Has anyone here talked before about how cool the scene where Han and Luke are wearing stormtrooper armor is?
I mean.. We can tell who is who, not only by their height or voices, but also by their behavior. And it's really cute and funny!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Han is serious and stands straight, while Luke looks around and sways in one place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luke also keeps his hand on his belt, just like he did on Tatooine (I really love this detail about him<3).
And all this is just in the first film, when we don't know much about them, but despite this, we can guess who is under these helmets.

Dramas 2022 post
Time for the annual drama post. haha I think I massively slowed down this year because I couldn't make myself stick with dramas until the end. I think only 5 of these were in september or later? Comparing to last year it looks like K/J dramas stayed about the same but the number of chinese dramas dropped drastically. It's funny to look at 2019 where I thought 15 was slowing down and said things like "I’ve only watched 5 Korean dramas that aired this year which seems so small to me now" half way through the year. *stares at my 7 for the year*
I'm so confused about where my time went but I guess it went to traveling and work? I'm hoping that in the next couple months I can find the gems that I somehow missed this year.
Looking back on the comments that I made about what I was watching and the future, Our Beloved Summer was great and stayed good but I found them so frustrating I don't know if there's any rewatch value. Delicious Romance I loved all of them but the male leads were so crappy that I couldn't take it.
Total dramas: 24 Korean: 7 Chinese: 9 Japanese: 6
I think the dramas that are going to have made the biggest impression on me this year are Reset, Business Proposal and She and Her Perfect Husband (honorable mention to Sh**ting Stars) for a ton of different reasons.
Reset was so fun because I watched it with friends and we would pause to analyze flames and try to get ahead of where they were in the story. The cast was great everything was so well done that I've recommended it to basically anyone that has asked.
Business Proposal was almost a parody but Sejeong and Ahn Hyo Seob but their whole heart into it and it really showed. I've honestly already rewatched it twice lmao.
Finally She and Her Perfect Husband was my light shining at the end of the tunnel for cute modern Chinese dramas this year after all of the ones I could actually finish either had a smart female leads who had turned off their brains or an a**hole for a ML. When it got delayed I was so upset I didn't know what to do with myself QQ. I think the plot got too messy and the second leads were ridiculous but I love the main couple and Li Dai <3 <3
I didn't watch that many movies but of them "And so the Baton was Passed" really got me. I loved how they played with the timeline and all of her parents were so sweet. The romance part of it is pretty meh but I don't think it reduced the quality for me.
There wasn't really a Japanese drama this year that stood out to me above the rest (haven't watched Silent yet so maybe I'm just missing out) but everything I watched was really cute with a lot of heart and made my days better. Kono Hatsukoi wa Fiction desu is probably on the more garbage end plotwise but the kids are soooo cute. i've followed them all on instagram so there's no going back for me.
Time for this blog to go inactive again until next year :) (unless twitter actually dies)

The Great Produce 48 Rewatch: Ep 4, Short Hair (AOA) Challenge
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome back to the Great Produce 48 Rewatch Recap Thingy! We’re chugging along through our first group challenge mission. We already saw the Love Whisper team, and in the previous post, we saw the Great Peekaboo F*ckup of 2018! Now it’s time for team Short Hair. What terrible, unforgivable, barely noticeable mistake will the MNET editors pick up on this time? Only one way to find out. Let’s dive in!
We pick up at 16:53 in to episode 4. (Or use this link for it with Spanish subtitles -- best I can do right now, since hte other link doesn't seem to be working.) The whole Peekaboo performance was actually just a pre-credits sequence, as it turns out, and now the episode will… start, I guess.
Lee Seungki calls the two teams up to the stage. Oh no! They all forgot to wear pants! It’s just like that dream I had the other night!
Team 2, who I’ll call “blue team”, introduce themselves as “High Class.”
Tumblr media
Left to right, they are:
Lee Sian, 19, from Idol School, who fell from C to D and was ranked 18th in episode 3.
Hasegawa Rena, 17, who auditioned alongside Noe, fell from D to F and was ranked 54th.
Imada Mina, 21, from theNever Ending Ferris Wheel group, who rose from D to C and was ranked 64th.
Ahn Yewon, 17, one of the YGK+ models, who has lived in F and is ranked 88th.
Matsuoka Natsumi, 21, also from Never Ending Ferris Wheel, who rose from F to C and was ranked 55th.
(Originally, Tanaka Miku was in this group, but she had to leave due to an injury.)
The red team introduces themselves as “Sneak a Peek.”
Tumblr media
Left to right, they are:
Yu Minyoung, 18, the always squinting mint polka dots wearer in Celeb Five who moved from A to B, ranked 32
Jo Yuri, 16, future soloist, the one who fell from A to F, ranked 19th.
Takahashi Juri, 20, future member of Rocket Punch who auditioned with Mako, rose from B to A and is ranked 29th.
Kim Minseo, 15, yellow polka dots in Celeb Five, stayed in C, ranked 39th
Kojima Mako, 21, auditioned with Playing With Fire, rose from C to B and currently ranked 23rd.
Kim Sihyeon, 18, future member of Everglow who rose from B to A and is ranked 13th.
Dance Bae notes that Red team has a lot of popular members, but that we never know who will win until the end.
Tumblr media
Subtitles: now with 100% more Spanish!
We zoom back to the practice of group 1 (red team), When we left off, this group was getting along really well and had chosen Juri as their center despite her polite protestations. We go to dance practice, and Dance Bae is NOT HAPPY with Juri’s performance. She stops and asks the group, “She wanted to be center and you let her? But it seems that she has absolutely no idea what she’s doing.” There’s supposed to be a “domino effect” movement -- where each moves in turn down the line -- and Juri is off-beat, ruining the effect. Since she’s in the middle of the line, it really has a major effect. Oh no!! Juri!! Dance Bae makes them do it again and again and again.
I should note that I love Juri from having watched Queendom Puzzle. In the now-times, Juri has a beautiful, smoky-toned voice, a ton of stage presence and charm, and a hilarious 4D personality.  She’s just great. But back in 2018, maybe some of this hadn’t settled in for her yet.
Juri feels terrible about making her whole team anxious.
Dance Bae says, “I’m sorry but… you’re doing a bad job at the moment. This will hurt your feelings, but I don’t have a choice. With Juri here, you girls will have a problem. “
The editors splice in a picture of some rain to indicate how we’re all feeling.
Tumblr media
LTR: Kojima Mako, Kim Minseo, Juri, Yu Minyoung, Jo Yuri, Kim Sihyeon
Sihyeon stammers a bit, as we hear her voiceover saying that she feels like she’s been doing a terrible job as team leader, and that she’s worried about how sad this is going to make Juri. Before Sihyeon can say anything more, Juri says -- starting off in Korean and switching soon to Japanese -- that though she appreciates the opportunity, she thinks they should change positions to help ensure that the group wins.
Tumblr media
Though Juri holds it together when talking to her group, bowing out gracefully, she interviews that she is upset that she didn’t do a good job despite how hard she worked.
They decide to vote for a new center, so they can show Dance Bae something different next time. They’re about to vote (and MNET does some annoying editing, whatever) when Jo Yuri says, “Actually, I think that Juri really suits the center from what I’ve seen, and I know she can get better with more practice.” Everyone seems to agree, and Juri begins to cry in earnest, harder than she cried when she thought she was resigning.
Tumblr media
“Juri, please don’t cry!”
Tumblr media
“You can do it!”
Sihyeon says, “It has to be so hard for her. She had to learn a song she’d never heard, and on top of it she was the center. My heart is with her. I think she’d be feeling angry and discouraged if she had to give up the center position this way.”
Juri is grateful for their understanding. She tries again and works hard. Ganbarimasu!
And then… it’s time for the performance!
Here is PD48 Editing’s blessed edit.
Tumblr media
Mako, Yuri, Minyoung, Minseo, Sihyeon, Juri
Tumblr media
Clockwise from bottom left: Minseo (kneeling), Minyoung, Mako, Juri, Sihyeon, Yuri (kneeling)
Jo Yuri: main vocal  Takahashi Juri: Sub vocal 1 Kim Sihyeon: sub vocal 2 Kojima Mako: sub vocal 3  Yu Minyoung: Rapper 1 Kim Minseo: Rapper 2
My thoughts:
Overall, a really good performance, though not necessarily mind blowing or anything like that.
Vocally, they sounded really good on the whole. Yuri hit the notes cleanly and well, with a nice vocal color, though she didn’t hold the notes quite as long as I think she should have. I mean, she’s 16, it’s fine. Juri’s voice wasn’t like it is nowadays, and that’s ok, she still did well.
The two rappers, Minseo and Minyoung, actually had a lot of energy and sounded about as good as you could hope they would. They also brought a surprising amount of charm and confidence.
As usual it’s almost impossible to tell if their dance was synchronized because the camera work was focused on their faces, but what I could see looked mostly fine. Here and there I think I noticed Juri a tiny bit behind the beat, dance-wise, unfortunately.
Stage presence wise, Mako, Juri and Yuri were the weaker spots. Mako had a cute smile that didn’t quite fit the “sexy” feel of the dance, and Juri looked a little scared the whole time, like maybe she was thinking about the dance steps or something. She wasn’t connecting to the performance. Yuri also sort of was just going through the motions. The way she sort of sang a given note and sort of stopped gave this energy:
Tumblr media
If I could have stepped in and just changed things, I think I would have put Sihyeon in the center. She performed this like she was a lost member of AOA -- smiling, pouting, flirting, hair flipping, the whole nine. She did great.
The MNET Edit:
We get a lot of reactions to Yuri’s various high notes, and some shots of the audience loving it in general. Not really any annoying instant replays, either.
The judges gush about how good Yuri was. Soyou says, “I’ve liked her since the beginning.” Dance Bae adds, “She’s a good dancer, too.”
And that’s where we leave it for now, as Team 2 takes the stage.
Team 2 (Blue Team)
One more time:
Lee Sian, 19, from Idol School, who fell from C to D and was ranked 18th in episode 3.
Hasegawa Rena, 17, who auditioned alongside Noe, fell from D to F and was ranked 54th.
Imada Mina, 21, from the Never Ending Ferris Wheel group, who rose from D to C and was ranked 64th.
Ahn Yewon, 17, one of the YGK+ models, who has lived in F and is ranked 88th.
Matsuoka Natsumi, 21, also from Never Ending Ferris Wheel, who rose from F to C and was ranked 55th.
(Originally, Tanaka Miku was in this group, but she had to leave due to an injury during this rehearsal period.)
