13.) What is their relationship with their family like?

Nicholas had a good relationship with his parents. It was only ever the three of them, which meant that Nicholas was able to form close relationships with them. Nicholas and his father, Anthony, had always gotten along pretty well. His father taught him to play acoustic guitar, something that Nicholas kept up as a stress relieving hobby. His mother taught him a lot, as he was mostly homeschooled due to his parents’ careers as traveling musicians.

Nicholas has a much more complicated relationship with his adopted father, Valen Silverworth. They’ve always been a little awkward and Valen didn’t always handle Nicholas’s grief and anger very well. However, he respects Valen’s talent and knowledge a lot. Nicholas and Valen have a lot of arguments after Nicholas graduated from Hogwarts. They’re very distant in general, though. They don’t have the greatest coping methods in general.

15.) What do they like/dislike about themselves?

Jude likes his hockey work ethic. He put in a lot of hours to get his skills up to high level competition. The move to England really upended his entire practice and ambitions, much to his distress. He also likes his intelligence. It’s a bit superficial and Jude doesn’t always apply his intelligence (or his work ethic).

Jude dislikes how long his frustrations linger. He’s very grumpy about the move to England for nearly three months. He really hates that he can’t let certain things go easily. He also hates his allergy to bees, but there’s not much that Jude can do about that. The allergy is there, it’s bad and it’s not going to get better.

why do some popular things have such small fandoms, in your opinion? like, John Wick is incredibly popular but has less than 2k fics on ao3 and there doesn't seem to be a big fandom presence on tumblr. there's shows with 10+ seasons that have incredibly small fandoms as well.

i know not every fandom is going to be, say, Harry Potter or Supernatural levels (especially if it's an older show and fics have been lost to time- i've heard ER lost quite a lot) but it's just... odd to me, i guess.

The majority of things don't get fanfic fandoms.

There are some trends though. Certain genres are more likely to generate them than others. SFF is pretty likely. Crime dramas are reasonably likely, whether that's people slashing buddy cops on AO3 or lead canon het on FFN.

Incomplete-feeling canons are a bit more likely, usually due to plot holes or a crappy ending that people want to fix—but not so crappy that everyone just gives up in disgust.

Relatedly, things where the art part isn't too intimidating are more likely than ones where the big draw is that author's exact way of writing or the fantastically subtle and moving acting in some arty movie about social issues.

Serial media are way, way more likely to generate a fic fandom than one-offs, and having a certain number of hiatuses but not ones that are too long helps. You want some gaps where people have time to make stuff before it's instantly jossed, but you do need new canon to reinvigorate a fandom periodically.

Things just being well known by lots of people does help relative to a similar canon that few people saw, but exact audience size isn't the main factor.

Some tasty character dynamics help a lot. Maybe shippy, maybe more found family. A world that people want to play more with also helps. Even the gen-focused fandoms tend to care a lot about the latter two. They don't just write about any old canon. There have to be certain hooks.

John Wick does seem like it fits some of the standard criteria. There's more than one movie. It's fun, dumb genre stuff, not super high art.

TBH, having more than like 5 fics already means it's a success as a fic fandom, so part of it is just your frame of reference. I know you say you don't expect HP, but you should be expecting the norm to be way under 100 fics, not nearly 2k. That's part of it.

But I suspect the big reason is that a lot of people find the films relatively complete as-is.

They're set in the real world (-ish), so the setting isn't that interesting to explore with a bunch of OCs in the way that people write their own HP or Naruto casts. People like the lead, but I don't think they fixate on his relationships to other characters. (Checking AO3, it looks like some people are writing basically John/self, which makes sense.)

For much of the audience, it's all about watching him use a lot of guns. So many guns. All of the guns.

Once the big screen spectacle is done, I don't know that people really want more unless it's more action movies with more visual awesomeness.

IDK, I don't think I've seen any of these beyond some clips, so maybe I'm missing something.

What was the HP fandom on AO3 writing in 2022?

some stats diving, ship- and femslash-focused.

default filters used for everything unless indicated otherwise: language: english, no crossovers. only on AO3 (obviously)

hmm someday i'll do a yearly breakdown maybe.

for reference, there were ~324,676 total works in the HP tag updated in 2022 and before, so the top ship Drarry makes up 16% of HP works.

ships in this list but not the former: jegulus, dorlene, and regulus & sirius.

ships in the former list but not this one: snarry, sevmione, tomarry.

harry the character is tagged in 42.7% of all HP works.

the list of "fastest-growing HP character tags in 2022" was almost identical to this. sirius, remus, james, and lily went up one place, severus and ginny down by one, and ron dropped by two. no change in the top 3.

i'm thinking of doing one for HP ships but am unsure which ships to do. you can get a rough estimation from graph #2 though!

A closer look at just the 2022 ships:

filters used: english, no crossovers, works updated between 2022-01-01 and 2022-12-31.

color = ship type by canonical gender. outlined = canon ship

this is probably a better view though:

a mix of all ships in either of the top two graphs (excluding the platonic ship regulus & sirius by definition of the otp:true filter), plus remadora.

open to more ship suggestions, but at some point i need to think about a size cutoff

anyway: some interesting strata here:

snarry+sevmione at the >60-70% mark. (do all snape ships show this trend? just crossgen snape ships? what about other crossgen ships? to be investigated)

grindeldore is an expected outlier due to the different canonical time period

marauders era tends to have more fics-with-multiple-tagged-ships. unexpected - there are so many more named lightning gen characters! lightning gen fandom more splintered/fragmented?

clustering of canon couples at the 15-20% mark, surprisingly consistent across marauders vs lightning gen

oooooo i could soapbox about this dorlene outlier for days. (tldr: if you want to write OFCxOFC that's all well and good, but writing OFCxOFC as what's quite clearly a background ship and a background ship alone? i think we can do better.)

Multi-shipping & ship overlap

marauders era is dominated by one main fanon pairing. no other “/” pairing with either of these two characters makes the top 10 list. in contrast, wrt lightning gen, Draco, Harry, and Hermione are all shipped with each other, with all three combinations making the top 10 list.

there is one pair of marauders era ships with ship overlap, though. which means stats! also included remadora as an additional comparison point since that's another big overlapping ship

jegulus AND jily are tagged in 675 works, out of 3944 works (17%) where all three of james, lily, and regulus are tagged.

meanwhile drarry + dramione: 80 works tagging both ships, out of 8128 works tagging all 3 characters, with an overlap of <1% fics tagging both ships. these two do not mix.

oh, interesting, people are writing genderbend wolfstar? *checks fics* -- no they're not. 'nuff said.

