I am going to fail at ending A New Calamity.
Today I listened to my parents talk about what kept them from becoming artists, or more to the point, "successful" artists. My Mom's a perfectionist and felt if she didn't get it right the first time, she never would. My Dad blames a girlfriend-stealing high school art professor. They're both real artists, by the way. My Dad, a retired construction worker, draws hyper realistic portraits. My mom doodles, sings opera and fixes computers. They both balk at the notion of sharing their artistic work online. They are in their 70's or almost. A mistrust of technology is not a surprise here.
I am on the autism spectrum. So I start more projects than I finish. I love coming up with new ideas and beginning new worlds. They generally fizzle out before the grand finale, unless I'm REALLY dedicated and doing it primarily for my own enjoyment. So ANC has that going for it.
A professor in college looked at my 2012 final portfolio, beautiful work but missing the all-important photo corners to center the pieces. I'll never forget what he said: You do good work, but you never quite finish it, do you?
I don't struggle with perfection, and I do. I try as hard as my cancer addled body lets me. Then I let it go out into the airwaves, and start the next page or frame or panel or project. I always forget the final touches.
Imperfect is kickass.
If you ask me.
Ever heard of Fail Harder? The basic gist is, try *so hard* that failing to achieve perfection is still an epic win. I'm going to fail at ending this comic in some way. I will put on my sunglasses and watch it burn beautifully.
Not everyone is going to be happy with my ending. I might not even be happy with it. It's based on my fight with cancer, for crying out loud. What kind of ending can we expect? Maybe I'll learn the secret of happiness before I die of cells that went extra. And maybe only my readers will be able to actually put that secret into practice.
I love you all. I love when you let me know how i've inspired or comforted you with this comic. That's what gets me out of bed in the afternoon. (1pm at minimum. Maybe noon.)
In conclusion, dear readers... I don't know what I'm doing, and I shall continue regardless. Peace.

Superboy #60 (1999)
Tumblr media
I have always been curious about Superboy's Hyper-Tension saga, but never had the chance of reading it. After The Kingdom event, this one is the first story that uses the controversial concept of Hypertime in a regular DC title. Since the beloved Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985) the DC Multiverse schema had been erradicated (sort of..), till Mark Waid and Grant Morrison set a new fictional environment where the multiple Earths became obsolete in front of an infinite fabric of alternate time lines where none of DC stories published to date were excluded from the canon.
Tumblr media
Really, Hipertyme is testimonial here. The story is similar to any other multi dimensional epic quest already seen in super-hero genre. The real interest on this pick is the Superboy series itself. Kesel and Grummett are not ashamed of creating classic super-hero stuff, and they put in the book all the fantasy that other authors try to negate in this post-Watchmen post-TDKR era. A lot of Kirby homage (really the title main scenario, the Cadmus Project, is a Kirby creation), all the explanatory flashbacks that a new reader needs to figure out the story so far, and a clear narrative-iconographic objective for the episode: Attach Superboy to the front of huge atomic missile and pull the trigger. Nothing more, nothing less.

Regarding the advertisement section, we can highlight the double page ad for the brand new show Batman Beyond, as well as the in-house ads based on the slogan "The Original Unvierse".

Also, to reflect the early 1999 comics scene context, we have two interesting pieces: The Wizard Magazine's Annual Fan Awards Ballot (you can see the trending titles and artists of that time) and the obituary for the recently deceased Bob Kane, written by the then DC's President Jenette Khan

D&D is good at the kind of fantasy stories that have old and faded, hand painted covers with the hyper realistic style of art on them.
Epic fantasy with extremely archetypal heroes, where players are larger than life distillations of details into tropes.
So I think it makes sense that people who play DnD are hesitant to try much else.
Other games don't deliver what they're looking for, the designs are fundamentally different.
I think that as indie or just non-wotc designers, we might be reaching out to the wrong demographic. Because the kids I knew when I was still flesh, and even millennials (who were all adults to me at the time); they were constantly building their own games in order to RP.
I only knew what DnD thanks to my mom, because she was a huge Tolkien fan and desperately wanted to play but, (christianity) said no. But the first ttRPG I read was in the back of a Yu-Gi-Oh manga that used (an apparently very) simplified version of THAC0, and the first I ever played was Pathfinder. But I only played it twice.
The rpgs I played, that weren't on a PlayStation, were writing RPs. Made up stuff my friends and I pulled together; that wouldn't work in DnD for various reasons, and a massive RP on a single dying forum.
The game was only still going because the 28/30+ year olds that ran it had been writing together since they were kids. I assumed that was an outlier until I started talking to more weeb elders, comic con vets, survivors of the "yaoi paddle," and the kids they raised and made chill spaces for. But they've been making and playing games besides DnD forever, and from what I could see, would've had a lotta fun with systems that fit the games they were actually trying to play.

10 Fandoms, 10 Characters, 10 Tags
Thank you for tagging me @x-authorship-x 💖💖💖
In no particular order, because I don't have the emotional capacity to pick my favorite characters and then pick a most favorite on top of that:
1. Liu Qingge (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System)
Tumblr media
I can't not love this guy. He's competent, honorable, and protective. His capacity for love is ... insane. He's so hardworking and diligent. And Cheng Luan (his sword) is epic!
2. Kozume Kenma (Haikyu!!)
Tumblr media
In a lot of ways, Kenma reminds me of myself. I don't like large crowds or being forced to socialize. Like him, I'd rather have some alone time and focus on my personal hobbies and interests.
3. Senju Tobirama (Naruto)
Tumblr media
I'm sure this choice doesn't shock anyone who's read my Naruto fics. Tobirama is hyper-competent. I am fascinated by the ruthlessly practical way his mind works. I adore that he creates new jutsu to achieve the seemingly impossible.
4. Hua Cheng (Heaven Official's Blessing)
Tumblr media
Eight. Hundred. Years. Of. Devotion. Need I say more?
He's also a total BAMF.
5. Jon Antilles (Star Wars)
Tumblr media
This one, I blame on Kat. I've never read the books/comics he apparently appears in. But Kat's written so many brilliant fics featuring him that I love him anyway. He has the coolest Force powers! Healing, growing plants, teleporting, walking through walls, etc. My obsession is legit.
6. Lan Jingyi (The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation)
Tumblr media
He's a cultivator who's terrified of ghosts. And he faces them anyway! He's an extremely loyal friend. Also, Lan Jingyi is 100000% a Chaos Gremlin ™ and I have a serious weakness for those.
7. Thorin Oakenshield (The Hobbit)
Tumblr media
... How am I supposed to pick anyone else after he sang Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold in the first Hobbit film?!
He's also loyal, loves his family and people, perseveres when most people would give up, etc.
8. Dabi (Boku no Hero Academia)
Tumblr media
Everyone will think I'm possessed if I don't have at least one villain on this list. 😂
Dabi's character design, Quirk, backstory, and motivations fascinate me. Like a moth to flame (pun intended), he draws me in.
9. Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf)
Tumblr media
He's just ... a flailing, intelligent, rambling, snarky, hyper-loyal, cutthroat amalgamation and I can't do anything but love him.
10. Q (James Bond)
Tumblr media
I think this list has thoroughly established that I love competent and intelligent characters. Q's ingenuity delights me. I also adore when he engages in word play.
Anyone who wants to participate, please feel free to tag me! 💖
Tagging (only if you want to play): @spanthedistance @gopherheiyuki @englishlotusflower @sincerely-wyvern @shadowicepuma @shaddowsong @airasilver @admiringtheskies @nateneedssleep @welshbaes

Yknow how theres like Soooooo SOOOO SSSSSOOOOOOOO many movies about White Man Loses Wife/Child (they die or are kidnapped or are hurt etc) and Then Go On Epic Badass Murder Spree About It?
I want those... but with women. Like Mama Bear Rage is utilized often in more comical settings? But I wanna see... Mama Bear Rage Going to save her child? And instead of some shockingly hyper trained battle soldier or whatever have her be unconventional about it. Utilize some more fun and unexpected choreography.

