{Twice As Bad AU} Wukong & Macaque ♤ Even Little Things
Art drawn by me.
My little take on @semisolidmind's TAB AU due to peeps asking me to cover that as an X Reader ever since that one doodle I once did for it.
As usual, tweaked some things a bit in the AU just for the sake of the plot- And also cuz I haven't really kept track of all the canon things in the AU, so I'm mostly just using the basic premise of the AU and added/removed some things for the story twist, humor and all that. So please don't take it as canon y'all-
Also, I speedran this within three days to post it earlier than planned, so... Happy birthday, Semi! Have 4k words of ya bois as birthday gift, I guess. :D
TW: Descriptions of death and gore
[TL;DR] Monke have 'yummy' berry if customer have coin.
Tumblr media
♤ ~ Emotional Mix ~ ♤
It started out as a regular day at the market for you.
You owned a little stall where you would sell berries you and your little monkey friends collected. You kept on insisting that you wanted to collect them on your own, but the two ginger-furred and dark-furred monkeys just wouldn't leave you alone. Though, their kindness and willingness to help you did prove useful in the end. You managed to garner a lot of berries by the end of the day. How they managed to get them all? You would never know. You didn't exactly question it much either due to how many you were able to sell. Sales were pretty good today as well... And as per usual, your two little monkeys were practically guarding you and your stall, which you found really adorable. They looked like two innocent and fluffy puppies looking out for their beloved owner. And their cuteness did definitely contribute to your berry selling success.
Though, while they were pretty quiet and polite towards your customers that were just there to buy berries, there were some they truly didn't like to have around you at all... More specifically, those who showed even the slightest bit of romantic interest towards you.
Especially that farmer boy.
God, they really hated that guy for some reason.
Even if they just saw him walk across the street, far away from where you actually were, they would already start letting out aggressive sounds of pure hatred. Meanwhile you would just awkwardly wave at the poor guy. Though, besides the few customers that had interest in you, your monkeys were pretty well-behaved when you were around. You found it adorable how they would even help fill up tiny bags with berries like little helpers. And if they weren't doing that, they would either sit or lie around on your stall or cling onto you while you worked. They especially loved body contact with you, so they mostly clung onto you. All they wanted in return for their help was your affection, oddly enough. No snack either, just affection. You only had to give them little kisses or cuddle them a bit and they were already melting in your arms. Another cute thing they would do whenever you were selling berries was to give you gifts...
Well, it certainly sounds cute in theory.
However, their gifts ranged from not only some simple shiny rocks and flowers, but also to literal little animals and insects... Which were usually alive whenever they were the dark-furred monkey's gift, but were most definitely always dead in the ginger-furred monkey's case. Of course, you would still praise them as to not upset them... And while they were highly aware of your discomfort whenever they brought in animals and insects, they just ignored it. Then again, you never thought much of it since in your eyes, they were just monkeys. Just two simple, silly, little monkeys. Why would they respect your discomforts when they couldn't even talk?
Well, despite your little monkeys not being able to talk to you, they did seem to understand you. Which felt really nice, considering most in the village either didn't trust you or enjoy talking to you... So their company was very endearing and appreciated.
Especially in certain moments...
"What do you mean you're out of berries?" A tough-looking man asked, definitely pissed off. So you tried to stay calm and defuse the situation as best as you could.
"Sorry, sir... But all berries are already sold out. The last batch was sold a few minutes ago. B-But you could come back tomorrow and-" "I don't have the fucking time to come back tomorrow! I need those berries now!" He rudely cut you off.
"I, uh, understand, sir, but-" "I know you still have berries in stock! I can see a bunch in the basket over there!" He cut you off again, yelling in your face as he pointed towards the basket behind you. You grimaced a little in discomfort.
"Sir, those are berries I'll deliver after work to a woman who already paid for them-" "Then give her that money back or some shit, will ya?! Just give me those damn berries instead already!" The man looked like he would jump behind the stall's counter any moment now to launch himself at you, when you suddenly heard very familiar growling coming from behind the man... He turned around, only to see two small monkeys glaring furiously at him.
The man scoffed. "The fuck are those doing here? Are those your pets or some shit?" You gave your monkeys worried glances, not wanting them to get involved and get hurt. This man looked tough and would have no problem getting rid of two little monkeys...
But your monkeys were different.
Instead of backing down, they slowly approached the man aggressively on all fours. Their tails were dangerously swaying behind them as they snarled at him... While they could tolerate the presence of customers in most cases, this was one of the few cases where they really were just out to murder. All they needed was an opening...
Wukong then seemingly stopped snarling for a moment as he whispered something extremely quietly, to which Macaque nodded. While Macaque continued to aggressively approach the man, his brother gave the man one last glare before running up to you instead, launching himself at you. Startled, you stumbled back a bit as he jumps at you. And with seemingly extreme strength, he managed to knock you down to the ground behind your stall. Your stall obscured your vision of the man and your other monkey. You groaned a bit in pain before you looked at the ginger-furred monkey, who just smiled at you with a love-struck gaze. He didn't attack you or anything, his tail just swayed happily as he nuzzled you. You, of course, were confused by his sudden mood change. "Why did you tackle me-"
Then, you heard a scream from the man for just a split second before the other monkey's snarling suddenly stopped. Everything was silent. Suspicious and confused, you held the ginger-furred monkey against your chest while he continued to happily nuzzle into you. You then stood back up and looked towards the front of your stall... The man was gone. But the dark-furred monkey was still there, sitting contently like a good boy where the man once was. His tail happily swayed behind him as well as if nothing ever happened just now...