2) instead, tried adding the otp:true filter (2402 fics)

very similar results -- both lists had the same 9 femslash ships. Bellamione (#1 on both), Fleurmione (#2), Pansmione (#3/#4), Dorlene (#3/#5), Linny (#4/#6), Cissamione (#5/#6), Ginmione (#7/#9), Marylily (#7/#9), Ginsy (#8/#10).

i don't see any obvious trends re. which ships are ranked higher on one list vs the other.

a real quick rating comparison between categories, using the otp:true filter:

"angst" and "fluff" were the top two tags used for most categories so i decided to try a bit of:

<1 = more angst works than fluff, >1 = more fluff works than angst.

the other top tags for each category:

F/F and F/M: both romance (#3)

M/M: established relationship (#3)

Multi: polyamory (#3)

Other: au canon divergence (#3). "other" was used to refer to a mix of NB/trans character, thingfic, and x reader.

Gen: au canon divergence (#1). i was worried about using the otp:true filter for gen fic but the top two tags were indeed & tags (harry & severus, regulus & sirius).

Hi there! Bit of a weird question, and I’m not sure if this is the right blog for this, but… best laptop for privacy? I’m going to go to uni in a year and my parents have said that they’re going to buy me a laptop, which is awesome, except— I don’t know which one to chose? I’ve never had a laptop before but I try to take being private online as seriously as I can, and so I don’t really care… well, like, I do care that the laptop has good storage and works and stuff, but I care mostly about how private it is. Which one supports adding privacy-related stuff the best? Which one steals your data the least? I… am actually not sure what kind of questions I should be asking, since… again, never had a laptop before, and I don’t know what about its make makes it private (other than like general online privacy practices across all devices), so I was just wondering if you had any recommendations for me? Tldr: don’t care about fancy features, just want a laptop that more or less works, but would love privacy to be the main focus. This can sort of come at the expense of convenience - I don’t care it if’s harder to set up, use, etc., so long as I can connect to the internet with it.

So the hardware is pretty agnostic on this, the place where privacy is going to become an issue is in the software.

Windows loves to track you and send your data back to homebase; Apple is a walled garden that doesn't let people get deep into configurations; linux is intimidating for a lot of people.

Your actual best bet on privacy would be to get a laptop with no OS and install a linux distro on it, but it sounds like that's probably not something that's terribly approachable for you. So in that case I'd recommend getting a Windows laptop (mac prices aren't worth it) and going through this list to change the settings to ensure better privacy.

HOWEVER please note that you should be getting a laptop with a full OS. Windows has an option for "windows 11s" or "windows 10s" and first off you should be going with 11 at this point but second that "s" means that there are pretty strict limitations on what you can do as a user in terms of configuration and installation.

If you are willing to pay a bit more for Windows 11 Pro instead of windows 11 Home, the pro license cuts off some of the more annoying tracking that Windows does automatically, but I'd say you're better off simply getting the home license and really digging into the settings and getting to know it and setting it up for yourself.

BUT if it's at all possible, honestly I'd say get a bare metal laptop (that means it's just the hardware, no software, you need to install an operating system before you do anything) and install linux. HOWEVER keep in mind that there are some significant downsides to using linux as a student, mostly that you'll likely run into software at some point that you won't be able to install. Also if you're not already pretty good with computers it can be difficult to keep a linux machine running (but very easy to make it private; that's the tradeoff - you can make it more secure more easily, but you really have to know how to fix your own computer if something goes wrong.)

For your situation, again, I think a Windows 11 Home laptop with the settings adjusted is your best bet.

Absolutely positively don't get a chromebook (you've got no control of the settings on a chromebook and the thing is made to feed information to google) and don't get a mac (you can get better specs on a PC at a lower cost).

For an idea of budget on this, I'd say you can probably get something from Dell, Lenovo, or HP for around $650-1000 dollars that's got decent specs (12th gen or newer i5 processor, 16gb RAM, 512GB SSD) and maybe something more like $500-800 from acer, asus, or samsung. Whatever computer you end up getting, you should get the added drop protection warranty because that means the manufacturer will fix your laptop if you drop it, something that is a bigger deal for college students than most people (because of your environment you're more likely to end up with drop damage than a lot of people AND because you're a college student you probably won't be able to afford to fix or replace the computer)

What do you like about Marie and Jordan individually and what do you like about them as a pair?

For Marie, I just love her so much. First of all, I am always happy to see a black girl lead in any kind of diverse, non-stereotypical, non-sassy-side character role like this.

But I also appreciated how realistic she was. Like, I understood almost every choice she made. I saw people get mad at her at the start for not always doing the altruistic, "right thing", but for most people, self-preservation comes first. She didn't owe those other characters anything (especially after how they treated her) and I loved that she had a back bone and would actually talk back to people. But at her core, she is still a good person despite everything that has happened to her and still chooses not to be corrupted by Vought's influence once she understands the true material cost.

For Jordan, they're just such a nuanced character. One, I always have a soft-spot for the Lancer character archetype. The highly capable, second best, who can never quite out-do the main character (e.i. bakugo, reki (from sk8), Ron from HP (fuck jkr, but no other examples are coming to me atm)), and Jordan is just that. Like, yeah, they were kind of a bitch at the start, but it's so clear that they are secretly a softie and the world and their experiences have forced them to have a tough shell. Also, their powers as an allegory for gender identity, yes, it's on the nose (although, as someone who grew up reading 90s/2000s manga like Ranma 1/2, not that unheard of), but I think the show handled questions of their identity really well.

And finally for Limoreau...

idk where to start. tbh, as someone who has been hyper fixating on characters and ships since high school, I never really have a clear explanation of why I ship the characters I do. I either like it or I don't. But Limoreau is such a pleasant surprise because the chemistry was there from the start, but it felt like one of those queer dynamics that the writers would be too scared to pursue (think Arthur/merlin or Gojo/Geto). I think the fact that our MAIN PAIRING is a queer, interracial couple with no white people, shouldn't be as revolutionary as it is in 2023, but it is! I hope this is a positive direction for on-screen storytelling.

But also everyone loves a classic "enemies to lovers" (yes, I know they're not EtL in the true sense, but I consider Rivals-to-lovers as a subset of EtL, so I'm using it as an umbrella term). I think the reason people like EtL dynamics (Especially in het pairings) is that there is always an underlying respect beneath the "hatred". Like, to see someone as a threat, you have to see them as at least an equal.

It was clear from the start that Marie and Jordan were more alike than different and it was Vought and the corrupt nature of Godolkin pushing them to compete. They're both lonely in different ways, and I love the idea of them finding acceptance and a home with each other (Also all three actors are extremely attractive and have great chemistry, so that never hurts).

Do I wish their relationship had been paced out a bit more? Yes. But that was my issue with all of Gen V. I think the whole show would have benefitted from 12 eps, instead of 8, because development was needed in most areas.

