the really interesting thing about mortys fear of relying on rick is that it really does go both ways. like as much as hes afraid of needing rick... rick needs him just as much, if not more. and i think this ties into mortys fear of having to be responsible for ricks sadness.

there are SO many times where morty threatens to leave rick... just as rick constantly reminds morty that he can be replaced.

the difference is that morty COULD leave rick behind if he really wanted to. and he could probably be okay without him. but hell always come back to rick... because thats how hes meant to be. a mortys defining trait is how he will always put rick and his emotions first.

we can see this in evil morty and how he was able to escape the cycle simply by no longer caring about ricks feelings. what makes him different isnt being evil... its simply no longer prioritising the feelings of rick over his own.

like how many times do we see morty choosing to stay with rick despite everything rick puts him through? and i think this is partly where his forgiveness comes from. of course he does truly love rick and that plays into it, but hes also terrified of what might happen without him there to fall back on.

any time rick feels he might lose morty he spirals and lashes out in some weird manipulative way to keep morty reliant on him (which is ironically the very thing morty fears most).

and whenever he DOES lose morty for any amount of time he turns into a complete wreck. probably part of the fear of his own reliance on rick comes from knowing its largely manufactured by rick and not fully his own choice.

even WITH morty there to support him rick is incredibly prone to suicidal ideation and self destructive tendencies. its not hard to work out what would happen if morty was no longer around to cater to his emotions.

so he stays. of course its awful for him. but he does it. hes willing to sacrifice himself and his own emotions to save rick over and over again. because he knows what will happen if he doesnt.

do you ever think about how Hawks had the biggest failure in the manga? Like if the core theme is that people who are left of society need others to reach out to them and that if people genuinely try to understand others there can be a connection, essentially the character and narrative who completely failed this theme is Keigo and Jin. Keigo failed Jin. Like, Keigo's even been the mouthpiece for this theme of connectedness in the manga and bringing people together (his comments when Deku was brought in), several times over, and I keep thinking of how it will look when Shigaraki is saved and reached out to by Deku, how this will look when Touya is finally home with his family, when Himiko gets to have a normal night with Ochako and just be a normal girl. Keigo's just going to have to live with the very apparent realization that the kids succeeded where he failed and that Jin's blood is on his hands needlessly. He'll look at the kids and the villains they saved and look around himself and realize he could have had that, too, if only he'd tried to connect. Hawks has always been a really tragic character, and I know from the start we were into this idea of a boy thrown into tragic circumstances with no freedom out of them, but I think there's something to be said that the biggest failure in this manga, and likely of his life, was due to his own actions and buying into his own narrative of never having another choice.

ALSO!! not just souji jumping in because we know he would he's down bad for yosuke BUT ALSO KANJI #listen you've all heard me talk so much about how i adore kanji yosuke friendships #i can't really tell whether it's kanji or souji that says “haven't we earned your trust yet” but it's a line that hits SO HARD #regardless of which one of them was saying it and i think it hits hard in slightly different manners #it's kanji's admiration and how he looks up to yosuke and how he wants to be closer to yosuke as a friend/kouhai/whatever you want #tatsumi “who's your partner now!” kanji has so much respect for yosuke he wants yosuke to rely on him too!!! #and this stands out because kanji is very conscious of social hierarchies and such but as a kouhai as yosuke's junior #he's so specific about wanting yosuke to treat him as an equal #i smtimes feel bad for kanji because he has a bit of that vibe of a poor puppy trailing after souyo because he wants to be in their convos! #he wants to be included! but critically he also just! wants them to SEE him!! #going a lil off tangent but i think kanji's attitude towards souji is very much one of kouhai respect like he understands his place #of like deferring to souji or getting advice from him and just generally regarding him as a reliable mentor #and it's the same with chie and yukiko? but idk man. with yosuke. guys. with yosuke i always feel like kanji wants to break that hierarchy #that convention. that social norm. to cross a line and be closer to yosuke. #he's more willing to tease yosuke in a way he doesn't with the other 2nd years. and this isn't coming from a place of disrespect either #AGAIN. The Jor-El A.I. looked so sad when he realized Clark doesn't understand Kryptonian.

HE DID he was trying so hard to connect to him and explain who he is and Clark just can't understand him and he presumably can't understand Clark either 😭 idk how well the AI can perceive time and emotions etc/how much of Jor-El he is, but he was created for one single purpose and spent years laying dormant waiting and now that Clark is finally here he just,, can't.

And if it's at least in some part Jor-El's consciousness rather than a full emotionless AI that looks like him (since usually it is) that's his SON and they don't even share a language. Kal-El who he loved so much that he did all he did to save him from a dying planet, and he's alive, he really survived, but he was raised by strangers (and bless them for it) on a strange planet with strange customs and now they can't even communicate. Jor-El can't tell him about Krypton, his people and his own family, and he can't ask Clark about how his life has been on earth either. Can't even ask him if he's happy. Clark has no idea where he's really from and no way to find out because the only one who might be able to tell him speaks a language no one on the whole planet can understand.

The sheer loneliness of it is ripping a hole into my heart and I'm not even there.

in regard to the icemav convo about american made cars: I think it would be funny if after mav gets his regular license, ice buys him a truck that they can use for transporting stuff to the hangar and when he gifts it to mav all the man can do is laugh bc stamped across the ass is MAVERICK. It’s a 2023 ford maverick (in area 51 bc I’m partial to that color)

and mav likes it, but he doesn’t love driving it bc it’s so big (and he just likes being a passenger princess too much), so ice drives it mostly which inspires a whole lot of jokes about ice liking having maverick’s name stamped on his ass. bradley gags from the other room every time.

if it matters to u, i agree with this hc 150% on rhetoric grounds. thank god for your mind.

however i would like to raise the issue that recent american pickup trucks have become non-useful, overexpensive, and suburban-coded in a way i think ice and mav would reject. the ford maverick was built with the intention of dropping kindergarteners off at school, not of actually doing hard labor. see below infographic for what I mean.

what good is having a fucking truck if it can’t even hold two REGULAR ASS BIKES in the bed. & when the bed is empty the chassis is unbalanced in a way that leads to more accidents etc. (tbf that was true in the 70s/80s too but im feeling more hateful towards modern trucks rn). In short—the modern American pickup truck is no longer useful, it’s a way to virtue signal to other Americans that you *think * you know what hard labor is, even when you’re driving around in a glorified odyssey with a teeny tiny bed that can barely hold a couple bags of mulch for the back garden

ice & mav don’t even have any little kids anymore, i think they’d consider a backseat useless & a waste of space

SO i would like to offer you a Compromise, which is that ice & mav buy either (or both) a 1974 ford maverick AND/OR a 1990 ford maverick