The man's decomposing body was found hanging from a tree by his own guts in the forest a few days later. According to those who found his corpse, his body was completely mangled. His face was seemingly ripped or mauled off, displaying his skull with his eyes missing. His rib cage seemed to have been crushed and his abdomen was torn wide open. Part of his organs were missing, and a single bloody peach was found buried inside the body. His tongue was ripped off and literally stuffed down his throat, as if it were there to tell him to forever keep quiet... Not to mention all his broken bones that were not just simply snapped, but crushed into pieces. The entire scene was extremely horrifying for those that saw his remains. Some sort of brutal demon must've killed him. Yet the reasons were unknown as to why this man would be murdered in such a gruesome way... What did the man think in his last moments? Was he immediately dead or was he tortured alive? The people of the village seemed to mentally point their fingers in your direction, however. Especially due to how you were one of the last people they saw him with.
That was just one of the strange happenings surrounding you and your monkey companions.
Something else the villagers noticed was the other rather recent murder cases looked similar, though less brutal. Whoever, or whatever, killed the other people also killed this man. But the other victims usually only had their abdomens be ripped open and their organs ripped out, for whatever reason... Though, they all were found with a single bloody peach inside them.
And of course, villagers kept you in mind as a major suspect. Which was sort of understandable since all those people were people who basically told you to get lost and fuck off, telling you that you don't belong in their community. The more people suspected you to be at least involve in the serial murders, the less people would stop by your berry stall. Which in turn made you feel sad and confused... Did you do something wrong?
Your two little monkeys noticed your guilt and self-doubt creeping in, and they didn't like seeing you beat yourself like this over whatever those other humans thought of you.
Thus, they decided now was the time to make themselves known and 'save' you from this unworthy village.
And what better way than to go out with a bang?
So, they decided to help 'sell' some berry bags personally and directly. They packed them up themselves again and snuck into peoples' houses, taking some of their coins and leaving a bag of berries everywhere they went. The two of them were extremely helpful. They came back to you with coins everytime, so you assumed they managed to sell their little bags to happy customers. All would be fine again soon...
...At least, that's what you had hoped.
News spread fast in the village.
A death was reported in the east.
Another further north.
Few more in the west.
The southern area seemed to have multiple dead people already...
People were dropping dead like flies everywhere within the span of just a single day...
The entire panic rising within the village only seemed to enhance your uneasiness as well. You were mostly outside around your stall after all... What if this so called serial killer found you? Or perhaps there was a deadly virus going around and you shouldn't even be outside in the first place...
You held your monkeys close in worry as you feared for their and your own safety, standing behind your stall once more. While you were feeling uneasy, your monkey companions only seemed all too happy and content with no care in the world as you let them nuzzle into you with cute little chirps. Sighing, you looked at all the berries you still haven't managed to sell. Feeling a little hungry, you decided to eat a few of the berries you had. After taking one of the berry bags the monkeys had packed, you grabbed a few of the berries and were about to eat them.
Suddenly, the ginger-furred one stopped you by quickly switching from clinging onto your chest to clinging onto the arm that was holding the berries, stretching his body from your arm up to your hand to clasp his own little hands around it, keeping you from eating the berry. He looked at you with seemingly slightly concerned eyes, shaking his head as he let out quiet noises, which sounded like he was begging you not to eat them. It was strange how strong this little monkey actually was... His tiny hands were preventing you from even opening your hand. The dark-furred monkey also seemed to join in on stopping you from consuming those berries as he nuzzles into your neck, wrapping his tail around the arm that's holding the bag. The sight must've looked funny to others if they were passing by, to be honest.
Confused, you decide to just listen to the monkeys and not eat the berries... Maybe they were just upset that you'd wanna unpack and eat the berries they had so nicely packed for customers earlier. Which would make sense.
Another day had passed and...
Where was everyone?
You set up your bags at your stall and were patiently waiting for someone, anyone, to even just walk past. However, everything was silent for a few hours. Dead silent for a village that had a bunch of gossip going around. Not even your monkey companions were following you this morning, oddly enough. This only added to your fear since those little guys were like your comfort pets.
Another hour passed and finally some sound was heard in the distance. Were those... screams?
Now more on edge than ever, you decided that maybe you should sit this day out on trying to sell... You didn't exactly want to lose your life to some massacre or virus after all. A bit panicked by the scream, you quickly tried to pack up the little berry bags into a basket. But as you were starting to pack up, you could hear a male voice fake coughing to grab your attention. Startled by the sudden noise after all the dead silence, you almost dropped one bag before you turned to face the person in front of your stall... Or, uh... Monkey...?
This dark-furred monkey seemed familiar... Maybe he was related to one of your little monkey friends?
He smirked at you as he leaned against the stall, his tail swaying slowly behind him. "Hey there, sugarplum. Did I arrive a bit too late? My brother and I heard you sell delicious berries here."
You waved your hand dismissively, nervous as you never had a monkey, or rather a demon in this case, being a customer. The nickname was also making you a little nervous, but maybe he was just one of those people who give everyone they see nicknames. "Oh- No, no- You're not late- I just... Didn't think I would get any customers today..."
He leaned in a bit closer to you. "Oh? Why's that? Aren't your berries said to be the best in this village though?"
"Uh, well... Yes, but usually some customers would've already bought some at this time in the day... But you'd be my first customer today." You admitted sheepishly. He only seemed to grin... You didn't know he could hear your anxious heartbeat. He knew you didn't exactly feel safe. But you were still trying to be calm and polite towards even a dangerous-looking demon him. Which he found cute. That's when his ear twitched as he heard something you couldn't hear, making his grin turn into a more... seductive one.
"I'm actually not here to buy any of those bags you're offering. I am interested in one specific berry from your stall, however."
You blinked at him in confusion. "...What berry? They're all pretty much the same?"
"Not all of them." He responded. The simian chuckled as he looked at you with intent. "There's one berry my brother and I have been keeping a close eye on for quite a while now, and we want to claim that berry for ourselves... It simply sticks out. Just like a delicious peach amongst a bunch of mediocre berries. My brother's words, not mine. But I do have to agree with him on this one." He then leaned in a little closer to you, still giving you this sort of seductive grin. "And as an honorable and kind merchant, surely you would love to fulfill a customer's simple request... Right?"