I also just want to note, for all the people saying their relationship "came out of nowhere", I truly feel that if Marie looked like Erin Moriarty and Jordan looked like Chace Crawford, most people would have clocked the romance from the beginning, jus saying...

this is the team in some more detail! for reference, i use the PC markings to designate which IVs are perfect in HP/ATK/DEF/SPA/SPD/SPE order. this was really helpful while doing the breeding process... all three of these guys were bred manually in gen 4 without the use of RNG manipulation. i mention this because it's a known fact about me that i love RNG manip but i did it the long way this time. oh and trick on furret, nasty plot on mismagius, and curse on umbreon are all egg moves. as you can imagine this took forever because gen 4's breeding mechanics are wack. getting anything more than 3 perfect IVs is pretty much a lottery crapshoot, the fourth perfect IV on mismagius was insanely lucky. but ANYWAY

i made this team because i really like furret but it's known to be a pretty weak pokemon. it has the normal type curse of a wide movepool but not enough stats to support it, and it doesn't even have a particularly useful ability or anything. i thought it would be really funny if i made it work despite that, and i saw the way: furret gets trick!!

trick swaps the user's held item with the opponent's, so in this case furret gives the opponent a choice scarf and it receives whatever the opponent is holding. "trick scarf" strategies have been used in pokemon for a long time, since it locks the opponent into using the same move over and over unless they switch - and that's the important part. "unless they switch". see gen 4's AI has a weird quirk - the opponent will never switch out if they have a choice scarf tricked onto them, it just doesn't seem to register what's happening. this issue with the battle logic was fixed in gen 5, and choice scarf doesn't exist in gen 3. (choice band DOES exist in gen 3, but giving your opponent a choice band is a lot more dangerous. also, choice scarf has the added benefit of letting your trick user more easily outspeed the opponent to use trick first, locking them into whatever they pressed that turn)

TLDR; gen 4 is pretty much the sole place furret would ever be able to fill this trick scarf role effectively, and i wanted to capitalize on it. because it would be funny. it's main other two moves are substitute and baton pass because the hope is that the scarf locks the opponent into a status afflicting move, a stat boosting move, etc, pretty much anything that doesn't deal damage, causing furret to be able to set up substitute completely for free and then baton pass that substitute over to the next pokemon. knock off is to give furret a little more utility (coming back in later in the battle to knock off an item can be useful) and also just a damage option - like what if the opponent is on their last pokemon and it's on 1 HP from a focus sash and all i have left is furret, lmao. that sort of thing.

while breeding furret i made sure that its HP, one of its defensive stats (ended up being special defense), and speed were perfect. more HP = more substitute health for the incoming pokemon it's baton passed to, more bulk = furret can last a little longer even if the opponent is locked into a damaging move, and speed...

well the fastest pokemon in the battle tower that isn't already holding a choice item is a specific electrode set - it reaches a speed stat of 211. i did calculations and determined that with a perfect speed IV and jolly nature, furret would only need exactly 156 speed EVs to outspeed that electrode with choice scarf, effectively letting it trick scarf everything in the tower without fail, barring opponents getting lucky with quick claw/brightpowder/lax incense. that gave me a lot more room to dump a bunch of EVs into HP and defense, rounding off the furret well. she has 244 HP EVs instead of the max 252 because having an odd HP value (191 in this case) allows furret to use substitute four times from max HP, while 252 would push her HP stat to 192, only allowing the use of substitute three times. the rest of the EVs are dumped into defense for a bit of extra bulk (108 defense EVs to be precise)

the other two pokemon are more straightforward. i needed pokemon that could take advantage of the trick scarf strategy and mismagius and umbreon ended up being really appealing options. first off, they can both stack stats behind a substitute if the opponent is locked into a status move - mismagius can freely spam nasty plot three times to max out its special attack and umbreon can freely spam curse to max out its attack/defense and minimize its speed.

as for specifics, mismagius is pretty frail so the rest of his movepool is oriented around type coverage, and both his special attack and speed are maxed for maximum fast damage. life orb is added for even more damage, and to let mismagius still get off a powerful hit if in a situation where he can't use nasty plot. (it's worth mentioning i put the extra 4 EV points into special defense and not HP to once again keep the HP an odd number, allowing for one more hypothetical use of life orb.) mismagius also has a whopping three immunities - normal, fighting, and ground moves (because of levitate) all don't affect mismagius, which means if furret locks the opponent into any of those three move types, mismagius can STILL set up for free, although maybe not behind a substitute. (furret even baits fighting moves because it's a normal type! lmao)

umbreon on the other hand is incredibly bulky in the EV department and has the ability to toxic stall with protect and its defense boosts from curse + leftovers recovery - i needed a bulky pokemon to round out the team because furret and mismagius are both frail. i wanted to toss more EVs into special defense, but physical defense before curse boosting just ended up being too important of a consideration due to extremely powerful threats like choice band aerodactyl running around, so he has 244 HP EVs, 220 defense EVs, and 44 special defense EVs, with an impish nature. payback was the chosen damaging option because it doubles from 50 base power to 100 base power when umbreon goes last, and uh... well with all those curse boosts umbreon is pretty much always going to underspeed lol. similar to mismagius he also has a pretty nice immunity to take advantage of, psychic!

oh and on top of all of that, mismagius is weak to dark and ghost moves, both of which umbreon resist... and umbreon is weak to bug and fighting moves, which mismagius resists and is immune to respectively! so they really complement each other.

anyway this team isn't perfect but that's kind of not the point, you can only do so much with furret lol. the main issue is when the opponent leads with an extremely strong attacker, such as a muscle band or wise glasses pokemon with a lot of coverage - this team really relies on being gifted time to set up to work, and since i lead with furret there are occasional games where furret can't do a whole lot before going down, and then it's like a 2v3. umbreon's bulk is handy for these situations but it can still result in some close calls.

but yeah i just wanted to write this out because i put a lot of thought into this team and it would pain me if no one knew how much i thought about it LOL. hope someone got something out of reading this SDFKFSDK

But Rosmerta, how do you write canon-compliant fics about LBGTQ+ characters when there’s no explicit representation of that community in the books?

I’m glad you asked! TTB is a canon-compliant Discord server and therefore hosts canon-compliant fests; however, that’s not meant to be restrictive. Just because a character is not stated to be gay or asexual or nonbinary doesn’t mean they’re not! All that canon-compliance means at TTB is that the fic doesn’t alter canon events, including endgame pairings mentioned in the epilogue.

Here are some examples of LGBTQ+ characterisations and ships that would be considered canon-compliant by TTB definition (these aren’t prompts or an exhaustive list by any means, just some examples):

Harry, Ginny, Hermione, or Ron discovering bisexuality later in life (men and women being married isn’t inherently heterosexual, afterall)

A next gen character being trans or nonbinary

Asexual Charlie Weasley

Same-sex ships that don’t alter endgame couples; there are too many to list, but here’s a few: Dean/Seamus, Minerva/Poppy, Sirius/Remus, Lavender/Parvati, Katie/Alicia, Albus/Scorpius

Harry and Hermione having a conversation/realisation about Grindeldore

Elongated Emperor's Pokemon Infopost

hi!!! everyone!! This is a bit different from what i usually do A year ago, I've had these paradox pokemon designs sitting in the gutter, getting extremely dusty, so now I'm giving them a fresh new redesign and additional info about them!!

