The Psychology of Guilt
Theatrical trailer
Richard Gere stars as Martin Vail, a famed defense lawyer who volunteers his services to Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), a Kentucky teenager charged with the murder of a Chicago archbishop. Covered with blood, Aaron was captured after a foot chase broadcast live on TV, making a gleeful Vail certain that he could raise his profile by defending the obviously guilty suspect. Assigned to prosecute is Assistant District Attorney Janet Venable (Laura Linney), who is Vail's ex-girlfriend. Vail's case becomes more complicated than he expected when a psychologist, Dr. Molly Arrington (Frances McDormand) concludes that Stampler suffers from multiple personality disorder. Vail also uncovers evidence that the archbishop was involved in a corrupt land scheme and may have molested young parishioners. Now the cynical, opportunistic attorney is faced with a daunting prospect: a client who may actually deserve his best defense.
Pre-order Primal Fear.

The Crows + Their Daemons, from a crossover of the Golden Compass/His Dark Materials and the Grishaverse. I tried to use the exact images I was referencing during the story so far, so sorry if the examples look weird. I also included in an edit the voice actors I picture in my head that would voice the daemons, though to me daemons have a strange voice that sounds as if it’s a blend of their human’s voice and their own. However that’s just me you are completely free to interpret them however you’d like.
It’s called “God I Want To Feel Again” on AO3 if you’d like to read it!

I was just on Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland and thought, “a pirate romance would be great right about now.” Any recs? Thank you!
I dooo--these aren't really true-blue Golden Age of Piracy PIRATE PIRATE recs because a lot of those are *quite* old and *quite* problematic even by my standards... And I mean, that era of piracy is kind of inherently rough because piracy like, directly intersected with the slave trade, among other things, etc.
If you're open to something more magical and whimsical, I would absolutely recommend India Holton's The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels and The League of Gentlewoman Witches. They're set in a Victorian world populated by thieves and witches and pirates who fly like, airships. They're SO funny and sexy and romantic, but they still hav stakes, too. I actually find the heroes of both books very piratey. One is like, a charmer sort of like, borderline himbo, and the other is one of the slickest heroes I've ever read. Both are great, Gentlewoman Witches edges out the first for me juuust a little because of how the sex in that one works. She's just like "I am very stressed" and he's like "I have a solution". At one point they're just jacking/fingering each other while steering the ship lmao.
Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt OF COURSE. Charming Mickey O'Connor (one of the greatest hero names of all time sorry) is a river pirate. He's very successful, very dangerous, and has an incredibly OTT accent that Elizabeth Hoyt sells because it's Elizabeth Hoyt and she can sell almost anything. His heroine is a Quaker widow who ends up trapped on his ship because he, GET THIS, left his bastard infant daughter on her orphanage doorstep, and a year later, after she's fallen in love with this baby, shows up like "SO YEAH WE'RE IN DANGER AND I CAN'T HAVE PEOPLE USING SHIT AGAINST ME SO I WANT THAT BABY BACK EVEN THO IDGAF ABOUT IT". And Silence is like well if you're taking the baby you're taking ME too. And so he does.
The Hawk by Monica McCarty has a medieval hero who's like, a lord and shit, but also very much a self-acknowledged pirate. He's always swimming naked and using his piratical ways to do spy shit for Robert the Bruce. His heroine is an uptight Irish noblewoman he literally fishes out of the sea. This is indeed the "they fuck on a raft in the middle of a storm because the storm makes her anxious" book.
How to Tame a Wild Rogue by Julie Anne Long has a hero who's a privateer, which is BASICALLY THE SAME THING LBR. The action doesn't really take place on the ship, because he and the heroine end up in the same room at this boarding house during a once in a lifetime storm (it's like a bottle episode romance, it's really fascinating) but he's still got that pirate charm. She's a spinster and has kinda missed out on life. At one point they play this weird old-timey game to pass the time and it gets oddly sexual, which is such a Julie Anne Long thing.
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale. Allegreto is, while also being an assassin and political mover and shaker, a pirate on the side. Part of the book does take place on a ship, I believe, and the interesting thing is that it also takes place, in part, in VENICE, so you get the whole canal life. Allegreto is legit crazy. TW: noncon for the first encounter, one of those forced consummation things because he needs the heroine to marry him as a part of his Evil Plot.
(Sidebar: I always find this scene so interesting, because it is very obviously noncon, but in a way that I think is period-accurate she sort of is like more mad about her virginity being gone? Because she needs that for marital and political reasons? And she also realizes that he SUPER got off on her biting him, and he's shaken because she really wasn't supposed to know that he was into that, and SHE begins to connect the dotes re: his sexual inclinations, in that he wants her to dominate him, which is a major weakness of his.)
Lord of Temptation by Lorraine Heath. The hero's brother basically sold him--he was willing--to piratey types when they were young teens because they were on the run from their evil uncle. So he grew up and became this well known captain/pirate. Now he's sort of integrated back into polite society, but he doesn't want it, so he goes out to sea and ends up escorting the heroine when she's on the way to see her fiancee. Cue sex on a boat. This one is really fun because it gives major ILLICIT AFFAIRS.
Any Duke in a Storm by Amalie Howard. Arguably the most traditional piratey one here. The heroine is actually a spy, but she has this pirate identity and is very cold and fierce. The hero (who naturally is both piratey and a duke) becomes her first mate (or something like that) and she actually thinks he's a part of the illegal operation she's trying to bust. HOWEVER, things get complicated because he's wildly attracted to her and trying to get into her pants. There is indeed a fight where she ends up on top of him and realizes he's massively hard and there are like 12 pirates watching.