When we left off, the Japanese members of the team had chosen Mina to be center over Sian, out of fear that making Sian the center would make them “Sian and the girls.” We were left with the question of whether that was a good decision.
We dive right in with a voice over from Sian, saying: “At the beginning, I didn’t think it would be that important, but I felt it when we chose the center. The fact that you’re not from here could be an obstacle.” This overlays the shot of the Japanese girls choosing Mina, and this shot…
Tumblr media
… Sian trying to teach herself the choreo while the other girls are sitting working on the lyrics.
There’s also this shot:
Tumblr media
That’s not a mirror -- that’s a frosted glass wall. Some girls are practicing in the room, and some are practicing in the hall outside. Again, not working together.
Sian interviews, “I didn’t even know what to do.”
We go to dance rehearsal, and Dance Bae is NOT HAPPY. Their formations are all off, and their synchronization is non-existent. It really shows how little they rehearsed it together,  and Dance Bae says that they’re all basically just doing their own thing. “How could it be so bad if you practiced? Have you practiced hard? Together?”
Rena interviews, “We couldn’t practice dancing together as a team. The Koreans focused on practicing the choreography, but we Japanese were focusing on memorizing the words.” With different priorities, they were dividing up their time differently.
We see the girls at dance/rap practice. It’s not great. Mina in particular is clearly having a lot of trouble with the fast rapping. Soyou give them this look:
Tumblr media
Then she says, “I don’t really have much to tell you because I couldn’t really hear you well.” She sings a single line twice, once in full voice, and once in a breathy, hard to hear voice, to demonstrate the difference between how they should sound and how they actually sound.
Cheetah, that queen, says, “You’re not really close, are you?” And Sian thinks to herself, oh God, they noticed. It’s my fault because I’m the leader. I kept torturing myself like that.
That night at the dorms, Ah Yewon tells Sian that Cheetah was right -- that they’re not going to get anywhere the way they are, that they have to open up to each other and get closer. Sian decides that she’s right, that they have to try to practice openly together and try to understand each other.
The next day, they’re in one of the rehearsal rooms, and I think they must have a translator there because Sian is speaking in full speed Korean.
Tumblr media
One of these people has to be a translator, right? Also, note that there are still six girls on the team.
Tumblr media
Sian says, “It’s not like we didn’t want to be close. The problem is the language barrier.*
*Me typing this translation of a Spanish subtitle of a Korean sentence spoken to some Japanese speakers is so many layers of language barrier. It'd be even funnier if you, dear reader, are a non-native speaker of English. Especially if you also don't speak Spanish, Korean, or Japanese.
Mina says, “I’ll try more.” (I can’t tell if she’s speaking Japanese or Korean because there’s another sound at the same time she’s speaking, and she speaks really softly.)
Sian says, “I’ll try to learn some Japanese,” and Mina waves her hand from Sian to herself and back again. Sian adds, “I hope we can build up our team work.” The Japanese members nod in agreement, and then Sian says, “Oh god, they scolded us so harshly today! I hate getting negative comments!” And all the girls stand up for a big group hug. Yay! Oh no, it looks like Natsumi is crying! Boo!
Natsumi voiceovers that she wants to help Sian build their teamwork. Yay team!
Tumblr media
More “hwighting” and less fighting, please.
The next day, Sian gives the Japanese girls something she made/wrote down, to help them remember the steps. They thank you and Natsumi reaches out to touch her hand in gratitude.
Tumblr media
They all interview that they are working better as a team now.
No one mentions it, but at some point Miku got injured and had to leave. That sounds really dramatic, MNET. She wanted to stay, from what I heard, so it had to be a pretty bad injury. There must have been a lot of tearful conversations on the topic. Maybe you’d want to show that? Or show the girls scrambling to redistribute parts and learn new formations…? Oh, but you can’t show it, because it makes you look irresponsible, like you’re not taking good enough care of these young girls and letting them get hurt because you push them too hard. Well, thanks, I guess.
Anyway, by dress rehearsal, there are only five of them. The judges don’t smile much as they run through their performance, but at the end, Soyou tells them that they more stable than group 1, with good pronunciation and good teamwork. And Dance Bae even comes back stage to tell them that their hard work paid off.
Tumblr media
“I’m very grateful!” … “I want to cry….”
Sian congratulations her team, and Natsumi begins to cry again. Who is this girl? Is she me?
Sian interviews that she made themselves believe that they could do it, and then they did it.
But can they do it on stage in front of an audience? Let’s find out!
The performance:
Here is PD48 Editing’s blessed edit.
Tumblr media
Natsumi, Rena, Sian, Mina, Yewon
Tumblr media
Clockwise from bottom left: Natsumi, Rena, Mina, Sian, Yewon.
Side note: What are these shoes? Are they… high heeled loafers? What is happening?
My thoughts: First off, how does Natsumi get her hair THAT glossy?
Tumblr media
I mean, all the girls have really pretty hair, but Natsumi’s is on another level. It’s like her hair is made of black onyx, or a dark iPhone screen, or something. It’s wild. Check out her fan cam to see it in action.
Anyway, this was not quite as good as the other team, mostly because of the vocals. They were all on key, and no one made any obvious mistakes, but listening to them sing, it was impossible to imagine that this is a professional debuted group. They sounded like a high school talent show group.
Lee Sian was brave to take on main vocals when that isn’t her area of expertise, so I don’t want to ding her too hard -- she sang well enough to be a sub-vocal in a real group. And that’s a compliment, I swear! So good job, Sian! Did she knock my socks off? No, but she did alright-right-right.
The other four also did well considering, but it’s not as if I want to put this on a playlist and listen to it over and over. Of the three Japanese girls, only Rena seems to avoid the characteristic nasal sound common in these AKB48 members. Natsumi and Mina both have unpleasant vocal color, but at least they are on key, so they’ve made big progress. Main rapper Yewon raps kind of off key, which I know sounds crazy but part of what a rapper does is pick up on a tone to rap in, and Yewon didn’t do that quite correctly.
Dance wise, I don’t really know, because the camera work is obstructive. Nothing really obvious goes wrong, I’ll say that. I think that
Stage presence wise, I think this group has a slight leg up on the first group. They all have pretty good to great facial expressions, and they’re all reasonably confident-seeming. Yewon is a bit…
Tumblr media
… too much.
Mina has a great trick of letting her eyes close a little, and then opening them wider suddenly. It’s like, a power-smize!
Tumblr media

It works.
Revisiting the issue of center, and whether or not putting Sian in the center would have made it “Sian and the girls,” I think it’s relevant to note that Sian was the main vocal. If your center is also your main vocal, then it starts to feel like Destiny’s Child. So, yeah, it makes sense for someone else to be center, and Mina was the best choice among the remaining girls. I think they should have raised that issue during the discussion of who should be center, but maybe they did, or tried to, and had trouble with the communication.
In the MNET edit, we see the judges praising their pronunciation, and praising Sian’s ability to look right at the camera. We also get a few instant replays of some of Sian’s high notes.
When they’re done, the judges are proud of them, and Cheetah looks so cute.
Tumblr media
“I’m proud of them.” “Me too.”
Dance Bae says that they, the trainers, think that Team 2 did better than Team 1, but notes that you never know how the audience will vote.
Tumblr media
“Good job, everyone!”
The girls hug backstage, and Sian said that they’re hoping for a miracle.
For this part, I have a link with English subs.
The girls teleport to the locker room Results Zone…
Tumblr media
More power to the transporters! We’re losing the signal!
They’re sitting on like, foam rubber blocks. MNET, seriously, WTF?
Tumblr media
Sian, Rena, Mina, Ahyoung, Natsumi
Natsumi’s face (far right) is so expressive.
It’s time for the results. The background music is the same music they always used in Face Off when they were revealing the creature makeups, which is so funny to me.
As usual, they reveal the results in a “versus” format -- Main vocal versus Main vocal, etc. What’s kind of strange is that we find out that there was no “sub vocal 1” on the blue team…? I guess that had been Miku’s part, but it’s not as if no-one sang those lines, so I’m confused. Anyway…
Both the main vocals, Jo Yuri and Lee Sian, get a ton of votes -- 152 and 148, respectively.
That’s fair as they both did well and are also pretty and popular. The second highest vote getters on each team were Japanese -- Mako on Red with 120 votes, and Natsumi on blue with 90. Juri is ready to blame herself if her team loses, but neither center did exceptionally well; Juri got 52 votes, and Mina got 36. Here is the full list:
Team Red (win):
Tumblr media
left to right:
Yu Minyoung 28 Jo Yuri     152 Takahashi Juri 52 Kim Minseo 26 Kojima Mako 120 Kim Sihyeon 64              Total: 442, Average 73.67
Team Blue (lost):
Tumblr media
Very classy of them to applaud for team red.
Left to right:
Lee Sian 148 Hasegawa Rena 50 Imada Mina 36 Ahn Yewon 16 Matsuoka Natsumi 90 Total: 340, Average: 68
Juri interviews, tearfully, that she feels bad about the whole thing. Her team was so nice and believed in her, and she feels like she let them down. “It’s because of them that I was able to go so far,” she says. “I’m so grateful to my team.”
You know, my friends, if I wasn’t already a Juri fan from getting to know her on Queendom Puzzle, I think I’d kind of hate her at this point. MNET shoving her in my face, and focusing on her storyline above all else, it just makes me kind of irritated. I know Juri is awesome-sauce, though. So this is just further proof that MNET is The Worst. Thanks, dumbasses. Thumbasses.
And with that, we’ll wrap up for now! Thanks for sticking with me so far! See you next time, when we cover Team Mamma Mia.

My 2020 in K dramas (+1 J drama)
I began watching k-dramas in 2018 but I’ve never watched as many shows, Korean or otherwise, as I have in this one. 2020 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I think what helps me really enjoy this over Bollywood+Malayalam+ American pop culture I grew up with is that a smirk on the wrong character’s face doesn’t make me seethe with rage and want to burn everything down. It’s not like growing up with SRK on screen and then having SRK wannabes leave you with lifelong trauma in reality. I can just move on. It’s removed enough from my everyday life but still familiar in a generic Asian family way. Does that make sense? It’s not perfect and it’s not free of its own harmful stereotypes and narratives, but there’s enough of the good stuff to make you stick around. This year I fell in love with Nana, Kim Hye Soo, Han Yeri, Park Eun bin, Ahn Eun jin, Kim Bum, Kim Yong ji, Flower Boy’s Go Dok Mi and Search:WWW’s Bae Tami. Cancelled Ji Chang wook (bye). Desperately missed Kim Jae Wook. Had thoughts on Hwang In Yeop, which were mostly heart eyes. Discovered J dramas and fell in love with Cherry Magic’s Adachi.