These pokemons are based off of @diamondpastry's OC, Longkii !!

here's what he looks like. but this post isn't about him, it's about my thing. so shoo longkii

paradox pokemons are essentially variants of existing pokemon but reimagined into what they would look like in the past or in the future. it's much more complicated than that but i think i would be here all day if i have to explain everything throughly.

i will explain all the things about this big guy and go into his game info if he were to be in the gen 9 pokemon games, so let's get started on his design!!!

The main design inspiration for EE is that of the caterpillar and the man-eating worm. i can easily imagine a dangerous, giant, fat bug like this living in the past, and Longkii's very long body can easily be described as a worm. why would a bug have feathers and horns though? this is because paradox pokemon usually have very ridiculous features!

take the paradox version of Volcarona and Suicune for example. Slither Wing(left), despite being a bug pokemon, is covered with fur and has a rather out-of-place dinosaur tail. Walking Wake(right) on the other hand, changed from a leopard to a raptor and has two tails!! its kinda sick ngl

these design philosophy are stuff i tried to incorporate in Elongated Emperor. I also tried to make it as colorful as possible and cover it with markings, much like a primitive animal.

The crown Longkii sports in the og design gets changed into red feathers, much like a peacock's feather that it uses to attract a female peacock. Instead of attracting a mate however, EE uses its feathers to attract its next meal. the red circles around the arms also for the same use, it isn't there just for show!

these two things have psychic, hypnotizing properties, which explains the secondary Psychic type.

I also want to explain the general personality and vibe i wanted to show through EE's design. The giant and tall stature shows a bit an imposing vibe, and its plump body is a sign of wealth and royalty, much like how fat people were seen in ancient civilizations. EE clearly does not need to do a lot to get a full meal everyday.

The colorful feathers and the markings on its face and fingers is there to show that it dresses to impress! To be a king, you have to look like one- no speck of dirt, no unkempt feathers. It wants to look as beautiful as possible, so no one would suspect that it hides a filthy and monsterous side to them....

Game Data

this is the spread i made for EE's base stats! together it totals up to 570. i also want to preface that this is the first time that i've made up base stats for a pokemon so sorry if this is a really bad spread!! i would love to learn and improve for future project.

when making this, i wanted EE to basically be a bulky physical attacker with very slow speed to make up for it's bulk.

its super high health is also supported by its unique ability, Prosperity! it essentially functions as a Big Root, where it heals an additional 30% HP when EE uses a move that heals itself. this will be made much more relevant when i get to its moveset.

here are the pokedex entries! and no, i'm not telling you where the mouth is located, its more fun to see you figure it out for yourself !

i also wanted to write a lot more, here were some of my other ideas:

facts about it lounging around in caves

when a meal is too malnourishes, it hypnotizes the pokemon to stuff itself until it grows fat, then it will be eaten

facts on how it has the capacity to swallow an entire arbok whole

Learnsets

lastly, here are the moves EE will learn throughout leveing! i have also made tm learnsets, but it's too long so i will be putting the sheet link for everyone to look at at the end of this post.

obviously, most of their attacking moves will deal physical damage as they have a higher attack than special attack. most paradox pokemon usually start out with pretty strong moves already so i also copied that as well. i also added a lot of healing moves at the beginning, and then a big power up in the form of Leech Life and other draining moves to match with its ability.

You can also notice that there's some moves that involves biting, this is in purpose to show that it has teeth :) The rest of the attacking moves involve them thrashing their body around. Given their shape, they shouldn't learn any high-precision moves.

I should also mention the highlighted move, Fast Food. this is a signature move of EE made by a friend in Dia's server, Gold! so tysm for this idea.

Fast Food - Elongated Emperor rushes to take a ferocious bite of the target that can last 3-6 turns. If the target is holding a Berry, there's heightened chance of it biting longer. Restores 5% of health per hit. (+1 priority)

man i am having a lot of trouble building a squad for IS2 ending 4. ive zeroed in on Nightingale and Specter Alter to hold the main choke but it feels like unless i have a bunch of attack speed collectibles or i just cheese with Excessiveness i never have the damage to punch through before my main line collapses. you got any hot tips?

Let's go part by part.

Red circle is where you want to engage. Remember to not place your units adjacent to each other, so as to not get mulched by Playwright's cross explosions. Purple is where you want to engage Playwright with intent to kill. Remember to save your burst for when he's under 50% HP (phase 2) because that's when he becomes VERY bulky (2000 DEF and 90 RES baseline!). Green star is where you engage Playwright only if you have something like Dreambind Castle or insane DP gen that allows you to build a frontline and still have the DP to spare on killing preparations (for example, a spawncamp Pozemka S3 + Typewriter).

Let's talk about the frontline, the main difficulty of this map, "New Chapter".

New Chapter is different from most every other IS2 map in that it has a lot of incoming damage, and Arts damage at that. Nightingale is very good for this, as you deduced, but enemies tend to be bulky as well, so you don't want stall, you want firepower to kill them fast enough so they don't leak.

Horn (placed on the lower tiles below the red circle, aimed up), Surtr S2 (yes, I know, not S3), Nearl the Radiant Knight S3, Skadi S3, Specter the Unchained S3, Mudrock S2, Cutter S1, Amiya Guard S1, you want a frontline that can kill sufficiently fast without folding while being Nightingale-sustained. Aid them with Fragile such as Suzuran S2 or Gnosis, heavy duty Arts like Goldenglow, Ebenholz or Eyja, or heavy Physical like Schwarz S2, Chung the Hungday, etc. Your ranged picks are a bit more limited due to the ranged tile restrictions, as you cannot place units adjacent to each other so long as Playwright is alive. If you're in a pinch for DPS, do place them adjacent to each other, but pop Nightingale S3 as soon as Playwright is about to do his first cross explosion (10 seconds after spawn; every 20 seconds afterwards). That can give you some leeway.

Don't be intimidated by the backline Golems, Golems are fragile, you need one unit with self-sustain and damage to deal with them, or two if you don't have a self-sustain DPS, so you can give them a healer. The bulk of your manpower should be on the red circle (and the final bit on Playwright killing duty).

Compared to the other final bosses, Playwright demands quite a bit of you in terms of dealing with incoming Arts damage, as well as needing you to properly be able to punch through Playwright's phase 2 bulk wall. Build with these two main directives in mind and you'll find his is a pretty simple map, merely demanding in ways the other IS2 bosses and most IS2 maps aren't, so it catches you off guard.

So I'm just joining the lovely tumblr HP fandom from AO3, and I'm hoping to gauge interest in an Age of Sail/Pirates AU! I've started plotting and written a few short scenes for this fic, which will be longform and mostly gen (with a few canon pairings featuring). Marauders and Auror gang will be the main POV characters, with other POVs making appearances here and there. But I'm not well-read outside my usual pairings! Has this been done to death already? Am I missing out on pirate shenanigan fics?