The Alice Siblings
Eddie Redmayne as Jasper Alice
Laura Gwyneth Butler as Kathryn Alice
Maya Hawke as Aimee Alice
Anyways I love them sm because their freckles make them all look like genuine siblings you cannot tell me otherwise. I’ll be updating Kaths profile as I’m remaking her so would love any oc interaction with any of these kids. Kath is hphm mc age, Jasper is maybe 3 years older than her? And Aimee is golden era so like 10 years younger. Big age gap oof. Tagging @carewyncromwell because she was a huge help with brainstorming for my remake 💕

Award Season is among us. Our reviewer Actor, Producer and Journalist Alex von Roon can't wait to check out the contenders starting off with HBO' s "Succession". How do you like Alexander as "Ken" in the Hit Movie "Barbie"? Von Roon did work with the director before and enjoyed her performance in "Greenberg"
For "Bild am Sonntag" Alex also met SAG Award nominee Tony Shalhoub on set in his trailer. Some comments were very interesting. We wonder how Mr. Monk would deal with a pandemic such as Corona.
Below please find the complete list of nominations courtesy of SAGAFTRA. Which are your favorites? Comment below.

Book Updates <3
Ok guys I just finished the second book in the Honey Mountain series by Laura Pavlov (Ever Mine) and omg that was so freaking adorable!! Hawk - whilst I absolutely hate his name and the stupid nickname they give him in the book - is actually such a likeable character which I can’t lie, I don’t often see in the books I read. Everly also feels like such a real character, and someone I’m sure plenty of people would be able to relate to.
It’s not a long book (<300) pages) and if you like small town romance books, or want to start reading them then I definitely recommend trying this series.
I have all the other books in the series ready to go, and I’ll be posting a tiktok for this book tomorrow or the next day so keep an eye out for that!
My tiktok is :
So please do make sure to check it out if you’re interested!
Also here’s the link to Ever Mine by Laura Pavlov if you want to give it a read yourself!
Ok that’s it!
Love to anyone reading this <3

