On the topic of genuine criticism, I have my one and only one about Chronus Seven.
Was the romance necessary?
I’ll answer that question for everyone.
Short answer is: Yes, because a meaningful connection between Benji and Wife needs to be established for the ending to make a meaningful impact.
Longer answer: Maybe, maybe not. There was probably another option.
My Reasoning:
The romance was a straight forward, no nonsense way of establishing some kind of connection between the audience and Benji.
HOWEVER
They literally establish that they will not fall in love with each other because it’s would be cheating on the Listener’s future self.
But by Episode 3, they’re in love.
Usually, I can let these type of things slide as artistic differences, but for this one I cannot.
It is clearly established that those two falling in love is weird and kinda wrong (not that it being weird is the issue)
BUT HEAR ME OUT.
It didnt need to happen, at least mutually.
I understand that it’s love, and it’s unpredictable, even in the most unlikely situations.
But It just doesn’t make sense.
In my exprience, whenever two people agree not to pursue a romantic relationship with each other but still keep in contact, one person usually maintains that.
It would have been fine if one or the other loved the other, but BOTH?? Unacceptable /j
Honestly they could have just been friends, and, to boot, the agreement they had was never brought up again.
TL;DR
I strongly maintain that Benji and Wife didn’t need to be in love with each other during Chronus Seven, and I don’t know the difference between criticism and having artistic differences.

simon fresh out of the shower, smelling like soap and the cologne you got him, with notes of sandalwood and musk. his blond hair now light brown from dampness and his skin warm as he pulls you into a hug. his arms revealed from the boxy white t-shirt he has on, tattooed arm on full display as it runs along your body.
“mornin’ love,” simon greets, his voice low and still laced with drowsiness. your face is pressed against his chest, taking a deep breath to smell him.
“mmm, you smell so good,” you hum, standing on your toes to sniff his throat, your nose accidentally bumping his skin. for some reason he shivers, hands squeezing your hips a little harder. damn, he liked that.
“yeah, darlin’? want another smell?” he jokes, pulling the collar of his white shirt to expose his collarbone.
laughing you give a soft kiss to his exposed skin, pecking along his neck and across his cheek, his stubble rough against your lips. kissing him softly your lips linger on each others for a second, loving the way your lips fit against his.
there’s smiles on both of your faces when you pull away, a slight pink to simon’s cheeks. he feels giddy on the inside, chest constricting with love as he watches you walk away, off to do whatever pretty things like you do on saturday mornings.

Genuinely being a single woman in my thirties, living alone, is such a mixed blessing sometimes. I do love my house and when I'm here I literally never want to leave. But on the other hand, I do get tired of leaving to go hang out with people, even though I love seeing them. Especially because I have such a great group of friends but they live all over the place, geographically, and therefore most of them don't know each other. And I actually really love hosting? But I never have people in my house because logistically it's always more practical for me to go to them than vice versa.
But sometimes I buy new old dishes and wanna just have a little fancy wizard party, but all my guests are far away. Please may I have the teleport spell. Or a high-speed commuter rail system.

I recently had to do a project in one of my psych classes, and man, I knew that CBT was used for every little thing, but seeing over and over, "do CBT! CBT is the best for every mental illness!" was so jarring. I'm absolutely biased because of my own experiences, but I just don't think it's as universal a treatment model as it's touted.
If you didn't benefit from CBT, it's not because you're lazy or didn't try hard enough or lacked intelligence or foresight into your own needs. Frankly, it's a therapy model that (I think) shouldn't be the only readily-accessible model and among the only therapy models covered by insurance. Some of us should not be treated in a CBT model and that's okay. It's not a sign of poor character or unreasonable demands, and if you don't think it's a model that works for you, then it's your right to express that!
#mental health#mental health advocacy#it was just so annoying because every resource i could access for this project often ONLY recommended cbt and#that just doesn't seem helpful for a good chunk of people#because i know i never benefitted from that model of therapy#obligatory: i am not against this therapy. me having a negative experience with it is not indicative that i believe it should be abolished'#if it works for you: KEEP DOING IT. cbt is not inherently harmful for MANY people and it's a good and valuable tool for many#but the overemphasis of cbt as the Only Therapy Model You Need sends this message that YOU failed...#...if you don't miraculously recover with that therapy model. it often feels like you'll Fail Recovery/Therapy and you're now a Bad Person#i've tried for over a decade to stick out cbt with a dozen therapists to boot. so i think i know a thing or two about my experiences with it#and overall its an unimpressive model (for me) as someone whos had a history with abuse and miscellaneous mental knickknacks rattling around#it's also frustrating because i genuinely like psych and i love learning about people#it's just. i'm tired of only being exposed to cbt (because i hate it honestly)#i feel similarly about cbt as i do with sigmund fucking frued#anyway i just want other insane people (affectionate) to remember that they deserve to not beat themselves up over this#if you're an insane person reading this: i love you i love you i love you i love you#i will share a slice of cake and homemade bread with you <3

