reading the actual iliad bc of song of achilles brainrot got me saying shit like “overmuch” and “upbraiding” and “rouses”
god fagles is the most recent translation i can currently get my hands on and he is readable which is better than most older translations but the bar is not particularly high.
can’t wait til i can get my hands on the (relatively) new caroline alexander trans. from 2016 pls girl helen has called herself a whore twice and zeus called hera a bitch and i know that’s not fully supported by the original greek

"Swiftly did the dream reach the fast ships of the Achaeans. It went off to Agamemnon, son of Atreus, and found him sleeping in his bed, drenched in divine slumber."

achilles vs. anakin
so I've been thinking--these 2 are similar AF:
has 1 divine parent
is the Chosen One...?
very cute uwu
close to their mom
BFF is a little more than that
ultimately chooses love over honor/others' praise every time
soldier who started too young
killed at least 1 kid that we know of
they're younger & less disciplined than their love interest
badass w/a weapon
berzerker rage followed by intense ugly cry
people judge them on their actions & label them as crazy
I guess their main differences are that Achilles wasn't ever taught to let go of passion or rage, while Anakin was told those are feelings that lead to the Dark Side of the Force. Anakin had lived as a slave while Achilles had grown up as a prince(ss) who took classes.

Young Odysseus introduces his son to the goddess Athena
(Alternative title: Telemachus meets his fairy Godmother)
Creator’s note:
Does this picture look blurry to you? Like even if you click on the image to enlarge it? I don’t know why but I can’t seem to get tumblr to show the full resolution image. I worked hard to make faces that actually look like faces for once but now they’re just blurry blobs 😭. Anybody know how to fix? EDIT: thank you all for the feedback! I’m glad it is not blurry for you!

The EPIC Circe Saga making Odysseus' love for Penelope what ultimately saves him from Circe just healed a massive hole in my heart.
Because YES the Odyssey like all of Ancient Greek Mythology has a misogynist streak a mile wide, but that primarily comes down to the written text, preserved by Athens--no one hates women more than Athens--and translated into English for centuries by sexist men who wanted to see a powerful woman tamed by a man.
But the Odyssey and the Iliad come from ancient oral tradition. They were told and retold and everyone, EVERYONE, got a say in how to interpret them. Why can't we?
Why can't the story be: Odysseus' love for his wife and his family is what saves him. Hermes tells him the only way to protect himself from Circe is to seduce her. Agamemnon, who lied and betrayed his wife, warns him that trusting women will get him killed. But Odysseus doesn't listen. Instead, he passes Circe's test of character where others failed. He trusts Penelope and does right by her and she does the same for him. The secret of their marriage bed serves as a symbol of loyalty and commitment upheld by them both, not just Penelope.
Why can't it be that? Greek Myth is already brutal, why do we have to willfully make it more so?

Fun fact about the underworld saga:
‘558 men who died under your command’ from The Underworld, combined with ‘43 left under your command’ from Ruthlessness, doesn’t add up to 600 men.
Which means that the guy who fell off Circe’s roof and died is canon to Epic the musical.

I will never understand how Odysseus has all the braincells while also having none of them at the same exact time. He is an amazing war general and is insanely smart but has the attention span of a rat fuelled by the need to cause chaos simply because he is bored. He can't listen to one thing while getting distracted by the thing he was specifically told not to touch.

"ruthlessness" is a devastating song, no argument, but just how devastating it is always gives me goosebumps when i listen to it. i love that jay understands that silence can be as powerful as sound, and that's what really drives the loss of his men home, for me.
think about it; 600 men on a dozen ships initially, so that's about 50 people per ship. the 43 men left are solely on odysseus's vessel.
the men screaming his name, the wind roaring, and suddenly, everyone is gone. the silence is so loud. so final.
it's not like they fell overboard, and are screaming for help in the waves. they're gone immediately, and the sudden silence is so chilling.

The Odyssey, but if Odysseus just got to stay home and chill with his son and goddess bestie.
been obsessing over this musical project lately.
Can't stop imagining the moments Odysseus missed. Little mischievous joys, teaching moments etc. In this scene, Odysseus teaches Telemachus how to braid hair and Athena shares profound wisdom with two of her favorite mortals.