The waters were calm under vivid magenta skies.

If Tonks had learned anything from her years at sea with the Ministry service, it was not to trust Muggle superstitions about harbingers of good weather. The ocean was a fickle thing.

The magenta was quite nice, though, and worth trying out.

It was just a moment later, with her nose scrunched up and her hair shifting from acid green to deepest pink, that something on the horizon caught her eye.

She gripped the wooden railing with one hand, fumbling inside her scarlet Auror’s coat with the other. Once the telescope was in her grasp, she aimed it across the water and peered at the offending object with a frown.

A smooth-sailing brig ambled along the horizon, her white sails set aglow by the radiant pink of the setting sun. From the stern staff, blowing gently in the patient evening breeze, a flag of crimson and gold was stitched with strange, unfamiliar designs.

“Captain!” Tonks called back to the quarterdeck, where her commander was stationed at the wheel. “A ship, on the larboard side.”

The step-thump, step-thump of Captain Moody’s approach echoed over the noise of Dawlish up on the quarterdeck, scrambling to see what Tonks had caught sight of before him.

“Bearing?” grunted Moody as he drew level with Tonks and drew his own telescope.

“Two points abaft the beam, sir. I don’t recognize their colours.”

“Hm.” Moody’s scarred lips pursed. “Whatever that daft flag is, it doesn’t look like any Muggle ensign I’ve seen.”

He switched the telescope from his regular left eye to the swiveling electric blue one, metal touching upon glass with a disconcerting clink. Tonks had always wondered how well the eye’s penetrating abilities functioned through the lenses and mirror of a telescope, but Moody had never given her a straight answer.

“Not a Death Eater flag either, though,” she said, peering through her own scope again at the strange ensign. It looked handmade, and overly complicated in design, like a futzy crest of arms overpopulated with creatures of some kind. Dogs, maybe, and…were those antlers?

“Their heading is the same as ours,” Tonks added. “North-east toward Founder Isle.”

“Porting in Rowena,” said Moody.

“Maybe with prizes in their chests,” said Tonks, nodding.

Moody snapped his telescope shut with a frown. “Not without running them past us. Admiral Scrimgeour’ll have a bloody fit if he sees any more pirate booty smuggled through our port.” He stomped toward the hatch that led down to the lower decks. It was habitual for him, whenever they encountered a new ship, to retreat to his great cabin so he could inspect his foe glass and at least one sneakoscope.

“Dawlish!” he cried, already halfway down the ladder. “Hail the vessel a-larboard. Tonks, set course to intercept.”

“If they make a run for it?” asked Tonks.

Moody paused, gnarled hands just visible around the edges of the ladder, and his face twisted into a frightening half-smile as he looked up at her.

“Then we’ll bloody well pursue them, won’t we?”

so, it's 2014. the pokemon vcg world championships is on the horizon.

enter Park Sejun. he went into the tournament as a favorite by a significant amount, having a 2nd place finish at worlds in 2011 and top 8 in 2012 and 2013 (all of which were within 3 games of becoming the champion) and dominating the south korean scene all year.

a lot of that was due to his team building. he consistently ran innovative teams that hugely shaped the meta. mega kangaskhan, for example, dominated most of the world, but sejun's answer to it meant it was not finding that same success in south korea.

the main narrative around him rocking up to the tournament with pachirisu is that he loved it so much, he was determined to make it work come hell or high water.

but that's not the full story. it was actually a fucking brilliant strategic choice.

i could go on a whole other infodump about the details of how the format being restricted to the kalos regional dex led to the specific conditions that made this possible, but i won't.

the important part is that Sejun saw mega gyarados being potentially in a really, really strong spot as the meta swung pretty massively right before worlds.

the only question, then, is how to support it, since it was still pretty hard checked by some pretty strong and popular pokemon at the time.

again, i could go on about the other pokemon he brought and how every single choice was incredibly well thought out, but this is about pachirisu.

stats wise, while it's offensively not great, it's surprisingly bulky, especially when compared to the other format-legal pokemon that could learn the move follow me, which was its primary role on the team. that redirect could be used to protect gyarados, allowing it time to set up dragon dances and all that good stuff.

but that's not the end of how incredibly strong a supportive pokemon it can be, especially if you're not prepared for it.

it also ran nuzzle, which does approximately 0 damage but paralyzes, which in gen 6 quartered the pokemon's speed, not halved it, and super fang, which, due to it always doing half the target's remaining hp, made pachirisu enough of a damage threat that you can't just ignore it. you've gotta deal with the little motherfucker, or you're gonna get fucked up. pachirisu also has volt absorb, further covering against the very strong electric types that were popular at the time.

and then, of course, was the element of surprise. many people at the tournament had never played against it competitively, and even those who had were likely to not know/remember that it can learn follow me, and failing to play around follow me can be absolutely devastating.

this is already pretty long so i'm not gonna break down his 2-0 win in the finals, but my god he made calls with pachirisu specifically that were incredibly intelligent and were absolutely crucial to his victory

tl;dr, Park Sejun is fucking brilliant, and with a series of some of the biggest brain choices to ever hit the vgc scene, both in team building and in-game, he wrecked shop with the little zappy squirrel that most people wouldn't even begin to consider for any team, let alone one at the highest competitive level.

in my last ribbon master post, i talked about what the ribbon master challenge consists of, what inspired me to hatch reides specifically for the challenge, how hatching reides went and how my storyline playthrough of emerald version went. i left off right after reides attained his first ribbon - the champion ribbon; aka, the ribbon you get for entering the hoenn region's hall of fame. i mentioned that my next step was ev training reides... and that's exactly where i want to start this post off!

ev training pokemon is a fun and relatively time-consuming process. in very, VERY general terms, a pokemon gains at least one ev - or, effort value - after knocking out another pokemon. effort values exist for each of your pokemon's stats - hp, attack, defense, sp attack, sp defense, and speed - and the species of pokemon that you knock out determines the effort value(s) that your pokemon will gain *for* knocking that pokemon out. it's kind of like an invisible bit of experience, linked directly to your pokemon's stats rather than its level. by sending your pokemon out against specific types of pokemon, you can therefore control the evs that your pokemon gains and have a huge impact on its stats. HOWEVER, like experience... effort values also eventually cap out, too - so you can't keep on increasing your pokemon's stats indefinitely. this means that you need to be careful when you ev train by keeping a stat spread in mind for your pokemon. you can read more about ev training here on marriland.com. keep in mind that ev training can have small differences between generations, too - the stuff i talk about for gen3 has been streamlined SIGNIFICANTLY for gen9! but i'll get into that later.

in the case of reides, i wanted him to have an ev spread that maximized his special attack stat and his speed stat. 252 evs is basically the 'cap' for each stat, so this meant that i needed to knock out 252 pokemon that gave 1 special attack ev, then another 252 pokemon that gave 1 speed ev. in addition, i needed to knock out 6 pokemon to make up the last bit of leftover effort value space. i decided to go with hp evs for that! my plan therefore looked like this:

252 sp attack: spinda and slugma (route 113, grass) each give 1 sp attack ev.