PPG's Final Ride (Edit)
Jacob Smith
Emma Weltz is a 5'7 point guard from Timmins Ontario who has won a national bronze medal, a national silver medal and a OUA silver medal, but long before that the journey started with a trio that would set the foundation for a build to one of the greatest in the country. Emma attended O'Gorman High up until grade 12 where she moved to Southwest Academy of the OSBA, far away from her home but towards two people who would go with her to the next destination.
Laura Donovan, a 5'11 shooting guard from London Ontario and Claire Litchfield, a 5'6 guard from London Ontario, also attended Southwest during the 2017 season, and the eventual friendship that would grow from their year together away from home made the transition to their next step that much easier.
"Playing with Laura and Claire was an awesome experience, I quickly became very good friends with the both of them and that made my transition to the OSBA a lot smoother and easier. There were so many good OSBA teams that we played against and that was crucial to my development as a player and allowed me to get to where I am today," Emma reflected on her year in the OSBA.
Though they all ended up in the OUA playing for the Queen's Gaels, Emma says "it was never a plan, it just worked very well for us. We were all being recruited by different schools at the time. I had committed to Queen's pretty early into the OSBA season and they decided a little later but I was so excited when they decided to commit because we were already great friends and we were that much more comfortable."
The easier transition to the next level and the Queen's Gaels coached by Dave Wilson, set Emma off on a strong foot as she earned Queen's Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year playing all 23 games at 14.2 minutes per game. Emma didn't become a full time starter until her third year but starting 15 of 22 games in her second year, she showed early that she could make an impact in the fast paced guard centric style that Queen's operates.
Emma came into Queen's with Laura Donovan who would be with her throughout her entire Gaels career and Abbey Hetherington who would be there through all but her final year. They were joining Bridget Mulholland who would also be there throughout all five years of Emma's career, and in her second year, a fifth was added. Julia Chadwick joined the team the year after to form a pact of five that grew closer and closer through the years.
"We got used to each other very quickly. Especially between the last two years, we've figured out how to really play with each other and we know how to distribute the ball between one another."
The Gaels got a new interim head coach in 2019, James Bambury who was an assistant coach under Dave Wilson previously. With that new leadership, the Gaels built on their previous results, finishing with the same 15 wins but making it a game further in the OUA playoffs, beating the Laurier Golden Hawks and falling to the TMU Bold in the second round. Emma doubled her points and rebounds per game in her second year shooting at a higher percentage and starting 15 of 22 games.
The next time Emma took the court was 2021-22 after the season was shut down in 2020 for the COVID-19 pandemic. "Training in COVID was certainly an adjustment. We definitely had to be creative in practice. For instance, we had outdoor basketball nets set up on the concrete behind the Queen's football stadium, and practiced there until we were able to be back together indoors. I think getting to play our first game after COVID was so exciting - it felt like the time would never come. I think playing through those times was a testament to our team's resilience."
Emma's first game back was a 85-52 preseason win over the Western Mustangs on October 16 2021, a lead-in to a very unique season. The OUA decided going into the 2021 season that due to the ongoing pandemic, the best option for a season was to limit as much travel as possible, creating a 14-game schedule where the OUA was split in half and the eastern and western conference would only play games within their own conference.
The Gaels went 9-5 during the shortened regular season, losing to the eventual undefeated champions in the TMU Bold, 67-58 in the second round of the OUA playoffs. Though the chance for a OUA title ended early, their season wasn't done yet as they hosted the U SPORTS Final 8 at the Queen's ARC, setting themselves up with a first round matchup with the Saskatchewan Huskies in front of a raucous crowd.
"It was an unbelievable experience, the support we had from friends and family and the alumni," Emma said of hosting the national championship tournament, "it was electric in the gym and I think that really helped us get to where we got to that year. We went in with nothing to lose and we just wanted to defend our home court. I wish we could host nationals every year because it was the best experience."
The Gaels game against the defending National Champs in the Saskatchewan Huskies ended with a 62-55 victory. Emma had 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting, backed up by 19 points from Julia and 12 rebounds from Sophie holding the Gaels efforts inside the paint against a physical Huskies squad.
Up next the Gaels went against the efficient shooting of the Winnipeg Wesmen in the U SPORTS Semifinals. Winnipeg shot 49 per cent from the field in the game leading them to a 80-78 victory, and it was the three point shooting of the Gaels and the point guard skills of Emma that kept the Gaels in it until the end.
With one game between the Gaels and a bronze on their own court, they used their physicality and relentlessness to get through the Brock Badgers. They defeated Brock 75-57 in the U SPORTS Bronze Medal game and behind six made threes from Isabella Belvedere, five assists from Emma and 16 points and 13 rebounds from Julia, the Gaels were medalists in the National Championship, with only room to grow going into the following year.
Emma's fourth season with the Gaels is by all counts her best. From a team perspective going 21-1 and making it to both the OUA and U SPORTS Championship final. The core of Laura, Bridget, Julia and Emma looked as dominant as ever and there was really no team outside of the other top two in their division in Carleton and Ottawa, that could run with them for 40 minutes.
From an individual perspective, Emma started the most amount of games in her fourth season in 22 games. She started 26 minutes per game, down from 30 the previous year but in an expanded back-to-normal schedule, shot a career best 35 per cent from three, put up a career high 72 assists and a career high 198 points over the course of the season.
The only team Queen's lost to throughout the year was Carleton, falling 64-32 to the Ravens in the regular season, 70-57 in the OUA championship and 71-59 in the National Championship final. The signature on a great season from Emma came in the first game of the championship tournament, against the UQAM Citadins. In a 75-72 overtime victory over UQAM, Emma put on display exactly why you want her leading your team in any situation. She played 40 minutes, shot 56 per cent for a game high 29 points, accrued four steals but on top of the numbers, she led the team through constant pushbacks from the Citadins.
Emma showed that she wanted it more than anyone she was going up against, and that leadership and energy is something she prides herself on, "A lot of my leadership is based off my energy that I have for my team."
It doesn't take you long watching the Gaels to see Emma's energy and the pride she plays with every minute of the game,