“Dearest Martha,
We knew each other a very long time. Exactly a century in fictional terms, several decades in reality.
From the first discussion I had with Dave Gibbons at, of all places, the San Diego Zoo, about the two of us working together, when I didn't even know your name, I knew that you were a noble, and quintessentially American, creature.
One thing I've always loved about my country is its indomitable spirit, and you were indomitable from the day you were born. The deck was stacked against you: you were Black, female, and impoverished, but nothing ever stopped you. To date, you are the most heroic creation I've ever had the honor to write.
Dave and I fell in love with you early and often. In fits and starts, we told your tale. We hit a crisis early on: puffed-up with self-importance after the success of The Dark Knight Returns, I mischronicled your first adventure as something too on-the-nose political, too self-consciously serious, and, in a word, dreary.
Dave quit. You were almost stillborn, baby.
It took Lynn Varley to straighten my brain out and advise me to reconfigure your story, to bring absurdity and sarcasm and adventure and boyish joy to it, and to win Dave back. Dave's instincts and Lynn's wisdom brought you back from the brink, Martha. It's hardly a coincidence that Lynn shares your birthday, in day and month, if not in year.
So, Martha, my sweetheart, you've been both daughter and mother to me. You've been noble in your every decision, your every aspect, and you've been, unfailingly, a writer's dream: a character who wrote herself.
From housing-project prisoner to drugged-out victim of an insanity ward, from soldier to explorer to savior of the world, to mother of a new generation worthy of your name, you always, relentlessly, wrote yourself.
As Dave does, I miss you, Martha. And I will always love you.
Frank Miller
New York City, 2008”
“Despite being an extremely successful commercial work, and arguably the series that really put Dark Horse on the map as a home for adventurous comics creators bored with the Big Two, the Martha Washington epic is curiously underrepresented in comics criticism, generally liked but not held in anywhere near as much esteem as the creators’ other contemporary works. The character of Martha Washington will occasionally pop up in lists about strong women characters, or POC representation, or bleak sci-fi, but it’s treated as almost a footnote in the careers of Miller and Gibbons. For Gibbons, it serves as a personal and ambitious attempt to stand outside the shadow of Watchmen before the artist shifted towards more commercially inclined series. For Miller, it’s the exact line of demarcation between his classic Formalist Auteur Era (Daredevil, Dark Knight Returns, Ronin) and his hyper masculine Abstraction Auteur Era (Sin City, 300, Holy Terror). Martha Washington is the most human character Frank Miller ever wrote and the last time you can see him caring about a character more than experimentation and style, and not coincidentally it’s one of the last times he would share basically equal creative autonomy with someone.
As Gibbons and Miller both explain in the introductory text in the complete Martha Washington collection, Miller convinced Gibbons to work with him on the series by pitching him the story of Martha “on a mission to prevent an evangelical Elvis clone [from] nuking the rest of the United States from deep in the Arizona desert.” For Gibbons, this offered a giddy respite from “our recently successful dark dissections of superheroes,” so he started working on designs and plans based on that treatment. But when Miller’s script finally arrived, Gibbons was horrified by how dark and gritty it had become, missing the surreal humor and absurdity that had first caught his eye. Miller admits that the project would have been “stillborn” if Lynn Varley hadn’t convinced him to take Gibbons’ concerns into consideration and rework the entire project. The work that Miller and Gibbons eventually created is an incredible hybrid of these two spheres, brutal and unflinching yet curiously warm and tender and goofy. Not unlike life itself, in other words.
What’s especially clear throughout the series that make up the Martha Washington epic is that Miller and Gibbons and their various colorist collaborators truly love Washington as a character. And it’s not hard to see why. Washington is an epic hero with all of the tragedy and none of the hubris. If she has a tragic flaw, it’s that she has hope for humanity, but that’s also the ingredient that makes her continue long past the point her many enemies expect her to fall. As Washington herself puts it in a survival mantra, “When things get bad like this, you just keep telling yourself ‘This won’t kill me, I won’t die here, this won’t kill me.”
(…)
This is why Washington is such a uniquely potent dystopic protagonist. Gibbons draws her not as a cold superhuman brute or insensitive sex warrior (and notably Washington encounters and defeats characters who represent both of these tropes) but as a bold and powerful black woman with a wide emotional range to reflect her equally wide array of physical talents. Many of the most memorable scenes in the series are simple one page depictions of Washington crying in solitary peace after making a difficult decision (like her first foray in the senseless Amazon War between PAX and the rogue Fat Boy Burger corporate state), or multi-panel sequences showing her reaction to a trauma shifting from shock to acceptance to strength (the killing of a basically nonverbal bully who had just slain her adolescent mentor). So many dystopic and post-apocalyptic works gives us protagonists who are blank slates or emotionally cold, indicating that survival is only possible if you shut down everything that makes you human. But with Washington, Miller and Gibbons reject this premise and provide an emotionally open yet brave and strong woman who survives because of how much she values that which makes her human.
As that anecdote about Martha Washington’s gestation shows, a huge amount of Martha Washington’s humanity is due to Gibbons’ vision for what would make this project work and ability to weave that into even the most ambitious of Miller’s ideas (as well as minimize the tone deafness of Miller’s worst concepts– the less said about the gay Nazi terrorist group, the better, though it’s hard not to think of them as predecessors to the dreaded Nu Fascist icon Milo Yiannopuolos). Gibbons rightfully continues to get acclaim for the patterns and precision focus he brought to Watchmen but while that series and Washington share dystopic themes, Washington also serves as a foil to the unfeeling, repetitive nature of that landmark work. Washington is still just as ambitious and epic but there’s a chaos and looseness to it that makes it far more exciting and filling. Miller’s script gives Gibbons ample opportunity to show off his range as an artist, with issues taking place in locations as diverse as the densely overcrowded urban centers of Chicago and New York, the equally claustrophobic but less populated world of the Amazon and the far more desolate realms of the southwest and outer space. But beyond that, it also pushes Gibbons’ talent for realistically rendering human expression to new extremes, with many of its climaxes getting delivered via small panel beats and compressed close-ups of reactions. It’s a detailed work that never feels overbearing, that demands innumerable rereads but never makes that feel like a chore.
(…)
The Washington series is at its best when it focuses on these personal, human tragedies and how they spark the larger, more apocalyptic events filling out the background of the series. Though every Martha Washington release is worth reading, there is a significant difference in mood, tone and aesthetic in the initial Give Me Liberty series and what followed in its wake. The clearest difference comes with the departure of masterful colorist Robin Smith, who was brought on to the series to give it a more “European” feel. Smith’s coloring recalls 2000 A.D. and Heavy Metal but it also fits perfectly alongside the adventurous work Gibbons and Miller’s peers were doing at DC in the same era, particularly Tim Truman’s Hawkworld and Howard Chaykin’s The Shadow: Blood and Judgment, both of which utilized their painterly textures to depict grimy urban decay and freakish figures in ways that felt raw rather than realistic.
(…)
Yet the conclusion of the series, Martha Washington Dies, brought Miller and Gibbons full circle, reuniting them with the fearless and eternally optimistic Washington on her final birthday. A century old and still stoic, Washington knows death is on the way and what surprises her most is that she isn’t alone but surrounded by people she cares about. She chooses to spend last day inspiring them, not holding back about how dire their situation might seem in yet another apocalyptic scenario but focusing on the human capacity to overcome hopelessness. And in her final moment, Washington transforms into a literal beacon of hope, dying and then immediately being reborn as a lightwave leading on the troops. It’s not exactly a happy ending but it’s a perfect ending for the type of warrior Martha Washington is, eternally focused on overcoming all challenges and abiding not by law but by what’s best for humanity. In times like these, that’s perhaps better than a happier story or an unrealistically revolutionary text.”

