Are lycras actually canon?

Everybody calls characters like Pink Guy, Salamander Man, Red Dick, etc lycras. But why do people call them that? What is the source of the name? That's what I'm gonna be discussing today, I guess.

The main source of all this seems to be the Filthy Frank Wiki, and I have already stated in a previous post that the wiki is a bit shit. The wiki often tends to have fan theories and joke stuff passed down as true, unfinished articles, most articles completely ignore the lore from the book, and overall a lot of stuff that's not canon. This is what the article for the Lycra people says

I don't know about you, but I don't remember any videos that mentioned a Chinpocalypse or how if you don't feed your Lycras enough Chin chin branded chromosomes their skin will fall off and they will freeze to death (But the idea of Chin chin branded chromosomes is pretty funny. I have to give that to whoever wrote that it's like he's a cereal mascot.) I especially don't remember all that in the book, which is supposed to explain the lore of Filthy Frank.

So Lycras are mostly likely not canon. I say most likely because of how prevalent it is. Every single supposed Lycra character's article mentions how they were turned into Lycras by Chin Chin, and everybody in the community calls them Lycras. It's so prevalent that it had to come from somewhere. No way some random guy just made the article for Lycra people and everybody just ran with it. It had to originate from somewhere. Maybe Joji made a post on facebook or twitter about Lycras. Even if he did Lycras are probably not canon anymore. I would appreciate it if somebody would find the origins of all this, unless some random guy did make the Lycra article on a whim and everybody just ran with it.

By the way, I don't want to discourage anyone from calling them Lycras. Y'all can keep calling them that since I will too. It's a good group name, especially since you can't really call them much else if you want people to know what you're talking about when you're talking about that group of characters. Just keep in mind that the name is not actually canon.

My Top 6 Films of 2023

Just some recommendations for my favourite new releases of last year!

2023 had a few knock-out hits as far as the cinema goes — obviously, people were very excited about the respective releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer, but my top films of the year were a bit different.

One thing I do think unites a lot of these — and a trend I hope to see from more films in the next few years — is a trend toward more earnestness and sincerity in scripts and plot lines, and I’m hoping that trend continues!

Without further ado, my top films of 2023:

They Cloned Tyrone (dir. Juel Taylor)

They Cloned Tyrone is a fucking triumph, and hands-down had my favourite costume design of the year — it at the same time feels very vintage in places, calling heavily on the Blaxploitation movies of the 1970s and their aesthetics while at the same time dragging in more modern— and dystopian — futuristic elements throughout. Teyonah Parris is a particular triumph as Yo-Yo, but the whole cast really rocks this whole flick.

This film feels in so many ways like a fever dream, layering disparate elements and tones, and for that is all the more hard-hitting with the horror and painful realism of its cynical central plot.

If you watch a single of the films recommended on this list, make it this one.

Down Low (dir. Rightor Doyle)

This film is weird as fuck, and it makes a lot out of leaning into that. Delving into the ugly reality of down-low hook-ups on gay dating apps and dialing the chaos that can arise from them up to the max, this is a surprisingly heartfelt look at gay loneliness and isolation in the white middle-class US.

It’s fast-paced and kooky with its dialogue — Lukas Gage, of Euphoria fame, co-wrote the script with Phoebe Fisher, and Gage’s particular style of verbose and down-right weird speeches are dotted through it — and while it ultimately ends in the death you know from the beginning is coming, it doesn’t feel like it’s wholly a tragedy.

Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023, dir. John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein)

I don’t think I need to go into great detail about this one — Dungeons and Dragons’ newest addition to its array of canons here is a spellbinding and delightful watch. A lot of the problem with fantasy films and TV shows the past few years has been how painfully over-ironic they are, with none of them being able to just lean into their premise and accept that, yes, we’re being a bit silly, and that’s the point! But the DnD movie is just spectacularly earnest and gives itself entirely over to the wonder of its world, and that feels wonderful.

Every time I’ve watched it, which is a few times now, I’ve picked up on new fun world details or little in-jokes, and there are just so many things this film does right and has fun with, most of all making Xenk Yendar even more autistic than ever whilst also making him hot with the Regé-Jean Page casting.

And also, Hugh Grant is here playing a horrible, sleazy bastard of a wizard, and speaking of hot —

Cocaine Bear (dir. Elizabeth Banks)

Must a film be good?

Firstly, isn’t a coked-up horny female bear wreaking havoc and ripping people to shreds enough? And also, even if it wasn’t enough, aren’t so many queer characters going through the weirdest day out ever, girlbosses galore (I’m including the bear), funny as Hell dialogue, and even plot twists enough?

We saw this in the cinema on its release, and it was utterly glorious. Everyone should have the pleasure of seeing the feminist icon of 2023, the cocaine bear (sorry, Barbie), on the biggest screen imaginable, ripping into some hapless gay with full surround sound.

The Boogeyman (dir. Rob Savage)

I normally run along to see any new releases from Rob Savage as I loved Host, and The Boogeyman was so much more than I expected — bearing no resemblance at all to the original lacklustre Stephen King short story, this film really plays so creatively with light and shadow and has an honestly spine-tingling monster design that feels viscerally frightening from its introduction to its final boss battle.

