So in love with how NBC Hannibal clearly references the Hannibal films but instead of taking them as an inspiration for Hannibal’s character, the parallels between the movies and the series always depict Will instead.

Like this scene. This is a visual reference to Hannibal Rising (2007), where Hannibal kills one of the men that ate his sister.

In the show it’s WILL taking Hannibal’s place.

After this scene in Hannibal Rising, Hannibal continues to eat the man’s cheeks.

Also, Will’s whole prison setup is a mirror of the setup in Silence of the Lambs (1991).

They could have done the obvious, which is link the tv show Hannibal to the movie Hannibals (which, to be fair, they did in S3b; Hannibal’s prison chic minimalism was very much inspired by Manhunter (1986)). But I find it so interesting that they chose to visually mirror Hannibal’s development in Will’s storyline!! They’re the same. Will is following in Hannibal’s footsteps, he’s tracing it back to where it all began to become him. Ugh

Everyone always gives Hannibal hell for refusing to acknowledge that his trauma had any impact on him, especially since he's a skilled psychiatrist, but imagine if he did admit that to himself. Then what? Then, all illusions of being self-made disappear. He won't be the serial killer who chooses to kill out of curiosity and appreciation for the art of death. He'd just be a product of his trauma. Everything that he assumed control of, even the ritual of eating his victims that he'd carefully cultivated, all of that would just be a byproduct of that winter. He would be completely at the mercy of that memory, his whole life dictated and warped by that incident. And he would lose himself. Better to believe this was all his design. Better to dismiss that winter and say that it was determined to happen from the beginning. It would have happened anyway. The teacup would've shattered anyway. He had made it shatter. This was his design.

So now that I am reading Hannibal Rising I would like to share with you my discoveries. And this is a very interesting one.

This line appears in the book as well and it immediately sent me to this scene.

However, the line is said by someone else. Uncle Roberto and Lady Murasaki bring Hannibal to a psychiatrist to check him. He was mute at that time and heavily traumatized and wounded since his time in the russian orphanage and before.

The psychiatrist says exactly what Will says but in a quite different context. He explains that Hannibal's brain hemispheres function independently(*for the average human, the hemispheres communicate, that's why for example you wouldn't be able to draw a circle with your right hand and a square with your left hand at the same time).

So the doctor explains that that's the reason why Hannibal follows several trains of thought at once (...) and one of the trains always for his own amusement.

It's also interesting to note that the doctor says the this could have been the outcome of head trauma. We know Grutas had hit him badly to let go of Mischa. And we also know the monitors at the orphanage loved to beat him because he was mute and could not tell anyone.

I can’t stop thinking about how Will Graham truly didn’t have someone who talked or cared for him just for the sake of it (in season 1 and at the start of season 2) but rather because of what he had to offer:

Jack “borrowed” his imagination, at the expense of Will’s mental health. Yes, Will’s imagination saved lives, but it still cost him greatly. Even in season 3, he emotionally manipulates Will to help him because his deteriorating mental health “serves a greater purpose”

Alana didn’t date him because her professional curiosity towards him was greater than her romantic interest in him.

Hannibal in the first season found him fascinating due to his empathy disorder and then later let his encephalitis get worse so that he could study and observe the psychological effects it has on the human brain. And of course, he later used it to frame Will for his murders.

Beverly, too only came to see Will in jail because she needed help to solve the murders.

So, it makes sense why Will would find so much of himself in Hannibal, and form a close and complicated relationship with him, because after season 1, Hannibal was really the only person who understood him, accepted him, and loved him for who he was, and not his unique empathy disorder.

In the book Hannibal Rising, Hannibal was a little boy during WWII and his sister Mischa was killed and eaten by Nazis who had taken them hostage. They also forced him to eat her, which is supposed to be a very awkward and simplistic way to explain why Hannibal grew up to become hungry for human flesh.

The show however being set up in present times (they have computers, cell phone, tablets and all), there's no way Hannibal was a boy during WWII. And Hannibal states that Abigail, a teenager, reminded him of Mischa, so I think it's possible, if not necessary, that Mischa's tragedy in Bryan's mind was different than it was in Thomas Harris' book. Hannibal says at one point that he was able to forgive her only after eating her, implying that he ate her willingly; nobody force fed her to him. Mischa never betrayed him, but for her sake he betrayed himself for years, to protect her: that's what he needed to forgive her for...

It's also worth noticing that a couple of Birds of Paradise ornate Mischa Lecter's grave. It's an unusual choice of flower for a grave: birds of Paradise, in flower language, symbolize joyfulness and paradise, but it also symbolizes freedom, anticipation and excitement. It also is the official symbol of the ninth wedding anniversary, meaning it's associated with faithfulness in love.

There's no way this flower was picked up randomly: Hannibal grieved Mischa, but he also found freedom in her death. He may also consider that dying made her free as well. But he remained faithful to her memory, hence why he searched for a replacement in Abigail and, I think, in Will too -which wouldn't be an obstacle to see him in a romantic light as well: I don't think that Hannibal's definition of love is as clear cut as it is for everybody else. In the book Hannibal, for instance, he was in love with Clarice but he also wanted her to be a sister and a mother figure. For him, it's all blurred.

One last thing: the only time we saw Hannibal crying was when he talked about Abigail to Bedelia. Now it's commonly thought that he was in fact crying for Will, but I'd rather tend to think that in his mind Abigail and Will had merged in one entity at this moment. OR he was really crying for Abigail, because he genuinely wanted to create a father/brother bond with her, but made it impossible when he cut her ear and forced her to hide and play dead. We saw it in the last episode of season 2, she stayed with Hannibal because she was scared and didn't know what else to do. She would never be his Mischa again. He failed her.