Tal'Dorei Travelogue: Dragonic Nightmares, Beyond Any Measure, Will Friedle Daydreams To Treasure Forever (Rise of the Chroma Conclave, Trials of Vasslehiem, The Sunken Tomb)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy critters and welcome to a new feature on this blog: Tal'Dorei Travelogue, where I take a look at each batch of Vox Machina episodes as it comes out. For those new here, I review comics and animation and i'm a MASSIVE fan of this show, to the point that despite having tons of other work i've decide to give a try to covering it every week simply because I love talking about it that much and didn't want to miss out again like I did last year. While I haven't seen much of critical roll...
Tumblr media
I know, I know, I've bought the book, and deeply loved season one of this show, an epic fantasy about vengance, accepting who you are.. .and pulling on scanlans motherfucking beads. It nicely blended the kind of bullshit i'm told is normal for a DnD campagin with the epic fantasy that's just as normal, gorgeous animation and made it's main cast personal faviorite va's of mine.. except Ashley and Sam. They were already there since childhood. So my anticipation was through the roof for season 2 and after a VERY rough year for animation and a rough start to go along with that... I really needed this and the show not only didn't disapoint but somehow topped itself from the high it left off on. So join me under the cut but be warned.. there be dragons.. and also full spoilers for this weeks episodes.
Tumblr media
Rise of the Chroma Conclave: So kicking my 2023 in animation (As I haven't yet watched the one Great North i've gotten yet and i'm not getting near Velma till me and my friend @jess-the-vampire (Who I also swept into this very show), are good and ready) with one hell of a bang, The Scouring of Emon, as i'm calling it as a big nightmarish fantasy event needs a cool name and I need something to call this to my therapist after this whole thing gives me nightmares for month, is easily one of the most tense events i've seen in animation. The first ten minutes of this episode is a mixture of the Chroma Conclave killing everything in their path in the most brutal way possible, and our heroes running for their lives and BARELY surviving. It sells just how BIG an event this is and just what a full power DnD dragon can do, something I really wasn't aware of not playing the game no matter how badly i've wanted to: it only takes what seems like MINUTES in story and seconds in real time for them to utterly destroy emon, kill most of it's people, and for Thordak to grandly delcare they scan serve them.. or they can die. There is no other option. The dragons are also played well, with Lance Reddick, who I previously saw play a villian masterfully on Ducktales with Lunaris utterly top himself with a deep terrifying growl, and continuing a trend of using a voice acting legend for one of their main villians instead of a guest star, Cree Summer nicely follows up Grey with her turn as Raishan, something they set up last season and i'm glad they followed through with. I haven't seen her play a villian in a while but god does she do as amazing as you'd expect, and with just a few lines she sells our heroes are fucked and why they barely escape her alive. Matthew Mercer and in a surpise as the voice was so diffrent from Vax, LIam O'Brian, do wonderful as Umbrasyl and Vorugal, completing the quartet. The CGI is also leagues better than last time: While Brimscythe was intimidating and all, the crew outright said that Titmouse worked overtime to make sure the dragons felt like the full characters they are instead of just beasts and it works, and thus the CGI instead helps sell that these beasts are BEYOND our heroes, beyond strength, and beyond hope.. and all they can do is run and HOPE to survive for now a Thordak hyper beams emon to cinders.
Our heroes are thus less terrfied as the king dies (Tragically, and with dignity, simply smiling that his family lives on as he bleeds out his eyes) and their left simply running, seperated and scared. And we get some close calls to show just how outclassed our heroes are: Percy nearly DIES. While obviously given both the trailers and how early it is this wasn't going to happen, the show doe swhat good fiction does and still sells you on the danger and it still utterly jarred me to see my faviorite of the group's skin melt off and Pike BARELY save him in time. Meanwhile the other half of the team.. faces Raishan... and in nice final boss preview fashion... their best efforts do NOTHING. Grog's move that served him so well last time, raging then splitting a dragon open... looses him his faviorite head chopper, simply breaking off on Raishan, and the most Scanlan can do is literally put a foot in her mouth, which only delays her for a moment. We also see Gilmores, one of the best locations of the last season... as burnt out husk. Gimore himself barely lives and it's telling that he's so shaken he offers them anything they need at a discount.... then just says fuck it and lets them loot whatever he has left. Scalan gets stuck with a broom, but everyone stocks up well for the rough road ahead. I also like how the lance of epic dragonslaying from last season isn't forgotten.. but also isn't allowed to make our heroes quest easy, being smashed quickly with Percy just sighing "of course".
This leaves our heroes retreating and welcoming in refuges, with some wanting to fight.. but Percy suggesting fleeing to whitestone instead.. and being you know.. right. And not just because he's my boy: they BARELY escaped with their lives, the dragons will be on them soon, and it's the only safe haven they have. These dragons just took the captial of the land hostage in a second. The rest eventually agree... though Keyleth wonders if this was their fault after Brinscythe, though while that's a neat question i'm glad they don't dwell on it as Percy ultimately points out it isn't: Emon had the best army in the world before him, so it was clear this was in motion a long time and while it goes unsaid, them stopping him likely meant as many survivied as they did rather than have Brinscythe destroy the entire army outright and possibly start the invasion sooner.
What I like is that the castle bit gets you a few seconds of breather.. before VORUGAL comes dowon on them, kills most of the refuges, and once again proves our heroes have no chance as they are as Scanlans gambit from last time.. is dispeled in seconds as Vorgual can see through illusions. It's another nice bit of storytelilng: As keyleth said earlier "Do they have magic?" And it proves they do. Brimscythe was not only have the size.. but also a brute in combat, simply using his sheer strength as a dragon. His allies are stronger, smarter, and our heroes can only hope to run and get stronger , get help and get out alive, barely escaping with maybe 20 people tops. So with some help from Cassandra and the Keeper our heroes keep them safe. And it's also telling for her leadership that Cassandra wholeheartdly agrees to keep the refuges safe here as Whitestone's isolation, which helped the briarwoods keep their iron fist on the place, is now working for the city as it's not a major target. It dosen't mean they have forever though: our heroes need a plan and having seen the pilot again recently... it's a really nice subtle show of character growth: in the pilot when just facing ONE dragon sacking emon eventually... our heroes response was...
Tumblr media
Only turning around because they saw the people they'd just seen moments ago dead, all dead at Brimscythe's hands. Here there once again backs to the wall, now by FOUR dragons who are all smarter, stronger and deadlier than the dragon they BARELY defeated a few months ago, just likely weeks at best days at worst after they again barely (if not by as close a margin) beat a powerful necromancer, a god and rid their friend of a smoke monster. It's not only more understandable to run completely this time but almost expected.. and yet it takes little convicing for most of the party to agree. Vax and Vex are mildly reluctant but agree quickly, with Vax being skeptical.. but also likely understanding this is their duty. It's heartwarming to see these guy go in just a few month from scoffing at the idea of doing something heroic... to all but two fully agreeing to leap into this and find some way to defat the dragons. Their the defenders of the realm and while the guy who gave them that title just melted, it still means something. The only holdouts make sense: Grog is unsure of his strength after the axe thing, and Scalan being the most cyncial .. is the one just outright saying...
Tumblr media
The speech that follows is also inspriing as the team join scalan.. and have also gotten closer as instead of laughing, or anything they just simply find him and Vex and Percy point out what they've acomplished and what whitestone has: in just a few days to a week they already have their surrounding wall almost repaired, and it shows what our protaganist have become: true heroes. Because a hero... inspires people. There someone to look up to and to whitestone they see not fuckups.. but people who risked their lives to save them, freed them from a nightmare, and did more than they ever could've dreamed of. Their heroes wether they like it or not and in this dark time SOMEONE needs to act like it. And if they die.. at least they die gloriously. Scalan caves with the instant classic line of "Can't do my world tour without the band" and it's off to the holy city of Vasslehiem for help. This episode is a tightly packed thrill ride I love to death: it only lets the audeince catch their breath twice to really sell just how fucked Emon is, how much our heroes have lost, and how dire everything is. There's still some great jokes, but the humor is kept either to the quiter moments or simply kept brief as it should: The show knows when to be hilarious as fuck... and when to really sink in how dark things have gotten and how far away the dawn is.. granted in this case the dawn is another year away as they seem to be splitting this arc over two seasons, but it sets up an epic world tour for our heroes, and that they need to take some serious levels in badass , and as we've see their already pretty high up, if their going to survive, much less win.
Tumblr media
The Trials of Vassleheim Our heroes manage to enter a tree with Yennins vauge directions and after a hilarious bit that was released to promote the season with Kiki saving the twins and pike by flying like the wind and Scalan saves the rest of the party with a giant ass.... percy... takes it suprisingly well
Tumblr media
Vasselheim itself.. ends up being no better. Percy suffers some humilation with his wheeling and dealing failing (Vex assures him it happens to all the nobles), and Pike trying to appeal to their council... fails because Highbearer Vord and co.. are your standard council of assholes who won't do anything if ti dosen't effect them. Insert your own politics joke here but i'ts one of the most common jokes in fiction and despite the fact that you know, their going to come for them eventually, they decide not to help.. the despite the fact that they don't even need to send an army or something, they could you know have given our heroes weapons, knowledge you know... on the sly. Anything besides "Gee that's rough buddy". Thankfully one of the guys working for them actually has a working soul and directs them to the Slayers Take, some bounty hunters who are rough tumble.. but their patron deity can help. Also all the while Vax is seeing creepy visions of death and is thus more protective of Vex than usual. Well not exactly death but for those who haven't read campaign spoilers a book or what have you, I shan't tell you what he's seeing, though you can likely guess after the next one.
The story then splits in half as Craven Edge, Silas' creepy sword starts talking to Grog who mistakes it for his stomach and thus wonders off for a fun grog solo adventure. And after eating and suprisingly without visting a whorehouse , Grog wonders his way into an arena where he finds Earthbreaker Groon, a badass monk played by Ike Amadi, a va I hadn't heard of but whose had tons of rolls from Martian Manhunter in the Tommorowverse to Aaron fucking Davis Prowler in the insomniac spider-man games. He's awesome here and the traning sequence... as it is here is one that will stick in my head for a while. Groon simply breaks down Grog asking where his strength comes form.. and suprisingly to me and Grog it isn't the typical "heart" answer I thought he was going for. It also nicely shows how utterly outmatched grog is in a way I always love seeing: Grog gives everything he has from craven edge, to raging.. and never even gets CLOSE to landing a blow, often never even drawing a punch. Groon meanwhile simply uses a few strikes. It's one of those things I just love when I see, to signal the begining of a heroes climb up to that level: that someone can outclass them that easily. Being used a lot in manga, it's likely not a suprise a bunch of nerdy va's who love anime used this trope and bless em for it. Grog finally stops getting made into hamburger when he admits he dosen't know, and that's the first step. The next ones are his. While an old man beats up Grog, the rest of our heroes head to the slayers take, which Vax says is a bad idea and refuses to explain why... until they get in there and we find out the take is pissed at the twins for stealing a bounty on a hydra from them, a nice nod to the origianl stream where VM first met the take fighting a hydra they had marked and had to join them to avoid arrest. It was a whole thing I have not scene. Point is our heroes are mostly marked for death by voice acting legend Will Fredle!
Tumblr media
Yeah it's been a while since I heard him though he DID play Star Lord in that guardians of the galaxy show I forgot existed, so he hasn't stopped working, he just hasn't had any high profile gigs for a while is all. If you don't know him
Tumblr media
And second I don't qutie mean that but it's still weird as he's played Terry Mcgunnies,Doyle Saturday Jamie Reyes, and of course the one the only best boy of all boys Ron Stoppable. He's been in this buisness a while with many more under his belt. He's not here because of that though but because Will Fredle actually guest starred on Critical Roll along with Mary Elziabeth MCgleenn as Zahara, a warlock and fellow take member whose just as eager for said revenge. It was part of that arc I mentioned, which was heavy on guest stars, including Felica Day who I hope gets more of a roll down the line, either as her character or just as someone period. To explain to people like me who only watch the cartoon, Critical Roll will occasionally have someone else sit at the table, bring in a character for the session that sort of thing. It's the tabletop equilvent of when someone TECHNICALLY joins your party in an rpg but you either have no control over them or their only there for the dungeon. Zahara and Kash were some of the most popular, so it's no suprise they made it over eventually, simply compressing thing: most of the party meets the take here instead of in the past, and one part of Kash's story, his flirting with Keleyth, was moved here. I won't say what I know backstory wise, as it may be revealed here later.
Anyways the take is overulled by their patron, who has them drop the party into her sarlac pit. It's there we get my faviorite sequnece of the episode: the fact it dosent have boy meets world's brother sucks but instead we get Allana Ubach, aka Manny Rivera herself, as Osysa, an ancient sphinx who quickly sets out to test our heroes.. and how is simple: break their spirit and see if they get back up: being a sphinx she apparently knows everything and thus needles our casts weakensses: Pike is afraid she wont' be good enoguh to save her friend smuch less the world, Percy is still wondering if he can ever earn back his friends trust after what he's done or evne forgive himself, the twins have seperation anxiety with Vax being afraid of loosing his sister and Vex having tried desperatley to please a father who will never love her back, Kelyeth faces the fact she's been avoiding doing her armante, and Scalan gets the biggest put down of all "No one cares about you and i'm no exception". She offers to let the heroes leave.. but PIke is steadfast standing up and refusing to leave , even willing to die to prove a point, and everyone is behind her.. and that, in classic fantasy fashion.. was the point. It was a test of resolve. To see if they were worthy and if they can do what's necessary: to fight even in impossible odds and be ready to sacrifice anything to succeed.
Their tools.. are something awesome that was ironically, thank you book for this knowledge, cooked up to solve a common dnd problem, and one that plauges video game rpgs too: you often get cool weapons, rely on them, come to value them as part of you.. ,but due to it's nature as a game you have to give them up eventually. Matt's solution? The Vestiges of Divergence. While there's KIND OF an explination in the show, here's the short version of teh long version: Long ago there war between the good gods and the evil betrayer gods. To help save humanity the gods gave their various patrons the vestiges, weapons embued with the power of gods from weapons to armor to cloaks. The weapons were either lost or hidden after the war, and thus wait for new bearers. When the bearer undergoes an emotoinal turning point, the vestige becomes awawkened and thus stronger. So in short a characters development... makes the item stronger and thus keeps it around, and nicely translates to tv storytelling. They can give our heroes the leg up to fight the dragons
The first is in a tomb in the lake to the west, The Deathwalkers Ward. We'll learn more about it in a moment but for now our heroes have ana ctual plan: get the vestiges, kill the dragons and then profit.. that's.. literally how vex puts it suprising no one. Our heroes decide to spend a night getting good and hammered first, before preapring to set out Edit: Crap on a crap cracker! While i'm not going to kick myself too much fo rmissing something most of the time I nearly didn't mention victor. He was a recurring charcter in the stream apparently tha tnaturlaly matt not only reprised here but they found a way to include.. and he's every bit delightful as he was built up to be, casually exploding his place by the end of his apperance, talking jolliy,.. and still being nicely integrated as a random shop keep is easy to put in a stream but here not only does Percy getting some black powder before he heads off make sense.. but it reveals Ana ripley is not only around.. but got some herself. percy decides to keep this to himself but there's no way this can possibly end well.
Tumblr media
The Sunken Tomb
Or as I call it
Tumblr media
Yeah even knowing what's ahead.. didn't help. This episode hurt. And for the first third or so it's just okay: Pike is a bit wory about the pitch black sword made of pure evil wielded by a spooky vampire Grog is using, Scalan indulges in his foot fetish, Percy's only suggestion when some creatures from the black lagoon attack him is "KELEYTH TURN INTO A BIRD OR SOMETHIGN" i'ts normal. The only diffrences are Zahra and Kashaw, who are commencing with operation "steal the vestige out from under them" an d"Get into kiki's tunic dress whatever" respectively.
This does lead to one of the shows funniest moments so far and one I had to replay at least twice before I could move on: the tomb as it turns out is the temple of Purvan... which for some reason Matt insisted be prounounced pur-von.
Tumblr media
Yeah as you can probably imagine the original livestream, which I luckily found a clip of this moment on youtube so I didn't have to dig for it, went off the rails for a second after this as the entire cast laughed at it for some time while Matt vainly tried to both restore order and defend the purv. So i'm delighted the gang's knee jerk and entirley justified reaction of chorttling like middle schoolers was kept, with the entreity of vox machina bursting out into laughter, and with the best two jokes given to their actors respective characters with Scalan wondering if his last name is Pedo Bear and Vax admitting we all need to get our perv on sometime. IT's somehow made better with Kash's deadpan "You guys are the worst", which is clearly echoing what Matt was thinking in the moment. The rest is a prettty standard dungeon crawl, though spiced up with the sense of impending dread: the mysterious figure of the raven queen keeps stalking vax, his paranoia at his sisters death is hightned.. and then they get seperated. It's also telling he's hung up on this as he only reacts maybe once to Kiki moving on to someone else... whic is refreshing as you can only see so much scooby doo before your sick of "Daphne gets mad at fred despite them not being together" #87, so good on him. Worry about his sister now. Admitely i'm not on team Vax because it's the clear endgame. Being the clear endgame.. does not necessarily make a ship good. For instance i'm mostly supporting the main ship of miraculous ladybug out of fatigue at this point. Just because the writers want a relatoinship dosen't mean the audience is rooting for it. But the two have genuine chemstiry, to the point it just happened organically in the game, while Kash.. just seems to be hitting on her because he thinks she's pretty. Which.. she is. I mean this entire team is a smokeshow. Even grog who I kinda put to the side last season has gone up a notch thanks to him getting a breard. Also him getting his beard was comedy gold, from him putting on the belt of dwarvenkind to Kash sarcastically brushing it off.. only for Grog to get in his face. As for why this is a big thing apparently Goliath's, Grog's race, are naturally smooth let's say.
At any rate, we get two parties, and a nicely tense fight scene with the fish man, as well as Vex's exasperation that one of them is a wizard. It's a fun fight, and we even get trinket eating some guys then letting pike ride on his back.
Tumblr media
And more disturbing and plot relevant.. grog gets a bit too into murdering which starts funny (it's because his beard was half shaved off, a nod to a prank from the stream i'd heard of), and .. then gets creepy as he gets very slasher villian into his bloodshed to Pike's horror. No time to talk though as the slayers booked it and went down a hallway to possible doom.. as it turns out when Vox machina enters and finds out the secret entrance they found is not the one they need. Instead Vax goes investigating instead of vex.. which proves to be a fatal mistake. Not for him, he's fine and finds out where their informant is. But Percy flirtly egging Vex on with "your brother wouldn't like it", which is also what he calls oral, finds them the grave and the vestige. Which normally would be great: magic item found, flirting between my faviorite pairing on the show, a good time for all.. but well... this show likes to hurt us and matthew mercer like sto hurt his players so .... Vex .. is well....
Tumblr media
An arcane bolt hits her, and she disturbingly just.. htis the floor.. her eyes dead. Probably not the best time to see this given my cat died two weeks ago and had the same look. It's well done and makes you think for a second it might not be undone. All the party can do is scramble to her while Scalan, despite being often at odds with both twins, screams for him to get up here. And just to twist the knife further, the episode spent a good chunk of it's runtime somehow making us feel worse as we get some backstory for vax and vex. It's one of the nice thigns about the medium: instead of just saying the backstory, which is a necity in tabletop and still can be done hauntingly well as, having seen the first episode of the whitestone arc, Talisen Jaffe did a soulcrushing performance of percy telling everyone his. But here you can flesh it out an dhave the players actually act out their tragic pasts.
So going back a bit, we focus on the day Vax and Vex left their abuse father. IT's been mentioned their mom was killed by a dragon but what hasn't come up till now.. is their father. See their dad Sygorn is..
Tumblr media
He's a racist asshole who basiclaly abucted the twins from their mom.. then proceded to emotoinally abuse them, being cold distant and feleing like they were an embarssment for being half human. He is a giant back of fuck you good sir and his first scene has him getting overly pissed at Vex for trying on and accidently breaking a diadim, then calling them out on their "Muddled" blood. Vax has enough and says their getting the fuck out of there and while Vex hestiaties, badly wanting her dad's love... the fact her dad dose n't put up a fight crushes her enough to go along with it. The two end up fighting with Vex, feeling vax needs her too much, leaves. She succesfully hunts and is fine on her own... but finds a sobbing Vax. As it turns out his clingyness wasn't because he felt she needed him.. but because he felt worthless and needed HER. They reconclile and promise to mever be apart. It puts a LOT of Vex's clingy behavior in season one in a more sympathetic light: she's utterly horrible to Kiki, true, and it's still not okay.. but given her brother is easily hurt, she just wants to, if entirely misguidedly protect him. It also explains why despite Vex being openly flurtatious with percy so far Vax hasn't returned the same: While Vex likely worries her brother can't handle himself (he can), Vax knows she can and only got scared and overportective when he kept getting portents of death.. and given said portent caused her death, I can't blame him. TH eending is just.. liam doing som heartbreaking sobbing. And true to form that's where we leave the week.... Mercer you bastard. I'll hopefully be here next week but if not catch me on twitter @lanternmogo and thanks for reading.

