troy barnes #trobed #troy and abed