My year-in-review below:
LOVED
Into The Ring - I am so glad I saved this for a rainy day because it’s exactly the kind of upright citizen shenanigans my unemployed ass needed at the end of the year.
Goo Se Ra thinks the govt should work for the people but that doesn’t mean her own moral compass always points north. Her purpose is to make steady money, and I love seeing her go hard to survive and cobble together what she needs. The thing that really works for me is that she wants to be good, but she isn’t always. And you get to see her be disappointed, upset, embarrassed and hurt from being publicly kicked in the gut as she navigates a job where she appears, on the surface, to be a supremely confident, self-serving, accidental politician. What you see as her naiveté is mostly just her being a regular person in an environment dictated by backhand deals and rich people politics. She gets hit again and again, and you see what it does to her sense of worth to get back up again, how she grapples with her self. And through all this the show is funny?! Se Ra is what writers of manic pixie characters think they are doing and not doing at all. Love her friends, and Jang Hye-jin is *chef’s kiss*!
Hyena - Kim Hye Soo’s Jung Geum Ja is perhaps Se Ra’s older and darker contemporary.  Geum Ja is a survivor and will get what she wants and where she wants to, however many hells she has to cross. She’s single-minded about her success, ruthless and has no qualms about bending morals to get the outcome she needs. She’ll never compromise on who she is or justify how she lives, can build people up and also tear them down, but she also knows care and kindness.
I turned to Signal for more Kim Hye Soo but was disappointed in how the first few episodes seemed to shortchange her. May try again in 2021.
(Highly recommend @saltr0se’s  fic series which just GETS Geum Ja so well. Fic writers are the best)
Search: WWW (Finished in 2020) - It took me half a year to finish this. I started watching Search in Oct 2019 and raced through the first 6 episodes because I couldn’t take my eyes off the rollercoaster of Bae Tami’s life. And then I had to take a break because it was a little too close to the frenetic pace of my own industry. As @drivingsideways wrote, a lot of Search is premised around ‘patriarchy? who dat?’, which is why watching its politics play out is so fascinating.  It’s also deliciously turmoil-y to watch a very clear-sighted, weathered Tami put on rose-tinted glasses for her romance and then frequently peer over them to evaluate whether it could actually meld into her life.
Catch The Ghost - Kim Seonho oozes charm and perhaps Startup was a showcase of how effectively he can be a typical male lead. But Catch is exactly not that. Go Jiseok and Yoo Ryeong have moulded their lives around to meet their most desperate wishes in life and in the process also left parts of themselves untended. There is guilt, pain and need. Now guess who will tend to whose wounds? Their dynamic is electric even when the central mystery flags towards the last few episodes of the show. I really hope Moon Geun Young is doing well and gets more amazing roles soon. She is so good here.
(Highly recommend @melonatures‘s fic for putting that sizzling on-screen chemistry into words. HOW?!) Cherry Magic - Stories about painfully awkward people are my jam and Eiji Akaso gets Adachi’s shy, nervy energy so right. Cherry Magic is straight up just 12 hours of 🥺🥺🥺.
Stranger/Secret Forest - I’ve been devouring the entirety of Agatha Christie’s work this year after Stranger reminded me how comforting murder mysteries can be. I love Bae Doona. I also love characters who don’t get social norms, not always because they are out to flout them but because that’s just not how their mind/brain works. (have to watch S2)
Flower Boy Next Door -  Honestly, the opening scene introducing Park Shin Hye’s character Go Deok Mi sold me on this immediately. An introverted, penny pinching copy editor living alone and working from home thanks to extreme social anxiety? Love. All the side characters are a lot of fun and I’ve never loved Kim Seulgi and Go Kyung Pyo more. It’s a warm show, slowly rounding off the sharp edges of every character.
JUST FUN
The Spies Who Loved Me -  It’s been a year of disappointing rom-coms and Spies kind of quietly turned it around for me. I want to be the fly on Yoo In Na’s wall as she figures how to play her characters. I’ve only seen her in 3 roles but somehow she always manages to be in character arcs that don’t short change her. Spies could’ve been and sometimes is the regular heterosexual fare, but In Na ups the ante over and over again, coming out on top as the smartest person in the room.
ENJOYED WITH *RESERVATIONS*
I have to watch A Piece Of Your Mind again because I don’t understand how Jung Hae In and Chae Soo bin built SO MUCH warmth and crackling chemistry with barely a kiss. I was iffy about how the whole AI thing started off and the tortured musician plotline (angsty male artists will forever be an eyeroll for me).
Park Min Young is a queen who never disappoints and When The Weather Is Nice is everything you want in a winter romance. My reservation was in how they explore so much of domestic abuse and the complex ways its traumatised the women in this family. I’m ok with the characters having imperfect ways of processing and understanding the violence, I welcome it. I’m not ok with the show dancing around whether the pivotal crime was justified/ self defence (it was).
A lot of dramas did this. I loved Han Yeri and Choo Ja Hyun in My Unfamiliar Family, I didn’t like the free pass the show gave their dad’s abusive character.
Hwang Jung Eum’s comedy style is generally not my thing but she was pretty great in Mystic Pop-UP Bar. But I’m side-eyeing the sanctity surrounding motherhood. Maybe I should read more about babies and Korean folklore.
Hospital Playlist was my comfort watch through June and July. I think its wholesomeness and non-plot writing came at a good time for me. But I noticed then that the throughline for all main characters was moral superiority and hence what I then saw as *wholesomeness*. It’s kind of what makes it a grating rewatch in parts. Plus the real life of misogyny of Yoo Yeon Seok makes me want to push his angelic catholic character off a cliff. (For context, i was raised catholic). I want to continue loving Chae Song Hwa, and for that the showrunners need to stop cornering her with overbearing romantic interests (let that woman breathe! she literally ran away to another city!)
Hospital is good at creating moments of comfort, so much so that I went to watch Reply 1988 after it, but had to drop it coz I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’ll come back to it next year.
Once Again is what I call joint family propaganda. What it does well is lay bare the mechanics of living in a society that prizes the heterosexual family structure, the loops you have to jump through to hide when you break its rules and what happens when you are found out. I love the characters, their fights, their frustrations. I just don’t love the validation of joint families. (context: i grew up in an oppressive joint family lol). In my au, Nahee and Gyujin don’t get married again or immediately have children, but take the long route to figuring out how to love the person the other is. Gahee is openly dating Hyo shin and her parents have to figure out how to process her success and her romance. Young dal and Ok boon have to learn to stop dictating their children’s lives.  Joon sun runs his company from home, so his wife Hyun kyung can work on what she wants. Choyeon, Joori and Ga-yeon go back to being flamboyant AF and the market learns to not judge. Gyujin and Jaesok have to actually work on the relationship with their mother and what sent her into depression. Just a lot of learning involved.
Just Between Lovers was a nice watch, i just don’t get how Kang doo and Ha Moon So’s relationship will survive his constantly simmering anger.
Crash Landing on You was so much fun until the main romance turned angsty, but it gave us North Korean soldier shenanigans and the epic romance of Seo Dan and Alberto Gu that we needed more of.
Tale of The Nine Tailed is probably what Goblin wished it was. I, however, will never be over Lee Rang. (Also, when can gods stop meeting their love interests as babies? Asking for my sanity)
I literally ignored everything in Oh My Ghost except Park Bo Young and Kim Seulgi and it was amazing.
NOPE
Goblin, Dinner Mate, Oh My Baby and My Secret Romance were a whole lot of NO, NAHI, ILLAAA.
I loved hate-watching The King:Eternal Monarch with the rest of k drama tumblr but someone please take away Kim Eun-sook’s access to gigantic budgets and all-star casts.
It was painful to watch Do You Like Brahms squander away its potential but I’m glad to be introduced to Park Eun bin. Age of Youth is next on watchlist.
More than Friends to me is only Ahn Eun jin. Someone give her amazing lead roles asap.
Why did Record of Youth do that to Park So Dam and her clothes? Just why
WANTED TO WATCH, BUT COULDN’T BECAUSE *INTENSE*
World Of The Married, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay, Sweet Home, Extracurricular, Penthouse, Flower of Evil, Lie After Lie
WILL WATCH NEXT YEAR
SF8, Stove League, Birth Care Centre but I’ll start the new year with School Nurse Files coz it looks very good.

Heard it through the Grapevine - A Rewatch Ep 1.
Watching Brahms kinda crash and burn for me, made me crave rewatching a drama that has an OTP who manage to make it work and a drama that was funny to boot.
This drama is sadly underrated and doesn’t get as much love as it should! Directed by Ahn Pan Seok ( One Spring Night, Something in the Rain, Secret Love Affair, to name just a few) plus written by the same writer of Secret Love Affair, you get a drama about a pair of young students, children still really, who become parents. The boy is raised by a very status obsessed father and mother in a rich ass household and the girl is from working class, with her family barely making ends meet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Putting the rest behind a cut, because it gets really image heavy.
But Bom is a smart student, which is why she meets Han In Sang at the same College Camp that In Sang goes to. And the drama is smart in skipping the whole “how they get together” part because that’s not the most interesting bit here anyway, so the first time we see them together is in a flashback to said camp, where they had kinda snuck away from the others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the grand tradition of horny teenagers anywhere In Sang doesn’t want to separate from Bom just yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And let’s make it clear, Bom is just as horny, she just has a slightly clearer head, but not for long, because they are almost caught by her roommates and she just manages to pretend to be sleeping before they are caught (after stuffing In Sang into her closet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what was bound to happen, happens. But they separate and don’t meet for months, until the school year is over, and In Sang gets some letters Bom sent him throughout the past few months.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And ahahaha how fucking prescient, because that is essentially what happens with the two of them later on. Spoilers, I guess.
Tumblr media
This shot is just lovely btw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this spurs In Sang along to find Bom again, but her family has moved from her old adress and she quit school, so now he has no way of finding her, so he asks his father’s underlings for help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bom meanwhile is *heavily* pregnant, but while her nature is quiet and not very outgoing, she is assertive enough and won’t put up with much.
In Sang’s dad meanwhile, who had previously espoused the fact that Bullet Points on a resumee don’t matter, it’s what you “fill them up with” that matters, is wooing a very influential former politician and lawperson for his own lawfirm.