An Incomplete List Of Disjointed Subjects I've Researched While Writing About East Asian Omegaverse Comics To Give The Only Correct Takes On The Planet
Title is sarcasm. You should be used to that.
Historical relationships between Korea, Japan, and China
History of "fandom" as it pertains to BL and slash (Star Trek, but also the Epic of Gilgamesh and cave people)
History of BL and slash (separately)
EA BL in the West (not to be confused with EA BL in EA
Chinese censorship (which is not like what Americans think it is)
Japanese sex work history and law
Existential philosophy (mmmm PHL-200 me)
Agency & consent via The West and EA differences
H.P. Lovecraft
Transmedia storytelling (cross-platform storytelling)
Western European Colonialism
Western Cultural Imperialism
Digital comic publishing in EA
Traditional comic publishing in EA
Mental illness in Korea
Korean horror
Digital platformization of manhwa and manhua
Webtoons and labor and nationalization of webtoons
Queer Chineseness (not to be confused with Chinese queerness)
Commodifying queerness specifically as it pertains to Korea
Furries
Kemono (furries, but Japanese)
Kink & fetishism
Consumerism and commodification of identity
Work culture
The show Supernatural
Snack culture (not food)
A/B/O history (no shit)
A/B/O-adjacent history (no shit, squared)
How to make doujins (because I appropriated them)
How to scanlate (because I appropriated that while making my fake doujins)
It feels like I've gone from having the worst takes on Omegaverse to having such nuanced takes that I look like a fucking know-it-all but I wanted to learn everything about everything and keep asking myself "why" on the most random shit and trying to figure out these "whys" and it just drives me up a wall. I can't stop asking "why" and I keep wanting to know more and it's never enough. I don't know if there's a question someone could ask about Omegaverse that I wouldn't have an answer for.
I still don't like Omegaverse. But I am 2 years into a hyper-fixation on this genre I do not like and now I am among the most knowledgable people on earth. And I made a curiouscat so you can rant, rave, complain, or talk about your day. It'll keep me busy while working and remind me people exist. AMAA about literally anything listed here and I'll accidentally ramble about it.

Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon? Episode 64-65: TwoMulti-part finale (part 6: Sonic Super Special #15)
Welcome back to my look at the ArchieSonic comic series, and how it shared a lot of the same story tropes as a typical ‘80s or ‘90s syndicated cartoon! Today I’m continuing my look at the various finales that were seen throughout the life of the ArchieSonic series, and that means that it’s time to look at one of the worst issues of Sonic that Archie ever published: Sonic Super Special #15, better known as Naugus Games.
Beginning in 1995, Archie started releasing 48 page specials several times a year as additional content to compliment the regular ongoing series. These specials sometimes told an original story, such as Super Sonic vs Hyper Knuckles or… sigh… Sonic Live. Sometimes they continued a story that had been started in the main Sonic series, such as In Your Face! or Mecha Madness. And sometimes they featured adaptations based on the latest Sonic game to come out, such as Knuckles’ Chaotix or Sonic Triple Trouble. These were all branded as an issue #1 (Sonic & Knuckles #1, Sonic Blast #1, etc), which could make it a little hard to figure out what order they were supposed to be read in. Perhaps this is why the specials were replaced with the super special series in 1997, which were essentially the exact same thing only now they were consistently numbered. Battle Royal was super special #1, Brave New World was super special #2, and so on. Only one of the super specials was used for a game adaptation (Sonic Adventure in super special #13), which isn’t that surprising when you consider how few Sonic games were coming out at the time. Let’s face it, a comic adaptation of Sonic R probably wouldn’t have been very good. There was quite a bit of variety to the super specials. A couple of them were used to reprint older stories, such as Sonic Firsts and the director’s cut of Sonic #50. Two of them were the Sonic Kids specials, telling stories of the Freedom Fighters (and also Knuckles) back when they were much younger. And a couple of the super specials were also used for crossovers. These ranged from okay to mediocre in the case of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Sonic Underground crossovers, to godawful in the case of the Image Comics crossover. But the super special series came to a screeching halt in November 2000 with the final issue, Naugus Games.
Tumblr media
The first story in this issue, Naugus Games, is one that I’ve ranted about before in the “trapped in the snow” episode. But let’s take another look at it anyway. If nothing else, it’ll be my last chance to rant about Ken Penders’ writing. The story opened in the Southern Tundra, with Sonic returning to the site of his previous battle with Ixis Naugus to pay his respects to Eddy.
Tumblr media
There was a one page recap with Sonic remembering what had previously happened here - and honestly, that’s fair enough considering how that had happened in the main series rather than the super specials, and two years prior.
Tumblr media
And so back in the present Sonic had come down to the end of the world to lay a rose and give his thanks. And this is where everything went wrong - not just for Sonic, but for those of us reading the story too.
Tumblr media
Because after the ground collapsed underneath Sonic and he fell into a cave, we were presented with three pages of Sonic’s eyes staring out of a pitch black nothingness while he talked to himself. Three pages of this:
Tumblr media
Eventually after stumbling around in the dark for three. Freaking. Pages, Sonic found a light at the end of the tunnel that turned out to be some of Nate’s leftover power rings.
Tumblr media
Naturally Sonic gravitated right toward them and boobied right into a booby trap left behind by Naugus, freeing him from his imprisonment in the Zone of Silence. And thus an epic battle began.
Tumblr media
Er, sort of. Let’s be honest, this art is not great. The issue credits the pencils and inks to “Many Hands,” which appears to be a pseudonym for someone (possibly multiple someones) who preferred to remain anonymous. They only contributed to one other story, which was a poor quality adaptation of a SatAM episode in Sonic #113.
Tumblr media
Well, whatever. Poor quality art is better than no art, right? Well bad news - no art is exactly what we got next when Penders pulled the same trick he had earlier with Sonic being trapped in the darkness, only this time with snow instead.
Tumblr media
This time it was even worse - this BS lasted for six pages until Sonic finally remembered he’d put a ring in his pocket and used it to wish Naugus right back into the Zone of Silence.
Tumblr media
My God, how did this art even get approved?! Whatever. The day was won, and Sonic once again paid his respects to Eddy as he headed back to his plane. And thank god, because it meant we didn't have to look at any more of this horrible Many Hands art.
The second story, written by Michael Gallagher, was called Sonic Spin City and was inspired by Frank Miller’s Sin City novels. What a bizarre choice for a Sonic the Hedgehog comic! Back in 2000 the movie hadn’t come out yet and I had absolutely no idea what was going on here. Being a Michael J. Fox fan, I was just disappointed that it wasn’t a story where Antoine was the Mayor of Knothole and Sonic was his deputy mayor, desperately trying to cover his incompetence with political (Sonic) spin.
Tumblr media
Anyone else remember this show? I have some pretty fond memories of it. This was sadly when Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He left the show after the fourth season and was replaced by Charlie Sheen, whose name wasn’t immediately met with, “Ewww!” reactions back in those days. 😛
Anyway, let’s talk about this story.
Tumblr media
It’s certainly atmospheric, I’ll say that for it. I’ve also just noticed that Sonic’s eyes don’t appear to have green irises, which perhaps suggests that this story took place prior to his transformation in Sonic #71. Then again, considering that his arms are coloured dark in this story too, it’s probably just an artistic choice. But I’m practically inviting flame wars in the comments regarding the colour of Sonic’s arms and eyes by focusing on this, so let’s just get back to the story.
Tumblr media
After finding a matchbook for a club named Rusty’s on one of the Swatbots, Sonic went to investigate.
Tumblr media
A chilli dog float, huh? So for those of you familiar with the Sonic brand of chilli dog-flavoured Gfuel and horrified by it, I imagine it’s something like that but also carbonated and with ice cream. Or maybe it's more like this drink that was available during San Diego Comic-Con in 2021?
Tumblr media
While Sonic was waiting for his drink and/or to be ambushed by the other patrons,  a showgirl appeared on stage to entertain everyone. No, you did not read that wrong.
Tumblr media
This just seems… wildly out of place for a Sonic the Hedgehog comic. I thought this was a Christian Minecraft server! But surprise!
Tumblr media
The showgirl had been Bunnie in disguise the whole time, and she and Sonic started wrecking all the robots in the place.
Tumblr media
One of the combots tried to take them out with a self-destruct sequence, but Sonic and Bunnie were able to escape just in time and headed off into the sunrise. Well, I assume it's sunrise anyway, just because the sky is lighter.
Let’s not beat around the bush - this issue was absolutely ridiculous. The art for the cover story was pretty awful (although the cover itself was decent), and that’s when there even was art. As for the story… I think this may be the laziest story that Ken Penders ever wrote for Sonic. 10 pages where there was nothing visible but a black or white void is absolutely inexcusable. Even I, a teenage Sonic fan who was easily pleased at the time this was published, put this down after reading it and thought, “...I actually paid money for this.” And while the Sin City-inspired story wasn’t exactly bad, it still felt incredibly out of place in a comic book about a blue hedgehog who runs fast and fights a mad scientist and his army of robots.
While this is probably the worst of all the super specials, it wasn’t exactly lacking in competition for that title. Just look at the three issues that came prior to this one.
Tumblr media
Super special #12 was a reprint of a mediocre body swap story between Sonic and Knuckles that you had to turn sideways to read because it had been printed in a newspaper. The B story about Sonic having to fight interdimensional kaiju versions of his friends wasn’t bad though.
Tumblr media
Super special #13 was the Sonic Adventure adaptation, which would have been a lot better had it been drawn by someone other than Ron Lim.
Tumblr media
I don’t want to be mean to the guy, but his Sonic art is… not great.
Tumblr media
And super special #14 featured a 12 page story where Sonic was framed for petty crimes in another zone and had to team up with Sally McBeal McAcorn to clear his name. ...no, I'm not joking.
Tumblr media
Despite that being the first story in the book it was pretty obviously the B-story of the issue. The main focus was on a 26 page Knuckles story where Ken Penders introduced yet another completely unnecessary member of the Brotherhood and the Dark Legion trapped everyone on the entire island except for Knuckles in another zone.
Tumblr media
This then led into Knuckles’ next series of adventures in the main Sonic issues, as his own series had been cancelled and he was now being forced to share page space with his bestest blue buddy. And then after all of that came Naugus Games. So it’s not at all surprising that the super specials ended when they did. I don’t know whether it was SEGA that pulled the plug, or whether Archie realised that they needed to cut it before things got any worse, but either way I think it was for the best.
I know I’ve mentioned this before in previous episodes, but I think Naugus Games is solid evidence of a larger problem that the writers were having in the main book around this time, in which they seemed to be running out of ideas for what they wanted to do with the characters. For example, the cover stories for the next two issues that came out following the final super special were an Elseworlds story about the “Freedom Fighters of the Galaxy.”
Tumblr media
Strangely enough, this wasn't even the first time a Robotnik-Galactus hybrid had been seen in the comics. And seriously, how many people reading Sonic the Hedgehog in 2001 would have even known about the Guardians of the Galaxy? I certainly had no idea what this was all about. This era of the comic also featured a lot of interactive non-story stuff for readers to fill in, such as crosswords, connect the dots, and Knuckles’ (upside down) family tree, and... whatever the hell this is.
Tumblr media
Not very, Tails.
Having to share space with Knuckles was having an impact on the Sonic stories too, because heaven forbid Ken Penders didn’t give us our monthly dose of Green Knuckles and Lara-Su.
Tumblr media
There were some decent Sonic stories during this time, but a lot of them, even those that had interesting concepts and could have potentially been good to read, felt like they had been rushed and cut down to the bare minimum to fit in the reduced number of pages. Quite frankly, at times it felt like the writers and editors were struggling to scrape enough material together to fill their page allotment and were just throwing any old thing at the wall to see if anything would stick. Combine this with a lot of unsatisfactory art (Ron Lim did a lot of those issues), and you can start to see why Sonic #101 - 125 is one of my two least favourite eras of ArchieSonic. In my opinion things picked up a bit after #125, as the status quo was shaken up by the Tossed in Space arc and Sonic’s return to Knothole a year later. But after Karl Bollers left the series with Sonic #141 and Ken Penders was mostly running the show by himself, it was a rough ride until he also left and Ian Flynn became the head writer in Sonic #160.
Anyway, enough lamenting about horrible art and terrible writers. Next time I’m going to be looking at the finale of one of the ArchieSonic spin offs that people actually were sorry to see end. Join me then, when I take a look at Sonic X #40!