His deep voice made him sound so smooth, but his words and the way he said them also just sounded... Off... This was not a regular exchange for food, that much you could tell. But before you could reply, you heard another voice coming from behind you. "Well, well, well... How's business? Did I miss anything, Macaque?" You turned around in shock, noticing a ginger-furred simian behind you. Some sort of red and gold staff is held loosely on his shoulder as he smirked. Though, the thing that set you off the most were the clear blood spots on his fur, his clothes, and especially on one side of his staff...
"Nah, you didn't miss a thing. I was just mentioning what we wanted to 'buy'." Macaque responded with a shrug as he leaned back a bit, though still resting with his arms on the stall's counter.
They could clearly tell you were scared. And of course, as your beloved monkeys, they wanted to make you feel as comfortable around them as possible. So, maybe a little bit of an introduction would make things easier. The ginger-furred monkey raised his free hand with a little wave, smiling kindly as if he didn't just murder humans a few minutes ago. "Hey, peaches! My name is Sun Wukong. Legendary Monkey King and Great Sage Equal To Heaven! Also strongest demon you'll ever see as well as the most sexy monkey in existence- Aaaanyway, this is my sworn brother, and second-in-command, the Six-Eared Macaque." He said to break the ice, gesturing towards the dark-furred monkey as well.
"Just call me Macaque. And him Wukong." Macaque added with a bit of a shrugging hand motion. Then he moves his hand just enough to point towards his brother with a taunting, shit-eating grin. "It's much easier than Six-Eared Macaque and whatever the fuck long ass title Wukong decided to give himself." He grins smugly, to which Wukong huffs in a rather arrogant way.
"Well, excuse me for having achieved more in life than you." Wukong retorted.
"Great Sage Equal To Heaven was not an achievement if you practically begged for it."
"But Warlord was."
"You didn't even name that title in your introduction though??"
"I didn't wanna make them feel more anxious than they already are, okay??"
"And since when are you the most sexy monkey in existence?? That's bullshit and you know it."
"Hey! That title may be a tiny bit opinion-based, but it is an accurate description of me."
"Could you stop letting your ego go to your head for like five minutes? I'm still the brains in this duo. And the brain doesn't need the muscle's ego surrounding it."
"...Okay, now this is getting fucking personal, you goddamn hypocrite-"
To be honest, you weren't exactly scared at this moment anymore, just confused and uncomfortable due to them arguing and practically being so close to just claw at each other's throats over petty titles. Macaque rolled his eyes at Wukong before turning back to you, trying to get back on topic to avoid Wukong getting pissed at him over nothing again. "So about that 'peach amongst berries' talk-" Suddenly, Wukong quickly wrapped an arm around you, pulling you against his blood-stained armor with a grin. His annoyed mood immediately flipped like a switch to a more love-struck one again.
"Oh? Did our peaches agree? Was my pick-up line enough to convince them~? Did you tell them about the real us yet?" He hummed. You grimaced a bit in discomfort at him suddenly touching you so casually. Especially because you could tell he reeked of death... Was... Was he the one who killed those people...? The more you thought about it, the more connections clicked in your mind... The peach references, the way people described the latest murder of the man who yelled at you, the fact that for some reason it's all connected to literal demon monkeys...
Your heartbeat rose up, making Macaque smirk. "Well, not verbally... But I think they're starting to understand what's happening on their own. What a smart human we've picked!"
"Y-You- Wh- Wait what-" You stammered out in shock, definitely now more scared than ever before. Wukong quickly picked you up into his arms after making his staff seemingly disappear into thin air. His strength was no joke either as he clearly didn't struggle at all in holding you. His tail was happily moving behind him in excitement.
"C'mon, Macaque. We got what we came here for." Wukong stated as he walked a bit further away from your stall. You attempted to escape by trying to move out of his grip, but despite barely even gripping onto you, you were simply just flailing around a bit, clearly unable to escape your cage that were his arms. He simply ignored your attempt at an escape as he smiled contently, giving you a very familiar love-struck look...
That reminded you of your little monkey companions. Your heartbeat spiked and Macaque took notice. He raised an eyebrow at you in confusion because your heartbeat didn't change much since you started flailing in Wukong's arms. "Is something wrong, (Y/N)?"
You stopped in shock, looking at the dark-furred monkey with wide eyes. "W-Wh... H-How do you know my name?"
Ah. Right, right. You didn't know yet.
Macaque chuckled as he cupped your cheek with you still in his brother's arms. "Well, you see... We sorta picked up your name during the weeks, or I guess months at this point, when we were helping you around the village. You know, packing up berries and all that... We even made sure the latest batches had the freshest type of toxin for the best quality!" He grinned maliciously as he crossed his arms. Your mouth hung agape in shock as some tears gathered in your eyes...
"You... Y-You were those two monkeys...?" You asked quietly in disbelief... All those deaths... If they put those toxic berries in the bags you were paid for... Didn't that automatically make you a form of accomplice in their schemes? And you got paid for basically allowing them to kill all these people. You started to sob, "...Oh my god... No, no, no... This- T-This can't be- I-I would never h-help... kill- I-I d-didn't mean t-to-"
Wukong then leaned his head down a bit to kiss your forehead with a faint blush and a soft smile. "Shhh... It's fine, peaches. Don't cry. You can just put all the blame on us if that helps." He said quietly, trying to sound comforting. The warlord clearly didn't care about all the dead people, he only cared about wanting to see you smile. He summoned some form of cloud and hopped onto it with you still trapped in his arms. Then he gave his second-in-command a malicious grin. "Macaque, I'll take them home. Sweep through the village one last time. If anyone is still alive, you know what to do."