But In Sang manages to find out Bom’s address thanks to his Dad’s employees (who are slowly getting integrated into the show’s plot themselves) and makes his way over there.
And well, it goes better than expected? But I gotta say the acting here is exquisite, the slight shift from surprise to realisation and shock on In Sang’s face is just *chefs kiss*
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then completely overwhelmed (and also scared of Bom’s dad who kinda wants to punch him down) he says he’ll take responsibility and marry her. And dad, still angry and kinda snappish says well you better introduce her to your parents then, and so off they go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They take a short break on their drive to talk, which I think is such a smart decision, because they do actually need to talk about what’s happened!! I mean damn. Not everyday you meet your pregnant teenage (ex?)girlfriend...
And I like that the drama addresses the fact that they used protection, but it was either faulty or they were not experienced enough to use it right, which is how this happened. (Also once again emphasising that Bom was very much into what happened that night.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They get some fresh air and Bom uses the bathroom and we cut to the parents who are discussing what kind of wife they should get for In Sang, as if they’re discussing what kind of accessory he should wear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, good lord man, even your wife is like “how are we going to find someone who fits those criteria.” and she was SELECTED by her mother in law. In some ways this definitely has fusion-sageuk-y feels hahaha.
We got back to Bom and In Sang and he’s nowhere to be found and so she wanders around until she sees him, about to climb into the Han River, because he’s a bit of an idiot and probably scared of his parents. In almost every other drama, this would be a scene with somber music, or maybe a sad ballad, but not here, a spunky jazz tune starts playing at we know we are going to see some wacky hijinks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He can’t even do more than dip his toes into it though, because it’s fucking freezing. But Bom sees this, and she is 100% her father’s daughter, because she GOES CHARGING INTO THE FREEZING RIVER.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Sang manages to drag her back out and apologises and the taxi driver is way nicer than I would be, bc he lets their probably still dripping wet selves sit all over his nice leather backseats.
But In Sang takes heart, manages to call his parents and off they go (to their Doom~~).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we see a little of Bom praising In Sang and we see how they do work together. Bom definitely is the one wearing pants in this relationship though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s a wrap for ep 1. I do love the little humor bits this drama manages to put in. Like, a scene where a character ostensibly is trying to commit suicide shouldn’t be able to make me laugh, but it does and that’s how you know the writing, directing and editing is on point.

Hiya Monica! 43 and 54 for the KDrama asks!
Hi AMIANNA :D I’M SO GLAD YOU ASKED THESE QUESTIONS
43. One K-drama you could rewatch over and over?
Well, I already HAVE rewatched Are You Human Too? three times. And yesterday was listening to the soundtrack and realized it is about time to watch it again lol. It is just so GOOD
Plot: Scientist mom loses her son to his evil grandpa and in the depths of her despair she builds herself a robot son. Robot son is the best, kindest, sweetest creature in the world and all he wants to do is hug people who are sad. But GUESS WHAT. Human son grows up in his evil grandpa’s house and he is not exactly ok with his life, but hey at least he has a loyal secretary who tries to keep him out of trouble. Loyal secretary is the bestest most loyal man whose hashtags are #stressed #depressed #well-dressed. Seriously, his nickname to me is Blue, because he wears the most striking blue suit once. It’s great. Oh yeah, also, the more experiences the robot son has, the more he acts like a human. And some of the actual humans he meets are terrible people. So. What DOES it mean to be human? YOU MUST WATCH TO FIND OUT
54. Recommend 3 fluffy AF dramas
Aha. Aha. I have no straight fluff for you. Even the fluffiest kdrama has some angst. Which is just how I like it. However, there are some that are more fluffy overall than others.
--Her Private Life is a fun romance, with my favorite actor Kim Jae Wook (in a very different role than he acts in The Guest, which is an extremely not fluffy kdrama but which is one of my all-time favorites and which I highly highly recommend for the sake of the three main characters, like even if you have to skip through the scary stuff it will be worth it for the scruffy psychic taxi driver, the detective who never gives up and who WILL kick a demon in the face, and the sad, somber, secretly soft priest who is my all-time favorite priest in any media ever)(also these three faves are so SO SOFT AND SWEET WITH KIDS I DIED EVERY TIME THERE WAS AN INTERACTION)(SORRY I STARTED RECOMMENDING THIS SHOW I SHOULD HAVE PUT IT AS ONE OF THE OTHER KDRAMAS I COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN)
oh dear oops I need to actually tell you about HPL. RYAN THE LION GOLD is an ex-artist and the new director of an art museum, and Sung Deok Mi is the best art curator at said museum. Ryan has some sadness in his backstory and Deok Mi has a secret: she is a top fan of a kpop idol, whom she takes pictures of. ThIS ROMANCE IS SO FLUFFY I WANT TO DIE, AND THE BITS OF ANGST ONLY MAKE THE FLUFF ALL THE SWEETER
--Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is pretty fluffy. Do Bong Soon, a tiny young woman with super powered strength, becomes the bodyguard of the extremely rich, extremely extra and hot CEO of a gaming company. Their romance is very cute. I don’t like all the side characters and frankly there is a gangster side plot that could have been cut at no loss, but I would do anything for Ahn Min Hyuk, the CEO (played by Park Hyung Sik, whose only benefit to being in the military right now and having a military haircut is that it is very easy to see his adorably cute lil ear)
--It’s after midnight and I am blanking, but I guess you could say Are You Human Too? has a lot of fluff. It has so much fluff. but also pain. but then more fluff......and then pain.
Oh ok, this is a cdrama rather than a kdrama, but Accidentally in Love. It is cute, and cheesier than brie, and sometimes I shake my head at the characters or the storyline, because it is slightly unbelievable or needs further development, but even through all this, the show was just light-hearted and made me laugh.  Basically, it’s about an heiress who disguises herself at university to escape marriage, and the famous singer who also goes to school there. The romance is cute if not ground-breaking, and I enjoyed the other characters, especially the singer’s pure-hearted, self-sacrificing best bro, the bad boy who has a beef with the singer, the bad girl who needs to get a grip, and a few others. It made me happy when I was sad, and so I love it

Some of my Favourite K-Dramas this Season
This holiday season was spent mainly bingeing K-Dramas and I’ve been having the best time. Here’s a list of some of the dramas I’m watching now and why I am loving them all.
1. Chocolate
Tumblr media
Firstly, I love Ha Ji Won (actress in the gif above) so I was already sold when I found this drama on Netflix. This drama is so lovely and the characters are also lovable. I especially love Cha Young because she is the kindest and even with all the hardships she’s experienced in life, she continues on with a smile one her face.
It’s impossible not to fall in love with her after watching her and it shows with the way Kang also falls in love with her. Although I usually try to avoid from sad and emotional dramas, as they can be suffocating I can’t stay away from this one. While it’s sad, it’s endearing to see how the characters experience life and death, it’s kind of bittersweet as life tends to be. And of course the food on this drama has my mouth watering for days, I advise you to not watch on an empty stomach. This drama is sweet (like chocolate) and I diligently await the rest of the episodes.
2. Psychopath Diary
Tumblr media
Again, I love the actor Yoon Shi Yoon so I was immediately interested when I saw the trailer. I was pleasantly surprised at how funny this drama turned out to be. It has made me laugh in ways I did not know I could - if you walked by while I was watching this drama you would have been shocked to hear the laughter coming from me. I think that’s what makes this drama amazing as they’re injecting comic relief into grave ideas and situations that involves a psychopath and murders. This is done well because of how ridiculous and even impossible this case is where Yook Dong Shik believes he is a psychopath after reading the diary of a psychopath. As there are only a few episodes now, I am anxiously anticipating how this drama will end though it is easy to guess at. Also, only Yoon Shi Yoon could pull of Yook Dong Shik’s character and he does it impressively. I have been thoroughly entertained throughout.
3. VIP
Tumblr media
While this drama has now ended, I enjoyed watching it. The acting is great and you really get to feel just as angry and frustrated as Na Jung Sun as she navigates work life and news of the affair. I was with her all the way and I think the drama does a great job of following the characters closely to see how each deals with their own problems. And it also teaches that judging someone based on how they seem is never fair or the whole story. It ended well, I’m glad with how they delivered with the characters and how they deal with their issues in a realistic manner. It definitely was a thrilling and emotional rollercoaster of a watch.
4. Love with Flaws
Tumblr media Tumblr media
May Cha In Ha (Lee Jae Ho) rest in peace and my condolences to his family. I love his character in this drama. This drama at the moment is my favourite. It hurts to wait each week for new episodes because I’ve been having the besting watching it. This is another drama that makes me laugh a lot. The characters are all lovable and they all have their own distinctive colours. The two main male and female leads are the best, I love how they are so kind and cute. Ahn Jae Hyun’s character is especially cute because his personality is so different from his appearance which is quite charming, I am constantly smiling and laughing at how cute he is. It’s amazing how even with all his growth he still remains the cute little boy who was rejected by Joo See Yeon.
And I was struck by how kind and caring Joo Seo Yeon is despite her fierce personality. It’s great to see that there is a storyline that focuses on gay relationships (it’s not everyday straight relationships) and is addressed in the drama. Overall, I feel like I’ll go back and rewatch this drama because I’ve had the best time watching it and I would recommend it repeatedly because there’s so much cuteness and laughter to experience and witness. The writer has done a great job of colouring the characters with real elements of flaws and strengths. Again RIP Cha In Ha (Lee Jae Ho) much love and blessings to you.

devlog # 9 // life updates + new systems (UI, character stats, turn-based system)
so, I’ve been away for what feels like a year - there are a million things I could share.  first, let me update you on life things, then tell you a bit about what I’ve worked on in-game. as far as life things, I have been t i r e d.  and with autumn (my favorite season) here, the desire to cuddle and sleep all day is strong.