252 speed: wingull (route 104, water) gives 1 speed ev.

4 hp: whismur (rusturf tunnel, cave) gives 1 hp ev.

even though reides was my main focus here, as i wanted the effort ribbon for ev training him, i was fully aware that i needed to take on the battle tower for my next two ribbons - namely, the winning ribbon and the victory ribbon. to face those trainers, i'd need a battle-oriented team that could help reides out... which meant ev training those pokemon, too! naturally, there was a bit of a catch to this. in gen3, the battle tower does NOT scale your pokemon down to level 50 for the winning ribbon, which is tied to clearing the level 50 battle challenge. (future gens implemented automatic level-scaling for level 50 challenges, but the ribbons associated with those challenges are different from the gen3 one.) this meant that i couldn't level up any of the pokemon in my battle-oriented team past the level 50 mark. given the nature of ev training, some exp gain was to be expected... so all i could do was hope that knocking out all of those pokemon wouldn't send anyone over the limit.

after reviewing my options, i decided that my battle team would consist of a latios and a metagross. i knew that i could get latios at level 40 and that steven stone would entrust me with a baby beldum in the post-game of emerald. once again firing up eon timer, i rng hunted for a timid latios and an adamant beldum - also aiming for a spread of good ivs. (individual values are a whole other song and dance. they're stats which are inherent to pokemon rather than being something you can influence... or, at least they were until hyper training was introduced in later gens! for more information about those, you can check out bulbapedia's article on them.)

origin the adamant beldum was pretty easy to get my hands on! since they're a static encounter, i could basically save before picking them up and simply reset if i failed.

as for latios... rng hunting for latios can be quite the ordeal! after doing the eon timer stuff, i couldn't just reach out and grab my latios, already neatly chillin' in a pokeball. i'd have to search for him, as he is a roaming pokemon that appears at random around the hoenn region. then i'd have to capture latios quickly - roaming pokemon love to escape as soon as they can!! - and take a look at his stats to see if i hit the correct frame for him. i decided to speed up the process by keeping a free slot open in my party, so that i wouldn't have to run to the in-game pc to examine him in the pokemon storage box. i also decided that i'd simply master ball him as soon as i ran into him so that he didn't have the chance to run away from me! this video by blisy was a big help to me; even though i wasn't hunting for a shiny, the trick that they shared of going to route 110 was super useful. i also repel tricked for the latios by putting a pokemon that was below level 40 in my party and poppin' a max repel. by hopping on my acro bike in the grass, i could prolong the max repel's influence, too, since the hops don't count as steps but can still spawn encounters. after some back-and-forth between the small cycling-related building and that patch of grass, i'd run into latios... and, after quite a few resets, i finally ran into my perfect timid lad.

this trio - origin, albatross, and reides - would serve as my battle tower gang. i knew i could raise albatross with the same spread i had in mind for reides, which worked out perfectly, because another fun thing about ev training is that... the exp share helps with it! any pokemon who gains experience from knocking out another pokemon gains the corresponding evs associated with that pokemon. (this is why ev training is insanely easy in gen9, as you can easily ev train a whole PARTY of pokemon at once.) another perk to the exp share method was that the exp gained from those battles would be split between the pokemon facing the opposing pokemon as well as the pokemon holding the exp share in my party. with the higher-levelled albatross in the lead, i handed the exp share to reides and got to work.

i had a lot of fun ev training albatross and reides in sp attack in particular, as i saw a lot of really interesting spinda patterns. i had to fight the urge to catch each and every single one that i saw, to be honest... but i gave into said urge when i saw this spinda, which i thought had a pattern reminiscent of florida on its forehead.

anyway, after spending a LOT of time counting encounters and gathering up those evs on albatross and reides, they finally met my ev training goal. thankfully, neither of them even hit the level 50 mark, so my plan to use them in the 50 battle challenge was intact. however, reides the horsea DID gain enough experience to evolve into reides the seadra!

we paid a visit to slateport and talked to the woman in the market who was blessed with the supernatural gift of being able to tell if your pokemon is fully ev trained or not. her maximized-effort-value sense tingled when she saw reides, and so he got a lovely ribbon for all the work that he put in. (never mind that he was relaxing in my party with a weird hat on while albatross went on his rampage.)

naturally, i picked up the effort ribbon for albatross, too. i then had to ev train origin the beldum. deciding to do the ol' exp share trick once more, as i figured the more optimally ev trained pokemon, the better, i decided to go pick up a cute little adamant bagon from meteor falls so that i could train two pokemon at once. while she wouldn't be part of my battle challenge this time around, fangs the bagon marked the final rng hunt of my emerald file. i also had a different ev spread in mind for fangs and origin, instead opting for this one:

252 attack: poochyena (route 103, grass) gives 1 attack ev.

252 speed: zigzagoon (route 103, grass) and wingull (route 104, water) give 1 speed ev.

4 hp: whismur (rusturf tunnel, cave) gives 1 hp ev.

again, a battle of epic proportions occurred. origin and fangs were soon fully ev trained. after picking up their respective effort ribbons, i shifted gears towards readying my original trio for the battle tower. i levelled them all up to level 50, evolving origin fully into a metagross as they gained experience. at this point, i didn't want to invest too much into reides' moveset, as i knew that i would be taking him through the contests later on. this meant not spending any of the single-use tms on him just yet. i went out of my way to get albatross and origin prepared, however. using the advice provided in athis' ribbon handbook, i put these movesets on my pokemon: albatross (lvl 50 timid latios) - psychic - dragon claw* - thunderbolt - ice beam origin (lvl 50 adamant metagross) - earthquake - metal claw - shadow ball* - explosion * = to be changed in gen4 due to the special attack / physical attack changes that were implemented once everyone was all ready, we hopped on the s.s. tidal and zoomed on over to the battle frontier.

it was then time to BATTLE. first up was the winning ribbon, which, like i said before, is awarded to your team for completing the lvl 50 battle tower challenge. this means maintaining a winstreak against 56 trainers in a row, with save point breaks after every 7 trainers. the battles in this tower are pretty damn wack, as the trainers have some... interesting pokemon. blisseys that spam evasion-boosting moves, pokemon that have an uncanny aptitude for landing moves that shouldn't be all that accurate with DEADLY precision (including the ohko moves), the works. everyone swears that the ai is stacked against you in emerald version in particular - with many people actually recommending that you just trade your pokemon over to ruby or sapphire instead, where the ai is apparently waaay more merciful - so i was very nervous about taking this challenge on in my copy of emerald version.