Macaque returned his own malicious grin as he bowed a little. And with his bow, a shadow-like portal opened up beneath him, swallowing him into the ground. Meanwhile, you could only helplessly watch as Wukong made his cloud fly high up into the skies at pretty high speeds. If you managed to escape his grasp now, you would just be dead. Looking back towards your village, you could see bodies lying outside, most had no blood as they probably died to the berries, but some were clearly attacked earlier by Wukong... You also witnessed houses collapsing within giant flames...
Even the sky above the village itself seemed to look doomed from afar...
You could even still see another human begging for help before being tortured by Macaque's shadows...
You were just silently crying as Wukong took you away to Flower Fruit Mountain, which would soon become your new home. Whether you would like it or not. You were theirs now. And it all simply started with some small berries...
If only you had known that even the littlest of things could snowball you down to hell.

I drew this for a joke and unironically had the most fun drawing than I have in a while, if you want a fun time try drawing in macaques shitty artstyle. Purposefully making something bad like this was the most freeing and rewarding thing I’ve drawn ever since I started

Hairstyle Art Challenge featuring my Genderbent MK design
Made the template, because I was inspired by all the hairstyle challenges I remember seeing on Deviantart way back in the day.
Season 1-4: self explanatory.
Long: MK would probably never have hair this long in my AU, but it was fun to draw her like this.
Hair Accessories: Season 1 length with accessories
Pigtails: Season 2 length, I imagine she's at a sleepover with Mei.
Half Up/Half Down: Season 2 length, the jacket isn't canon to the AU, but MK is absolutely the type of person to buy Macaque merch.
Bed head: Season 2 length, I liked this one at first but now I kinda want to redraw it 😂
Dyed: Party Clone, my beloved.
Windswept: Season 1 length.
Wet: Season 1 length, my personal favorite. Hadn't ever drawn rain before. Was fun.

My mom: *sees me hard at work crafting and not talking to anyone just spacing out with my headphones in* wow I wonder what's got him so quiet?
Tumblr media
Me: *thinking about tired MK. MK who has had enough of everything. MK who ever since the spider Queen has felt like a weapon, like if he stops training or doing ANYTHING then everything will fall apart. MK who has tried everything under the sun to feel better and cope but no one understands--not truly. Not enough that the burden of being the hero gets any lighter. Even working alongside Mei, his best friend in the whole world, he feels the need to be the leader, because as great as she is she doesn't have his powers. MK who, ever since the Lady Bone Demon, has a bittersweet relationship with the Monkey King, to the point where he can't look him in the eyes anymore because when he does it just hurts. MK who, as soon as he gets the perfect chance, goes to see macaque to see if MAYBE he has some advice, though deep down he's just worried he'll be tricked again.
Macaque is intrigued at the kid's sudden lack of energy and how everything about his energy just seems darker. Still, Macaque tells his true opinion to the kid when MK asks about the Monkey King. He's just Wukong, just a lazy immortal who only ever disregards others. And when the kid leaves with an odd sag in his shoulders he can't help but feel worried for him, even if he tries to deny actually caring about him.
MK who goes off on his own without telling anyone. MK who stops by Redson's house to ask if he knows any good demonic runes or something to make it so people can't find him. MK who disappears for a fairly long period of time and no one can get a hold of him because even though Redson thought it was a strange thing to ask for, he still complied because it was worse having to look at MK's oddly sad face.
MK who gets used to being alone. MK who never settles down, is always on the move in between different cities and towns, and he has no idea why but there's always some sort of half assed care package waiting for him by his bag in the morning, and along with it a poorly drawn doodle of him. On his birthday, there's a full note, signed by all his friends, even Macaque, not asking him why he left, but just asking him to come home safely.
MK, who, after a full year away from home, makes the trip back. He's happy to see that the city hasn't fallen apart without him, happy that he won't have to clean up a mess.
MK, who walks into Pigsy's and feels a lump in his throat when he smells his favorite recipe being cooked. Pigsy, who just about jumps over the counter to embrace his son, Tang joining in, and as if she could sense it, Mei appears too and causes the three of them to collapse onto the ground as she throws herself into them.
MK, breaking down into sobs without any words as he allows himself to be loved. The Monkey King, who goes to MK instead of the other way around, very patiently waiting his turn to speak to him because he knows this is a lot for anyone who missed the kid. Macaque showing up as well alongside Redson and both will still deny how much they care for him but they don't even try to mask their relief at seeing him safe and in one piece as he sits down to eat a proper meal.
MK, who goes to sleep that night in his childhood bedroom at Pigsy's place instead of his apartment because they both need the reassurance that the other is there.
MK, who feels refreshed after finally getting a break from everything.

Ya know what would be so funny? The three people Macaque is drawn with alot either don't know who he is or just don't fucking like him.
(Oh by the way there is absolutely nothing wrong with drawing Macaque with any of these people as a duo or ship, besides the minor. Like it's cute but I just find it funny that MACAQUE is the one that gets drawn with these three.)
I've seen Macaque drawn with these three alot:
Princess Iron Fan: The joke is that since Wukong and Bull King are sworn brothers what if Princess Iron Fan and Macaque were sworn siblings. It's just silly.
Chang'e: They both are the moon. Macaque calls himself the moon and Chang'e is litteraly the moon goodess who is stuck on the moon. Ha ha, get it?
Bai He (Lady Bone Demon's possesed body): Macaque caught the girl when she fell so they're so obviously father and daughter. Nah I'm kidding, it's fine. But yeah, Macaque caught the girl when she fell so people made them father and daughter.
I just find it silly because
1. Has Princess Iron Fan met Macaque? Like ever? Even then, would she even like him. Something tells me she wouldn't really like the guy that stalks and obsesses over her brother in law, no matter how much she may not like him anymore.