ROGUE TROOPER is coming to screens written and directed by Duncan Jones

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. For years, Jones has been developing an adaptation of the comic Rogue Trooper, which is to be an animated feature. The production has been rolling along, and Variety has revealed the cast of actors that Jones has been able to compile for the film. Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell, and Jack Lowden are reportedly said to be the main cast in the lead roles for the science-fiction animated film. Barnard, whose credits include The Goldfinch and Dunkirk, is set to star as the eponymous Rogue Trooper. Joining him in the movie is Atwell, who is known for her roles in the Captain America movies and various Marvel Studios appearances, as well as the recent Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. Rounding out the main cast is Lowden, who was previously seen in Slow Horses and Dunkirk. Jones has additionally assembled Daryl McCormack (Bad Sisters, Good Luck to You Leo Grande), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9, Saltburn), Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, Flight of the Conchords), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Alice Lowe (Black Mirror), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Hugo) and Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings). The movie, which is based on a 2000 AD’s comic book series by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, will be animated and made with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.

Rogue Trooper is one of the greatest characters to come out of 2000 AD, which also publishes characters such as Judge Dredd, Nemesis the Warlock, and Strontium Dog. Created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons, Rogue Trooper is a genetically engineered soldier bred to fight on Nu-Earth, a hellish planet consumed by an endless war between the Norts and the Southers. The sole survivor of a massacre that claimed his fellow GIs, Rogue sets out on a mission to find the traitor who betrayed them – the personalities of three dead comrades plugged into his helmet, backpack, and rifle. Jones is one of a generation of leading British film directors who have been inspired by the satirical, anti-establishment, and hyper-violent comic strips in 2000 AD. First published in 1977, 2000 AD has been at the cutting edge of British culture for four decades and continues to publish ground-breaking science fiction, fantasy, and horror comics.   2000 AD is the legendary weekly British anthology comic – the home of Judge Dredd and a galaxy of original sci-fi, fantasy, and horror action stars. Producing innovative and provocative comics for 40 years, it has brought the industry some of its biggest talents, from Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Mark Millar, to Jock, Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbons, and many more. Published in print and digital every Wednesday, 2000 AD is the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic and remains at the industry’s cutting edge.