now, i'm not sure if i just got really lucky (albatross' ice beam actually froze one of the blisseys that i encountered, thus preventing it from stalling me out), or if the way i trained my pokemon was just That Good, but i managed to get through the lvl 50 challenge on my first try. i saved some of the fun little dialogues from this tower challenge.

during my challenge, i also faced salon maiden anabel of LEGEND. she actually almost broke my streak - but reides was able to clutch out a win against her entei.

after winning against 56 trainers in a row, reides got his third ribbon.

my time in the battle tower wasn't up, though, as i also had the victory ribbon to nab. this ribbon is granted to pokemon who emerge victorious in yet another streak of 56 battles - albeit in the battle tower's OTHER challenge mode. while ruby and sapphire have a level 100 division in addition to the level 50 one, emerald has an open level division in addition to the level 50 one, instead. this means that, in emerald version, you don't need to raise your pokemon to level 100 for this next marathon of battles. you can just raise your pokemon to level 60. this reduces the move pool at your opponents' disposal! it also meant that i could alter origin's moveset a little bit, as they learned meteor mash at level 55.

once again, i dove right into the battle challenge. a couple of npcs stood out to me as i took on the open level challenge, too.

in addition to this future-mother, i had a really cool encounter: a full-odds uncatchable shiny quilava!

while i couldn't snatch this lad for myself, it was still AWESOME to encounter him! eventually, i managed to clear the 56-streak challenge for the open level division. this meant that reides got the second (and final!) battle-related ribbon for generation 3.

i was extremely nervous about taking on the battle tower challenges, as it was my very first time attempting ANYTHING in rse's battle frontier. as a kid, i didn't even poke around at it... so, needless to say, getting through the battles was a massive relief. it made all of the team-building and ev training totally worth it. before leaving the battle frontier, i picked up a little treat with the bp that i got for winning so many battles in a row.

once the battle ribbons were taken care of, it was finally time to dig into my most-anticipated part of my ribbon master journey: the generation 3 contests. there are 5 contest categories in generation 3 - cool, beauty, cute, smart and tough - and four ranks for each of these categories - normal, super, hyper and master. each contest can be broken into two parts. in the first part, your pokemon is judged based on its apperance in accordance to these categories. in the second part, your pokemon is judged based on the moves - or 'appeals' - that it presents to the contest judge. the appeal portion of the contests isn't linked to your pokemon's species, however. rather, it's linked to your pokemon's condition. each pokemon has cool, beauty, cute, smart and tough characteristics as part of its overall condition, and each of these characteristics can change in accordance to the type of pokeblocks that you feed it. for example, if you feed your pokemon a spicy pokeblock, it will increase your pokemon's cool condition stat. this means that, before you take a particular contest challenge, you'd need to make the suitable pokeblocks to improve your pokemon's condition *for* that contest. furthermore, in gen3, there's actually a cap to how many pokeblocks you can give to one pokemon. once you hit that cap and max out your pokemon's 'sheen', you have no means of improving on it. (...unless you transfer it out of gen 3, as, in omega ruby and alpha sapphire, you can actually max out your pokemon's condition without worrying about sheen. however, once a pokemon leaves gen3, it can't go back into it by legitimate means.) since i needed reides to have a condition that was good enough to beat the master rank in all five contest categories, i needed to make special pokeblocks for him. pokeblocks that i couldn't hope to make in emerald version alone. i didn't have access to an e-reader or the much-coveted e-reader exclusive, nutpea berry, so...

that's where pokemon colosseum comes in. by grinding mt battle for pokecoupons, i could gain access to special, super-rare berries that i could then trade over to emerald for pokeblock-making purposes. i decided to give reides a tried-and-tested pokeblock assortment consisting of pokeblocks made from 1 salac berry, 3 petaya berries, 5 kelpsy berries, 1 hondew berry, and 1 more final salac berry. i could find the 5 kelpsy berries and the hondew berry easily in my emerald file, but the salac and petaya berries were colosseum-exclusive. since each of these berries goes for 15k pokecoupons a pop - and i needed 5 of them - i had to grind mt battle for a whopping 75k pokecoupons. to give you an idea of how long this would take: one full, 100-battle run of mt battle in story mode gives 6.9k pokecoupons, so... you know. (on the bright side, you CAN grind out the 1k areas over and over again once you beat them at least once in a previous story challenge.) i needed to take reides through all 100 battles in mt battle's story mode so that he could get the earth ribbon, so i figured that i could do at least part of this grind with him. i had to get to colosseum's post-game before i could actually send reides over, though. so i put one night aside and settled in to wrap up my playthrough and unlock the link trade option.

but...

the very night i buckled in for some Peak Gaming... i'm talking intense, multiple-hours-long gaming... something AWFUL happened.

the pokemon colosseum file that i was working so very hard on whenever i wanted a break from emerald version... suddenly ran into an error. when i tried to save my game (in one of the final areas of the plot, no less!), i got a message saying that the save file had been corrupted - and that the only way to amend this would be to delete said save and make a new one. this meant starting over again entirely.

to say i was horrified is an understatement, as i went through a similar ordeal with my first playthrough of emerald prior to getting reides. i have NO IDEA what caused the corruption, as i was playing as normal and my memory card as a whole seemed perfectly fine otherwise. but i wasn't about to just follow the on-screen instructions and DELETE my beloved colosseum file. i wouldn't be resigned to a fate of reclaiming YET ANOTHER party of pokemon... not without a fight, anyway. i had already done two mt. battle grinds to the 90s from training my storyline team alone, and i was so very close to the post-game. i immediately began researching ways of saving my corrupted data. admittedly, my hopes were low - but, surprisingly, i found ANSWERS.

this is the part of my post where i gotta give a HUUUUGE shoutout to absolblogspokemon! matt posted a video about how he saved his corrupted pokemon xd and colosseum files, and, by following the process that he talked about in that video (involving gamecube memory manager and pkmngctools; more HUUUUGE shoutouts to everyone involved in putting these absolutely INCREDIBLE tools together), i was able to do the same for my colosseum file!!!

you have no idea how happy i was to see this instead of the memory card error. i CHERISH this picture that i took of it, HAHA.

everything was saved - from my party to my storyline progress to the amount of pokecoupons that i managed to scrounge up. please check the video out and give it a little Thumbs Up even if you didn't face this horrible problem, because it seriously is beyond helpful for anyone who runs into it and is also REALLY easy to implement. while this is unrelated to my ribbon master challenge, i definitely recommend looking into homebrewing your wii so that you can gain access to ways of backing up your saves in the event of Something Happening. i was able to back up my cherished childhood acgc town by using gcmm (which i also used to save my colosseum data!), so that alone makes me a little thankful that the chaos unfolded. hilariously enough, i had a funny little moment prior to this happening. while i was training my battle tower team up to level 50, i ran into three absols in a row and joked that it felt like a bad omen, given absol's canonical lore of signifying upcoming disasters and it's somewhat rare 8% encounter rate. i can't help but think that the absol encounters both warned me about this upcoming colosseum disaster while ALSO giving me the answer as to how to fix it! at any rate, i progressed as planned and finished up pokemon colosseum's storyline. once i got to colosseum's post-game, it was time to get reides ready for his trip to the orre region. at the very last minute, i realized that i could evolve reides, as trading between the gamecube and gba games still counts as a link trade. it meant that i had to scramble on over to meteor falls with a fainted nincada (for its ability, compound eyes, which increases the chances of held items on wild encountered pokemon) and my sharpedo which knew thief. i stole a dragon scale off my fifth bagon encountered and gave it to reides.