I hate people who legitimately expected rick Riordan to write the tsats book for mature audiences and whine when it obviously wasn't and scream "well he's aware that he has a lot of adult fans so he should accommodate us" LIKE?? NO??? THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS???
YES, Rick Riordan IS aware you exist but you are no longer his target audience. You can appreciate the book as an adult for being great literature but if you're looking for a mature book THEN GO READ A FUCKING BIG BOY BOOK??
There's plenty of great YA fantasy out there.
Rick isn't going to stop writing books for middle schoolers just because you feel entitled to it?? That's not how it fucking works???

everybody wants to talk about how tragic the ascended astarion or failed durge ending is, nobody wants to talk about how deeply fucked up the ending for an illithid tav who romanced wyll is like..."i know i asked you to marry me and i know you said we'd be together forever no matter what and i know you loved and supported me after i was also transformed into a hideous, feared and misunderstood creature but um. this is a bad look for me so how about i just keep you bricked up in my basement? oh yeah i totally promise i'll feed you and look after you, i totally promise i'll dance with you again sometimes, yeah don't worry about that, you can be my little secret..."
like what sort of jane eyre bertha mason 'tell me about the rabbits, george' hell is that!!!!!! that's not a happy ending that's setting the scene for environmental story telling 100 years down the line when the latest plucky adventurer plunders the duke's secret basement and finds a dead mind flayer mummified in a luxuriously furnished bricked up room gripping a diary where they extensively detail seeing their love less and less until finally no-one comes any more and they're forced to wonder whether something's happened to wyll or if they've been deliberately forsaken, the duke's secret shame left to wither away out of sight and out of mind...

also final word on this probably- I *like* Joyce Messier a great deal as a character. I think she's cool and interesting. I find it fascinating that she tends to approach things very bluntly. the words she uses and the manner in which she analyzes things, this is sort of an instance of a character who knows exactly *what she is* and articulates it in a manner congruent with the writers of the game. she is, as she says wryly but honestly, "a bourgeois woman". i cant think of too many rich people who would without prompting and prodding, self identify with marxist social taxonomies in this way, even with a thin veil of ironic self deprecation. She's educated. she knows the words and the motivating logics of class analysis. and shes *cool*. harry picks that up. honesty is cool. bluntness is cool. cynicism is cool. she is quite open about her place in the world and how she conceives of it. unlike a lot of other powerful figures in the game, i dont think shes completely swallowed by self justifying rhetoric the way, say, sunday friend is. or she is up to a point. she knows about countercultural movements and she has affinities for them and is also aware that they inevitably are consumed by capital. (this, by the way, is kind of complex in that like. ok its a depressing reality but also i think if the de team was fully bought into that line of thinking, they would not make this game. it is telling that joyce of all people would critique cindy on the basis of capital subsuming revolutionary art. I dont think joyce is wrong per se, but i think she is drawn to that line of thinking because it is *very comforting for someone of her class position to dismiss the value and power of revolutionary art and critique of capital* just a thought) She's disgusting in that her power is not rightfully hers. her position is not rightfully hers. she is actively repressing and oppressing others in service of disgusting, semi-fascistic, hypercapitalist forces. shes enjoying the comforts and benefits that such a role allows her. shes disgusting shes frustrating shes profoundly arrogant (as her clash with evrart claire proves definitively). Her self satisfied idiocy is what allows her to play with fire and foolishly assume she cannot be burned. She's smart but her comfortable position puts the blinders on her and so she's also pretty fucking stupid. and shes also deeply deeply sad. I empathize. I pity her. She's so fucking sad. I don't think she is drawn to self medication and self destruction through constant pale exposure or all that rueful nostalgic rumination for no reason. She knows what she is to the world and she knows what she's doing and she's too cowardly and comfortable and self interested to change, but she's too self-aware to ignore it completely. I think she probably dislikes herself to some degree and i think its destroying her. Like most of the cast of the game, she's complex and deeply human. She's hateful, but I also think she is too well realized to hate, at least not for me.

You cannot convince me that this didn't happen.
Also, yes, I know, said I was gonna get the second part of the fic out. But I've been busy the past few days and out of the house, so now I can finally sit down and do shit. And I draw faster than I write, and I wanted to christen my new art tablet with a meme of an art piece. And the comic was mostly started.
This thing, this damn comic, has been sitting in my folder for about two years I think. The reason I say that is cause the original version I drew that's in my old style I started like a year or so ago. Never finished it, never plan on finishing it. Looking at my old art style makes me cringe lol. But, I actually started this one like, back in July I think.
