Flamenco Fusion Pop/ Hispanic Arabic Fusion World Music Playlist (part 1)
i haven't done playlists in a long time, but I'm doing this one for my friend @ghostlydarknight, with some songs from the genre
Since Tumblr only allows 10 song per post, i'm dividing the playlist in two. In no particular order, here are some awesome songs that I would show to someone who doesn't know the genre anytime
Enjoy!
1- Djobi, Djoba - Gypsy Kings
2 - No Tendré Piedad - Azúcar Moreno
3- Mira la itana Mora - Gypsy Kings
4 - Me Sabe a Humo - Los Chungitos
5- De la Noche a la Mañana - Ishtar Alabina y Los Niños de Sara
6 - Pida Me La- Gypsy Kings
7- Yo te quiero, tu me quieres - Ishtar Alabina y Los Niños de Sara
When people talk about music what often comes up is “borrowed elements from X,” or “inspired by Y.” Usually one can see the trajectory of the borrowed elements, inspirations, etc. Like rock being influenced by jazz, or the Beatles borrowing elements of classical music in that Sgt. pepper album. It makes sense.
One morning in Chicago, Alex and I were listening to our friends’ flamenco record while they got ready for a Cubs game.
If anyone asks me, flamenco music is a little bit unhinged and without direction. It sounds like someone possibly on meth has gotten hold of their friend’s guitar and a wooden box, et voila, there they are just clapping and strumming out their jitters.
The melody in this acoustic song was so jarringly similar to Frank Sinatra’s mid-century jazzy My Way that I thought it had to be a joke. Its chaos totally obliterates the rich melancholy of Sinatra’s. “Why would anyone do this?” I wondered.
Shazam confirmed that what we were listening to was in fact Sinatra’s My Way being covered by a flamenco band called the Gypsy Kings. The app showed a photo of one of the Gypsy Kings’ album covers.
Alex: “Jesus why are there so many fkn people in this band? It’s like Slipknot.”
A quick google search confirmed the slipknot resemblance. Who are they trying to be, I thought.
For what are the gypsy kings, what have they got? If not themselves, then they have naught.
From Frank Sinatra to Slipknot, the gypsy kings being inspired by crooner jazz and hard rock breaks tradition by making no sense whatsoever. The song ended (thank god) and our friends appeared dressed in their Cubs gear ready to go. I got up from the couch, walked out the door knowing, I guess, that the gypsy kings did it

There was a monarchy in Scotland so noble that its kings and queens rival both the prestige and respect held by the Bruces and the Stewarts. It was known as the Gypsy Dynasty and it lasted for over 300 years.