Ah, I think after seeing a good comic but with a cutesy artstyle, I understand the issue with trans messaging to non-dysfunctional republicans that are mostly in name.
Trans messaging is too cute, or too descriptively gross. It's either messaging for the general public, or messaging for...themselves.
I read alot of posts that use all sorts of verbiage, and against my will I have learned them, which is fine, but understand I have no interest reading anything that has descriptor after descriptor after descriptor.
Ya'll're just people man. I'm glad ya celebrate your culture and fully say "fuck you I am Myself". But recognize life, humanity, isn't predisposed to caring about another person in a country that actively sets you up to be against one another.
In terms of the internet personality, what is shown, understand I am just as cringed and annoyed on a trans page as a republicans, just not as depressed and pissed off. Intention will do that, when someone is being themself and someone is being a nazi.
At the end of the day, I just feel ya'll are chill, awesome, very understanding, thoughtful, empathetic, smart, all the positives.
You're just...not cool. Not "cool" as in good, but appealing to anyone but yourselves. Ya'll trip over yourselves to echobox amongst yourselves in excitement finally finding someone likeminded just to circlejerk.
Straight dudes by and large are turned off by pink due to historic cultural bullshit reasons. The fact ya'll have a group that's banner is a rainbow and ya'll chose...Pink...and Baby Blue... Like, I get it, but your average bumbling fool is easily manipulated into giving money away if you jingle jangle some keys in their face. They want something edgey, cool, something they can actually feel cool to say they're apart of, not just proud.
I don't feel cool being an ally, trans, asexual to pansexual. I feel proud to be on the right side of history. It's just that you fuckers keep shoving teddy bears and girly aesthetics into the frame blocking my epic Bionicles figure with fire behind it. Ya can't even see it because the pink is so overpowering it's blooming my god damned screen.
Trans messaging is VERY dominated by femininity. That's...fine, but the fact it's Pre-occupied with it ans themself shows it's still developing, and the best change is it's messaging to not be hyper-feminist.
Instead of dropping high-detail verbiage to find just the right place you fit into some series of labels nobody heard of til recently especially you, how about, you know, you remember the average slob doesn't remember what year 9/11 took place, much less what caused it. That's just in ya'lls bible on here like literally anything trans or feminist.
It's an echobox that's very, very Gay, and Girly. Should people be fascist bigots because of it? No, but you don't make saying you're an ally appealing when it Severely Implies you too are, gay, trans, or queer in some manner.
No """""normal""""" person has the time to learn all your fancy new words. They can hardly figure out Pronouns are just...pro...nouns.... No """""normal"""" person is interested in being lumped with an """other""" that's Chosen Inherent Existence is so god damn gay and girly it questions their masculinity just by being apart of it.
It's stupid as shit obviously. But if you're not willing to understand why your messaging fails for them, don't question why they're confused thay their message fails back.
You're both trying to be on a pedestal of importance claiming equality, but the truth everyone knows is Massive Social Change needs to happen for either side, normal/LGBT vs Nazis/Republicans, to prosper.
Republican messaging is entirely masculine. It's why they have any support right now. Idiots are scared of the unknown, and you threw an advanced biology book at the slackjawed and expected them to know how to read before even getting them remotely grounded in what transgenderism is. They're piss scared of using the wrong pro-nouns and getting fired because A: They believe anything anyone tells them so long as it enables them to be shitty, and B: Ya'll mother fuckers were too precious about the whole god damned thing initially that nobody on their side is willing to take it seriously.
The people you were desperate to get to use your pro-nouns are the kind of people that Everything they cared about was shit on so they have absolutelt no ability to care deeply for something that isn't hustle culture. You were fighting a crowd of people who's entire perspective on having something passionate about themselves was never in their identity but their worth as a man, financially, socially, or physically.
The fact the transgender movement doesn't know shit about the struggles of men is why they're so god damn obnoxious to just about everyone and I mean this when I say it: Ya'll will lose support if you don't wise the fuck up, because everyone else will before you if you refuse and stay conservative in your ideology.
There's nothing more infuriating than hearing honestly pointless situations occur in your daily life that don't even begin to measure up to other's. Trying to pass, I get it, but man ya'll just go out of your way sometimes to confuse or enrage. How the hell is a normie idiot distracted by keys going to tell the difference between male, female, someone trying to pass, a drag queen, or just someone dressing non-comformly?
Sure you can use "they" but recognize you're asking society to train themselves for such a small minority they may only see/acknowledge once in their entire lives. And ya'll shit on men for accidents. Remember when Feminazi's made a rocket scientist cry and apologize on live TV for wearing a fucking shirt? Congrats on that win, why are they allowed in trans discussions again? When they're Vehemently anti-men or at best just pro-women? And their entire perspective is female based?
Seriously what a handicap to trans messaging letting feminazi's color discussions went. Thank fuck they moved on to being Terfs and most of ya'll wised up. Now we just gotta dissect their shitty 2013 asses out.
Really though, you can't just blanket blame trans people for not being PR people. It's not like trans people have secret meetings or whatever, that's the republican party with mega-corps.
But at some point man, when your goal is to dismantle gender identity but the literal only part anyone knows about ya'll is femboys and chix with dix, anti-masculinity, recognize that, maybe, just maybe, the feminist movement got far too involved shoving too many fingers into the culture and messaging, the anti-masculinity shit is only an extended piece of the old decrepit Feminazis that Very Much Existed and Very Much helped Trump get elected by starting a culture war in the most awful approach anyone has seen yet.
They're fine now, surprisingly, they kicked out their crazies, some of them not most, but the trans movement is genuinely too female populated for them to get a good entire message out.
Really ask yourself the last time men or masculinity actually felt involved in any trans discussions that wasn't Seering with Hate or underlined with disdain. The times of positivity hide behind the veneer of the general opinion by claiming "this is different" but not acknowledging that there's issues To masculinity via culture, that of which you could focus on.
Then scroll down tumblr and try to find literally any posts you can share with a normie friend or family member.
More than likely, you went to your mom, sister, or someone female. If anyone. Males are simply uninvolved in the trans movement, and FtMs are basically handicapped from the start not being essentially groomed into the lifestyle from birth. If you were hugged as a child and told you matter, well sorry, sorry for everyone involved but, you don't have that inherent loner hanging on the edge of your peer's judgements masculinity. Ya just got bravado, not experience.
Being a man is to be judged consistently for not being masculine. Being a man is to be abused and no one care. To be a man is to let yourself get angry and now that's all you ever are.
That happens to females too. But nobody is abandoning you. You're, in the general slob's eyes: "weak and need protected" also "sometimes crazy so give them the slide"
Men get thrown out. Just a fact. That. Is unfortunately true masculinity. Tools. To be broken, unloved, emotional stunted, but most of all, Utterly Terrified but Forced To Push On at gun point.
I am all for dysmantling that, but in order to do so, ya'll motherfuckers gotta start kicking some of the feminazi remains of 2013 out of your community.
And recognize that masculinity is to be taught that empathy and sympathy aren't 'weaknesses' but "exploitable points" that you are groomed into being exactly One Thing at All Times even at Funerals.
Is it all around like that? No, is it some or most? Yes. For every male kid, they are taught to Fuck Off, Shut the Fuck Up, Work, and Take the Blame.
And a FtM simply cannot reach that. They shouldn't either. But to claim male representation without the trauma, I appreciate it. But others will resent the fuck out of it. Like a little brother annoying his way into a dangerous activity, these broken pieces of shit will go out of their way to "initiate" you, and trust me when I say, it's not an initiation but planned murder. Murder of your character, your soul, personality and wit, or your actual physical body.
All that to say, you're a man. But honest to god, how dare you have it incredibly so easy that it was a choice to accept that's who you are. Good for you though truly, wouldn't wish it upon you. Just don't pretend from your judgement that your taught opinion is accurate to the groomed perspective.
The Entirety of the movement as is hinges on the destruction of masculinity in messaging. I'm all for it, but ya'll make it anti-male and too cute for any traumatised dude to listen to. It genuinely sounds whiney. If not, it sounds disingenuous, and not from a place of experience of a born man's own.
What men see from women is them being angry, and still having respect, not fear, not vitriol. They keep friends, they keep their job, and all they needed was an excuse. That don't happen for men. It can, but realistically speaking, the average person is going to shoot the dude without hesitation before any female or FtM regardless of Biological or Neurological knowledge.
Simply put, Men are made to deal with shit and die for nothing. We are told we have no value. And the general trans movement sure loves going out of it's way to shit on the Very Seldom Few things men are allowed to enjoy.
Absolutey, shoe on the other foot, this same conversation in reverse would happen.
The difference is Ya'll are self aware and willing where as men are broken down to apathetic acceptance. Show them you aren't just out for yourself and your girly friends, and start being cool, approachable.
Because their only friends are also, groomed, and traumatized. Their only support networks are echboxes of hustle culture.
Ignore the republicans, ignore the right wingery. Focus on the fact there's no masculine support network. Keep being gay and girly. Just acknowledge that shouldn't be the extent of the trans movement.
Kindness and nice thoughts will only go so far to a war veteran. And obviously men aren't all inherently that, but most are certainly hardened and traumatized with 0 healthcare from the government.
Point is stop making everything so fucking pink and girly and gay if you want anyone to believe you're not just a stupid fanbase making cutesy in-jokes for your online echobox of larpers. You're not. Stop fucking presenting yourselves as weak and pathetic and people will give a shit.