2. Chang'e and Macaque, those hoes have never met. Ever. Ha ha moon. (Bro Chang'e is on the moon after the loss of her husband. Macaque compares himself to the moon because SUN Wukong and because sun and moon dynamic. That is not the same thing.)
3. Bro what the hell happened to that girl??? Like Macaque didn't adopt her. The last we see of her is eating noodles in Pigsy's shop. I find it funny that people looked at those 2 and thought "Yes, father and daughter."
Again honestly, there is nothing wrong with doing this. Seriously I'm not making fun of you. I just find it funny that MACAQUE is the one you wanna give interesting dynamics to.
(My FAVORITE part is all these people that I listed, their dynamics work better with Wukong. Princess Iron Fan and Wukong are siblings in law, Wukong has met Chang'e and she's a big fan, and wouldn't the litte girl make more sense with Wukong because they could both share the trauma of being possesed. Actually as we speak I'm writing a fic where Wukong apologizes to Bai He and tries to explain that no, he didn't want to kill her but the bone demon needed to be defeated and Bai He is just listening. I'll post whenever the hell I get that done.)

Hiyaa! I LOVE your artwork <3
Also, have you ever drawn the Six Eared Macaque? If not, what does he look like in your style? I'm curious.
Thank you! and thank you for this ask alsdfj I hadnt thought about that before but your ask did make me sit down and consider what i'd want to do with my own personal iteration of the character. So i brushed myself up on the story around Six Eared Macaque and did some doodling until I found something that I personally liked. Also linking a really good write up by @journeytothewestresearch about Six Ear Macaque and his origins, right here. Particularly about why he has six ears in the first place, stemming from the phrase "The dharma is not to be transmitted to the sixth ear". While Macaque may have been able to listen in from who knows how far and for how long into Wukong's life, enabling him to mimic him and his powers incredibly well, he's still ultimately not privy to the real truth that Wukong attained during his travels. I started trying to draw this skrunkly imposter who while he may desperately want to be like Wukong, and believes he DESERVES to inherit his glory and deeds, he's still this poor imitation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But! had fun with this guy and now I have some more ideas around him and possible shenanigans. He was fun to figure out and i might work with the idea more, but either way, thank you again for the ask!

There is so much Wukong x OC or Wukong x Reader I’m actually flabbergasted. Six Eared Macaque I understand but not the asexual, super Buddhist monkey.
I answered something like this nearly a year ago but I'm still going to have the same answer a few times.
Wukong is a very charming and compelling character so it's not insane to think how people can fall in love with the character romantic or not. Narratively wise there has to be some suspension of disbelief but that is why it is fiction itself, and romance is another genre used to explore character depth. Wukong is a well-written interesting characteristic and I am not surprised that people are drawn to him again whether platonically or romantically, both imply a level of affection they have for Sun Wukong. There has been other media that asks for that 'suspicion for belief' as well.
Tumblr media
I've also spoken about how Wukong with a significant other isn't that strange either. For the past twenty years, Wukong has been the object of desire in dozens of xiyouji romance plays and moves ever since the hit film Chinse Odessey, which cemented that Sun Wukong isn't just a hero, but a human being that has his own wants and flaws, and capturing the hearts of millions cause they saw themselves in him and his struggles. I talked about how impactful this movie was in changing Wukong from a fighter to a human here and here. Nowadays with more modern films, the use of romance isn't the only trope to use to explore characters and have them relate with audiences when it comes to love and lost but in the 2000s there were dozens of Wukong romances trying to capture that magic again of Wukong experiencing love and losing it because not matter how strong he is, he is just like anyone else and have heartache.
Tumblr media
And it doesn't have to be Wukong from the original book. While Wu Cheng'en was able to provide that Wukong himself is a complex, charming, intelligent, and fascinating individual, there are hundreds of movies and shows that also wish to explore such a transformative character. I still see how popular Hero is Back 2015 Sun Wukong was and still is as one of the most fan-favorite Wukongs. There are many different Wukongs in different media that can be fan-favorites and really stick with audiences but that doesn't necessarily mean these are meant to be Wukong from the book as movies/shows could add or subtract certain elements from the Book Wukong in these adaptations. It would be unfair to both the book and the artists to say they are the same as the novel was created 400 years ago with heavy themes and saturated in symbolism, while movies and shows are created by artists for a generation, each media a time capsule for their audience and a reflection of the directors that wish to still be unique in their designs. While I have no doubt that many people adore Wukong from the novels I can't say that anyone hasn't been influenced by other media in how they interpret Wukong as well.
That rambling aside, what I'm trying to say is that Wukong and romance are nothing new, and seeing people ship themselves with Wukong is also nothing new. Six Ears only has two chapters and only really shines when movies or shows give him screen time, which is highly skewed due to the SHEER amount of Xiyouji media with just Wukong there is making that statically Wukong of course is going to have more fans, both back then and now.

Had some inspiration for a shadowpeach fic! Here is just the sort of premise, I might go full crazy and write this if people are actually interested 🤷‍♂️
SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4
Wukong, unlike the others, wasn't forced to relive his story while trapped withinthe scroll, my personal theory being he was too powerful so easily broke free from the influence. Well after his tile is destroyed by Azure he essentially IS forced to relive his story, trapped in his old body.
Wukong is quick to realize he can simply zone out and allow the story to carry itself out. But reliving his life with his future experiences guiding him, he begins to notice things he never did.
When he was young he knew he was arrogant, brash and quick to anger. His journey to the west with his celestial companions taught him that. With this new self awareness he struggles with his selfish, pig-headed action he must now relive.
But it comes to a head when he meets Macaque again. Reliving how they first met and the strong bond they formed. Wukong struggles with the Monkey he knew in the past and the tentative frenemy he knows in the present. But quickly he's charmed by the memories of their grandiose yet naive hopes and dreams of their younger selves.