with that handled, it was time to trade reides over!

since seadra evolves into kingdra once it's traded while holding a dragon scale, reides found himself evolving yet again! i was super happy that it worked, as, before, i was planning on evolving him in generation 4.

reides finally attained his true, purple forme. it was so cool to see him in 3d, too. kingdra is such a majestic pokemon and adding the shiny coloration to an already-stellar design is just... wow!

anyway, reides the shiny KINGDRA!!! joined my pokemon colosseum team and took on the mt battle challenge, battling each and every single one of the trainers in our path. this included the swampert that thwarted my previous - albeit underlevelled - attempt at the mt battle challenge, thanks to earthquake spam and very, very lucky dodges.

you know she had to do it to 'em. ('em being my poor pokemon team.)

soon, we got to the final battle. it was my first time ever getting this far into the mt battle challenge, and i was shocked to see how very swagged out the arena was. its general design really added to the hype of the moment. it felt great to take on the final battle and emerge victorious.

with that, reides got the one and only ribbon that he could during his time in orre: the earth ribbon! at this point, i had enough pokecoupons to afford one (1) of the berries for his array of pokeblocks, so i was sure to give that to him before sending him back to his home in hoenn. in exchange, i sent over a kecleon named kiki (shoutout to my friend, rachel, who named him for me!), who would be right at home in orre with his extremely cool battle animations.

once reides was safely back in emerald, i re-focused on the berry grind. i challenged the 9th area of mt battle repeatedly, claiming 1000 pokecoupons every time. as such, i got very familiar with the npc battles there. in particular, i wanna give a shoutout to matso "the headband dude" lastname. iykyk.

anyway, after a GRUELLING 65k pokecoupon grind - which required 65 runs of this area - i finally managed to grind out the necessary coupons for the remaining berries. i traded them back and forth between colosseum and emerald and FINALLY... FINALLY made reides his pokeblocks so that he could take on the gen3 contest challenge properly. once the pokeblocks were mixed and eaten, reides' overall condition looked like this:

not perfect - yet! - but absolutely fine for our purposes. to give an even bigger boost to reides' contest stats, i got my hands on condition-boosting items in emerald version; namely, the 5 different scarves which you can pick up from the pokemon fan club chairman in slateport city. you can get these scarves by showing him a pokemon who took part in a contest, and then by showing him a pokemon that has at least 200 in a contest condition. i got all of the scarves by feeding origin 10 pokeblocks made from pomeg berries, feeding albatross 10 pokeblocks made from kelpsey berries, and by feeding fangs 10 pokeblocks made from qualot berries. (i used 3-npc blending for all of these, too!)

i also paid a quick visit to the lilycove museum, where i talked to the curator standing towards the back of the room. the curator showed me a room filled with empty frames and bemoaned not having any worthy paintings for display just yet. this is really important to remember to do before you take on the contest challenges (though not A Necessity, it just saves some time later on), so make sure you listen to him before heading back out.

with all of that sorted, i had one more bit of contest-related prep to tackle - namely, reides' contest moveset. thankfully, this ended up being really, really easy to sort out! after doing some research, i found out that the contests in hoenn are made pretty damn easy with the rest + sleep talk contest combination. (rest is super useful in particular, as it gives you a decent score while also preventing other pokemon in the contest from startling your pokemon and deducting its appeal points.) to set this combo up, reides and i paid a visit to a guy in fortree city who happily taught reides how to use sleep talk. once reides mastered that, we headed back to lilycove and talked to a sleepy guy who handed us a tm for rest. i also gave reides the surf + dive combination, just for the extra appeal boosts in the beauty contests. this was definitely not necessary, as the rest + sleep talk combo ended up working really, really well - even in contests which disliked cute moves! i was able to beat the master rank for each contest after a few attempts. behold, my shoddily-put-together edit of all of reides' master rank victory screens...!

reides got a ribbon for each and every contest that he won, which left him with a whopping 20 ribbons from winning contests alone! his dazzling master-rank contest performances also inspired an artist in the crowd to do some paintings of him. he approached me immediately after reides won the cute, tough, and smart master rank contests. keep in mind that this artist doesn't whip up a painting every single time that you win a master-rank contest! some people say that this event triggers if you hit a certain score in the master rank contest and others say it might just be a random event. regardless of the specifics, our little chat with the museum curator prior to taking part in the contests is what actually makes this event possible, as we can direct the artist to the museum afterwards. the curator will then put the painting that he did of your pokemon on display in the previously-empty room. the first time that this artist paints your pokemon, he also gives the artist ribbon to that pokemon!

naturally, i had to go to the lilycove museum to take some pictures of these three masterpieces.

with all of the contest ribbons acquired... reides finally did it. he got each and every ribbon available to him in generation 3 of pokemon!!!

i'm sure i don't need to say it... but the gen3 part of this challenge was SOMETHING ELSE. the ups and downs of it were truly mind-boggling. i mentioned feeling like i was interacting with every single aspect of gen3 in my previous post and let me tell you... i now know that i interacted with every single aspect of gen3. starting off this challenge in this generation has given me such a newfound appreciation of both the hoenn and orre regions. sure, i replayed both emerald and colosseum - which renewed my love of those games' respective plots. but, at the risk of sounding cheesy... my overall experience was even deeper than that. interacting with gameplay features that i never took on in the past (like the battle tower, mt battle, and gen3-style ev training) really enriched my experience. i had to put a lot of thought into each step of this gen3 journey, and i can truly say that each of the ribbons that reides has on him is also linked to a bunch of fond memories about acquiring that ribbon. if you're interested in taking this challenge on, please take this post of mine as a sign to attempt it; i truly can't recommend it enough... (especially with the threat of pokebank someday closing!) anyway, with those 26 ribbons, reides' gen3 journey reached a very, very satisfying end. reides is already in sinnoh with his buddies - origin the metagross, albatross the latios, fangs the salamence, persana the suicune (who i sent over from orre and ev trained in emerald, too), and princess the zigzagoon (i'm really attached to her OKAY!!) - and i'm looking forward to the ribbon grind over there as well. a lot of the setup and preparation that i did in gen3 will aid me in future pokemon generations, so i don't think that any of my future updates will be QUITE this long (HAHAAA), but i'm still already looking forward to writing up the next one! especially since soul silver will be involved, and that's my fav pokemon game of all time! please continue to cheer reides on as his journey continues!