Journal 102: my goodbye epic the musical
youtube
am done with golem and rushushas. Things are back to normal. And I am very traumatized. Were good!
"Jake then realized once again via his EDNOS and disordered eating he could not eat his plate. Today's lunch was fruitcake and chicken macaroni and jake cousnt take a bite. They also charmed it at the house and jake coudnt bear it. The smell made him sick. Delicoat can also lead to eating disorders. Not many people know that's just a thing with antiphycotics in general more sever depending on the kind. Depression meds = weight problems under or mostly over. Mood staplers = body image problems, numb, hyper blank sex drive or empathy and dreams, and antiphyoctics extra psychosis or depression or disordered eating or vomiting. Jake often had been on everything and he joked "this is what it cures, this is what it causes" it was an old joke JD haileys father told him as a little girl when he first vented. Ad jake prepared the first reality shift in a long time. He forgot how much of his adventures really just seemed in his head.
Jake was in Jesus guise told them his name was jake caloway. They tird him up in a bug like cavern and quickly disposed of him. They pushed him down. And tied him up. And after he questioned as a philosophy why not to leave the cavern showing his old philosophers cave. And so back in the day philosophy was the entire world and the expirence of amgick secrets. Why this is shown to some. Regardless it was jakes memory. And so Jake was pushed down on his back and they tied him up and beamed the sunlight upon him killing him. They noted he prayed for his other self and apologized for tricking him. As he became a human sacrifice. And so noted Jake heard "and this is why your afraid of wings here" by small petite voice of a woman. And jake remembered."
I've been learning the easy Of faries as Acrians is sharing all the rules of the courts previously forbiden as new ages are ushered in. And I've gotten back into reality shifting. Diongoespews video on the spastic method and Adam snowflakes book dreamers book 3 detail guides on it and I've done it once more. I've come to the rationale and reason that reality shifting is am entire setting. I've become an animyst and am learning the secrets of the stars. What species are. How they came here. What is is to do shape magick and dream. That hunters are real!!! What they do as I time travel as adamith froster and become friends with Crowley. Become Jaden angel and friends with Shaun whinchester. As I learn that every soul has a character and every character belongs to a force or player. That an actor or writer taps into to dream of a presentation thst becomes real for someone else. I have learned that everything was once divine. Magick. Door knobs. Wood. And these ideas and concepts seem laughable. But I've been time traveling making my mark and impact as I have now learned is all connected! And my skisoprehnic episodes were real conjugations and gates.
And that the world is built on layers. And societies to keep them safe. You may not like the illuminati or aliens or scientology. The mormo. Church might have fucked up rituals and the moonies to sexual in nature. But I was a family member once. I time traveled to do it all. Marylim Manson an alien in a jersey a Brad who wore in war as a general and in school as a fairy of two Petronas split down the middle.
My face was burned recently. And I'm raising a dragon as my own. I've learned regarding the multiverse there are people and planets and things. Every website was once a spirit. Every fashion belongs to a race. A race of hidden magick on earth. Thst now crosses the stars as a gift to then. So who cares what asgardians are
In some realities they never met a boat. I'm not in those realities either. You know thorin loves those movies comics mixed bag but he likes those movies. Cus he gets to dream he's Thor.
Whatever I have taught you insane or not has been to help the multiverse. To shift those proper realities. To save all of existance and when I'm done cus your reading in the moment for you to explore it. And expirerence it. The multiverse has aliens and elves and black white realities with advanced gaming consoles but for some reason improper computers.
I've married the gods of technology thievery and television. Techno loki and hermes and Teli. Old of tools and plays and advancement with Bill cipher as my guide in my wheelchair as olive. I really am in a wheelchair people don't seem to beleive I really fell from three stories like master. For some reason all his students call him that.
I learned that faking a persona can reincarnate into a new soul even if it's a lamp or a character or a dream. And that that is what a shape is. That is what becomes an animal. And that is what builds Egypt. And that's all because I learned reality shifting I learned pop culture magick I took chances and things seemed RIDICULIUS one of my characters. And I got rewarded for it. This is magick. Whether you like it or not
The silly things are magick. Cus this is how traditions come to play. And if your nodding your head shaking reading Farley curely into every word I say for their are to am y nays in the word of Smith. Get it naysayers and tool guys? Understand to fully explore the multiverse you read this diary.
And this diary teaches you kabahlla rushsusa, time travel, multiverse, and shape magick and if you don't like thst. That the fantasy novel ypu read and enjoy could be real? Your not ready foe magick. Your not ready for power. Which is not what magick should ever be about. Taught to me early by the master.  Not from doctor who my sage acrians locket who I see myself in person towards. I'm sorry if your nitpicky reality and snobby ways blind you to the old eras but as someone who's lived them this is how we did it.
We bring stories to life. Pop culture magick. We treat new forms of magick to be ours and irished up or oldened or scotified so it's now vikings like Jesus joining thr norse gods or adapting the Jewish as our own. I've been traveling sometimes in a boat. Sometimes in a warp. And you may not know it yet but we could have been great friends before you secured at me.
Theirs no such thing as a stupid idea. Meet you new instructor olive brimstone ambaseder of earth Rushusha. And if you don't like the fantasy how dare you demand it or call yourself a witch? Time to open your eyes and stop being bigoted. Your never going to recognize me and no emo beanie can change that. It covers a tatoo dipshit. I know who I'm attesting. My stupid fingerless gloves.
Anyways! As someone who changes face but yet does not know how. I still have much to learn. But learning taboo and reacting it and not fading from it. Learning from the goetia and noting that just cus my mentor has experience doesn't meant I do is what got me far. Not binding someone taught me the stars. We don't teach people to whip the cooks who cook them food. If that food is knowledge and you use a circle or chant for it, that distress is deserved how dare you call yourself his student. Your trying to be his slave master and you dare demand a reward?????? Anyways. Enough @ing.
I got interdimemsional travel. I have to time travel and I finally keep doing. I'm doing to ritual to manifest my dream body of my right gender and I'm exploring through spirit work my true self and person. What the gods are. Where they live. Joining there families and basterdizing and crafting for my friends as Kalin high. For my friends at Jethro or Bridgeton and Malock academy. I've learned I'm an imoetal teenager and with xenith and dragon forms in place I've learned I'm a kins. You don't know what that means but I know what a glomp is. And if your laughing the special list of kanaui mocks you back. Kinzo mocks you back. You vest mocks you back.
Objects having souls is animism and I really hate that tumblr blog thisnisnt you don't recognize me and I can't ebelive we were ever friends I'm so glad your starting to forget I won't be there to help you thus time i time I refuse stop praying to me how you treated me blind matters.
- an bitter Olive Brismtone. A magickal creature angry at the world. Dot dot dot fuck you.

Since I know I can be a bit of a snarky bitch when it comes to retellings, and I know that that can scare people away, I feel like it’s important to talk about adaptations that have been done right.
I’ve already talked about my love of the Spectacular Gargoyles RPG, but another golden example, and one that literally almost every Celticist I know loves, is the Cartoon Saloon Irish Folklore Trilogy, which is impressive, when you think about it, because even though it often does take on the history of Ireland, there’s relatively few medieval literary figures who show up. Aisling is mentioned, in supplementary material, to be the daughter of Lugh and Ériu (yes, I did look at the prequel comic to hyper-analyze her backstory, because what ELSE is a bored Celticist going to do), but you literally would not get that if you didn’t know where to look, and it doesn’t really add anything to her characterization. Crom Cruach is a real medieval literary figure, POSSIBLY a real pre-Christian figure (I’ve gotten into some mildly heated debates with colleagues on that one, but the possibility is out there), but we know next to nothing about him, and there’s nothing to suggest that, of all things, he’s that kind of...snakey figure, and, even though he’s the most frightening creature, he takes up relatively little screentime, the main tension resting on the Vikings. The werewolves of Ossory, which form the backbone of Wolfwalkers, are a genuine medieval tradition, but the way that the shapeshifting mechanism is implemented is totally new to the film. Manannán shows up in Song of the Sea, as does Macha, but they have very little to do with their medieval counterparts. Hell, Macha’s an OWL instead of the usual raven, AND Manannán’s mother, on top of that. One of the three Sídhe who welcome Saoirse is named Lugh, clearly a reference to...my beloved bitch, but, deliberately, he’s small and mainly used for comic relief, specifically to show how far the Sídhe have fallen. And the depiction of selkies is noticeably softened and expanded from the folklore (and selkies don’t show up at all in the medieval myths.)
Why do we love it, then? Why do I still sob like a baby when the Sídhe return to the Otherworld, or when I see the wolf family traveling along a road in hope of a new home?
...because there’s so much LOVE in them. There was care put into every detail, every frame, and the characters are well developed and strong on their own. They never set out to tell an Epic Story About Ireland™, instead, we see Ireland in three different time periods through the lens of three young protagonists, kids who are flawed and frustrated and aren’t prepared for the world they’re living in, and we see Ireland evolving in each film, see how the magic is gradually sucked from it by years of colonialism.
Every single time I see Song of the Sea, at the part where the Sídhe leave, I cry because, to me, what I’m seeing is the closing of over a thousand years of tradition, the same tradition that I decided, seven years ago, that I was going to devote my life to. I see the Dagda, Lugh, the Morrigan, Mannanán, Ériu, Bres, along with the figures from the other films like Aisling...all gone, BUT I’m only seeing that in the first place because the creators put so much care and attention into it, even as they strayed from the letter of the medieval material. We love it because it’s one of the only times in any of our lifetimes, even among the oldest of us, that we’ve EVER seen our field lovingly put onto the screen, where we can point at it and say “Yeah, this is what we do.”
That’s how you adapt the myths.