Do you have any good recs for pirate romances? Preferably with smart/spunky heroines (anything but innocent)?
Yes! So, I will say--I haven't ventured far into the Golden Age of Piracy beyond books I read as a child that require... re-assessment, as that era of piracy is very heavily linked to the slave trade. I'm not saying there aren't solid pirate books out there, I'm saying that a lot of those Golden Age books are old school--so they have the issues that come with being old school along with the issues of their era.
Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt--an all time favorite of mine. Hero is an Irish river pirate, but don't let the river fool you. He is 80% pirate, 20% river AT BEST. (Charming) Mickey O'Connor basically got a lady pregnant, and that lady died, and then he had a baby, and what did he do with that baby? He anonymously left her at an orphanage run by a Quaker widow he publicly humiliated a while back, OBVI. When this book begins, the widow, Silence (sister of Winter and Asa Makepeace, praise be) basically runs up on his pirate lair to be like "I ACTUALLY LOVE THAT BABY, GIVE BACK BABY" and Mickey is all "Silence m'dear, uh, no, unless you want to stay on my ship and cruise while I seduce you with artichokes and sensual masturbation".
Truly a Hoyt classic, with one of her best heroes and one of her best heroines, and the heroine is also sister to two of her other great heroes. It fucks. I think there's a scene where she says I love you while he's inside her and he insta-ejaculates. Silence is not an innocent heroine; she's not a virgin, and she's a bit... quiet and kind, but world-weary, and she comes into her own with Mickey.
The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne. Another river pirate. Heroine finds hero near death when they're kids, nurses him back to health, and before he's forced to leave he tells her he'll come back to her. Years and years later, her brother is about to force her to marry this asshole, and the hero shows up at the church on her wedding day, kills her brother and fiance, spirits her to his ship, and forces her to marry him by maritime law. An insane book. Better if you read The Highwayman first (a criminal mastermind book, not a pirate book) which is a criminal mastermind book. Heroine isn't super spunky, but because her brother was an asshole she's jaded.
The Bootlegger's Bounty by Adriana Herrera is a novella about a bootlegger (obviously) in the 1920s. He's villainous, what with the novella being a part of the Villain I'd Like to F... collection. It's m/m/f, so he ends up with a chanteuse type lady and a boyish hot young thang. DEF NOT INNOCENT.
The Hawk by Monica McCarty has a piratical hero, even though he's like... a lord and part of Robert the Bruce's Seal Team 6, basically. It's a Scottish medieval, and he like, hauls this uptight Irish heroine out of the water, and he's all "oh wow she's annoying". He's wild, she's restrained, eventually they have sex on a raft that is in literal motion in the midst of a storm with gale force winds. It's excellent. The heroine is a virgin, but she's quite smart and gives the hero a lot of shit, lol.
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale has a hero who's a pirate/lord/bastard/assassin. Like, you meet him as a pirate, and it goes from there. One of the best books I've ever read, I cried, I swooned, he's deranged, she's ready to play ball, at one point she ties him so he's sort of hanging from the ceiling and he could totally get loose but instead he just thrashes and does a whole "mercy" thing. I will say the first encounter is noncon, though I'd call it fairly mild in terms of how explicit or violent it is. To me, it made sense for the story. It stands alone, but it's even better if you read the not-piratical (knights) For My Lady's Heart first. Heroine is a virgin, but definitely has a snarky side, and once she blossoms~ with the hero, she is off to the races.
How to Tame a Wilde Rogue by Julie Anne Long (out 7/25) is a lovely read about a privateer (not totally a pirate, but close) getting stuck sharing a room with a spinster highborn lady at an inn over the course of an intense storm. It's a romcom, for sure. Heroine is a virgin, but jaded by bad luck and spinsterhood.
If you're down for steampunk, Milla Vane's The Iron Duke has a pirate-turned-duke hero and a heroine who's like... part robot sorta? Heads up, the hero describes childhood SA, and there is some dubcon, though I personally liked it. Serious, but not innocent (bi) heroine.
If you're open to historical fantasy vibes, I LOVE India Holton's Dangerous Damsels series. It's full of pirates in flying houses, witches, and spies; there are high emotional stakes but it's very whimsical and funny. The first two books have pirate heroes--I think the first book has a pirate heroine as well, and it's very "charming rakish pirate meets rebellious young lady"; the next one maaay still be my favorite in the series, and it's a sexy Irish pirate and a sheltered witch wunderkind. They start having sex to take the edge off, and I swear I remembered a scene where they're steering the ship, but each one has one hand down the other's pants.
I never do this, but--you're gonna see Sea of Ruin recommended. I rarely do this, but I will anti-rec it. I don't think it handles its subject matter well. It also has the heroine's mom die by jumping off a "cliff" off the coast of South Carolina (around Charleston). This is the lowcountry. There are no cliffs. She would get sucked into the marsh. A gator would eat her. She's not jumping off a cliff.