At first he's simply taking advantage if a long gone closeness he hasn't felt with...well anyone, not since Macaques death, the end of the brotherhood, and the inevitable deaths of his celestial companions.
He's enjoying the easy companionship of allies whose journeys have yet to see their paths diverge. But he finds himself drawn to Macaque more and more, even beyond the time he originally spent with him the first time he lived through these experiences.
It wasn't until after the dark furred simians untimely death that Wukong ever began to realize he might have taken his companion for granted. Wukong hated to admit it even at the end of his journey, in the recesses of his own mind, he simply expected Macaque to always be there when he returned. Waiting at flower fruit mountain for him with a smile and warm embrace to greet him each time as he always did when he returned from an adventure.
It wasn't until the first time he returned to flower fruit mountain after his journey to a silent mountain that it began to sink it.
There were still monkeys living on the mountain but they hesitant and fearful to approach him. These monkeys were the grandchildren maybe the great-grandchildren of the previous generation of monkeys, those of which who had only ever heard stories of Wukong. Thus to this new generation of monkeys, Wukong was a stranger. One they could sense had a power beyond them, making keeping their distance easy.
There was no familiar fanfare celebrating his return. No brush of air as Macaque slunk out of his shadow behind him. No familiar warm breath near his ear and quiet "boo" whispered mischievously. Wukong would turn, despite knowing Macaque would already be long gone when he turned his head. Leaving only quiet laughter in his wake.
It would turn into a game of impromptu tag. Macaque dancing through shadows his rich, soft laughter a tantalizing trail to follow. Wukong using his gold vision to catch glimpses of the trickster as he raced after him always seconds behind the willy shadow.
Eventually he'd get lucky or Macaque would get cocky and his hand would finally curl around a shadow limb or appendage and he'd tug the shadow free of his inky portal and they'd roll in the grass, laughing and tussling until they'd lay side by side. Chests heaving with laughter and exertion.
As their breathing calmed and laughter slowly died, side by side they lay, cushioned by the lush greenery in the dappled shade of the trees. And finally macaque would glance back at him and he'd smile one of his small, rare genuine smiles.
Smiles Wukong now realized were solely for him, the warmth that the thought ignited in his chest was one he wasn't ready to examine yet, but the realization was the same none the less as he tucked it away into the back of his mind.
Macaque would gift him a smile while gently entwining his fluffier dark tail with Wukongs own golden one. And Wukong would give him a crooked grin of his own, all teeth and crinkled eyes and say,
"I'm home!"
Macaque would huff a laugh, barely more than an sharp exhale of air. A sound Wukong wouldn't know at the time how much he'd miss it in the future. How much he should have treasured it. Macaque fingers would brush his, tickling along his palm just as the grass beneath their hands tickled the back of his hand. Entertwining their fingers with a squeeze.
"Welcome home Wukong."
But after his journey. After the end of the brotherhood. After he left his celestial companions. After he killed Macaque.
He has been met with nothing but silence.
Now as he relives all the time before his friends demise he can't help the guilt of everything he missed simply because he wasn't paying attention.
The cruel words and actions their other "brothers" would casually throw at Macaque, especially Peng, made Wukongs blood boil.
The way Macaque seemed to always open his mouth before biting back whatever he was going to say. Not even attempting to try and have his voice heard.
The way he looked at Wukong.
He really had been such an idiot. Never noticing the besotted gaze.
He tried his best to stay focused, find a way out of the scroll to help Mk and defeat Azure in the real world.
But part of him knows he can't get out on his own this time, something is different. So might as well enjoy it while he can right? So the Monkey King keeps telling himself. Not that it stops the guilt from surging each time he indulges himself in a memory.
Letting himself lean further into Macaques during their grooming sessions, eyes closed in bliss while biting back the practically mountain shaking volume of his purrs. Though not entirely despite the embarrassment because he sees the way Macaque fluffs up, cheeks flush from pride and poorly hidden affection at the other monkeys obvious enjoyment.
Wukong isn't sure how this will effect his relationship with Macaque in the real world, he's not sure he wants to think about it honestly.
So for now he's going to enjoy the time with Macaque, it might be the only time he's ever allowed this close again.
So Wukong is determined to commit these experiences to memory this time. He knows he will have to make these memories last a lifetime. Afterall he's the least deserving of the shadow monkeys forgiveness, not after what he's done.

This is very funny to me @sketching-shark as that outburst he has in that movie is honestly half the reason this AU exists to begin with, his full on 'MAYBE I DO HAVE A MOM, YOU DON'T KNOW THAT' stuck with me so much it must've influenced this AU and it's subsequent resurgence this year unconsciously.
Also apologies for the sheer size of all this.
The first thing I ever drew for it was after Monkey King: Hero is Back came out and the designs were partially inspired by the movie making mama a bit more macaque shaped. Whereas this year both mama and Wukong got a slightly more long-tailed monkey design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The idea of the AU - which with a pinch of salt I admit might mess the narrative the story just a touch, but it is predominantly a fluffy AU - is that instead of coming from the egg fully cognizant and adult in shape, Wukong bursts from the egg and is very much baby.
I had it out in a rough little comic that Mama (she has no name right now or ever honestly) comes across this egg that's been cracked open and finds a tiny little fluffball inside and she is immediately just like; 'Mine', because she's not leaving a baby alone on the mountain. He might be fresh in their troop, maybe their actual mama left them here for safety and got eaten by a tiger? So sad.
And that's how he ends up in the Huaguo troop and is raised by Mama and his aunties alongside his future generals/best friends.
The beats of the story are basically the same it just explores a closer knit connection with his family that we see partly but not enough I feel.
For instance, I haven't drawn it yet, but the first taste of death that Wukong is the death of one of the elderly matrons of the troop that drop down dead when he and the other juveniles are playing. He's so confused and distraught that this would happen, even more so that it's apparently just natural and although sad something he has to 'accept'. And obviously he doesn't, nor does he like it.