Tumblr media
part of what’s been keeping me so tired is also that I both started uni studies and have a new job.  in the last blog, I mentioned I was thinking of going to university for further studies in computer science and all.  well, thanks to a few people’s generosity (and many, many phone calls, emails, etc), I did get signed up in time!  I have been absolutely in love with the things I’ve been learning in my first computer science class ever; even though it teaches Java, I have found that everything I’m learning is very easy to translate into C# and what I’m building in Unity.  each day, I feel more confident in my coding, so much so that nearly everything I’ve done in the past month has been entirely from my mind, just free-coding, without any tutorial or other guidance.  it is really amazing to feel like I can code up a system in my mind, even when I am away from a computer, and then sit down and type it out and it run exactly as I intended. while my studies and my new job (not especially difficult, but asks but for many hours each week; consider supporting me on Patreon so I don’t need to work as much?) keep me busy and often fatigued, I have been reclaiming time to code things I love and am really excited about - and I’d like to share with you a couple of things I’ve recently built. (edit: I just realised that a lot of the images are blurry :( will think on a fix for this)
Tumblr media
where we left off with the last devlog, I was working a lot on the systems to build up the physical world: tile generation, interactables, biomes, and the like.  I did actually work on some other parts of the world and visuals (will share that in a near future devlog!), but more and more lately, I’ve been feeling like what will really keep me excited and focused, to feel like I’ve reached a solid checkpoint in my development, is being able to actually *play* the game.  even if it’s repetitive, only one area, or without animations, being able to press play and move characters around and interact is something I know will excite me.  so, that’s what I’ve been working towards. there are a handful of pieces I can identify between where the game was last devlog and what it needs to be minimally playable: - a basic UI that shows character stats - a system to calculate and update the stats to be displayed - a system to keep track of turns automatically - for the UI or world to display player choices accurately - at least a couple interactive actions the player can take, besides moving (damaging health, defending, etc) I started with making a basic character stat UI and a behind-the-scenes calculator. note: since we’re working mainly on systems in this devlog, I’m going to be sharing a lot of code talk.  but maybe you’re into that sort of thing.  also remember that my focus in each of these pieces is not to make something gorgeous or especially well-organised; my focus is to make something that works (though I am always thinking about optimisation and other possible patterns along the way).
so, this is what the first UI for character stats looks like!  I modeled this as a basic idea of how you might make a UI for creating a character and being able to preview their stats - both the base ones (like might and agility) and also a few of the compound ones (health, stamina, mana).
Tumblr media
in this version, a player can choose an inheritance (what other games call “race”), a birth sign, and a primary class (though you won’t be able to choose it from the start like this in the game).  each of these choices contributes modifiers which change the stats, which is calculated altogether when you press the left or right buttons.  (again, these are not all the inheritances, signs, or classes in the game)
here’s a bit of the magick code that makes this happen:
Tumblr media
as you can (hopefully?) see, I’m calling methods (CalculateClassValueMIT, etc) to get the relevant stat values and multiplying those against a magic number (eep!) and the character’s inheritance scaling.  what you might you also notice here is that these calculations are hard-coded to a given attribute (might, dexterity, intellect, etc); along with MIT, each of the other five attributes has its own calculation method.  I really hate this because I know there has to be another way to do it, but this is the way I know how to do so far - feel free to message me other patterns! (for example, I’ve seen people make a Stat class, but I don’t really get that yet?) then, while I was feeling a bit playful with UI and stats, I thought I would spend a day making a prototype of a “charisma interaction” system.  by this, I mean that - in the game - characters will be able to use their interpersonal skills to be able to navigate certain quests, get more information, and the like.  charisma pairs with each of the other attributes to give a certain way of interacting; for example, charisma and might could be interpreted as aggression, intimidation, using one’s size or boldness to gain favor.  pairing charisma with will could render an interaction more focused on relating, understanding, and empathising.  you can see some of might interaction here.
Tumblr media
what’s shown in this is that Joseph, the unit kind enough to help with our testing, responds to your might interaction attempt with various phrases.  behind the scenes, Joseph has their own inheritance, signs, and other traits, and when you click, these + a random roll are used to calculate *how* Joseph responds.  in this case, Joseph has a primary sign of Aries, which inclines them to respond well to your might-based attempts (you’re in luck!).  even when Joseph declines your attempts or chooses to stop talking about a subject (just wait some days for them to open up again), they will tell you that they mostly like how you’ve approached them, even if it didn’t work this time - a character with Virgo as a primary sign, however, might tell you off on your first attempt and refuse to interact further with you. rather than just a few pre-programmed dialogues, I am interested in the game having a more procedural, somewhat organic feel.  also, in the actual game, Joseph will have slightly less patience; you won’t be able to keep clicking, only able to make an attempt twice in a day before the character closes that interaction. while the gif above shows many of the responses and reveal that there are just a handful of phrases this character will use, a player won’t see these in succession like this, so hopefully, the organic, personal feeling will be maintained.  and again, in the future, I intend to make this more complex, not just button pressing. here’s some of the behind the scenes to how the aries sign is built.  each sign is a scriptable object with these same parameters.
Tumblr media
the basics of how a sentence is formed:
Tumblr media
and what happens when you press the MIT button:
Tumblr media
and the last thing to share today is about the turn-based system.  I knew this was an important step in moving us closer to a playable version of the game.
take a look, and then I’ll explain.
Tumblr media
feel free to rewatch a few times, since there’s a lot to notice.
first, I approached this system by defining exactly what makes up a turn.  during a turn, the player will have four basic opportunities for choices: a first movement, an action, a secondary action (if the first was a half-action), and a second movement (if the character has any remaining movement).  these are the phases that the character sees and directly interacts with. then, beyond/around that, each turn also needs to initialise a player and update any status effects (status phase), figure out who’s next and adjust each character’s place in the list (priority phase), and see if the battle conditions have been met or if a next turn is needed (check phase).
Tumblr media
here’s a closer look at some of the phases in code:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the basic setup is that the player interacts by pressing buttons when their input is needed, then the code moves through the phases depending on numerous factors: if the player used up all their movement, if they have action remaining, if they have a status (sleep? paralysed?) that will skip their turn, which phase it is currently ..
Tumblr media
I have seen other approaches to coding a state machine (which I guess is what this is?) that I didn’t understand very much at all, and I am excited about this code because I know it came from me and all the things I’ve learned over my short time coding.  importantly, i am excited because it works.
whew.
Tumblr media
so, what’s next?
well, I’ve built these systems solo (separate from the rest of the game systems) so that I could really polish them (as much as one polishes prototypes :p) before moving them into the fray. so, a next step is to integrate both the stat UI and the turn-based system into the rest.  to make it so that a player can pull up a fuller UI with a key press.  to show a constant UI indicating which units are involved in an interaction, maybe with some predictive stats (chance of hit).  and to have the player’s “movement button press” actually be them choosing which tile to move to, calculating automatically if that is their full movement range, and a much prettier (radial?) UI for selecting actions .. let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  one thing at a time.  I will keep working at it, with my plan being to get a workable version running this weekend, so maybe check back soon. and if you’d like to support me or get some behind the scene insights or help with building your game, do check out my Patreon - I would love for you to join my party: patreon.com/ahnmakes ✨✨ otherwise, I’ll see you in the next devlog! with love and need for a long, long sleep, ahn

MTVS Epic Rewatch #198
BTVS 7x14 First Date
Stray thoughts
1) I really don’t think Snyder would’ve gotten such a huge… oh, wait. Inferiority complex. Yep. He totally would.
Tumblr media
2) I really don’t understand why Giles is so upset about Buffy having Spike’s chip removed? Like, he worked alongside Angel when he had a soul and not once did he show concern about Angel attacking them or going on a killing spree. Moreover, the chip had proven to be useless if Spike was under the influence of The First, so whether he had it or not was kind of a moot point at the moment.
Oh. I think maybe Giles was upset that Buffy didn’t check with him first. Like, how dare she make such an important decision without asking for my opinion?
3) Chao-Ahn is hands down my favorite potential. There’s no contest, really.
Tumblr media
4) How convenient…
GILES I have to ask—why on Earth did you make that decision?
BUFFY Guess it was instinct, like you were talking about.
GILES I made that up!
5) It’s ironic that Giles accuses Buffy of letting her feelings cloud her judgment because I think that’s exactly what he was doing. Giles despised Spike, and I don’t blame him, he had reason to. But he was letting his hatred of Spike get in the way of seeing the bigger picture: if the First wanted Spike dead, then they should guard him at all costs because he might be a key player in defeating The First – as he rather obviously turned out to be…
GILES Buffy, I want more for you. Your feelings for him are coloring your judgment. I can hear it in your voice.
I’m not saying that Buffy’s feelings for Spike weren’t influencing her decision-making because they obviously were. But… Buffy’s emotions had always been her strength, her emotions are what drive her instinct, and the fact that she didn’t voice a logical reason to explain her choices doesn’t mean that they were wrong.
6) This is so me as a teacher...
PRINCIPAL WOOD Um, what're you doing tonight?
BUFFY Preparing for tomorrow's counseling sessions.
PRINCIPAL WOOD No, really.
BUFFY Watching a reality show about a millionaire.
7) Why would he keep his knife collection at the school, though? Doesn’t make any sense!
Tumblr media
8) ICONIC!!
BUFFY You know, it's not even that he's acting that suspicious. It's just—there he is. On the hell mouth. All day, every day. That's got to be like being showered with evil. Only from underneath.
WILLOW Not really a shower.
Tumblr media
9) That’s a clumsy way of admitting you once were…
WILLOW Right. Help you move on.
BUFFY Why does everybody in this house think I'm still in love with Spike?
10) I genuinely had to stop watching to laugh for a solid minute after this…
GILES Yes, and the language barrier is formidable. I was concerned that my Mandarin is a little thin, but as it turns out, she speaks Cantonese, which is thinner. But we muddled through, and, as I suspected, ice cream is a universal language.
Tumblr media
BUFFY What'd she say?
GILES She's grateful to be in the land of plenty.
11) Oh, the double standards…
ANDREW  Um, I follow Buffy's orders now. I'm redeeming myself for... killing you... I mean, for... killing Jonathan.
JONATHAN/FIRST Really, why? So you can earn a spot on her little pep squad? You think she'll ever let you in? You're a murderer.
ANDREW Confidentially, a lot of her people are murderers. Anya and Willow and Spike.
JONATHAN/FIRST Interesting. And you're the only one she makes seek redemption. Does that seem fair to you?
You forgot Giles on that list, Andrew.
12) I love the little callback to Conversations with Dead People…
BUFFY Well, it is unclear. That's why I chose a top that says, you know, I'm comfortable in a stodgy office or a swinging casual setting—or killing you, you know, if you're a demon.
ANYA It also says I sometimes get blood on my shoulder. Or it might be pizza. I don't think I can fix it.
13) Such a great delivery on Emma’s part here…
ANYA And I wasn't talking about your date anyway. I was talking about this sham date of Xander's. I think it's part of a plan to make me jealous.
BUFFY Well, it's not working.
ANYA Are you nuts? Of course it's working. Observe my bitter ranting. Hear the shrill edge of hysteria in my voice!