I love it when a film plays with light sources, most of all when good horror does it, and this flick really delivers on that point — not knowing where light is going to come from adds extra tension when you’re trying to see into the shadowy corners, and whether it’s from the lunar nightlight, the videogame flashes, the camera, the fridge, or anywhere else, this film really has this holistic approach to light and shadow that just fucks.

The Pope’s Exorcist (dir. Julius Avery)

Again, must a film be good?

Isn’t it enough to have a coked-up bear —

Okay, I used that line already, but this time it’s Russell Crowe, and he’s doing an Italian accent, and he’s riding a little Vespa, and it’s the funniest and best thing in the world.

Much like the DnD movie, The Pope’s Exorcist really leans into its premise and just goes really earnest about it — it doesn’t take too much time to sardonically comment on the ridiculousness of its own universe, and that makes it feel really fresh compared to a lot of other big studio horror films. It’s silly and stupid and mixes more impressive scares in with the cheap ones, and it’s just a really fun movie to watch with friends.

jimmy is just like. that guy for me. i could probably go on an hours long tirade about him, his films, his characters, his relationships, his military experience, his ptsd, his politics, etc. without interruption. right now i'm specifically thinking of his relationship with henry fonda (who deserves his own honorable mention) which OH MY GOD is one of the best hollywood friendships to date. orson welles said they were either having the hottest affair in hollywood or were the straightest men alive. he realized they were the latter... anyways that leads me into:

old/classic hollywood + its underground queer scene and the hays code.

first of all just old hollywood in general i can go hours and hours about because i just love so many of the actors and actresses. leslie howard and gregory peck are other honorable mentions in that category. however, the queer folks will always be my favorite <3 people like farley granger and marlene dietrich come to mind as well as cary grant and his biwife energy. but just all of the queer undertones from then i just appreciate so, so much. also the HAYS CODE... when i get you... i've seen so many pre-code movies which are just incredible and whenever they put that damn code in place everything got boring... unless they fixed the subtext so then you have films like rope (1948) which is such a good gay film like wtf?? old hollywood is a gem and if you avoid black + white movies or just older movies in general you SUCK!!

franklin expedition.

i've written academic essays about this damn expedition and i had no sources at all. just my mind and a dream. for two years my only thoughts for a future career was becoming a franklin expedition researcher who worked in the arctic. of course that's not gonna work?? okay but these dumb mfers were some of my favorite people on this earth like COMMANDER JAMES FITZJAMES was a real person who walked this earth and i never even got close to touching him. this is sickening. captain francis crozier is ALIVE and WELL on king william island you just cannot see him. i think i will genuinely throw up if they ever find crozier's captain log on the hms terror. the desolation and sickness is just like. eye clawingly scary and i could never fathom what truly went down on that island. i feel so so bad for the cold boys and i love them so, so much.

here’s where i start geekin about shit. FALLOUT IS SO FUCKING GOOD I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. 3, 4 and new vegas are top tier games (yes nostalgia is clouding my head but idc) i also love 1 and 2 but genuinely cannot play a turn based game like that. okay but the entire plot of new vegas is such a top tier storyline and it’s just such a fun silly game and is like made perfectly for gay trans autistic people i love it. 4 is just The Game you play it doesn’t matter you just end up there and it’s always fun idc what the haters say PRESTON GARVEY MINUTEMEN #1!!! 3 is there. Myles “My” Vasa Cohen was born in Huston, Texas to Nuanua Vaai and Skylar Cohen a pilot and doula respectively. He has two siblings, a brother and a sister who he grew up with. Their father was often away for work but when he was back he’d always bring them gifts and sweets from the places he’d been. 

At age around 7 he was diagnosed with Dyslexia and Asperger’s, which a lot of his teachers took to mean he would not excel at school. They couldn’t be more wrong, a good student, Myles’ grades were steadily good and very quickly he knew he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up. He came out as trans when he was 15, then as gay when he was 18, and to his relief both of his parents were nothing but supportive.

Apart from his future goals of being a doctor, Myles had and still has a keen interest in Norse Mythology and Pokemon, though he often doesn’t admit it he has a large collection of the cards, some of which he brought with him on the ill-fated flight to Australia. He continued to succeed in school and once he did pre-med he attended the UCSF School of Medicine, where after a few dead-end relationships he met his partner.

The two settled down in a townhouse in San Francisco with their 3 rescue cats (“his babies”): Donnie, Joey and Sookie. Myles took up a job at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital’s ER department, where, though incredibly stressful due to the struggles of having to deal with the long hours, severe injuries and deaths he witnessed on a near daily basis My loves his job. While not officially married, Myles will usually refer to his partner as his husband.

My and his husband decided to go on holiday to Australia for a few weeks in order to de-stress a bit and relax, leaving the care of their “babies” to Chase’s sister.

Unfortunately for them, the trip would be anything but relaxing…