That's his catalyst for his Master Subodhi arc and along with the insult of being dragged to Hell why he erases all of the names of the monkeys in the books of death.
In this AU I like to explore not only Wukong's familial happiness but the fact that all in all his catalyst for becoming immortal is because he loves life and doesn't want it to end or be put into the cycles of reincarnation to have a 'new one'. This is his life, he wants to keep living it.
Anyway back to the crux, the beats continue and in typical Mama fashion - no matter how old he gets or how splendorous and great; he is still mama's baby.
Tumblr media
I haven't gotten to the point of how it incorporates into the Journey, though my favourite jokes from friends so far is the idea that - would probably not work on the Great Sage whatsoever - whenever Tripitaka gets angry or extremely frustrated before he has to tighten the circelt; he just whips out the 'I will tell your mother' card on Wukong which doesn't really intimidate him at all. But in the back of his mind he's like;
'Oh no, what if he does tell my mama, I promised to be a good boy on this pilgrimage I can't have Guan Yin AND my mama be upset with me.'
The ideas are still manifesting fresh and I'm working on a hopefully cute alternative to the Six-Eared Macaque story in which he might still die, but also might end up living, it's more so how he's found out in this iteration.
But YEAH that's all I have so far, just a soft fluffy AU that explores Wukong's familial side as the community grandpa but also if he had a regular youth, an adopted mother and a lot of aunties.
Also it goes without saying that initially the Heavens are pretty petrified of Mama in a sort of;
'If she can manage Wukong, how strong must she be!?"
Without taking into the account the idea that maybe the reason Wukong actually respects and listens to her is that she's his mama and he lovers her.
SHRIEK OKAY @kaijufluffs SO I WAS FLOORED LEARNING THAT YOU'RE THE PERSON WHO DID THE SUN WUKONG MOM COMIC BECAUSE THAT IS LEGITIMATELY ONE OF MY FAVORITE JTTW-BASE COMICS AND NEEDLESS TO SAY I LOVE THIS AU!!!
Because YEAH Sun Wukong has so much love for his monkey family that provides a really interesting layer to his character, so needless to say I'm excited that you're putting together an AU that's specifically about exploring this! I do think as such that it fits pretty well with the general story of Xiyouji, even if you're making the Monkey King much more baby at the beginning. As it is since he started out a little smaller than a playing ball but did grow to a little shorter than 4 feet in the og classic, I think we can assume there was a period when he had some growing to do even if he was fully ambulatory from day 1 there. I also really like this AU because it really seems to be going further into where SWK's intense fear of and sadness about death would come from; we all have that, some more than others, but really emphasizing how much he loves his family and loves life provides a really good and really understandable motive for why he does what he does. I especially like the way too that you're using this as a way to emphasize SWK's defiance to every authority, in this case not just the natural order of birth-life-death but also the idea that one would have to become a human to have a shot at immortality/Enlightenment. He's happy being a monkey with his mama, aunties, friends and family!
I also genuinely think it's very in character for the book's events to have everyone baffled why SWK would have so much love and respect for an old lady monkey even though SWK consistently shows how much he loves his monkey family & acts with respect to people who respect him lmao.
Finaly asdgrwef that last image immediately made me think of those photos of mother monkeys tugging their kids by their tails when they try to wander off & get into trouble

prompt to continue the azure/wukong storyline
azures longing turns into something sharper; obsession.
when MK has a small fight with wukong’s husband azure’s mind randomly decides that “qi xiaotian is my son and this bastard is his kidnapper.”
maybe he puts a love potion into food he knows wukong likes and sent it home w/MK unknowingly. poor MK has to watch his baba get delirious and tired, eyes blown out leaning over the table mumbling azures name as the powerful potion kicks in
So I presume this is for the Art School AU. Unfortunately, the au is no magic. So, instead, you get this!
The news nearly made Azure fall over.
“Wukong is alive?!” He gripped the table tight, trying to steady himself, unsure of how to react to the news he had just been presented with. Some part of him screamed in anger- Wukong and his successor was the biggest challenge against his campaign. The other part of him, the weak part that he had given away so many centuries ago, screamed in joy.
No matter what, he could not silence that weak part of himself.
“Well, yes. The boy-” Of course, of course, it was Qi Xiaotian. Azure had found it too easy to give a part of that weakness to him- they both loved too easily. “And Macaque.” Also of course. “They managed to release him.”
“I…” Wait. He barely managed a chuckle, straightening. Oh, he was an idiot. He had forgotten what he had done, before he had left for the ridge. A simple backup plan. “They’re hiding out at the mountain.”
“Yes, of course they are, but what is so amusing?” Yellowtusk said. “I have not heard you laugh like that before.” He sounded tense, as if worried reality would begin to break again.
“Just a backup plan.” Azure straightened. “Wukong will not be an issue.”
Peng cackled as Yellowtusk's eyes went wide.
"You poisoned him?"
-_-
"Alright," Wukong clapped his hands together. Everything was going great! The plan was fully hammered out and everyone was on the same page. "Before we get to training, who wants snacks?"
Hands went up. Even Nezha, who he figured would be furious at the pause, even raised his hands.
"Yeah, I figured." Wukong chuckled. "I-"
"I got them!" Qi Xiaotian bounced up to his feet and zoomed into the kitchen. Immediately, noises began in the kitchen. Hopefully, Xiaotian was breaking into the cabinets designated for him and the others, not the giant fruit storage pantry.
As the others drifted around, Wukong turned to the art. His heart ached, just for a second, at the little drawn Camel Ridge Trio getting sucked into the scroll. He bit it back. Nobody needed him getting cold feet.
Even if he had questions.