14) Oh, but he does care…
SPIKE Heard you got a date.
BUFFY Well, it's unclear. I mean, I have this whole theory about a promotion. Or he's evil.
SPIKE Buffy, I'm all right.
BUFFY You don't have to—
SPIKE What? Be noble? I'm not. Really, I'm all right. Think I still dream of a crypt for two with a white picket fence? My eyes are clear.
Tumblr media
15) Oh, Xander, you’re still the same awkward dork you were seven seasons ago…
XANDER I'm just glad you're here. You're gonna love the coffee. Got myself a redeye—it's black coffee with a shot of espresso. It's kinda rough if you're not used to that sort of thing—
LISSA It's hot cocoa.
XANDER Well, sometimes I don't sleep too good.
16) ICONIC! So glad to see Giles’s gory doodles back, I fucking love them.
ANYA Giles made them for Chao-Ahn, and now she's locked herself in the bathroom. There’re other girls upstairs, and they're starting to complain.
GILES Those are flashcards. I made them to facilitate her training. Chao-Ahn never had a watcher. The language problem...
WILLOW You showed her these?
GILES I wanted her to understand the seriousness of her situation.
DAWN Holy crap!
Tumblr media
17) Well, excuse you, Giles, but if I knew the world was going to end, I’d like to get laid. And seeing your flashcards is all the more reason to.
GILES For God's sake! How can anyone think about their social life? We are about to fight the original primal evil. These girls are in mortal danger. Didn't you see the flashcards? This isn't right.
18) I wonder why Xander doesn’t quite disclose exactly what was that he did to Anya… could it be that he knows is way worse than “bad” and he doesn’t want to seem like a douche in front of the girl he’s flirting with? I’ve said it before, I don’t necessarily disagree with Xander’s decision not to get married – although he truly picked the second to worst possible moment to do it. That being said, if you did the deed, own up to it, call it for what it was – you left your girlfriend at the altar.
19) It’s nice to hear Robin’s “origin” story, so to speak, but I felt the scene was lacking emotion and gravity. This was kind of a big revelation as far as the Slayer lore goes, you know? But it’s a scene that just goes under the radar.
Anyway, I also feel it would be very unlikely for Robin not to know Spike was the vampire that killed his mother before coming to Sunnydale. He says he was raised by a watcher, and we know there were written records about the Fanged Four. Plus, we know how Spike loved to brag, so if he truly tried to track him down, he would’ve found him.
20)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
21) I still don’t see why they would take ANYTHING the First said at face value! Like, Giles hears this…
SPIKE Why did it appear to this one, then? I thought it was supposed to be pulling my strings.
ANDREW It said it wasn't time for you yet.
…and you can see that he’s thinking: “I’m right, he’s a danger to us all, we have to get rid of him immediately!”
But why would The First disclose its real intentions to any of them, especially the ones it’s trying to manipulate?
It’s just so dumb that they couldn’t read the First’s intentions properly, especially Giles of all people, it annoys me.
22) I find this moment really funny, but when exactly did Xander manage to send the bat signal? Or did he send the “I just got lucky” signal and thankfully they interpreted it wrong?
WILLOW No, it's a text message. Oh, it's from Xander. It's one of our signals.
AMANDA Signals?
WILLOW Yeah, the system we set up a while back. Like codes. Uh, this one's either "I just got lucky, don't call me for a while" or "my date's a demon who's trying to kill me."
KENNEDY You don't remember which?
WILLOW It was a long time ago.
DAWN Well, if we play the percentages...
GILES Something's eating Xander's head.
23) #awkward
Tumblr media Tumblr media
24) And how annoying is it that Robin keeps LOOKING at Spike in the rear-view mirror? You’re not supposed to see anything in the mirror because he’s a vampire, ya mook! And if you happen to look in the mirror and not see someone who should be there, don’t you think you’d go “ooh”?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(btw, before anyone suggests this, he's not pretending he doesn’t know because later on when they’re fighting, Spike turns, and he goes: “you’re a vampire” all surprised!)
25) All you need to know about this scene, you’ll find it here.
Tumblr media
26) This scene is glorious!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
27) This is probably one of my favorite whole-gang dialogues in the show.
WILLOW What happened?
XANDER What do you think happened? Another demon woman was attracted to me. I'm going gay. I've decided I'm turning gay. Willow, gay me up. Come on, let's gay.
WILLOW What?
XANDER You heard me. Just tell me what to do. I'm mentally undressing Scott Bakula right now. That's a start, isn't it?
ANDREW Captain Archer...
XANDER Come on, let's get this gay show on the gay road. Help me out here.
BUFFY What if you just start attracting male demons?
DAWN Clem always liked you.
ANYA It would serve you right.
GILES Children, enough.
XANDER I'd need some stylish new clothes.
28) I think Giles’ speech would’ve resonated better if he hadn’t picked up the flashcards again, I mean, come on…
Tumblr media
But in all seriousness, I get that he wants them to focus and he might have a good point that they seem to be distracted with trifles. But… don’t you think they needed that? Don’t you think amidst all the death and danger and apocalypses they’d want to have at least some crumbs of normalcy? Don’t you think that’s what has kept them sane and helped them plow through it all?
But let’s keep this reaction in mind for future episodes, okay? Let’s try and remember how Giles’s speech might have affected Buffy and the way she handled herself as a leader moving forward, okay?
29) I’m just going to leave this here…
SPIKE It, uh, it talked to the little boy. Said it wasn't time for me yet. I should move out. Leave town before it is time for me.
BUFFY No, you have to stay.
SPIKE You've got another demon fighter now.
BUFFY That's not why I need you here.
SPIKE Is that right? Why's that then?
BUFFY 'Cause I'm not ready for you to not be here.
30) This woman is just… stunningly beautiful.
Tumblr media
31) Again, why would you believe whatever the ultimate evil has to tell you? I mean, this time, it was the truth, but Robin had no way of knowing that, and he immediately believes it? Everyone’s so dumb, it makes me angry.
32) I should probably re-read my recaps and figure out exactly when I started to get so pissed because I think I’m becoming angrier and angrier at the characters with each episode that I rewatch and I’m not even on Empty Places yet. I dread that moment.
33) If you’ve got this far, thank you for reading! If you enjoy my recaps and my blog, please consider supporting it on ko-fi. Thanks!

Latest story from https://movietvtechgeeks.com/supernatural-family-feud-crowleys-son-lucifers-baby-mary/
'Supernatural' Family Feud for Crowley's son, Lucifer's baby and Mary
Once I learned that Gavin MacLeod – played by Theo Devaney – was in Family Feud, I knew this episode of Supernatural was going to be interesting. We last saw Gavin almost a full three years ago – back in 2014 and Season 9, when he was brought to the current century to be a pawn for Abaddon. However, I do have to say I was a bit disappointed with regard to the “ghost ship” rumor – I was looking for something like the Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean – but alas – we have a ghost from The Star, the ship that Gavin was originally supposed to sail to the New World. Anyhow, Sam and Dean have caught a case – a bunch of teachers – and those who take care of children – are being killed, their tongue ripped out and/or their insides, well, smooshed. The first scene after the now/then, with the teacher in her bedroom, was very old-school horror film. The music, especially when the teacher is going into her closet, was absolutely spot on – gave me chills, especially when she turns the light on to find nothing there. I noticed the locket by the picture frame in my second watch of the episode – I wonder if the teacher picked it up on purpose? Mary Winchester’s (played by Samantha Smith) appearance in this episode definitely answered a few questions for me. In my opinion, Mary has – and for the time being, will always be – a hunter first. I truly think she’s learning how to be a mother as she goes; and unlike most mothers, she doesn’t have her children’s formative years to get it down pat. We see her and Mr. Ketch in a parking garage (I’m guessing this is the garage that David Haydn-Jones was mentioning, when he said that he had been filming in extremely cold weather – so cold you could see his breath), with Mary “fighting” a Rugaru and Mr. Ketch timing her. Mary uses some sort of subsonic gun to fight the Rugaru, and her comment is, “Nice toy.” Toys seem to be a common theme with the British Men of Letters, as the last episode highlighted, “The toys are the fun part …” I’m definitely thinking there’s more than just toys as to why Mary remains interested in the BMOL though. What stuck in my head was Mr. Ketch’s line to Mary: “You’re an excellent liar …” Again, in the second rewatch, since I was watching for it, I noticed Mary’s change of demeanor when talking to Dean. Her voice softened – although I disagree with Mr. Ketch’s comment later on in the episode, that softer means weaker – and her tone of voice was more carefree. I don’t find it surprising that Mary is such a good liar; after all, we already know that she was hunting after Dean was born, and probably after Sam was too … at the time, John Winchester would have known nothing about the hunting life, so lying had become quite habitual for Mary, I believe. The other thing I found interesting in this scene was Mr. Ketch’s offer of a drink. It seems obvious to me that our writers are perhaps trying to play matchmaker with regard to Mr. Ketch and Mary – a match made in Heaven, I’m sure not, but a match all the same? Perhaps … The following scene, with our beloved Luci – Mark Pellegrino – had me grinning. I like Mark as Luci. Yes, all the others – especially Misha – did an excellent job of portraying the Morning Star. However, Lucifer will always be Mark to me – and I’m sure to others as well. I have to give props kudos in this case. I love those chains – most specifically the skull and crossbones lock – classy! And we now know that Lucifer wasn’t sent to the cage (as is obvious from the last episode) … and how Crowley pulled it off. Crowley wasn’t satisfied with having Lucifer just sent to the cage – he wanted to humiliate Lucifer, as much as Lucifer humiliated him … which makes sense. We then move on to Sam and Dean in Baby. I absolutely adore these scenes – they’re usually jam packed with emotion, and this one is no different. In this scene, Sam and Dean are discussing Mary’s pass on the hunt with the boys – Sam, as usual, is so completely trusting. “It’s a grind,” he says, regarding the hunting life … and that Mary just needs time. Whereas Dean – he’s not trusting at all. “Something’s up,” he says. And as we find out, he was right. The next scene, with the faux cub leader in the bathroom, had some superb CGI … the water in the tap freezing all the way up to the faucet? Awesome job! I commend you. Who knew being klutzy could be so dang appealing? I’m talking about Dean’s fumbling with the knife in the museum, of course. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Supernatural had some sort of Aztec beastie in the works … knowing our show’s track record. And then we get to the nitty-gritty, where Sam is talking about the Star and its information … “I know something about something,” says Dean. Of course, you do, Dean. But it’s nice to see the eldest of our boys show their knowledge – normally it’s Sam that’s the fountain of, well, knowledge. So the Star is originally from Leith, Scotland. I found that quite interesting – as the Lethe is actually a river in the underworld – the river of forgetting, basically. When one dies, one must seek passage across the river Lethe – I wonder if there’s a connotation there somewhere? Considering this is Supernatural, and most everything has a meaning, it wouldn’t surprise me. I must dedicate a single paragraph to the absolutely delicious scene with Sam, Dean and Rowena, where the boys are trying to convince Rowena to help them find Gavin. My. That grin of Jared’s? Wow. That’s what gets me every time. Sam has the loveliest smirkiest (and yes, I know that’s not a word) grin … now that I’ve watched the episode a couple of times, I’ve figured out that what the boys are offering Rowena is a chance to get back at Crowley for the entire Oscar thing. But anyway … We see the lovely Kelly Kline once again, as angels are (apparently) trying to kill her … and we meet Dagon, played by Ali Ahn. I like Dagon. No really, I do – she makes sense, in the case that she’s trying to save Kelly’s son – aka “Lucifer’s spawn” – plus, you gotta love a strong female character. Her line – “Come with me if you want to live” – is most often quoted from Terminator (reference, Google) … so as usual, Supernatural plays to the well-known clichés, in a very classy way. Awesome. Dagon convinces Kelly that she’s on her – and Kelly’s son’s – side – one of my favourite lines from this episode has to be: “Titles. Labels. You’re Rosemary, complete with baby.” I love how Supernatural references pop culture, but it never seems to be forced … In the scene where Gavin, the boys and Rowena are looking at the wreckage of the Star – I again, have to point out that Supernatural loves to point out where it’s been – and perhaps where it’s going to be? I’m sure that Gavin’s mention of the “hook” is a direct reference to Episode 7 of the first season – Hook Man – I mean, what else could it be? I also find Rowena’s “consoling” of Gavin when he figures out that the love of his life – Fiona – more than likely went down with the ship very apropos. I do really think that Rowena is trying to be more human, and more caring – whether she’s conscious of it or not. (At this point in the episode I also had to deal with my husband’s Shrek imitation, but that’s beside the point.) I absolutely adore the scenery in the next scene, with all the snow. Vancouver sure is pretty when it’s cloaked in a mantle of pure white! It seemed appropriate with Mr. Ketch and Mary’s topic of conversation, as well – Mr. Ketch seems determined to prove to Mary that she’s a hunter at heart (“When you’re in the thick of it, blood in the air …”) and Mary is just as determined to prove that she’s a mother with her family’s interests at heart … hmm. That’ll be very interesting to see how that plays out. One thing I noticed in the scene with the two teachers, where the ghost – Fiona – has started to appear – was the mirror that frosts over. Underneath is a little plaque that says, “Student of the year.” Does that mean whoever is standing in front of the mirror gets that accreditation? Who knows, just something I noticed. The next scene – with Sam, Dean, Rowena, Gavin – and eventually Crowley – was beautifully done. I really do think Rowena is starting to change; her comment: “He’s not like us. He believes in things.” – that really hit me hard. I think Rowena is desperately trying to keep her outer shell of hating everything else around her, and of being jealous of what everyone else has – but deep down, I truly believe she’s changing. My next notes are quite interesting. I’ll write what I originally jotted down – and then explain. Dean: fascinated Sam: relieved Sam: childish grin Sam: concerned Dean: distressed Can you guess what I’m talking about? Dean: fascinated; and Sam: relieved are when the boys send Gavin back to, well, back to history, I guess. This is my theory; I think Dean is just plain fascinated when Gavin and Fiona are sent back in time; because I don’t think he’s been in love. Whereas Sam is relieved; he’s seen love before, and he knows that everything’s going to turn out okay. Sam’s childish grin? That’s when Mary walks down the steps in the bunker, and he’s just pleased as punch to see his mom again. Sam looking concerned; well, that’s when Mary says that she’s been hunting – Rugarus, nonetheless. And Dean? Well, Dean just looks distressed because yup, he was right, there was something going on with Mom … Sam doesn’t believe, really, what he’s hearing … and Dean, well, it really looks like a lightbulb has gone off … it all makes sense, now. The look on Sam’s face when Mary says she’s been working with the BMOL speaks volumes. What I got was this: “Do you really know what we went through?” Mary already knows the basics; that the boys, especially Sam, were tortured by the BMOL … but yet, she still works for them? I kind of get it – but I don’t agree with it. Sorry. My favourite exchange of the entire episode? “Do not give me the face.” ~ Mary “What face?” ~ Dean “You know the face.” ~ Mary “There is no face.” ~ Dean “That’s the face!” ~ Mary And we all love Dean’s face. But of course, we cannot forget Jared’s single line that struck me: “For obvious reasons … like broken ribs and burned feet … we don’t trust the Brits.” I personally think that for the simple reason that the boys don’t trust the Brits – much less the fact that the BMOL tortured our boys – Mary should quit the BMOL. But then, we would be without the wonderful and charming David Haydn-Jones, and that wouldn’t be great either … All in all, this was a pretty interesting episode. We’ve got a few hints and tidbits about Mary’s storyline – she’s had her nose rubbed in the fact that she’s a hunter through and through, and she finally “comes clean” with her boys (mostly, they still don’t know that she stole the Colt); we meet Dagon, the Prince(ss) of Hell, who has taken an interest in Kelly Kline and her son; and we finally close the book (perhaps?) on Gavin, who was sent back to his original time. I’d be interested to find out what Gavin’s been doing in the three years that he’s been in the 20th century … Next weeks Supernatural 1214 is The Raid, so check out the preview above.

2)   Don’t you just love it when your OTP do stuff together?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3)
BUFFY: I am not telling my friends about us. SPIKE: Right, I'll just be dropping him down to you then. BUFFY: You wanna tell them so badly? Go ahead. You know why? I tried to kill my friends, my sister, last week... and guess how much they hate me. Zero. Zero much. So I'm thinking, sleeping with you? They'll deal.
And yet, she wouldn’t come clean... I don’t think she was afraid they’d hate her. I think she feared they’d shame her and judge her, much like Xander did by the end of the episode. And at the same time, I think in a way Buffy wanted Spike to be her thing, even if they weren’t really together and they weren’t having sex anymore.
4) I love this vamp’s WTF reaction so much!
SPIKE: In that case, why won't you sleep with me again?
Tumblr media
5)   I thought country was the music of pain, Xander.
Tumblr media
Also, what’s up with that pinky? You’re drinking beer, dude, it’s not the 5 o’clock tea with Cheryl and the gals at the country club.
6)   It’s really cute to watch Willow and Tara be all flirty and cute like in the beginning.
WILLOW: We should have some coffee some time. Uh, maybe some day... this week after class? TARA:  I'm free tomorrow. WILLOW: Uh, you could, you could bring your friend. TARA: I wasn't gonna - I mean, if you have a friend- WILLOW: No!  I'm, oh, I-I'm friendless. TARA: Yeah, yeah, no friends. I mean, I have friends- WILLOW: Right, many dear friends, yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7)  At least Buffy and Dawn are spending time together, right?
BUFFY:  You stole a toothbrush. DAWN: A mother-of-pearl handle. Very fancy. BUFFY: Yeah, but you stole a toothbrush. As far as rebellious teenagers go, you're kinda square. DAWN: Dental hygiene is important. BUFFY: Guess this was kind of a lame sisters' day out, huh? I make up for trying to kill you by taking you to places you can't go in. DAWN: No, it's my bad. I'm the one that got caught taking stuff.
8)
JONATHAN: If something goes wrong, it's gonna surge... and we'll be deader than an ex-girlfriend. WARREN: What did you say? JONATHAN: Just let me work! WARREN: All right. All right, you do what you need to do. You get us to the goods, and then watch out! It'll gonna be like... it'll be like the whole world just spread open and gave it up for you, man.
JONATHAN: And then we're done, right? We each take our share and we call it a day.
WARREN: You that ready to get rid of us? Huh? Don't worry. We pull this off, you can go buy any tropical island you want. Aw, cheer up, Short Round. You're about to get us everything we ever wanted.
Like, I appreciate that Jonathan hasn’t forgotten they murdered Katrina, but it’s still not good enough. Just feeling kind of bad about committing murder is still not good enough. Reluctantly continuing to help your ex-friends to commit more crimes is still not good enough. I mean, he is the only one in the trio with half a conscience, so there’s that. But like I said, it’s not good enough.
9)   Oh, God, I’m just noticing this…
XANDER: I know there's nothing that I can say or do to make up for what I did. I can't. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I'm like, 'oh god, is this my life? Was that me?' ANYA:  Me too.
Anya agrees but they are both talking about two whole different levels of “was that really me?” Even though they are both expressing regrets over their past actions, Xander is merely talking about how he’s still second-guessing his decision to cancel the wedding at the last minute and leave her at the altar, while it’s easy to tell Anya’s regrets are quite different. It feels as though she’s having trouble going back to being a vengeance demon. It was an impulse decision, and she made it only because in the heat of the moment she wanted to exact her revenge on Xander and on Xander alone. But she’s been back on the vengeance business for two weeks, which means that while she waited to get to Xander, she probably had to do her duty and kill and torture others. Anya probably thought she’d find joy in vengeance again, as she once did. But she’s not the same person/demon.
10) The saddest part is that had Xander asked her to pick up where they’d left off and get married, she would’ve done it in a heartbeat – her pain, heartbreak, and humiliation would have been forgotten in a second. She looks so hopeful when he starts to apologize.
11) And I get Xander, he shouldn’t do anything he doesn’t feel ready for. But the timing was so, so wrong. And the damage was done.
ANYA: Do you still want to get married? ...Oh.
XANDER: Ahn, it's a very complicated question. ANYA: No, actually, it's really not. It's kind of an either-or deal. Do you want to get married? XANDER: Someday, yes, very much. When we're ready. I don't want you to take this as a bad thing. It's good. I love you, I love you so much, I'm just trying to be honest with you. ANYA: Yes, honesty *now*. Congratulations, Xander, on being honest now. I wonder what the medal will say.
12) Again with the impulse decisions...
ANYA: And I wish you were never born!
XANDER: I know this is all coming out wrong.
ANYA: I wish you felt the pain of a thousand searing pokers boiling your heart in its own juices! XANDER: I know, honey. I totally deserve that. ANYA: I... I wish you had tentacles where your beady eyes should be! I wish your intestines were tied in knots and ripped apart inside your lousy gut! XANDER: They are. ANYA: Really?
But.. how would she have felt if her wish had actually come tue? I think she would’ve regretted instantly.
13)
ANYA: What's wrong with me? XANDER: No, honey, it's not you, it's me.
Tumblr media
14) My baby is all grown!
DAWN: No, you're not, it's not that, it's just... what if, instead of you hanging out with me? Maybe I could hang out with you. Why don't I come patrolling with you tonight?
BUFFY: Oh. And then? Maybe we can invite over some strangers and ask them to feed you candy. DAWN: Well, you guys went out patrolling every night when you were my age. BUFFY: True... but technically, you're one-and-a-half. See, I thought a little levity might ... but okay, also no.
DAWN: I just... I just think I could help. BUFFY: I'm sure you could. But it's a little more dangerous than I had in mind. DAWN: But- BUFFY: Dawn, I work very hard to keep you away from that stuff. Okay, I don't want you around dangerous things that can kill you. DAWN: Which would be a perfectly reasonable argument, if my sister was chosen to protect the world from tax audits? But, see, my sister is you, and... dangerous things that want to kill me seem to find me. BUFFY: But you don't need to go looking for them.
But she does need to be prepared in case something happens. Buffy was so concerned with keeping Dawn safe that she was making her helpless. I agree, Dawn shouldn’t go looking for danger, but they were always in danger whether they go looking for it or not. And by sheltering Dawn so much, Buffy was making her so much more vulnerable to any dangers she might encounter. I get that Buffy was probably trying to give Dawn the kind of normal life she never got to have, but even though Dawn hadn’t been burdened with a sacred duty, she was still choosing not to have a normal life much like Willow did when she decided to stay in Sunnydale to fight evil. And Buffy didn’t try and stop Willow or Xander. I know, they weren’t her siblings, but all the more reason for her to try and prepare Dawn for any possible danger they might have to face.
15) The whole montage of Anya trying to get the girls to wish evil on Xander is both funny and sad because ultimately, I think what Anya was looking for even more so than them wishing vengeance on Xander was for their empathy and support. She realized that the people she had been spending time with for the last few years weren’t really their friends, and that’s a sobering reality.
16)
ANYA: Guys have been running roughshod over you for years. Torturing that perky little ticker. Aren't you sick of it? Don't you wish guys like that- BUFFY: Whoa. Guys? There have only been four - three! Three! Three guys. That's barely plural.
17) ICONIC!
WILLOW: Well, if there's anything we can do, just let us- ANYA: Actually... um... there is an eensy something I could use a little help with. You're lesbians so the hating of men will come in handy. Let's talk about Xander.
TARA: Well, it's, it's not really so much about hating the men. WILLOW: We're more centered around the...  girl on girl action. ANYA: And men really like to watch that kind of stuff, don't they? Men like Xander.
WILLOW: Well, Xander is a guy, so...  it's kinda not the surprise that he likes to watch... girls... Why are we talking about this? ANYA: We're comforting me! TARA: Well, I guess it's... natural for guys to be interested in- ANYA: God! What kind of lesbians are you?! If you love men so much, go love men!
18) Okay, I call this character development…
XANDER: Looks like someone's been keeping an eye on all your ins and outs. BUFFY: What the who? XANDER: Well, now, let's see. Who's obsessed with Buffy? Who likes to hang out in her yard and keep an eye on her? Who's in love with you and not getting any?
Tumblr media
I mean, every time Buffy had the slightest suspicion regarding Spike she would break into his crypt, punch him in the nose and ask questions later. This time, though, she dropped by, said hello, handed him the evidence, and talked to him calmly.
19)
SPIKE: Something happened to me. The way I feel... about you... it's different. And no matter how hard you try to convince yourself it isn't, it's real. BUFFY: I think it is.For you.
Tumblr media
20)
ANYA: I want Xander good and cursed. HALFREK: Then you know what you have to do. ANYA: Get a wish from someone who doesn't freaking love him. HALFREK: Exactly. ANYA: Yeah, but my social circle is a little limited here. What am I supposed to do, just stumble upon someone who doesn't give a fig's ass if Xander gets hurt?
Tumblr media
21)
ANYA: Oh my God. Spike *hates* Xander. Maybe I could get him to wish... dammit, if only he were a woman. Got it! If I can somehow get someone to wish that Spike were a woman, then I could go to him - well, he'd be a her by then - then I could go to her -a her by then - then I could go to her - HALFREK: Anyanka. There's an easier way. Now, I know you have this whole female-power, Take Back the Night thing, I think that's cute. But I've been telling you for decades - men need a little vengeance now and then, too.
I liked Anya’s idea, better, though. I really dig the idea of Fem!Spike.
22)
ANYA: To tell you the truth... all I wanted was to use him and lose him. I hadn't had a good tumble in a thousand years.
That’s… a big, fat lie. Anya could’ve used and abused any man if what she needed was only a good old tumble. But she came back to Sunnydale specifically to have sex with Xander. And when he wasn’t all lovey-dovey immediately afterwards, she got pissed. She actively pursued him until they were in a committed relationship. Also, this is kind of retcon. Anya mentioned she’d had sex with other demons, right? I remember that demon she runs into a season 7 talking about it. And are we supposed to believe she hadn’t had sex EVER as a vengeance demon? Are vengeance demons asexual?
23)
SPIKE: I was always going above and beyond. I saved the Scoobies how many times? And I can't stand the lot of you. ANYA: Me either! I hate us! Everybody's so *nice.* Nobody says what's on their mind. SPIKE: You do. That's why you're the only one of them I wouldn't bite if I had the chance. ANYA:  Really? SPIKE: Absolutely. I have nothing but respect for a woman who is forthright. Drusilla was always straightforward. Didn't have a single buggering clue about what was going on in front of her, but she was straight about it. That's a virtue. ANYA: Mm. Xander didn't think so. He thought I was rude. SPIKE: That's because he's one of them. Uptight. Repressed. ANYA: You think? SPIKE: Please. It's no wonder they couldn't deal with the likes of you and me, luv. We should have been dead hundreds of years ago ... and we're the only ones who are really alive.
I love pretty much everything about their conversation, but what stood out this time is the fact that he claims he wouldn’t bite Anya because he likes her personality, and it got me thinking... all those lonely nights in his crypt, with the chip in his head, reminiscing of the good ol’ times when he could bite as he pleased... Spike probably ranked the Scoobies according to how much he’d like to bite them... He’d already told Willow he’d bite her, and Xander he wouldn’t... I wonder who else made the “I would bite you” list...
24) I love this scene so much…
ANYA: This whole time, I've been coming on all... hell-bent and mad. Wanting his head, you know? When, really, I... can't sleep at night, thinking it ... has to be my fault, somehow...
Tumblr media
Spike seems really moved by Anya’s confession, and I feel like he wanted to say something to comfort her but he really didn’t know what. And then, she says exactly what’s he’s been feeling…
ANYA: What if it was just pretending? What if he never wanted me... the way I wanted him?
Tumblr media
And then he finally finds the words, but it’s not much consolation, though…
SPIKE: He would have to be more than just the git he is, Anya. He'd have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to want a woman like you. ANYA:  Then why?
Guh and they’re sexy as fuck.
Tumblr media
25) Hahahaha Willow’s reaction!
Tumblr media
26) And Andrew’s!
ANDREW: What are they... oh. WARREN: Is that- JONATHAN: Spike. ANDREW:  He is so cool. And, I mean, the girl is hot too.
27) I love that Willow realizes what’s been going on between Buffy and Spike just by gauging her expression at seeing him with someone else. So Buffy did care a little, as much as she’d insist on telling him otherwise.
28) And I also love how honest Buffy is about the whole thing once it’s finally out. She doesn’t shy away from Dawn’s questions, and she lets her know why she didn’t anything before.
DAWN: So. This is it? This is the stuff you've been protecting me from? You and Spike? BUFFY: And a lot of monsters. DAWN: Uh-huh. BUFFY: But it's over. Spike. DAWN: I wish you'd told me. BUFFY: I kinda didn't wanna admit it to myself. DAWN: I get that. I know it must hurt. To feel like you have to hide, to keep secrets from everybody?
And Dawn is so sweet and understanding, I love her.
29) Ugh and this is when things start getting really ugly…
Tumblr media
30) Why are you explaining, Anya? You don’t need to explain ANYTHING to Anyone! Also, if anyone needs reminding why I hate Xander half of the time, this is one of the BIG reasons why. He managed to slut-shame his best friend AND his ex-girlfriend whom he had left at the altar all in one sweep.
ANYA: It was just, it... it was just a thing. I... I felt bad, and he was just... there. BUFFY:  Didn't take long, did it? XANDER: Oh, oh, oh, okay! You had to do it. Because he was there. Like Mt. Everest. Like I used to be. ANYA: And then you weren't. You left *me,* Xander. At the altar. I don't owe you anything. XANDER: So you go out and bang the first body you can find? Dead or alive? ANYA: Where do you get off judging me?! XANDER: When this is your solution to our problems. I hurt you, and you hit me back? Very mature. ANYA: No, the mature solution is for you to spend your whole life telling stupid, pointless jokes, so that no one will notice that you are just a scared, insecure little boy! XANDER: I'm not joking now. You let that evil, soulless thing touch you. You wanted me to feel something? Congratulations, it worked. I look at you ... and I feel sick. 'Cause you had sex with that.
31) And of course, the petty vampire is all hurt and petty and he just has to make everything just a tad worse...
SPIKE: It's good enough for Buffy.
Tumblr media
32)  Anya finally understands that revenge isn’t going to fix anything, it won’t make her feel any better.
SPIKE: You know, I wish- ANYA: Don't.
33) HOLY FUCK! HOW AM I JUST NOTICING THAT THIS WAS WILLOW’S OMWF DRESS?!
Tumblr media
34) But thank god for this fleeting ray of sunshine among all the heartbreak…
TARA: Things fall apart. They fall apart so hard.
WILLOW: Tara?
TARA: You can't ever...  put them back the way they were.
WILLOW: Are you okay? TARA: I'm sorry, it's just ... You know, it takes time.  You can't just... have coffee and expect- WILLOW: I know.
TARA: There's just so much to work through. Trust has to be built again, on both sides ... You have to learn if... if we're even the same people we were, if you can fit in each other's lives. It's a long... important process, and... can we just skip it? Can-can you just be kissing me now?
Tumblr media
This is hands down one of the best kisses in the show. And the series finale, what a great way to end the show, don’t you think?