-_-
“No. Nothing like that.” Azure had too many close calls with poison to ever use it. Besides, he didn’t want to kill Wukong, no matter what his anger claimed. “A moment of weakness, I admit.”
Yellowtusk’s eyes narrowed. “Not poison.” he said, slowly. “Something else.”
-_-
"Need some help?"
Xiaotian glanced back over his shoulder in time to see Pigsy press the pause button on the microwave. "Always." he said, barely fighting back a massive grin.
Son. Pigsy, for the first time Xiaotian could remember, had called him "son".
He knew Pigsy and Tang both viewed him as a son. He knew it. Too many stories had been told of Tnag calling himself Xiaotian's father figure from Pigsy gushing about him to his relatives. But it was the first time Xiaotian had ever heard it out loud.
Soon enough, a wide array of snacks was on the tray. "Need anything else?" Pigsy asked. "I was thinking water."
"Yeah, but the monkeys also make this really great peach juice. I'll grab it."
"Got it!" Pigsy picked up the tray and marched out.
-_-
There had been food in the weird cold box. Azure had not stayed long, the little vial burning in his pocket.
Too many solid things. Too much of a risk someone else would drink from that jug.
-_-
Xiaotian opened the fridge to grab the jug of peach juice and paused. An open peach yogurt was on the top shelf, right next to the others. It was something Xiaotian had found that Wukong had liked with great delight. Although, he had never seen his mentor not finish one . Even weirder, it looked completely full, as if Wukong had opened it, stirred it, and just set it back.
"Hey, Monkey King?"
His mentor's voice raised over the talking in the next room. "Yeah, bud?"
Xiaotian poked his head out, showing the opened yogurt. "Do you wanna finish this yogurt?"
Wukong raised a brow. "Huh. Didn't know I had that in there." He seemed worried for a second before shaking his head. 'Eh, probably forgot. Sure, bud!"
"Okay!" Xiaotian pulled out a spoon, set the yogurt on the other tray, and walked in with the jug and the rest of the snacks. The moment he set the tray down, Wukong grabbed the yogurt. He eyed it, looking like he was wondering if it was off. "I did come out of the blue," he suggested. "Maybe you didn't get to touch it?"
Wukong hummed. "Yeah." He scooped up a good dollop and bit down. He hummed. "Tastes good!"
-_-
The potion had slipped from the vial easily and, with a few stirs, had disappeared. Azure had set the yogurt back without another word and had left the small cottage.
Something slammed down. “You gave him a love potion?!” Yellowtusk bellowed.
“You gave him a love potion?!” Peng squawked before bursting into laughter. Their chuckles died down when a heavy jug full of wine sailed at their head.
“That is not okay!” Admittedly, Azure should’ve kept in mind how the others would react. Yellowtusk was the most sensitive to the idea. The number of times Wukong or DBK or even himself nearly got love potioned and had to be saved by Yellowtusk was ridiculous. “Why would you do that to him?!”
-_-
“Hey…Wukong? You okay there, bud?”
It was Macaque who first noticed. Of course it was, because Xiaotian was an idiot. His mentor looked weirdly pale, setting down the yogurt. Or, tried to set down the yogurt. It more fell out of his hand.
“Wukong!” Nezha actually sounded panicked, gripping his shoulders as the golden monkey slumped over. From where he sat, Xiaotian could see how his pupils had dilated. The lighter yellow was drowning out the gold. “What’s wrong?!”
“I…Azure…?” The words were slurred, Wukong pitching forward. Suddenly Macaque was there, leaning him back. “Where’s Azure…?” The slurred voice sounded distressed.
“He’s not here.” Nezha said, sounding like he was trying to be comforting. “He can’t get to you, Wukong, you’re safe.” If it was meant to be comforting, it didn’t work, based on the tears welling up.
“What’s wrong?” Xiaojiao said, grabbing Pigsy’s hand. She squeezed it as distress clouded her eyes. “What’s wrong with him?”
“I don’t know!” Xiaotian nearly whined, meeting his mentor’s clouded eyes.
Were they…pink?
-_-
“I just want to be happy with him.”

In the MK interfering, I could see wukong trying to be with azure because it's the "healthy" option he misses macaque so much and macaque in his heartbreak letting peng's jabs bring his confidence down back to pre jttw levels he doesn't want to be alone anymore, surely this is better than nothing. Both of them are absolutely miserable but hide it well
LMK season 4 spoilers...
.
.
I feel like MK is just the type of person to get drawn into "fairy tale logic" if that makes sense. His first experience with Macaque and Wukong meeting is when they have a huge, earth-shattering fight, so he's probably having a hard time seeing them together as a good thing (even if Macaque is not as much as a bad guy as he was back then)
So yeah, MK could easily be deceived into seeing Azure as a better option for Sun Wukong. Plus, shoving Macaque at this new bird uncle will keep him out of trouble and from getting too jealous of the Monkey King's cool new boyfriend. So MK thinks it works out for everyone!!
...but yes. It's not actually so great. Both Sun Wukong and Macaque are miserable without each other. Wukong is glad to see Azure Lion and all, and it's good to see he's a better person now too (as far as he knows) ... he does have fond feelings for the lion, but it's not the same.
Macaque is suuuper put down by his breakup with Wukong. He tends to favor anger as a way to express himself, so his grief and loneliness just manifest that way, and he ends up in shouting matches with Peng all the time (Peng always wins by reminding him that he doesn't deserve any better than this)
Anyway, the two monkeys don't see each other for awhile because of Azure and Peng's (and MK's) machinations.... but as fun as it is to leave them dramatically miserable, it's even more fun to add some cheesy romance tropes in there. You ever see that ending scene in Pride and Prejudice where it's a really foggy morning and the two meet up by chance out on a stroll because they're both just dying of longing to be with the other person who they think they've already ruined their chances with? ...Yeah. Like that. 🥰 but with more making out haha
